Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo 2caa48a240 perf header: Stop using die() calls when processing tracing data
The callers of this function (perf_event__process_tracing_data) already
handles a negative value return as error, so just use pr_err() to log
the problem and return -1 instead of panic'ing.

Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo 876650e6c3 perf machine: Introduce struct machines
That consolidates the grouping of host + guests, isolating a bit more of
functionality now centered on 'perf_session' that can be used
independently in tools that don't need a 'perf_session' instance, but
needs to have all the thread/map/symbol machinery.

Xiao Guangrong bcf6edcd6f perf kvm: Events analysis tool
Add 'perf kvm stat' support to analyze kvm vmexit/mmio/ioport smartly

Usage:
- kvm stat
run a command and gather performance counter statistics, it is the alias of
  perf stat

- trace kvm events:
perf kvm stat record, or, if other tracepoints are interesting as well, we
can append the events like this:
perf kvm stat record -e timer:* -a

If many guests are running, we can track the specified guest by using -p or
--pid, -a is used to track events generated by all guests.

- show the result:
  perf kvm stat report

The output example is following:
13005
13059

total 2 guests are running on the host

Then, track the guest whose pid is 13059:
^C[ perf record: Woken up 1 times to write data ]
[ perf record: Captured and wrote 0.253 MB perf.data.guest (~11065 samples) ]

Irina Tirdea 1d037ca164 perf tools: Use __maybe_used for unused variables
perf defines both __used and __unused variables to use for marking
unused variables. The variable __used is defined to
__attribute__((__unused__)), which contradicts the kernel definition to
__attribute__((__used__)) for new gcc versions. On Android, __used is
also defined in system headers and this leads to warnings like: warning:
'__used__' attribute ignored

__unused is not defined in the kernel and is not a standard definition.
If __unused is included everywhere instead of __used, this leads to
conflicts with glibc headers, since glibc has a variables with this name
in its headers.

The best approach is to use __maybe_unused, the definition used in the
kernel for __attribute__((unused)). In this way there is only one
definition in perf sources (instead of 2 definitions that point to the
same thing: __used and __unused) and it works on both Linux and Android.
This patch simply replaces all instances of __used and __unused with
__maybe_unused.

Jiri Olsa 7dbf4dcfe2 perf tools: Back [vdso] DSO with real data
Storing data for VDSO shared object, because we need it for the post
unwind processing.

The VDSO shared object is same for all process on a running system, so
it makes no difference when we store it inside the tracer - perf.

When [vdso] map memory is hit, we retrieve [vdso] DSO image and store it
into temporary file.

During the build-id processing phase, the [vdso] DSO image is stored in
build-id db, and build-id reference is made inside perf.data. The
build-id vdso file object is called '[vdso]'. We don't use temporary
file name which gets removed when record is finished.

During report phase the vdso build-id object is treated as any other
build-id DSO object.

Adding following API for vdso object:

  bool is_vdso_map(const char *filename)
    - returns true if the filename matches vdso map name

  struct dso *vdso__dso_findnew(struct list_head *head)
    - find/create proper vdso DSO object

  vdso__exit(void)
    - removes temporary VDSO image if there's any

This change makes backtrace dwarf post unwind possible from [vdso] maps.

Following output is current report of [vdso] sample dwarf backtrace:

  # Overhead Command Shared Object Symbol

Robert Richter 50a9667c93 perf tools: Add pmu mappings to header information
With dynamic pmu allocation there are also dynamically assigned pmu ids.
These ids are used in event->attr.type to describe the pmu to be used
for that event. The information is available in sysfs, e.g:

 /sys/bus/event_source/devices/breakpoint/type: 5
 /sys/bus/event_source/devices/cpu/type: 4
 /sys/bus/event_source/devices/ibs_fetch/type: 6
 /sys/bus/event_source/devices/ibs_op/type: 7
 /sys/bus/event_source/devices/software/type: 1
 /sys/bus/event_source/devices/tracepoint/type: 2

These mappings are needed to know which samples belong to which pmu. If
a pmu is added dynamically like for ibs_fetch or ibs_op the type value
may vary.

