Ralf Baechle c8eae71dc8 [MIPS] 20K: Handle WAIT related bugs according to errata information
We used to avoid the WAIT entirely on the 20K but really only need to do
this on early revs of the 20K. Without this a 20K was a bit of a
power hog. Well, in the lower power power hog category ;-)

Alexey Dobriyan e8edc6e03a Detach sched.h from mm.h
First thing mm.h does is including sched.h solely for can_do_mlock() inline
function which has "current" dereference inside. By dealing with can_do_mlock()
mm.h can be detached from sched.h which is good. See below, why.

This patch
a) removes unconditional inclusion of sched.h from mm.h
b) makes can_do_mlock() normal function in mm/mlock.c
c) exports can_do_mlock() to not break compilation
d) adds sched.h inclusions back to files that were getting it indirectly.
e) adds less bloated headers to some files (asm/signal.h, jiffies.h) that were
   getting them indirectly

Net result is:
a) mm.h users would get less code to open, read, preprocess, parse, ... if
   they don't need sched.h
b) sched.h stops being dependency for significant number of files:
on x86_64 allmodconfig touching sched.h results in recompile of 4083 files,
   after patch it's only 3744 (-8.3%).

Roman Zippel f7e4217b00 rename thread_info to stack
This finally renames the thread_info field in task structure to stack, so that
the assumptions about this field are gone and archs have more freedom about
placing the thread_info structure.

Nonbroken archs which have a proper thread pointer can do the access to both
current thread and task structure via a single pointer.

It'll allow for a few more cleanups of the fork code, from which e.g. ia64
could benefit.

Gerd Hoffmann 69331af79c Fixes and cleanups for earlyprintk aka boot console
The console subsystem already has an idea of a boot console, using the
CON_BOOT flag. The implementation has some flaws though. The major
problem is that presence of a boot console makes register_console() ignore
any other console devices (unless explicitly specified on the kernel
command line).

This patch fixes the console selection code to *not* consider a boot
console a full-featured one, so the first non-boot console registering will
become the default console instead. This way the unregister call for the
boot console in the register_console() function actually triggers and the
handover from the boot console to the real console device works smoothly.
Added a printk for the handover, so you know which console device the
output goes to when the boot console stops printing messages.

The disable_early_printk() call is obsolete with that patch, explicitly
disabling the early console isn't needed any more as it works automagically
with that patch.

I've walked through the tree, dropped all disable_early_printk() instances
found below arch/ and tagged the consoles with CON_BOOT if needed. The
code is tested on x86, sh (thanks to Paul) and mips (thanks to Ralf).

Changes to last version: Rediffed against -rc3, adapted to mips cleanups by
Ralf, fixed "udbg-immortal" cmd line arg on powerpc.

Thomas Bogendoerfer 639702bd72 [MIPS] Register PCI host bridge resource earlier
PCI based SNI RM machines have their EISA bus behind an Intel PCI/EISA
bridge. So the PCI IO range must start at 0x0000. Changing that will
break the PCI bus, because i8259.c already has registered it's IO
addresses before the PCI bus gets initialized. Below is a patch,
which will register the PCI host bridge resources inside
register_pci_controller(). It also changes i8259.c to use insert_region(),
because request_resource() will fail, if the IO space of the PIT hanging
of the PCI host bridge (maybe passing the resource parent to
init_i8259_irqs() is a cleaner fix for that).

Fixed by inserting proper barriers in rtlx_read and rtlx_write, and careful
pointer dereferencing.

Davide Libenzi f6dfb4fd7d [PATCH] Add epoll compat_ code to fs/compat.c
IA64 and ARM-OABI are currently using their own version of epoll compat_
code.

An architecture needs epoll_event translation if alignof(u64) in 32 bit
mode is different from alignof(u64) in 64 bit mode. If an architecture
needs epoll_event translation, it must define struct compat_epoll_event in
asm/compat.h and set CONFIG_HAVE_COMPAT_EPOLL_EVENT and use
compat_sys_epoll_ctl and compat_sys_epoll_wait.

All 64 bit architecture should use compat_sys_epoll_pwait.

[sfr: restructure and move to fs/compat.c, remove MIPS version
of compat_sys_epoll_pwait, use __put_user_unaligned]

Franck Bui-Huu 9693a85378 [MIPS] Add basic SMARTMIPS ASE support
This patch adds trivial support for SMARTMIPS extension. This extension
is currently implemented by 4KS[CD] CPUs.

Basically it saves/restores ACX register, which is part of the SMARTMIPS
ASE, when needed. This patch does *not* add any support for Smartmips MMU
features.

Futhermore this patch does not add explicit support for 4KS[CD] CPUs since
they are respectively mips32 and mips32r2 compliant. So with the current
processor configuration, a platform that has such CPUs needs to select
both configs:

	CPU_HAS_SMARTMIPS
	SYS_HAS_CPU_MIPS32_R[12]

This is due to the processor configuration which is mixing up all the
architecture variants and the processor types.

