Teach bpf_object__open how to guess program type and expected attach
type from section names, similar to what bpf_prog_load() does. This
seems like a really useful features and an oversight to not have this
done during bpf_object_open(). To preserver backwards compatible
behavior of bpf_prog_load(), its attr->prog_type is treated as an
override of bpf_object__open() decisions, if attr->prog_type is not
UNSPECIFIED.
There is a slight difference in behavior for bpf_prog_load().
Previously, if bpf_prog_load() was loading BPF object with more than one
program, first program's guessed program type and expected attach type
would determine corresponding attributes of all the subsequent program
types, even if their sections names suggest otherwise. That seems like
a rather dubious behavior and with this change it will behave more
sanely: each program's type is determined individually, unless they are
forced to uniformity through attr->prog_type.

With commit "libbpf: stop enforcing kern_version,..." we removed the
kernel version section parsing in favor of querying for the kernel
using uname() and populating the version using the result of the
query. After this any version sections were simply ignored.
Unfortunately, the world of kernels is not so friendly. I've found some
customized kernels where uname() does not match the in kernel version.
To fix this so programs can load in this environment this patch adds
back parsing the section and if it exists uses the user specified
kernel version to override the uname() result. However, keep most the
kernel uname() discovery bits so users are not required to insert the
version except in these odd cases.

Define test runner generation meta-rule that codifies dependencies
between test runner, its tests, and its dependent BPF programs. Use that
for defining test_progs and test_maps test-runners. Also additionally define
2 flavors of test_progs:
- alu32, which builds BPF programs with 32-bit registers codegen;
- bpf_gcc, which build BPF programs using GCC, if it supports BPF target.
Overall, this is accomplished through $(eval)'ing a set of generic
rules, which defines Makefile targets dynamically at runtime. See
comments explaining the need for 2 $(evals), though.
For each test runner we have (test_maps and test_progs, currently), and,
optionally, their flavors, the logic of build process is modeled as
follows (using test_progs as an example):
- all BPF objects are in progs/:
- BPF object's .o file is built into output directory from
corresponding progs/.c file;
- all BPF objects in progs/*.c depend on all progs/*.h headers;
- all BPF objects depend on bpf_*.h helpers from libbpf (but not
libbpf archive). There is an extra rule to trigger bpf_helper_defs.h
(re-)build, if it's not present/outdated);
- build recipe for BPF object can be re-defined per test runner/flavor;
- test files are built from prog_tests/*.c:
- all such test file objects are built on individual file basis;
- currently, every single test file depends on all BPF object files;
this might be improved in follow up patches to do 1-to-1 dependency,
but allowing to customize this per each individual test;
- each test runner definition can specify a list of extra .c and .h
files to be built along test files and test runner binary; all such
headers are becoming automatic dependency of each test .c file;
- due to test files sometimes embedding (using .incbin assembly
directive) contents of some BPF objects at compilation time, which are
expected to be in CWD of compiler, compilation for test file object does
cd into test runner's output directory; to support this mode all the
include paths are turned into absolute paths using $(abspath) make
function;
- prog_tests/test.h is automatically (re-)generated with an entry for
each .c file in prog_tests/;
- final test runner binary is linked together from test object files and
extra object files, linking together libbpf's archive as well;
- it's possible to specify extra "resource" files/targets, which will be
copied into test runner output directory, if it differes from
Makefile-wide $(OUTPUT). This is used to ensure btf_dump test cases and
urandom_read binary is put into a test runner's CWD for tests to find
them in runtime.
For flavored test runners, their output directory is a subdirectory of
common Makefile-wide $(OUTPUT) directory with flavor name used as
subdirectory name.
BPF objects targets might be reused between different test runners, so
extra checks are employed to not double-define them. Similarly, we have
redefinition guards for output directories and test headers.
test_verifier follows slightly different patterns and is simple enough
to not justify generalizing TEST_RUNNER_DEFINE/TEST_RUNNER_DEFINE_RULES
further to accomodate these differences. Instead, rules for
test_verifier are minimized and simplified, while preserving correctness
of dependencies.

