Peter Zijlstra ca109491f6 hrtimer: removing all ur callback modes
Impact: cleanup, move all hrtimer processing into hardirq context

This is an attempt at removing some of the hrtimer complexity by
reducing the number of callback modes to 1.

This means that all hrtimer callback functions will be ran from HARD-irq
context.

I went through all the 30 odd hrtimer callback functions in the kernel
and saw only one that I'm not quite sure of, which is the one in
net/can/bcm.c - hence I'm CC-ing the folks responsible for that code.

Furthermore, the hrtimer core now calls callbacks directly with IRQs
disabled in case you try to enqueue an expired timer. If this timer is a
periodic timer (which should use hrtimer_forward() to advance its time)
then it might be possible to end up in an inf. recursive loop due to the
fact that hrtimer_forward() doesn't round up to the next timer
granularity, and therefore keeps on calling the callback - obviously
this needs a fix.

Aside from that, this seems to compile and actually boot on my dual core
test box - although I'm sure there are some bugs in, me not hitting any
makes me certain :-)

Impact: (future) size reduction for large NR_CPUS.

Dynamically allocating cpumasks (when CONFIG_CPUMASK_OFFSTACK) saves

Thomas Gleixner ae99286b4f nohz: disable tick_nohz_kick_tick() for now
Impact: nohz powersavings and wakeup regression

commit fb02fbc14d (NOHZ: restart tick
device from irq_enter()) causes a serious wakeup regression.

While the patch is correct it does not take into account that spurious
wakeups happen on x86. A fix for this issue is available, but we just
revert to the .27 behaviour and let long running softirqs screw
themself.

Disable it for now.

Thomas Gleixner c4bd822e7b NOHZ: fix thinko in the timer restart code path
commit fb02fbc14d (NOHZ: restart tick
device from irq_enter())

solves the problem of stale jiffies when long running softirqs happen
in a long idle sleep period, but it has a major thinko in it:

When the interrupt which came in _is_ the timer interrupt which should
expire ts->sched_timer then we cancel and rearm the timer _before_ it
gets expired in hrtimer_interrupt() to the next period. That means the
call back function is not called. This game can go on for ever :(

Prevent this by making sure to only rearm the timer when the expiry
time is more than one tick_period away. Otherwise keep it running as
it is either already expired or will expiry at the right point to
update jiffies.

Thomas Gleixner fb02fbc14d NOHZ: restart tick device from irq_enter()
We did not restart the tick device from irq_enter() to avoid double
reprogramming and extra events in the return immediate to idle case.

But long lasting softirqs can lead to a situation where jiffies become
stale:

idle()
  tick stopped (reprogrammed to next pending timer)
  halt()
   interrupt
     jiffies updated from irq_enter()
     interrupt handler
     softirq function 1 runs 20ms
     softirq function 2 arms a 10ms timer with a stale jiffies value
     jiffies updated from irq_exit()
     timer wheel has now an already expired timer
     (the one added in function 2)
     timer fires and timer softirq runs

This was discovered when debugging a timer problem which happend only
when the ath5k driver is active. The debugging proved that there is a
softirq function running for more than 20ms, which is a bug by itself.

To solve this we restart the tick timer right from irq_enter(), but do
not go through the other functions which are necessary to return from
idle when need_resched() is set.

Roman Zippel 5cd1c9c5cf timekeeping: fix rounding problem during clock update
Due to a rounding problem during a clock update it's possible for readers
to observe the clock jumping back by 1nsec. The following simplified
example demonstrates the problem:

cycle	xtime
0	0
1000	999999.6
2000	1999999.2
3000	2999998.8
...

1500 =	1499999.4
=	0.0 + 1499999.4
=	999999.6 + 499999.8

When reading the clock only the full nanosecond part is used, while
timekeeping internally keeps nanosecond fractions. If the clock is now
updated at cycle 1500 here, a nanosecond is missing due to the truncation.

The simple fix is to round up the xtime value during the update, this also
changes the distance to the reference time, but the adjustment will
automatically take care that it stays under control.

Thomas Gleixner 27ce4cb4a0 clockevents: prevent mode mismatch on cpu online
Impact: timer hang on CPU online observed on AMD C1E systems

When a CPU is brought online then the broadcast machinery can
be in the one shot state already. Check this and setup the timer
device of the new CPU in one shot mode so the broadcast code
can pick up the next_event value correctly.

Another AMD C1E oddity, as we switch to broadcast immediately and
not after the full bring up via the ACPI cpu idle code.

Thomas Gleixner 302745699c clockevents: check broadcast device not tick device
Impact: Possible hang on CPU online observed on AMD C1E machines.

The broadcast setup code looks at the mode of the tick device to
determine whether it needs to be shut down or setup. This is wrong
when the broadcast mode is set to one shot already. This can happen
when a CPU is brought online as it goes through the periodic setup
first.

The problem went unnoticed as sane systems do not call into that code
before the switch to one shot for the clock event device happens.
The AMD C1E idle routine switches over immediately and thereby shuts
down the just setup device before the first interrupt happens.

Thomas Gleixner 6441402b1f clockevents: prevent cpu online to interfere with nohz
Impact: rare hang which can be triggered on CPU online.

tick_do_timer_cpu keeps track of the CPU which updates jiffies
via do_timer. The value -1 is used to signal, that currently no
CPU is doing this. There are two cases, where the variable can
have this state:

 boot:
    necessary for systems where the boot cpu id can be != 0

 nohz long idle sleep:
    When the CPU which did the jiffies update last goes into
    a long idle sleep it drops the update jiffies duty so
    another CPU which is not idle can pick it up and keep
    jiffies going.

Using the same value for both situations is wrong, as the CPU online
code can see the -1 state when the timer of the newly onlined CPU is
setup. The setup for a newly onlined CPU goes through periodic mode
and can pick up the do_timer duty without being aware of the nohz /
highres mode of the already running system.

