In device_add_property_set() we check pset parameter for a NULL, but few lines
later we do a pointer arithmetic without check that will crash kernel in the
set_secondary_fwnode().
Here we check if pset parameter is NULL and return immediately.

In commit 0db0628d90 ("kernel: delete __cpuinit usage from all core
kernel files") cpu_up() lost its __cpuinit annotation, vanishing the
need for cpu_subsys_online() to have a __ref annotation. Just drop it
to be able to catch real section mismatches in the future.

When a device is probed, the function dev_pm_domain_attach() is called
to see if there is a power-domain that is associated with the device and
needs to be turned on. If dev_pm_domain_attach() does not return
-EPROBE_DEFER then the device will be probed.
For devices using genpd, dev_pm_domain_attach() will call
genpd_dev_pm_attach(). If genpd_dev_pm_attach() does not find a power
domain associated with the device then it returns an error code not
equal to -EPROBE_DEFER to allow the device to be probed. However, if
genpd_dev_pm_attach() does find a power-domain that is associated with
the device, then it does not return -EPROBE_DEFER on failure and hence
the device will still be probed. Furthermore, genpd_dev_pm_attach() does
not check the error code returned by pm_genpd_poweron() to see if the
power-domain was turned on successfully.
Fix this by checking the return code from pm_genpd_poweron() and
returning -EPROBE_DEFER from genpd_dev_pm_attach on failure, if there
is a power-domain associated with the device.

Genpd's ->runtime_suspend() (assigned to pm_genpd_runtime_suspend())
doesn't immediately walk the hierarchy of ->runtime_suspend() callbacks.
Instead, pm_genpd_runtime_suspend() calls pm_genpd_poweroff() which
postpones that until *all* the devices in the genpd are runtime suspended.
When pm_genpd_poweroff() discovers that the last device in the genpd is
about to be runtime suspended, it calls __pm_genpd_save_device() for *all*
the devices in the genpd sequentially. Furthermore,
__pm_genpd_save_device() invokes the ->start() callback, walks the
hierarchy of the ->runtime_suspend() callbacks and invokes the ->stop()
callback. This causes a "thundering herd" problem.
Let's address this issue by having pm_genpd_runtime_suspend() immediately
walk the hierarchy of the ->runtime_suspend() callbacks, instead of
postponing that to the power off sequence via pm_genpd_poweroff(). If the
selected ->runtime_suspend() callback doesn't return an error code, call
pm_genpd_poweroff() to see if it's feasible to also power off the PM
domain.
Adopting this change enables us to simplify parts of the code in genpd,
for example the locking mechanism. Additionally, it gives some positive
side effects, as described below.
i)
One device's ->runtime_resume() latency is no longer affected by other
devices' latencies in a genpd.
The complexity genpd has to support the option to abort the power off
sequence suffers from latency issues. More precisely, a device that is
requested to be runtime resumed, may end up waiting for
__pm_genpd_save_device() to complete its operations for *another* device.
That's because pm_genpd_poweroff() can't confirm an abort request while it
waits for __pm_genpd_save_device() to return.
As this patch removes the intermediate states in pm_genpd_poweroff() while
powering off the PM domain, we no longer need the ability to abort that
sequence.
ii)
Make pm_runtime[_status]_suspended() reliable when used with genpd.
Until the last device in a genpd becomes idle, pm_genpd_runtime_suspend()
will return 0 without actually walking the hierarchy of the
->runtime_suspend() callbacks. However, by returning 0 the runtime PM core
considers the device as runtime_suspended, so
pm_runtime[_status]_suspended() will return true, even though the device
isn't (yet) runtime suspended.
After this patch, since pm_genpd_runtime_suspend() immediately walks the
hierarchy of the ->runtime_suspend() callbacks,
pm_runtime[_status]_suspended() will accurately reflect the status of the
device.
iii)
Enable fine-grained PM through runtime PM callbacks in drivers/subsystems.
There are currently cases were drivers/subsystems implements runtime PM
callbacks to deploy fine-grained PM (e.g. gate clocks, move pinctrl to
power-save state, etc.). While using the genpd, pm_genpd_runtime_suspend()
postpones invoking these callbacks until *all* the devices in the genpd
are runtime suspended. In essence, one runtime resumed device prevents
fine-grained PM for other devices within the same genpd.
After this patch, since pm_genpd_runtime_suspend() immediately walks the
hierarchy of the ->runtime_suspend() callbacks, fine-grained PM is enabled
throughout all the levels of runtime PM callbacks.
iiii)
Enable fine-grained PM for IRQ safe devices
Per the definition for an IRQ safe device, its runtime PM callbacks must
be able to execute in atomic context. In the path while genpd walks the
hierarchy of the ->runtime_suspend() callbacks for the device, it uses a
mutex. Therefore, genpd prevents that path to be executed for IRQ safe
devices.
As this patch changes pm_genpd_runtime_suspend() to immediately walk the
hierarchy of the ->runtime_suspend() callbacks and without needing to use
a mutex, fine-grained PM is enabled throughout all the levels of runtime
PM callbacks for IRQ safe devices.
Unfortunately this patch also comes with a drawback, as described in the
summary below.
Driver's/subsystem's runtime PM callbacks may be invoked even when the
genpd hasn't actually powered off the PM domain, potentially introducing
unnecessary latency.
However, in most cases, saving/restoring register contexts for devices are
typically fast operations or can be optimized in device specific ways
(e.g. shadow copies of register contents in memory, device-specific checks
to see if context has been lost before restoring context, etc.).
Still, in some cases the driver/subsystem may suffer from latency if
runtime PM is used in a very fine-grained manner (e.g. for each IO request
or xfer). To prevent that extra overhead, the driver/subsystem may deploy
the runtime PM autosuspend feature.

