Jan Beulich ccbcdf7cf1 xen/x86: replace order-based range checking of M2P table by linear one
The order-based approach is not only less efficient (requiring a shift
and a compare, typical generated code looking like this

	mov	eax, [machine_to_phys_order]
	mov	ecx, eax
	shr	ebx, cl
	test	ebx, ebx
	jnz	...

whereas a direct check requires just a compare, like in

	cmp	ebx, [machine_to_phys_nr]
	jae	...

), but also slightly dangerous in the 32-on-64 case - the element
address calculation can wrap if the next power of two boundary is
sufficiently far away from the actual upper limit of the table, and
hence can result in user space addresses being accessed (with it being
unknown what may actually be mapped there).

Additionally, the elimination of the mistaken use of fls() here (should
have been __fls()) fixes a latent issue on x86-64 that would trigger
if the code was run on a system with memory extending beyond the 44-bit
boundary.

Andy Lutomirski 3ae36655b9 x86-64: Rework vsyscall emulation and add vsyscall= parameter
There are three choices:

vsyscall=native: Vsyscalls are native code that issues the
corresponding syscalls.

vsyscall=emulate (default): Vsyscalls are emulated by instruction
fault traps, tested in the bad_area path. The actual contents of
the vsyscall page is the same as the vsyscall=native case except
that it's marked NX. This way programs that make assumptions about
what the code in the page does will not be confused when they read
that code.

vsyscall=none: Trying to execute a vsyscall will segfault.

Andy Lutomirski fce8dc0642 x86-64: Wire up getcpu syscall
getcpu is available as a vdso entry and an emulated vsyscall.
Programs that for some reason don't want to use the vdso should
still be able to call getcpu without relying on the slow emulated
vsyscall. It costs almost nothing to expose it as a real syscall.

We also need this for the following patch in vsyscall=native mode.

Mathias Krause 66be895158 crypto: sha1 - SSSE3 based SHA1 implementation for x86-64
This is an assembler implementation of the SHA1 algorithm using the
Supplemental SSE3 (SSSE3) instructions or, when available, the
Advanced Vector Extensions (AVX).

Testing with the tcrypt module shows the raw hash performance is up to
2.3 times faster than the C implementation, using 8k data blocks on a
Core 2 Duo T5500. For the smalest data set (16 byte) it is still 25%
faster.

Since this implementation uses SSE/YMM registers it cannot safely be
used in every situation, e.g. while an IRQ interrupts a kernel thread.
The implementation falls back to the generic SHA1 variant, if using
the SSE/YMM registers is not possible.

With this algorithm I was able to increase the throughput of a single
IPsec link from 344 Mbit/s to 464 Mbit/s on a Core 2 Quad CPU using
the SSSE3 variant -- a speedup of +34.8%.

Saving and restoring SSE/YMM state might make the actual throughput
fluctuate when there are FPU intensive userland applications running.
For example, meassuring the performance using iperf2 directly on the
machine under test gives wobbling numbers because iperf2 uses the FPU
for each packet to check if the reporting interval has expired (in the
above test I got min/max/avg: 402/484/464 MBit/s).

Using this algorithm on a IPsec gateway gives much more reasonable and
stable numbers, albeit not as high as in the directly connected case.
Here is the result from an RFC 2544 test run with a EXFO Packet Blazer
FTB-8510:

 frame size sha1-generic sha1-ssse3 delta
    64 byte 37.5 MBit/s 37.5 MBit/s 0.0%
   128 byte 56.3 MBit/s 62.5 MBit/s +11.0%
   256 byte 87.5 MBit/s 100.0 MBit/s +14.3%
   512 byte 131.3 MBit/s 150.0 MBit/s +14.2%
  1024 byte 162.5 MBit/s 193.8 MBit/s +19.3%
  1280 byte 175.0 MBit/s 212.5 MBit/s +21.4%
  1420 byte 175.0 MBit/s 218.7 MBit/s +25.0%
  1518 byte 150.0 MBit/s 181.2 MBit/s +20.8%

The throughput for the largest frame size is lower than for the
previous size because the IP packets need to be fragmented in this
case to make there way through the IPsec tunnel.