Use two separate states and make them constants to avoid magic
numbers confusion.

Thomas Gleixner 2344abbcbd clockevents: make device shutdown robust
The device shut down does not cleanup the next_event variable of the
clock event device. So when the device is reactivated the possible
stale next_event value can prevent the device to be reprogrammed as it
claims to wait on a event already.

This is the root cause of the resurfacing suspend/resume problem,
where systems need key press to come back to life.

Fix this by setting next_event to KTIME_MAX when the device is shut
down. Use a separate function for shutdown which takes care of that
and only keep the direct set mode call in the broadcast code, where we
can not touch the next_event value.

Maciej W. Rozycki 4ff4b9e19a ntp: fix calculation of the next jiffie to trigger RTC sync
We have a bug in the calculation of the next jiffie to trigger the RTC
synchronisation. The aim here is to run sync_cmos_clock() as close as
possible to the middle of a second. Which means we want this function to
be called less than or equal to half a jiffie away from when now.tv_nsec
equals 5e8 (500000000).

If this is not the case for a given call to the function, for this purpose
instead of updating the RTC we calculate the offset in nanoseconds to the
next point in time where now.tv_nsec will be equal 5e8. The calculated
offset is then converted to jiffies as these are the unit used by the
timer.

Hovewer timespec_to_jiffies() used here uses a ceil()-type rounding mode,
where the resulting value is rounded up. As a result the range of
now.tv_nsec when the timer will trigger is from 5e8 to 5e8 + TICK_NSEC
rather than the desired 5e8 - TICK_NSEC / 2 to 5e8 + TICK_NSEC / 2.

As a result if for example sync_cmos_clock() happens to be called at the
time when now.tv_nsec is between 5e8 + TICK_NSEC / 2 and 5e8 to 5e8 +
TICK_NSEC, it will simply be rescheduled HZ jiffies later, falling in the
same range of now.tv_nsec again. Similarly for cases offsetted by an
integer multiple of TICK_NSEC.

This change addresses the problem by subtracting TICK_NSEC / 2 from the
nanosecond offset to the next point in time where now.tv_nsec will be
equal 5e8, effectively shifting the following rounding in
timespec_to_jiffies() so that it produces a rounded-to-nearest result.

Thomas Gleixner 1fb9b7d29d clockevents: prevent endless loop lockup
The C1E/HPET bug reports on AMDX2/RS690 systems where tracked down to a
too small value of the HPET minumum delta for programming an event.

The clockevents code needs to enforce an interrupt event on the clock event
device in some cases. The enforcement code was stupid and naive, as it just
added the minimum delta to the current time and tried to reprogram the device.
When the minimum delta is too small, then this loops forever.

Add a sanity check. Allow reprogramming to fail 3 times, then print a warning
and double the minimum delta value to make sure, that this does not happen again.

Venkatesh Pallipadi 7c1e768974 clockevents: prevent clockevent event_handler ending up handler_noop
There is a ordering related problem with clockevents code, due to which
clockevents_register_device() called after tickless/highres switch
will not work. The new clockevent ends up with clockevents_handle_noop as
event handler, resulting in no timer activity.

The problematic path seems to be

* old device already has hrtimer_interrupt as the event_handler
* new clockevent device registers with a higher rating
* tick_check_new_device() is called
  * clockevents_exchange_device() gets called
    * old->event_handler is set to clockevents_handle_noop
  * tick_setup_device() is called for the new device
    * which sets new->event_handler using the old->event_handler which is noop.

Change the ordering so that new device inherits the proper handler.

This does not have any issue in normal case as most likely all the clockevent
devices are setup before the highres switch. But, can potentially be affecting
some corner case where HPET force detect happens after the highres switch.
This was a problem with HPET in MSI mode code that we have been experimenting
with.

Thanks to the review by Michael Kerrisk a bug in the recent

Miao Xie 3c4fbe5e01 nohz: fix wrong event handler after online an offlined cpu
On the tickless system(CONFIG_NO_HZ=y and CONFIG_HIGH_RES_TIMERS=n), after
I made an offlined cpu online, I found this cpu's event handler was
tick_handle_periodic, not tick_nohz_handler.

After debuging, I found this bug was caused by the wrong tick mode. the
tick mode is not changed to NOHZ_MODE_INACTIVE when the cpu is offline.

John Stultz 2d42244ae7 clocksource: introduce CLOCK_MONOTONIC_RAW
In talking with Josip Loncaric, and his work on clock synchronization (see
btime.sf.net), he mentioned that for really close synchronization, it is
useful to have access to "hardware time", that is a notion of time that is
not in any way adjusted by the clock slewing done to keep close time sync.

Part of the issue is if we are using the kernel's ntp adjusted
representation of time in order to measure how we should correct time, we
can run into what Paul McKenney aptly described as "Painting a road using
the lines we're painting as the guide".

I had been thinking of a similar problem, and was trying to come up with a
way to give users access to a purely hardware based time representation
that avoided users having to know the underlying frequency and mask values
needed to deal with the wide variety of possible underlying hardware
counters.

My solution is to introduce CLOCK_MONOTONIC_RAW. This exposes a
nanosecond based time value, that increments starting at bootup and has no
frequency adjustments made to it what so ever.

The time is accessed from userspace via the posix_clock_gettime() syscall,
passing CLOCK_MONOTONIC_RAW as the clock_id.

Roman Zippel 9a055117d3 clocksource: introduce clocksource_forward_now()
To keep the raw monotonic patch simple first introduce
clocksource_forward_now(), which takes care of the offset since the last
update_wall_time() call and adds it to the clock, so there is no need
anymore to deal with it explicitly at various places, which need to make
significant changes to the clock.

This is also gets rid of the timekeeping_suspend_nsecs, instead of
waiting until resume, the value is accumulated during suspend. In the end
there is only a single user of __get_nsec_offset() left, so I integrated
it back to getnstimeofday().

