tty->count is decremented only after ->close() had been called and
several tasks can hit it in parallel. As the result, using tty->count
to check if you are the last one is broken. We end up leaving line->tty
not reset to NULL and the next IRQ on that sucker will blow up trying to
dereference pointers from kfree'd struct tty.
Fix is obvious: we need to use a counter of our own.

Some time ago Jeff prepared 42daba3165 ("uml: stop saving process FP
state") for UML to stop saving the process FP state between task
switches. The assumption was that since with SKAS0 every guest process
runs inside a host process context the host OS will take care of keeping
the proper FP state.
Unfortunately this is not true for multi-threaded applications, where
all guest threads share a single host process context yet all may use
the FPU on their own. Although I haven't verified it I suspect things
to be even worse in SKAS3 mode where all guest processes run inside a
single host process.
The patch reintroduces the saving and restoring of the FP context
between task switches.

Until now UML had no x86_64 vDSO. So glibc always used the vsyscall page
for gettimeday() and friends. Calls to gettimeday() returned falsely the
host time and confused some programs.
This patch adds a vDSO which turns all __vdso_* calls into a system call
so that UML can trap them.
As glibc still uses the vsyscall page for static binaries this patch
improves the situation only for dynamic binaries.

Most arches define CONFIG_DEBUG_STACK_USAGE exactly the same way. Move it
to lib/Kconfig.debug so each arch doesn't have to define it. This
obviously makes the option generic, but that's fine because the config is
already used in generic code.
It's not obvious to me that sysrq-P actually does anything caution by
keeping the most inclusive wording.

os_dump_core() uses abort() to terminate UML in case of an fatal error.
glibc's abort() calls raise(SIGABRT) which makes use of tgkill().
tgkill() has no effect within UML's kernel threads because they are not
pthreads. As fallback abort() executes an invalid instruction to
terminate the process. Therefore UML gets killed by SIGSEGV and leaves a
ugly log entry in the host's kernel ring buffer.
To get rid of this we use our own abort routine.

Commit 1de1502c ("x86, um: now we can get rid of trivial uml headers")
removed accidentally bug.h which broke UML's call tracer and bug
handler.
Without asm-generic/bug.h UML uses BUG() from arch/x86/ which makes use
of ud2. UML cannot use ud2, it raises SIGILL in user mode. As UML has
a different stack for handling signals the call trace will be cut off.

For future rework of try_to_wake_up() we'd like to push part of that
function onto the CPU the task is actually going to run on.
In order to do so we need a generic callback from the existing scheduler IPI.
This patch introduces such a generic callback: scheduler_ipi() and
implements it as a NOP.
BenH notes: PowerPC might use this IPI on offline CPUs under rare conditions!

Percpu allocator honors alignment request upto PAGE_SIZE and both the
percpu addresses in the percpu address space and the translated kernel
addresses should be aligned accordingly. The calculation of the
former depends on the alignment of percpu output section in the kernel
image.
The linker script macros PERCPU_VADDR() and PERCPU() are used to
define this output section and the latter takes @align parameter.
Several architectures are using @align smaller than PAGE_SIZE breaking
percpu memory alignment.
This patch removes @align parameter from PERCPU(), renames it to
PERCPU_SECTION() and makes it always align to PAGE_SIZE. While at it,
add PCPU_SETUP_BUG_ON() checks such that alignment problems are
reliably detected and remove percpu alignment comment recently added
in workqueue.c as the condition would trigger BUG way before reaching
there.
For um, this patch raises the alignment of percpu area. As the area
is in .init, there shouldn't be any noticeable difference.
This problem was discovered by David Howells while debugging boot
failure on mn10300.

