scsi: qla2xxx: add ring buffer for tracing debug logs
Having this log in a ring buffer helps to diagnose qla2xxx driver and firmware issues instead of having to reproduce the problem with extended_logging enabled. This saves cycles and helps when it is hard to reproduce problem. sched/pelt: Add support to track thermal pressure
Extrapolating on the existing framework to track rt/dl utilization using pelt signals, add a similar mechanism to track thermal pressure. The difference here from rt/dl utilization tracking is that, instead of tracking time spent by a CPU running a RT/DL task through util_avg, the average thermal pressure is tracked through load_avg. This is because thermal pressure signal is weighted time "delta" capacity unlike util_avg which is binary. "delta capacity" here means delta between the actual capacity of a CPU and the decreased capacity a CPU due to a thermal event. In order to track average thermal pressure, a new sched_avg variable avg_thermal is introduced. Function update_thermal_load_avg can be called to do the periodic bookkeeping (accumulate, decay and average) of the thermal pressure. gpu/trace: add a gpu total memory usage tracepoint
This change adds the below gpu memory tracepoint: gpu_mem/gpu_mem_total: track global or proc gpu memory total usages Per process tracking of total gpu memory usage in the gem layer is not appropriate and hard to implement with trivial overhead. So for the gfx device driver layer to track total gpu memory usage both globally and per process in an easy and uniform way is to integrate the tracepoint in this patch to the underlying varied implementations of gpu memory tracking system from vendors. Putting this tracepoint in the common trace events can not only help wean the gfx drivers off of debugfs but also greatly help the downstream Android gpu vendors because debugfs is to be deprecated in the upcoming Android release. Then the gpu memory tracking of both Android kernel and the upstream linux kernel can stay closely, which can benefit the whole kernel eco-system in the long term. bpf: Reliably preserve btf_trace_xxx types
btf_trace_xxx types, crucial for tp_btf BPF programs (raw tracepoint with
verifier-checked direct memory access), have to be preserved in kernel BTF to
allow verifier do its job and enforce type/memory safety. It was reported
([0]) that for kernels built with Clang current type-casting approach doesn't
preserve these types.
This patch fixes it by declaring an anonymous union for each registered
tracepoint, capturing both struct bpf_raw_event_map information, as well as
recording btf_trace_##call type reliably. Structurally, it's still the same
content as for a plain struct bpf_raw_event_map, so no other changes are
necessary.

io_uring: use poll driven retry for files that support it
Currently io_uring tries any request in a non-blocking manner, if it can, and then retries from a worker thread if we get -EAGAIN. Now that we have a new and fancy poll based retry backend, use that to retry requests if the file supports it. This means that, for example, an IORING_OP_RECVMSG on a socket no longer requires an async thread to complete the IO. If we get -EAGAIN reading from the socket in a non-blocking manner, we arm a poll handler for notification on when the socket becomes readable. When it does, the pending read is executed directly by the task again, through the io_uring task work handlers. Not only is this faster and more efficient, it also means we're not generating potentially tons of async threads that just sit and block, waiting for the IO to complete. The feature is marked with IORING_FEAT_FAST_POLL, meaning that async pollable IO is fast, and that poll<link>other_op is fast as well. Signed-off-by: Jens Axboe <axboe@kernel.dk> |

sched/numa: Distinguish between the different task_numa_migrate() failure cases
sched:sched_stick_numa is meant to fire when a task is unable to migrate to the preferred node but from the trace, it's possibile to tell the difference between "no CPU found", "migration to idle CPU failed" and "tasks could not be swapped". rcu: Add a trace event for kfree_rcu() use of kfree_bulk()
