sporadic crashes in multi-thread programs when several long deallocator

Note that the trashcan functions are part of the stable ABI, therefore
they have to be kept around for binary compatibility of extensions.
sporadic crashes in multi-thread programs when several long deallocator

Because of this change, a couple extension modules compiled for 3.2.4

fromlist of __import__ propagate.
The problem previously was that if something listed in fromlist didn't
exist then that's okay. The fix for that was too broad in terms of
catching ImportError.
The trick with the solution to this issue is that the proper
refactoring of import thanks to importlib doesn't allow for a way to
distinguish (portably) between an ImportError because finders couldn't
find a loader, or a loader raised the exception. In Python 3.4 the
hope is to introduce a new exception (e.g. ModuleNotFound) to make it
clean to differentiate why ImportError was raised.
When the fromlist argument is specified for __import__() and the
attribute doesn't already exist, an import is attempted. If that fails
(e.g. module doesn't exist), the ImportError will now be silenced (for
backwards-compatibility). This *does not* affect
``from ... import ...`` statements.

state of the import system. Also make importlib.invalidate_caches()

Lib/imp.py for imp.source_from_cache() instead of its own C version.
Also change PyImport_ExecCodeModuleObject() to not infer the source
path from the bytecode path like
PyImport_ExecCodeModuleWithPathnames() does. This makes the function
less magical.
This also has the side-effect of removing all uses of MAXPATHLEN in
Python/import.c which can cause failures on really long filenames.
statement (e.g. ``from distutils import msvc9compiler``) that triggers
an ImportError of its own (e.g. the non-existence of winreg), let that

Fix incorrect test of the condition variable state, spotted by
Richard Oudkerk. This could cause the internal condition variable
to grow without bounds.
Fix also its value on Windows and Linux according to its documentation:
"adjustable" indicates if the clock *can be* adjusted, not if it is or was
adjusted.
In most cases, it is not possible to indicate if a clock is or was adjusted.
* Formatting string, int, float and complex use the _PyUnicodeWriter API. It
avoids a temporary buffer in most cases.
* Add _PyUnicodeWriter_WriteStr() to restore the PyAccu optimization: just
keep a reference to the string if the output is only composed of one string
* Disable overallocation when formatting the last argument of str%args and
str.format(args)
* Overallocation allocates at least 100 characters: add min_length attribute
to the _PyUnicodeWriter structure
* Add new private functions: _PyUnicode_FastCopyCharacters(),
_PyUnicode_FastFill() and _PyUnicode_FromASCII()
The speed up is around 20% in average.
importlib.abc.FileLoader.load_module()/get_filename() and
importlib.machinery.ExtensionFileLoader.load_module() have their

ncessary information.
This allows for the deprecation of
imp.load_source()/load_compile()/load_package().
This introduces a new function, imp.extension_suffixes(), which is
currently undocumented. That is forthcoming once issue #14657 is

for performance. While get_magic() could move to Lib/imp.py, having to

It is now possible to use a custom type for the __builtins__ namespace, instead
of a dict. It can be used for sandboxing for example. Raise also a NameError
instead of ImportError if __build_class__ name if not found in __builtins__.
Add INCREFs, fix args->kwargs, and a second args==NULL check was removed,

__loader__.
Since import now sets __loader__ on all modules it creates and
imp.reload() already relied on the attribute for modules that import
didn't create, the only potential compatibility issue is if people
were deleting the attribute on modules and expecting imp.reload() to
continue to work.
rewriting functionality in pure Python.
To start, imp.new_module() has been rewritten in pure Python, put into

of sys.modules when possible.
This is being done for two reasons. One is to gain a little bit of
performance by skipping an unnecessary dict lookup in sys.modules. But
the other (and main) reason is to be a little bit more clear in how
things should work from the perspective of import's interactions with
loaders. Otherwise loaders can easily forget to return the module even
though PEP 302 explicitly states they are expected to return the module
they loaded.
importlib._bootstrap is now frozen into Python/importlib.h and stored
as _frozen_importlib in sys.modules. Py_Initialize() loads the frozen
code along with sys and imp and then uses _frozen_importlib._install()
to set builtins.__import__() w/ _frozen_importlib.__import__().
Currently import does not use these attributes as they are planned
for use by importlib (which will be another commit).

ucs1, ucs2 and ucs4 libraries have to scan created substring to find the
maximum character, whereas it is not need to ASCII strings. Because ASCII
strings are common, it is useful to optimize ASCII.
These were just an artifact of the old unicode concatenation hack and likely
just penalized other kinds of adding. Also, this fixes __(i)add__ on string

On FreeBSD6, pthread_kill() doesn't work on the main thread before the creation

initialize the pthread library.
Add also a test for this use case, test written by Charles-François Natali.