With the msi_list and the msi_domain properties now being at the
generic device level, it is starting to be relatively easy to offer
a generic way of providing non-PCI MSIs.
The two major hurdles with this idea are:
- Lack of global ID that identifies a device: this is worked around by
having a global ID allocator for each device that gets enrolled in
the platform MSI subsystem
- Lack of standard way to write the message in the generating device.
This is solved by mandating driver code to provide a write_msg
callback, so that everyone can have their own square wheel
Apart from that, the API is fairly straightforward:
- platform_msi_create_irq_domain creates an MSI domain that gets
tagged with DOMAIN_BUS_PLATFORM_MSI
- platform_msi_domain_alloc_irqs allocate MSIs for a given device,
populating the msi_list
- platform_msi_domain_free_irqs does what is written on the tin

When inserting a new register into a block, the present bit map size is
increased using krealloc. krealloc does not clear the additionally
allocated memory, leaving it filled with random values. Result is that
some registers are considered cached even though this is not the case.
Fix the problem by clearing the additionally allocated memory. Also, if
the bitmap size does not increase, do not reallocate the bitmap at all
to reduce overhead.

If the parent is still suspended when driver probe is
attempted, the result may be failure.
For example, if the parent is a PCI MFD device that has been
suspended when we try to probe our device, any register
reads will return 0xffffffff.
To fix the problem, making sure the parent is always awake
before attempting driver probe.

Typically when a device is created the bus core it belongs to (for example
PCI) does not know if the device supports things like latency tolerance.
This is left to the driver that binds to the device in question. However,
at that time the device has already been created and there is no way to set
its dev->power.set_latency_tolerance anymore.
So follow what has been done for other PM QoS attributes as well and allow
drivers to expose and hide latency tolerance from userspace, if the device
supports it.

Move msi_list from struct pci_dev into struct device, so we can
support non-PCI-device based generic MSI interrupts.
msi_list is now conditional under CONFIG_GENERIC_MSI_IRQ, which is
selected from CONFIG_PCI_MSI, so no functional change for PCI MSI
users.

Don't unset the direct_complete flag on devices that have runtime PM
disabled, if they are runtime suspended.
This is needed because otherwise ancestor devices wouldn't be able to
do direct_complete without adding runtime PM support to all its
descendants.
Also removes pm_runtime_suspended_if_enabled() because it's now unused.

Allow the user to write the cache_only and cache_bypass settings.
This can be useful for debugging.
Since this can lead to the hardware getting out-of-sync with the
cache, at least for the period that the cache state is forced, the
kernel is tainted and the action is recorded in the kernel log.
When disabling cache_only through debugfs a cache sync will be performed.

Static analysis by cppcheck found an issue that was recently introduced by
commit 471f7707b6 ("PM / clock_ops: make __pm_clk_enable more generic")
where a return status in ret was not being initialised and garbage
being returned when ce->status >= PCE_STATUS_ERROR.
The fact that ret is not being checked by the caller and that
ret is only used internally __pm_clk_enable() to check if clk_enable()
was OK means we can ignore returning it instead turn
__pm_clk_enable() into function with a void return.

Add an optional delay_us field in reg_sequence to allow the client to
specify a delay (in microseconds) to be applied after any given write
in a sequence of writes.
We treat a delay in a sequence the same way we treat a page change as
they are logically similar in that you can coalesce all write before
a delay (in the same way you can coalesce all writes before a page
change is needed)

Separate the functionality using sequences of register writes from the
functions that take register defaults. This change renames the arguments
in order to support the extension of reg_sequence to take an optional
delay to be applied after any given register in a sequence is written.
This avoids adding an int to all register defaults, which could
substantially increase memory usage for regmaps with large default tables.
This also updates all the clients of multi_reg_write/register_patch.

Currently regmap requires that a reg_read callback is supplied, otherwise a
warning is emitted each time regmap_read() is called. This means a device
or bus without readback support needs to supply dummy reg_read callback.
Apart from that regmap_read() will still work fine if a cache is used.
Remove the warning and let regmap_readable() return false if not reg_read
callback is supplied. This means a device no longer has to supply a dummy
callback if it does not support readback and it also doesn't have to have a
readable_reg callback that always returns false since this is now implicit.

The firmware class uevent function accessed the "fw_priv->buf" buffer
without the proper locking and testing for NULL. This is an old bug
(looks like it goes back to 2012 and commit 1244691c73b2: "firmware
loader: introduce firmware_buf"), but for some reason it's triggering
only now in 4.2-rc1.
Shuah Khan is trying to bisect what it is that causes this to trigger
more easily, but in the meantime let's just fix the bug since others are
hitting it too (at least Ingo reports having seen it as well).

