ACPICA commit e4743959b59ad93eab7310adf756adc930be0ddb
This reverts commit 8e7a8753827660c3dd1f571f3185610402b756f0.
The _SUB method was found to be problematic for this interface
because some implementations use control methods. Therefore,
it is being removed.
Operations cannot be used because this interface is called
during the device discovery scan and the region handlers are
not fully installed at that time.

ACPICA commit 11522d6b894054fc4d62dd4f9863ec151296b386
The ACPI_DEBUGGER_EXEC is a problem now when the debugger code is compiled
but runtime disabled. They actually will get executed in this situation.
Although such executions are harmless if we can correctly make
acpi_db_single_step() a runtime stub, users may still do not want to see the
debugger print messages logged into OSPMs' kernel logs when a debugger
driver is not loaded to enable the debugger during runtime.
This patch fixes this issue by introducing new stub mechanism instead of
ACPI_DEBUGGER_EXEC. Lv Zheng.

The following mechanisms are OSPM specific:
1. Redirect output destination to console: no file redirection will be
needed by an in-kernel debugger, there is even no file can be accessed
when the debugger is running in the kernel mode.
2. Output command prompts: programs other than acpiexec can have different
prompt characters and the prompt characters may be implemented as a
special character sequence to form a char device IO protocol.
3. Command ready/complete handshake: OSPM debugger may wait more conditions
to implement OSPM specific semantics (for example, FIFO full/empty
conditions for O_NONBLOCK or IO open/close conditions).
Leaving such OSPM specific stuffs in the ACPICA debugger core blocks
Linux debugger IO driver implementation.
Several new OSL APIs are provided by this patch:
1. acpi_os_initialize_command_signals: initialize command handshake mechanism
or any other OSPM specific stuffs.
2. acpi_os_terminate_command_signals: reversal of
acpi_os_initialize_command_signals.
3. acpi_os_wait_command_ready: putting debugger task into wait state when a
command is not ready. OSPMs can terminate command loop by returning
AE_CTRL_TERMINATE from this API. Normally, wait_event() or
wait_for_multiple_object() may be used to implement this API.
4. acpi_os_notify_command_complete: putting user task into running state when a
command has been completed. OSPMs can terminate command loop by
returning AE_CTRL_TERMINATE from this API. Normally, wake_up() or
set_event() may be used to implement this API.
This patch also converts current command signaling implementation into a
generic debugger layer (osgendbg.c) to be used by the existing OSPMs or
acpiexec, in return, Linux can have chance to implement its own command
handshake mechanism. This patch also implements acpiexec batch mode in a
multi-threading mode comaptible style as a demo (this can be confirmed by
configuring acpiexec into DEBUGGER_MULTI_THREADED mode where the batch mode
is still working). Lv Zheng.
Note that the OSPM specific command handshake mechanism is required by
Linux kernel because:
1. Linux kernel trends to use wait queue to synchronize two threads, using
mutexes to achieve that will cause false "dead lock" warnings.
2. The command handshake mechanism implemented by ACPICA is implemented in
this way because of a design issue in debugger IO streaming. Debugger IO
outputs are simply cached using a giant buffer, this should be tuned by
Linux in the future.

This patch enables ACPICA debugger files using a configurable
CONFIG_ACPI_DEBUGGER configuration item. Those debugger related code that
was originally masked as ACPI_FUTURE_USAGE now gets unmasked.
Necessary OSL stubs are also added in this patch:
1. acpi_os_readable(): This should be arch specific in Linux, while this
patch doesn't introduce real implementation and a complex mechanism to
allow architecture specific acpi_os_readable() to be implemented to
validate the address. It may be done by future commits.
2. acpi_os_get_line(): This is used to obtain debugger command input. This
patch only introduces a simple KDB concept example in it and the
example should be co-working with the code implemented in
acpi_os_printf(). Since this KDB example won't be compiled unless
ENABLE_DEBUGGER is defined and it seems Linux has already stopped to
use ENABLE_DEBUGGER, thus do not expect it can work properly.
This patch also cleans up all other ACPI_FUTURE_USAGE surroundings
accordingly.
1. Since linkage error can be automatically detected, declaration in the
headers needn't be surrounded by ACPI_FUTURE_USAGE.
So only the following separate exported fuction bodies are masked by
this macro (other exported fucntions may have already been masked at
entire module level via drivers/acpi/acpica/Makefile):
acpi_install_exception_handler()
acpi_subsystem_status()
acpi_get_system_info()
acpi_get_statistics()
acpi_install_initialization_handler()
2. Since strip can automatically zap the no-user functions, functions that
are not marked with ACPI_EXPORT_SYMBOL() needn't get surrounded by
ACPI_FUTURE_USAGE.
So the following function which is not used by Linux kernel now won't
get surrounded by this macro:
acpi_ps_get_name()

When the debugger is running in the kernel mode, acpi_db_single_step() may
also be invoked by the kernel runtime code path but the single stepping
command prompt may be erronously logged as the kernel logs and runtime code
path cannot proceed.
This patch fixes this issue by adding acpi_gbl_db_thread_id for the debugger
thread and preventing acpi_db_single_step() to be invoked from other threads.
It is not suitable to add acpi_thread_id parameter for acpi_os_execute() as
the function may be implemented as work queue on some hosts. So it is
better to let the hosts invoke acpi_set_debugger_thread_id(). Currently
acpiexec is not configured as DEBUGGER_MULTI_THREADED, but we can do this.
When we do this, it is better to invoke acpi_set_debugger_thread_id() in
acpi_os_execute() when the execution type is OSL_DEBUGGER_MAIN_THREAD. The
support should look like:
create_thread(&tid);
if (type == OSL_DEBUGGER_MAIN_THREAD)
acpi_set_debugger_thread_id(tid);
resume_thread(tid);
Similarly, semop() may be used for pthread implementation. But this patch
simply skips debugger thread ID check for application instead of
introducing such complications as there is no need to skip
acpi_db_single_step() for an application debugger - acpiexec.
Note that the debugger thread ID can also be used by acpi_os_printf() to
filter out debugger output. Lv Zheng.