Currently it's impossible to do `make test_progs` and have only
test_progs be built, because all the binary targets are defined in terms
of $(OUTPUT)/<binary>, and $(OUTPUT) is absolute path to current

We are building a bunch of "flavors" of test_progs, e.g., w/ alu32 flag
for Clang when building BPF object. test_progs setup is relying on
having all the BPF object files and extra resources to be available in
current working directory, though. But we actually build all these files
into a separate sub-directory. Next set of patches establishes
convention of naming "flavored" test_progs (and test runner binaries in
general) as test_progs-flavor (e.g., test_progs-alu32), for each such
extra flavor. This patch teaches test_progs binary to automatically
detect its own extra flavor based on its argv[0], and if present, to

Introduce new helper that reuses existing skb perf_event output
implementation, but can be called from raw_tracepoint programs
that receive 'struct sk_buff *' as tracepoint argument or
can walk other kernel data structures to skb pointer.
In order to do that teach verifier to resolve true C types
of bpf helpers into in-kernel BTF ids.
The type of kernel pointer passed by raw tracepoint into bpf
program will be tracked by the verifier all the way until
it's passed into helper function.
For example:
kfree_skb() kernel function calls trace_kfree_skb(skb, loc);
bpf programs receives that skb pointer and may eventually
pass it into bpf_skb_output() bpf helper which in-kernel is
implemented via bpf_skb_event_output() kernel function.
Its first argument in the kernel is 'struct sk_buff *'.

It's a responsiblity of bpf program author to annotate the program
with SEC("tp_btf/name") where "name" is a valid raw tracepoint.
The libbpf will try to find "name" in vmlinux BTF and error out
in case vmlinux BTF is not available or "name" is not found.
If "name" is indeed a valid raw tracepoint then in-kernel BTF
will have "btf_trace_##name" typedef that points to function
prototype of that raw tracepoint. BTF description captures
exact argument the kernel C code is passing into raw tracepoint.
The kernel verifier will check the types while loading bpf program.
libbpf keeps BTF type id in expected_attach_type, but since
kernel ignores this attribute for tracing programs copy it
into attach_btf_id attribute before loading.
Later the kernel will use prog->attach_btf_id to select raw tracepoint

captured field in a destination BTF, allowing conditional logic to

BTF offset reloc was generalized in recent Clang into field relocation,
capturing extra u32 field, specifying what aspect of captured field
needs to be relocated. This changes .BTF.ext's record size for this
relocation from 12 bytes to 16 bytes. Given these format changes
happened in Clang before official released version, it's ok to not
support outdated 12-byte record size w/o breaking ABI.

In case of C/LDFLAGS there is no way to pass them correctly to build
command, for instance when --sysroot is used or external libraries
are used, like -lelf, wich can be absent in toolchain. This can be

No need to use C++ for test_libbpf target when libbpf is on C and it
can be tested with C, after this change the CXXFLAGS in makefiles can

Existing BPF_CORE_READ() macro generates slightly suboptimal code. If
there are intermediate pointers to be read, initial source pointer is
going to be assigned into a temporary variable and then temporary
variable is going to be uniformly used as a "source" pointer for all
intermediate pointer reads. Schematically (ignoring all the type casts),
BPF_CORE_READ(s, a, b, c) is expanded into:
({
const void *__t = src;
bpf_probe_read(&__t, sizeof(*__t), &__t->a);
bpf_probe_read(&__t, sizeof(*__t), &__t->b);
typeof(s->a->b->c) __r;
bpf_probe_read(&__r, sizeof(*__r), &__t->c);
})
This initial `__t = src` makes calls more uniform, but causes slightly
less optimal register usage sometimes when compiled with Clang. This can
cascase into, e.g., more register spills.
This patch fixes this issue by generating more optimal sequence:
({
const void *__t;
bpf_probe_read(&__t, sizeof(*__t), &src->a); /* <-- src here */
bpf_probe_read(&__t, sizeof(*__t), &__t->b);
typeof(s->a->b->c) __r;
bpf_probe_read(&__r, sizeof(*__r), &__t->c);
})

Add tests checking that verifier does proper constant propagation for
read-only maps. If constant propagation didn't work, skipp_loop and
part_loop BPF programs would be rejected due to BPF verifier otherwise
not being able to prove they ever complete. With constant propagation,
though, they are succesfully validated as properly terminating loops.

