Currently x86-64 efi_call_phys_prolog() saves into a global variable (save_pgd),
and efi_call_phys_epilog() restores the kernel pagetables from that global
variable.
Change this to a cleaner save/restore pattern where the saving function returns
the saved object and the restore function restores that.
Apply the same concept to the 32-bit code as well.
Plus this approach, as an added bonus, allows us to express the
!efi_enabled(EFI_OLD_MEMMAP) situation in a clean fashion as well,
via a 'NULL' return value.

Tapasweni Pathak reported that we do a kmalloc() in efi_call_phys_prolog()
on x86-64 while having interrupts disabled, which is a big no-no, as
kmalloc() can sleep.
Solve this by removing the irq disabling from the prolog/epilog calls
around EFI calls: it's unnecessary, as in this stage we are single
threaded in the boot thread, and we don't ever execute this from
interrupt contexts.

Change the ownership of power_supply structure from each driver
implementing the class to the power supply core.
The patch changes power_supply_register() function thus all drivers
implementing power supply class are adjusted.
Each driver provides the implementation of power supply. However it
should not be the owner of power supply class instance because it is
exposed by core to other subsystems with power_supply_get_by_name().
These other subsystems have no knowledge when the driver will unregister
the power supply. This leads to several issues when driver is unbound -
mostly because user of power supply accesses freed memory.
Instead let the core own the instance of struct 'power_supply'. Other
users of this power supply will still access valid memory because it
will be freed when device reference count reaches 0. Currently this
means "it will leak" but power_supply_put() call in next patches will
solve it.
This solves invalid memory references in following race condition
scenario:

Intel's Quark X1000 SoC contains a set of registers called
Isolated Memory Regions. IMRs are accessed over the IOSF mailbox
interface. IMRs are areas carved out of memory that define
read/write access rights to the various system agents within the
Quark system. For a given agent in the system it is possible to
specify if that agent may read or write an area of memory
defined by an IMR with a granularity of 1 KiB.
Quark_SecureBootPRM_330234_001.pdf section 4.5 details the
concept of IMRs quark-x1000-datasheet.pdf section 12.7.4 details
the implementation of IMRs in silicon.
eSRAM flush, CPU Snoop write-only, CPU SMM Mode, CPU non-SMM
mode, RMU and PCIe Virtual Channels (VC0 and VC1) can have
individual read/write access masks applied to them for a given
memory region in Quark X1000. This enables IMRs to treat each
memory transaction type listed above on an individual basis and
to filter appropriately based on the IMR access mask for the
memory region. Quark supports eight IMRs.
Since all of the DMA capable SoC components in the X1000 are
mapped to VC0 it is possible to define sections of memory as
invalid for DMA write operations originating from Ethernet, USB,
SD and any other DMA capable south-cluster component on VC0.
Similarly it is possible to mark kernel memory as non-SMM mode
read/write only or to mark BIOS runtime memory as SMM mode
accessible only depending on the particular memory footprint on
a given system.
On an IMR violation Quark SoC X1000 systems are configured to
reset the system, so ensuring that the IMR memory map is
consistent with the EFI provided memory map is critical to
ensure no IMR violations reset the system.
The API for accessing IMRs is based on MTRR code but doesn't
provide a /proc or /sys interface to manipulate IMRs. Defining
the size and extent of IMRs is exclusively the domain of
in-kernel code.
Quark firmware sets up a series of locked IMRs around pieces of
memory that firmware owns such as ACPI runtime data. During boot
a series of unlocked IMRs are placed around items in memory to
guarantee no DMA modification of those items can take place.
Grub also places an unlocked IMR around the kernel boot params
data structure and compressed kernel image. It is necessary for
the kernel to tear down all unlocked IMRs in order to ensure
that the kernel's view of memory passed via the EFI memory map
is consistent with the IMR memory map. Without tearing down all
unlocked IMRs on boot transitory IMRs such as those used to
protect the compressed kernel image will cause IMR violations and system reboots.
The IMR init code tears down all unlocked IMRs and sets a
protective IMR around the kernel .text and .rodata as one
contiguous block. This sanitizes the IMR memory map with respect
to the EFI memory map and protects the read-only portions of the
kernel from unwarranted DMA access.

printk and friends can now format bitmaps using '%*pb[l]'. cpumask
and nodemask also provide cpumask_pr_args() and nodemask_pr_args()
respectively which can be used to generate the two printf arguments
necessary to format the specified cpu/nodemask.

Andy pointed out that if an NMI or MCE is received while we're in the
middle of an EFI mixed mode call a triple fault will occur. This can
happen, for example, when issuing an EFI mixed mode call while running
perf.
The reason for the triple fault is that we execute the mixed mode call
in 32-bit mode with paging disabled but with 64-bit kernel IDT handlers
installed throughout the call.
At Andy's suggestion, stop playing the games we currently do at runtime,
such as disabling paging and installing a 32-bit GDT for __KERNEL_CS. We
can simply switch to the __KERNEL32_CS descriptor before invoking
firmware services, and run in compatibility mode. This way, if an
NMI/MCE does occur the kernel IDT handler will execute correctly, since
it'll jump to __KERNEL_CS automatically.
However, this change is only possible post-ExitBootServices(). Before
then the firmware "owns" the machine and expects for its 32-bit IDT
handlers to be left intact to service interrupts, etc.
So, we now need to distinguish between early boot and runtime
invocations of EFI services. During early boot, we need to restore the
GDT that the firmware expects to be present. We can only jump to the
__KERNEL32_CS code segment for mixed mode calls after ExitBootServices()
has been invoked.
A liberal sprinkling of comments in the thunking code should make the
differences in early and late environments more apparent.

