Josh Poimboeuf 8bda6a63a0 perf test: Add Build file to dependencies for llvm-src-*.c
Because the Build file writes source code to the generated llvm-src-*.c
files, it should be listed as one of the dependencies, so that any
future changes to the code being echoed won't require a 'make clean'.

Namhyung Kim 71d6de64fe perf test: Fix hist testcases when kptr_restrict is on
Currently if kptr_restrict is enabled, all hist tests failed with
segfaults.  This is because machine__create_kernel_maps() in
setup_fake_machine() failed in that situation, and it called
machine__delete() on the error path.  But outer callers again called
machines__exit() causing double free for the host machine.

Jiri Olsa c0651c41e4 perf test: Prevent using bpf-output event in round trip name test
The bpf-output is added under software events, but is not parse-able
within parse_events, which is what round trip test is expecting.

Jiri Olsa 7320b1b3d9 perf test: Fix cpus and thread maps reference in error path
In error path to try user space event, both cpus and threads map now
owned by evlist and freed by perf_evlist__set_maps call.  Getting
reference to keep them alive.

Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo 721a1f53df perf tests: Pass the subtest index to each test routine
Some tests have sub-tests we want to run, so allow passing this.

Wang tried to avoid having to touch all tests, but then, having the
test.func in an anonymous union makes the build fail on older compilers,
like the one in RHEL6, where:

  test a = {
	.func = foo,
  };

fails.

To fix it leave the func pointer in the main structure and pass the subtest
index to all tests, end result function is the same, but we have just one
function pointer, not two, with and without the subtest index as an argument.

Two bugs in 'perf test BPF' are found when testing BPF prologue without
vmlinux:

Test BPF should fail in this case.

Wang Nan bbb7d4925a perf test: Test the BPF prologue adding infrastructure
This patch introduces a new BPF script to test the BPF prologue adding
routines. The new script probes at null_lseek, which is the function pointer
used when we try to lseek on '/dev/null'.

The null_lseek function is chosen because it is used by function pointers, so
we don't need to consider inlining and LTO.

By extracting file->f_mode, bpf-script-test-prologue.c should know whether the
file is writable or readonly. According to llseek_loop() and
bpf-script-test-prologue.c, one fourth of total lseeks should be collected.

Wang Nan ba1fae431e perf test: Add 'perf test BPF'
This patch adds BPF testcase for testing BPF event filtering.

By utilizing the result of 'perf test LLVM', this patch compiles the
eBPF sample program then test its ability. The BPF script in 'perf test
LLVM' lets only 50% samples generated by epoll_pwait() to be captured.
This patch runs that system call for 111 times, so the result should
contain 56 samples.

Wang Nan b31de018a6 perf test: Enhance the LLVM test: update basic BPF test program
This patch replaces the original toy BPF program with the previously
introduced bpf-script-example.c. Dynamically embeddeding it into
'llvm-src-base.c'.

The newly introduced BPF program attaches a BPF program to
'sys_epoll_pwait()'. perf itself never use that syscall, so further test
can verify their result with it. The program would generate 1 sample in
every 2 calls of epoll_pwait() system call.

Since the resulting BPF object is useful per se for further tests,
test_llvm__fetch_bpf_obj() is introduced for creating BPF objects from
source. The LLVM test was rewritten to use it.

Wang Nan 6371ca3b54 bpf tools: Improve libbpf error reporting
In this patch, a series of libbpf specific error numbers and
libbpf_strerror() are introduced to help reporting errors.

Functions are updated to pass correct the error number through the
CHECK_ERR() macro.

All users of bpf_object__open{_buffer}() and bpf_program__title() in
perf are modified accordingly. In addition, due to the error codes
changing, bpf__strerror_load() is also modified to use them.

bpf__strerror_head() is also changed accordingly so it can parse libbpf
errors. bpf_loader_strerror() is introduced for that purpose, and will
be improved by the following patch.

load_program() is improved not to dump log buffer if it is empty. log
buffer is also used to deduce whether the error was caused by an invalid
program or other problem.

Wang Nan 597bdeb4ab perf test: Keep test result clean if '-v' not set
According to [1], 'perf test' should avoid output too much information
if '-v' is not set, only 'Ok', 'FAIL' or 'Skip' need to be printed.

This patch removes several messages sent directly to stderr to make
the output clean.

Wang Nan d509db0473 perf tools: Compile scriptlets to BPF objects when passing '.c' to --event
This patch provides infrastructure for passing source files to --event
directly using:

 # perf record --event bpf-file.c command

This patch does following works:

 1) Allow passing '.c' file to '--event'. parse_events_load_bpf() is
    expanded to allow caller tell it whether the passed file is source
    file or object.