The quit/exit commands shouldn't invoke acpi_terminate_debugger() and
acpi_terminate() right in the user command loop, because when the debugger
exits, the kernel ACPI subsystem shouldn't be terminated (acpi_terminate())
and the debugger should only be terminated by its users
(acpi_terminate_debugger()) rather than being terminated itself. Leaving such
invocations causes kernel panic when the debugger is shipped in the Linux
kernel.

Some logics actually relying on the existence of FADT, currently relies on
the number of loaded tables. This false dependency can easily trigger
regressions. One of them has been introduced by commit 8ec3f45907

The commit changing the fixed table indexes results in the change of FADT
table index, originally, it was 3 (thus the installed table count should be

be 3).

ACPICA commit 42d7ad7bfb1cfb95183c1386c77509f2036f521d
When acpi_gbl_db_opt_verbose is used in acpi_dm_descending_op() (invoked by
acpi_dm_disassemble()), it is actually exported by the disassembler but used
by the debugger to distinguish the output of the disassembler for different
debugger commands. It is by default TRUE but is set to FALSE for control
method disassembly command - "disassemble". So it's initialization should
be a part of the ACPI_DISASSEMBLER conditioned code. This patch uses
ACPI_INIT_GLOBAL to achieve a clean manner so that when ACPI_DISASSEMBLER
is not defined, ACPI_DEBUGGER conditioned code needn't link to this option.
Since it is a disassembler exported variable, it is renamed to
acpi_gbl_dm_opt_Verbose in this patch.

ACPICA commit c0b38b4c3982c2336ee92a2a14716107248bd941
The fixed table indexes leave holes in the global table list:
1. One hole can be seen when there is only 1 FACS provided by the BIOS.
2. Tow holes can be seen when it is a reduced hardware platform.
The holes do not break OSPMs but have broken ACPI debugger "tables"
command.
Also the "fixed table indexes" mechanism may make the descriptors of the
standard tables installed earlier than DSDT to be overwritten by the
descriptors of the fixed tables. For example, FACP disappears from the
global table list after DSDT is installed.
This patch fixes all above issues by removing the "fixed table indexes"
mechanism which is too complicated to be maintained in a regression safe
manner. After removal, the table loader will determine the indexes of the
fixed tables. Lv Zheng.

ACPICA commit 07fffd02607685b655ed92ee15c160e6a810b60b
The acpi_debug_trace() is the mechanism known as ACPI method tracing that is
used by Linux as ACPICA debugging message reducer. This facility can be
controlled through Linux ACPI subsystem - /sys/module/acpi/parameters.
This facility requires CONFIG_ACPI_DEBUG to be enabled to see ACPICA trace
logs in the kernel dmesg output.
This patch enhances acpi_debug_trace() to make it not only a message reducer,
but a real tracer to trace AML interpreter execution. Note that in addition
to the AML tracer enabling, this patch also updates the facility with the
following enhancements:
1. Allow a full path to be specified by the acpi_debug_trace() API.
2. Allow any method rather than just the entrance of acpi_evaluate_object()
to be traced.
3. All interpreter ACPI_LV_TRACE_POINT messages are collected for
ACPI_EXECUTER layer.
The Makefile of drivers/acpi/acpica is also updated to include exdebug.o
and the duplicated stubs are removed after that.
Note that since this patch has enhanced the method tracing facility, Linux
need also be updated after applying this patch. Lv Zheng.

ACPICA commit afb52611dbe7403551f93504d3798534f5c343f4
This patch cleans up the code of assigning the AML address to the
union acpi_operand_object.
The idea behind this cleanup is:
The AML address of the union acpi_operand_object should always be determined at
the point where the object is encountered. It should be started from the
first byte of the object. For example, the opcode of the object, the name
string of the user_term object, or the first byte of the packaged object
(where a pkg_length is prefixed). So it's not cleaner to have it assigned
here and there in the entire ACPICA source tree.
There are some special cases for the internal opcodes, before cleaning up
the internal opcodes, we should also determine the rules for the AML
addresses of the internal opcodes:
1. INT_NAMEPATH_OP: the address of the first byte for the name_string.
2. INT_METHODCALL_OP: the address of the first byte for the name_string.
3. INT_BYTELIST_OP: the address of the first byte for the byte_data list.
4. INT_EVAL_SUBTREE_OP: the address of the first byte for the
Region/Package/Buffer/bank_field/Field arguments.
5. INT_NAMEDFIELD_OP: the address to the name_seg.
6. INT_RESERVEDFIELD_OP: the address to the 0x00 prefix.
7. INT_ACCESSFIELD_OP: the address to the 0x01 prefix.
8. INT_CONNECTION_OP: the address to the 0x02 prefix.
9: INT_EXTACCESSFIELD_OP: the address to the 0x03 prefix.
10.INT_RETURN_VALUE_OP: the address of the replaced operand.
11.computational_data: the address to the
Byte/Word/Dword/Qword/string_prefix.
Before cleaning up the internal root scope of the aml_walk, turning it into
the term_list, we need to remember the aml_start address as the "Aml"
attribute for the union acpi_operand_object created by acpi_ps_create_scope_op().
Finally, we can delete some redundant AML address assignment in psloop.c.