John Stultz 1aa5dfb751 clocksource: keep track of original clocksource frequency
The clocksource frequency is represented by
clocksource->mult/2^(clocksource->shift).  Currently, when NTP makes
adjustments to the clock frequency, they are made directly to the mult
value.

This has the drawback that once changed, we cannot know what the orignal
mult value was, or how much adjustment has been applied.

This property causes problems in calculating proper ntp intervals when
switching back and forth between clocksources.

This patch separates the current mult value into a mult and mult_orig
pair. The mult_orig value stays constant, while the ntp clocksource
adjustments are done only to the mult value.

This allows for correct ntp interval calculation and additionally lays the
groundwork for a new notion of time, what I'm calling the monotonic-raw
time, which is introduced in a following patch.

Found an interactivity problem on a quad core test-system - simple
CPU loops would occasionally delay the system un an unacceptable way.

After much debugging with Peter Zijlstra it turned out that the problem

(which is unsigned for performance reasons)

Thomas Gleixner b8f8c3cf0a nohz: prevent tick stop outside of the idle loop
Jack Ren and Eric Miao tracked down the following long standing
problem in the NOHZ code:

	scheduler switch to idle task
	enable interrupts

Window starts here

	----> interrupt happens (does not set NEED_RESCHED)
	      	irq_exit() stops the tick

	----> interrupt happens (does set NEED_RESCHED)

	return from schedule()

	cpu_idle(): preempt_disable();

Window ends here

The interrupts can happen at any point inside the race window. The
first interrupt stops the tick, the second one causes the scheduler to
rerun and switch away from idle again and we end up with the tick
disabled.

The fact that it needs two interrupts where the first one does not set
NEED_RESCHED and the second one does made the bug obscure and extremly
hard to reproduce and analyse. Kudos to Jack and Eric.

Solution: Limit the NOHZ functionality to the idle loop to make sure
that we can not run into such a situation ever again.

cpu_idle()
{
	preempt_disable();

	while(1) {
		 tick_nohz_stop_sched_tick(1); <- tell NOHZ code that we
		 			          are in the idle loop

		 while (!need_resched())
		       halt();

		 tick_nohz_restart_sched_tick(); <- disables NOHZ mode
		 preempt_enable_no_resched();
		 schedule();
		 preempt_disable();
	}
}

In hindsight we should have done this forever, but ...

/me grabs a large brown paperbag.

Steven Rostedt af52a90a14 sched_clock: stop maximum check on NO HZ
Working with ftrace I would get large jumps of 11 millisecs or more with
the clock tracer. This killed the latencing timings of ftrace and also
caused the irqoff self tests to fail.

What was happening is with NO_HZ the idle would stop the jiffy counter and
before the jiffy counter was updated the sched_clock would have a bad
delta jiffies to compare with the gtod with the maximum.

The jiffies would stop and the last sched_tick would record the last gtod.
On wakeup, the sched clock update would compare the gtod + delta jiffies
(which would be zero) and compare it to the TSC. The TSC would have
correctly (with a stable TSC) moved forward several jiffies. But because the
jiffies has not been updated yet the clock would be prevented from moving
forward because it would appear that the TSC jumped too far ahead.

The clock would then virtually stop, until the jiffies are updated. Then
the next sched clock update would see that the clock was very much behind
since the delta jiffies is now correct. This would then jump the clock
forward by several jiffies.

This caused ftrace to report several milliseconds of interrupts off
latency at every resume from NO_HZ idle.

This patch adds hooks into the nohz code to disable the checking of the
maximum clock update when nohz is in effect. It resumes the max check
when nohz has updated the jiffies again.

Heiko Carstens 857f3fd7a4 nohz: don't stop idle tick if softirqs are pending.
In case a cpu goes idle but softirqs are pending only an error message is
printed to the console. It may take a very long time until the pending
softirqs will finally be executed. Worst case would be a hanging system.

With this patch the timer tick just continues and the softirqs will be
executed after the next interrupt. Still a delay but better than a
hanging system.

Currently we have at least two device drivers on s390 which under certain
circumstances schedule a tasklet from process context. This is a reason
why we can end up with pending softirqs when going idle. Fixing these
drivers seems to be non-trivial.
However there is no question that the drivers should be fixed.
This patch shouldn't be considered as a bug fix. It just is intended to
keep a system running even if device drivers are buggy.

Thomas Gleixner aa276e1caf x86, clockevents: add C1E aware idle function
C1E on AMD machines is like C3 but without control from the OS. Up to
now we disabled the local apic timer for those machines as it stops
when the CPU goes into C1E. This excludes those machines from high
resolution timers / dynamic ticks, which hurts especially X2 based
laptops.

The current boot time C1E detection has another, more serious flaw
as well: some BIOSes do not enable C1E until the ACPI processor module
is loaded. This causes systems to stop working after that point.

To work nicely with C1E enabled machines we use a separate idle
function, which checks on idle entry whether C1E was enabled in the
Interrupt Pending Message MSR. This allows us to do timer broadcasting
for C1E and covers the late enablement of C1E as well.

Ingo Molnar 02ff375590 softlockup: fix false positives on nohz if CPU is 100% idle for more than 60 seconds
Fix (probably theoretical only) rq->clock update bug:
in tick_nohz_update_jiffies() [which is called on all irq
entry on all cpus where the irq entry hits an idle cpu] we
call touch_softlockup_watchdog() before we update jiffies.
That works fine most of the time when idle timeouts are within
60 seconds. But when an idle timeout is beyond 60 seconds,
jiffies is updated with a jump of more than 60 seconds,
which causes a jump in cpu-clock of more than 60 seconds,
triggering a false positive.

This adds a few more things from the ntp nanokernel related to user space.
It's now possible to select the resolution used of some values via STA_NANO

If some values for adjtimex() are outside the acceptable range, they are now

Roman Zippel f8bd2258e2 remove div_long_long_rem
x86 is the only arch right now, which provides an optimized for
div_long_long_rem and it has the downside that one has to be very careful that
the divide doesn't overflow.