 2) llvm__compile_bpf() is called to compile the '.c' file, the result
    is saved into memory. Use bpf_object__open_buffer() to load the
    in-memory object.

Introduces a bpf-script-example.c so we can manually test it:

 # perf record --clang-opt "-DLINUX_VERSION_CODE=0x40200" --event ./bpf-script-example.c sleep 1

Note that '--clang-opt' must put before '--event'.

Futher patches will merge it into a testcase so can be tested automatically.

Wang Nan ed63f34c02 perf tools: Make perf depend on libbpf
By adding libbpf into perf's Makefile, this patch enables perf to build
libbpf if libelf is found and neither NO_LIBELF nor NO_LIBBPF is set.

The newly introduced code is similar to how libapi and libtraceevent
are wired into Makefile.perf.

MANIFEST is also updated for 'make perf-*-src-pkg'.

Append make_no_libbpf to tools/perf/tests/make.

The 'bpf' feature check is appended into default FEATURE_TESTS and
FEATURE_DISPLAY, so perf will check the API version of bpf in
/path/to/kernel/include/uapi/linux/bpf.h. Which should not fail except
when we are trying to port this code to an old kernel.

Error messages are also updated to notify users about the lack of BPF
support in 'perf record' if libelf is missing or the BPF API check
failed.

tools/lib/bpf is added to TAG_FOLDERS to allow us to navigate libbpf
files when working on perf using tools/perf/tags.

However it'd be better to see them only -v option is given.  To do that,

Namhyung Kim 8719138318 perf test: Silence tracepoint event failures
Currently, when 'perf test' is run by a normal user, it'll fail to
access tracepoint events.  The output becomes somewhat messy because it
tries to be nice with long error messages and hints.

IMHO this is not needed for 'perf test' by default and AFAIK 'perf test'
uses pr_debug() rather than pr_err() for such messages so that one can
use -v option to see further details on failed testcases if needed.

Before:

Matt Fleming d8b167f9d8 perf tests: Move x86 tests into arch directory
Move out the x86-specific tests into tools/perf/arch/x86/tests and
define an 'arch_tests' array, which is the list of tests that only apply
to the build architecture.

We can also now begin to get rid of some of the #ifdef code that is
present in the generic perf tests.

Matt Fleming 31b6753f95 perf tests: Add arch tests
Tests that only make sense for some architectures currently live in
the same place as the generic tests. Move out the x86-specific tests
into tools/perf/arch/x86/tests and define an 'arch_tests' array, which
is the list of tests that only apply to the build architecture.

The main idea is to encourage developers to add arch tests to build
out perf's test coverage, without dumping everything in
tools/perf/tests.

Jiri Olsa 8dd2a1317e perf evsel: Propagate error info from tp_format
Propagate error info from tp_format via ERR_PTR to get it all the way
down to the parse-event.c tracepoint adding routines. Following
functions now return pointer with encoded error:

  - tp_format
  - trace_event__tp_format
  - perf_evsel__newtp_idx
  - perf_evsel__newtp

This affects several other places in perf, that cannot use pointer check
anymore, but must utilize the err.h interface, when getting error
information from above functions list.

Matt Fleming e8210cefb7 perf tests: Introduce iterator function for tests
In preparation for introducing more arrays of tests, e.g. "arch tests"
(architecture-specific tests), abstract the code to iterate over the
list of tests into a helper function.

This way, code that uses a 'struct test' doesn't need to worry about how
the tests are grouped together and changes to the list of tests doesn't
require changes to the code using it.

Adrian Hunter 3fe78d6af9 x86/insn: perf tools: Add new SHA instructions
Intel SHA Extensions are explained in the Intel Architecture
Instruction Set Extensions Programing Reference (Oct 2014).
There are 7 new instructions.  Add them to the op code map
and the perf tools new instructions test. e.g.

Adrian Hunter 98e4619f2b perf tools: Add a test for decoding of new x86 instructions
Add a new test titled:

	Test x86 instruction decoder - new instructions

The purpose of this test is to check the instruction decoder after new
instructions have been added.  Initially, MPX instructions are tested
which are already supported, but the definitions in x86-opcode-map.txt
will be tweaked in a subsequent patch, after which this test can be run
to verify those changes.

The data for the test comes from assembly language instructions in
insn-x86-dat-src.c which is converted into bytes by the scripts
gen-insn-x86-dat.sh and gen-insn-x86-dat.awk, and included into the test
program insn-x86.c as insn-x86-dat-32.c and insn-x86-dat-64.c.

