Chang-An Chen 3f2552f7e9 timers/sched_clock: Prevent generic sched_clock wrap caused by tick_freeze()
tick_freeze() introduced by suspend-to-idle in commit 124cf9117c ("PM /
sleep: Make it possible to quiesce timers during suspend-to-idle") uses
timekeeping_suspend() instead of syscore_suspend() during
suspend-to-idle. As a consequence generic sched_clock will keep going
because sched_clock_suspend() and sched_clock_resume() are not invoked
during suspend-to-idle which can result in a generic sched_clock wrap.

On a ARM system with suspend-to-idle enabled, sched_clock is registered
as "56 bits at 13MHz, resolution 76ns, wraps every 4398046511101ns", which
means the real wrapping duration is 8796093022202ns.

sched_clock was not stopped during suspend-to-idle, and sched_clock_poll
hrtimer was not expired because timekeeping_suspend() was invoked during
suspend-to-idle. It makes sched_clock wrap at kernel time 8796s.

To prevent this, invoke sched_clock_suspend() and sched_clock_resume() in
tick_freeze() together with timekeeping_suspend() and timekeeping_resume().

Ondrej Mosnacek 7e8eda734d ntp: Audit NTP parameters adjustment
Emit an audit record every time selected NTP parameters are modified
from userspace (via adjtimex(2) or clock_adjtime(2)). These parameters
may be used to indirectly change system clock, and thus their
modifications should be audited.

Such events will now generate records of type AUDIT_TIME_ADJNTPVAL
containing the following fields:
  - op -- which value was adjusted:
    - offset -- corresponding to the time_offset variable
    - freq   -- corresponding to the time_freq variable
    - status -- corresponding to the time_status variable
    - adjust -- corresponding to the time_adjust variable
    - tick   -- corresponding to the tick_usec variable
    - tai    -- corresponding to the timekeeping's TAI offset
  - old -- the old value
  - new -- the new value

Example records:

type=TIME_ADJNTPVAL msg=audit(1530616044.507:7): op=status old=64 new=8256
type=TIME_ADJNTPVAL msg=audit(1530616044.511:11): op=freq old=0 new=49180377088000

The records of this type will be associated with the corresponding
syscall records.

An overview of parameter changes that can be done via do_adjtimex()
(based on information from Miroslav Lichvar) and whether they are
audited:
  __timekeeping_set_tai_offset() -- sets the offset from the
                                    International Atomic Time
                                    (AUDITED)
  NTP variables:
    time_offset -- can adjust the clock by up to 0.5 seconds per call
                   and also speed it up or slow down by up to about
                   0.05% (43 seconds per day) (AUDITED)
    time_freq -- can speed up or slow down by up to about 0.05%
                 (AUDITED)
    time_status -- can insert/delete leap seconds and it also enables/
                   disables synchronization of the hardware real-time
                   clock (AUDITED)
    time_maxerror, time_esterror -- change error estimates used to
                                    inform userspace applications
                                    (NOT AUDITED)
    time_constant -- controls the speed of the clock adjustments that
                     are made when time_offset is set (NOT AUDITED)
    time_adjust -- can temporarily speed up or slow down the clock by up
                   to 0.05% (AUDITED)
    tick_usec -- a more extreme version of time_freq; can speed up or
                 slow down the clock by up to 10% (AUDITED)

Ondrej Mosnacek 2d87a0674b timekeeping: Audit clock adjustments
Emit an audit record whenever the system clock is changed (i.e. shifted
by a non-zero offset) by a syscall from userspace. The syscalls than can
(at the time of writing) trigger such record are:
  - settimeofday(2), stime(2), clock_settime(2) -- via
    do_settimeofday64()
  - adjtimex(2), clock_adjtime(2) -- via do_adjtimex()

The new records have type AUDIT_TIME_INJOFFSET and contain the following
fields:
  - sec -- the 'seconds' part of the offset
  - nsec -- the 'nanoseconds' part of the offset

Example record (time was shifted backwards by ~15.875 seconds):

type=TIME_INJOFFSET msg=audit(1530616049.652:13): sec=-16 nsec=124887145

The records of this type will be associated with the corresponding
syscall records.

Ulf Hansson 6f9b83ac87 cpuidle: Export the next timer expiration for CPUs
To be able to predict the sleep duration for a CPU entering idle, it
is essential to know the expiration time of the next timer.  Both the
teo and the menu cpuidle governors already use this information for
CPU idle state selection.

Moving forward, a similar prediction needs to be made for a group of
idle CPUs rather than for a single one and the following changes
implement a new genpd governor for that purpose.

In order to support that feature, add a new function called
tick_nohz_get_next_hrtimer() that will return the next hrtimer
expiration time of a given CPU to be invoked after deciding
whether or not to stop the scheduler tick on that CPU.

Make the cpuidle core call tick_nohz_get_next_hrtimer() right
before invoking the ->enter() callback provided by the cpuidle
driver for the given state and store its return value in the
per-CPU struct cpuidle_device, so as to make it available to code
outside of cpuidle.

Note that at the point when cpuidle calls tick_nohz_get_next_hrtimer(),
the governor's ->select() callback has already returned and indicated
whether or not the tick should be stopped, so in fact the value
returned by tick_nohz_get_next_hrtimer() always is the next hrtimer
expiration time for the given CPU, possibly including the tick (if
it hasn't been stopped).

Thomas Gleixner 7a8e61f847 timekeeping: Force upper bound for setting CLOCK_REALTIME
Several people reported testing failures after setting CLOCK_REALTIME close
to the limits of the kernel internal representation in nanoseconds,
i.e. year 2262.

The failures are exposed in subsequent operations, i.e. when arming timers
or when the advancing CLOCK_MONOTONIC makes the calculation of
CLOCK_REALTIME overflow into negative space.