The drawback of this, is that we currently pass '-march=mips32' option to
gcc when building a kernel instead of '-march=4ksc' for 4KSC case. This
can lead to a kernel image a little bit bigger than required.

Kyle McMartin d4d23add3a [PATCH] Common compat_sys_sysinfo
I noticed that almost all architectures implemented exactly the same
sys32_sysinfo... except parisc, where a bug was to be found in handling of
the uptime. So let's remove a whole whack of code for fun and profit.
Cribbed compat_sys_sysinfo from x86_64's implementation, since I figured it
would be the best tested.

This patch incorporates Arnd's suggestion of not using set_fs/get_fs, but
instead extracting out the common code from sys_sysinfo.

Atsushi Nemoto 97dcb82de6 [MIPS] Define MIPS_CPU_IRQ_BASE in generic header
The irq_base for {mips,rm7k,rm9k}_cpu_irq_init() are constant on all
platforms and are same value on most platforms (0 or 16, depends on
CONFIG_I8259). Define them in asm-mips/mach-generic/irq.h and make
them customizable. This will save a few cycle on each CPU interrupt.

A good side effect is removing some dependencies to MALTA in generic
SMTC code.

Although MIPS_CPU_IRQ_BASE is customizable, this patch changes irq
mappings on DDB5477, EMMA2RH and MIPS_SIM, since really customizing
them might cause some header dependency problem and there seems no
good reason to customize it. So currently only VR41XX is using custom
MIPS_CPU_IRQ_BASE value, which is 0 regardless of CONFIG_I8259.

Testing this patch on those platforms is greatly appreciated. Thank
you.

Gautham R Shenoy b282b6f8a8 [PATCH] Change cpu_up and co from __devinit to __cpuinit

WARNING: vmlinux - Section mismatch: reference to .init.data: from
.text between '_cpu_up' (at offset 0xc0141c37) and 'cpu_up'

This is because cpu_up, _cpu_up and __cpu_up (in some architectures) are
defined as __devinit
AND
__cpu_up calls some __cpuinit functions.

Since __cpuinit would map to __init with this kind of a configuration,
we get a .text refering .init.data warning.

This patch solves the problem by converting all of __cpu_up, _cpu_up
and cpu_up from __devinit to __cpuinit. The approach is justified since
the callers of cpu_up are either dependent on CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU or
are of __init type.

Thus when CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU=y, all these cpu up functions would land up
in .text section, and when CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU=n, all these functions would
land up in .init section.

Tested on a i386 SMP machine running linux-2.6.20-rc3-mm1.

Ralf Baechle 2efac77e82 [MIPS] Discard .exit.text and .exit.data at runtime.
While the recent cset 86384d5441 did improve
things it didn't resolve all the problems. So bite the bullet and discard
.exit.text and .exit.data at runtime. Which of course sucks because it
bloats binaries with code that will never ever be used but it's the only
thing that will work reliable as demonstrated by the function sd_major() in
drivers/scsi/sd.c.

Gcc may compile sd_major() using a jump table which it will put into
.rodata. If it also inlines sd_major's function body into exit_sd() which
gcc > 3.4.x does. If CONFIG_BLK_DEV_SD has been set to y we would like ld
to discard exit_sd's code at link time. However sd_major happens to
contain a switch statement which gcc will compile using a jump table in
.rodata on the architectures I checked. So, when ld later discards
.exit.text only the jump table in .rodata with its stale references to
the discard .exit.text will be left which any no antique ld will honor
with a link error.

Vadim Lobanov bbea9f6966 [PATCH] fdtable: Make fdarray and fdsets equal in size
Currently, each fdtable supports three dynamically-sized arrays of data: the
fdarray and two fdsets. The code allows the number of fds supported by the
fdarray (fdtable->max_fds) to differ from the number of fds supported by each
of the fdsets (fdtable->max_fdset).

In practice, it is wasteful for these two sizes to differ: whenever we hit a
limit on the smaller-capacity structure, we will reallocate the entire fdtable
and all the dynamic arrays within it, so any delta in the memory used by the
larger-capacity structure will never be touched at all.

Rather than hogging this excess, we shouldn't even allocate it in the first
place, and keep the capacities of the fdarray and the fdsets equal. This
patch removes fdtable->max_fdset. As an added bonus, most of the supporting
code becomes simpler.

* Remove redundant irq_desc initializations.
* Remove unnecessary local_irq_save/local_irq_restore, spin_lock.

With this cleanup, it would be easy to switch to slightly lightwait
irq flow handlers (handle_level_irq(), etc.) instead of __do_IRQ().

David Howells 7d12e780e0 IRQ: Maintain regs pointer globally rather than passing to IRQ handlers
Maintain a per-CPU global "struct pt_regs *" variable which can be used instead
of passing regs around manually through all ~1800 interrupt handlers in the
Linux kernel.