The API is a little akward, as the arguments for the unsigned divide are
signed. The signed version also doesn't handle a negative divisor and
produces worse code on 64bit archs.

There is little incentive to keep this API alive, so this converts the few
users to the new API.

Thomas Gleixner d8bb6f4c16 x86: tsc prevent time going backwards
We already catch most of the TSC problems by sanity checks, but there
is a subtle bug which has been in the code forever. This can cause
time jumps in the range of hours.

This was reported in:
     http://lkml.org/lkml/2007/8/23/96
and
     http://lkml.org/lkml/2008/3/31/23

I was able to reproduce the problem with a gettimeofday loop test on a
dual core and a quad core machine which both have sychronized
TSCs. The TSCs seems not to be perfectly in sync though, but the
kernel is not able to detect the slight delta in the sync check. Still
there exists an extremly small window where this delta can be observed
with a real big time jump. So far I was only able to reproduce this
with the vsyscall gettimeofday implementation, but in theory this
might be observable with the syscall based version as well.

CPU 0 updates the clock source variables under xtime/vyscall lock and
CPU1, where the TSC is slighty behind CPU0, is reading the time right
after the seqlock was unlocked.

The clocksource reference data was updated with the TSC from CPU0 and
the value which is read from TSC on CPU1 is less than the reference
data. This results in a huge delta value due to the unsigned
subtraction of the TSC value and the reference value. This algorithm
can not be changed due to the support of wrapping clock sources like
pm timer.

The huge delta is converted to nanoseconds and added to xtime, which
is then observable by the caller. The next gettimeofday call on CPU1
will show the correct time again as now the TSC has advanced above the
reference value.

To prevent this TSC specific wreckage we need to compare the TSC value
against the reference value and return the latter when it is larger
than the actual TSC value.

I pondered to mark the TSC unstable when the readout is smaller than
the reference value, but this would render an otherwise good and fast
clocksource unusable without a real good reason.

I generally dislike adding optional linux/* includes in asm/* includes -
I'm nervous about this causing include loops.

However, there's a separate point to be discussed here.

That is, what interfaces are expected of every architecture in the kernel.
If generic code wants to be able to set the affinity of interrupts, then
that needs to become part of the interfaces listed in linux/interrupt.h
rather than linux/irq.h.

So what I suggest is this approach instead (against Linus' tree of a
couple of days ago) - we move irq_set_affinity() and irq_can_set_affinity()
to linux/interrupt.h, change the linux/irq.h includes to linux/interrupt.h
and include asm/irq_regs.h where needed (asm/irq_regs.h is supposed to be
rarely used include since not much touches the stacked parent context
registers.)

Build tested on ARM PXA family kernels and ARM's Realview platform
kernels which both use genirq.

Roman Zippel 10a398d04c time: remove obsolete CLOCK_TICK_ADJUST
The first version of the ntp_interval/tick_length inconsistent usage patch was
recently merged as bbe4d18ac2

http://git.kernel.org/gitweb.cgi?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commit;h=bbe4d18ac2e058c56adb0cd71f49d9ed3216a405

While the fix did greatly improve the situation, it was correctly pointed out
by Roman that it does have a small bug: If the users change clocksources after
the system has been running and NTP has made corrections, the correctoins made
against the old clocksource will be applied against the new clocksource,
causing error.

The second attempt, which corrects the issue in the NTP_INTERVAL_LENGTH
definition has also made it up-stream as commit
e13a2e61dd

http://git.kernel.org/gitweb.cgi?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commit;h=e13a2e61dd5152f5499d2003470acf9c838eab84

Roman has correctly pointed out that CLOCK_TICK_ADJUST is calculated
based on the PIT's frequency, and isn't really relevant to non-PIT
driven clocksources (that is, clocksources other then jiffies and pit).

This patch reverts both of those changes, and simply removes
CLOCK_TICK_ADJUST.

This does remove the granularity error correction for users of PIT and Jiffies
clocksource users, but the granularity error but for the majority of users, it
should be within the 500ppm range NTP can accommodate for.

For systems that have granularity errors greater then 500ppm, the
"ntp_tick_adj=" boot option can be used to compensate.

Miao Xie 5e2cb1018a time: fix sysfs_show_{available,current}_clocksources() buffer overflow problem
I found that there is a buffer overflow problem in the following code.

Version:	2.6.24-rc2,
File:		kernel/time/clocksource.c:417-432
--------------------------------------------------------------------
static ssize_t
sysfs_show_available_clocksources(struct sys_device *dev, char *buf)
{
	struct clocksource *src;
	char *curr = buf;

	spin_lock_irq(&clocksource_lock);
	list_for_each_entry(src, &clocksource_list, list) {
		curr += sprintf(curr, "%s ", src->name);
	}
	spin_unlock_irq(&clocksource_lock);

	curr += sprintf(curr, "\n");

	return curr - buf;
}
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

sysfs_show_current_clocksources() also has the same problem though in practice
the size of current clocksource's name won't exceed PAGE_SIZE.

I fix the bug by using snprintf according to the specification of the kernel

Venki Pallipadi 6378ddb592 time: track accurate idle time with tick_sched.idle_sleeptime
Current idle time in kstat is based on jiffies and is coarse grained.
tick_sched.idle_sleeptime is making some attempt to keep track of idle time
in a fine grained manner. But, it is not handling the time spent in
interrupts fully.

Make tick_sched.idle_sleeptime accurate with respect to time spent on
handling interrupts and also add tick_sched.idle_lastupdate, which keeps
track of last time when idle_sleeptime was updated.

This statistics will be crucial for cpufreq-ondemand governor, which can
shed some conservative gaurd band that is uses today while setting the
frequency. The ondemand changes that uses the exact idle time is coming
soon.

john stultz bbe4d18ac2 NTP: correct inconsistent ntp interval/tick_length usage
I recently noticed on one of my boxes that when synched with an NTP
server, the drift value reported for the system was ~283ppm. While in
some cases, clock hardware can be that bad, it struck me as unusual as
the system was using the acpi_pm clocksource, which is one of the more
trustworthy and accurate clocksources on x86 hardware.