Now people start to paper over the underlying problem by clamping
calculations to the valid range, but that's just wrong because such
workarounds will prevent detection of real issues as well.

It is reasonable to force an upper bound for the various methods of setting
CLOCK_REALTIME. Year 2262 is the absolute upper bound. Assume a maximum
uptime of 30 years which is plenty enough even for esoteric embedded
systems. That results in an upper bound of year 2232 for setting the time.

Once that limit is reached in reality this limit is only a small part of
the problem space. But until then this stops people from trying to paper
over the problem at the wrong places.

Anna-Maria Gleixner f28d3d5346 timer/trace: Improve timer tracing
Timers are added to the timer wheel off by one. This is required in
case a timer is queued directly before incrementing jiffies to prevent
early timer expiry.

When reading a timer trace and relying only on the expiry time of the timer
in the timer_start trace point and on the now in the timer_expiry_entry
trace point, it seems that the timer fires late. With the current
timer_expiry_entry trace point information only now=jiffies is printed but
not the value of base->clk. This makes it impossible to draw a conclusion
to the index of base->clk and makes it impossible to examine timer problems
without additional trace points.

Therefore add the base->clk value to the timer_expire_entry trace
point, to be able to calculate the index the timer base is located at
during collecting expired timers.

Anna-Maria Gleixner dc1e7dc5ac timer: Move trace point to get proper index
When placing the timer_start trace point before the timer wheel bucket
index is calculated, the index information in the trace point is useless.

It is not possible to simply move the debug_activate() call after the index
calculation, because debug_object_activate() needs to be called before
touching the object.

Therefore split debug_activate() and move the trace point into
enqueue_timer() after the new index has been calculated. The
debug_object_activate() call remains at the original place.

Thomas Gleixner 1b72d43237 tick: Remove outgoing CPU from broadcast masks
Valentin reported that unplugging a CPU occasionally results in a warning
in the tick broadcast code which is triggered when an offline CPU is in the
broadcast mask.

This happens because the outgoing CPU is not removing itself from the
broadcast masks, especially not from the broadcast_force_mask. The removal
happens on the control CPU after the outgoing CPU is dead. It's a long
standing issue, but the warning is harmless.

Rework the hotplug mechanism so that the outgoing CPU removes itself from
the broadcast masks after disabling interrupts and removing itself from the
online mask.

Rasmus Villemoes e1e41b6ce5 timekeeping: Consistently use unsigned int for seqcount snapshot
The timekeeping code uses a random mix of "unsigned long" and "unsigned
int" for the seqcount snapshots (ratio 14:12). Since the seqlock.h API is
entirely based on unsigned int, use that throughout.

Arnd Bergmann d33c577ccc y2038: rename old time and utime syscalls
The time, stime, utime, utimes, and futimesat system calls are only
used on older architectures, and we do not provide y2038 safe variants
of them, as they are replaced by clock_gettime64, clock_settime64,
and utimensat_time64.

However, for consistency it seems better to have the 32-bit architectures
that still use them call the "time32" entry points (leaving the
traditional handlers for the 64-bit architectures), like we do for system
calls that now require two versions.

Note: We used to always define __ARCH_WANT_SYS_TIME and
__ARCH_WANT_SYS_UTIME and only set __ARCH_WANT_COMPAT_SYS_TIME and
__ARCH_WANT_SYS_UTIME32 for compat mode on 64-bit kernels. Now this is
reversed: only 64-bit architectures set __ARCH_WANT_SYS_TIME/UTIME, while
we need __ARCH_WANT_SYS_TIME32/UTIME32 for 32-bit architectures and compat
mode. The resulting asm/unistd.h changes look a bit counterintuitive.

This is only a cleanup patch and it should not change any behavior.

Arnd Bergmann 8dabe7245b y2038: syscalls: rename y2038 compat syscalls
A lot of system calls that pass a time_t somewhere have an implementation
using a COMPAT_SYSCALL_DEFINEx() on 64-bit architectures, and have
been reworked so that this implementation can now be used on 32-bit
architectures as well.

The missing step is to redefine them using the regular SYSCALL_DEFINEx()
to get them out of the compat namespace and make it possible to build them
on 32-bit architectures.

Any system call that ends in 'time' gets a '32' suffix on its name for
that version, while the others get a '_time32' suffix, to distinguish
them from the normal version, which takes a 64-bit time argument in the
future.

In this step, only 64-bit architectures are changed, doing this rename
first lets us avoid touching the 32-bit architectures twice.

Replace all uses of timex with y2038 safe __kernel_timex.

Note that struct __kernel_timex is an ABI interface definition.
We could define a new structure based on __kernel_timex that

a few defined struct timex interfaces and such a structure would
be exactly the same as struct timex.

Arnd Bergmann 1a596398a3 sparc64: add custom adjtimex/clock_adjtime functions
sparc64 is the only architecture on Linux that has a 'timeval'
definition with a 32-bit tv_usec but a 64-bit tv_sec. This causes
problems for sparc32 compat mode when we convert it to use the
new __kernel_timex type that has the same layout as all other
64-bit architectures.

To avoid adding sparc64 specific code into the generic adjtimex
implementation, this adds a wrapper in the sparc64 system call handling
that converts the sparc64 'timex' into the new '__kernel_timex'.

At this point, the two structures are defined to be identical,
but that will change in the next step once we convert sparc32.

Arnd Bergmann 4d5f007eed time: make adjtime compat handling available for 32 bit
We want to reuse the compat_timex handling on 32-bit architectures the
same way we are using the compat handling for timespec when moving to
64-bit time_t.