The event is given three parameters, first one is the name of RCU flavour, second one is the number of elements in array for free and last one is an address of the array holding pointers to be freed by the kfree_bulk() function. To enable the trace event your kernel has to be build with CONFIG_RCU_TRACE=y, after that it is possible to track the events using ftrace subsystem. PM: QoS: Simplify definitions of CPU latency QoS trace events
Modify the definitions of the CPU latency QoS trace events to take one argument (since PM_QOS_CPU_DMA_LATENCY is always passed as the pm_qos_class argument to them) and update the documentation of them accordingly (while at it, make it explicitly mention CPU latency QoS and relocate it after the device PM QoS trace events documentation). The pm_qos_update_request_timeout() function is not called from anywhere, so drop it along with the work member in struct pm_qos_request needed by it. memcg: fix a crash in wb_workfn when a device disappears
Without memcg, there is a one-to-one mapping between the bdi and bdi_writeback structures. In this world, things are fairly straightforward; the first thing bdi_unregister() does is to shutdown the bdi_writeback structure (or wb), and part of that writeback ensures that no other work queued against the wb, and that the wb is fully drained. With memcg, however, there is a one-to-many relationship between the bdi and bdi_writeback structures; that is, there are multiple wb objects which can all point to a single bdi. There is a refcount which prevents the bdi object from being released (and hence, unregistered). So in theory, the bdi_unregister() *should* only get called once its refcount goes to zero (bdi_put will drop the refcount, and when it is zero, release_bdi gets called, which calls bdi_unregister). Unfortunately, del_gendisk() in block/gen_hd.c never got the memo about the Brave New memcg World, and calls bdi_unregister directly. It does this without informing the file system, or the memcg code, or anything else. This causes the root wb associated with the bdi to be unregistered, but none of the memcg-specific wb's are shutdown. So when one of these wb's are woken up to do delayed work, they try to dereference their wb->bdi->dev to fetch the device name, but unfortunately bdi->dev is now NULL, thanks to the bdi_unregister() called by del_gendisk(). As a result, *boom*. Fortunately, it looks like the rest of the writeback path is perfectly happy with bdi->dev and bdi->owner being NULL, so the simplest fix is to create a bdi_dev_name() function which can handle bdi->dev being NULL. This also allows us to bulletproof the writeback tracepoints to prevent them from dereferencing a NULL pointer and crashing the kernel if one is tracing with memcg's enabled, and an iSCSI device dies or a USB storage stick is pulled. The most common way of triggering this will be hotremoval of a device while writeback with memcg enabled is going on. It was triggering several times a day in a heavily loaded production environment. f2fs-for-5.6
In this series, we've implemented transparent compression experimentally. It supports LZO and LZ4, but will add more later as we investigate in the field more. At this point, the feature doesn't expose compressed space to user directly in order to guarantee potential data updates later to the space. Instead, the main goal is to reduce data writes to flash disk as much as possible, resulting in extending disk life time as well as relaxing IO congestion. Alternatively, we're also considering to add ioctl() to reclaim compressed space and show it to user after putting the immutable bit. Enhancement: - add compression support - avoid unnecessary locks in quota ops - harden power-cut scenario for zoned block devices - use private bio_set to avoid IO congestion - replace GC mutex with rwsem to serialize callers Bug fix: - fix dentry consistency and memory corruption in rename()'s error case - fix wrong swap extent reports - fix casefolding bugs - change lock coverage to avoid deadlock - avoid GFP_KERNEL under f2fs_lock_op And, we've cleaned up sysfs entries to prepare no debugfs. