'default n' is the default value for any bool or tristate Kconfig
setting so there is no need to write it explicitly.
Also since commit f467c5640c ("kconfig: only write '# CONFIG_FOO
is not set' for visible symbols") the Kconfig behavior is the same
regardless of 'default n' being present or not:

One side effect of (and the main motivation for) this change is making
the following two definitions behave exactly the same:
config FOO
bool
config FOO
bool
default n
With this change, neither of these will generate a
'# CONFIG_FOO is not set' line (assuming FOO isn't selected/implied).
That might make it clearer to people that a bare 'default n' is
redundant.

This commit adds a new trigger responsible for turning on LED when USB
device gets connected to the selected USB port. This can can useful for
various home routers that have USB port(s) and a proper LED telling user
a device is connected.
The trigger gets its documentation file but basically it just requires
enabling it and selecting USB ports (e.g. echo 1 > ports/usb1-1).
There was a long discussion on design of this driver. Its current state
is a result of picking them most adjustable solution as others couldn't
handle all cases.
1) It wasn't possible for the driver to register separated trigger for
each USB port. Some physical USB ports are handled by more than one
controller and so by more than one USB port. E.g. USB 2.0 physical
port may be handled by OHCI's port and EHCI's port.
It's also not possible to assign more than 1 trigger to a single LED
and implementing such feature would be tricky due to syncing triggers
and sysfs conflicts with old triggers.
2) Another idea was to register trigger per USB hub. This wouldn't allow
handling devices with multiple USB LEDs and controllers (hubs)
controlling more than 1 physical port. It's common for hubs to have
few ports and each may have its own LED.
This final trigger is highly flexible. It allows selecting any USB ports
for any LED. It was also modified (comparing to the initial version) to
allow choosing ports rather than having user /guess/ proper names. It
was successfully tested on SmartRG SR400ac which has 3 USB LEDs,
2 physical ports and 3 controllers.
It was noted USB subsystem already has usb-gadget and usb-host triggers
but they are pretty trivial ones. They indicate activity only and can't
have ports specified.
In future it may be good idea to consider adding activity support to
usbport as well. This should allow switching to this more generic driver
and maybe marking old ones as obsolete.
This can be implemented with another sysfs file for setting mode. The
default mode wouldn't change so there won't be ABI breakage and so such
feature can be safely implemented later.
There was also an idea of supporting other devices (PCI, SDIO, etc.) but
as this driver already contains some USB specific code (and will get
more) these should be probably separated drivers (triggers).

When choose randconfig for kernel build, it reports below warning:

which has unmet direct dependencies (USB_SUPPORT && USB && PM)"
In fact, USB_OTG is visible symbol and depends on PM, so the driver
needs to depend on it to reduce dependency problem.

UTMI+ Low Pin Interface (ULPI) is a commonly used PHY
interface for USB 2.0. The ULPI specification describes a
standard set of registers which the vendors can extend for
their specific needs. ULPI PHYs provide often functions
such as charger detection and ADP sensing and probing.
There are two major issues that the bus type is meant to
tackle:
Firstly, ULPI registers are accessed from the controller.
The bus provides convenient method for the controller
drivers to share that access with the actual PHY drivers.
Secondly, there are already platforms that assume ULPI PHYs
are runtime detected, such as many Intel Baytrail based
platforms. They do not provide any kind of hardware
description for the ULPI PHYs like separate ACPI device
object that could be used to enumerate a device from.

After commit b2b49ccbdd (PM: Kconfig: Set PM_RUNTIME if PM_SLEEP is
selected) PM_RUNTIME is always set if PM is set, so Kconfig options
depending on CONFIG_PM_RUNTIME may now be changed to depend on
CONFIG_PM.
Replace PM_RUNTIME with PM in Kconfig dependencies throughout the
tree.

This patch removes the depends on USB from all config symbols in
drivers/usb/host/Kconfig and replace that with an if USB / endif block
as suggested by Alan Stern. Some source ... Kconfig lines have been
shuffled around to permit a better regroupment of the Kconfig files
depending on "config USB" item. No functionnal change is introduced.

Commit 9214d1d8 set the USB persist flag as a default for all devices.
This might be desirable for some distributions, but it certainly has its
trade-offs... most importantly, it can significantly increase system
resume time, because the kernel blocks on resuming (and sometimes
resetting) USB devices before it unfreezes userspace.
This patch introduces a new config option CONFIG_USB_DEFAULT_PERSIST,
which allows distributions to make this decision on their own without
the need to carry a custom patch or revert the kernel's setting in
userspace.

This patch (as1675) removes the CONFIG_USB_SUSPEND option, essentially
replacing it everywhere with CONFIG_PM_RUNTIME (except for one place
in hub.c, where it is replaced with CONFIG_PM because the code needs
to be used in both runtime and system PM). The net result is code
shrinkage and simplification.
There's very little point in keeping CONFIG_USB_SUSPEND because almost
everybody enables it. The few that don't will find that the usbcore
module has gotten somewhat bigger and they will have to take active
measures if they want to prevent hubs from being runtime suspended.

If no default value is specified, then 'n' is used so the default value
used here is not needed. Furthermore, we should never change default
values depending on EXPERT mode. EXPERT mode should only make options
visible, not change them.

The meaning of CONFIG_EMBEDDED has long since been obsoleted; the option
is used to configure any non-standard kernel with a much larger scope than
only small devices.
This patch renames the option to CONFIG_EXPERT in init/Kconfig and fixes
references to the option throughout the kernel. A new CONFIG_EMBEDDED
option is added that automatically selects CONFIG_EXPERT when enabled and
can be used in the future to isolate options that should only be
considered for embedded systems (RISC architectures, SLOB, etc).
Calling the option "EXPERT" more accurately represents its intention: only
expert users who understand the impact of the configuration changes they
are making should enable it.