ACPICA commit 61b360074fde2bb8282722579410f5d1fb12f84d
This patch converts aml_offset in union acpi_operand_object to AML address.
AML offset is actually only used by the debugger, using AML address is more
direct and efficient during the parsing stage so that we don't need to
calculate the offset during the parsing stage and will not have
difficulities in converting it into other offset attributes.
Sometimes, aml_offset is not an indication of the offset from the table
header but the offset from the entry of a list of terms, which requires
additional efforts to convert it into an offset from the table header. By
using AML address directly, there is no such difficulty.
Thus this patch also deletes a logic in disassembler that is trying to
convert the aml_offset from
"offset from the start address of Method/Package/Buffer"
into the
"offset from the start address of the ACPI table"
(Sample code deletion can be seen in acpi_dm_deferred_parse(), but the
function is not in the Linux kernel). Lv Zheng.

ACPICA commit d254405814495058276c0c2f9d96794d15a6c91c
This patch converts aml_offset in struct acpi_walk_state to AML address.
AML offset is actually only used by the debugger, using AML address is more
direct and efficient during the parsing stage so that we don't need to
calculate it during the parsing stage.
On the other hand, we can see several issues in the current parser logic
around the aml_offset:
1. union acpi_operand_object.Common.aml_offset is redundantly assigned in
acpi_ps_parse_loop().
2. aml_offset is not an indication of the offset from the table header but
the offset from the entry of a list of objects. Sometimes, it indicates
an entry for a Method/Package/Buffer, which makes it difficult to be
reversely calculated to a table header offset.
3. When being used with method tracers (for example, Linux function trace),
it's better to have AML address logged instead of the AML offset because
the address is the only attribute that can uniquely identify the opcode.
This patch is required to solve the above issues. Lv Zheng.

ACPICA: Add option to favor 32-bit FADT addresses.
The platform reports 2 FACS tables (which is not allowed by ACPI
specification) and the new 32-bit address favor rule forces OSPMs to use
the FACS table reported via FADT's X_FIRMWARE_CTRL field.
The root cause of the reported bug might be one of the followings:
1. BIOS may favor the 64-bit firmware waking vector address when the
version of the FACS is greater than 0 and Linux currently only supports
resuming from the real mode, so the 64-bit firmware waking vector has
never been set and might be invalid to BIOS while the commit enables
higher version FACS.
2. BIOS may favor the FACS reported via the "FIRMWARE_CTRL" field in the
FADT while the commit doesn't set the firmware waking vector address of
the FACS reported by "FIRMWARE_CTRL", it only sets the firware waking
vector address of the FACS reported by "X_FIRMWARE_CTRL".
This patch excludes the cases that can trigger the bugs caused by the root
cause 2.
There is no handshaking mechanism can be used by OSPM to tell BIOS which
FACS is currently used. Thus the FACS reported by "FIRMWARE_CTRL" may still
be used by BIOS and the 0 value of the 32-bit firmware waking vector might
trigger such failure.
This patch enables the firmware waking vectors for both 32bit/64bit FACS
tables in order to ensure we can exclude the cases that trigger the bugs
caused by the root cause 2. The exclusion is split into 2 commits so that
if it turns out not to be necessary, this single commit can be reverted
without affecting the useful one. Lv Zheng, Bob Moore.

The following commit is reported to have broken s2ram on some platforms:
Commit: 0249ed2444

This patch tries to favor 32bit FACS address in another way where both the
FACS reported by "FIRMWARE_CTRL" and the FACS reported by "X_FIRMWARE_CTRL"
are loaded so that further commit can set firmware waking vector in the
both tables to ensure we can exclude the cases that trigger the bugs caused
by the root cause 2. The exclusion is split into 2 commits as this commit
is also useful for dumping more ACPI tables, it won't get reverted when
such exclusion is no longer necessary. Lv Zheng.

ACPICA commit 7aa598d711644ab0de5f70ad88f1e2de253115e4
The following commit is reported to have broken s2ram on some platforms:
Commit: 0249ed2444
This patch excludes the cases that can trigger the bugs caused by the root
cause 1.
ACPI specification says:
A. 32-bit FACS address (FIRMWARE_CTRL field in FADT):
Physical memory address of the FACS, where OSPM and firmware exchange
control information.
If the X_FIRMWARE_CTRL field contains a non zero value then this field
must be zero.
A zero value indicates that no FACS is specified by this field.
B. 64-bit FACS address (X_FIRMWARE_CTRL field in FADT):
64bit physical memory address of the FACS.
This field is used when the physical address of the FACS is above 4GB.
If the FIRMWARE_CTRL field contains a non zero value then this field
must be zero.
A zero value indicates that no FACS is specified by this field.
Thus the 32bit and 64bit firmware waking vector should indicate completely
different resuming environment - real mode (1MB addressable) and non real
mode (4GB+ addressable) and currently Linux only supports resuming from
real mode.
This patch enables 64-bit firmware waking vector for selected FACS via new
acpi_set_firmware_waking_vectors() API so that it's up to OSPMs to
determine which resuming mode should be used by BIOS and ACPICA changes
won't trigger the bugs caused by the root cause 1. Lv Zheng.

