mac80211: rework MLME for multiple authentications
inadvertedly broke WMM because it removed, along with
a bunch of other now useless initialisations, the line
initialising sdata->u.mgd.wmm_last_param_set to -1
which would make it adopt any WMM parameter set. If,
as is usually the case, the AP uses WMM parameter set
sequence number zero, we'd never update it until the
AP changes the sequence number.
Add the missing initialisation back to get the WMM
settings from the AP applied locally.

I noticed yesterday, because Jeff had noticed
a speed regression, cf. bug
http://bugzilla.intellinuxwireless.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2138
that the SM PS settings for peers were wrong.
Instead of overwriting the SM PS settings with
the local bits, we need to keep the remote bits.
The bug was part of the original HT code from
over two years ago, but unfortunately nobody
noticed that it makes no sense -- we shouldn't
be overwriting the peer's setting with our own
but rather keep it intact when masking the peer
capabilities with our own.
While fixing that, I noticed that the masking of
capabilities is completely useless for most of
the bits, so also fix those other bits.
Finally, I also noticed that PSMP_SUPPORT no
longer exists in the final 802.11n version, so
also remove that.

On a 32-bit machine, BIT() macro does not give the required
bit value if the bit is mroe than 31. In ieee802_11_parse_elems_crc(),
BIT() is suppossed to get the bit value more than 31 (42 (id of ERP_INFO_IE),
37 (CHANNEL_SWITCH_IE), (42), 32 (POWER_CONSTRAINT_IE), 45 (HT_CAP_IE),
61 (HT_INFO_IE)). As we do not get the required bit value for the above
IEs, crc over these IEs are never calculated, so any dynamic change in these
IEs after the association is not really handled on 32-bit platforms.
This patch fixes this issue.

Not only ps_sdata but also IEEE80211_CONF_PS is to be considered
before restoring PS in scan_ps_disable(). For instance, when ps_sdata
is set but CONF_PS is not set just because the dynamic timer is still
running, a sw scan leads to setting of CONF_PS in scan_ps_disable
instead of restarting the dynamic PS timer.
Also for the above case, a null data frame is to be sent after
returning to operating channel which was not happening with the
current implementation. This patch fixes this too.

An earlier optimization on removing unnecessary traffic on cooked
monitor interfaces ("mac80211: reduce the amount of unnecessary traffic
on cooked monitor interfaces ") ended up removing quite a bit more
than just unnecessary traffic. It was not supposed to remove TX status
reporting for injected frames, but ended up doing it by checking the
injected flag in skb->cb only after that field had been cleared with
memset.. Fix this by taking a local copy of the injected flag before
skb->cb is cleared.
This broke user space applications that depend on getting TX status
notifications for injected data frames. For example, STA inactivity
poll from hostapd did not work and ended up kicking out stations even
if they were still present.

mac80211: A-MPDU Tx add delBA from recipient support
The first problem is that I moved a BUG_ON before various
checks -- thereby making it possible to hit. As the comment
indicates, the BUG_ON can be removed since the ampdu_action
callback must already exist when the state is != IDLE.
The second problem isn't easily exploitable but there's a
race condition due to unconditionally setting the state to
OPERATIONAL when a delBA frame is received, even when no
aggregation session was ever initiated. All the drivers
accept stopping the session even then, but that opens a
race window where crashes could happen before the driver
accepts it. Right now, a WARN_ON may happen with non-HT
drivers, while the race opens only for HT drivers.
For this case, there are two things necessary to fix it:
1) don't process spurious delBA frames, and be more careful
about the session state; don't drop the lock
2) HT drivers need to be prepared to handle a session stop
even before the session was really started -- this is
true for all drivers (that support aggregation) but
iwlwifi which can be fixed easily. The other HT drivers
(ath9k and ar9170) are behaving properly already.