__FUNCTION__ hasn't been treated as a string literal since gcc 3.4, so
this only helps people who only test-compile using 3.3 (compiler-gcc3.h
barks at anything older than that). Besides, there are almost no
occurrences of __FUNCTION__ left in the tree.

Intel Moorestown platform support was removed few years ago. This is a follow
up which removes Moorestown specific code for the serial devices. It includes
mrst_max3110 and earlyprintk bits.
This was used on SFI (Medfield, Clovertrail) based platforms as well, though
new ones use normal serial interface for the console service.

and preparatory work for the irqdomain conversion and ioapic hotplug

the offenders.
It would be great to get this into 3.19. That makes reworking the
problematic parts simpler. The usual tip testing did not unearth any
issues and it is fully bisectible now.
I'm pretty confident that this wont affect the calmness of the xmas
season.

They are dominated by the removal of the .owner field in platform
drivers. They touch a lot of files, but they are "simple" changes, just
removing a line in a structure.
Other than that, a few minor driver core and debugfs changes. There are
some ath9k patches coming in through this tree that have been acked by
the wireless maintainers as they relied on the debugfs changes.
Everything has been in linux-next for a while.

In commit 3891a04aaf ("x86-64, espfix: Don't leak bits 31:16 of %esp
returning..") the "ESPFix Area" was added to the page table dump special
sections. That area, though, has a limited amount of entries printed.
The EFI runtime services are, unfortunately, located in-between the
espfix area and the high kernel memory mapping. Due to the enforced
limitation for the espfix area, the EFI mappings won't be printed in the
page table dump.
To make the ESP runtime service mappings visible again, provide them a
dedicated entry.

In init_per_cpu(), when get_cpu_topology() fails, init_per_cpu_tunables()
is not called afterwards. This means that bau_control->statp is NULL.
If a user then reads /proc/sgi_uv/ptc_statistics ptc_seq_show() references
a NULL pointer. Therefore, since uv_bau_init calls set_bau_off when
init_per_cpu() fails, we add code that detects when the bau is off in
ptc_seq_show() to avoid referencing a NULL pointer.

The 32 bit and 64 bit implementations differ in their __init annotations
for some functions referenced from the common EFI code. Namely, the 32
bit variant is missing some of the __init annotations the 64 bit variant
has.
To solve the colliding annotations, mark the corresponding functions in
efi_32.c as initialization code, too -- as it is such.
Actually, quite a few more functions are only used during initialization
and therefore can be marked __init. They are therefore annotated, too.
Also add the __init annotation to the prototypes in the efi.h header so
users of those functions will see it's meant as initialization code
only.
This patch also fixes the "prelog" typo. ("prologue" / "epilogue" might
be more appropriate but this is C code after all, not an opera! :D)

If enter virtual mode failed due to some reason other than the efi call
the EFI_RUNTIME_SERVICES bit in efi.flags should be cleared thus users
of efi runtime services can check the bit and handle the case instead of
assume efi runtime is ok.
Per Matt, if efi call SetVirtualAddressMap fails we will be not sure
it's safe to make any assumptions about the state of the system. So
kernel panics instead of clears EFI_RUNTIME_SERVICES bit.

noefi kernel param means actually disabling efi runtime, Per suggestion
from Leif Lindholm efi=noruntime should be better. But since noefi is

Gracefully handle failures to allocate memory for the image, which might
be arbitrarily large.
efi_bgrt_init can fail in various ways as well, usually because the
BIOS-provided BGRT structure does not match expectations. Add
appropriate error messages rather than failing silently.

We need a way to customize the behaviour of the EFI boot stub, in
particular, we need a way to disable the "chunking" workaround, used
when reading files from the EFI System Partition.
One of my machines doesn't cope well when reading files in 1MB chunks to
a buffer above the 4GB mark - it appears that the "chunking" bug
workaround triggers another firmware bug. This was only discovered with
commit 4bf7111f50 ("x86/efi: Support initrd loaded above 4G"), and
that commit is perfectly valid. The symptom I observed was a corrupt
initrd rather than any kind of crash.
efi= is now used to specify EFI parameters in two very different
execution environments, the EFI boot stub and during kernel boot.
There is also a slight performance optimization by enabling efi=nochunk,
but that's offset by the fact that you're more likely to run into
firmware issues, at least on x86. This is the rationale behind leaving
the workaround enabled by default.
Also provide some documentation for EFI_READ_CHUNK_SIZE and why we're
using the current value of 1MB.

__get_cpu_var() is used for multiple purposes in the kernel source. One of
them is address calculation via the form &__get_cpu_var(x). This calculates
the address for the instance of the percpu variable of the current processor
based on an offset.
Other use cases are for storing and retrieving data from the current
processors percpu area. __get_cpu_var() can be used as an lvalue when
writing data or on the right side of an assignment.
__get_cpu_var() is defined as :

__get_cpu_var() always only does an address determination. However, store
and retrieve operations could use a segment prefix (or global register on
other platforms) to avoid the address calculation.
this_cpu_write() and this_cpu_read() can directly take an offset into a
percpu area and use optimized assembly code to read and write per cpu
variables.
This patch converts __get_cpu_var into either an explicit address
calculation using this_cpu_ptr() or into a use of this_cpu operations that
use the offset. Thereby address calculations are avoided and less registers
are used when code is generated.