Move all definitions related to compat_timex out of the compat code
into the normal timekeeping code, along with a rename to old_timex32,
corresponding to the timespec/timeval structures, and make it controlled
by CONFIG_COMPAT_32BIT_TIME, which 32-bit architectures will then select.

Paul E. McKenney c98cac603f rcu: Rename rcu_check_callbacks() to rcu_sched_clock_irq()
The name rcu_check_callbacks() arguably made sense back in the early
2000s when RCU was quite a bit simpler than it is today, but it has
become quite misleading, especially with the advent of dyntick-idle
and NO_HZ_FULL.  The rcu_check_callbacks() function is RCU's hook into
the scheduling-clock interrupt, and is now but one of many ways that
callbacks get promoted to invocable state.

This commit therefore changes the name to rcu_sched_clock_irq(),
which is the same number of characters and clearly indicates this
function's relation to the rest of the Linux kernel.  In addition, for
the sake of consistency, rcu_flavor_check_callbacks() is also renamed
to rcu_flavor_sched_clock_irq().

While in the area, the header comments for both functions are reworked.

Thomas Gleixner 93ad0fc088 posix-cpu-timers: Unbreak timer rearming
The recent commit which prevented a division by 0 issue in the alarm timer
code broke posix CPU timers as an unwanted side effect.

The reason is that the common rearm code checks for timer->it_interval
being 0 now. What went unnoticed is that the posix cpu timer setup does not
initialize timer->it_interval as it stores the interval in CPU timer
specific storage. The reason for the separate storage is historical as the
posix CPU timers always had a 64bit nanoseconds representation internally
while timer->it_interval is type ktime_t which used to be a modified
timespec representation on 32bit machines.

Instead of reverting the offending commit and fixing the alarmtimer issue
in the alarmtimer code, store the interval in timer->it_interval at CPU
timer setup time so the common code check works. This also repairs the
existing inconistency of the posix CPU timer code which kept a single shot
timer armed despite of the interval being 0.

The separate storage can be removed in mainline, but that needs to be a
separate commit as the current one has to be backported to stable kernels.

Arnd Bergmann 437e78d3fd timekeeping: remove timespec_add/timespec_del
The last users were removed a while ago since everyone moved to ktime_t,
so we can remove the two unused interfaces for old timespec structures.

With those two gone, set_normalized_timespec() is also unused, so
remove that as well.

Thomas Gleixner 0e334db6bb posix-timers: Fix division by zero bug
The signal delivery path of posix-timers can try to rearm the timer even if
the interval is zero. That's handled for the common case (hrtimer) but not
for alarm timers. In that case the forwarding function raises a division by
zero exception.

The handling for hrtimer based posix timers is wrong because it marks the
timer as active despite the fact that it is stopped.

Move the check from common_hrtimer_rearm() to posixtimer_rearm() to cure
both issues.

tk_core.seq is initialized open coded, but that misses to initialize the
lockdep map when lockdep is enabled. Lockdep splats involving tk_core seq
consequently lack a name and are hard to read.

Use the proper initializer which takes care of the lockdep map

Thomas Gleixner 35728b8209 time: Add SPDX license identifiers
Update the time(r) core files files with the correct SPDX license
identifier based on the license text in the file itself. The SPDX
identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the
full boiler plate text.

This work is based on a script and data from Philippe Ombredanne, Kate
Stewart and myself. The data has been created with two independent license
scanners and manual inspection.

The following files do not contain any direct license information and have
been omitted from the big initial SPDX changes:

  timeconst.bc: The .bc files were not touched
  time.c, timer.c, timekeeping.c: Licence was deduced from EXPORT_SYMBOL_GPL

As those files do not contain direct license references they fall under the
project license, i.e. GPL V2 only.

Juri Lelli e6a2d72c10 posix-cpu-timers: Remove useless call to check_dl_overrun()
check_dl_overrun() is used to send a SIGXCPU to users that asked to be
informed when a SCHED_DEADLINE runtime overruns occur.

The function is called by check_thread_timers() already, so the call in
check_process_timers() is redundant/wrong (even though harmless).

Remove it.

 "I have been slowly sorting out siginfo and this is the culmination of
  that work.

  The primary result is in several ways the signal infrastructure has
  been made less error prone. The code has been updated so that manually
  specifying SEND_SIG_FORCED is never necessary. The conversion to the
  new siginfo sending functions is now complete, which makes it
  difficult to send a signal without filling in the proper siginfo
  fields.

  At the tail end of the patchset comes the optimization of decreasing
  the size of struct siginfo in the kernel from 128 bytes to about 48
  bytes on 64bit. The fundamental observation that enables this is by
  definition none of the known ways to use struct siginfo uses the extra
  bytes.

  This comes at the cost of a small user space observable difference.
  For the rare case of siginfo being injected into the kernel only what
  can be copied into kernel_siginfo is delivered to the destination, the
  rest of the bytes are set to 0. For cases where the signal and the
  si_code are known this is safe, because we know those bytes are not
  used. For cases where the signal and si_code combination is unknown
  the bits that won't fit into struct kernel_siginfo are tested to
  verify they are zero, and the send fails if they are not.

  I made an extensive search through userspace code and I could not find
  anything that would break because of the above change. If it turns out
  I did break something it will take just the revert of a single change
  to restore kernel_siginfo to the same size as userspace siginfo.

  Testing did reveal dependencies on preferring the signo passed to

Peng Hao d59e0ba194 tick/sched : Remove redundant cpu_online() check
can_stop_idle_tick() checks cpu_online() twice. The first check leaves the

Eric W. Biederman ae7795bc61 signal: Distinguish between kernel_siginfo and siginfo
Linus recently observed that if we did not worry about the padding
member in struct siginfo it is only about 48 bytes, and 48 bytes is
much nicer than 128 bytes for allocating on the stack and copying
around in the kernel.

