Gen8 and prior Proliant systems supported the "CRU" interface
to firmware. This interfaces allows linux to "call back" into firmware
to source the cause of an NMI. This feature isn't fully utilized
as the actual source of the NMI isn't printed, the driver only
indicates that the source couldn't be determined when the call
fails.
With the advent of Gen9, iCRU replaces the CRU. The call back
feature is no longer available in firmware. To be compatible and
not attempt to call back into firmware on system not supporting CRU,
the SMBIOS table is consulted to determine if it is safe to
make the call back or not.
This results in about half of the driver code being devoted
to either making CRU calls or determing if it is safe to make
CRU calls. As noted, the driver isn't really using the results of
the CRU calls.
Furthermore, as a consequence of the Spectre security issue, the
BIOS/EFI calls are being wrapped into Spectre-disabling section.
Removing the call back in hpwdt_pretimeout assists in this effort.
As the CRU sourcing of the NMI isn't required for handling the
NMI and there are security concerns with making the call back, remove
the legacy (pre Gen9) NMI sourcing and the DMI code to determine if
the system had the CRU interface.

commit 4cd13c21b2 ("softirq: Let ksoftirqd do its job") has the
effect of deferring timer handling in case of high CPU load, hence
delaying the delayed work allthought the worker is running which
high realtime priority.
As hrtimers are not managed by softirqs, this patch replaces the
delayed work by a plain work and uses an hrtimer to schedule that work.

If the watchdog hardware is enabled/running during boot, e.g.
due to a boot loader configuring it, we must tell the
watchdog framework about this fact so that it can ping the
watchdog until userspace opens the device and takes over
control.
Do so using the WDOG_HW_RUNNING flag that exists for exactly
that use-case.
Given the watchdog driver core doesn't know what timeout was
originally set by whoever started the watchdog (boot loader),
we make sure to update the timeout in the hardware according
to what the watchdog core thinks it is.

When the watchdog device is suspended, its timeout is set to the maximum
value. During resume, the previously set timeout should be restored.
This does not work at the moment.
The suspend function calls
imx2_wdt_set_timeout(wdog, IMX2_WDT_MAX_TIME);
and resume reverts this by calling
imx2_wdt_set_timeout(wdog, wdog->timeout);
However, imx2_wdt_set_timeout() updates wdog->timeout. Therefore,
wdog->timeout is set to IMX2_WDT_MAX_TIME when we enter the resume
function.
Fix this by adding a new function __imx2_wdt_set_timeout() which
only updates the hardware settings. imx2_wdt_set_timeout() now calls
__imx2_wdt_set_timeout() and then saves the new timeout to
wdog->timeout.
During suspend, we call __imx2_wdt_set_timeout() directly so that
wdog->timeout won't be updated and we can restore the previous value
during resume. This approach makes wdog->timeout different from the
actual setting in the hardware which is usually not a good thing.
However, the two differ only while we're suspended and no kernel code is
running, so it should be ok in this case.

When running a command like 'chrt -f 50 dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/null',
the watchdog_worker fails to service the HW watchdog and the
HW watchdog fires long before the watchdog soft timeout.
At the moment, the watchdog_worker is invoked as a delayed work.
Delayed works are handled by non realtime kernel threads. The
WQ_HIGHPRI flag only increases the niceness of that threads.
This patch replaces the delayed work logic by kthread delayed work,
and sets the associated kernel task to SCHED_FIFO with the highest
priority, in order to ensure that the watchdog worker will run as
soon as possible.

Change the xen_wdt driver to use the watchdog subsystem instead of
registering and manipulating the char device directly through the misc
API. This is mainly getting rid of the "write" and "ioctl" methods and
part of the watchdog control logic (which are all implemented by the
watchdog subsystem).
Even though the watchdog subsystem supports registering and handling
multiple watchdog devices at the same time, the xen_wdt driver has an
inherent limitation of only one device due to the way the Xen hypervisor
exposes watchdog functionality. However, the driver can now coexist with
other watchdog devices (supported by different drivers).

The watchdog core includes a worker function which pings the
watchdog until user app starts pinging it and which also
pings it if the HW require more frequent pings.
Use that function instead of the dedicated timer.
In the mean time, we can allow the user to change the timeout.
Then change the timeout module parameter to use seconds and
use the watchdog_init_timeout() core function.
On some HW (eg: the 8xx), SWCRR contains bits unrelated to the
watchdog which have to be preserved upon write.