Despite the hickup in Ingos previous pull request - caused by the
missing fixup for the suspend/resume issue reported by Borislav - I
strongly recommend that this update finds its way into 3.17. Some
history for you:
This is preparatory work for physical IOAPIC hotplug. The first
attempt to support this was done by Yinghai and I shot it down because
it just added another layer of obscurity and complexity to the already
existing mess without tackling the underlying shortcomings of the
current implementation.
After quite some on- and offlist discussions, I requested that the
design of this functionality must use generic infrastructure, i.e.
irq domains, which provide all the mechanisms to dynamically map linux
interrupt numbers to physical interrupts.
Jiang picked up the idea and did a great job of consolidating the
existing interfaces to manage the x86 (IOAPIC) interrupt system by
utilizing irq domains.
The testing in tip, Linux-next and inside of Intel on various machines
did not unearth any oddities until Borislav exposed it to one of his
oddball machines. The issue was resolved quickly, but unfortunately
the fix fell through the cracks and did not hit the tip tree before
Ingo sent the pull request. Not entirely Ingos fault, I also assumed
that the fix was already merged when Ingo asked me whether he could
send it.
Nevertheless this work has a proper design, has undergone several
rounds of review and the final fallout after applying it to tip and
integrating it into Linux-next has been more than moderate. It's the
ground work not only for IOAPIC hotplug, it will also allow us to move
the lowlevel vector allocation into the irqdomain hierarchy, which
will benefit other architectures as well. Patches are posted already,
but they are on hold for two weeks, see below.
I really appreciate the competence and responsiveness Jiang has shown
in course of this endavour. So I'm sure that any fallout of this will
be addressed in a timely manner.

Introduce EFI_PARAVIRT flag. If it is set then kernel runs
on EFI platform but it has not direct control on EFI stuff
like EFI runtime, tables, structures, etc. If not this means
that Linux Kernel has direct access to EFI infrastructure
and everything runs as usual.
This functionality is used in Xen dom0 because hypervisor
has full control on EFI stuff and all calls from dom0 to
EFI must be requested via special hypercall which in turn
executes relevant EFI code in behalf of dom0.

Use early_mem*() instead of early_io*() because all mapped EFI regions
are memory (usually RAM but they could also be ROM, EPROM, EEPROM, flash,
etc.) not I/O regions. Additionally, I/O family calls do not work correctly
under Xen in our case. early_ioremap() skips the PFN to MFN conversion
when building the PTE. Using it for memory will attempt to map the wrong
machine frame. However, all artificial EFI structures created under Xen
live in dom0 memory and should be mapped/unmapped using early_mem*() family
calls which map domain memory.

It appears that the BayTrail-T class of hardware requires EFI in order
to powerdown and reboot and no other reliable method exists.
This quirk is generally applicable to all hardware that has the ACPI
Hardware Reduced bit set, since usually ACPI would be the preferred
method.

Intel CE4100 platforms has i8259 legacy interrupt controllers, so don't
set legacy_pic to null_legacy_pic in late booting stage because we need
legacy_pic to mask i8259 pins when enabling IOAPIC pins for safety.

Currently, it's difficult to find all the workarounds that are
applied when running on EFI, because they're littered throughout
various code paths. This change moves all of them into a separate
file with the hope that it will be come the single location for all
our well documented quirks.

Update of TLB shootdown code for UV3.
Kernel function native_flush_tlb_others() calls
uv_flush_tlb_others() on UV to invalidate tlb page definitions
on remote cpus. The UV systems have a hardware 'broadcast assist
unit' which can be used to broadcast shootdown messages to all
cpu's of selected nodes.
The behavior of the BAU has changed only slightly with UV3:
- UV3 is recognized with is_uv3_hub().
- UV2 functions and structures (uv2_xxx) are in most cases
simply renamed to uv2_3_xxx.
- Some UV2 error workarounds are not needed for UV3.

Stuff in sysrq.c used to set it to 8 which is supposed to mean above
default level so set it to DEBUG instead as we're terminating/killing all
tasks and we want to be verbose there.
Also, correct the check in x86_64_start_kernel which should be >= as
we're clearly issuing the string there for all debug levels, not only
the magical 10.

For ioremapped efi memory aka old_map the virt addresses are not persistant
across kexec reboot. kexec-tools will read the runtime maps from sysfs then
pass them to 2nd kernel and assuming kexec efi boot is ok. This will cause
kexec boot failure.
To address this issue do not export runtime maps in case efi old_map so
userspace can use no efi boot instead.

No functional change. The request to allocate the irq above
NR_IRQS_LEGACY is completely pointless as the implementation enforces
that the dynamic allocations are above the GSI interrupts, which
includes the legacy PIT irqs.
This does not replace the requirement to move x86 to irq domains, but
it limits the mess to some degree.

For i386, all the EFI system runtime services functions return efi_status_t
except efi_reset_system_system. Therefore, not all functions can be covered
by the same macro in case the macro needs to do more than calling the function
(i.e., return a value). The purpose of the __efi_call_virt macro is to be used
when no return value is expected.
For x86_64, this macro would not be needed as all the runtime services return
u64. However, the same code is used for both x86_64 and i386. Thus, the macro
__efi_call_virt is also defined to not break compilation.

We really only need one phys and one virt function call, and then only
one assembly function to make firmware calls.
Since we are not using the C type system anyway, we're not really losing
much by deleting the macros apart from no longer having a check that
we are passing the correct number of parameters. The lack of duplicated
code seems like a worthwhile trade-off.

In the thunk patches the 'attr' argument was dropped to

Dan reported that phys_efi_get_time() is doing kmalloc(..., GFP_KERNEL)
under a spinlock which is very clearly a bug. Since phys_efi_get_time()
has no users let's just delete it instead of trying to fix it.
Note that since there are no users of phys_efi_get_time(), it is not
possible to actually trigger a GFP_KERNEL alloc under the spinlock.