I brought up another system and let it sync to the same NTP server, and
I noticed a similar 280some ppm drift.

In looking at the code, I found that the acpi_pm's constant frequency
was being computed correctly at boot-up, however once the system was up,
even without the ntp daemon running, the clocksource's frequency was
being modified by the clocksource_adjust() function.

Digging deeper, I realized that in the code that keeps track of how much
the clocksource is skewing from the ntp desired time, we were using
different lengths to establish how long an time interval was.

The clocksource was being setup with the following interval:
	NTP_INTERVAL_LENGTH = NSEC_PER_SEC/NTP_INTERVAL_FREQ

While the ntp code was using the tick_length_base value:
	tick_length_base ~= (tick_usec * NSEC_PER_USEC * USER_HZ)
					/NTP_INTERVAL_FREQ

The subtle difference is:
	(tick_usec * NSEC_PER_USEC * USER_HZ) != NSEC_PER_SEC

This difference in calculation was causing the clocksource correction
code to apply a correction factor to the clocksource so the two
intervals were the same, however this results in the actual frequency of
the clocksource to be made incorrect. I believe this difference would
affect all clocksources, although to differing degrees depending on the
clocksource resolution.

The issue was introduced when my HZ free ntp patch landed in 2.6.21-rc1,
so my apologies for the mistake, and for not noticing it until now.

The following patch, corrects the clocksource's initialization code so
it uses the same interval length as the code in ntp.c. After applying
this patch, the drift value for the same system went from ~283ppm to
only 2.635ppm.

I believe this patch to be good, however it does affect all arches and
I've only tested on x86, so some caution is advised. I do think it would
be a likely candidate for a stable 2.6.24.x release.

Any thoughts or feedback would be appreciated.

Thomas Gleixner cdc6f27d9e clockevents: fix reprogramming decision in oneshot broadcast
Resolve the following regression of a choppy, almost unusable laptop:

 http://lkml.org/lkml/2007/12/7/299
 http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9525

A previous version of the code did the reprogramming of the broadcast
device in the return from idle code. This was removed, but the logic in
tick_handle_oneshot_broadcast() was kept the same.

When a broadcast interrupt happens we signal the expiry to all CPUs
which have an expired event. If none of the CPUs has an expired event,
which can happen in dyntick mode, then we reprogram the broadcast
device. We do not reprogram otherwise, but this is only correct if all
CPUs, which are in the idle broadcast state have been woken up.

The code ignores, that there might be pending not yet expired events on
other CPUs, which are in the idle broadcast state. So the delivery of
those events can be delayed for quite a time.

Change the tick_handle_oneshot_broadcast() function to check for CPUs,
which are in broadcast state and are not woken up by the current event,
and enforce the rearming of the broadcast device for those CPUs.

David P. Reed fa6a1a554b ntp: fix typo that makes sync_cmos_clock erratic
Fix a typo in ntp.c that has caused updating of the persistent (RTC)
clock when synced to NTP to behave erratically.

When debugging a freeze that arises on my AMD64 machines when I
run the ntpd service, I added a number of printk's to monitor the
sync_cmos_clock procedure. I discovered that it was not syncing to
cmos RTC every 11 minutes as documented, but instead would keep trying
every second for hours at a time. The reason turned out to be a typo
in sync_cmos_clock, where it attempts to ensure that
update_persistent_clock is called very close to 500 msec. after a 1
second boundary (required by the PC RTC's spec). That typo referred to
"xtime" in one spot, rather than "now", which is derived from "xtime"
but not equal to it. This makes the test erratic, creating a
"coin-flip" that decides when update_persistent_clock is called - when
it is called, which is rarely, it may be at any time during the one
second period, rather than close to 500 msec, so the value written is
needlessly incorrect, too.

john stultz b2d9323d13 Use num_possible_cpus() instead of NR_CPUS for timer distribution
To avoid lock contention, we distribute the sched_timer calls across the
cpus so they do not trigger at the same instant. However, I used NR_CPUS,
which can cause needless grouping on small smp systems depending on your
kernel config. This patch converts to using num_possible_cpus() so we
spread it as evenly as possible on every machine.

Briefly tested w/ NR_CPUS=255 and verified reduced contention.

Ingo Molnar f20bf61256 time: introduce xtime_seconds
improve performance of sys_time(). sys_time() returns time in seconds,
but it does so by calling do_gettimeofday() and then returning the
tv_sec portion of the GTOD time. But the data structure "xtime", which
is updated by every timer/scheduler tick, already offers HZ granularity
time.

the patch improves the sysbench oltp macrobenchmark by 4-5% on an AMD
dual-core system:

Thomas Gleixner 1595f452f3 clockevents: introduce force broadcast notifier
The 64bit SMP bootup is slightly different to the 32bit one. It enables
the boot CPU local APIC timer before all CPUs are brought up. Some AMD C1E
systems have the C1E feature flag only set in the secondary CPU. Due to
the early enable of the boot CPU local APIC timer the APIC timer is
registered as a fully functional device. When we detect the wreckage during
the bringup of the secondary CPU, we need to force the boot CPU into
broadcast mode.

Add a new notifier reason and implement the force broadcast in the clock
events layer.