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQIzBAABCgAdFiEE00UqedjCtOrGVvQiQBSofoJIUNIFAl4zInwACgkQQBSofoJI UNL4Tg/+JBbVEFa3IUBGMdbjfgd/g0Jye++iMAYYGRWT6Ll/IGcHRV9NunITjgWU mBZqdhI28kXeiGCcewB1ZvivjLx22X4n6yevHk2B5A6PNe9IDCHi0HOAhJJHkjPH ecv2L+vX3Oj4y0+H7JNz9Fo3OIPJvMPtCQWlg1z+VQyhB85zNP7fZlvvIY4tG8yw ERo0YNotLqwcF1BxCwNbAhV3aJGDxar+MI//yNzpiwDX7IptVpqestfcoIYc9kKL 4kSWRyEIGwcuIeyoM6aofGS9t4Z/Oe/gdqcxNr6l5n0Q/tMTpb4b/fJFGNr6RRx9 X9NQo8flkQb2DEIOP0DVpO2aPebzsVtzg3LZUOLA83+wCHfwINtHai2Dy2zDJ2my BrVdou8fe2oxoaYihJg/Tz9cd0nA/6mZArtpYvDImAmX/xuGOvVk9zZkXNwc9nVX EyVzy0vW4lA6gAIJ95aG6DDhJcAtVoy0MhBRWG92Pufxhn9aW24AV63ChWUf9DRx /3RqpMAuQ3UC2gOxXKKnr54lsdhUIMn/y9sjROkVvQ1BvgRVxO8I4GFvMHMKv9pR 9KXiVRdzyYERyoL4+MF7A2zTnw+RHL4RVILa85p2ALGy2jQ1UuNUQi0BN9x2u1v8 S1ifNNX8SwOP+83ImFJhhn3HybpFQ45aLO3F7ZjKBQAnufJu+xw= =zeoY -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'f2fs-for-5.6' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/jaegeuk/f2fs Pull f2fs updates from Jaegeuk Kim: "In this series, we've implemented transparent compression experimentally. This commit removes kfree_rcu() special-casing and the lazy-callback handling from Tree RCU. Use ODP MRs for kernel ULPs
The following series extends MR creation routines to allow creation of user MRs through kernel ULPs as a proxy. The immediate use case is to allow RDS to work over FS-DAX, which requires ODP (on-demand-paging) MRs to be created and such MRs were not possible to create prior this series. The first part of this patchset extends RDMA to have special verb ib_reg_user_mr(). The common use case that uses this function is a userspace application that allocates memory for HCA access but the responsibility to register the memory at the HCA is on an kernel ULP. This ULP acts as an agent for the userspace application. The second part provides advise MR functionality for ULPs. This is integral part of ODP flows and used to trigger pagefaults in advance to prepare memory before running working set. The third part is actual user of those in-kernel APIs. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iHUEABYIAB0WIQT1m3YD37UfMCUQBNwp8NhrnBAZsQUCXiVO8AAKCRAp8NhrnBAZ scTrAP9gb0d3qv0IOtHw5aGI1DAgjTUn/SzUOnsjDEn7DIoh9gEA2+ZmaEyLXKrl +UcZb31auy5P8ueJYokRLhLAyRcOIAg= =yaHb -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'rds-odp-for-5.5' into rdma.git for-next From https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/leon/linux-rdma Leon Romanovsky says: ==================== Use ODP MRs for kernel ULPs The following series extends MR creation routines to allow creation of user MRs through kernel ULPs as a proxy. ==================== * tag 'rds-odp-for-5.5': net/rds: Use prefetch for On-Demand-Paging MR net/rds: Handle ODP mr registration/unregistration net/rds: Detect need of On-Demand-Paging memory registration RDMA/mlx5: Fix handling of IOVA != user_va in ODP paths IB/mlx5: Mask out unsupported ODP capabilities for kernel QPs RDMA/mlx5: Don't fake udata for kernel path IB/mlx5: Add ODP WQE handlers for kernel QPs IB/core: Add interface to advise_mr for kernel users IB/core: Introduce ib_reg_user_mr IB: Allow calls to ib_umem_get from kernel ULPs Signed-off-by: Jason Gunthorpe <jgg@mellanox.com> |

btrfs: make btrfs_ordered_extent naming consistent with btrfs_file_extent_item
ordered->start, ordered->len, and ordered->disk_len correspond to fi->disk_bytenr, fi->num_bytes, and fi->disk_num_bytes, respectively. It's confusing to translate between the two naming schemes. Since a btrfs_ordered_extent is basically a pending btrfs_file_extent_item, let's make the former use the naming from the latter. f2fs: support data compression
This patch tries to support compression in f2fs. - New term named cluster is defined as basic unit of compression, file can be divided into multiple clusters logically. One cluster includes 4 << n (n >= 0) logical pages, compression size is also cluster size, each of cluster can be compressed or not. - In cluster metadata layout, one special flag is used to indicate cluster is compressed one or normal one, for compressed cluster, following metadata maps cluster to [1, 4 << n - 1] physical blocks, in where f2fs stores data including compress header and compressed data. - In order to eliminate write amplification during overwrite, F2FS only support compression on write-once file, data can be compressed only when all logical blocks in file are valid and cluster compress ratio is lower than specified threshold. - To enable compression on regular inode, there are three ways: * chattr +c file * chattr +c dir; touch dir/file * mount w/ -o compress_extension=ext; touch file.ext Compress metadata layout: [Dnode Structure] +-----------------------------------------------+ | cluster 1 | cluster 2 | ......... | cluster N | +-----------------------------------------------+ . . . . . . . . . devmap: Adjust tracepoint for map-less queue flush