With patch as1329 (USB: convert to the runtime PM framework),
we make USB_SUSPEND depend on PM_RUNTIME instead of CONFIG_PM.
Also, CONFIG_USB_OTG selects CONFIG_USB_SUSPEND.
If PM_RUNTIME is not enabled, and we try to enable USB_OTG,
we will end up with CONFIG_USB_SUSPEND selected. This is
due to a known bug with the select statement.
This makes the build break on various OMAP configs (which
have CONFIG_USB_OTG set by default, but do not yet have
CONFIG_PM_RUNTIME enabled).
Avoid this by changing the logic for CONFIG_USB_OTG from
"select USB_SUSPEND" to "depends on USB_SUSPEND"

This patch (as1329) converts the USB stack over to the PM core's
runtime PM framework. This involves numerous changes throughout
usbcore, especially to hub.c and driver.c. Perhaps the most notable
change is that CONFIG_USB_SUSPEND now depends on CONFIG_PM_RUNTIME
instead of CONFIG_PM.
Several fields in the usb_device and usb_interface structures are no
longer needed. Some code which used to depend on CONFIG_USB_PM now
depends on CONFIG_USB_SUSPEND (requiring some rearrangement of header
files).
The only visible change in behavior should be that following a system
sleep (resume from RAM or resume from hibernation), autosuspended USB
devices will be resumed just like everything else. They won't remain
suspended. But if they aren't in use then they will naturally
autosuspend again in a few seconds.

This reverts commit cc71329b3b, so that
Red Hat machines can boot properly. It seems that the Red Hat initrd
code tries to watch the /proc/bus/usb/devices file to monitor usb
devices showing up. While this task is prone to lots of races and does
not show the true state of the system, they seem to like it.
So for now, don't move this option under the EMBEDDED config option.

Modern systems do not use usbfs; the entries within it are files,
not device nodes, and do not support ACLs which are the default way to
provide access to USB devices to untrusted users.
It is replaced by device-nodes maintained by udev in /dev/bus/usb,
libusb uses this device nodes.
Mark the option as deprecated, and hide entirely for non-embedded builds
(which may not be using udev but require raw USB device access).

This provides better support for USB "Embedded Host" functionality, which
is a subset of the USB OTG options:
* External hub support can be disabled;
* USB peripherals not whitelisted in "otg_whitelist.h" will be rejected
during enumeration.
These options can allow some savings in software and support.

it permanently. It also prevents the power/persist attribute from
being created for hub devices; there's no point in having it since
USB-PERSIST is always turned on for hubs.

This patch (as920) adds an extra level of protection to the
USB-Persist facility. Now it will apply by default only to hubs; for
all other devices the user must enable it explicitly by setting the
power/persist device attribute.
The disconnect_all_children() routine in hub.c has been removed and
its code placed inline. This is the way it was originally as part of
hub_pre_reset(); the revised usage in hub_reset_resume() is
sufficiently different that the code can no longer be shared.
Likewise, mark_children_for_reset() is now inline as part of
hub_reset_resume(). The end result looks much cleaner than before.
The sysfs interface is updated to add the new attribute file, and
there are corresponding documentation updates.

This patch (as886) adds the controversial USB-persist facility,
allowing USB devices to persist across a power loss during system
suspend.
The facility is controlled by a new Kconfig option (with appropriate
warnings about the potential dangers); when the option is off the
behavior will remain the same as it is now. But when the option is
on, people will be able to use suspend-to-disk and keep their USB
filesystems intact -- something particularly valuable for small
machines where the root filesystem is on a USB device!

o The "real" usb-devices export now a device node which can
populate /dev/bus/usb.
o The usb_device class is optional now and can be disabled in the
kernel config. Major/minor of the "real" devices and class devices
are the same.
o The environment of the usb-device event contains DEVNUM and BUSNUM to
help udev and get rid of the ugly udev rule we need for the class
devices.
o The usb-devices and usb-interfaces share the same bus, so I used
the new "struct device_type" to let these devices identify
themselves. This also removes the current logic of using a magic
platform-pointer.
The name of the device_type is also added to the environment
which makes it easier to distinguish the different kinds of devices
on the same subsystem.

This patch (as841) removes from usbcore a couple of support routines
meant to help with bandwidth allocation. With the changes to uhci-hcd
in the previous patch, these routines are no longer used anywhere.
Also removed is the CONFIG_USB_BANDWIDTH option; it no longer does
anything and is no longer needed since the HCDs now handle bandwidth
issues correctly.

Disable the USB_MULTITHREAD_PROBE option because it causes crashes on
people's machines and they never remember to actually read the config
help files.

This patch associates hub suspend and resume logic (including for root hubs)
with CONFIG_PM -- instead of CONFIG_USB_SUSPEND as before -- thereby unifying
two troublesome versions of suspend logic into just one. It'll be easier to
keep things right from now on.
- Now usbcore _always_ calls hcd->hub_suspend as needed, instead of
only when USB_SUSPEND is enabled:
* Those root hub methods are now called from hub suspend/resume;
no more skipping between layers during device suspend/resume;
* It now handles cases allowed by sysfs or autosuspended root hubs,
by forcing the hub interface to resume too.
- All devices, including virtual root hubs, now get the same treatment
on their resume paths ... including re-activating all their interfaces.
Plus it gets rid of those stub copies of usb_{suspend,resume}_device(), and
updates the Kconfig to match the new definition of USB_SUSPEND: it provides
(a) selective suspend, downstream from hubs; and (b) remote wakeup, upstream
from any device configuration which supports it.
This calls for minor followup patches for most HCDs (and their PCI glue).

Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history,
even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git
archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about
3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early
git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good
infrastructure for it.