Borislav Petkov dfb09f9b7a x86, amd: Avoid cache aliasing penalties on AMD family 15h
This patch provides performance tuning for the "Bulldozer" CPU. With its
shared instruction cache there is a chance of generating an excessive
number of cache cross-invalidates when running specific workloads on the
cores of a compute module.

This excessive amount of cross-invalidations can be observed if cache
lines backed by shared physical memory alias in bits [14:12] of their
virtual addresses, as those bits are used for the index generation.

This patch addresses the issue by clearing all the bits in the [14:12]
slice of the file mapping's virtual address at generation time, thus
forcing those bits the same for all mappings of a single shared library
across processes and, in doing so, avoids instruction cache aliases.

It also adds the command line option "align_va_addr=(32|64|on|off)" with
which virtual address alignment can be enabled for 32-bit or 64-bit x86
individually, or both, or be completely disabled.

This change leaves virtual region address allocation on other families
and/or vendors unaffected.

Andy Lutomirski 318f5a2a67 x86-64: Add user_64bit_mode paravirt op
Three places in the kernel assume that the only long mode CPL 3
selector is __USER_CS. This is not true on Xen -- Xen's sysretq
changes cs to the magic value 0xe033.

Two of the places are corner cases, but as of "x86-64: Improve
vsyscall emulation CS and RIP handling"
(c9712944b2), vsyscalls will segfault
if called with Xen's extra CS selector. This causes a panic when
older init builds die.

It seems impossible to make Xen use __USER_CS reliably without
taking a performance hit on every system call, so this fixes the
tests instead with a new paravirt op. It's a little ugly because
ptrace.h can't include paravirt.h.

Linus Torvalds 33f35f2a4e x86: don't include xen/xen.h in <asm/io.h> unless XEN is enabled
Dmitry Kasatkin reports:
"kernel-devel package with kernel headers have no <include/xen>
directory if XEN is disabled. Modules which inclide asm/io.h won't
   compile.

XEN related content is behind the CONFIG_XEN flag in the io.h. And
<xen/xen.h> should be also behind CONFIG_XEN flag."

So move the include of <xen/xen.h> down into the section that is
conditional on CONFIG_XEN.

H. Peter Anvin 628c6246d4 x86, random: Architectural inlines to get random integers with RDRAND
Architectural inlines to get random ints and longs using the RDRAND
instruction.

Intel has introduced a new RDRAND instruction, a Digital Random Number
Generator (DRNG), which is functionally an high bandwidth entropy
source, cryptographic whitener, and integrity monitor all built into
hardware. This enables RDRAND to be used directly, bypassing the
kernel random number pool.

For technical documentation, see:

http://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/download-the-latest-bull-mountain-software-implementation-guide/

In this patch, this is *only* used for the nonblocking random number
pool. RDRAND is a nonblocking source, similar to our /dev/urandom,
and is therefore not a direct replacement for /dev/random. The
architectural hooks presented in the previous patch only feed the
kernel internal users, which only use the nonblocking pool, and so
this is not a problem.

Since this instruction is available in userspace, there is no reason
to have a /dev/hw_rng device driver for the purpose of feeding rngd.
This is especially so since RDRAND is a nonblocking source, and needs
additional whitening and reduction (see the above technical
documentation for details) in order to be of "pure entropy source"
quality.

The CONFIG_EXPERT compile-time option can be used to disable this use
of RDRAND.

Arun Sharma 7847777a45 atomic: cleanup asm-generic atomic*.h inclusion
After changing all consumers of atomics to include <linux/atomic.h>, we
ran into some compile time errors due to this dependency chain:

linux/atomic.h
  -> asm/atomic.h
    -> asm-generic/atomic-long.h

where atomic-long.h could use funcs defined later in linux/atomic.h
without a prototype. This patches moves the code that includes
asm-generic/atomic*.h to linux/atomic.h.

Archs that need <asm-generic/atomic64.h> need to select
CONFIG_GENERIC_ATOMIC64 from now on (some of them used to include it
unconditionally).

Jonas Bonn a4e05276a1 asm-generic: move archictures to common delay.h
This patch moves the in-tree architectures that were using the 'generic'
delay.h over to using the header file in asm-generic.

This is not done using the generic-y mechanism as none of these arch's
have started using that mechanism yet. This is a trivial change to make
later when the arch begins using generic-y.