The first patch above (https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/9970181/)
makes the oops go away, but it just papers over the problem. The real
problem is that the watchdog core clears WDOG_HW_RUNNING in
watchdog_stop, and the gpio driver fails to set it in its stop
function when it doesn't actually stop it. This means that the core
doesn't know that it now has responsibility for petting the device, in
turn causing the device to reset the system (I hadn't noticed this
because the board I'm working on has that reset logic disabled).
How about this (other drivers may of course have the same problem, I
haven't checked). One might say that ->stop should return an error
when the device can't be stopped, but OTOH this brings parity between
a device without a ->stop method and a GPIO wd that has always-running
set. IOW, I think ->stop should only return an error when an actual
attempt to stop the hardware failed.
From: Rasmus Villemoes <rasmus.villemoes@prevas.dk>
The watchdog framework clears WDOG_HW_RUNNING before calling
->stop. If the driver is unable to stop the device, it is supposed to
set that bit again so that the watchdog core takes care of sending
heart-beats while the device is not open from user-space. Update the
gpio_wdt driver to honour that contract (and get rid of the redundant
clearing of WDOG_HW_RUNNING).

An unintended post-condition of probe() is that the watchdog is

write is unnecessary because the cached control value that is

counter will not be increased and kref_get() will not be called when
registering the watchdog. Subsequently, on open, this does not happen
either because the code believes that it was already done because the
hardware watchdog is marked as running.
We could introduce a state variable to indicate this state, but let's
just increase the module use counter and call kref_get() unconditionally

If a watchdog driver's open function sets WDOG_HW_RUNNING with the
expectation that the watchdog can not be stopped, but then stops the

Pull timer updates from Thomas Gleixner:
"Yet another big pile of changes:
- More year 2038 work from Arnd slowly reaching the point where we
need to think about the syscalls themself.
- A new timer function which allows to conditionally (re)arm a timer
only when it's either not running or the new expiry time is sooner
than the armed expiry time. This allows to use a single timer for
multiple timeout requirements w/o caring about the first expiry
time at the call site.
- A new NMI safe accessor to clock real time for the printk timestamp
work. Can be used by tracing, perf as well if required.
- A large number of timer setup conversions from Kees which got
collected here because either maintainers requested so or they
simply got ignored. As Kees pointed out already there are a few
trivial merge conflicts and some redundant commits which was
unavoidable due to the size of this conversion effort.
- Avoid a redundant iteration in the timer wheel softirq processing.
- Provide a mechanism to treat RTC implementations depending on their
hardware properties, i.e. don't inflict the write at the 0.5
seconds boundary which originates from the PC CMOS RTC to all RTCs.
No functional change as drivers need to be updated separately.
- The usual small updates to core code clocksource drivers. Nothing
really exciting"

Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which
makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license.
By default all files without license information are under the default
license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2.
Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0'
SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding
shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text.
This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and
Philippe Ombredanne.
How this work was done:
Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of
the use cases:
- file had no licensing information it it.
- file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it,
- file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information,
Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases
where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license
had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords.
The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to
a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the
output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX
tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the
base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files.
The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files
assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner
results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s)
to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not
immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was:
- Files considered eligible had to be source code files.
- Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5
lines of source
- File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5
lines).
All documentation files were explicitly excluded.
The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license
identifiers to apply.
- when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was
considered to have no license information in it, and the top level
COPYING file license applied.
For non */uapi/* files that summary was:
SPDX license identifier # files
---------------------------------------------------|-------
GPL-2.0 11139
and resulted in the first patch in this series.
If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH
Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was:
SPDX license identifier # files
---------------------------------------------------|-------
GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930
and resulted in the second patch in this series.
- if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one
of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if
any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in
it (per prior point). Results summary:
SPDX license identifier # files
---------------------------------------------------|------
GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270
GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17
LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15
GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14
((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5
LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4
LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1
and that resulted in the third patch in this series.
- when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became
the concluded license(s).
- when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a
license but the other didn't, or they both detected different
licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred.
- In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file
resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and
which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics).
- When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was
confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
- If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier,
the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later
in time.
In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the
spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the
source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation
by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from
FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners
disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The
Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so
they are related.
Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets
for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the
files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks
in about 15000 files.
In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have
copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the
correct identifier.
Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual
inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch
version early this week with:
- a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected
license ids and scores
- reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+
files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct
- reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license
was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied
SPDX license was correct
This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This
worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the
different types of files to be modified.
These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to
parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the
format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg
based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to
distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different
comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to
generate the patches.

The error margin of the clks_per_second variable was too large and
caused offsets when used with clock frequencies which left a remainder
after applying the dividers. Now we always calculate directly using the
clock rate and the divider using some helper macros. That also means
that DIV_ROUND_UP moves from probe to the multiplication macro. In
probe, we don't need to ensure anymore that 'clks_per_sec' would go too
fast but rather ensure that the lower limit is really at least 1 to
certainly get a full cycle.