I was triggering a #GP(0) from userland when running with
CONFIG_EFI_MIXED and CONFIG_IA32_EMULATION, from what looked like
register corruption. Turns out that the mixed mode code was trashing the
contents of %ds, %es and %ss in __efi64_thunk().
Save and restore the contents of these segment registers across the call
to __efi64_thunk() so that we don't corrupt the CPU context.

Some firmware appears to enable interrupts during boot service calls,
even if we've explicitly disabled them prior to the call. This is
actually allowed per the UEFI spec because boottime services expect to
be called with interrupts enabled.
So that's fine, we just need to ensure that we disable them again in
efi_enter32() before switching to a 64-bit GDT, otherwise an interrupt
may fire causing a 32-bit IRQ handler to run after we've left
compatibility mode.
Despite efi_enter32() being called both for boottime and runtime
services, this really only affects boottime because the runtime services
callchain is executed with interrupts disabled. See efi_thunk().

Add the Kconfig option and bump the kernel header version so that boot
loaders can check whether the handover code is available if they want.
The xloadflags field in the bzImage header is also updated to reflect
that the kernel supports both entry points by setting both of
XLF_EFI_HANDOVER_32 and XLF_EFI_HANDOVER_64 when CONFIG_EFI_MIXED=y.
XLF_CAN_BE_LOADED_ABOVE_4G is disabled so that the kernel text is
guaranteed to be addressable with 32-bits.
Note that no boot loaders should be using the bits set in xloadflags to
decide which entry point to jump to. The entire scheme is based on the
concept that 32-bit bootloaders always jump to ->handover_offset and
64-bit loaders always jump to ->handover_offset + 512. We set both bits
merely to inform the boot loader that it's safe to use the native
handover offset even if the machine type in the PE/COFF header claims
otherwise.

Setup the runtime services based on whether we're booting in EFI native
mode or not. For non-native mode we need to thunk from 64-bit into
32-bit mode before invoking the EFI runtime services.
Using the runtime services after SetVirtualAddressMap() is slightly more
complicated because we need to ensure that all the addresses we pass to
the firmware are below the 4GB boundary so that they can be addressed
with 32-bit pointers, see efi_setup_page_tables().

Implement the transition code to go from IA32e mode to protected mode in
the EFI boot stub. This is required to use 32-bit EFI services from a
64-bit kernel.
Since EFI boot stub is executed in an identity-mapped region, there's
not much we need to do before invoking the 32-bit EFI boot services.
However, we do reload the firmware's global descriptor table
(efi32_boot_gdt) in case things like timer events are still running in
the firmware.

Both efi_free_boot_services() and efi_enter_virtual_mode() are invoked
from init/main.c, but only if the EFI runtime services are available.
This is not the case for non-native boots, e.g. where a 64-bit kernel is
booted with 32-bit EFI firmware.

Currently, running SetVirtualAddressMap() and passing the physical
address of the virtual map array was working only by a lucky coincidence
because the memory was present in the EFI page table too. Until Toshi
went and booted this on a big HP box - the krealloc() manner of resizing
the memmap we're doing did allocate from such physical addresses which
were not mapped anymore and boom:

One way to take care of that issue is to reimplement the krealloc thing
but with pages. We start with contiguous pages of order 1, i.e. 2 pages,
and when we deplete that memory (shouldn't happen all that often but you
know firmware) we realloc the next power-of-two pages.
Having the pages, it is much more handy and easy to map them into the
EFI page table with the already existing mapping code which we're using
for building the virtual mappings.

It makes more sense to set the feature flag in the success path of the
detection function than it does to rely on the caller doing it. Apart
from it being more logical to group the code and data together, it sets
a much better example for new EFI architectures.

As we grow support for more EFI architectures they're going to want the
ability to query which EFI features are available on the running system.
Instead of storing this information in an architecture-specific place,
stick it in the global 'struct efi', which is already the central
location for EFI state.
While we're at it, let's change the return value of efi_enabled() to be
bool and replace all references to 'facility' with 'feature', which is
the usual word used to describe the attributes of the running system.

This is caused because the layout of the ACPI BGRT header on this system
doesn't match the definition from the ACPI spec, and so we get a bogus
physical address when dereferencing ->image_address in efi_bgrt_init().
Luckily the status field in the BGRT header clearly marks it as invalid,
so we can check that field and skip BGRT initialisation.

CONFIG_X86_32 doesn't map the boot services regions into the EFI memory
map (see commit 700870119f ("x86, efi: Don't map Boot Services on
i386")), and so efi_lookup_mapped_addr() will fail to return a valid
address. Executing the ioremap() path in efi_bgrt_init() causes the
following warning on x86-32 because we're trying to ioremap() RAM,

Fix UV call into kgdb to depend only on whether KGDB is defined
and not both KGDB and KDB. This allows the power nmi command to
use the gdb remote connection if enabled. Note new action of
'kgdb' needs to be set as well to indicate user wants to wait
for gdb to be connected. If it's set to 'kdb' then an error
message is displayed if KDB is not configured.
Also note that if both KGDB and KDB are enabled, then the action
of 'kgdb' or 'kdb' has no affect on which is used. See the KGDB
documentation for further information.

Some code added to the debug_core module had KDB dependencies
that it shouldn't have. Move the KDB dependent REASON back to
the caller to remove the dependency in the debug core code.
Update the call from the UV NMI handler to conform to the new
interface.

the compat no-op stubs. Introducing new users is not what we want to
see at this point in time, as it will break once the stubs are gone.
This also fixes an out of sync __init vs. __cpuinit -- as the former
is real, and the latter is a no-op; hence it would have been a section
mismatch.

When Intel MID finds a match between SFI table from FW and registered
SFI devices, it will always register a device regardless the platform
code was successful or not.
This patch adds an extra option for platform code to return error code
and abort device registration on SFI table parsing.
This patch does not contain any functional changes for current intel
mid platform code.