The obvious thing of only adding the padding when userspace is
including siginfo.h won't work as there are sigframe definitions in
the kernel that embed struct siginfo.

So split siginfo in two; kernel_siginfo and siginfo.  Keeping the
traditional name for the userspace definition.  While the version that
is used internally to the kernel and ultimately will not be padded to
128 bytes is called kernel_siginfo.

The definition of struct kernel_siginfo I have put in include/signal_types.h

A set of buildtime checks has been added to verify the two structures have
the same field offsets.

To make it easy to verify the change kernel_siginfo retains the same
size as siginfo.  The reduction in size comes in a following change.

Peter Zijlstra e2c631ba75 clocksource: Revert "Remove kthread"
I turns out that the silly spawn kthread from worker was actually needed.

clocksource_watchdog_kthread() cannot be called directly from
clocksource_watchdog_work(), because clocksource_select() calls
timekeeping_notify() which uses stop_machine(). One cannot use
stop_machine() from a workqueue() due lock inversions wrt CPU hotplug.

Revert the patch but add a comment that explain why we jump through such
apparently silly hoops.

kbuild test robot 743f5cdb6c y2038: __get_old_timespec32() can be static
The kbuild test robot reports two new warnings with the previous
patch:

 kernel/time/time.c:866:5: sparse: symbol '__get_old_timespec32' was not declared. Should it be static?
 kernel/time/time.c:882:5: sparse: symbol '__put_old_timespec32' was not declared. Should it be static?

These are actually older bugs, but came up now after the
symbol got renamed. Fortunately, commit afef05cf23 ("time:
Enable get/put_compat_itimerspec64 always") makes the two functions
(__compat_get_timespec64/__compat_get_timespec64) local to time.c already,
so we can mark them as 'static'.

Arnd Bergmann 9afc5eee65 y2038: globally rename compat_time to old_time32
Christoph Hellwig suggested a slightly different path for handling
backwards compatibility with the 32-bit time_t based system calls:

Rather than simply reusing the compat_sys_* entry points on 32-bit
architectures unchanged, we get rid of those entry points and the
compat_time types by renaming them to something that makes more sense
on 32-bit architectures (which don't have a compat mode otherwise),
and then share the entry points under the new name with the 64-bit
architectures that use them for implementing the compatibility.

The following types and interfaces are renamed here, and moved
from linux/compat_time.h to linux/time32.h:

still debating what the new interface will look like, and whether we
will need a replacement at all.

This also doesn't change the names of the syscall entry points, which can
be done more easily when we actually switch over the 32-bit architectures
to use them, at that point we need to change COMPAT_SYSCALL_DEFINEx to
SYSCALL_DEFINEx with a new name, e.g. with a _time32 suffix.

Helge Deller 93cb8e20d5 parisc: Drop architecture-specific ENOTSUP define
parisc is the only Linux architecture which has defined a value for ENOTSUP.
All other architectures #define ENOTSUP as EOPNOTSUPP in their libc headers.

Having an own value for ENOTSUP which is different than EOPNOTSUPP often gives
problems with userspace programs which expect both to be the same.  One such
example is a build error in the libuv package, as can be seen in
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=900237.

Since we dropped HP-UX support, there is no real benefit in keeping an own
value for ENOTSUP. This patch drops the parisc value for ENOTSUP from the
kernel sources. glibc needs no patch, it reuses the exported headers.

Sudeep Holla fbfa926008 clockevents: Warn if cpu_all_mask is used as cpumask
Using cpu_all_mask in clockevents cpumask may result in issues while
comparing multiple clockevent devices to choose the preferred one.

On one of the platforms with 2 system (i.e. non per-CPU) timers with
different ratings, having cpu_all_mask for one of the device resulted in a
boot hang due to a endless loop in clockevents_notify_released() as both
were clocksources were selected as preferred.

In order to prevent such issues in the future, warn if any clockevent
driver sets cpu_all_mask as it's cpumask and just override it to use
cpu_possible_mask. All the existing occurrences of cpu_all_mask are already
replaced with cpu_possible_mask.

Sudeep Holla 234b3840d7 tick/broadcast-hrtimer: Use cpu_possible_mask for ce_broadcast_hrtimer
This is the last instance of cpu_all_mask usage in the core framework.

Replace it with cpu_possible_mask like all other instances in the
clockevent drivers. This makes it possible to add a warning in the core

Gaurav Kohli 363e934d88 timers: Clear timer_base::must_forward_clk with timer_base::lock held
timer_base::must_forward_clock is indicating that the base clock might be
stale due to a long idle sleep.

The forwarding of the base clock takes place in the timer softirq or when a
timer is enqueued to a base which is idle. If the enqueue of timer to an
idle base happens from a remote CPU, then the following race can happen:

  CPU0					CPU1
  run_timer_softirq			mod_timer

					base = lock_timer_base(timer);
  base->must_forward_clk = false
					if (base->must_forward_clk)
				       	    forward(base); -> skipped

					enqueue_timer(base, timer, idx);
					-> idx is calculated high due to
					   stale base
					unlock_timer_base(timer);
  base = lock_timer_base(timer);
  forward(base);

The root cause is that timer_base::must_forward_clk is cleared outside the
timer_base::lock held region, so the remote queuing CPU observes it as
cleared, but the base clock is still stale. This can cause large
granularity values for timers, i.e. the accuracy of the expiry time
suffers.

Prevent this by clearing the flag with timer_base::lock held, so that the
forwarding takes place before the cleared flag is observable by a remote
CPU.

local_timer_softirq_pending() checks whether the timer softirq is
pending with: local_softirq_pending() & TIMER_SOFTIRQ.