This Kselftest update for Linux 5.4-rc3 consists fixes for existing
tests and the framework. Cristian Marussi's patches add ability to
skip targets (tests) and exclude tests that didn't build from run-list.
These patches improve the Kselftest results. Ability to skip targets
helps avoid running tests that aren't supported in certain environments.
As an example, bpf tests from mainline aren't supported on stable kernels
and have dependency on bleeding edge llvm. Being able to skip bpf on
systems that can't meet this llvm dependency will be helpful.
Kselftest can be built and installed from the main Makefile. This change
help simplify Kselftest use-cases which addresses request from users.
Kees Cook added per test timeout support to limit individual test run-time.

This error occurs because the '--build_dir' option value is not passed
to the 'run_kernel()' function. Consequently, the function assumes
the kernel image that built for the tests, which is under the

the 'FileNotFoundError'.
This commit fixes the problem by properly passing the '--build_dir'
option value to the 'run_kernel()'.

Add new set of bpf_object__open APIs using new approach to optional
parameters extensibility allowing simpler ABI compatibility approach.
This patch demonstrates an approach to implementing libbpf APIs that
makes it easy to extend existing APIs with extra optional parameters in
such a way, that ABI compatibility is preserved without having to do
symbol versioning and generating lots of boilerplate code to handle it.
To facilitate succinct code for working with options, add OPTS_VALID,
OPTS_HAS, and OPTS_GET macros that hide all the NULL, size, and zero
checks.
Additionally, newly added libbpf APIs are encouraged to follow similar
pattern of having all mandatory parameters as formal function parameters
and always have optional (NULL-able) xxx_opts struct, which should
always have real struct size as a first field and the rest would be
optional parameters added over time, which tune the behavior of existing
API, if specified by user.

Kernel version enforcement for kprobes/kretprobes was removed from
5.0 kernel in 6c4fc209fc ("bpf: remove useless version check for prog load").
Since then, BPF programs were specifying SEC("version") just to please
libbpf. We should stop enforcing this in libbpf, if even kernel doesn't
care. Furthermore, libbpf now will pre-populate current kernel version
of the host system, in case we are still running on old kernel.
This patch also removes __bpf_object__open_xattr from libbpf.h, as
nothing in libbpf is relying on having it in that header. That function
was never exported as LIBBPF_API and even name suggests its internal
version. So this should be safe to remove, as it doesn't break ABI.

Due to a quirky C syntax of declaring pointers to array or function
prototype, existing __type() macro doesn't work with map key/value types
that are array or function prototype. One has to create a typedef first
and use it to specify key/value type for a BPF map. By using typeof(),
pointer to type is now handled uniformly for all kinds of types. Convert
one of self-tests as a demonstration.

Prior to this change an application sending <= 1MSS worth of data and
enabling UDP GSO would fail if the system had SW GSO enabled, but the
same send would succeed if HW GSO offload is enabled. In addition to this
inconsistency the error in the SW GSO case does not get back to the
application if sending out of a real device so the user is unaware of this
failure.
With this change we only perform GSO if the # of segments is > 1 even
if the application has enabled segmentation. I've also updated the

Fix the following build error from "make TARGETS=kvm kselftest":
libkvm.a(assert.o): relocation R_X86_64_32 against `.rodata.str1.1' can not be used when making a PIE object; recompile with -fPIC
This error is seen when build is done from the main Makefile using
kselftest target. In this case KBUILD_CPPFLAGS and CC_OPTION_CFLAGS
are defined.
When build is invoked using:
"make -C tools/testing/selftests/kvm" KBUILD_CPPFLAGS and CC_OPTION_CFLAGS
aren't defined.
There is no need to pass in KBUILD_CPPFLAGS and CC_OPTION_CFLAGS for the
check to determine if --no-pie is necessary, which is the case when these
two aren't defined when "make -C tools/testing/selftests/kvm" runs.
Fix it by simplifying the no-pie-option logic. With this change, both
build variations work.

Commit a745f7af3c ("selftests/harness: Add 30 second timeout per
test") solves the problem of kselftest_harness.h-using binary tests
possibly hanging forever. However, scripts and other binaries can still
hang forever. This adds a global timeout to each test script run.
To make this configurable (e.g. as needed in the "rtc" test case),
include a new per-test-directory "settings" file (similar to "config")
that can contain kselftest-specific settings. The first recognized field
is "timeout".
Additionally, this splits the reporting for timeouts into a specific
"TIMEOUT" not-ok (and adds exit code reporting in the remaining case).