Use a ring-buffer like multi-version object structure which allows
always having a coherent object; we use this to avoid having to
disable IRQs while reading sched_clock() and avoids a problem when

There's no need to save the runtime map details in global variables, the
values are only required to pass to efi_runtime_map_setup().
And because 'nr_efi_runtime_map' isn't needed, get_nr_runtime_map() can
be deleted along with 'efi_data_len'.

Add a new setup_data type SETUP_EFI for kexec use. Passing the saved
fw_vendor, runtime, config tables and EFI runtime mappings.
When entering virtual mode, directly mapping the EFI runtime regions
which we passed in previously. And skip the step to call
SetVirtualAddressMap().
Specially for HP z420 workstation we need save the smbios physical
address. The kernel boot sequence proceeds in the following order.
Step 2 requires efi.smbios to be the physical address. However, I found
that on HP z420 EFI system table has a virtual address of SMBIOS in step
1. Hence, we need set it back to the physical address with the smbios
in efi_setup_data. (When it is still the physical address, it simply
sets the same value.)
1. efi_init() - Set efi.smbios from EFI system table
2. dmi_scan_machine() - Temporary map efi.smbios to access SMBIOS table
3. efi_enter_virtual_mode() - Map EFI ranges
Tested on ovmf+qemu, lenovo thinkpad, a dell laptop and an
HP z420 workstation.

kexec kernel will need exactly same mapping for EFI runtime memory
ranges. Thus here export the runtime ranges mapping to sysfs,
kexec-tools will assemble them and pass to 2nd kernel via setup_data.
Introducing a new directory /sys/firmware/efi/runtime-map just like
/sys/firmware/memmap. Containing below attribute in each file of that
directory:

Export fw_vendor, runtime and config table physical addresses to
/sys/firmware/efi/{fw_vendor,runtime,config_table} because kexec kernels
need them.
From EFI spec these 3 variables will be updated to virtual address after
entering virtual mode. But kernel startup code will need the physical
address.

Current code check boot service region with kernel text region by:

The end of the above region should be start + size - 1 instead.

Kexec kernel will use saved runtime virtual mapping, so add a new
function efi_map_region_fixed() for directly mapping a md to md->virt.
The md is passed in from 1st kernel, the virtual addr is saved in
md->virt_addr.

UEFI time services are often broken once we're in virtual mode. We were
already refusing to use them on 64-bit systems, but it turns out that
they're also broken on some 32-bit firmware, including the Dell Venue.
Disable them for now, we can revisit once we have the 1:1 mappings code
incorporated.

The SGI UV tlb shootdown code panics the system with a NULL
pointer deference if 'nobau' is specified on the boot
commandline.
uv_flush_tlb_other() gets called for every flush, whether the
BAU is disabled or not. It should not be keeping the s_enters
statistic while the BAU is disabled.
The panic occurs because during initialization
init_per_cpu_tunables() does not set the bcp->statp pointer if
'nobau' was specified.

Replace direct inclusions of <acpi/acpi.h>, <acpi/acpi_bus.h> and
<acpi/acpi_drivers.h>, which are incorrect, with <linux/acpi.h>
inclusions and remove some inclusions of those files that aren't
necessary.
First of all, <acpi/acpi.h>, <acpi/acpi_bus.h> and <acpi/acpi_drivers.h>
should not be included directly from any files that are built for
CONFIG_ACPI unset, because that generally leads to build warnings about
undefined symbols in !CONFIG_ACPI builds. For CONFIG_ACPI set,
<linux/acpi.h> includes those files and for CONFIG_ACPI unset it
provides stub ACPI symbols to be used in that case.
Second, there are ordering dependencies between those files that always
have to be met. Namely, it is required that <acpi/acpi_bus.h> be included
prior to <acpi/acpi_drivers.h> so that the acpi_pci_root declarations the
latter depends on are always there. And <acpi/acpi.h> which provides
basic ACPICA type declarations should always be included prior to any other
ACPI headers in CONFIG_ACPI builds. That also is taken care of including
<linux/acpi.h> as appropriate.

Consider a kernel crash in a module, simulated the following way:

When we turn off FRAME_POINTERs, the very first instruction in
that function causes a BUG. The problem is that we print IP in
the BUG report using %pB (from printk_address). And %pB
decrements the pointer by one to fix printing addresses of
functions with tail calls.
This was added in commit 71f9e59800 ("x86, dumpstack: Use
%pB format specifier for stack trace") to fix the call stack
printouts.
So instead of correct output:

This reverts commit 8eba18428a.
uv_trace() is not used by anything, nor is uv_trace_nmi_func, nor
uv_trace_func.
That's not how we do instrumentation code in the kernel: we add
tracepoints, printk()s, etc. so that everyone not just those with
magic kernel modules can debug a system.
So remove this unused (and misguied) piece of code.

adds a __cpuinit.
We removed this a couple versions ago; we now want to remove
the compat no-op stubs. Introducing new users is not what
we want to see at this point in time, as it will break once
the stubs are gone.

We map the EFI regions needed for runtime services non-contiguously,
with preserved alignment on virtual addresses starting from -4G down
for a total max space of 64G. This way, we provide for stable runtime
services addresses across kernels so that a kexec'd kernel can still use
them.
Thus, they're mapped in a separate pagetable so that we don't pollute
the kernel namespace.
Add an efi= kernel command line parameter for passing miscellaneous
options and chicken bits from the command line.
While at it, add a chicken bit called "efi=old_map" which can be used as
a fallback to the old runtime services mapping method in case there's
some b0rkage with a particular EFI implementation (haha, it is hard to
hold up the sarcasm here...).
Also, add the UEFI RT VA space to Documentation/x86/x86_64/mm.txt.