ACPICA commit e4f0b73c107680841d7dd01cc04ec108df6580bd
There is code in acpi_hw_build_pci_list() destructing returned object
(return_list_head) before touching it while the allocated new object
(list_head) is not tracked correctly to be destructed on the error case,
which is detected as unsecure code by the "Coverity" tool.
This patch fixes this issue by always intializing the returned object in
acpi_hw_build_pci_list() so that the caller of acpi_hw_build_pci_list() needn't
initialize it and always using the returned object to track the new
allocated objects. Lv Zheng.

It is reported that ACPI interrupts do not work any more on
Dell Latitude D600 after commit c50f13c672 (ACPICA: Save
current masks of enabled GPEs after enable register writes).
The problem turns out to be related to the fact that the
enable_mask and enable_for_run GPE bit masks are not in
sync (in the absence of any system suspend/resume events)
for at least one GPE register on that machine.
Address this problem by writing the enable_for_run mask into
enable_mask as soon as enable_for_run is updated instead of
doing that only after the subsequent register write has
succeeded. For consistency, update acpi_hw_gpe_enable_write()
to store the bit mask to be written into the GPE register
in enable_mask unconditionally before the write.
Since the ACPI_GPE_SAVE_MASK flag is not necessary any more after
that, drop it along with the symbols depending on it.

Windows uses a value of 2, and has no plans to ever change this. So, _REV is
essentially useless for its primary purpose.
Worse, some BIOS vendors have used the difference in _REV values between
Windows and ACPICA to indicate which one is running.
It has been decided by the ACPI community to deprecate this method, and return
1 for ACPI 1.0 (32-bit integers) and 2 for ACPI 2.0 and greater (both 32-bit

ACPICA commit 6eb364d790dd103bd4990f808e0095a421c437cb
acpi_tb_store_table() implements a logic that is only correct to iasl. So it
won't be used by any other utilities except iasl. This function is
complained by the kernel users as an unused function. The best choice to
stop releasing it to the Linux kernel should be moving it to adisasm.c.
ACPI table manager can use both struct acpi_table_desc (direct referencing)
and table index (indirect referencing) as the descriptor to the table, so
acpi_tb_get_next_root_index() is extended to return both of them to allow
maximum usability from the callers. NOTE that indirect referencing is a
design result to meet the boot stage static allocation requirement for the
table descriptors.
This is a linuxized acpi_tb_store_table() removing result, there should be
no functional changes introduced to the Linux kernel by this patch except
the additonal kernel unused argument for acpi_tb_get_next_root_index()
(renamed to acpi_tb_get_next_root_index()). This argument is used in the
ACPICA upstream.

GPE race issues, it is found that the facility is lacking in the ability to
obtain real hardware register values, the confusing information makes
debugging difficult.
This patch modifies acpi_get_gpe_status() to return EN register values to fix
this gap. Then flags returned from acpi_get_event_status() and
acpi_get_gpe_status() are also cleaned up to reflect this change.
The old ACPI_EVENT_FLAG_SET is carefully kept to avoid regressions. It can
be deleted after we can make sure all its references are removed from OSPM
code. Lv Zheng.

ACPICA commit da9a83e1a845f2d7332bdbc0632466b2595e5424
For acpi_set_gpe()/acpi_enable_gpe(), our target is to purify them to be APIs
that can be used for various GPE handling models, so we need them to be
pure GPE enabling APIs. GPE enabling/disabling has 2 use cases:
1. Driver may permanently enable/disable GPEs according to the usage
counts.
1. When upper layers (the users of the driver) submit requests to the
driver, it means they care about the underlying hardware. GPE need
to be enabled for the first request submission and disabled for the
last request completion.
2. When the GPE is shared between 2+ silicon logics. GPE need to be
enabled for either silicon logic's driver and disabled when all of
the drivers are not started.
For these cases, acpi_enable_gpe()/acpi_disable_gpe() should be used. When
the usage count is increased from 0 to 1, the GPE is enabled and it is
disabled when the usage count is decrased from 1 to 0.
2. Driver may temporarily disables the GPE to enter an GPE polling mode and
wants to re-enable it later.
1. Prevent GPE storming: when a driver cannot fully solve the condition
that triggered the GPE in the GPE context, in order not to trigger
GPE storm, driver has to disable GPE to switch into the polling mode
and re-enables it in the non interrupt context after the storming
condition is cleared.
2. Meet throughput requirement: some IO drivers need to poll hardware
again and again until nothing indicated instead of just handling once
for one interruption, this need to be done in the polling mode or the
IO flood may prevent the GPE handler from returning.
3. Meet realtime requirement: in order not to block CPU to handle higher
realtime prioritized GPEs, lower priority GPEs can be handled in the
polling mode.
For these cases, acpi_set_gpe() should be used to switch to/from the
polling mode.
This patch adds unconditional GPE enabling support into acpi_set_gpe() so
that this API can be used by the drivers to switch back from the GPE
polling mode unconditionally.
Originally this function includes GPE clearing logic in it.
First, the GPE clearing is typically used in the GPE handling code to:
1. Acknowledge the GPE when we know there is an edge triggered GPE raised
and is about to handle it, otherwise the unexpected clearing may lead to
a GPE loss;
2. Issue actions after we have handled a level triggered GPE, otherwise
the unexpected clearing may trigger unwanted OSPM actions to the
hardware (for example, clocking in out-dated write FIFO data).
Thus the GPE clearing is not suitable to be used in the GPE enabling APIs.
Second, the combination of acknowledging and enabling may also not be
expected by the hardware drivers. For GPE clearing, we have a seperate API
acpi_clear_gpe(). There are cases drivers do want the 2 operations to be
split. So splitting these 2 operations could facilitates drivers the
maximum possibilities to achieve success. For a combined one, we already
have acpi_finish_gpe() ready to be invoked.
Given the fact that drivers should complete all outstanding requests before
putting themselves into the sleep states, as this API is executed for
outstanding requests, it should also have nothing to do with the
"RUN"/"WAKE" distinguishing. That's why the acpi_set_gpe(ACPI_GPE_ENABLE)
should not be implemented by acpi_hw_low_set_gpe(ACPI_GPE_CONDITIONAL_ENABLE).
This patch thus converts acpi_set_gpe(ACPI_GPE_ENABLE) into
acpi_hw_low_set_gpe(ACPI_GPE_ENABLE) to achieve a seperate GPE enabling API.
Drivers then are encouraged to use this API when they need to switch
to/from the GPE polling mode.
Note that the acpi_set_gpe()/acpi_finish_gpe() should be first introduced to
Linux using a divergence reduction patch before sending a linuxized version
of this patch. Lv Zheng.