Symbol versioning does happens in commonly used libraries, e.g., elfutils

will be ignored, and the symbol will be an alias to the latest definition.
For example, glibc sched_setaffinity is versioned.
-bash-4.4$ readelf -s /usr/lib64/libc.so.6 | grep sched_setaffinity

For both elfutils and glibc, additional macros are used to control different handling
of symbol versioning w.r.t static and shared libraries.
For elfutils, the macro is SYMBOL_VERSIONING

For glibc, the macro is SHARED

We were just returning -1 in symbol__annotate() when symbol__annotate()
failed, propagate its error as it is used later to pass to
symbol__strerror_disassemble() to present a error message to the user,
that in some cases were getting:
"Invalid -1 error code"
Fix it to propagate the error.

The callers of symbol__annotate2() use symbol__strerror_disassemble() to
convert its failure returns into a human readable string, so
propagate error values from functions it calls, starting with
perf_env__arch() that when fails the right thing to do is to look at
'errno' to see why its possible call to uname() failed.

The Intel fixed counters use a special table to override the JSON
information.
During this override the period information from the JSON file got
dropped, which results in inst_retired.any and similar running with
frequency mode instead of a period.

When the LBR data and the instructions in a binary do not match the loop
printing instructions could get confused and print a long stream of
bogus <bad> instructions.
The problem was that if the instruction decoder cannot decode an
instruction it ilen wasn't initialized, so the loop going through the
basic block would continue with the previous value.
Harden the code to avoid such problems:
- Make sure ilen is always freshly initialized and is 0 for bad
instructions.
- Do not overrun the code buffer while printing instructions
- Print a warning message if the final jump is not on an instruction
boundary.

During perf inject --jit, JIT_CODE_MOVE records were injecting MMAP records
with an incorrect filename. Specifically it was missing the ".so" suffix.
Further the JIT_CODE_LOAD record were silently truncating the
jr->load.code_index field to 32 bits before generating the filename.
Make both records emit the same filename based on the full 64 bit
code_index field.

Whenever an mmap/mmap2 event occurs, the map tree must be updated to add a new
entry. If a new map overlaps a previous map, the overlapped section of the
previous map is effectively unmapped, but the non-overlapping sections are
still valid.
maps__fixup_overlappings() is responsible for creating any new map entries from
the previously overlapped map. It optionally creates a before and an after map.
When creating the after map the existing code failed to adjust the map.pgoff.
This meant the new after map would incorrectly calculate the file offset
for the ip. This results in incorrect symbol name resolution for any ip in the
after region.
Make maps__fixup_overlappings() correctly populate map.pgoff.
Add an assert that new mapping matches old mapping at the beginning of
the after map.

An assortment of fixes that were either missed by me, or didn't arrive quite in
time for the first v5.4 pull.
Most notable is a fix for an issue with tlbie (broadcast TLB invalidation) on
Power9, when using the Radix MMU. The tlbie can race with an mtpid (move to PID
register, essentially MMU context switch) on another thread of the core, which
can cause stores to continue to go to a page after it's unmapped.
A fix in our KVM code to add a missing barrier, the lack of which has been
observed to cause missed IPIs and subsequently stuck CPUs in the host.
A change to the way we initialise PCR (Processor Compatibility Register) to make
it forward compatible with future CPUs.
On some older PowerVM systems our H_BLOCK_REMOVE support could oops, fix it to
detect such systems and fallback to the old invalidation method.
A fix for an oops seen on some machines when using KASAN on 32-bit.
A handful of other minor fixes, and two new selftests.

Pull integrity updates from Mimi Zohar:
"The major feature in this time is IMA support for measuring and
appraising appended file signatures. In addition are a couple of bug
fixes and code cleanup to use struct_size().
In addition to the PE/COFF and IMA xattr signatures, the kexec kernel
image may be signed with an appended signature, using the same
scripts/sign-file tool that is used to sign kernel modules.
Similarly, the initramfs may contain an appended signature.
This contained a lot of refactoring of the existing appended signature
verification code, so that IMA could retain the existing framework of
calculating the file hash once, storing it in the IMA measurement list
and extending the TPM, verifying the file's integrity based on a file
hash or signature (eg. xattrs), and adding an audit record containing
the file hash, all based on policy. (The IMA support for appended
signatures patch set was posted and reviewed 11 times.)
The support for appended signature paves the way for adding other
signature verification methods, such as fs-verity, based on a single
system-wide policy. The file hash used for verifying the signature and
the signature, itself, can be included in the IMA measurement list"