This is wrong because TIMER_SOFTIRQ is the softirq number and not a
bitmask. So the test checks for the wrong bit.

Use BIT(TIMER_SOFTIRQ) instead.

Eric W. Biederman 24122c7f49 signal: Pass pid and pid type into send_sigqueue
Make the code more maintainable by performing more of the signal
related work in send_sigqueue.

A quick inspection of do_timer_create will show that this code path
does not lookup a thread group by a thread's pid.  Making it safe
to find the task pointed to by it_pid with "pid_task(it_pid, type)";

This supports the changes needed in fork to tell if a signal was sent
to a single process or a group of processes.

Having the pid to task transition in signal.c will also make it easier
to sort out races with de_thread and and the thread group leader
exiting when it comes time to address that.

Eric W. Biederman 2118e1f53f posix-timers: Noralize good_sigevent
In good_sigevent directly compute the default return value as
"task_tgid(current)".  This is exactly the same as
"task_pid(current->group_leader)" but written more clearly.

In the thread case first compute the thread's pid.  Then veify that
attached to that pid is a thread of the current thread group.

This has the net effect of making the code a little clearer, and
making it obvious that posix timers never look up a process by a the
pid of a thread.

Eric W. Biederman 6883f81aac pid: Implement PIDTYPE_TGID
Everywhere except in the pid array we distinguish between a tasks pid and
a tasks tgid (thread group id).  Even in the enumeration we want that
distinction sometimes so we have added __PIDTYPE_TGID.  With leader_pid
we almost have an implementation of PIDTYPE_TGID in struct signal_struct.

Add PIDTYPE_TGID as a first class member of the pid_type enumeration and
into the pids array.  Then remove the __PIDTYPE_TGID special case and the
leader_pid in signal_struct.

The net size increase is just an extra pointer added to struct pid and
an extra pair of pointers of an hlist_node added to task_struct.

The effect on code maintenance is the removal of a number of special
cases today and the potential to remove many more special cases as
PIDTYPE_TGID gets used to it's fullest.  The long term potential
is allowing zombie thread group leaders to exit, which will remove
a lot more special cases in the code.

Baolin Wang 39232ed5a1 time: Introduce one suspend clocksource to compensate the suspend time
On some hardware with multiple clocksources, we have coarse grained
clocksources that support the CLOCK_SOURCE_SUSPEND_NONSTOP flag, but
which are less than ideal for timekeeping whereas other clocksources
can be better candidates but halt on suspend.

Currently, the timekeeping core only supports timing suspend using
CLOCK_SOURCE_SUSPEND_NONSTOP clocksources if that clocksource is the
current clocksource for timekeeping.

As a result, some architectures try to implement read_persistent_clock64()
using those non-stop clocksources, but isn't really ideal, which will
introduce more duplicate code. To fix this, provide logic to allow a
registered SUSPEND_NONSTOP clocksource, which isn't the current
clocksource, to be used to calculate the suspend time.

Mukesh Ojha f473e5f467 time: Fix extra sleeptime injection when suspend fails
Currently, there exists a corner case assuming when there is
only one clocksource e.g RTC, and system failed to go to
suspend mode. While resume rtc_resume() injects the sleeptime
as timekeeping_rtc_skipresume() returned 'false' (default value
of sleeptime_injected) due to which we can see mismatch in
timestamps.

This issue can also come in a system where more than one
clocksource are present and very first suspend fails.

Success case:
------------
                                        {sleeptime_injected=false}
rtc_suspend() => timekeeping_suspend() => timekeeping_resume() =>

(sleeptime injected)
 rtc_resume()

Failure case:
------------
         {failure in sleep path} {sleeptime_injected=false}
rtc_suspend()     =>          rtc_resume()

{sleeptime injected again which was not required as the suspend failed}

Fix this by handling the boolean logic properly.

sched_clock_postinit() initializes a generic clock on systems where no
other clock is provided. This function may be called only after
timekeeping_init().

Rename sched_clock_postinit to generic_clock_inti() and call it from

Pavel Tatashin 4b1b7f8054 timekeeping: Default boot time offset to local_clock()
read_persistent_wall_and_boot_offset() is called during boot to read
both the persistent clock and also return the offset between the boot time
and the value of persistent clock.

Change the default boot_offset from zero to local_clock() so architectures,
that do not have a dedicated boot_clock but have early sched_clock(), such
as SPARCv9, x86, and possibly more will benefit from this change by getting
a better and more consistent estimate of the boot time without need for an
arch specific implementation.

Pavel Tatashin 3eca993740 timekeeping: Replace read_boot_clock64() with read_persistent_wall_and_boot_offset()
If architecture does not support exact boot time, it is challenging to
estimate boot time without having a reference to the current persistent
clock value. Yet, it cannot read the persistent clock time again, because
this may lead to math discrepancies with the caller of read_boot_clock64()
who have read the persistent clock at a different time.

This is why it is better to provide two values simultaneously: the
persistent clock value, and the boot time.

Replace read_boot_clock64() with:
read_persistent_wall_and_boot_offset(wall_time, boot_offset)

Where wall_time is returned by read_persistent_clock() And boot_offset is
wall_time - boot time, which defaults to 0.

Sudeep Holla 5b5ccbc2b0 Revert "tick: Prefer a lower rating device only if it's CPU local device"
This reverts commit 1332a90558.

The original issue was not because of incorrect checking of cpumask for
both new and old tick device. It was incorrectly analysed was due to the
misunderstanding of the comment and misinterpretation of the return value
from tick_check_preferred. The main issue is with the clockevent driver
that sets the cpumask to cpu_all_mask instead of cpu_possible_mask.