If dev_pm_attach_wake_irq() fails, the device's power.wakeirq field
should not be set to point to the struct wake_irq passed to that
function, as that object will be freed going forward.
For this reason, make dev_pm_attach_wake_irq() first call
device_wakeup_attach_irq() and only set the device's power.wakeirq
field if that's successful.
That requires device_wakeup_attach_irq() to be called under the
device's power.lock lock, but since dev_pm_attach_wake_irq() is
the only caller of it, the requisite changes are easy to make.

If pm_genpd_{add,remove}_device() keeps on failing with -EAGAIN, we end
up with an infinite loop in genpd_dev_pm_{at,de}tach().
This may happen due to a genpd.prepared_count imbalance. This is a bug
elsewhere, but it will result in a system lock up, possibly during
reboot of an otherwise functioning system.
To avoid this, put a limit on the maximum number of loop iterations,
using an exponential back-off mechanism. If the limit is reached, the
operation will just fail. An error message is already printed.

This patch initalises all low memory struct pages and 2G of the highest
zone on each node during memory initialisation if
CONFIG_DEFERRED_STRUCT_PAGE_INIT is set. That config option cannot be set
but will be available in a later patch. Parallel initialisation of struct
page depends on some features from memory hotplug and it is necessary to
alter alter section annotations.

probing changes was found to not work well, so they were reverted.

Commit 8a0662d9 introduced of_node and acpi_node symbols in global namespace
but there were already ~63 of_node local variables or function parameters
(no single acpi_node though, but anyway).
After debugging undefined but used of_node local varible (which turned out
to reference static function of_node() instead) it became clear that the names
for the functions are too short and too generic for global scope.

The way the mask is generated in regmap_field_init() is wrong.
Indeed, a field initialized with msb = 31 and lsb = 0 provokes a shift
overflow while calculating the mask field.
On some 32 bits architectures, such as x86, the generated mask is 0,
instead of the expected 0xffffffff.

Currently the con_id of the acquired clock is printed for debugging
purposes. But in several cases, the con_id is NULL, which doesn't
provide much debugging information when printed. These cases are:
- When explicitly passing a NULL con_id (which means the first clock
tied to the device, if available),
- When not using pm_clk_add(), but pm_clk_add_clk() (which takes a
"struct clk *" directly).
Hence print the actual clock name in addition to (and not instead of;
thanks Grygorii Strashko!) the con_id.
Note that the clock name is not available with legacy clock frameworks,
and the hex pointer address will be printed instead.

The PM Domain code uses ktime_get() to perform various latency
measurements. However, if ktime_get() is called while timekeeping is
suspended, the following warning is printed:

This happens when resuming the PM Domain that contains the clock events
source, which calls pm_genpd_syscore_poweron(). Chain of operations is:

Fix this by adding a "timed" parameter to genpd_power_{on,off}() and
pm_genpd_sync_power{off,on}(), to indicate whether latency measurements
are allowed. This parameter is passed as false in
genpd_syscore_switch() (i.e. during syscore suspend/resume), and true in
all other cases.

In big endian mode regmap_bulk_read gives incorrect data
for byte reads.
This is because memcpy of a single byte from an address
after full word read gives different results when
endianness differs. ie. we get little-end in LE and big-end in BE.

Currently, device drivers, which support both OF and ACPI,
need to call two separate APIs, of_dma_is_coherent() and
acpi_dma_is_coherent()) to determine device coherency attribute.
This patch simplifies this process by introducing a new device
property API, device_dma_is_coherent(), which calls the appropriate
interface based on the booting architecture.

Move the trace_device_pm_callback locations for dpm_prepare and dpm_complete
to encompass the attempt to capture the device mutex prior to callback. This
is needed by analyze_suspend to identify gaps in the trace output caused by
the delay in locking the mutex for a device.

set_irq_flags is ARM specific with custom flags which have genirq
equivalents. Convert drivers to use the genirq interfaces directly, so we
can kill off set_irq_flags. The translation of flags is as follows:
IRQF_VALID -> !IRQ_NOREQUEST
IRQF_PROBE -> !IRQ_NOPROBE
IRQF_NOAUTOEN -> IRQ_NOAUTOEN
For IRQs managed by an irqdomain, the irqdomain core code handles clearing
and setting IRQ_NOREQUEST already, so there is no need to do this in
.map() functions and we can simply remove the set_irq_flags calls. Some
users also set IRQ_NOPROBE and this has been maintained although it is not
clear that is really needed. There appears to be a great deal of blind
copy and paste of this code.

kcalloc(0) returns a special value ZERO_SIZE_PTR which is non-NULL value
but results in fault only on any attempt to dereferencing it. So

insert_resource() can fail when the resource added overlaps
(partially or fully) with another.
Device tree and AMBA devices may contain resources that overlap, so they
could not call platform_device_add (see 02bbde7849 ('Revert "of:
use platform_device_add"'))"
On the other hand, device trees are released using
platform_device_unregister(). This function calls platform_device_del(),
which calls release_resource(), that crashes when the resource has not
been added with with insert_resource. This was not an issue when the
device tree could not be modified online, but this is not the case
anymore.
This patch let the flow continue when there is an insert error, after
notifying the user with a dev_err(). r->parent is set to NULL, so
platform_device_del() knows that the resource was not added, and
therefore it should not be released.

platform_device_del only checks the type of the resource in order to
call release_resource.
On the other hand, platform_device_add calls insert_resource for any
resource that has a parent.
Make both code branches balanced.