The watchdog IP block on Meson8 and Meson8m2 is already supported by the
existing meson-wdt driver. Meson8 uses the same register bits as Meson6,
while the newer Meson8m2 SoC uses the same register bits as Meson8b.
Currently watchdog support on Meson8 SoC already works because
meson8.dtsi simply uses the "amlogic,meson6-wdt" compatible. Adding a
separate compatible for Meson8 makes this more explicit though.

is not specified in the devicetree, the reset framework will just skip
deasserting and continue.
This way all users of the driver will continue to function without
any harm, even if the reset line is not specified in the devicetree.

The ICH9 is listed as having TCO v2, and indeed the behavior in the
datasheet corresponds to v2 (for example the NO_REBOOT flag is
accessible via the 16KiB-aligned Root Complex Base Address).
However, the TCO counts twice just like in v1; the documentation
of the SECOND_TO_STS bit says: "ICH9 sets this bit to 1 to indicate
that the TIMEOUT bit had been (or is currently) set and a second
timeout occurred before the TCO_RLD register was written. If this
bit is set and the NO_REBOOT config bit is 0, then the ICH9 will
reboot the system after the second timeout. The same can be found
in the BayTrail (Atom E3800) datasheet, and even HOWTOs around
the Internet say that it will reboot after _twice_ the specified
heartbeat.
I did not find the Apollo Lake datasheet, but because v4/v5 has
a SECOND_TO_STS bit just like the previous version I'm enabling
this for Apollo Lake as well.

Merge tag 'hwparam-20170420' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/dhowells/linux-fs
Pull hw lockdown support from David Howells:
"Annotation of module parameters that configure hardware resources
including ioports, iomem addresses, irq lines and dma channels.
This allows a future patch to prohibit the use of such module
parameters to prevent that hardware from being abused to gain access
to the running kernel image as part of locking the kernel down under
UEFI secure boot conditions.
Annotations are made by changing:
module_param(n, t, p)
module_param_named(n, v, t, p)
module_param_array(n, t, m, p)
to:
module_param_hw(n, t, hwtype, p)
module_param_hw_named(n, v, t, hwtype, p)
module_param_hw_array(n, t, hwtype, m, p)
where the module parameter refers to a hardware setting
hwtype specifies the type of the resource being configured. This can
be one of:
ioport Module parameter configures an I/O port
iomem Module parameter configures an I/O mem address
ioport_or_iomem Module parameter could be either (runtime set)
irq Module parameter configures an I/O port
dma Module parameter configures a DMA channel
dma_addr Module parameter configures a DMA buffer address
other Module parameter configures some other value
Note that the hwtype is compile checked, but not currently stored (the
lockdown code probably won't require it). It is, however, there for
future use.
A bonus is that the hwtype can also be used for grepping.
The intention is for the kernel to ignore or reject attempts to set
annotated module parameters if lockdown is enabled. This applies to
options passed on the boot command line, passed to insmod/modprobe or
direct twiddling in /sys/module/ parameter files.
The module initialisation then needs to handle the parameter not being
set, by (1) giving an error, (2) probing for a value or (3) using a
reasonable default.
What I can't do is just reject a module out of hand because it may
take a hardware setting in the module parameters. Some important
modules, some ipmi stuff for instance, both probe for hardware and
allow hardware to be manually specified; if the driver is aborts with
any error, you don't get any ipmi hardware.
Further, trying to do this entirely in the module initialisation code
doesn't protect against sysfs twiddling.
[!] Note that in and of itself, this series of patches should have no
effect on the the size of the kernel or code execution - that is
left to a patch in the next series to effect. It does mark
annotated kernel parameters with a KERNEL_PARAM_FL_HWPARAM flag in
an already existing field"

iTCO_wdt no_reboot_bit set/unset functions has lot of common code between
them. So merging these two functions into a single update function would
remove these unnecessary code duplications. This patch fixes this issue
by creating a no_reboot_bit update function to handle both set/unset
functions.
Also checking for iTCO version every time you make no_reboot_bit set/unset
call is inefficient and makes the code look complex. This can be improved
by performing this check once during device probe and selecting the
appropriate no_reboot_bit update function. This patch fixes this issue

When the kernel is running in secure boot mode, we lock down the kernel to
prevent userspace from modifying the running kernel image. Whilst this
includes prohibiting access to things like /dev/mem, it must also prevent
access by means of configuring driver modules in such a way as to cause a
device to access or modify the kernel image.
To this end, annotate module_param* statements that refer to hardware
configuration and indicate for future reference what type of parameter they
specify. The parameter parser in the core sees this information and can
skip such parameters with an error message if the kernel is locked down.
The module initialisation then runs as normal, but just sees whatever the
default values for those parameters is.
Note that we do still need to do the module initialisation because some
drivers have viable defaults set in case parameters aren't specified and
some drivers support automatic configuration (e.g. PNP or PCI) in addition
to manually coded parameters.
This patch annotates drivers in drivers/watchdog/.