__import__ does a little trick when importing from bytecode by
back-patching the co_filename paths to point to the file location
where the code object was loaded from, *not* where the code object was
originally created. This allows co_filename to point to a valid path.
Problem is that co_filename is immutable from Python, so a private
function -- imp._fix_co_filename() -- had to be introduced in order to
get things working properly. Originally the plan was to add a file
argument to marshal.loads(), but that failed as the algorithm used by
__import__ is not fully recursive as one might expect, so to be fully
backwards-compatible the code used by __import__ needed to be exposed.
This closes issue #6811 by taking a different approach than outlined
in the issue.
Use Unicode for module name and paths in the following functions:
* PyImport_ImportModuleLevel()
* add_submodule()
* ensure_from_list()
* get_parent()
* import_module_level()
* import_submodule()
* load_next()
* mark_miss()
* Use Unicode for module name and path in the following functions:
* get_file()
* load_source_module(), parse_source_module()
* make_compiled_pathname(), check_compiled_module(),
read_compiled_module(), load_compiled_module(), write_compiled_module(),
update_compiled_module()
* On Windows, use CreateDirectoryW() instead of mkdir()
* update_compiled_module() cannot fail anymore
* Document the function
* Use RegQueryValueW() instead of RegQueryValueA()
* Use _Py_fopen() instead of fopen()
* Allocate registry key on the heap, not on the stack, and handle memory
allocation failure
* Handle Python exception in find_module()
- is_builtin(), init_builtin(), load_builtin() and other builtin related
functions use Unicode strings, instead of byte strings
- Rename _PyImport_FixupExtensionUnicode() to _PyImport_FixupExtensionObject()
- Rename _PyImport_FindExtensionUnicode() to _PyImport_FindExtensionObject()
And as a consequence, mark also name argument of
_PyImport_FindExtensionUnicode() constant too. But I plan to change this
argument type to PyObject* later.
Issue #11168: Remove filename debug variable from PyEval_EvalFrameEx().

DeprecationWarning is now silent by default.
This was originally suggested by Guido, discussed on the stdlib-sig mailing
list, and given the OK by Guido directly to me. What this change essentially
means is that Python has taken a policy of silencing warnings that are only
of interest to developers by default. This should prevent users from seeing
warnings which are triggered by an application being run against a new
interpreter before the app developer has a chance to update their code.

http://code.google.com/p/data-race-test/wiki/ThreadSanitizer is a dynamic data
race detector that runs on top of valgrind. With this patch, the binaries at
http://code.google.com/p/data-race-test/wiki/ThreadSanitizer#Binaries pass many
but not all of the Python tests. All of regrtest still passes outside of tsan.
I've implemented part of the C1x atomic types so that we can explicitly mark
variables that are used across threads, and get defined behavior as compilers
advance.
I've added tsan's client header and implementation to the codebase in
dynamic_annotations.{h,c} (docs at
http://code.google.com/p/data-race-test/wiki/DynamicAnnotations).
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get helgrind and drd to give sensible
error messages, even when I use their client annotations, so I'm not supporting
them.

relies on the system threading library, so as to avoid a semi-busy wait

The pure python implementation is retained so that it can continue to be

The unittest executes tests on both code paths to guarantee compatibility.

Fix issue #1590864, multiple threads and fork() can cause deadlocks, by
acquiring the import lock around fork() calls. This prevents other threads
from having that lock while the fork happens, and is the recommended way of
dealing with such issues. There are two other locks we care about, the GIL
and the Thread Local Storage lock. The GIL is obviously held when calling
Python functions like os.fork(), and the TLS lock is explicitly reallocated
instead, while also deleting now-orphaned TLS data.
This only fixes calls to os.fork(), not extension modules or embedding
programs calling C's fork() directly. Solving that requires a new set of API
functions, and possibly a rewrite of the Python/thread_*.c mess. Add a
warning explaining the problem to the documentation in the mean time.
This also changes behaviour a little on AIX. Before, AIX (but only AIX) was
getting the import lock reallocated, seemingly to avoid this very same
problem. This is not the right approach, because the import lock is a
re-entrant one, and reallocating would do the wrong thing when forking while
holding the import lock.
Will backport to 2.6, minus the tiny AIX behaviour change.

http://www.google.com/codesearch/p?hl=en#u_9_nDrchrw/pygame-1.7.1release/src/base.c&q=PyCode_Addr2Line),
which is replaced by the tb_lineno field. So we may be able to deprecate
PyCode_Addr2Line entirely for external use.

Issue #6042:
lnotab-based tracing is very complicated and isn't documented very well. There
were at least 3 comment blocks purporting to document co_lnotab, and none did a
very good job. This patch unifies them into Objects/lnotab_notes.txt which
tries to completely capture the current state of affairs.
I also discovered that we've attached 2 layers of patches to the basic tracing
scheme. The first layer avoids jumping to instructions that don't start a line,
to avoid problems in if statements and while loops. The second layer
discovered that jumps backward do need to trace at instructions that don't
start a line, so it added extra lnotab entries for 'while' and 'for' loops, and
added a special case for backward jumps within the same line. I replaced these
patches by just treating forward and backward jumps differently.