Miroslav Lichvar b061c7a513 timekeeping: Update multiplier when NTP frequency is set directly
When the NTP frequency is set directly from userspace using the
ADJ_FREQUENCY or ADJ_TICK timex mode, immediately update the
timekeeper's multiplier instead of waiting for the next tick.

This removes a hidden non-deterministic delay in setting of the
frequency and allows an extremely tight control of the system clock
with update rates close to or even exceeding the kernel HZ.

The update is limited to archs using modern timekeeping
(!ARCH_USES_GETTIMEOFFSET).

Thomas Gleixner 78c9c4dfbf posix-timers: Sanitize overrun handling
The posix timer overrun handling is broken because the forwarding functions
can return a huge number of overruns which does not fit in an int. As a
consequence timer_getoverrun(2) and siginfo::si_overrun can turn into
random number generators.

The k_clock::timer_forward() callbacks return a 64 bit value now. Make
k_itimer::ti_overrun[_last] 64bit as well, so the kernel internal
accounting is correct. 3Remove the temporary (int) casts.

Add a helper function which clamps the overrun value returned to user space
via timer_getoverrun(2) or siginfo::si_overrun limited to a positive value
between 0 and INT_MAX. INT_MAX is an indicator for user space that the
overrun value has been clamped.

Deepa Dinamani d0dd63a8ae time: Introduce struct __kernel_itimerspec
struct itimerspec is not y2038-safe.

Introduce a new struct __kernel_itimerspec based on the kernel internal
y2038-safe struct itimerspec64.

The definition of struct __kernel_itimerspec includes two struct
__kernel_timespec.

Since struct __kernel_timespec has the same representation in native and
compat modes, so does struct __kernel_itimerspec. This helps have a common
entry point for syscalls using struct __kernel_itimerspec.

New y2038-safe syscalls will use this new type. Since most of the new
syscalls are just an update to the native syscalls with the type update,
place the new definition under CONFIG_64BIT_TIME. This helps architectures
that do not support the above config to keep using the old definition of
struct itimerspec.

Also change the get/put_itimerspec64 to use struct__kernel_itimerspec.
This will help 32 bit architectures to use the new syscalls when
architectures select CONFIG_64BIT_TIME.

Geert Uytterhoeven abcbcb80cd time: Make sure jiffies_to_msecs() preserves non-zero time periods
For the common cases where 1000 is a multiple of HZ, or HZ is a multiple of
1000, jiffies_to_msecs() never returns zero when passed a non-zero time
period.

However, if HZ > 1000 and not an integer multiple of 1000 (e.g. 1024 or
1200, as used on alpha and DECstation), jiffies_to_msecs() may return zero
for small non-zero time periods.  This may break code that relies on
receiving back a non-zero value.

jiffies_to_usecs() does not need such a fix: one jiffy can only be less
than one µs if HZ > 1000000, and such large values of HZ are already
rejected at build time, twice:

  - include/linux/jiffies.h does #error if HZ >= 12288,
  - kernel/time/time.c has BUILD_BUG_ON(HZ > USEC_PER_SEC).

Broken since forever.

Both get_seconds() and do_gettimeofday() are deprecated. Change the time()
implementation to use the replacement function instead.

Obviously the system call will still overflow in 2038, but this gets us
closer to removing the old helper functions.

Sebastian Andrzej Siewior c60c32a577 posix-cpu-timers: Remove lockdep_assert_irqs_disabled()
The lockdep_assert_irqs_disabled() was a BUG_ON() statement in the
beginning and it was added just before the "spin_lock(siglock)"
statement to ensure this lock was taken with disabled interrupts.

This is no longer the case: the siglock is acquired via
lock_task_sighand() and this function already disables the interrupts.
The lock is also acquired before this "lockdep_assert_irqs_disabled" so
it is best to remove it.

Thomas Gleixner c1a957d170 PM / suspend: Prevent might sleep splats
timekeeping suspend/resume calls read_persistent_clock() which takes
rtc_lock. That results in might sleep warnings because at that point
we run with interrupts disabled.

We cannot convert rtc_lock to a raw spinlock as that would trigger
other might sleep warnings.

As a workaround we disable the might sleep warnings by setting
system_state to SYSTEM_SUSPEND before calling sysdev_suspend() and
restoring it to SYSTEM_RUNNING afer sysdev_resume(). There is no lock
contention because hibernate / suspend to RAM is single-CPU at this
point.

In s2idle's case the system_state is set to SYSTEM_SUSPEND before
timekeeping_suspend() which is invoked by the last CPU. In the resume
case it set back to SYSTEM_RUNNING after timekeeping_resume() which is
invoked by the first CPU in the resume case. The other CPUs will block
on tick_freeze_lock.

Arnd Bergmann b9ff604cff timekeeping: Add ktime_get_coarse_with_offset
I have run into a couple of drivers using current_kernel_time()
suffering from the y2038 problem, and they could be converted
to using ktime_t, but don't have interfaces that skip the nanosecond
calculation at the moment.

This introduces ktime_get_coarse_with_offset() as a simpler
variant of ktime_get_with_offset(), and adds wrappers for the
three time domains we support with the existing function.

Arnd Bergmann fb7fcc96a8 timekeeping: Standardize on ktime_get_*() naming
The current_kernel_time64, get_monotonic_coarse64, getrawmonotonic64,
get_monotonic_boottime64 and timekeeping_clocktai64 interfaces have
rather inconsistent naming, and they differ in the calling conventions
by passing the output either by reference or as a return value.

Rename them to ktime_get_coarse_real_ts64, ktime_get_coarse_ts64,
ktime_get_raw_ts64, ktime_get_boottime_ts64 and ktime_get_clocktai_ts64
respectively, and provide the interfaces with macros or inline
functions as needed.