It's incredibly difficult to diagnose early EFI boot issues without
special hardware because earlyprintk=vga doesn't work on EFI systems.
Add support for writing to the EFI framebuffer, via earlyprintk=efi,
which will actually give users a chance of providing debug output.

As Intel rolling out more SoC's after Moorestown, we need to
re-structure the code in a way that is backward compatible and easy to
expand. This patch implements a flexible way to support multiple boards
and devices.
This patch does not add any new functional support. It just refactors
the existing code to increase the modularity and decrease the code
duplication for supporting multiple soc's and boards.
Currently intel-mid.c has both board and soc related code in one file.
This patch moves the board related code to new files and let linker
script to create SFI devite table following this:
1. Move the SFI device specific code to
arch/x86/platform/intel-mid/device-libs/platform_<device>.*
A new device file is added for every supported device. This code will
get conditionally compiled by using corresponding device driver
CONFIG option.
2. Move the device_ids location to .x86_intel_mid_dev.init section by
using new sfi_device() macro.
This patch was based on previous code from Sathyanarayanan Kuppuswamy.

SFI device_id[] table parsing code is duplicated in every SFI
device handler. This patch removes this code duplication, by
adding a seperate function get_device_id() to parse through the
device table. Also this patch moves the SPI, I2C, IPC info code from
sfi_parse_devs() to respective device handlers.

mrst is used as common name to represent all intel_mid type
soc's. But moorsetwon is just one of the intel_mid soc. So
renamed them to use intel_mid.
This patch mainly renames the variables and related
functions that uses *mrst* prefix with *intel_mid*.
To ensure that there are no functional changes, I have compared
the objdump of related files before and after rename and found
the only difference is symbol and name changes.

This patch restores the capability to enter KDB (and KGDB) from
the UV NMI handler. This is needed because the UV system
console is not capable of sending the 'break' signal to the
serial console port. It is also useful when the kernel is hung
in such a way that it isn't responding to normal external I/O,
so sending 'g' to sysreq-trigger does not work either.
Another benefit of the external NMI command is that all the cpus
receive the NMI signal at roughly the same time so they are more
closely aligned timewise.
It utilizes the newly added kgdb_nmicallin function to gain
entry to KGDB/KDB by the master. The slaves still enter via the
standard kgdb_nmicallback function. It also uses the new
'send_ready' pointer to tell KGDB/KDB to signal the slaves when
to proceed into the KGDB slave loop.
It is enabled when the nmi action is set to "kdb" and the kernel
is built with CONFIG_KDB enabled. Note that if kgdb is
connected that interface will be used instead.

If a system has hung and it no longer responds to external
events, this patch adds the capability of doing a standard kdump
and system reboot then triggered by the system NMI command.
It is enabled when the nmi action is changed to "kdump" and the
kernel is built with CONFIG_KEXEC enabled.

The standard NMI handler dumps the states of all the cpus. This
includes a full register dump and stack trace. This can be way
more information than what is needed. This patch adds a
"summary" dump that is basically a form of the "ps" command. It
includes the symbolic IP address as well as the command field
and basic process information.
It is enabled when the nmi action is changed to "ips".

The current UV NMI handler has not been updated for the changes
in the system NMI handler and the perf operations. The UV NMI
handler reads an MMR in the UV Hub to check to see if the NMI
event was caused by the external 'system NMI' that the operator
can initiate on the System Mgmt Controller.
The problem arises when the perf tools are running, causing
millions of perf events per second on very large CPU count
systems. Previously this was okay because the perf NMI handler
ran at a higher priority on the NMI call chain and if the NMI
was a perf event, it would stop calling other NMI handlers
remaining on the NMI call chain.
Now the system NMI handler calls all the handlers on the NMI
call chain including the UV NMI handler. This causes the UV NMI
handler to read the MMRs at the same millions per second rate.
This can lead to significant performance loss and possible
system failures. It also can cause thousands of 'Dazed and
Confused' messages being sent to the system console. This
effectively makes perf tools unusable on UV systems.
To avoid this excessive overhead when perf tools are running,
this code has been optimized to minimize reading of the MMRs as
much as possible, by moving to the NMI_UNKNOWN notifier chain.
This chain is called only when all the users on the standard
NMI_LOCAL call chain have been called and none of them have
claimed this NMI.
There is an exception where the NMI_LOCAL notifier chain is
used. When the perf tools are in use, it's possible that the UV
NMI was captured by some other NMI handler and then either
ignored or mistakenly processed as a perf event. We set a
per_cpu ('ping') flag for those CPUs that ignored the initial
NMI, and then send them an IPI NMI signal. The NMI_LOCAL
handler on each cpu does not need to read the MMR, but instead
checks the in memory flag indicating it was pinged. There are
two module variables, 'ping_count' indicating how many requested
NMI events occurred, and 'ping_misses' indicating how many stray
NMI events. These most likely are perf events so it shows the
overhead of the perf NMI interrupts and how many MMR reads were avoided.
This patch also minimizes the reads of the MMRs by having the
first cpu entering the NMI handler on each node set a per HUB
in-memory atomic value. (Having a per HUB value avoids sending
lock traffic over NumaLink.) Both types of UV NMIs from the SMI
layer are supported.

This patch moves the UV NMI support from the x2apic file to a
new separate uv_nmi.c file in preparation for the next sequence
of patches. It prevents upcoming bloat of the x2apic file, and
has the added benefit of putting the upcoming /sys/module
parameters under the name 'uv_nmi' instead of 'x2apic_uv_x',
which was obscure.