Now, when decoding samples from perf.data this information in sysfs
might be no longer available or may have changed. We need to store it in
perf.data. Using the header for this. Now the header information created
with perf report contains an additional section looking like this:

 # pmu mappings: ibs_op = 7, ibs_fetch = 6, cpu = 4, breakpoint = 5, tracepoint = 2, software = 1

Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo fcf65bf149 perf evsel: Cache associated event_format
We already lookup the associated event_format when reading the perf.data
header, so that we can cache the tracepoint name in evsel->name, so do
it a little further and save the event_format itself, so that we can
avoid relookups in tools that need to access it.

Change the tools to take the most obvious advantage, when they were
using pevent_find_event directly. More work is needed for further
removing the need of a pointer to pevent, such as when asking for event
field values ("common_pid" and the other common fields and per
event_format fields).

This is something that was planned but only got actually done when
Andrey Wagin needed to do this lookup at perf_tool->sample() time, when
we don't have access to pevent (session->pevent) to use with
pevent_find_event().

Right now this isn't a problem as we're deferring resolving the

David Ahern 56e6f602aa perf tool: Save cmdline from user in file header vs what is passed to record
A number of builtin commands process some user args and then pass the rest to
cmd_record. cmd_record then saves argc/argv that it receives into the header of
the perf data file. But this loses the arguments handled by the first command
-- ie., the real command line from the user. This patch saves the command line
as typed by the user rather than what was passed to cmd_record.

As an example consider the command:
$ perf kvm --guest --host --guestmount=/tmp/guest-mount record
    -fo /tmp/perf.data -ag -- sleep 10

Currently the command saved to the header is:
    cmdline : /tmp/p3.5/perf record -o perf.data.kvm -fo /tmp/perf.data -ag -- sleep 1

(ignore the duplicated -o -- the first would be yet another bug with perf-kvm).

With this patch the command line saved to the header is:
cmdline : /tmp/p3.5/perf kvm --guest --host --guestmount=/tmp/guest-mount
    record -fo /tmp/perf.data -ag -- sleep 1

v2: simplified to saving the command in parse_options per Stephane's suggestion

Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo da3789628f perf tools: Stop using a global trace events description list
The pevent thing is per perf.data file, so I made it stop being static
and become a perf_session member, so tools processing perf.data files
use perf_session and _there_ we read the trace events description into
session->pevent and then change everywhere to stop using that single
global pevent variable and use the per session one.

Note that it _doesn't_ fall backs to trace__event_id, as we're not
interested at all in what is present in the
/sys/kernel/debug/tracing/events in the workstation doing the analysis,
just in what is in the perf.data file.

This patch also introduces perf_session__set_tracepoints_handlers that
is the perf perf.data/session way to associate handlers to tracepoint
events by resolving their IDs using the events descriptions stored in a
perf.data file. Make 'perf sched' use it.

Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo cb9dd49e11 perf tools: Fix synthesizing tracepoint names from the perf.data headers
We need to use the per event info snapshoted at record time to
synthesize the events name, so do it just after reading the perf.data
headers, when we already processed the /sys events data, otherwise we'll
end up using the local /sys that only by sheer luck will have the same
tracepoint ID -> real event association.

Example:

  # uname -a
  Linux felicio.ghostprotocols.net 3.4.0-rc5+ #1 SMP Sat May 19 15:27:11 BRT 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
  # perf record -e sched:sched_switch usleep 1
[ perf record: Woken up 1 times to write data ]
  [ perf record: Captured and wrote 0.015 MB perf.data (~648 samples) ]
  # cat /t/events/sched/sched_switch/id
  279
  # perf evlist -v
  sched:sched_switch: sample_freq=1, type: 2, config: 279, size: 80, sample_type: 1159, read_format: 7, disabled: 1, inherit: 1, mmap: 1, comm: 1, enable_on_exec: 1, sample_id_all: 1, exclude_guest: 1
  #