Commit 5590f3196b ("drivers/core/of: Add symlink to device-tree from
devices with an OF node") adds the symlink `of_node` for each device
pointing to it's device tree node while creating/initialising it.
However the devicetree sysfs is created and setup in of_init which is
executed at core_initcall level. For all the devices created before
of_init, the following error is thrown:
"Error -2(-ENOENT) creating of_node link"
Like many other components in driver model, initialize the sysfs support
for OF/devicetree from driver_init so that it's ready before any devices
are created.

We currently use flexible arrays with a char at the
end for the remaining internal firmware name uses.
There are two limitations with the way we use this.
Since we're using a flexible array for a string on the
struct if we wanted to use two strings it means we'd
have a disjoint means of handling the strings, one
using the flexible array, and another a char * pointer.
We're also currently not using 'const' for the string.
We wish to later extend some firmware data structures
with other string/char pointers, but we also want to be
very pedantic about const usage. Since we're going to
change things to use 'const' we might as well also address
unified way to use multiple strings on the structs.
Replace the flexible array practice for strings with
kstrdup_const() and kfree_const(), this will avoid
allocations when the vmlinux .rodata is used, and just
allocate a new proper string for us when needed. This
also means we can simplify the struct allocations by
removing the string length from the allocation size
computation, which would otherwise get even more
complicated when supporting multiple strings.

When direct firmware loading is used we iterate over a list
of possible firmware paths and concatenate the desired firmware
name with each path and look for the file there. Should the
passed firmware name be too long we end up truncating the
file we want to look for, the search however is still done.
Add a check for truncation instead of looking for a
truncated firmware filename.

The request_firmware*() APIs uses __getname() to iterate
over the list of paths possible for firmware to be found,
the code however never checked for failure on __getname().
Although *very unlikely*, this can still happen. Add the
missing check.
There is still no checks on the concatenation of the path
and filename passed, that requires a bit more work and
subsequent patches address this. The commit that introduced
this is abb139e7 ("firmware: teach the kernel to load
firmware files directly from the filesystem").

There are drivers that can not be probed asynchronously. One such group
is platform drivers registered with platform_driver_probe(), which
expects driver's probe routine be discarded after the driver has been
registered and initial binding attempt executed. Also
platform_driver_probe() an error when no devices were bound to the
driver, allowing failing to load such driver module altogether.
Other drivers do not work well with asynchronous probing because of
driver bug or not optimal driver organization.
To allow using such drivers even when user requests asynchronous probing
as default boot strategy, let's allow them to opt out.

Some init systems may wish to express the desire to have device drivers
run their probe() code asynchronously. This implements support for this
and allows userspace to request async probe as a preference through a
generic shared device driver module parameter, async_probe.
Implementation for async probe is supported through a module parameter
given that since synchronous probe has been prevalent for years some
userspace might exist which relies on the fact that the device driver
will probe synchronously and the assumption that devices it provides
will be immediately available after this.

Some devices take a long time when initializing, and not all drivers are
suited to initialize their devices when they are open. For example,
input drivers need to interrogate their devices in order to publish
device's capabilities before userspace will open them. When such drivers
are compiled into kernel they may stall entire kernel initialization.
This change allows drivers request for their probe functions to be
called asynchronously during driver and device registration (manual
binding is still synchronous). Because async_schedule is used to perform
asynchronous calls module loading will still wait for the probing to
complete.
Note that the end goal is to make the probing asynchronous by default,
so annotating drivers with PROBE_PREFER_ASYNCHRONOUS is a temporary
measure that allows us to speed up boot process while we validating and
fixing the rest of the drivers and preparing userspace.

Currently there is no way to query which CPUs are in nohz_full
mode from userspace.
Export the CPU list running in nohz_full mode in sysfs,
specifically in the file /sys/devices/system/cpu/nohz_full
This can be used by system management tools like libvirt,
openstack, and others to ensure proper task placement.

After system bootup, there is no totally reliable way to see
which CPUs are isolated, because the kernel may modify the
CPUs specified on the isolcpus= kernel command line option.
Export the CPU list that actually got isolated in sysfs,
specifically in the file /sys/devices/system/cpu/isolated
This can be used by system management tools like libvirt,
openstack, and others to ensure proper placement of tasks.

Turns out we can automate the handling for the device_may_wakeup()
quite a bit by using the kernel wakeup source list as suggested
by Rafael J. Wysocki <rjw@rjwysocki.net>.
And as some hardware has separate dedicated wake-up interrupt
in addition to the IO interrupt, we can automate the handling by
adding a generic threaded interrupt handler that just calls the
device PM runtime to wake up the device.
This allows dropping code from device drivers as we currently
are doing it in multiple ways, and often wrong.
For most drivers, we should be able to drop the following
boilerplate code from runtime_suspend and runtime_resume
functions:

If we don't update last_busy in rpm_resume, devices can go back
to sleep immediately after resume. This happens at least in
cases where the device has been powered off and does not have
any interrupt pending until there's something in the FIFO.

In the final iteration of commit 245bd6f6af ("PM / clock_ops: Add
pm_clk_add_clk()"), a refcount increment was added by Grygorii Strashko.
However, the accompanying IS_ERR() check operates on the wrong clock
pointer, which is always zero at this point, i.e. not an error.
This may lead to a NULL pointer dereference later, when __clk_get()
tries to dereference an error pointer.
Check the passed clock pointer instead to fix this.