Now that we don't have a reference to a devmap when flushing the device bulk queue, let's change the the devmap_xmit tracepoint to remote the map_id and map_index fields entirely. Rearrange the fields so 'drops' and 'sent' stay in the same position in the tracepoint struct, to make it possible for the xdp_monitor utility to read both the old and the new format. xdp: Use bulking for non-map XDP_REDIRECT and consolidate code paths
Since the bulk queue used by XDP_REDIRECT now lives in struct net_device, we can re-use the bulking for the non-map version of the bpf_redirect() helper. This is a simple matter of having xdp_do_redirect_slow() queue the frame on the bulk queue instead of sending it out with __bpf_tx_xdp(). Unfortunately we can't make the bpf_redirect() helper return an error if the ifindex doesn't exit (as bpf_redirect_map() does), because we don't have a reference to the network namespace of the ingress device at the time the helper is called. So we have to leave it as-is and keep the device lookup in xdp_do_redirect_slow(). Since this leaves less reason to have the non-map redirect code in a separate function, so we get rid of the xdp_do_redirect_slow() function entirely. This does lose us the tracepoint disambiguation, but fortunately the xdp_redirect and xdp_redirect_map tracepoints use the same tracepoint entry structures. This means both can contain a map index, so we can just amend the tracepoint definitions so we always emit the xdp_redirect(_err) tracepoints, but with the map ID only populated if a map is present. This means we retire the xdp_redirect_map(_err) tracepoints entirely, but keep the definitions around in case someone is still listening for them. With this change, the performance of the xdp_redirect sample program goes from 5Mpps to 8.4Mpps (a 68% increase). Since the flush functions are no longer map-specific, rename the flush() functions to drop _map from their names. One of the renamed functions is the xdp_do_flush_map() callback used in all the xdp-enabled drivers. To keep from having to update all drivers, use a #define to keep the old name working, and only update the virtual drivers in this patch. workqueue: add worker function to workqueue_execute_end tracepoint
It's surprising that workqueue_execute_end includes only the work when its counterpart workqueue_execute_start has both the work and the worker function. You can't set a tracing filter or trigger based on the function, and postprocessing scripts interested in specific functions are harder to write since they have to remember the work from _start and match it up with the same field in _end. Add the function name, taking care to use the copy stashed in the worker since the work is no longer safe to touch. xprtrdma: Make sendctx queue lifetime the same as connection lifetime
The size of the sendctx queue depends on the value stored in ia->ri_max_send_sges. This value is determined by querying the underlying device. Eventually, rpcrdma_ia_open() and rpcrdma_ep_create() will be called in the connect worker rather than at transport set-up time. The underlying device will not have been chosen device set-up time. The sendctx queue will thus have to be created after the underlying device has been chosen via address and route resolution; in other words, in the connect worker. afs: Fix use-after-loss-of-ref
afs_lookup() has a tracepoint to indicate the outcome of
d_splice_alias(), passing it the inode to retrieve the fid from.
However, the function gave up its ref on that inode when it called
d_splice_alias(), which may have failed and dropped the inode.
Fix this by caching the fid.

tracing: Make struct ring_buffer less ambiguous
As there's two struct ring_buffers in the kernel, it causes some confusion. The other one being the perf ring buffer. It was agreed upon that as neither of the ring buffers are generic enough to be used globally, they should be renamed as: perf's ring_buffer -> perf_buffer ftrace's ring_buffer -> trace_buffer This implements the changes to the ring buffer that ftrace uses. Discussion in the below link reported that symbols in modules can appear
to be before _stext on ARM architecture, causing wrapping with the
offsets of this tracepoint. Change the offset type to s32 to fix this.