    CPUIDLE: handle BM detection inside the ACPI Processor driver

    Update the ACPI processor driver to detect BM activity and
    limit state entry depth internally, rather than exposing such

    cpuidle: re-write

    Some portions have been rewritten to make the code cleaner and lighter
    weight. The following is a list of changes:

    1.) the state name is now included in the sysfs interface
    2.) detection, hotplug, and available state modifications are handled by
    CPUIDLE drivers directly
    3.) the CPUIDLE idle handler is only ever installed when at least one
    cpuidle_device is enabled and ready
    4.) the menu governor BM code no longer overflows
    5.) the sysfs attributes are now printed as unsigned integers, avoiding
    negative values
    6.) a variety of other small cleanups

    Also, Idle drivers are no longer swappable during runtime through the
    CPUIDLE sysfs inteface. On i386 and x86_64 most idle handlers (e.g.
    poll, mwait, halt, etc.) don't benefit from an infrastructure that
    supports multiple states, so I think using a more general case idle
    handler selection mechanism would be cleaner.

    We only look at early breakouts that result in wakeups shorter than idle
    state's target_residency. If such a breakout is frequent enough, eliminate
    the particular idle state upto a timeout period.

    cpuidle: add the 'menu' governor

    Here is my first take at implementing an idle PM governor that takes
    full advantage of NO_HZ. I call it the 'menu' governor because it
    considers the full list of idle states before each entry.

    I've kept the implementation fairly simple. It attempts to guess the
    next residency time and then chooses a state that would meet at least
    the break-even point between power savings and entry cost. To this end,
    it selects the deepest idle state that satisfies the following
    constraints:
         1. If the idle time elapsed since bus master activity was detected
            is below a threshold (currently 20 ms), then limit the selection
            to C2-type or above.
         2. Do not choose a state with a break-even residency that exceeds
            the expected time remaining until the next timer interrupt.
         3. Do not choose a state with a break-even residency that exceeds
            the elapsed time between the last pair of break events,
            excluding timer interrupts.

    This governor has an advantage over "ladder" governor because it
    proactively checks how much time remains until the next timer interrupt
    using the tick infrastructure. Also, it handles device interrupt
    activity more intelligently by not including timer interrupts in break
    event calculations. Finally, it doesn't make policy decisions using the
    number of state entries, which can have variable residency times (NO_HZ
    makes these potentially very large), and instead only considers sleep
    time deltas.

    The menu governor can be selected during runtime using the cpuidle sysfs
    interface like so:
    "echo "menu" > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpuidle/current_governor"

    cpuidle: hang fix

    x86-64 expects all idle handlers to enable interrupts before returning from

    cpuidle_idle_call() confirm to this when there is no pm_idle_old.

    cpuidle take2: Core cpuidle infrastructure

    Announcing 'cpuidle', a new CPU power management infrastructure to manage
    idle CPUs in a clean and efficient manner.
    cpuidle separates out the drivers that can provide support for multiple types
    of idle states and policy governors that decide on what idle state to use
    at run time.
    A cpuidle driver can support multiple idle states based on parameters like
    varying power consumption, wakeup latency, etc (ACPI C-states for example).
    A cpuidle governor can be usage model specific (laptop, server,
    laptop on battery etc).
    Main advantage of the infrastructure being, it allows independent development
    of drivers and governors and allows for better CPU power management.

    A huge thanks to Adam Belay and Shaohua Li who were part of this mini-project
    since its beginning and are greatly responsible for this patchset.

    This patch:

    Core cpuidle infrastructure.
    Introduces a new abstraction layer for cpuidle:
    * which manages drivers that can support multiple idles states. Drivers
      can be generic or particular to specific hardware/platform
    * allows pluging in multiple policy governors that can take idle state policy
      decision
    * The core also has a set of sysfs interfaces with which administrato can know
      about supported drivers and governors and switch them at run time.

Thomas Gleixner b7e113dc9d clockevents: remove the suspend/resume workaround^Wthinko
In a desparate attempt to fix the suspend/resume problem on Andrews
VAIO I added a workaround which enforced the broadcast of the oneshot
timer on resume. This was actually resolving the problem on the VAIO
but was just a stupid workaround, which was not tackling the root
cause: the assignement of lower idle C-States in the ACPI processor_idle
code. The cpuidle patches, which utilize the dynamic tick feature and
go faster into deeper C-states exposed the problem again. The correct
solution is the previous patch, which prevents lower C-states across
the suspend/resume.

Remove the enforcement code, including the conditional broadcast timer
arming, which helped to pamper over the real problem for quite a time.
The oneshot broadcast flag for the cpu, which runs the resume code can
never be set at the time when this code is executed. It only gets set,
when the CPU is entering a lower idle C-State.

Thomas Gleixner 5e41d0d60a clockevents: prevent stale tick update on offline cpu
Taking a cpu offline removes the cpu from the online mask before the
CPU_DEAD notification is done. The clock events layer does the cleanup
of the dead CPU from the CPU_DEAD notifier chain. tick_do_timer_cpu is
used to avoid xtime lock contention by assigning the task of jiffies
xtime updates to one CPU. If a CPU is taken offline, then this
assignment becomes stale. This went unnoticed because most of the time
the offline CPU went dead before the online CPU reached __cpu_die(),
where the CPU_DEAD state is checked. In the case that the offline CPU did
not reach the DEAD state before we reach __cpu_die(), the code in there
goes to sleep for 100ms. Due to the stale time update assignment, the
system is stuck forever.

Take the assignment away when a cpu is not longer in the cpu_online_mask.
We do this in the last call to tick_nohz_stop_sched_tick() when the offline
CPU is on the way to the final play_dead() idle entry.

Thomas Gleixner 6a669ee8a7 timekeeping: Prevent time going backwards on resume
Timekeeping resume adjusts xtime by adding the slept time in seconds and
resets the reference value of the clock source (clock->cycle_last).
clock->cycle last is used to calculate the delta between the last xtime
update and the readout of the clock source in __get_nsec_offset(). xtime
plus the offset is the current time. The resume code ignores the delta
which had already elapsed between the last xtime update and the actual
time of suspend. If the suspend time is short, then we can see time
going backwards on resume.