Existing regmap users call regcache_mark_dirty() as part of the
suspend/resume sequence, to tell regcache that non-default values need to
be resynced post-resume. Add an internal "no_sync_defaults" regmap flag
to remember this state, so that regcache_sync() can differentiate between
these two cases:
1) HW was reset, so any cache values that match map->reg_defaults can be
safely skipped. On some chips there are a lot of registers in the
reg_defaults list, so this optimization speeds things up quite a bit.
2) HW was not reset (maybe it was just clock-gated), so if we cached
any writes, they should be sent to the hardware regardless of whether
they match the HW default. Currently this will write out all values in
the regcache, since we don't maintain per-register dirty bits.

There's a deadlock when concurrently hot-adding memory through the probe
interface and switching a memory block from offline to online.
When hot-adding memory via the probe interface, add_memory() first takes
mem_hotplug_begin() and then device_lock() is later taken when registering
the newly initialized memory block. This creates a lock dependency of (1)
mem_hotplug.lock (2) dev->mutex.
When switching a memory block from offline to online, dev->mutex is first
grabbed in device_online() when the write(2) transitions an existing
memory block from offline to online, and then online_pages() will take
mem_hotplug_begin().
This creates a lock inversion between mem_hotplug.lock and dev->mutex.
Vitaly reports that this deadlock can happen when kworker handling a probe
event races with systemd-udevd switching a memory block's state.
This patch requires the state transition to take mem_hotplug_begin()
before dev->mutex. Hot-adding memory via the probe interface creates a
memory block while holding mem_hotplug_begin(), there is no way to take
dev->mutex first in this case.
online_pages() and offline_pages() are only called when transitioning
memory block state. We now require that mem_hotplug_begin() is taken
before calling them -- this requires exporting the mem_hotplug_begin() and
mem_hotplug_done() to generic code. In all hot-add and hot-remove cases,
mem_hotplug_begin() is done prior to device_online(). This is all that is
needed to avoid the deadlock.

Introduce data structures and code allowing "built-in" properties
to be associated with devices in such a way that they will be used
by the device_property_* API if no proper firmware node (neither DT
nor ACPI) is present for the given device.
Each property is to be represented by a property_entry structure.
An array of property_entry structures (terminated with a null
entry) can be pointed to by the properties field of struct
property_set that can be added as a firmware node to a struct
device using device_add_property_set(). That will cause the
device_property_* API to use that property_set as the source
of properties if the given device does not have a DT node or
an ACPI companion device object associated with it.

Add a secondary pointer to struct fwnode_handle so as to make it
possible for a device to have two firmware nodes associated with
it at the same time, for example, an ACPI node and a node with
a set of properties provided by platform initialization code.
In the future that will allow device property lookup to fall back
from the primary firmware node to the secondary one if the given
property is not present there to make it easier to provide defaults
for device properties used by device drivers.
Introduce two helper routines, set_primary_fwnode() and
set_secondary_fwnode() allowing callers to add a primary/secondary
firmware node to the given device in such a way that
(1) If there's only one firmware node for that device, it will be
pointed to by the device's firmware node pointer.
(2) If both the primary and secondary firmware nodes are present,
the primary one will be pointed to by the device's firmware
node pointer, while the secondary one will be pointed to by the
primary node's secondary pointer.
(3) If one of these nodes is removed (by calling one of the new
nelpers with NULL as the second argument), the other one will
be preserved.
Make ACPI use set_primary_fwnode() for attaching its firmware nodes
to devices.

Now that the ACPI companions of devices are pointed to by the fwnode
field in struct device, the device_property_*() accessor functions
can be modified to use their fwnode_property_*() counterparts
internally with minimum extra overhead in the IS_ENABLED(CONFIG_OF)
case, so make those changes.
This allows us to get rid of the rather ugly DEV_PROP_READ_ARRAY()
macro among other things.

This fixes a regression from the net subsystem:
After commit d52fdbb735
"smc91x: retrieve IRQ and trigger flags in a modern way"
a regression would appear on some legacy platforms such
as the ARM PXA Zylonite that specify IRQ resources like
this:

The previous code would retrieve the resource and parse
the high edge setting in the SMC91x driver, a use pattern
that means every driver specifying an IRQ flag from a
static resource need to parse resource flags and apply
them at runtime.
As we switched the code to use IRQ descriptors to retrieve
the the trigger type like this:
irqd_get_trigger_type(irq_get_irq_data(...));
the code would work for new platforms using e.g. device
tree as the backing irq descriptor would have its flags
properly set, whereas this kind of oldstyle static
resources at no point assign the trigger flags to the
corresponding IRQ descriptor.
To make the behaviour identical on modern device tree
and legacy static platform data platforms, modify
platform_get_irq() to assign the trigger flags to the
irq descriptor when a client looks up an IRQ from static
resources.

Currently probe deferral prints a message every time a device requests
deferral at info severity (which is displayed by default). This can have
an impact on system boot times with serial consoles and is generally quite
noisy.
Since subsystems and drivers should already be logging the specific reason
for probe deferral in order to aid users in understanding problems the
messages from the driver core should be redundant lower the severity of
the messages printed, cutting down on the volume of output on the console.
This does mean that if the drivers and subsystems aren't doing a good job
we get no output on the console by default. Ideally we'd be able to arrange
to print if nothing else printed, though that's a little fun. Even better
would be to come up with a mechanism that explicitly does dependencies so
we don't have to keep polling and erroring.