When a port is created, its VLAN filters are not cleared by the
firmware. This causes tagged packets to be later dropped by the ingress
STP filters, which default to DISCARD state.
The above did not matter much until commit b5ce611fd9 ("mlxsw:
spectrum: Add devlink-trap support") where we exposed the drop reason to
users.
Without this patch, the drop reason users will see is not consistent. If
a port is enslaved to a VLAN-aware bridge and a packet with an invalid
VLAN tries to ingress the bridge, it will be dropped due to ingress STP
filter. If the VLAN is later enabled and then disabled, the packet will
be dropped by the ingress VLAN filter despite the above being a
seemingly NOP operation.
Fix this by clearing all the VLAN filters during port initialization.
Adjust the test accordingly.

With this change if a perf_date parameter is provided to asciidoc then
it will override the default date written to the man page metadata.
Without this change, or if the perf_date isn't specified, then the
current date is written to the metadata.
Having this parameter allows the metadata to be constant if builds
happen on different dates.
The name of the parameter is intended to be consistent with the existing

BTF-to-C converter previously skipped anonymous enums in an assumption
that those are embedded in struct's field definitions. This is not
always the case and a lot of kernel constants are defined as part of
anonymous enums. This change fixes the logic by eagerly marking all
types as either referenced by any other type or not. This is enough to
distinguish two classes of anonymous enums and emit previously omitted
enum definitions.

Commit 7d9e5f4221 removed references from certain dsts, but accounting
for this never translated down into the fib6 suppression code. This bug
was triggered by WireGuard users who use wg-quick(8), which uses the
"suppress-prefix" directive to ip-rule(8) for routing all of their
internet traffic without routing loops. The test case added here
causes the reference underflow by causing packets to evaluate a suppress
rule.

Change the definition of the RBCOMPUTE function. The propagate callback
repeatedly calls RBCOMPUTE as it moves from leaf to root. it wants to
stop recomputing once the augmented subtree information doesn't change.
This was previously checked using the == operator, but that only works
when the augmented subtree information is a scalar field. This commit
modifies the RBCOMPUTE function so that it now sets the augmented subtree
information instead of returning it, and returns a boolean value
indicating if the propagate callback should stop.
The motivation for this change is that I want to introduce augmented
rbtree uses where the augmented data for the subtree is a struct instead
of a scalar.

Add RB_DECLARE_CALLBACKS_MAX, which generates augmented rbtree callbacks
for the case where the augmented value is a scalar whose definition
follows a max(f(node)) pattern. This actually covers all present uses of
RB_DECLARE_CALLBACKS, and saves some (source) code duplication in the
various RBCOMPUTE function definitions.

Patch series "make RB_DECLARE_CALLBACKS more generic", v3.
These changes are intended to make the RB_DECLARE_CALLBACKS macro more
generic (allowing the aubmented subtree information to be a struct instead
of a scalar).
I have verified the compiled lib/interval_tree.o and mm/mmap.o files to
check that they didn't change. This held as expected for interval_tree.o;
mmap.o did have some changes which could be reverted by marking
__vma_link_rb as noinline. I did not add such a change to the patchset; I
felt it was reasonable enough to leave the inlining decision up to the
compiler.
This patch (of 3):
Add a short comment summarizing the arguments to RB_DECLARE_CALLBACKS.
The arguments are also now capitalized. This copies the style of the
INTERVAL_TREE_DEFINE macro.
No functional changes in this commit, only comments and capitalization.

As was already noted in rbtree.h, the logic to cache rb_first (or
rb_last) can easily be implemented externally to the core rbtree api.
This commit takes the changes applied to the include/linux/ and lib/
rbtree files in 9f973cb380 ("lib/rbtree: avoid generating code twice
for the cached versions"), and applies these to the
tools/include/linux/ and tools/lib/ files as well to keep them
synchronized.