This can help to reduce source code differences between Linux and ACPICA
upstream. Further driver cleanups also require these APIs to eliminate GPE
storms.
1. acpi_set_gpe(): An API that driver should invoke in the case it wants
to disable/enable IRQ without honoring the reference
count implemented in the acpi_disable_gpe() and
acpi_enable_gpe(). Note that this API should only be
invoked inside a acpi_enable_gpe()/acpi_disable_gpe()
pair.
2. acpi_finish_gpe(): Drivers returned ACPI_REENABLE_GPE unset from the
GPE handler should use this API instead of
invoking acpi_set_gpe()/acpi_enable_gpe() to
re-enable the GPE.
The GPE APIs can be invoked inside of a GPE handler or in the task context
with a driver provided lock held. This driver provided lock is safe to be
held in the GPE handler by the driver.

ACPICA commit 199cad16530a45aea2bec98e528866e20c5927e1
Since whether the GPE should be disabled/enabled/cleared should only be
determined by the GPE driver's state machine:
1. GPE should be disabled if the driver wants to switch to the GPE polling
mode when a GPE storm condition is indicated and should be enabled if
the driver wants to switch back to the GPE interrupt mode when all of
the storm conditions are cleared. The conditions should be protected by
the driver's specific lock.
2. GPE should be enabled if the driver has accepted more than one request
and should be disabled if the driver has completed all of the requests.
The request count should be protected by the driver's specific lock.
3. GPE should be cleared either when the driver is about to handle an edge
triggered GPE or when the driver has completed to handle a level
triggered GPE. The handling code should be protected by the driver's
specific lock.
Thus the GPE enabling/disabling/clearing operations are likely to be
performed with the driver's specific lock held while we currently cannot do
this. This is because:
1. We have the acpi_gbl_gpe_lock held before invoking the GPE driver's
handler. Driver's specific lock is likely to be held inside of the
handler, thus we can see some dead lock issues due to the reversed
locking order or recursive locking. In order to solve such dead lock
issues, we need to unlock the acpi_gbl_gpe_lock before invoking the
handler. BZ 1100.
2. Since GPE disabling/enabling/clearing should be determined by the GPE
driver's state machine, we shouldn't perform such operations inside of
ACPICA for a GPE handler to mess up the driver's state machine. BZ 1101.
Originally this patch includes a logic to flush GPE handlers, it is dropped
due to the following reasons:
1. This is a different issue;
2. Linux OSL has fixed this by flushing SCI in acpi_os_wait_events_complete().
We will pick up this topic when the Linux OSL fix turns out to be not
sufficient.
Note that currently the internal operations and the acpi_gbl_gpe_lock are
also used by ACPI_GPE_DISPATCH_METHOD and ACPI_GPE_DISPATCH_NOTIFY. In
order not to introduce regressions, we add one
ACPI_GPE_DISPATCH_RAW_HANDLER type to be distiguished from
ACPI_GPE_DISPATCH_HANDLER. For which the acpi_gbl_gpe_lock is unlocked before
invoking the GPE handler and the internal enabling/disabling operations are
bypassed to allow drivers to perform them at a proper position using the
GPE APIs and ACPI_GPE_DISPATCH_RAW_HANDLER users should invoke acpi_set_gpe()
instead of acpi_enable_gpe()/acpi_disable_gpe() to bypass the internal GPE
clearing code in acpi_enable_gpe(). Lv Zheng.
Known issues:
1. Edge-triggered GPE lost for frequent enablings
On some buggy silicon platforms, GPE enable line may not be directly
wired to the GPE trigger line. In that case, when GPE enabling is
frequently performed for edge-triggered GPEs, GPE status may stay set
without being triggered.
This patch may maginify this problem as it allows GPE enabling to be
parallel performed during the process the GPEs are handled.
This is an existing issue, because:
1. For task context:
Current ACPI_GPE_DISPATCH_METHOD practices have proven that this
isn't a real issue - we can re-enable edge-triggered GPE in a work
queue where the GPE status bit might already be set.
2. For IRQ context:
This can even happen when the GPE enabling occurs before returning
from the GPE handler and after unlocking the GPE lock.
Thus currently no code is included to protect this.