As indicated by the comment, the aMPDU RX reorder code
should logically be after ieee80211_rx_h_check(). The
previous patch moved the code there, and this patch now
hooks it up in that place by introducing a list of skbs
that are then processed by the remaining handlers. The
list may be empty if the function is buffering the skb
to release it later.
The only change needed to the RX data is that the crypto
handler needs to clear the key that may be set from a

With WEXT, it happens frequently that the SME
requests an authentication but then deauthenticates
right away because some new parameters came along.
Every time this happens we print a deauth message
and send a deauth frame, but both of that is rather
confusing. Avoid it by aborting the authentication
process silently, and telling cfg80211 about that.
The patch looks larger than it really is:
__cfg80211_auth_remove() is split out from
cfg80211_send_auth_timeout(), there's no new code
except __cfg80211_auth_canceled() (a one-liner) and

Right now all frames mac80211 hands to the driver
have the IEEE80211_TX_CTL_REQ_TX_STATUS flag set to
request TX status. This isn't really necessary, only
the injected frames need TX status (the latter for
hostapd) so move setting this flag.
The rate control algorithms also need TX status, but
they don't require it.
Also, rt2x00 uses that bit for its own purposes and
seems to require it being set for all frames, but
that can be fixed in rt2x00.
This doesn't really change anything for any drivers
but in the future drivers using hw-rate control may
opt to not report TX status for frames that don't
have the IEEE80211_TX_CTL_REQ_TX_STATUS flag set.

Also, keep track of 4addr in cfg80211 (wireless_dev)

When mac80211 resumes, it currently first sets suspended
to false so the driver can start doing things and we can
receive frames.
However, if we actually receive frames then it can end
up starting some work which adds timers and then later
runs into a BUG_ON in the timer code because it tries
add_timer() on a pending timer.
Fix this by keeping track of the resuming process by
introducing a new variable 'resuming' which gets set to
true early on instead of setting 'suspended' to false,
and allow queueing work but not receiving frames while
resuming.

Some devices implement the entire rate control in
firmware in some way, like wl1271 or like iwlwifi
which does some things in software but not a lot.
Therefore generic software rate control is rather
useless for them and just adds avoidable overhead

It's fairly simple to let drivers indicate that

The netdev broadcast address cannot change from

instead hard-code it. Since we already have an

In order to handle association and authentication in AP mode,
hostapd needs access to the tx status info of its own frames
through a cooked monitor interface. Without this patch the
cooked monitor interfaces also passed on tx status information
for packets from other virtual interfaces. This creates a
significant performance issue on embedded system. Hostapd
tries to work around this by installing a Linux Socket Filter
that only captures the frames it's interested in, however
data duplication and socket filter matching still uses up
enough CPU cycles to be very noticeable on small systems.

The max MCS index is 76, fix the higher check to allow through
frames received at MCS 76. This is a non-issue for current drivers
as MCS 76 is only possible with a device supporting 4 spatial
streams.
While at it change the WARN_ON() on invalid HT rates to a WARN()
to provide more useful information. This will help debug issues
when the driver is passing up a bogus HT rate value.
The rate must map to a valid MCS index which can be any of the
values in the set [0 - 76] (inclusive).

In some situations it might be useful to run a network with an
Access Point and multiple clients, but with each client bridged
to a network behind it. For this to work, both the client and the
AP need to transmit 4-address frames, containing both source and
destination MAC addresses.
With this patch, you can configure a client to communicate using
only 4-address frames for data traffic.
On the AP side you can enable 4-address frames for individual
clients by isolating them in separate AP VLANs which are configured
in 4-address mode.
Such an AP VLAN will be limited to one client only, and this client
will be used as the destination for all traffic on its interface,
regardless of the destination MAC address in the packet headers.
The advantage of this mode compared to regular WDS mode is that it's
easier to configure and does not require a static list of peer MAC
addresses on any side.

Some devices require that all frames to a station
are flushed when that station goes into powersave
mode before being able to send frames to that
station again when it wakes up or polls -- all in
order to avoid reordering and too many or too few
frames being sent to the station when it polls.
Normally, this is the case unless the station
goes to sleep and wakes up very quickly again.
But in that case, frames for it may be pending
on the hardware queues, and thus races could
happen in the case of multiple hardware queues
used for QoS/WMM. Normally this isn't a problem,
but with the iwlwifi mechanism we need to make
sure the race doesn't happen.
This makes mac80211 able to cope with the race
with driver help by a new WLAN_STA_PS_DRIVER
per-station flag that can be controlled by the
driver and tells mac80211 whether it can transmit
frames or not. This flag must be set according to
very specific rules outlined in the documentation
for the function that controls it.
When we buffer new frames for the station, we
normally set the TIM bit right away, but while
the driver has blocked transmission to that sta
we need to avoid that as well since we cannot
respond to the station if it wakes up due to the
TIM bit. Once the driver unblocks, we can set
the TIM bit.
Similarly, when the station just wakes up, we
need to wait until all other frames are flushed
before we can transmit frames to that station,
so the same applies here, we need to wait for
the driver to give the OK.