The regs pointer is used in few places, but it potentially costs both stack
space and code to pass it around. On the FRV arch, removing the regs parameter
from all the genirq function results in a 20% speed up of the IRQ exit path
(ie: from leaving timer_interrupt() to leaving do_IRQ()).

Where appropriate, an arch may override the generic storage facility and do
something different with the variable. On FRV, for instance, the address is
maintained in GR28 at all times inside the kernel as part of general exception
handling.

Having looked over the code, it appears that the parameter may be handed down
through up to twenty or so layers of functions. Consider a USB character
device attached to a USB hub, attached to a USB controller that posts its
interrupts through a cascaded auxiliary interrupt controller. A character
device driver may want to pass regs to the sysrq handler through the input
layer which adds another few layers of parameter passing.

I've build this code with allyesconfig for x86_64 and i386. I've runtested the
main part of the code on FRV and i386, though I can't test most of the drivers.
I've also done partial conversion for powerpc and MIPS - these at least compile
with minimal configurations.

This will affect all archs. Mostly the changes should be relatively easy.
Take do_IRQ(), store the regs pointer at the beginning, saving the old one:

	struct pt_regs *old_regs = set_irq_regs(regs);

And put the old one back at the end:

	set_irq_regs(old_regs);

Don't pass regs through to generic_handle_irq() or __do_IRQ().

In timer_interrupt(), this sort of change will be necessary:

	-	update_process_times(user_mode(regs));
	-	profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING, regs);
	+	update_process_times(user_mode(get_irq_regs()));
	+	profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING);

I'd like to move update_process_times()'s use of get_irq_regs() into itself,
except that i386, alone of the archs, uses something other than user_mode().

Some notes on the interrupt handling in the drivers:

(*) input_dev() is now gone entirely. The regs pointer is no longer stored in
     the input_dev struct.

(*) finish_unlinks() in drivers/usb/host/ohci-q.c needs checking. It does
something different depending on whether it's been supplied with a regs
     pointer or not.

(*) Various IRQ handler function pointers have been moved to type
     irq_handler_t.

David Howells afefdbb28a [PATCH] VFS: Make filldir_t and struct kstat deal in 64-bit inode numbers
These patches make the kernel pass 64-bit inode numbers internally when
communicating to userspace, even on a 32-bit system. They are required
because some filesystems have intrinsic 64-bit inode numbers: NFS3+ and XFS
for example. The 64-bit inode numbers are then propagated to userspace
automatically where the arch supports it.

Problems have been seen with userspace (eg: ld.so) using the 64-bit inode
number returned by stat64() or getdents64() to differentiate files, and
failing because the 64-bit inode number space was compressed to 32-bits, and
so overlaps occur.

This patch:

Make filldir_t take a 64-bit inode number and struct kstat carry a 64-bit
inode number so that 64-bit inode numbers can be passed back to userspace.

The stat functions then returns the full 64-bit inode number where
available and where possible. If it is not possible to represent the inode
number supplied by the filesystem in the field provided by userspace, then
error EOVERFLOW will be issued.

Similarly, the getdents/readdir functions now pass the full 64-bit inode
number to userspace where possible, returning EOVERFLOW instead when a
directory entry is encountered that can't be properly represented.

Note that this means that some inodes will not be stat'able on a 32-bit
system with old libraries where they were before - but it does mean that
there will be no ambiguity over what a 32-bit inode number refers to.

Note similarly that directory scans may be cut short with an error on a
32-bit system with old libraries where the scan would work before for the
same reasons.

It is judged unlikely that this situation will occur because modern glibc
uses 64-bit capable versions of stat and getdents class functions
exclusively, and that older systems are unlikely to encounter
unrepresentable inode numbers anyway.

David Howells 3f2e05e90e [PATCH] BLOCK: Revert patch to hack around undeclared sigset_t in linux/compat.h
Revert Andrew Morton's patch to temporarily hack around the lack of a
declaration of sigset_t in linux/compat.h to make the block-disablement
patches build on IA64. This got accidentally pushed to Linus and should
be fixed in a different manner.

Also make linux/compat.h #include asm/signal.h to gain a definition of
sigset_t so that it can externally declare sigset_from_compat().

This has been compile-tested for i386, x86_64, ia64, mips, mips64, frv, ppc and
ppc64 and run-tested on frv.

Arnd Bergmann fe74290d51 [PATCH] provide kernel_execve on all architectures
This adds the new kernel_execve function on all architectures that were using
_syscall3() to implement execve.

The implementation uses code from the _syscall3 macros provided in the
unistd.h header file. I don't have cross-compilers for any of these
architectures, so the patch is untested with the exception of i386.

Most architectures can probably implement this in a nicer way in assembly or
by combining it with the sys_execve implementation itself, but this should do
it for now.