Checking for timer expiration is done from the softirq TIMER_SOFTIRQ.
Since commit 4cd13c21b2 ("softirq: Let ksoftirqd do its job"),
pending softirqs are no longer always handled immediately, instead,
if there are pending softirqs, and ksoftirqd is in state TASK_RUNNING,
the handling of the softirqs are deferred, and are instead supposed
to be handled by ksoftirqd, when ksoftirqd gets scheduled.
If a user space process with a real-time policy starts to misbehave
by never relinquishing the CPU while ksoftirqd is in state TASK_RUNNING,
what will happen is that all softirqs will get deferred, while ksoftirqd,
which is supposed to handle the deferred softirqs, will never get to run.
To make sure that the watchdog is able to fire even when we do not get

In soft (no-reboot) mode, the driver self-pings watchdog upon expiration
of an interrupt. However the interrupt itself was not cleared thus on
first hit, the system enters infinite interrupt handling loop.
On Odroid U3 (Exynos4412), when booted with s3c2410_wdt.soft_noboot=1
argument the console is flooded:
# killall -9 watchdog
[ 60.523760] s3c2410-wdt 10060000.watchdog: watchdog timer expired (irq)
[ 60.536744] s3c2410-wdt 10060000.watchdog: watchdog timer expired (irq)
Fix this by writing something to the WTCLRINT register to clear the
interrupt. The register WTCLRINT however appeared in S3C6410 so a new
watchdog quirk and flavor are needed.

It occurred to me that the panic pretimeout governor will stall the
softdog, because it is purely software which simply breaks when the
kernel panics. Testing governors with the softdog on the other hand is
really useful, so make this feature a compile time option which nees to
be enabled explicitly. This also removes the overhead if pretimeout
support is not used because it will now be compiled away (saving ~10% on

Many watchdog drivers explicitly stop the watchdog when unregistering it.
While it is unclear if this is actually needed (the whatdog should not be
running at that time if it can be stopped), introduce a helper to
explicitly stop the watchdog in the watchdog core when unregistering it.
This helps reducing driver code size while retaining functionality.

Such chip is often found on current Gigabyte motherboards, it is allegedly

device open to ensure that even if power down process get stuck the
platform reboots nonetheless.
The iamt_wdt is an alarm-only watchdog and can't reboot system, but the
FW will generate an alarm event reboot was completed in time, as the
watchdog is not automatically disabled during power cycle.
So we should request stop watchdog on reboot to eliminate wrong alarm

The change adds watchdog pretimeout notification handling to imx2_wdt
driver, if device data contains information about a valid interrupt.
It is unlikely but still possible (e.g. through a software limitation)
that only a subset of watchdogs on SoC has interrupt lines, hence
functionally the devices from these two groups have different
capabilities, and this is reflected in different watchdog_info
structs assigned to the devices.

The change converts watchdog device attribute "pretimeout_governor" from
read-only to read-write type to allow users to select a desirable
watchdog pretimeout governor in runtime, e.g.
% echo -n panic > /sys/..../watchdog/watchdog0/pretimeout
To get this working a list of registered pretimeout governors is created
and a new helper function watchdog_pretimeout_governor_set() is exported
to watchdog_dev.c.
If a selected governor is gone, a watchdog device pretimeout notification
is delegated to a default built-in pretimeout governor.

The change adds panic watchdog pretimeout governor, on watchdog
pretimeout event the kernel shall panic. In general watchdog
pretimeout event means that something essentially bad is going on the
system, for example a process scheduler stalls or watchdog feeder is
killed due to OOM, so printing out information attendant to panic and
before likely unavoidable reboot caused by a watchdog may help to
determine a root cause of the issue.

The change adds noop watchdog pretimeout governor, only an
informational message is printed to the kernel log buffer when a
watchdog triggers a pretimeout event.
While introducing the first pretimeout governor the selected design
assumes that the default pretimeout governor is selected by its name
and it is always built-in, thus the default pretimeout governor can
not be unregistered and the correspondent check can be removed from
the watchdog_unregister_governor() function.

The change adds a simple watchdog pretimeout framework infrastructure,
its purpose is to allow users to select a desired handling of watchdog
pretimeout events, which may be generated by some watchdog devices.
A user selects a default watchdog pretimeout governor during
compilation stage.
Watchdogs with WDIOF_PRETIMEOUT capability now have one more device
attribute in sysfs, pretimeout_governor attribute is intended to display
the selected watchdog pretimeout governor.
The framework has no impact at runtime on watchdog devices with no
WDIOF_PRETIMEOUT capability set.