disabled channels, which could be problematic for
some drivers. Reject such scans, and also ignore

the scan begin/end event only including channels

This makes the mac80211 check for disabled channels
superfluous. At the same time, remove the no-IBSS

Since it is unused anyway, this patch deprecates it

own bits of radiotap information, none currently
does. Also, drivers would have to copy the code
to generate the radiotap bits that now mac80211

that to be in a radiotap vendor namespace and we

code was added that tried to align the radiotap header
position in memory based on the radiotap header length.
Quite obviously, that is completely useless.
Instead of trying to do that, use unaligned accesses
to generate the radiotap header. To properly do that,
we also need to mark struct ieee80211_radiotap_header

(and it should be marked packed anyway since its a

There's currently a very odd bug in mac80211 -- a
hardware scan that is done while the hardware is
really operating on 2.4 GHz will include CCK rates
in the probe request frame, even on 5 GHz (if the
driver uses the mac80211 IEs). Vice versa, if the
hardware is operating on 5 GHz the 2.4 GHz probe
requests will not include CCK rates even though
they should.
Fix this by splitting up cfg80211 scan requests by
band -- recalculating the IEs every time -- and
requesting only per-band scans from the driver.
Apparently this bug hasn't been a problem yet, but

joining of ibss cell when static bssid is provided. In this case
ifibss->bssid is set before the cell is joined and comparing that address

other case of joining a ibss cell without providing a static bssid where
the value of ifibss->bssid is not set before the cell is joined.
Since ifibss->bssid may be set before or after joining the cell we do not
learn anything by comparing it to a known bss. Remove this check.

ieee80211_rx() must be called with softirqs disabled
since the networking stack requires this for netif_rx()
and some code in mac80211 can assume that it can not
be processing its own tasklet and this call at the same
time.
It may be possible to remove this requirement after a
careful audit of mac80211 and doing any needed locking

When a scan completes, we call ieee80211_sta_find_ibss(),
which is also called from other places. When the scan was
done in software, there's no problem as both run from the
single-threaded mac80211 workqueue and are thus serialised
against each other, but with hardware scan the completion
can be in a different context and race against callers of
this function from the workqueue (e.g. due to beacon RX).
So instead of calling ieee80211_sta_find_ibss() directly,
just arm the timer and have it fire, scheduling the work,
which will invoke ieee80211_sta_find_ibss() (if that is
appropriate in the current state).

Consider the following step-by step:
1. A STA authenticates and associates with the AP and exchanges
traffic.
2. The STA reports to the AP that it is going to PS state.
3. Some time later the STA device goes to the stand-by mode (not only
its wi-fi card, but the device itself) and drops the association state
without sending a disassociation frame.
4. The STA device wakes up and begins authentication with an
Auth frame as it hasn't been authenticated/associated previously.
At the step 4 the AP "remembers" the STA and considers it is still in
the PS state, so the AP buffers frames, which it has to send to the STA.
But the STA isn't actually in the PS state and so it neither checks
TIM bits nor reports to the AP that it isn't power saving.
Because of that authentication/[re]association fails.
To fix authentication/[re]association stage of this issue, Auth, Assoc
Resp and Reassoc Resp frames are transmitted disregarding of STA's power
saving state.
N.B. This patch doesn't fix further data frame exchange after
authentication/[re]association. A patch in hostapd is required to fix
that.

When the DTIM setting is read from beacons, mac80211 will
assume it is 1 if the TIM IE is not present or the value
is 0. This sounds fine, but the same function processes
probe responses as well, which don't have a TIM IE. This
leads to overwriting any values previously parsed out of
beacon frames.
Thus, instead of checking for the presence of the TIM IE
when setting the default, simply check whether the DTIM
period value is valid already. If the TIM IE is not there
then the value cannot be valid (it is initialised to 0)
and probe responses received after beacons will not lead
to overwriting an already valid value.