Suspend:
offs_s = clock->read() - clock->cycle_last;
now = xtime + offs_s;
timekeeping_suspend_time = read_rtc();

Resume:
sleep_time = read_rtc() - timekeeping_suspend_time;
xtime.tv_sec += sleep_time;
clock->cycle_last = clock->read();
offs_r = clock->read() - clock->cycle_last;
now = xtime + offs_r;

if sleep_time_seconds == 0 and offs_r < offs_s, then time goes
backwards.

Fix this by storing the offset from the last xtime update and add it to
xtime during resume, when we reset clock->cycle_last:

sleep_time = read_rtc() - timekeeping_suspend_time;
xtime.tv_sec += sleep_time;
xtime += offs_s;	/* Fixup xtime offset at suspend time */
clock->cycle_last = clock->read();
offs_r = clock->read() - clock->cycle_last;
now = xtime + offs_r;

Thanks to Marcelo for tracking this down on the OLPC and providing the
necessary details to analyze the root cause.

john stultz 17c38b7490 Cache xtime every call to update_wall_time
This avoids xtime lag seen with dynticks, because while 'xtime' itself
is still not updated often, we keep a 'xtime_cache' variable around that
contains the approximate real-time that _is_ updated each time we do a
'update_wall_time()', and is thus never off by more than one tick.

IOW, this restores the original semantics for 'xtime' users, as long as
you use the proper abstraction functions (ie 'current_kernel_time()' or
'get_seconds()' depending on whether you want a timespec or just the
seconds field).

[ Updated Patch. As penance for my sins I've also yanked another #ifdef
  that was added to avoid the xtime lag w/ hrtimers. ]

john stultz 2c6b47de17 Cleanup non-arch xtime uses, use get_seconds() or current_kernel_time().
This avoids use of the kernel-internal "xtime" variable directly outside
of the actual time-related functions. Instead, use the helper functions
that we already have available to us.

This doesn't actually change any behaviour, but this will allow us to
fix the fact that "xtime" isn't updated very often with CONFIG_NO_HZ
(because much of the realtime information is maintained as separate
offsets to 'xtime'), which has caused interfaces that use xtime directly
to get a time that is out of sync with the real-time clock by up to a
third of a second or so.

KSYM_NAME_LEN is peculiar in that it does not include the space for the

Thomas Gleixner 746976a301 NTP: remove clock_was_set() call to prevent deadlock
The clock_was_set() call in seconds_overflow() which happens only when
leap seconds are inserted / deleted is wrong in two aspects:

1. it results in a call to on_each_cpu() with interrupts disabled
2. it is potential deadlock source vs. call_lock in smp_call_function()

The only possible side effect of the removal might be, that an absolute
CLOCK_REALTIME timer fires 1 second too late, in the rare case of leap
second deletion and an absolute CLOCK_REALTIME timer which expires in
the affected time frame. It will never fire too early.

Thomas Gleixner eaad084bb0 NOHZ: prevent multiplication overflow - stop timer for huge timeouts
get_next_timer_interrupt() returns a delta of (LONG_MAX > 1) in case
there is no timer pending. On 64 bit machines this results in a
multiplication overflow in tick_nohz_stop_sched_tick().

Reported by: Dave Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

Make the return value a constant and limit the return value to a 32 bit
value.

When the max timeout value is returned, we can safely stop the tick
timer device. The max jiffies delta results in a 12 days timeout for
HZ=1000.

In the long term the get_next_timer_interrupt() code needs to be
reworked to return ktime instead of jiffies, but we have to wait until
the last users of the original NO_IDLE_HZ code are converted.

Alexey Dobriyan e8edc6e03a Detach sched.h from mm.h
First thing mm.h does is including sched.h solely for can_do_mlock() inline
function which has "current" dereference inside. By dealing with can_do_mlock()
mm.h can be detached from sched.h which is good. See below, why.

This patch
a) removes unconditional inclusion of sched.h from mm.h
b) makes can_do_mlock() normal function in mm/mlock.c
c) exports can_do_mlock() to not break compilation
d) adds sched.h inclusions back to files that were getting it indirectly.
e) adds less bloated headers to some files (asm/signal.h, jiffies.h) that were
   getting them indirectly

Net result is:
a) mm.h users would get less code to open, read, preprocess, parse, ... if
   they don't need sched.h
b) sched.h stops being dependency for significant number of files:
   on x86_64 allmodconfig touching sched.h results in recompile of 4083 files,
   after patch it's only 3744 (-8.3%).

Siddha, Suresh B 46cb4b7c88 sched: dynticks idle load balancing
Fix the process idle load balancing in the presence of dynticks. cpus for
which ticks are stopped will sleep till the next event wakes it up.
Potentially these sleeps can be for large durations and during which today,
there is no periodic idle load balancing being done.

This patch nominates an owner among the idle cpus, which does the idle load
balancing on behalf of the other idle cpus. And once all the cpus are
completely idle, then we can stop this idle load balancing too. Checks added
in fast path are minimized. Whenever there are busy cpus in the system, there
will be an owner(idle cpu) doing the system wide idle load balancing.

Thomas Gleixner d3ed782458 highres/dyntick: prevent xtime lock contention
While the !highres/!dyntick code assigns the duty of the do_timer() call to
one specific CPU, this was dropped in the highres/dyntick part during
development.

Steven Rostedt discovered the xtime lock contention on highres/dyntick due
to several CPUs trying to update jiffies.

Add the single CPU assignement back. In the dyntick case this needs to be
handled carefully, as the CPU which has the do_timer() duty must drop the
assignement and let it be grabbed by another CPU, which is active.
Otherwise the do_timer() calls would not happen during the long sleep.

john stultz 98de9e3ba2 [PATCH] fix jiffies clocksource inittime
In debugging a problem w/ the -rt tree, I noticed that on systems that mark
the tsc as unstable before it is registered, the TSC would still be
selected and used for a short period of time. Digging in it looks to be a
result of the mix of the clocksource list changes and my clocksource
initialization changes.

With the -rt tree, using a bad TSC, even for a short period of time can
results in a hang at boot. I was not able to reproduce this hang w/
mainline, but I'm not completely certain that someone won't trip on it.