media: v4l2: abstract timeval handling in v4l2_buffer
As a preparation for adding 64-bit time_t support in the uapi, change the drivers to no longer care about the format of the timestamp field in struct v4l2_buffer. The v4l2_timeval_to_ns() function is no longer needed in the kernel after this, but there is userspace code relying on it to be part of the uapi header. sctp: move trace_sctp_probe_path into sctp_outq_sack
The original patch bringed in the "SCTP ACK tracking trace event" feature was committed at Dec.20, 2017, it replaced jprobe usage with trace events, and bringed in two trace events, one is TRACE_EVENT(sctp_probe), another one is TRACE_EVENT(sctp_probe_path). The original patch intended to trigger the trace_sctp_probe_path in TRACE_EVENT(sctp_probe) as below code, +TRACE_EVENT(sctp_probe, + + TP_PROTO(const struct sctp_endpoint *ep, + const struct sctp_association *asoc, + struct sctp_chunk *chunk), + + TP_ARGS(ep, asoc, chunk), + + TP_STRUCT__entry( + __field(__u64, asoc) + __field(__u32, mark) + __field(__u16, bind_port) + __field(__u16, peer_port) + __field(__u32, pathmtu) + __field(__u32, rwnd) + __field(__u16, unack_data) + ), + + TP_fast_assign( + struct sk_buff *skb = chunk->skb; + + __entry->asoc = (unsigned long)asoc; + __entry->mark = skb->mark; + __entry->bind_port = ep->base.bind_addr.port; + __entry->peer_port = asoc->peer.port; + __entry->pathmtu = asoc->pathmtu; + __entry->rwnd = asoc->peer.rwnd; + __entry->unack_data = asoc->unack_data; + + if (trace_sctp_probe_path_enabled()) { + struct sctp_transport *sp; + + list_for_each_entry(sp, &asoc->peer.transport_addr_list, + transports) { + trace_sctp_probe_path(sp, asoc); + } + } + ), But I found it did not work when I did testing, and trace_sctp_probe_path had no output, I finally found that there is trace buffer lock operation(trace_event_buffer_reserve) in include/trace/trace_events.h: static notrace void \ trace_event_raw_event_##call(void *__data, proto) \ { \ struct trace_event_file *trace_file = __data; \ struct trace_event_data_offsets_##call __maybe_unused __data_offsets;\ struct trace_event_buffer fbuffer; \ struct trace_event_raw_##call *entry; \ int __data_size; \ \ if (trace_trigger_soft_disabled(trace_file)) \ return; \ \ __data_size = trace_event_get_offsets_##call(&__data_offsets, args); \ \ entry = trace_event_buffer_reserve(&fbuffer, trace_file, \ sizeof(*entry) + __data_size); \ \ if (!entry) \ return; \ \ tstruct \ \ { assign; } \ \ trace_event_buffer_commit(&fbuffer); \ } The reason caused no output of trace_sctp_probe_path is that trace_sctp_probe_path written in TP_fast_assign part of TRACE_EVENT(sctp_probe), and it will be placed( { assign; } ) after the trace_event_buffer_reserve() when compiler expands Macro, entry = trace_event_buffer_reserve(&fbuffer, trace_file, \ sizeof(*entry) + __data_size); \ \ if (!entry) \ return; \ \ tstruct \ \ { assign; } \ so trace_sctp_probe_path finally can not acquire trace_event_buffer and return no output, that is to say the nest of tracepoint entry function is not allowed. The function call flow is: trace_sctp_probe() -> trace_event_raw_event_sctp_probe() -> lock buffer -> trace_sctp_probe_path() -> trace_event_raw_event_sctp_probe_path() --nested -> buffer has been locked and return no output. This patch is to remove trace_sctp_probe_path from the TP_fast_assign part of TRACE_EVENT(sctp_probe) to avoid the nest of entry function, and trigger sctp_probe_path_trace in sctp_outq_sack. After this patch, you can enable both events individually, # cd /sys/kernel/debug/tracing # echo 1 > events/sctp/sctp_probe/enable # echo 1 > events/sctp/sctp_probe_path/enable Or, you can enable all the events under sctp. # echo 1 > events/sctp/enable Signed-off-by: Kevin Kou <qdkevin.kou@gmail.com> Acked-by: Marcelo Ricardo Leitner <marcelo.leitner@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: David S. rcu: Make PREEMPT_RCU be a modifier to TREE_RCU
Currently PREEMPT_RCU and TREE_RCU are mutually exclusive Kconfig options. But PREEMPT_RCU actually specifies a kind of TREE_RCU, namely a preemptible TREE_RCU. This commit therefore makes PREEMPT_RCU be a modifer to the TREE_RCU Kconfig option. This has the benefit of simplifying several of the #if expressions that formerly needed to check both, but now need only check one or the other. This is a relatively quiet cycle for nfsd, mainly various bugfixes.