So on the above machine the sched:sched_switch has tracepoint id 279, but on
the machine were we'll analyse it it has a different id:

  $ cat /t/events/sched/sched_switch/id
  56
  $ perf evlist -i /tmp/perf.data
  kmem:mm_balancedirty_writeout
  $ cat /t/events/kmem/mm_balancedirty_writeout/id
  279

With this fix:

  $ perf evlist -i /tmp/perf.data
  sched:sched_switch

Stephane Eranian 114382a0ae perf tools: Make perf able to read files from older ABIs
This patches provides a way to handle legacy perf.data
files. Legacy files are those using the older PERFFILE
signature.

For those, it is still necessary to detect endianness but
without comparing their header->attr_size with the
tool's own version as it may be different. Instead, we use
a reference table for all known sizes from the legacy era.

We try all the combinations for sizes and endianness. If we find
a match, we proceed, otherwise we return: "incompatible file
format".

This is also done for the pipe-mode file format.

Stephane Eranian 69996df486 perf tools: Enable reading of perf.data files from different ABI rev
This patch allows perf to process perf.data files generated
using an ABI that has a different perf_event_attr struct size,
i.e., a different ABI version.

The perf_event_attr can be extended, yet perf needs to cope with
older perf.data files. Similarly, perf must be able to cope with
a perf.data file which is using a newer version of the ABI than
what it knows about.

This patch adds read_attr(), a routine that reads a
perf_event_attr struct from a file incrementally based on its
advertised size. If the on-file struct is smaller than what perf
knows, then the extra fields are zeroed. If the on-file struct
is bigger, then perf only uses what it knows about, the rest is
skipped.

Stephane Eranian 73323f541f perf tools: fix endianness detection in perf.data
The current version of perf detects whether or not the perf.data file is
written in a different endianness using the attr_size field in the
header of the file. This field represents sizeof(struct perf_event_attr)
as known to perf record. If the sizes do not match, then perf tries the
byte-swapped version. If they match, then the tool assumes a different
endianness.

The issue with the approach is that it assumes the size of
perf_event_attr always has to match between perf record and perf report.
However, the kernel perf_event ABI is extensible. New fields can be
added to struct perf_event_attr. Consequently, it is not possible to use
attr_size to detect endianness.

This patch takes another approach by using the magic number written at
the beginning of the perf.data file to detect endianness. The magic
number is an eight-byte signature. It's primary purpose is to identify
(signature) a perf.data file. But it could also be used to encode the
endianness.

The patch introduces a new value for this signature. The key difference
is that the signature is written differently in the file depending on
the endianness. Thus, by comparing the signature from the file with the
tool's own signature it is possible to detect endianness. The new
signature is "PERFILE2".

Backward compatiblity with existing perf.data file is ensured.

Robert Richter e20960c027 perf tools: Unify handling of features when writing feature section
The features HEADER_TRACE_INFO and HEADER_BUILD_ID are handled
different when writing the feature section. All other features are
simply disabled on failure and writing the section goes on without
returning an error. There is no reason for these special cases. This
patch unifies handling of the features.

This should be ok since all features can be parsed independently.
Offset and size of a feature's block is stored in struct perf_file_
section right after the data block of perf.data (see perf_session__
write_header()). Thus, if a feature does not exist then other features
can be processed anyway.

Also moving special code for HEADER_BUILD_ID out to write_build_id().

Jiri Olsa 29208e573a perf tools: Fix tracing info recording
Fixing the way the tracing information is stored within record command.
The current implementation is causing issues for pipe output.

Following commands fail currently:
	perf script syscall-counts ls
	perf record -e syscalls:sys_exit_read ls | ./perf report -i -

The tracing information is part of the perf data file. It contains
several files from within the tracing debugfs and procs directories.

Beside some static header files, for each tracing event the format
file is added. The /proc/kallsyms file is also added.