So I've been annoyed lately with having a bunch of devices such as i2c
eeproms (for use by VPDs, server world !) and other bits and pieces that
I want to be able to identify from userspace, and possibly provide
additional data about from FW.
Basically, it boils down to correlating the sysfs device with the OF
tree device node, so that user space can use device-tree info such as
additional "location" or "label" (or whatever else we can come up with)
propreties to identify a given device, or get some attributes of use
about it, etc...
Now, so far, we've done that in some subsystem in a fairly ad-hoc basis
using "devspec" properties. For example, PCI creates them if it can
correlate the probed device with a DT node. Some powerpc specific busses
do that too.
However, i2c doesn't and it would be nice to have something more generic
since technically any device can have a corresponding device tree node.
This patch adds an "of_node" symlink to devices that have a non-NULL
dev->of_node pointer, the patch is pretty trivial and seems to work just
fine for me.

When using the user mode helper to load firmwares the function _request_firmware
gets a positive return value from fw_load_from_user_helper and because of this
the firmware buffer is not assigned. This happens only when the return value
is zero. This patch fixes this problem in _request_firmware_load. When the
completion is ready the return value is set to zero.

On architectures that depend on DT for obtaining cache hierarcy, we need
to validate the device node for all the cache indices, failing to do so
might result in wrong information being exposed to the userspace.
This is quite possible on initial/incomplete versions of the device
trees. In such cases, it's better to bail out if all the required device
nodes are not present.
This patch adds checks for the validation of device node for all the
caches and doesn't initialise the cacheinfo if there's any error.

pm_genpd_remove_device() tries hard to validate the generic PM domain
passed to it, but the validation is not complete.
dev->pm_domain contains a struct dev_pm_domain, which is the "base
class" of generic PM domains. Other users of dev_pm_domains include
stuff like vga_switheroo. Hence, a device could have a generic PM
domain or a vga_switcheroo PM domain in dev->pm_domain.
We need ot be certain that the PM domain is actually valid before we
try to remove it. We can do this easily as we have a way to get the
current validated generic PM domain for a struct device. This must
match the generic PM domain being requested for removal.
Convert the code to use this alternative validation method instead.

The PM domain code contains two methods to get the generic PM domain
for a struct device. One is dev_to_genpd() which is only safe when
we know for certain that the device has a generic PM domain attached.
The other is coded into genpd_dev_pm_detach() which ensures that the
PM domain in the struct device is a generic PM domain (and so is safer).
This commit factors out the safer version, documents it, and hides the
unsafe dev_to_genpd().

PM domains are rather noisy; scheduling behaviour can cause callbacks
to take longer, which causes them to spit out a warning-level message
each time a callback takes a little longer than the previous time.
There really isn't a need for this, except when debugging.

Buses which currently supports attaching devices to their PM domains,
will invoke the dev_pm_domain_attach() API from their ->probe()
callbacks. During the attach procedure, genpd power up the PM domain.
In those scenarios where the bus/driver don't need to access its device
during probe, it may leave it in runtime PM suspended state since
that's also the default state. In that way, no notifications through
the runtime PM callbacks will reach the PM domain during probe.
For genpd, the consequence from the above scenario means the PM domain
will remain powered. Therefore, implement the struct dev_pm_domain's
->sync() callback, which is invoked from driver core after the
bus/driver has probed the device. It allows genpd to power off the PM
domain if it's unused.

If PM domains are in use, it may be necessary to prepare the code
handling a PM domain for driver probing. For example, in some
cases device drivers rely on the ability to power on the devices
with the help of the IO runtime PM framework and the PM domain
code needs to be ready for that. Also, if that code has not been
fully initialized yet, the driver probing should be deferred.
Moreover, after the probing is complete, it may be necessary to
put the PM domain in question into the state reflecting the current
needs of the devices in it, for example, so that power is not drawn
in vain. The same should be done after removing a driver from
a device, as the PM domain state may need to be changed to reflect
the new situation.
For these reasons, introduce new PM domain callbacks, ->activate,
->sync and ->dismiss called, respectively, before probing for a
device driver, after the probing has completed successfully and
if the probing has failed or the driver has been removed.

The tracing events for regmap are confined to the regmap subsystem. It
also requires accessing an internal header. Instead of including the
internal header from a generic file location, move the tracing file
into the regmap directory.
Also rename the regmap tracing header to trace.h, as it is redundant to
keep the regmap.h name when it is in the regmap directory.

Occasionally, the system can't come back up after suspend/resume
due to problems of device suspending phase. This patch make
PM_TRACE infrastructure cover device suspending phase of

Now that we have struct fwnode_handle, we can use that to point to
ACPI companions from struct device objects instead of pointing to
struct acpi_device directly.
There are two benefits from that. First, the somewhat ugly and
hackish struct acpi_dev_node can be dropped and, second, the same
struct fwnode_handle pointer can be used in the future to point
to other (non-ACPI) firmware device node types.

When inserting a new register into a block at the lower end the present
bitmap is currently shifted into the wrong direction. The effect of this is
that the bitmap becomes corrupted and registers which are present might be
reported as not present and vice versa.
Fix this by shifting left rather than right.