Note the subtle change to the avr32 and SH architectures where the argument
to __const_udelay was previously using the rounded down constant value
instead of the rounded up value.

Jan Beulich ac619f4eba x86: Serialize SMP bootup CMOS accesses on rtc_lock
With CPU hotplug, there is a theoretical race between other CMOS
(namely RTC) accesses and those done in the SMP secondary
processor bringup path.

I am unware of the problem having been noticed by anyone in practice,
but it would very likely be rather spurious and very hard to reproduce.
So to be on the safe side, acquire rtc_lock around those accesses.

Jan Beulich a750036f35 x86: Fix write lock scalability 64-bit issue
With the write lock path simply subtracting RW_LOCK_BIAS there
is, on large systems, the theoretical possibility of overflowing
the 32-bit value that was used so far (namely if 128 or more
CPUs manage to do the subtraction, but don't get to do the
inverse addition in the failure path quickly enough).

A first measure is to modify RW_LOCK_BIAS itself - with the new
value chosen, it is good for up to 2048 CPUs each allowed to
nest over 2048 times on the read path without causing an issue.
Quite possibly it would even be sufficient to adjust the bias a
little further, assuming that allowing for significantly less
nesting would suffice.

However, as the original value chosen allowed for even more
nesting levels, to support more than 2048 CPUs (possible
currently only for 64-bit kernels) the lock itself gets widened
to 64 bits.

Cyrill Gorcunov f912987097 perf, x86: P4 PMU - Introduce event alias feature
Instead of hw_nmi_watchdog_set_attr() weak function
and appropriate x86_pmu::hw_watchdog_set_attr() call
we introduce even alias mechanism which allow us
to drop this routines completely and isolate quirks
of Netburst architecture inside P4 PMU code only.

The main idea remains the same though -- to allow
nmi-watchdog and perf top run simultaneously.

Note the aliasing mechanism applies to generic
PERF_COUNT_HW_CPU_CYCLES event only because arbitrary
event (say passed as RAW initially) might have some
additional bits set inside ESCR register changing
the behaviour of event and we can't guarantee anymore
that alias event will give the same result.

P.S. Thanks a huge to Don and Steven for for testing
     and early review.

Len Brown abe48b1082 x86, intel, power: Initialize MSR_IA32_ENERGY_PERF_BIAS
Since 2.6.36 (23016bf0d2), Linux prints the existence of "epb" in /proc/cpuinfo,
Since 2.6.38 (d5532ee7b4), the x86_energy_perf_policy(8) utility has
been available in-tree to update MSR_IA32_ENERGY_PERF_BIAS.

However, the typical BIOS fails to initialize the MSR, presumably
because this is handled by high-volume shrink-wrap operating systems...

Linux distros, on the other hand, do not yet invoke x86_energy_perf_policy(8).
As a result, WSM-EP, SNB, and later hardware from Intel will run in its
default hardware power-on state (performance), which assumes that users
care for performance at all costs and not for energy efficiency.
While that is fine for performance benchmarks, the hardware's intended default
operating point is "normal" mode...

Initialize the MSR to the "normal" by default during kernel boot.

x86_energy_perf_policy(8) is available to change the default after boot,
should the user have a different preference.

This information is acquired through the run_delay field of
delayacct/schedstats infrastructure, that counts time spent in a
runqueue but not running.

Steal time is a per-cpu information, so the traditional MSR-based
infrastructure is used. A new msr, KVM_MSR_STEAL_TIME, holds the
memory area address containing information about steal time

This patch contains the hypervisor part of the steal time infrasructure,
and can be backported independently of the guest portion.

Glauber Costa 9ddabbe72e KVM: KVM Steal time guest/host interface
To implement steal time, we need the hypervisor to pass the guest information
about how much time was spent running other processes outside the VM.
This is per-vcpu, and using the kvmclock structure for that is an abuse

In this patchset, I am introducing a new msr, KVM_MSR_STEAL_TIME, that

fails. But a problem is found in the guest state, the behavior is more

Takuya Yoshikawa b5c9ff731f KVM: x86 emulator: Avoid clearing the whole decode_cache
During tracing the emulator, we noticed that init_emulate_ctxt()
sometimes took a bit longer time than we expected.