The tracing data are stored with preceeding size. This is causing some
dificulties for pipe output, since there's no way to tell debugfs/proc
file size before reading it. So, for pipe output, all the debugfs files
were read twice. Once to get the overall size and once to store the
content itself. This can cause problem in case any of these file
changed, within the storage time.

To fix this behaviour and ensure the integrity of the tracing data, we:
    - read debugfs/proc file into the temp file
    - get temp file size and dump it to the pipe
    - dump the temp file contents to the pipe

David Ahern d327fa4359 perf tools: handle endianness of feature bitmap
Feature bitmap is declared as an array of unsigned longs -- not good
since its size can differ between the host that generated the data file
and the host analyzing the file.

We need to handle endianness, but we don't know the size of the unsigned
long where the file was generated. Take a best guess at determining it:
try 64-bit swap first (ie., file created on a 64-bit host), and check if
the hostname feature bit is set (this feature bit is forced on as of
fbe96f2). If the bit is not, undo the 64-bit swap and try a 32-bit
swap. If the hostname bit is still not set (e.g., older data file), punt
and fallback to the original behavior -- clearing all feature bits and
setting buildid.

Stephane Eranian fbe96f29ce perf tools: Make perf.data more self-descriptive (v8)
The goal of this patch is to include more information about the host
environment into the perf.data so it is more self-descriptive. Overtime,
profiles are captured on various machines and it becomes hard to track
what was recorded, on what machine and when.

This patch provides a way to solve this by extending the perf.data file
with basic information about the host machine. To add those extensions,
we leverage the feature bits capabilities of the perf.data format. The
change is backward compatible with existing perf.data files.

We define the following useful new extensions:
 - HEADER_HOSTNAME: the hostname
 - HEADER_OSRELEASE: the kernel release number
 - HEADER_ARCH: the hw architecture
 - HEADER_CPUDESC: generic CPU description
 - HEADER_NRCPUS: number of online/avail cpus
 - HEADER_CMDLINE: perf command line
 - HEADER_VERSION: perf version
 - HEADER_TOPOLOGY: cpu topology
 - HEADER_EVENT_DESC: full event description (attrs)
 - HEADER_CPUID: easy-to-parse low level CPU identication

The small granularity for the entries is to make it easier to extend
without breaking backward compatiblity. Many entries are provided as
ASCII strings.

Perf report/script have been modified to print the basic information as
easy-to-parse ASCII strings. Extended information about CPU and NUMA
topology may be requested with the -I option.

Thanks to David Ahern for reviewing and testing the many versions of
this patch.

Jiri Olsa f57b05ed53 perf report: Use properly build_id kernel binaries
If we bring the recorded perf data together with kernel binary from another
machine using:

	on server A:
	perf archive

	on server B:
	tar xjvf perf.data.tar.bz2 -C ~/.debug

the build_id kernel dso is not properly recognized during the "perf report"
command on server B.

The reason is, that build_id dsos are added during the session initialization,
while the kernel maps are created during the sample event processing.

The machine__create_kernel_maps functions ends up creating new dso object for
kernel, but it does not check if we already have one added by build_id
processing.

Also the build_id reading ABI quirk added in commit:

 - commit b25114817a
perf build-id: Add quirk to deal with perf.data file format breakage

populates the "struct build_id_event::pid" with 0, which
is later interpreted as DEFAULT_GUEST_KERNEL_ID.

This is not always correct, so it's better to guess the pid
value based on the "struct build_id_event::header::misc" value.

- Tested with data generated on x86 kernel version v2.6.34
and reported back on x86_64 current kernel.
- Not tested for guest kernel case.

Note the problem stays for PERF_RECORD_MMAP events recorded by perf that
does not use proper pid (HOST_KERNEL_ID/DEFAULT_GUEST_KERNEL_ID). They are
misinterpreted within the current perf code. Probably there's not much we
can do about that.

Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo ec80fde746 perf symbols: Handle /proc/sys/kernel/kptr_restrict
Perf uses /proc/modules to figure out where kernel modules are loaded.