The Ethernet framing is used for a lot of devices these days. Most
prominent are WiFi and WiMAX based devices. However for userspace
application it is important to classify these devices correctly and
not only see them as Ethernet devices. The daemons like HAL, DeviceKit
or even NetworkManager with udev support tries to do the classification
in userspace with a lot trickery and extra system calls. This is not
good and actually reaches its limitations. Especially since the kernel
does know the type of the Ethernet device it is pretty stupid.
To solve this problem the underlying device type needs to be set and
then the value will be exported as DEVTYPE via uevents and available
within udev.
# cat /sys/class/net/wlan0/uevent
DEVTYPE=wlan
INTERFACE=wlan0
IFINDEX=5
This is similar to subsystems like USB and SCSI that distinguish
between hosts, devices, disks, partitions etc.
The new SET_NETDEV_DEVTYPE() is a convenience helper to set the actual
device type. All device types are free form, but for convenience the
same strings as used with RFKILL are choosen.

Due to the way the tasklets work in mac80211 there's
no need to ever disable them.
However, we need to clear the pending packets when
taking down the last interface because otherwise
the tx_pending_tasklet might be queued if the
driver mucks with the queues (which it shouldn't).
I've had a situation occasionally with ar9170 in
which ksoftirq was using 100% CPU time because
a disabled tasklet was scheduled, and I think that
was due to ar9170 receiving a packet while the
tasklet was disabled. That's strange and it really

configuration needed to be postponed to a work struct.
This, however, lead to a problem that we could queue

with their own scheme to delay the configure_filter

things, allow configure_filter to sleep, and add

addr3: Mesh SA

If we have a lot of frames to transmit at once, for
instance with fragmentation, it can be an optimisation
to only tell the DMA engine about them on the last
fragment/frame to avoid banging the IO too much. This
patch allows implementation such an optimisation by
telling the driver when more frames can be expected.
Currently, this is used by mac80211 only on fragmented
frames, but could also be used in the future on other
frames when the queue was full and there are multiple
frames pending.
Note that drivers need to be careful when using this
flag, they need to kick their DMA engines not just
when this flag is clear, but also when the queue gets
full so that progress can be made.

When an interface is configured in the AP mode, the mac80211
implementation doesn't inform the driver to receive PS Poll frames.
It leads to inability to communicate with power-saving stations
reliably.
The FIF_CONTROL flag isn't passed by mac80211 to
ieee80211_ops.configure_filter when an interface is in the AP mode.
And it's ok, because we don't want to receive ACK frames and other
control ones, but only PS Poll ones.
This patch introduces the FIF_PSPOLL filter flag in addition to
FIF_CONTROL, which means for the driver "pass PS Poll frames".
This flag is passed to the driver:
A) When an interface is configured in the AP mode.
B) In all cases, when the FIF_CONTROL flag was passed earlier (in
addition to it).

The mac80211 workqueue exists to enable mac80211 and drivers
to queue their own work on a single threaded workqueue. mac80211
takes care to flush the workqueue during suspend but we never
really had requirements on drivers for how they should use
the workqueue in consideration for suspend.
We extend mac80211 to document how the mac80211 workqueue should
be used, how it should not be used and finally move raw access to
the workqueue to mac80211 only. Drivers and mac80211 use helpers
to queue work onto the mac80211 workqueue:
* ieee80211_queue_work()
* ieee80211_queue_delayed_work()
These helpers will now warn if mac80211 already completed its
suspend cycle and someone is trying to queue work. mac80211
flushes the mac80211 workqueue prior to suspend a few times,
but we haven't taken the care to ensure drivers won't add more
work after suspend. To help with this we add a warning when
someone tries to add work and mac80211 already completed the
suspend cycle.
Drivers should ensure they cancel any work or delayed work
in the mac80211 stop() callback.

When downing interfaces, it's a good idea to tell the driver to
stop sending beacons; that way the driver doesn't need special
code in ops->remove_interface() when it should already handle the
case in bss_info_changed().
This fixes a potential crash with at least ath5k since the vif
pointer will be nullified while beacon interrupts are still active.

Pavel Roskin reported a problem that seems to be due to
software retry of already transmitted frames. It turns
out that we've never done that correctly, but due to
some recent changes it now crashes in the TX code. I've
added a comment in the patch that explains the problem
better and also points to possible solutions -- which
I can't implement right now.