This patch is for mitigating the problem by some degree.

By looking into the function, we soon notice that it clears the whole
decode_cache whose size is about 2.5K bytes now. Furthermore, most of
the bytes are taken for the two read_cache arrays, which are used only
by a few instructions.

Considering the fact that we are not assuming the cache arrays have
been cleared when we store actual data, we do not need to clear the
arrays: 2K bytes elimination. In addition, we can avoid clearing the
fetch_cache and regs arrays.

This patch changes the initialization not to clear the arrays.

On our 64-bit host, init_emulate_ctxt() becomes 0.3 to 0.5us faster with
this patch applied.

I triggered a triple fault with gcc 4.5.1 because it did not
honor the inline annotation to arch_local_save_flags() function
and that function was added to the pool of functions traced by
the function tracer.

When preempt_schedule() called arch_local_save_flags() (called
by irqs_disabled()), it was traced, but the first thing the
function tracer does is disable preemption. When it enables
preemption, the NEED_RESCHED flag will not have been cleared and
the preemption check will trigger the call to preempt_schedule()
again.

Although the dynamic function tracer crashed immediately, the
static version of the function tracer (CONFIG_DYNAMIC_FTRACE is
not set) actually was able to show where the problem was.

It went on for a while before it triple faulted with a corrupted
stack.

The arch_local_save_flags and arch_local_irq_* functions should
not be traced. Even though they are marked as inline, gcc may
still make them a function and enable tracing of them.

The simple solution is to just mark them as notrace. I had to
add the <linux/types.h> for this file to include the notrace
tag.

Tejun Heo a26474e864 x86-32, NUMA: Fix boot regression caused by NUMA init unification on highmem machines
During 32/64 NUMA init unification, commit 797390d855 ("x86-32,
NUMA: use sparse_memory_present_with_active_regions()") made
32bit mm init call memory_present() automatically from
active_regions instead of leaving it to each NUMA init path.

This commit description is inaccurate - memory_present() calls
aren't the same for flat and numaq. After the commit,
memory_present() is only called for the intersection of e820 and
NUMA layout. Before, on flatmem, memory_present() would be
called from 0 to max_pfn. After, it would be called only on the
areas that e820 indicates to be populated.

This is how x86_64 works and should be okay as memmap is allowed
to contain holes; however, x86_32 DISCONTIGMEM is missing
early_pfn_valid(), which makes memmap_init_zone() assume that
memmap doesn't contain any hole. This leads to the following
oops if e820 map contains holes as it often does on machine with
near or more 4GiB of memory by calling pfn_to_page() on a pfn
which isn't mapped to a NUMA node, a reported by Conny Seidel:

Jamie Iles 06c3df4952 clocksource: apb: Share APB timer code with other platforms
The APB timers are an IP block from Synopsys (DesignWare APB timers)
and are also found in other systems including ARM SoC's. This patch
adds functions for creating clock_event_devices and clocksources from
APB timers but does not do the resource allocation. This is handled
in a higher layer to allow the timers to be created from multiple
methods such as platform_devices.

KAMEZAWA Hiroyuki c6830c2260 Fix node_start/end_pfn() definition for mm/page_cgroup.c
commit 21a3c96 uses node_start/end_pfn(nid) for detection start/end
of nodes. But, it's not defined in linux/mmzone.h but defined in
/arch/???/include/mmzone.h which is included only under
CONFIG_NEED_MULTIPLE_NODES=y.

Then, we see
  mm/page_cgroup.c: In function 'page_cgroup_init':
mm/page_cgroup.c:308: error: implicit declaration of function 'node_start_pfn'
mm/page_cgroup.c:309: error: implicit declaration of function 'node_end_pfn'

So, fixiing page_cgroup.c is an idea...

But node_start_pfn()/node_end_pfn() is a very generic macro and
should be implemented in the same manner for all archs.
(m32r has different implementation...)

This patch removes definitions of node_start/end_pfn() in each archs
and defines a unified one in linux/mmzone.h. It's not under
CONFIG_NEED_MULTIPLE_NODES, now.