With the advent of kptr_restrict, non root users get zeroes for all module
start addresses.

So check if kptr_restrict is non zero and don't generate the syntethic
PERF_RECORD_MMAP events for them.

Warn the user about it in perf record and in perf report.

In perf report the reference relocation symbol being zero means that
kptr_restrict was set, thus /proc/kallsyms has only zeroed addresses, so don't
use it to fixup symbol addresses when using a valid kallsyms (in the buildid
cache) or vmlinux (in the vmlinux path) build-id located automatically or
specified by the user.

Provide an explanation about it in 'perf report' if kernel samples were taken,
checking if a suitable vmlinux or kallsyms was found/specified.

Restricted /proc/kallsyms don't go to the buildid cache anymore.

Example:

 [acme@emilia ~]$ perf record -F 100000 sleep 1

WARNING: Kernel address maps (/proc/{kallsyms,modules}) are restricted, check
 /proc/sys/kernel/kptr_restrict.

Samples in kernel functions may not be resolved if a suitable vmlinux file is
not found in the buildid cache or in the vmlinux path.

Samples in kernel modules won't be resolved at all.

If some relocation was applied (e.g. kexec) symbols may be misresolved even
with a suitable vmlinux or kallsyms file.

[ perf record: Woken up 1 times to write data ]
 [ perf record: Captured and wrote 0.005 MB perf.data (~231 samples) ]

Lin Ming 7ee235efe5 perf symbols: Avoid resolving [kernel.kallsyms] to real path for buildid cache
kallsyms has a virtual file name [kernel.kallsyms]. Currently, it can't
be added to buildid cache successfully because the code
(build_id_cache__add_s) tries to resolve [kernel.kallsyms] to a real
absolute pathname and that fails.

Fixes it by not resolving it and just use the name [kernel.kallsyms].
So dir ~/.debug/[kernel.kallsyms] is created.

Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo e248de331a perf tools: Improve support for sessions with multiple events
By creating an perf_evlist out of the attributes in the perf.data file
header, so that we can use evlists and evsels when reading recorded
sessions in addition to when we record sessions.

More work is needed to allow tools to allow the user to select which
events are wanted when browsing sessions, be it just one or a subset of
them, aggregated or showed at the same time but with different
indications on the UI to allow seeing workloads thru different views at
the same time.

But the overall goal/trend is to more uniformly use evsels and evlists.

Kyle McMartin fb7d0b3cef perf tool: Fix gcc 4.6.0 issues
GCC 4.6.0 in Fedora rawhide turned up some compile errors in tools/perf
due to the -Werror=unused-but-set-variable flag.

I've gone through and annotated some of the assignments that had side
effects (ie: return value from a function) with the __used annotation,
and in some cases, just removed unused code.

In a few cases, we were assigning something useful, but not using it in
later parts of the function.

Killing two more perf wide global variables: nr_counters and evsel_list
as a list_head.

There are more operations that will need more fields in perf_evlist,
like the pollfd for polling all the fds in a list of evsel instances.

Use option->value to pass the evsel_list to parse_{events,filters}.

Franck Bui-Huu 68a7a771ad perf buildid-cache: Fix symbolic link handling
This was broken since link(2) doesn't dereference symbolic

This had the bad effect to create dangling symlinks in the case that

First column is the cpu and the second the timestamp.

That way we can investigate problems in the event stream.

Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo 640c03ce83 perf session: Parse sample earlier
At perf_session__process_event, so that we reduce the number of lines in eache
tool sample processing routine that now receives a sample_data pointer already
parsed.

This will also be useful in the next patch, where we'll allow sample the
identity fields in MMAP, FORK, EXIT, etc, when it will be possible to see (cpu,
timestamp) just after before every event.

Also validate callchains in perf_session__process_event, i.e. as early as
possible, and keep a counter of the number of events discarded due to invalid
callchains, warning the user about it if it happens.

There is an assumption that was kept that all events have the same sample_type,
that will be dealt with in the future, when this preexisting limitation will be
removed.