In a move to make ktime_get_*() the preferred driver interface into the
timekeeping code, sanitizes ktime_get_real_ts64() to be a proper exported
symbol rather than an alias for getnstimeofday64().

The internal __getnstimeofday64() is no longer used, so remove that
and merge it into ktime_get_real_ts64().

Arnd Bergmann 4f0fad9a60 timekeeping: Remove timespec64 hack
At this point, we have converted most of the kernel to use timespec64
consistently in place of timespec, so it seems it's time to make
timespec64 the native structure and define timespec in terms of that
one on 64-bit architectures.

Starting with gcc-5, the compiler can completely optimize away the
timespec_to_timespec64 and timespec64_to_timespec functions on 64-bit
architectures. With older compilers, we introduce a couple of extra
copies of local variables, but those are easily avoided by using
the timespec64 based interfaces consistently, as we do in most of the
important code paths already.

The main upside of removing the hack is that printing the tv_sec
field of a timespec64 structure can now use the %lld format
string on all architectures without a cast to time64_t. Without
this patch, the field is a 'long' type and would have to be printed
using %ld on 64-bit architectures.

Dexuan Cui 5596fe3449 tick/broadcast: Use for_each_cpu() specially on UP kernels
for_each_cpu() unintuitively reports CPU0 as set independent of the actual
cpumask content on UP kernels. This causes an unexpected PIT interrupt
storm on a UP kernel running in an SMP virtual machine on Hyper-V, and as
a result, the virtual machine can suffer from a strange random delay of 1~20
minutes during boot-up, and sometimes it can hang forever.

Protect if by checking whether the cpumask is empty before entering the
for_each_cpu() loop.

Sudeep Holla 1332a90558 tick: Prefer a lower rating device only if it's CPU local device
Checking the equality of cpumask for both new and old tick device doesn't
ensure that it's CPU local device. This will cause issue if a low rating
clockevent tick device is registered first followed by the registration
of higher rating clockevent tick device.

In such case, clockevents_released list will never get emptied as both
the devices get selected as preferred one and we will loop forever in
clockevents_notify_released.

Peter Zijlstra 2aae7bcfa4 clocksource: Allow clocksource_mark_unstable() on unregistered clocksources
Because of how the code flips between tsc-early and tsc clocksources
it might need to mark one or both unstable. The current code in
mark_tsc_unstable() only worked because previously it registered the
tsc clocksource once and then never touched it.

Since it now unregisters the tsc-early clocksource, it needs to know
if a clocksource got unregistered and the current cs->mult test
doesn't work for that. Instead use list_empty(&cs->list) to test for
registration.

Furthermore, since clocksource_mark_unstable() needs to place the cs
on the wd_list, it links the cs->list and cs->wd_list serialization.
It must not see a clocsource registered (!empty cs->list) but already
past dequeue_watchdog(). So place {en,de}queue{,_watchdog}() under the
same lock.

Provided cs->list is initialized to empty, this then allows us to
unconditionally use clocksource_mark_unstable(), regardless of the
registration state.

As stated in the pull request for the unification of CLOCK_MONOTONIC and
CLOCK_BOOTTIME, it was clear that we might have to revert the change.

As reported by several folks systemd and other applications rely on the
documented behaviour of CLOCK_MONOTONIC on Linux and break with the above
changes. After resume daemons time out and other timeout related issues are
observed. Rafael compiled this list:

* systemd kills daemons on resume, after >WatchdogSec seconds
  of suspending (Genki Sky).  [Verified that that's because systemd uses
  CLOCK_MONOTONIC and expects it to not include the suspend time.]

* systemd-journald misbehaves after resume:
  systemd-journald[7266]: File /var/log/journal/016627c3c4784cd4812d4b7e96a34226/system.journal
corrupted or uncleanly shut down, renaming and replacing.
  (Mike Galbraith).

* NetworkManager reports "networking disabled" and networking is broken
  after resume 50% of the time (Pavel).  [May be because of systemd.]

* MATE desktop dims the display and starts the screensaver right after
  system resume (Pavel).

* Full system hang during resume (me).  [May be due to systemd or NM or both.]

That happens on debian and open suse systems.

It's sad, that these problems were neither catched in -next nor by those
folks who expressed interest in this change.

did great debugging, which provided enough context to decode the problem.

ts->sched_timer is queued and queue->next is pointing to it, but then
ts->sched_timer.expires is modified.

This not only corrupts the ordering of the timerqueue RB tree, it also
makes CPU2 see the new expiry time of timerqueue->next->expires when
checking whether timerqueue->next needs to be updated. So CPU2 sees that
the rdma timer is earlier than timerqueue->next and sets the rdma timer as
new next.

Depending on whether it had also seen the new time at RB tree enqueue, it
might have queued the rdma timer at the wrong place and then after removing
the sched_timer the RB tree is completely hosed.

The problem was introduced with a commit which tried to solve inconsistency
between the hrtimer in the tick_sched data and the underlying hardware
clockevent. It split out hrtimer_set_expires() to store the new tick time
in both the NOHZ and the NOHZ + HIGHRES case, but missed the fact that in
the NOHZ + HIGHRES case the hrtimer might still be queued.

Use hrtimer_start(timer, tick...) for the NOHZ + HIGHRES case which sets
timer->expires after canceling the timer and move the hrtimer_set_expires()
invocation into the NOHZ only code path which is not affected as it merily
uses the hrtimer as next event storage so code pathes can be shared with
the NOHZ + HIGHRES case.

Deepa Dinamani 01909974b4 time: Change nanosleep to safe __kernel_* types
Change over clock_nanosleep syscalls to use y2038 safe
__kernel_timespec times. This will enable changing over
of these syscalls to use new y2038 safe syscalls when
the architectures define the CONFIG_64BIT_TIME.