A result of macro expansion is here (mm/page_cgroup.c)

for !NUMA
 start_pfn = ((&contig_page_data)->node_start_pfn);
  end_pfn = ({ pg_data_t *__pgdat = (&contig_page_data); __pgdat->node_start_pfn + __pgdat->node_spanned_pages;});

for NUMA (x86-64)
  start_pfn = ((node_data[nid])->node_start_pfn);
  end_pfn = ({ pg_data_t *__pgdat = (node_data[nid]); __pgdat->node_start_pfn + __pgdat->node_spanned_pages;});

Changelog:
 - fixed to avoid using "nid" twice in node_end_pfn() macro.

Christoph Lameter 3824abd127 x86: Add support for cmpxchg_double
A simple implementation that only supports the word size and does not
have a fallback mode (would require a spinlock).

Add 32 and 64 bit support for cmpxchg_double. cmpxchg double uses
the cmpxchg8b or cmpxchg16b instruction on x86 processors to compare
and swap 2 machine words. This allows lockless algorithms to move more
context information through critical sections.

Set a flag CONFIG_CMPXCHG_DOUBLE to signal that support for double word
cmpxchg detection has been build into the kernel. Note that each subsystem
using cmpxchg_double has to implement a fall back mechanism as long as
we offer support for processors that do not implement cmpxchg_double.

cpw@sgi.com ae90c232be x86, UV: Correct UV2 BAU destination timeout
Correct the UV2 broacast assist unit's destination timeout
period. And the activation status register in UV2 should be

This patch is critical for TLB shootdown on an Altix UV2 system

 Destination timeout period:
The period is set in 4 bits of memory-mapped register MISC_CONTROL.
The left bit toggles base period between 10us and 80us.
The other 3 bits are the multiplier.
 Decimal 15, hex f, gives the maximum: 7 * 80us

Commit 916f676f8d started reserving boot service code since some systems

However, in some cases those areas will overlap with reserved regions.
The proper medium-term fix is to fix the bootloader to prevent the

but the kernel should check for this possibility, and only reserve regions
which can be reserved.

Andy Lutomirski 5cec93c216 x86-64: Emulate legacy vsyscalls
There's a fair amount of code in the vsyscall page. It contains
a syscall instruction (in the gettimeofday fallback) and who
knows what will happen if an exploit jumps into the middle of
some other code.

Reduce the risk by replacing the vsyscalls with short magic
incantations that cause the kernel to emulate the real
vsyscalls. These incantations are useless if entered in the
middle.

This causes vsyscalls to be a little more expensive than real
syscalls. Fortunately sensible programs don't use them.
The only exception is time() which is still called by glibc
through the vsyscall - but calling time() millions of times
per second is not sensible. glibc has this fixed in the
development tree.

This patch is not perfect: the vread_tsc and vread_hpet
functions are still at a fixed address. Fixing that might
involve making alternative patching work in the vDSO.

No code changes. Reformat definitions to make it more readable.

I fixed alignment of comments in the structure definitions.

Also aligned comments and most field definitions & values. Also
sorted the defines for the SHIFT & MASK values for each MMR.
This make the file visually much more acceptable.

Some of the symbol names are still quite long. The file is based
on post-processing of verilog definitions that are used for the
node controller chip design. Although some symbol names are not
what I would chose, I would like to maintain compatibility with
the names used by the chip designers. We have a number of
cross-reference utilities & having common names is important.

at closely and I can't find any problems.

setns is an easy system call to wire up. It just takes two ints so I
don't expect any weird architecture porting problems.

While doing this I have noticed that we have some architectures that are
very slow to get new system calls. cris seems to be the slowest where
the last system calls wired up were preadv and pwritev. avr32 is weird
in that recvmmsg was wired up but never declared in unistd.h. frv is
behind with perf_event_open being the last syscall wired up. On h8300
the last system call wired up was epoll_wait. On m32r the last system
call wired up was fallocate. mn10300 has recvmmsg as the last system
call wired up. The rest seem to at least have syncfs wired up which was
new in the 2.6.39.

Dan Magenheimer 5bc20fc597 xen: cleancache shim to Xen Transcendent Memory
This patch provides a shim between the kernel-internal cleancache
API (see Documentation/mm/cleancache.txt) and the Xen Transcendent
Memory ABI (see http://oss.oracle.com/projects/tmem).