ACPICA commit 7926d5ca9452c87f866938dcea8f12e1efb58f89
There is an issue in acpi_install_gpe_handler() and acpi_remove_gpe_handler().
The code to obtain the GPE dispatcher type from the Handler->original_flags
is wrong:
if (((Handler->original_flags & ACPI_GPE_DISPATCH_METHOD) ||
(Handler->original_flags & ACPI_GPE_DISPATCH_NOTIFY)) &&
ACPI_GPE_DISPATCH_NOTIFY is 0x03 and ACPI_GPE_DISPATCH_METHOD is 0x02, thus
this statement is TRUE for the following dispatcher types:
0x01 (ACPI_GPE_DISPATCH_HANDLER): not expected
0x02 (ACPI_GPE_DISPATCH_METHOD): expected
0x03 (ACPI_GPE_DISPATCH_NOTIFY): expected
There is no functional issue due to this because Handler->original_flags is
only set in acpi_install_gpe_handler(), and an earlier checker has excluded
the ACPI_GPE_DISPATCH_HANDLER:
if ((gpe_event_info->Flags & ACPI_GPE_DISPATCH_MASK) ==
ACPI_GPE_DISPATCH_HANDLER)
{
Status = AE_ALREADY_EXISTS;
goto free_and_exit;
}
...
Handler->original_flags = (u8) (gpe_event_info->Flags &
(ACPI_GPE_XRUPT_TYPE_MASK | ACPI_GPE_DISPATCH_MASK));
We need to clean this up before modifying the GPE dispatcher type values.
In order to prevent such issue from happening in the future, this patch
introduces ACPI_GPE_DISPATCH_TYPE() macro to be used to obtain the GPE
dispatcher types. Lv Zheng.

ACPICA commit 8823b44ff53859ab24ecfcfd3fba8cc56b17d223
Currently we rely on the logic that GPE blocks will never be deleted,
otherwise we can be broken by the race between acpi_ev_create_gpe_block(),
acpi_ev_delete_gpe_block() and acpi_ev_gpe_detect().
On the other hand, if we want to protect GPE block creation/deletion, we
need to use a different synchronization facility to protect the period
between acpi_ev_gpe_dispatch() and acpi_ev_asynch_enable_gpe(). Which leaves us
no choice but abandoning the ACPI_MTX_EVENTS used during this period.
This patch removes ACPI_MTX_EVENTS used during this period and the

1. acpi_enable_gpe(): same check (skip if DISPATCH_NONE) is now implemented.
2. acpi_remove_gpe_handler(): a more strict check (skip if !DISPATCH_HANDLER)
is implemented.
3. acpi_update_all_gpes(): a more strict check (skip if DISPATCH_NONE ||
DISPATCH_HANDLER || CAN_WAKE)
4. acpi_set_gpe(): since it is invoked by the OSPM driver where the GPE
handler is known to be available, such check isn't needed.

There is a race condition between acpi_hw_disable_all_gpes() or
acpi_enable_all_wakeup_gpes() and acpi_ev_asynch_enable_gpe() such
that if the latter wins the race, it may mistakenly enable a GPE
disabled by the former. This may lead to premature system wakeups
during system suspend and potentially to more serious consequences.
The source of the problem is how acpi_hw_low_set_gpe() works when
passed ACPI_GPE_CONDITIONAL_ENABLE as the second argument. In that
case, the GPE will be enabled if the corresponding bit is set in the
enable_for_run mask of the GPE enable register containing that bit.
However, acpi_hw_disable_all_gpes() and acpi_enable_all_wakeup_gpes()
don't modify the enable_for_run masks of GPE registers when writing
to them. In consequence, if acpi_ev_asynch_enable_gpe(), which
eventually calls acpi_hw_low_set_gpe() with the second argument
equal to ACPI_GPE_CONDITIONAL_ENABLE, is executed in parallel with
one of these functions, it may reverse changes made by them.
To fix the problem, introduce a new enable_mask field in struct
acpi_gpe_register_info in which to store the current mask of
enabled GPEs and modify acpi_hw_low_set_gpe() to take this
mask into account instead of enable_for_run when its second
argument is equal to ACPI_GPE_CONDITIONAL_ENABLE. Also modify
the low-level routines called by acpi_hw_disable_all_gpes(),
acpi_enable_all_wakeup_gpes() and acpi_enable_all_runtime_gpes()
to update the enable_mask masks of GPE registers after all
(successful) writes to those registers.

Since acpi_hw_enable_wakeup_gpe_block() is currently always called
after disabling all GPEs, it can actually write zeros to all
non-wakeup enable bits unconditionally.
That will be useful going forward for disabling runtime GPEs and
enabling wakeup GPEs in one go instead of doing that in two steps
(disable runtime and enable wakeup) which in theory may lead to a
loss of a wakeup event.

Changes to correct several GPIO issues:
1) The update_rule in a GPIO field definition is now ignored;
a read-modify-write operation is never performed for GPIO fields.
(Internally, this means that the field assembly/disassembly
code is completely bypassed for GPIO.)
2) The Address parameter passed to a GPIO region handler is
now the bit offset of the field from a previous Connection()
operator. Thus, it becomes a "Pin Number Index" into the
Connection() resource descriptor.
3) The bit_width parameter passed to a GPIO region handler is
now the exact bit width of the GPIO field. Thus, it can be
interpreted as "number of pins".
Overall, we can now say that the region handler interface
to GPIO handlers is a raw "bit/pin" addressed interface, not
a byte-addressed interface like the system_memory handler interface.