Export pm_system_wakeup function to allow irq handlers to deal with system
wakeup.
This is needed for shared IRQ lines where one of the handler is registered
with IRQF_NO_SUSPEND, while the other ones want to configure it as a wakeup
source.
In this specific case, irq core does not handle the wakeup process and
leave the decision to each irq handler.

regcache_sync() spews warnings when a value was cached for a read-only
register as it tries to write all registers no matter whether they are
writable or not. This patch adds regmap_wrtieable() checks for
avoiding it in regcache_sync_block_single() and regcache_block_raw().

Since commit 1c6c69525b ("genirq: Reject
bogus threaded irq requests") threaded IRQs without a primary handler
need to be requested with IRQF_ONESHOT, otherwise the request will fail.
The %irq_flags flag is used to request the threaded IRQ and is also a
parameter of the caller. Hence, we cannot be sure that IRQF_ONESHOT is
set. This change avoids the potentially missing flag by setting
IRQF_ONESHOT when requesting the threaded IRQ.

printk and friends can now format bitmaps using '%*pb[l]'. cpumask
and nodemask also provide cpumask_pr_args() and nodemask_pr_args()
respectively which can be used to generate the two printf arguments
necessary to format the specified cpu/nodemask.
* Line termination only requires one extra space at the end of the
buffer. Use PAGE_SIZE - 1 instead of PAGE_SIZE - 2 when formatting.

Pull ACPI and power management updates from Rafael Wysocki:
"We have a few new features this time, including a new SFI-based
cpufreq driver, a new devfreq driver for Tegra Activity Monitor, a new
devfreq class for providing its governors with raw utilization data
and a new ACPI driver for AMD SoCs.
Still, the majority of changes here are reworks of existing code to
make it more straightforward or to prepare it for implementing new
features on top of it. The primary example is the rework of ACPI
resources handling from Jiang Liu, Thomas Gleixner and Lv Zheng with

SMBus access functions assume that 16-bit values are formatted as
little endian numbers. The direct i2c access functions in regmap,
however, assume that 16-bit values are formatted as big endian numbers.
As a result, the current code returns different values if an i2c chip's
16-bit registers are accessed through i2c access functions vs. SMBus
access functions.
Use regmap_smbus_read_word_swapped and regmap_smbus_write_word_swapped
for 16-bit SMBus accesses if a chip is configured as REGMAP_ENDIAN_BIG.
If the chip is configured as REGMAP_ENDIAN_LITTLE, keep using
regmap_smbus_write_word_data and regmap_smbus_read_word_data. Otherwise
reject registration if the controller does not support direct i2c accesses.

this request has to be aborted for the following reasons:

Clients using the dev_pm_put_subsys_data() API isn't interested of a
return value. They care only of decreasing a reference to the device's
pm_subsys_data. So, let's convert the API to a void function, which
anyway seems like reasonable thing to do.

The optional genpd's ->attach_dev() callback is invoked from
__pm_genpd_add_device(). Let's add error handling from the response
from this callback and propagate the error code.
When __pm_genpd_add_device() is invoked through the generic OF-based PM
domain look-up path, the device is being probed. Returning an error
will mean the device won't be attached to its PM domain. Errors of
-EPROBE_DEFER get special treatment and is propagated to the driver
core.
Therefore this change also enables the ->attach_dev() callback to
be able to request for a deferred probe sequence.

Move the initialization of the struct generic_pm_domain_data into
genpd_alloc_dev_data(), including the assignment of the device's
->pm_domain() callback. Make corresponding changes to
genpd_free_dev_data().
These changes will make the related code more readable. It will also
decrease the critical regions for where genpd's mutex is being held and
for where the device's power related spinlock is being held.

The error path in __pm_genpd_add_device() didn't decrease the reference
to the struct pm_subsys_data.
Let's move the calls to dev_pm_get|put_subsys_data() into
genpd_alloc|free_dev_data() to fix this issue and thus prevent a
potential memory leakage.

While adding devices to their PM domains, dev_pm_qos_add_notifier() was
invoked while allocating the generic_pm_domain_data for the device.
Since the generic_pm_domain_data's device pointer will be assigned
after allocation, the ->genpd_dev_pm_qos_notifier() callback could be
called prior having a valid pointer to the device. Similar scenario
existed while removing a device from a genpd.
To cope with these scenarios a mutex was used to protect the pointer to
the device.
By re-order the sequence for when dev_pm_qos_add|remove_notifier() are
invoked, we make sure the ->genpd_dev_pm_qos_notifier() callback are
always called with a valid device pointer available.
In this way, we eliminate the need for protecting the pointer and thus
we can remove the mutex from the struct generic_pm_domain_data.

When adding a device to a genpd, we no longer need to walk genpd's list
of existing devices to verify it hasn't already been added.
Instead we can now rely on the verification of not allowing existing
generic_pm_domain_data for a device, since that has the same meaning.

When adding a device to a genpd, a struct generic_pm_domain_data is
allocated per device.
Verify that there are no existing generic_pm_domain_data for the device
we are about to add, since that tells us it has already been added to a
genpd.
When genpd supported PM domain device callbacks, this was a valid
scenario. Now it isn't so let's return an error code.

Add lockdep asserts for holding the RCU lock when calling
dev_pm_opp_get_freq() and dev_pm_opp_get_voltage() to aid in detecting
RCU misuses.
These are called often after dev_pm_opp_find_freq_ceil/exact() which
already asserts for RCU lock. However one could make an error by
releasing lock too early - just after dev_pm_opp_find_freq_ceil().