One of our users reported that when a user-level program SIGSEGVs under
UML kernel, the resulting core dump is not very usable.
I have reproduced that with the latest kernel:
make ARCH=um defconfig; make ARCH=um
Run the resulting kernel, then "inside" run this program:
#include <pthread.h>
void *fn(void *p)
{
abort();
}
int main()
{
pthread_t tid;
pthread_create(&tid, 0, fn, 0);
pthread_join(tid, 0);
return 0;
}
Analyze the coredump with GDB. Here is what you'll see:
sudo gdb -q -ex 'set solib-absolute-prefix ../root_fs' -ex 'file ../root_fs/var/tmp/mt-abort' -ex 'core ../root_fs/var/tmp/core.762'

All kthreads being created from a single helper task, they all use memory
from a single node for their kernel stack and task struct.
This patch suite creates kthread_create_on_cpu(), adding a 'cpu' parameter
to parameters already used by kthread_create().
This parameter serves in allocating memory for the new kthread on its
memory node if available.

The meaning of CONFIG_EMBEDDED has long since been obsoleted; the option
is used to configure any non-standard kernel with a much larger scope than
only small devices.
This patch renames the option to CONFIG_EXPERT in init/Kconfig and fixes
references to the option throughout the kernel. A new CONFIG_EMBEDDED
option is added that automatically selects CONFIG_EXPERT when enabled and
can be used in the future to isolate options that should only be
considered for embedded systems (RISC architectures, SLOB, etc).
Calling the option "EXPERT" more accurately represents its intention: only
expert users who understand the impact of the configuration changes they
are making should enable it.

I think that it's better to detect DMA misuse at build time rather than
calling BUG_ON. Architectures that can't do DMA need to define
CONFIG_NO_DMA.
Thanks to Sam Ravnborg for explaining how CONFIG_NO_DMA and CONFIG_HAS_DMA
work:
http://marc.info/?l=linux-kernel&m=128359913825550&w=2
HAS_DMA is defined like this:
config HAS_DMA
boolean
depends on !NO_DMA
default y
So to set HAS_DMA to true an arch should do:
1) Do not define NO_DMA
2) Define NO_DMA abd set it to 'n'
Must archs - including um - used principle 1).
In the um case we want to say that we do NOT have any DMA.
This can be done in two ways.
a) define NO_DMA and set it to 'y'
b) redefine HAS_DMA and set it to 'n'.
The patch you provided used principle b) where other archs use principle a).
So I suggest you should use principle a) for um too.

The linker script cleanup that I did in commit 5d150a97f9 ("um: Clean up
linker script using standard macros.") (2.6.32) accidentally introduced an
ALIGN(PAGE_SIZE) when converting to use INIT_TEXT_SECTION; Richard
Weinberger reported that this causes the kernel to segfault with
CONFIG_STATIC_LINK=y.
I'm not certain why this extra alignment is a problem, but it seems likely
it is because previously
__init_begin = _stext = _text = _sinittext
and with the extra ALIGN(PAGE_SIZE), _sinittext becomes different from the
rest. So there is likely a bug here where something is assuming that
_sinittext is the same as one of those other symbols. But reverting the
accidental change fixes the regression, so it seems worth committing that
now.

All file_operations should get a .llseek operation so we can make
nonseekable_open the default for future file operations without a
.llseek pointer.
The three cases that we can automatically detect are no_llseek, seq_lseek
and default_llseek. For cases where we can we can automatically prove that
the file offset is always ignored, we use noop_llseek, which maintains
the current behavior of not returning an error from a seek.
New drivers should normally not use noop_llseek but instead use no_llseek
and call nonseekable_open at open time. Existing drivers can be converted
to do the same when the maintainer knows for certain that no user code
relies on calling seek on the device file.
The generated code is often incorrectly indented and right now contains
comments that clarify for each added line why a specific variant was
chosen. In the version that gets submitted upstream, the comments will
be gone and I will manually fix the indentation, because there does not
seem to be a way to do that using coccinelle.
Some amount of new code is currently sitting in linux-next that should get
the same modifications, which I will do at the end of the merge window.
Many thanks to Julia Lawall for helping me learn to write a semantic
patch that does all this.