Xen tmem provides "hypervisor RAM" as an ephemeral page-oriented
pseudo-RAM store for cleancache pages, shared cleancache pages,
and frontswap pages. Tmem provides enterprise-quality concurrency,
full save/restore and live migration support, compression
and deduplication.

A presentation showing up to 8% faster performance and up to 52%
reduction in sectors read on a kernel compile workload, despite
aggressive in-kernel page reclamation ("self-ballooning") can be
found at:

Roland Dreier dbee8a0aff x86: remove 32-bit versions of readq()/writeq()
The presense of a writeq() implementation on 32-bit x86 that splits the
64-bit write into two 32-bit writes turns out to break the mpt2sas driver
(and in general is risky for drivers as was discussed in
<http://lkml.kernel.org/r/adaab6c1h7c.fsf@cisco.com>). To fix this,
revert 2c5643b1c5 ("x86: provide readq()/writeq() on 32-bit too") and
follow-on cleanups.

This unfortunately leads to pushing non-atomic definitions of readq() and
write() to various x86-only drivers that in the meantime started using the
definitions in the x86 version of <asm/io.h>. However as discussed
exhaustively, this is actually the right thing to do, because the right
way to split a 64-bit transaction is hardware dependent and therefore
belongs in the hardware driver (eg mpt2sas needs a spinlock to make sure
no other accesses occur in between the two halves of the access).

Build tested on 32- and 64-bit x86 allmodconfig.

Cliff Wickman f073cc8f39 x86, UV: Clean up uv_tlb.c
SGI UV's uv_tlb.c driver has become rather hard to read, with overly large
functions, non-standard coding style and (way) too long variable, constant
and function names and non-obvious code flow sequences.

This patch improves the readability and maintainability of the driver
significantly, by doing the following strict code cleanups with no side
effects:

 - Split long functions into shorter logical functions.

 - Shortened some variable and structure member names.

 - Added special functions for reads and writes of MMR regs with
   very long names.

 - Added the 'tunables' table to shortened tunables_write().

 - Added the 'stat_description' table to shorten uv_ptc_proc_write().

 - Pass fewer 'stat' arguments where it can be derived from the 'bcp'
   argument.

 - Function definitions consistent on one line, and inline in few (short) cases.

 - Moved some small structures and an atomic inline function to the header file.

 - Moved some local variables to the blocks where they are used.

 - Updated the copyright date.

 - Shortened uv_write_global_mmr64() etc. using some aliasing; no
line breaks. Renamed many uv_.. functions that are not exported.

 - Aligned structure fields.
[ note that not all structures are aligned the same way though; I'd like
to keep the extensive commenting in some of them. ]

 - Shortened some long structure names.

 - Standard pass/fail exit from init_per_cpu()

 - Vertical alignment for mass initializations.

 - More separation between blocks of code.

Tested on a 16-processor Altix UV.

Rafael J. Wysocki 354258011e PM / Hibernate: Remove arch_prepare_suspend()
All architectures supporting hibernation define
arch_prepare_suspend() as an empty function, so remove it.

Andy Lutomirski 44259b1abf x86-64: Move vread_tsc into a new file with sensible options
vread_tsc is short and hot, and it's userspace code so the usual
reasons to enable -pg and turn off sibling calls don't apply.

(OK, turning off sibling calls has no effect. But it might
someday...)

As an added benefit, tsc.c is profilable now.

Andy Lutomirski 8c49d9a74b x86-64: Clean up vdso/kernel shared variables
Variables that are shared between the vdso and the kernel are
currently a bit of a mess. They are each defined with their own
magic, they are accessed differently in the kernel, the vsyscall page,
and the vdso, and one of them (vsyscall_clock) doesn't even really
exist.

This changes them all to use a common mechanism. All of them are
delcared in vvar.h with a fixed address (validated by the linker
script). In the kernel (as before), they look like ordinary
read-write variables. In the vsyscall page and the vdso, they are
accessed through a new macro VVAR, which gives read-only access.

The vdso is now loaded verbatim into memory without any fixups. As a
side bonus, access from the vdso is faster because a level of
indirection is removed.

While we're at it, pack jiffies and vgetcpu_mode into the same
cacheline.