Not having OPP defined for a device is not a crime, we should not splat
warning in this case. Also, it seems that we are ready to accept invalid
dev (find_device_opp will return ERR_PTR(-EINVAL) then) so let's not
crash in dev_name() in such case.

This function looks up a PM domain form the provider. This will be
useful to add parent/child domain relationship from the SoC specific
code. The caller of the function must make sure that PM domain provider
is already registered.

This is just a small optimization. The start_pfn can be obtained directly

Lots of activity in the devicetree code for v3.18. Most of it is related
to getting all of the overlay support code in place, but there are other
important things in there.

This time we have some more new material than we used to have during
the last couple of development cycles.
The most important part of it to me is the introduction of a unified
interface for accessing device properties provided by platform
firmware. It works with Device Trees and ACPI in a uniform way and
drivers using it need not worry about where the properties come
from as long as the platform firmware (either DT or ACPI) makes
them available. It covers both devices and "bare" device node
objects without struct device representation as that turns out to
be necessary in some cases. This has been in the works for quite
a few months (and development cycles) and has been approved by
all of the relevant maintainers.
On top of that, some drivers are switched over to the new interface
(at25, leds-gpio, gpio_keys_polled) and some additional changes are
made to the core GPIO subsystem to allow device drivers to manipulate
GPIOs in the "canonical" way on platforms that provide GPIO information
in their ACPI tables, but don't assign names to GPIO lines (in which
case the driver needs to do that on the basis of what it knows about
the device in question). That also has been approved by the GPIO
core maintainers and the rfkill driver is now going to use it.
Second is support for hardware P-states in the intel_pstate driver.
It uses CPUID to detect whether or not the feature is supported by
the processor in which case it will be enabled by default. However,
it can be disabled entirely from the kernel command line if necessary.
Next is support for a platform firmware interface based on ACPI
operation regions used by the PMIC (Power Management Integrated
Circuit) chips on the Intel Baytrail-T and Baytrail-T-CR platforms.
That interface is used for manipulating power resources and for
thermal management: sensor temperature reporting, trip point setting
and so on.
Also the ACPI core is now going to support the _DEP configuration
information in a limited way. Basically, _DEP it supposed to reflect
off-the-hierarchy dependencies between devices which may be very
indirect, like when AML for one device accesses locations in an
operation region handled by another device's driver (usually, the
device depended on this way is a serial bus or GPIO controller).
The support added this time is sufficient to make the ACPI battery
driver work on Asus T100A, but it is general enough to be able to
cover some other use cases in the future.
Finally, we have a new cpufreq driver for the Loongson1B processor.
In addition to the above, there are fixes and cleanups all over the
place as usual and a traditional ACPICA update to a recent upstream
release.
As far as the fixes go, the ACPI LPSS (Low-power Subsystem) driver
for Intel platforms should be able to handle power management of
the DMA engine correctly, the cpufreq-dt driver should interact
with the thermal subsystem in a better way and the ACPI backlight
driver should handle some more corner cases, among other things.
On top of the ACPICA update there are fixes for race conditions
in the ACPICA's interrupt handling code which might lead to some
random and strange looking failures on some systems.
In the cleanups department the most visible part is the series
of commits targeted at getting rid of the CONFIG_PM_RUNTIME
configuration option. That was triggered by a discussion
regarding the generic power domains code during which we realized
that trying to support certain combinations of PM config options
was painful and not really worth it, because nobody would use them

CONFIG_PM_SLEEP select CONFIG_PM_RUNTIME and that lead to the
conclusion that the latter became redundant and CONFIG_PM could
be used instead of it. The material here makes that replacement

- ACPI core fix for an RCU-related issue in the ioremap() regions
management code that slowed down significantly after CPUs had been
allowed to enter idle states even if they'd had RCU callbakcs
queued and triggered some problems in certain proprietary graphics
driver (and elsewhere). The fix replaces synchronize_rcu() in that
code with synchronize_rcu_expedited() which makes the issue go

- ACPI LPSS (Low-Power Subsystem) driver fix to handle power
management of the DMA engine included into the LPSS correctly. The
problem is that the DMA engine doesn't have ACPI PM support of its
own and it simply is turned off when the last LPSS device having
ACPI PM support goes into D3cold. To work around that, the PM
domain used by the ACPI LPSS driver is redesigned so at least one
device with ACPI PM support will be on as long as the DMA engine is

systems where it doesn't work and where it was used by default by

- New cpufreq driver callback (->ready) to be executed when the
cpufreq core is ready to use a given policy object and cpufreq-dt
driver modification to use that callback for cooling device

This makes CMA memory area size zero for x86 in default configuration
(doesn't change on the other architectures). If default CMA size is
zero, DMA_CMA is disabled. It can be enabled by passing cma= to the
kernel.
This makes less impact on x86. Because there is no mainline driver that
requires it for x86, and Peter Hurley reported the performance
regression, as this is trying to drive _all_ dma mapping allocations
through a _very_ small window.

Get the 'device_opp' allocation code into a separate routine to keep only the
necessary part in dev_pm_opp_add_dynamic().
Also do s/sizeof(struct device_opp)/sizeof(*dev_opp) and remove the print
message on kzalloc() failure as checkpatch warns for that.