Finally! This is what you've all been waiting for!
This patch makes cfg80211 take care of wext emulation
_completely_ by itself, drivers that don't need things
cfg80211 doesn't do yet don't even need to be aware of
wireless extensions.
This means we can also clean up mac80211's and iwm's
Kconfig and make it possible to build them w/o wext
now!
RIP wext.

Until now we implemented iwfreq for managed mode, we
needed to keep the implementations separate, but now
that we have all versions implemented we can combine
them and export just one handler.

When enqueuing packets on the internal packet queue, we
need to ensure that we have a valid vif pointer since
that is required since the net namespace work. Add some
assertions to verify this, but also don't crash is for
some reason we don't end up with a vif pointer -- warn
and drop the packet in all these cases.
Since this code touches a number of hotpaths, it is
intended to be temporary, or maybe configurable in the
future, at least the bit that is in the path that gets
hit for every packet, ieee80211_tx_pending().

Marcel reported a warning, which quite obviously comes
from an oversight in the code handling deauth frames,
and which resulted in multiple follow-up warnings due
to this missing handling. This patch adds the missing
deauth handling (telling cfg80211 about it) and also
removes the follow-up warnings since they could happen
due to races even if nothing is wrong. I've explained
the races in the comments.

Jan reported that his b43-based laptop hangs during suspend.
The problem turned out to be mac80211 asking the driver to
stop the hardware before removing interfaces, and interface
removal caused b43 to touch the hardware (while down, which
causes the hang).
This patch fixes mac80211 to do reorder these operations to
have them in the correct order -- first remove interfaces
and then stop the hardware. Some more code is necessary to
be able to do so in a race-free manner, in particular it is
necessary to not process frames received during quiescing.

When a station queries us for a PS-poll response, we wrongly
queue the frame on the virtual interface's queue rather than
the pending queue.
Additionally, fix a race condition where we could potentially
send multiple frames to the sleeping station due to using a
station flag rather than a packet flag. When converting to a
packet flag, we can also convert p54 and remove the filter
clearing we added for it.

We were issuing probe requests to the associated AP on the wrong
band by having our beacon timer loss trigger while we are scanning.
When we would scan the timer could hit and force us to send a
probe request to the AP but with a chance we'd be on the wrong band.
This leads to finding no usable bitrate but we should not get so
far on the xmit path. We should not be trying to send these probe
request frames so prevent ieee80211_mgd_probe_ap() from sending
these.
As it turns out all callers of ieee80211_mgd_probe_ap() need this
check so we just move the scan check there. This means we can remove
the recenlty added check during ieee80211_sta_monitor_work().
Additionally we now fix a race condition added by the patch
"mac80211: do not monitor the connection while scanning" which
had the same check in ieee80211_sta_conn_mon_timer(). The race
happens because the timer routine *does* a valid check for
scanning but after it queues work into the mac80211 workqueue
the work callback can kick off with scanning enabled and cause
the same issue we were trying to avoid.
The more appropriate solution would be to disable the respective
timers during scan and re-enable them after scan but requires more
complex code and testing.

When a new MLME work is created, its timeout is initialised
to 0. This is wrong, it could then be thought of as having
an actual timeout in the future (time_is_after_jiffies() can
return true). Instead, it should be initialised to jiffies
so that it will run right away as soon as the mlme work is
executed.

Introduce a new scan flag "SCAN_OFF_CHANNEL" which basically tells us
that we are currently on a different channel for scanning and cannot
RX/TX. "SCAN_SW_SCANNING" tells us that we are currently running a
software scan but we might as well be on the operating channel to RX/TX.
While "SCAN_SW_SCANNING" is set during the whole scan "SCAN_OFF_CHANNEL"
is set when leaving the operating channel and unset when coming back.
Introduce two new scan states "SCAN_LEAVE_OPER_CHANNEL" and
"SCAN_ENTER_OPER_CHANNEL" which basically implement the functionality we
need to leave the operating channel (send a nullfunc to the AP and stop
the queues) and enter it again (send a nullfunc to the AP and start the
queues again).
Enhance the scan state "SCAN_DECISION" to switch back to the operating
channel after each scanned channel. In the future it sould be simple
to enhance the decision state to scan as much channels in a row as the
qos latency allows us.