This patch enhances ACPI_USAGE_xxx/ACPI_OPTION macros to use portable
acpi_os_printf() so that usage functions for applications no longer rely on
the printf() API.
To use acpi_os_printf() exported by osunixxf.c as a replacement of
printf(), applications need to initialize acpi_gbl_output_file to stdout
and initialize acpi_gbl_db_output_flags to ACPI_DB_CONSOLE_OUTPUT. The
latter is automatically done by ACPI_INIT_GLOBAL(), applications need to
link utglobal.o to utilize this mechanism. For GCC, assigning stdout to
acpi_gbl_output_file using ACPI_INIT_GLOBAL() is not possible as stdout is
not a constant in GCC environment. As an alternative solution, stdout
assignment has been put into acpi_os_initialize(). Thus
acpi_os_initialize() need to be invoked very early by the applications to
initialize the default output of acpi_os_printf() to keep behavior

This patch introduces formatted printing APIs to handle ACPICA specific
formatted print requirements. Currently only specific OSPMs will use this
customized printing support, Linux kernel doesn't use these APIs at this
time. It will be enabled for Linux kernel resident ACPICA after being well
tested. So currently this patch is a no-op.
The specific formatted printing APIs are useful to ACPICA as:
1. Some portable applications do not link standard C library, so they
cannot use standard formatted print APIs directly.
2. Platform specific printing format may differ and thus not portable, for
example, u64 is %ull for Linux kernel and is %uI64 for some MSVC
versions.
3. Platform specific printing format may conflict with ACPICA's usages
while it is not possible for ACPICA developers to test their code for
all platforms. For example, developers may generate %pRxxx while Linux
kernel treats %pR as structured resource printing and decodes variable
argument as a "struct resource" pointer.
This patch solves above issues by introducing the new APIs.
Note that users of such APIs are not introduced in this patch. Users of
acpi_os_file_vprintf()/acpi_ut_file_printf() need to invoke acpi_os_initialize(),
this should be taken care by the further patches where such users are
introduced. Lv Zheng.

This patch is mainly for acpidump where there are redundant
acpi_os_printf()/acpi_os_vprintf() stubs implemented. This patch cleans up such
specific implementation by linking acpidump to osunixxf.c/oswinxf.c.
To make acpi_os_printf() exported by osunixxf.c/oswinxf.c to behave as the
old acpidump specific ones, applications need to:
1. Initialize acpi_gbl_db_output_flags to ACPI_DB_CONSOLE_OUTPUT.
This is automatically done by ACPI_INIT_GLOBAL(), applications need to
link utglobal.o to utilize this mechanism.
2. Initialize acpi_gbl_output_file to stdout.
For GCC, assigning stdout to acpi_gbl_output_file using ACPI_INIT_GLOBAL()
is not possible as stdout is not a constant in GCC environment. As an
alternative solution, stdout assignment is put into acpi_os_initialize().
Thus acpi_os_initialize() need to be invoked very early by the

The utglobal.c is used to define and initialize global variables. It makes
sense if just adding utglobal.o to applications that are using such
variables. But acpi_ut_init_globals() is preventing us from doing so as
this initialization function references other components' initializations
code, which leads to the requirement that many files should also get linked
if one wants to link utglobal.o.
It is possible to just move acpi_ut_init_global() to utinit.c for
applications that require this function to link.
By linking utglobal.o, we can stop defining DEFINE_ACPI_GLOBALS for
applications (currently only acpidump is affected). Lv Zheng.

fault that can occur if a user passes the wrong file to iasl.
This patch is only useful for iasl, which is not shipped in the Linux
kernel.
After the new table reading utility functions are well tested, acpidump can
also switch to use the generic acpi_ut_read_table_xxx() APIs. Currently
this patch is no-op as acpidump does not link to the new APIs.

An error was found in the ACPICA provided non-native ACPI_IS_PRINT() causing the
following difference with the native isprint() implementation:
The GNU libc isprint('\n') test result:
isprint(0x20) is FALSE
The Linux kernel isprint('\n') test result:
ACPI: isprint(0x20) is FALSE
The _acpi_ctype isprint('\n') test result:
isprint(0x20) is TRUE
The ACPI_IS_PRINT() macro generated for _acpi_ctype is wrong. It should use
_ACPI_XS instead of _ACPI_SP. _ACPI_XS is white space only. Other space
characters should be non printable.
This patch fixes this issue. For OSPMs that are using native standard
isprint() implementations, this patch is a no-op. Lv Zheng.