Commit f81f2f7c (ubd: drop unnecessary rq->sector manipulation)
dropped request->sector manipulation in preparation for global request
handling cleanup; unfortunately, it incorrectly assumed that the
updated sector wasn't being used.
ubd tries to issue as many requests as possible to io_thread. When
issuing fails due to memory pressure or other reasons, the device is
put on the restart list and issuing stops. On IO completion, devices
on the restart list are scanned and IO issuing is restarted.
ubd issues IOs sg-by-sg and issuing can be stopped in the middle of a
request, so each device on the restart queue needs to remember where
to restart in its current request. ubd needs to keep track of the
issue position itself because,
* blk_rq_pos(req) is now updated by the block layer to keep track of
_completion_ position.
* Multiple io_req's for the current request may be in flight, so it's
difficult to tell where blk_rq_pos(req) currently is.
Add ubd->rq_pos to keep track of the issue position and use it to
correctly restart io_req issue.

uml_net_set_mac() was broken and luckily it was never used, before.
What it was trying to do is spin_lock before memcopy the mac address.
Linus attempted to fix it in assumption that someone decided the
lock was needed. But since it was never ever used at all, and was
just dead code, I think we can assume that it is not needed, after
all.
On the other hand patch [f25c80a4] was trying to use eth_mac_addr()
in eth_configure(), *which was the real fallout*. Because of state
checks done inside eth_mac_addr() the address was never set. I have
not reintroduced the memcpy wrapper, but I've put a comment for future
cats.
The code now is back to exactly as it was before [f25c80a4]. With
the cleanup applied. If the spin_lock is indeed needed then a contender
should supply a test case that fails, then fix it with the proper
locking, as a separate unrelated patch.

Make do_execve() take a const filename pointer so that kernel_execve() compiles
correctly on ARM:
arch/arm/kernel/sys_arm.c:88: warning: passing argument 1 of 'do_execve' discards qualifiers from pointer target type
This also requires the argv and envp arguments to be consted twice, once for
the pointer array and once for the strings the array points to. This is
because do_execve() passes a pointer to the filename (now const) to
copy_strings_kernel(). A simpler alternative would be to cast the filename
pointer in do_execve() when it's passed to copy_strings_kernel().
do_execve() may not change any of the strings it is passed as part of the argv
or envp lists as they are some of them in .rodata, so marking these strings as
const should be fine.
Further kernel_execve() and sys_execve() need to be changed to match.
This has been test built on x86_64, frv, arm and mips.

Architectures implement dma_is_consistent() in different ways (some
misinterpret the definition of API in DMA-API.txt). So it hasn't been so
useful for drivers. We have only one user of the API in tree. Unlikely
out-of-tree drivers use the API.
Even if we fix dma_is_consistent() in some architectures, it doesn't look
useful at all. It was invented long ago for some old systems that can't
allocate coherent memory at all. It's better to export only APIs that are
definitely necessary for drivers.
Let's remove this API.

The open and release block_device_operations are currently
called with the BKL held. In order to change that, we must
first make sure that all drivers that currently rely
on this have no regressions.
This blindly pushes the BKL into all .open and .release
operations for all block drivers to prepare for the
next step. The drivers can subsequently replace the BKL
with their own locks or remove it completely when it can
be shown that it is not needed.
The functions blkdev_get and blkdev_put are the only
remaining users of the big kernel lock in the block
layer, besides a few uses in the ioctl code, none
of which need to serialize with blkdev_{get,put}.
Most of these two functions is also under the protection
of bdev->bd_mutex, including the actual calls to
->open and ->release, and the common code does not
access any global data structures that need the BKL.

After tightening up the types passed to set_64bit(), the cast to
(phys_t *) triggers a warning apparently because phys_t is defined as
"unsigned long" when building on 64 bits; however, u64 is defined as
"unsigned long long". This is, however, a explicit cast inside a
size-specific call, so just make the cast explicitly (u64 *).

This moves the lock_kernel() call from soundcore_open
to the individual OSS device drivers, where we can deal
with it one driver at a time if needed, or just kill
off the drivers.
All core components in ALSA already provide
adequate locking in their open()-functions
and do not require the big kernel lock, so
there is no need to add the BKL there.