Note that nanosleep syscall is deprecated and does not have a
plan for making it y2038 safe. But, the syscall should work as
before on 64 bit machines and on 32 bit machines, the syscall
works correctly until y2038 as before using the existing compat
syscall version. There is no new syscall for supporting 64 bit
time_t on 32 bit architectures.

Deepa Dinamani ea2ce8f351 time: Fix get_timespec64() for y2038 safe compat interfaces
get/put_timespec64() interfaces will eventually be used for
conversions between the new y2038 safe struct __kernel_timespec
and struct timespec64.

The new y2038 safe syscalls have a common entry for native
and compat interfaces.
On compat interfaces, the high order bits of nanoseconds
should be zeroed out. This is because the application code
or the libc do not guarantee zeroing of these. If used without
zeroing, kernel might be at risk of using timespec values
incorrectly.

Note that clearing of bits is dependent on CONFIG_64BIT_TIME
for now. This is until COMPAT_USE_64BIT_TIME has been handled
correctly. x86 will be the first architecture that will use the
CONFIG_64BIT_TIME.

clock_nanosleep. But, there is no plan to provide y2038 safe solution
for nanosleep.

Laura Abbott c3bca5d450 posix-cpu-timers: Ensure set_process_cpu_timer is always evaluated
Commit a9445e47d8 ("posix-cpu-timers: Make set_process_cpu_timer()
more robust") moved the check into the 'if' statement. Unfortunately,
it did so on the right side of an && which means that it may get short
circuited and never evaluated. This is easily reproduced with:

$ cat loop.c
void main() {
  struct rlimit res;
  /* set the CPU time limit */
  getrlimit(RLIMIT_CPU,&res);
  res.rlim_cur = 2;
  res.rlim_max = 2;
  setrlimit(RLIMIT_CPU,&res);

  while (1);
}

Which will hang forever instead of being killed. Fix this by pulling the
evaluation out of the if statement but checking the return value instead.

If the tick isn't stopped, the target residency of the state selected
by the menu governor may be greater than the actual time to the next
tick and that means lost energy.

To avoid that, make tick_nohz_get_sleep_length() return the current
time to the next event (before stopping the tick) in addition to the
estimated one via an extra pointer argument and make menu_select()
use that value to refine the state selection when necessary.

Rafael J. Wysocki 554c8aa8ec sched: idle: Select idle state before stopping the tick
In order to address the issue with short idle duration predictions
by the idle governor after the scheduler tick has been stopped,
reorder the code in cpuidle_idle_call() so that the governor idle
state selection runs before tick_nohz_idle_go_idle() and use the
"nohz" hint returned by cpuidle_select() to decide whether or not
to stop the tick.

This isn't straightforward, because menu_select() invokes
tick_nohz_get_sleep_length() to get the time to the next timer
event and the number returned by the latter comes from
__tick_nohz_idle_stop_tick().  Fortunately, however, it is possible
to compute that number without actually stopping the tick and with
the help of the existing code.

Namely, tick_nohz_get_sleep_length() can be made call
tick_nohz_next_event(), introduced earlier, to get the time to the
next non-highres timer event.  If that happens, tick_nohz_next_event()
need not be called by __tick_nohz_idle_stop_tick() again.

If it turns out that the scheduler tick cannot be stopped going
forward or the next timer event is too close for the tick to be
stopped, tick_nohz_get_sleep_length() can simply return the time to
the next event currently programmed into the corresponding clock
event device.

In addition to knowing the return value of tick_nohz_next_event(),
however, tick_nohz_get_sleep_length() needs to know the time to the
next highres timer event, but with the scheduler tick timer excluded,
which can be computed with the help of hrtimer_get_next_event().

That minimum of that number and the tick_nohz_next_event() return
value is the total time to the next timer event with the assumption
that the tick will be stopped.  It can be returned to the idle
governor which can use it for predicting idle duration (under the
assumption that the tick will be stopped) and deciding whether or
not it makes sense to stop the tick before putting the CPU into the
selected idle state.

With the above, the sleep_length field in struct tick_sched is not
necessary any more, so drop it.

path after subsequent changes.

Update the former callers of tick_nohz_stop_sched_tick() to use
the new routines, tick_nohz_next_event() and tick_nohz_stop_tick(),
instead of it and move the updates of the sleep_length field in
struct tick_sched into __tick_nohz_idle_stop_tick() as it doesn't
need to be updated anywhere else.

There should be no intentional visible changes in functionality
resulting from this change.

Rafael J. Wysocki 45f1ff59e2 cpuidle: Return nohz hint from cpuidle_select()
Add a new pointer argument to cpuidle_select() and to the ->select
cpuidle governor callback to allow a boolean value indicating
whether or not the tick should be stopped before entering the
selected state to be returned from there.

Make the ladder governor ignore that pointer (to preserve its
current behavior) and make the menu governor return 'false" through
it if:
 (1) the idle exit latency is constrained at 0, or
 (2) the selected state is a polling one, or
 (3) the expected idle period duration is within the tick period
     range.

In addition to that, the correction factor computations in the menu
governor need to take the possibility that the tick may not be
stopped into account to avoid artificially small correction factor
values.  To that end, add a mechanism to record tick wakeups, as
suggested by Peter Zijlstra, and use it to modify the menu_update()
behavior when tick wakeup occurs.  Namely, if the CPU is woken up by
the tick and the return value of tick_nohz_get_sleep_length() is not
within the tick boundary, the predicted idle duration is likely too
short, so make menu_update() try to compensate for that by updating
the governor statistics as though the CPU was idle for a long time.

Since the value returned through the new argument pointer of
cpuidle_select() is not used by its caller yet, this change by
itself is not expected to alter the functionality of the code.