Some recent changes in latest Clang started causing the following
warning when unrolling strobemeta test case main loop:
progs/strobemeta.h:416:2: warning: loop not unrolled: the optimizer was
unable to perform the requested transformation; the transformation might
be disabled or specified as part of an unsupported transformation
ordering [-Wpass-failed=transform-warning]
This patch simplifies loop's exit condition to depend only on constant
max iteration number (STROBE_MAX_MAP_ENTRIES), while moving early
termination logic inside the loop body. The changes are equivalent from
program logic standpoint, but fixes the warning. It also appears to
improve generated BPF code, as it fixes previously failing non-unrolled
strobemeta test cases.

I'm not fully sure if this is the correct fix, but without this I get
crashes on more complex perf stat metric usages. The problem is that
part of the state gets freed when a weak group fails, but then is later
still used. Just don't free the ids, we're going to reuse them anyways
on the weak group retry.
For example:
% perf stat -M IpB,IpCall,IpTB,IPC,Retiring_SMT,Frontend_Bound_SMT,Kernel_Utilization,CPU_Utilization --metric-only -a -I 1000 sleep 2
crashes and gives in valgrind:

The perf_sample struct definition and the event_attr_init() are in
util/event.h, but some places were getting it thru an otherwise needless
util/mmap.h header, fix it by including util/event.h directly.

Ditch it, noone is using it, one more stdio.h include in a hot header.
Fix the fallout in parse-events.y, where we end up using a FILE pointer,
I think due to YYDEBUG being set and in some places, like Amazon Linux 1
we don't get stdio.h included by luck, like in most other places, add a
explicit stdio.h include directive.

Explicitly check kvm_rebooting in kvm_spurious_fault() prior to invoking
BUG(), as opposed to assuming the caller has already done so. Letting
kvm_spurious_fault() be called "directly" will allow VMX to better
optimize its low level assembly flows.
As a happy side effect, kvm_spurious_fault() no longer needs to be
marked as a dead end since it doesn't unconditionally BUG().

After commit e8bb4755eea2("KVM: selftests: Split ucall.c into architecture
specific files") selftests which use ucall on x86 started segfaulting and
apparently it's gcc to blame: it "optimizes" ucall() function throwing away
va_start/va_end part because it thinks the structure is not being used.
Previously, it couldn't do that because the there was also MMIO version and
the decision which particular implementation to use was done at runtime.
With older gccs it's possible to solve the problem by adding 'volatile'
to 'struct ucall' but at least with gcc-8.3 this trick doesn't work.
'memory' clobber seems to do the job.

The sys/types.h header looks more sensible, from its name we can gather
it should be there because of some needed typedef, and it is much
smaller than unistd.h, so use it and fix up the fallout in places where

That was done just to have users of writen() and readn(), that before
had their prototypes in util/util.h to get it without having to add an

Add the perf_mmap struct to libperf.
The definition is added into:
include/internal/mmap.h
which is not to be included by users, but shared within perf and
libperf.
Committer notes:
Remove unnecessary includes from tools/perf/lib/include/internal/mmap.h,
those will be readded as they become necessary, later in the series.

As this isn't used at all in mmap.h but in evlist.h, so to cut down the
header dependency tree, move it to where it is used.
Also add mmap.h to the places using it but previously getting it
indirectly via evlist.h.
Add missing pthread.h to evlist.h, as it has a pthread_t struct member
and was getting the header via mmap.h.
Noticed while processing a Jiri's libperf batch touching mmap.h, where
almost everything gets rebuilt because evlist.h is so popular, so cut
down't this rebuild the world party.

All traceevent plugins code is moved to tools/lib/traceevent/plugins
subdirectory. It makes traceevent implementation in trace-cmd and in
kernel tree consistent. There is no changes in the way libtraceevent and
plugins are compiled and installed.
Committer notes:
Applied fixup provided by Steven, fixing the tools/perf/Makefile.perf
target for the plugin dynamic list file. Problem noticed when cross
building to aarch64 from a Ubuntu 19.04 container.

The tep_get_event() function is an official libtracevent API, described
in the library man pages. However, it cannot be used by the library users because
it is not declared in the event-parse.h file, where all libtracevent APIs are.
The function declaration is added in event-parse.h file.

The tep_ref_get() was renamed to tep_get_ref(), to be more consistent
with the other tep_ref_* APIs. However, in the man pages the API is
still with the old name. The documentation is fixed to reflect the
actual name of the API.