Due to the workaround described in commit 916f676f8 ("x86, efi: Retain
boot service code until after switching to virtual mode") EFI Boot
Service regions are mapped for a period during boot. Unfortunately, with
the limited size of the i386 direct kernel map it's possible that some
of the Boot Service regions will not be directly accessible, which
causes them to be ioremap()'d, triggering the above warning as the
regions are marked as E820_RAM in the e820 memmap.
There are currently only two situations where we need to map EFI Boot
Service regions,
1. To workaround the firmware bug described in 916f676f8
2. To access the ACPI BGRT image
but since we haven't seen an i386 implementation that requires either,
this simple fix should suffice for now.

efi_lookup_mapped_addr() is a handy utility for other platforms than
x86. Move it from arch/x86 to drivers/firmware. Add memmap pointer
to global efi structure, and initialise it on x86.

Common to (U)EFI support on all platforms is the global "efi" data
structure, and the code that parses the System Table to locate
addresses to populate that structure with.
This patch adds both of these to the global EFI driver code and
removes the local definition of the global "efi" data structure from
the x86 and ia64 code.
Squashed into one big patch to avoid breaking bisection.

The __cpuinit type of throwaway sections might have made sense
some time ago when RAM was more constrained, but now the savings
do not offset the cost and complications. For example, the fix in
commit 5e427ec2d0 ("x86: Fix bit corruption at CPU resume time")
is a good example of the nasty type of bugs that can be created
with improper use of the various __init prefixes.
After a discussion on LKML[1] it was decided that cpuinit should go
the way of devinit and be phased out. Once all the users are gone,
we can then finally remove the macros themselves from linux/init.h.
Note that some harmless section mismatch warnings may result, since
notify_cpu_starting() and cpu_up() are arch independent (kernel/cpu.c)
are flagged as __cpuinit -- so if we remove the __cpuinit from
arch specific callers, we will also get section mismatch warnings.
As an intermediate step, we intend to turn the linux/init.h cpuinit
content into no-ops as early as possible, since that will get rid
of these warnings. In any case, they are temporary and harmless.
This removes all the arch/x86 uses of the __cpuinit macros from
all C files. x86 only had the one __CPUINIT used in assembly files,
and it wasn't paired off with a .previous or a __FINIT, so we can
delete it directly w/o any corresponding additional change there.

This patch reworks the UEFI anti-bricking code, including an effective
reversion of cc5a080c and 31ff2f20. It turns out that calling
QueryVariableInfo() from boot services results in some firmware
implementations jumping to physical addresses even after entering virtual
mode, so until we have 1:1 mappings for UEFI runtime space this isn't
going to work so well.
Reverting these gets us back to the situation where we'd refuse to create
variables on some systems because they classify deleted variables as "used"
until the firmware triggers a garbage collection run, which they won't do
until they reach a lower threshold. This results in it being impossible to
install a bootloader, which is unhelpful.
Feedback from Samsung indicates that the firmware doesn't need more than
5KB of storage space for its own purposes, so that seems like a reasonable
threshold. However, there's still no guarantee that a platform will attempt
garbage collection merely because it drops below this threshold. It seems
that this is often only triggered if an attempt to write generates a
genuine EFI_OUT_OF_RESOURCES error. We can force that by attempting to
create a variable larger than the remaining space. This should fail, but if
it somehow succeeds we can then immediately delete it.
I've tested this on the UEFI machines I have available, but I don't have
a Samsung and so can't verify that it avoids the bricking problem.

We need to map boot services regions during startup in order to avoid
firmware bugs, but we shouldn't be passing those regions to
SetVirtualAddressMap(). Ensure that we're only passing regions that are
marked as being mapped at runtime.

The patch "x86: Increase precision of x86_platform.get/set_wallclock"
changed the x86 platform set_wallclock/get_wallclock interfaces to
use nsec granular timespecs instead of a second granular interface.
However, that patch missed converting the vrtc code, so this patch
converts those functions to use timespecs.

All the virtualized platforms (KVM, lguest and Xen) have persistent
wallclocks that have more than one second of precision.
read_persistent_wallclock() and update_persistent_wallclock() allow
for nanosecond precision but their implementation on x86 with
x86_platform.get/set_wallclock() only allows for one second precision.
This means guests may see a wallclock time that is off by up to 1
second.
Make set_wallclock() and get_wallclock() take a struct timespec
parameter (which allows for nanosecond precision) so KVM and Xen
guests may start with a more accurate wallclock time and a Xen dom0
can maintain a more accurate wallclock for guests.

Using this parameter one can disable the storage_size/2 check if
he is really sure that the UEFI does sane gc and fulfills the spec.
This parameter is useful if a devices uses more than 50% of the
storage by default.

EFI implementations distinguish between space that is actively used by a
variable and space that merely hasn't been garbage collected yet. Space
that hasn't yet been garbage collected isn't available for use and so isn't
counted in the remaining_space field returned by QueryVariableInfo().
Combined with commit 68d9298 this can cause problems. Some implementations
don't garbage collect until the remaining space is smaller than the maximum
variable size, and as a result check_var_size() will always fail once more
than 50% of the variable store has been used even if most of that space is
marked as available for garbage collection. The user is unable to create
new variables, and deleting variables doesn't increase the remaining space.
The problem that 68d9298 was attempting to avoid was one where certain
platforms fail if the actively used space is greater than 50% of the
available storage space. We should be able to calculate that by simply
summing the size of each available variable and subtracting that from
the total storage space. With luck this will fix the problem described in
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=55471 without permitting
damage to occur to the machines 68d9298 was attempting to fix.