It is reported that Linux x86 kernel cannot map large tables. The following
large SSDT table on such platform fails to pass checksum verification and
cannot be installed:
ACPI: SSDT 0x00000000B9638018 07A0C4 (v02 INTEL S2600CP 00004000 INTL 20100331)
It sounds strange that in the 64-bit virtual memory address space, we
cannot map a single ACPI table to do checksum verification. The root cause
is:
1. ACPICA doesn't split IO memory mapping and table mapping;
2. Linux x86 OSL implements acpi_os_map_memory() using a size limited fix-map
mechanism during early boot stage, which is more suitable for only IO
mappings.
ACPICA originally only mapped table header for signature validation, and
this header mapping is required by OSL override mechanism. There was no
checksum verification because we could not map the whole table using this
OSL. While the following ACPICA commit enforces checksum verification by
mapping the whole table during Linux boot stage and it finally triggers
this issue on some platforms:
Commit: 86dfc6f339
Subject: ACPICA: Tables: Fix table checksums verification before installation.
Before doing further cleanups for the OSL table mapping and override
implementation, this patch introduces an option for such OSPMs to
temporarily discard the checksum verification feature. It then can be
re-enabled easily when the ACPICA and the underlying OSL is ready.
This patch also deletes a comment around the limitation of mappings because
it is not correct. The limitation is not how many times we can map in the
early stage, but the OSL mapping facility may not be suitable for mapping
the ACPI tables and thus may complain us the size limitation.
The acpi_tb_verify_table() is renamed to acpi_tb_verify_temp_table() due to the
work around added, it now only applies to the table descriptor that hasn't
been installed and cannot be used in other cases. Lv Zheng.

With the NULL entry sanity check implemented, the XSDT validation is
useless because:
1. If XSDT contains NULL entries, it can be bypassed by the new sanity
check mechanism;
2. If RSDP contains a bad XSDT address, invoking XSDT validation will still
lead to a kernel crash.
This patch deletes the old XSDT validation solution and thus enables the
new NULL entry sanity check solution.
Note that if there are reports reporting regressions caused by the enabling
of the new feature and disabling of the old feature, this commit should be
bisected and reverted. Lv Zheng.

It is reported that there are buggy BIOSes in the world: AMI uses an XSDT
compiler for early BIOSes, this compiler will generate XSDT with a NULL
entry. The affected BIOS versions are "AMI BIOS F2-F4".
Original solution on Linux is to use an alternative heathy root table
instead of the ill one. This commit is:
Commit: 671cc68dc6
Subject: ACPICA: Back port and refine validation of the XSDT root table.
This is an example of such XSDT dumped from B85-HD3 (AMI F3 BIOS):
[000h 0000 4] Signature : "XSDT" [Extended System Description Table]
[004h 0004 4] Table Length : 00000074
[008h 0008 1] Revision : 01
[009h 0009 1] Checksum : 18
[00Ah 0010 6] Oem ID : "ALASKA"
[010h 0016 8] Oem Table ID : "A M I"
[018h 0024 4] Oem Revision : 01072009
[01Ch 0028 4] Asl Compiler ID : "AMI "
[020h 0032 4] Asl Compiler Revision : 00010013
[024h 0036 8] ACPI Table Address 0 : 00000000BA5F8180
[02Ch 0044 8] ACPI Table Address 1 : 00000000BA5F8290
[034h 0052 8] ACPI Table Address 2 : 00000000BA5F8308
[03Ch 0060 8] ACPI Table Address 3 : 00000000BA5F8848
[044h 0068 8] ACPI Table Address 4 : 00000000BA5F9320
[04Ch 0076 8] ACPI Table Address 5 : 00000000BA5F9360
[054h 0084 8] ACPI Table Address 6 : 00000000BA5F9398
[05Ch 0092 8] ACPI Table Address 7 : 00000000BA5F9708
[064h d100 8] ACPI Table Address 8 : 00000000BA5FC9A8
[06Ch 0108 8] ACPI Table Address 9 : 0000000000000000
But according to the bug report, the XSDT in fact is not broken. In the
above XSDT, ACPI Table Address 1-8 contains the same value as RSDT. The
differences can only be seen on the following 2 entries:
1. The first entry points to a FADT whose Revision is 5 while the first
entry in RSDT points to a FADT whose Revision is 2.
The FADT dumped from the address indicated by the first entry of XSDT:
FACP @ 0x00000000BA5F8180
0000: 46 41 43 50 0C 01 00 00<05>4B 41 4C 41 53 4B 41 FACP.....KALASKA
...
The FADT dumped from the address indicated by the first entry of RSDT:
FACP @ 0x00000000BA5ED0F0
0000: 46 41 43 50 84 00 00 00<02>A7 41 4C 41 53 4B 41 FACP......ALASKA
...
2. The last entry is a NULL terminator.
According to the test result, the Revision 5 FADT is accessible. Thus the
original solution turns out to be a work around that is preventing the
higher revision tables to be used for such platforms (they are all x86-64
platforms, and should use XSDT and higher revision FADT).
This patch offers a new solution, where a sanity check is performed before
installing a table address from XSDT. If the entry is NULL, it is simply
discarded.
Note that, this patch doesn't remove the original solution, so for Linux
kernel, this commit is actually a no-op, but it allows acpidump to be
working on such platforms. By doing so, we allow another easy revertable
commit to enable this feature so that when that commit is reverted, the
useful sanity check will not be affected. Lv Zheng.

OSPMs like Linux trend to include all header files but leave empty stub
macros for a feature that is not configured during build.
This patch cleans up global variables that are defined in utglobal.c using
ACPI_INIT_GLOBAL mechanism. In Linux, such global variables are used by
the subsystems external to ACPICA.
This patch also cleans up global variables that are defined in utglobal.c
using ACPI_GLOBAL mechanism. In Linux, such global variables are not used
or should not be used by the subsystems external to ACPICA.
External global variables can be redefined by OSPMs using
ACPI_INIT_GLOBAL/ACPI_GLOBAL macros. Thus the ACPI_GLOBAL/ACPI_INIT_GLOBAL
mechanisms can be used by OSPM to implement stubs for such external
globals.
This patch doesn't include code for Linux to use this new mechanism, thus
no functional changes. Lv Zheng.