This patch resolves the issue by initializing the jiffies clocksource
earlier so a bad TSC won't get selected just because nothing else is yet
registered.

The watchdog implementation excludes low res / non continuous
clocksources from being selected as a watchdog reference
unintentionally.

Allow using jiffies/PIT as a watchdog reference as long as no better
clocksource is available. This is necessary to detect TSC breakage on
systems, which have no pmtimer/hpet.

The main goal of the initial patch (preventing to switch to highres/nohz
when no reliable fallback clocksource is available) is still guaranteed
by the checks in clocksource_watchdog().

Thomas Gleixner cd05a1f818 [PATCH] clockevents: Fix suspend/resume to disk hangs
I finally found a dual core box, which survives suspend/resume without
crashing in the middle of nowhere. Sigh, I never figured out from the
code and the bug reports what's going on.

The observed hangs are caused by a stale state transition of the clock
event devices, which keeps the RCU synchronization away from completion,
when the non boot CPU is brought back up.

The suspend/resume in oneshot mode needs the similar care as the
periodic mode during suspend to RAM. My assumption that the state
transitions during the different shutdown/bringups of s2disk would go
through the periodic boot phase and then switch over to highres resp.
nohz mode were simply wrong.

Add the appropriate suspend / resume handling for the non periodic
modes.

Thomas Gleixner 6321dd60c7 [PATCH] Save/restore periodic tick information over suspend/resume
The programming of periodic tick devices needs to be saved/restored
across suspend/resume - otherwise we might end up with a system coming
up that relies on getting a PIT (or HPET) interrupt, while those devices
default to 'no interrupts' after powerup. (To confuse things it worked
to a certain degree on some systems because the lapic gets initialized
as a side-effect of SMP bootup.)

This suspend / resume thing was dropped unintentionally during the

john stultz 6bb74df481 [PATCH] clocksource init adjustments (fix bug #7426)
This patch resolves the issue found here:
http://bugme.osdl.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7426

The basic summary is:
Currently we register most of i386/x86_64 clocksources at module_init
time. Then we enable clocksource selection at late_initcall time. This
causes some problems for drivers that use gettimeofday for init
calibration routines (specifically the es1968 driver in this case),
where durring module_init, the only clocksource available is the low-res
jiffies clocksource. This may cause slight calibration errors, due to
the small sampling time used.

It should be noted that drivers that require fine grained time may not
function on architectures that do not have better then jiffies
resolution timekeeping (there are a few). However, this does not
discount the reasonable need for such fine-grained timekeeping at init
time.

Thus the solution here is to register clocksources earlier (ideally when
the hardware is being initialized), and then we enable clocksource
selection at fs_initcall (before device_initcall).

This patch should probably get some testing time in -mm, since
clocksource selection is one of the most important issues for correct
timekeeping, and I've only been able to test this on a few of my own
boxes.

Users of the clockevents core can get clock event devices for their use. The

This allows to control the clock event devices without the architectures
having to worry about the details of function assignment. This is also a
preliminary for high resolution timers and dynamic ticks to allow the core
code to control the clock functionality without intrusive changes to the

Mathieu Desnoyers dc29a3657b [PATCH] kernel/time/clocksource.c needs struct task_struct on m68k
kernel/time/clocksource.c needs struct task_struct on m68k.

Because it uses spin_unlock_irq(), which, on m68k, uses hardirq_count(), which
uses preempt_count(), which needs to dereference struct task_struct, we
have to include sched.h. Because it would cause a loop inclusion, we
cannot include sched.h in any other of asm-m68k/system.h,
linux/thread_info.h, linux/hardirq.h, which leaves this ugly include in
a C file as the only simple solution.

john stultz 3f4a0b917c [PATCH] i386 Time: Avoid PIT SMP lockups
Avoid possible PIT livelock issues seen on SMP systems (and reported by
Andi), by not allowing it as a clocksource on SMP boxes.

However, since the PIT may no longer be present, we have to properly handle
the cases where SMP systems have TSC skew and fall back from the TSC.
Since the PIT isn't there, it would "fall back" to the TSC again. So this
changes the jiffies rating to 1, and the TSC-bad rating value to 0.

Thus you will get the following behavior priority on i386 systems:

tsc		[if present & stable]
hpet		[if present]
cyclone		[if present]
acpi_pm		[if present]
pit		[if UP]
jiffies

Rather then the current more complicated:
tsc		[if present & stable]
hpet		[if present]
cyclone		[if present]
acpi_pm		[if present]
pit		[if cpus < 4]
tsc		[if present & unstable]
jiffies

Roman Zippel f199239373 [PATCH] ntp: convert to the NTP4 reference model
This converts the kernel ntp model into a model which matches the nanokernel
reference implementations. The previous patches already increased the
resolution and precision of the computations, so that this conversion becomes
quite simple.

<linux@horizon.com> explains:

The original NTP kernel interface was defined in units of microseconds.
That's what Linux implements. As computers have gotten faster and can now
split microseconds easily, a new kernel interface using nanosecond units was
defined ("the nanokernel", confusing as that name is to OS hackers), and
there's an STA_NANO bit in the adjtimex() status field to tell the application
which units it's using.

The current ntpd supports both, but Linux loses some possible timing
resolution because of quantization effects, and the ntpd hackers would really
like to be able to drop the backwards compatibility code.

Ulrich Windl has been maintaining a patch set to do the conversion for years,
but it's hard to keep in sync.

john stultz 734efb467b [PATCH] Time: Clocksource Infrastructure
This introduces the clocksource management infrastructure. A clocksource is a
driver-like architecture generic abstraction of a free-running counter. This
code defines the clocksource structure, and provides management code for
registering, selecting, accessing and scaling clocksources.

Additionally, this includes the trivial jiffies clocksource, a lowest common
denominator clocksource, provided mainly for use as an example.