Possibly most interesting is Trond's fixes for some callback races that were due to my incomplete understanding of rpc client shutdown. Unfortunately at the last minute I've started noticing a new intermittent failure to send callbacks. As the logic seems basically correct, I'm leaving Trond's patches in for now, and hope to find a fix in the next week so I don't have to revert those patches. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQJJBAABCAAzFiEEYtFWavXG9hZotryuJ5vNeUKO4b4FAl3r3AAVHGJmaWVsZHNA ZmllbGRzZXMub3JnAAoJECebzXlCjuG+rjkP/3L6DZs0Uv0BYbGq5Gmit0uoPSQk 8BT7oQhbagCh+ULRYWCnK6cz82wejR4Gzq4PLyl5x5Vcc5x+bLoPI9YgiRZlIbZu ZvSg93E6SITLfq5xRlDC0MlIVZkI+HoIfyYgv1aYiWvQ3834bcx4DxVm9h7cNpT3 x37anEFi1lv3n9fct3obOrs3AvCS76XyA6VVhcSLJ77amKQ+O7LI0crqUc6cuX2i CkTwTSDwyCrzkx3dZ2xDPDTbLecxw+Ce4adaby5v3GEQo3TOCmEWX92D3dvzfMmv ICU07FsVOILnIT/fmC91b1+JWVRLjUUBw5EPmDduwSP/yw4YnIEODFEP/wAUAmMJ vJ9hi9c1rThQ9n8h08RIwA2snhnpXRxKCWhpIRY6WM8DhHL9Y9AuVPYTKxhQOjPK l3wbOGcMW63NrTOPHHN7hTB0vDLgPKIXYVIrMvZTd/P7CghDDEbhT1gDvx/IL3Uq WrHKbJtK7rbx9i2bh5f6fH0DRrv7lxbD0ffunRRa3twPAe6zsG9WPjsbZZraZzEg O7/o3wZu2N7MpL5bXPfzB+5ylOTxvNWew07NJjA4BIOfwin3bw/71YfB0Vnoairv PhmbN2Dj4/t82ld0JU5GJWojpUfH4ARXM2Li9WO99wzx+KrxScsqGPnRMFe9dC7b Q7ltP1p0gUbkJ88Z =b2zA -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'nfsd-5.5' of git://linux-nfs.org/~bfields/linux Pull nfsd updates from Bruce Fields: "This is a relatively quiet cycle for nfsd, mainly various bugfixes. y2038: syscall implementation cleanups
This is a series of cleanups for the y2038 work, mostly intended for namespace cleaning: the kernel defines the traditional time_t, timeval and timespec types that often lead to y2038-unsafe code. Even though the unsafe usage is mostly gone from the kernel, having the types and associated functions around means that we can still grow new users, and that we may be missing conversions to safe types that actually matter. There are still a number of driver specific patches needed to get the last users of these types removed, those have been submitted to the respective maintainers. rss_stat: add support to detect RSS updates of external mm
When a process updates the RSS of a different process, the rss_stat tracepoint appears in the context of the process doing the update. This can confuse userspace that the RSS of process doing the update is updated, while in reality a different process's RSS was updated. This issue happens in reclaim paths such as with direct reclaim or background reclaim. This patch adds more information to the tracepoint about whether the mm being updated belongs to the current process's context (curr field). We also include a hash of the mm pointer so that the process who the mm belongs to can be uniquely identified (mm_id field). Also vsprintf.c is refactored a bit to allow reuse of hashing code. mm: emit tracepoint when RSS changes
Useful to track how RSS is changing per TGID to detect spikes in RSS and memory hogs. Several Android teams have been using this patch in various kernel trees for half a year now. Many reported to me it is really useful so I'm posting it upstream. Initial patch developed by Tim Murray. Changes I made from original patch: o Prevent any additional space consumed by mm_struct. Regarding the fact that the RSS may change too often thus flooding the traces - note that, there is some "hysterisis" with this already. That is - We update the counter only if we receive 64 page faults due to SPLIT_RSS_ACCOUNTING. However, during zapping or copying of pte range, the RSS is updated immediately which can become noisy/flooding. In a previous discussion, we agreed that BPF or ftrace can be used to rate limit the signal if this becomes an issue. Also note that I added wrappers to trace_rss_stat to prevent compiler errors where linux/mm.h is included from tracing code, causing errors such as: CC kernel/trace/power-traces.o In file included from ./include/trace/define_trace.h:102, from ./include/trace/events/kmem.h:342, from ./include/linux/mm.h:31, from ./include/linux/ring_buffer.h:5, from ./include/linux/trace_events.h:6, from ./include/trace/events/power.h:12, from kernel/trace/power-traces.c:15: ./include/trace/trace_events.h:113:22: error: field `ent' has incomplete type struct trace_entry ent; \ Link: http://lore.kernel.org/r/20190903200905.198642-1-joel@joelfernandes.org Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/r/20191001172817.234886-1-joel@joelfernandes.org Co-developed-by: Tim Murray <timmurray@google.com> Signed-off-by: Tim Murray <timmurray@google.com> Signed-off-by: Joel Fernandes (Google) <joel@joelfernandes.org> Acked-by: Michal Hocko <mhocko@suse.com> Cc: Carmen Jackson <carmenjackson@google.com> Cc: Mayank Gupta <mayankgupta@google.com> Cc: Daniel Colascione <dancol@google.com> Cc: Steven Rostedt (VMware) <rostedt@goodmis.org> Cc: Minchan Kim <minchan@kernel.org> Cc: "Aneesh Kumar K.V" <aneesh.kumar@linux.ibm.com> Cc: Dan Williams <dan.j.williams@intel.com> Cc: Jerome Glisse <jglisse@redhat.com> Cc: Matthew Wilcox <willy@infradead.org> Cc: Ralph Campbell <rcampbell@nvidia.com> Cc: Vlastimil Babka <vbabka@suse.cz> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org> |

New tracing features:
- PERAMAENT flag to ftrace_ops when attaching a callback to a function As /proc/sys/kernel/ftrace_enabled when set to zero will disable all attached callbacks in ftrace, this has a detrimental impact on live kernel tracing, as it disables all that it patched. If a ftrace_ops is registered to ftrace with the PERMANENT flag set, it will prevent ftrace_enabled from being disabled, and if ftrace_enabled is already disabled, it will prevent a ftrace_ops with PREMANENT flag set from being registered. - New register_ftrace_direct(). As eBPF would like to register its own trampolines to be called by the ftrace nop locations directly, without going through the ftrace trampoline, this function has been added. This allows for eBPF trampolines to live along side of ftrace, perf, kprobe and live patching. It also utilizes the ftrace enabled_functions file that keeps track of functions that have been modified in the kernel, to allow for security auditing. - Allow for kernel internal use of ftrace instances. Subsystems in the kernel can now create and destroy their own tracing instances which allows them to have their own tracing buffer, and be able to record events without worrying about other users from writing over their data. - New seq_buf_hex_dump() that lets users use the hex_dump() in their seq_buf usage. - Notifications now added to tracing_max_latency to allow user space to know when a new max latency is hit by one of the latency tracers. - Wider spread use of generic compare operations for use of bsearch and friends. - More synthetic event fields may be defined (32 up from 16) - Use of xarray for architectures with sparse system calls, for the system call trace events. This along with small clean ups and fixes. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iIoEABYIADIWIQRRSw7ePDh/lE+zeZMp5XQQmuv6qgUCXdwv4BQccm9zdGVkdEBn b29kbWlzLm9yZwAKCRAp5XQQmuv6qnB5AP91vsdHQjwE1+/UWG/cO+qFtKvn2QJK QmBRIJNH/s+1TAD/fAOhgw+ojSK3o/qc+NpvPTEW9AEwcJL1wacJUn+XbQc= =ztql -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'trace-v5.5' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rostedt/linux-trace Pull tracing updates from Steven Rostedt: "New tracing features: - New PERMANENT flag to ftrace_ops when attaching a callback to a function. ftrace: Rework event_create_dir()
Rework event_create_dir() to use an array of static data instead of function pointers where possible. The problem is that it would call the function pointer on module load before parse_args(), possibly even before jump_labels were initialized. Luckily the generated functions don't use jump_labels but it still seems fragile. It also gets in the way of changing when we make the module map executable. The generated function are basically calling trace_define_field() with a bunch of static arguments. So instead of a function, capture these arguments in a static array, avoiding the function call. Now there are a number of cases where the fields are dynamic (syscall arguments, kprobes and uprobes), in which case a static array does not work, for these we preserve the function call. Luckily all these cases are not related to modules and so we can retain the