The conversion is not done as part of the perf tools build because the
test data must be under (git) change control in order for the test to be
repeatably-correct.  Also it may require a recent version of binutils.

Wang Nan acf860ae7c bpf tools: New API to get name from a BPF object
Before this patch there's no way to connect a loaded bpf object
to its source file. However, during applying perf's '--filter' to BPF
object, without this connection makes things harder, because perf loads
all programs together, but '--filter' setting is for each object.

The API of bpf_object__open_buffer() is changed to allow passing a name.
Fortunately, at this time there's only one user of it (perf test LLVM),
so we change it together.

Wang Nan 9bc898c701 perf tests: Add LLVM test for eBPF on-the-fly compiling
Previous patches introduce llvm__compile_bpf() to compile source file to
eBPF object. This patch adds testcase to test it. It also tests libbpf
by opening generated object after applying next patch which introduces
HAVE_LIBBPF_SUPPORT option.

Since llvm__compile_bpf() prints long messages which users who don't
explicitly test llvm doesn't care, this patch set verbose to -1 to
suppress all debug, warning and error message, and hint user use 'perf
test -v' to see the full output.

For the same reason, if clang is not found in PATH and there's no [llvm]
section in .perfconfig, skip this test.

Jiri Olsa ee4c75887d perf tools: Force period term to overload global settings
Currently the command line option settings beats the per event period
settings:

With no global settings, we get per-event configuration:

  $ perf record -e 'cpu/instructions,period=20000/' sleep 1
  $ perf evlist -v
  ... { sample_period, sample_freq }: 20000 ...

With 'c' option period setup, we get 'c' option value:
  $ perf record -e 'cpu/instructions,period=20000/' -c 1000 sleep 1
  $ perf evlist -v
  ... { sample_period, sample_freq }: 1000 ...

This patch makes the per-event settings overload the global 'c' option
setup:

  $ perf record -e 'cpu/instructions,period=20000/' -c 1000 sleep 1
  $ perf evlist -v
  ... { sample_period, sample_freq }: 20000 ...

I think the making the per-event settings to overload any other config
makes more sense than current state. However it breaks the current
'period' term handling, which might cause some noise.. so let's see ;-).

Also fixing parse event tests with the new behaviour.

Jiri Olsa 502819c5f3 perf tests: Add testing for Makefile.perf
Currently we test only builds through top level Makefile, but seems like
there's a bunch of users using Makefile.perf directly.

Changing the make suite to be run for Makefile.perf as well.  It takes
now considerable amount of time, but hopefully we catch more issues.

Also fixing the output indentation for make_kernelsrc and
make_kernelsrc_tools tests.

there is not a definitive "don't use this DSO anymore" event, i.e. we may
get many 'struct map' holding references to the '/usr/lib64/libc-2.20.so'
DSO but then at some point some DSO may have no references but we still
don't want to straight away release its resources, because "soon" we may
get a new 'struct map' that needs it and we want to reuse its symtab or
other resources.

So we need some way to garbage collect it when crossing some memory
usage threshold, which is left for anoter patch, for now it is
sufficient to release it when calling dsos__exit(), i.e. when deleting
the whole list as part of deleting the 'struct machine' containing it,
which will leave only referenced objects being used.

This is because __kmod_path__parse treats '[' leading names as kernel
name instead of names of kernel module.

If perf.data contains build information and the buildid of such modules
can be found, the dso->kernel of it will be set to DSO_TYPE_KERNEL by
__event_process_build_id(), not kernel module.

It will then be passed to dso__load() -> dso__load_kernel_sym() ->
dso__load_kcore() if --kallsyms is provided.

The refered patch adds NULL pointer checker to avoid segfault. However,
such kernel modules are still processed incorrectly.

This patch fixes __kmod_path__parse, makes it treat names like
'[test_module]' as kernel modules.

kmod-path.c is also update to reflect the above changes.

mmap-basic fails on arm64.

This is because arm64 doesn't come with getpgrp() syscall. The syscall
is a BSD compatibility wrapper, Archs that don't define
__ARCH_WANT_SYS_GETPGRP do not have this. Remove it, since getpgid is
already used in the testcase.

Multiple perf tests fail on arm64 due to missing open syscall:

 2: detect open syscall event                              : FAILED!

open(2) is a legacy syscall, replaced with openat(2) since 2.6.16.  Thus
new architectures in kernel, such as arm64, don't implement these legacy
syscalls.

The patch replaces all sys_enter_open events with sys_enter_openat,
renames the related tests and test output to avoid confusion.