EFI variables can be flagged as being accessible only within boot services.
This makes it awkward for us to figure out how much space they use at
runtime. In theory we could figure this out by simply comparing the results
from QueryVariableInfo() to the space used by all of our variables, but
that fails if the platform doesn't garbage collect on every boot. Thankfully,
calling QueryVariableInfo() while still inside boot services gives a more
reliable answer. This patch passes that information from the EFI boot stub
up to the efi platform code.

Let's not burden ia64 with checks in the common efivars code that we're not
writing too much data to the variable store. That kind of thing is an x86
firmware bug, plain and simple.
efi_query_variable_store() provides platforms with a wrapper in which they can
perform checks and workarounds for EFI variable storage bugs.

Every 11 minutes ntp attempts to update the x86 rtc with the current
system time. Currently, the x86 code only updates the rtc if the system
time is within +/-15 minutes of the current value of the rtc. This
was done originally to avoid setting the RTC if the RTC was in localtime
mode (common with Windows dualbooting). Other architectures do a full
synchronization and now that we have better infrastructure to detect
when the RTC is in localtime, there is no reason that x86 should be
software limited to a 30 minute window.
This patch changes the behavior of the kernel to do a full synchronization
(year, month, day, hour, minute, and second) of the rtc when ntp requests
a synchronization between the system time and the rtc.
I've used the RTC library functions in this patchset as they do all the
required bounds checking.

"This is a huge set of several partly interrelated (and concurrently
developed) changes, which is why the branch history is messier than
one would like.
The *really* big items are two humonguous patchsets mostly developed
by Yinghai Lu at my request, which completely revamps the way we
create initial page tables. In particular, rather than estimating how
much memory we will need for page tables and then build them into that
memory -- a calculation that has shown to be incredibly fragile -- we
now build them (on 64 bits) with the aid of a "pseudo-linear mode" --
a #PF handler which creates temporary page tables on demand.
This has several advantages:
1. It makes it much easier to support things that need access to data
very early (a followon patchset uses this to load microcode way
early in the kernel startup).
2. It allows the kernel and all the kernel data objects to be invoked
from above the 4 GB limit. This allows kdump to work on very large
systems.
3. It greatly reduces the difference between Xen and native (Xen's
equivalent of the #PF handler are the temporary page tables created
by the domain builder), eliminating a bunch of fragile hooks.
The patch series also gets us a bit closer to W^X.
Additional work in this pull is the 64-bit get_user() work which you
were also involved with, and a bunch of cleanups/speedups to
__phys_addr()/__pa()."

commit 1de63d60cd ("efi: Clear EFI_RUNTIME_SERVICES rather than
EFI_BOOT by "noefi" boot parameter") attempted to make "noefi" true to
its documentation and disable EFI runtime services to prevent the
bricking bug described in commit e0094244e4 ("samsung-laptop:
Disable on EFI hardware"). However, it's not possible to clear
EFI_RUNTIME_SERVICES from an early param function because
EFI_RUNTIME_SERVICES is set in efi_init() *after* parse_early_param().
This resulted in "noefi" effectively becoming a no-op and no longer
providing users with a way to disable EFI, which is bad for those
users that have buggy machines.

There was a serious problem in samsung-laptop that its platform driver is
designed to run under BIOS and running under EFI can cause the machine to
become bricked or can cause Machine Check Exceptions.

Unfortunately this problem comes back again if users specify "noefi" option.
This parameter clears EFI_BOOT and that driver continues to run even if running
under EFI. Refer to the document, this parameter should clear
EFI_RUNTIME_SERVICES instead.

This patch updates time support for the SGI UV3 hub. Since the UV2
and UV3 time support is identical, "is_uvx_hub" is used instead of

Originally 'efi_enabled' indicated whether a kernel was booted from
EFI firmware. Over time its semantics have changed, and it now
indicates whether or not we are booted on an EFI machine with
bit-native firmware, e.g. 64-bit kernel with 64-bit firmware.
The immediate motivation for this patch is the bug report at,
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-cdimage/+bug/1040557
which details how running a platform driver on an EFI machine that is
designed to run under BIOS can cause the machine to become
bricked. Also, the following report,

details how running said driver can also cause Machine Check
Exceptions. Drivers need a new means of detecting whether they're
running on an EFI machine, as sadly the expression,
if (!efi_enabled)
hasn't been a sufficient condition for quite some time.
Users actually want to query 'efi_enabled' for different reasons -
what they really want access to is the list of available EFI
facilities.
For instance, the x86 reboot code needs to know whether it can invoke
the ResetSystem() function provided by the EFI runtime services, while
the ACPI OSL code wants to know whether the EFI config tables were
mapped successfully. There are also checks in some of the platform
driver code to simply see if they're running on an EFI machine (which
would make it a bad idea to do BIOS-y things).
This patch is a prereq for the samsung-laptop fix patch.

The second argument of ACPI driver .remove() operation is only used
by the ACPI processor driver and the value passed to that driver
through it is always available from the given struct acpi_device
object's removal_type field. For this reason, the second ACPI driver
.remove() argument is in fact useless, so drop it.

The Technologic Systems TS-5500 is an x86-based (AMD Elan SC520)
single board computer. This driver registers most of its devices
and exposes sysfs attributes for information such as jumpers'
state or presence of some of its options.
This driver currently registers the TS-5500 platform, its
on-board LED, 2 pin blocks (GPIO) and its analog/digital
converter. It can be extended to support other Technologic
Systems products, such as the TS-5600.

efi.runtime_version is erroneously being set to the value of the
vendor's firmware revision instead of that of the implemented EFI
specification. We can't deduce which EFI functions are available based
on the revision of the vendor's firmware since the version scheme is
likely to be unique to each vendor.
What we really need to know is the revision of the implemented EFI
specification, which is available in the EFI System Table header.