function call for them. Also fix up all broken tracepoint definitions that now generate a compile error. There's been a set of fixes done this week, I'll send those out as well once we're certain we're fully happy with them. This contains: - Unification of the "normal" submit path and the SQPOLL path (Pavel) - Support for sparse (and bigger) file sets, and updating of those file sets without needing to unregister/register again. - Independently sized CQ ring, instead of just making it always 2x the SQ ring size. This makes it more flexible for networked applications. - Support for overflowed CQ ring, never dropping events but providing backpressure on submits. - Add support for absolute timeouts, not just relative ones. - Support for generic cancellations. This divorces io_uring from workqueues as well, which additionally gets us one step closer to generic async system call support. - With cancellations, we can support grabbing the process file table as well, just like we do mm context. This allows support for system calls that create file descriptors, like accept4() support that's built on top of that. - Support for io_uring tracing (Dmitrii) - Support for linked timeouts. SUNRPC: Capture completion of all RPC tasks
RPC tasks on the backchannel never invoke xprt_complete_rqst(), so there is no way to report their tk_status at completion. Also, any RPC task that exits via rpc_exit_task() before it is replied to will also disappear without a trace. Introduce a trace point that is symmetrical with rpc_task_begin that captures the termination status of each RPC task. Sample trace output for callback requests initiated on the server: kworker/u8:12-448 [003] 127.025240: rpc_task_end: task:50@3 flags=ASYNC|DYNAMIC|SOFT|SOFTCONN|SENT runstate=RUNNING|ACTIVE status=0 action=rpc_exit_task kworker/u8:12-448 [002] 127.567310: rpc_task_end: task:51@3 flags=ASYNC|DYNAMIC|SOFT|SOFTCONN|SENT runstate=RUNNING|ACTIVE status=0 action=rpc_exit_task kworker/u8:12-448 [001] 130.506817: rpc_task_end: task:52@3 flags=ASYNC|DYNAMIC|SOFT|SOFTCONN|SENT runstate=RUNNING|ACTIVE status=0 action=rpc_exit_task Odd, though, that I never see trace_rpc_task_complete, either in the forward or backchannel. page_pool: Add API to update numa node
Add page_pool_update_nid() to be called by page pool consumers when they detect numa node changes. It will update the page pool nid value to start allocating from the new effective numa node. This is to mitigate page pool allocating pages from a wrong numa node, where the pool was originally allocated, and holding on to pages that belong to a different numa node, which causes performance degradation. For pages that are already being consumed and could be returned to the pool by the consumer, in next patch we will add a check per page to avoid recycling them back to the pool and return them to the page allocator. page_pool: extend tracepoint to also include the page PFN
The MM tracepoint for page free (called kmem:mm_page_free) doesn't provide the page pointer directly, instead it provides the PFN (Page Frame Number). This is annoying when writing a page_pool leak detector in BPF. This patch change page_pool tracepoints to also provide the PFN. The page pointer is still provided to allow other kinds of troubleshooting from BPF. Signed-off-by: Jesper Dangaard Brouer <brouer@redhat.com> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net> |

page_pool: add destroy attempts counter and rename tracepoint
When Jonathan change the page_pool to become responsible to its own shutdown via deferred work queue, then the disconnect_cnt counter was removed from xdp memory model tracepoint. This patch change the page_pool_inflight tracepoint name to page_pool_release, because it reflects the new responsability better. And it reintroduces a counter that reflect the number of times page_pool_release have been tried. The counter is also used by the code, to only empty the alloc cache once. With a stuck work queue running every second and counter being 64-bit, it will overrun in approx 584 billion years. For comparison, Earth lifetime expectancy is 7.5 billion years, before the Sun will engulf, and destroy, the Earth.