When introducing reference counting for struct thread instances I forgot
to remove the synthetic threads from the machine's rbtree so that it
then the threads would have just one reference and thus the
thread__put() replacing the thread__delete() really turns into a
thread__delete() (thread->refcnt == 1 at thread__put() time) and thus
drop the thread->mg refcount, as expected by the this test.

Fix it by calling machine__remove_thread() (the counterpart of
machine__findnew_thread()) on all the synthetic threads after the
checks that involves the rbtree were done.

Before:

This is under investigation, the thread__delete() calls were replaced
with thread__put(), and those cause mismatches because now we need to be
more judicious with the thread lifetime management.

I.e. previously the thread__delete() would drop the map_group refcount,
but now since thread__put doesn't call thread__delete() necessarily.
because we have other refcount holders, the map_group refcount will not
be as we expected when this test was implemented.

Will be fixed soon...

argument, so we should convert the value to signed char if we have valid
negative exit codes. And the return value of test->func() contains

Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo b91fc39f4a perf machine: Protect the machine->threads with a rwlock
In addition to using refcounts for the struct thread lifetime
management, we need to protect access to machine->threads from
concurrent access.

That happens in 'perf top', where a thread processes events, inserting
and deleting entries from that rb_tree while another thread decays
hist_entries, that end up dropping references and ultimately deleting
threads from the rb_tree and releasing its resources when no further
hist_entry (or other data structures, like in 'perf sched') references
it.

So the rule is the same for refcounts + protected trees in the kernel,
get the tree lock, find object, bump the refcount, drop the tree lock,
return, use object, drop the refcount if no more use of it is needed,
keep it if storing it in some other data structure, drop when releasing
that data structure.

I.e. pair "t = machine__find(new)_thread()" with a "thread__put(t)", and
"perf_event__preprocess_sample(&al)" with "addr_location__put(&al)".

The addr_location__put() one is because as we return references to
several data structures, we may end up adding more reference counting
for the other data structures and then we'll drop it at
addr_location__put() time.

Jiri Olsa b39b839309 perf tools: Add parse_events_error interface
Adding support to return error information from parse_events function.
Following struct will be populated by parse_events function on return:

where 'idx' is the position in the string where the parsing failed,
'str' contains dynamically allocated error string describing the error
and 'help' is optional help string.

The change contains reporting function, which currently does not display
anything. The code changes to supply error data for specific event types
are coming in next patches. However this is what the expected output is:

  $ sudo perf record -e 'sched:krava' ls
  event syntax error: 'sched:krava'
                       \___ unknown tracepoint
  ...

Jiri Olsa 3c8a67f50a perf tools: Add kmod_path__parse function
Provides united way of parsing kernel module path
into several components.

The new kmod_path__parse function and few defines:

  int __kmod_path__parse(struct kmod_path *m, const char *path,
                         bool alloc_name, bool alloc_ext);

  #define kmod_path__parse(__m, __p)      __kmod_path__parse(__m, __p, false, false)
  #define kmod_path__parse_name(__m, __p) __kmod_path__parse(__m, __p, true , false)
  #define kmod_path__parse_ext(__m, __p)  __kmod_path__parse(__m, __p, false, true)

parse kernel module @path and updates @m argument like:

  @comp - true if @path contains supported compression suffix,
          false otherwise
  @kmod - true if @path contains '.ko' suffix in right position,
          false otherwise
  @name - if (@alloc_name && @kmod) is true, it contains strdup-ed base name
          of the kernel module without suffixes, otherwise strudup-ed
          base name of @path
  @ext  - if (@alloc_ext && @comp) is true, it contains strdup-ed string
          the compression suffix

It returns 0 if there's no strdup error, -ENOMEM otherwise.

Yunlong Song 1f9975f14c perf tools: Add the bash completion for listing subsubcommands of perf test
The bash completion does not support listing subsubcommands for 'perf
test <TAB>', so fix it.

Example:

Before this patch:

 $ perf test <TAB>
 $

As shown above, the subsubcommands of perf test does not come out.

After this patch:

 $ perf test <TAB>
 list

As shown above, the subsubcommands of perf test can come out now.

H.J. Lu 76aea7731e perf tools: Fix perf-read-vdsox32 not building and lib64 install dir
Commit:

  c6e5e9fbc3 ("perf tools: Fix building error in x86_64 when dwarf unwind is on")

removed the definition of IS_X86_64 but not all places using it, with
the consequence that perf-read-vdsox32 would not be built anymore, and
the default lib install directory was 'lib' instead of 'lib64'.

Also needs to go to v3.19.
