locking/atomic, arch/mn10300: Implement atomic_fetch_{add,sub,and,or,xor}()
Implement FETCH-OP atomic primitives, these are very similar to the existing OP-RETURN primitives we already have, except they return the value of the atomic variable _before_ modification. This is especially useful for irreversible operations -- such as bitops (because it becomes impossible to reconstruct the state prior to modification). locking/spinlock, arch: Update and fix spin_unlock_wait() implementations
This patch updates/fixes all spin_unlock_wait() implementations. The update is in semantics; where it previously was only a control dependency, we now upgrade to a full load-acquire to match the store-release from the spin_unlock() we waited on. This ensures that when spin_unlock_wait() returns, we're guaranteed to observe the full critical section we waited on. This fixes a number of spin_unlock_wait() users that (not unreasonably) rely on this. I also fixed a number of ticket lock versions to only wait on the current lock holder, instead of for a full unlock, as this is sufficient. Furthermore; again for ticket locks; I added an smp_rmb() in between the initial ticket load and the spin loop testing the current value because I could not convince myself the address dependency is sufficient, esp. if the loads are of different sizes. I'm more than happy to remove this smp_rmb() again if people are certain the address dependency does indeed work as expected. Note: PPC32 will be fixed independently Signed-off-by: Peter Zijlstra (Intel) <peterz@infradead.org> Cc: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Cc: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org> Cc: Paul E. char/genrtc: remove mn10300 support
The genrtc driver serves no purpose on mn10300 because it drives the same hardware as the original rtc.c driver, and the newer rtc-generic.c or rtc-cmos.c drivers on architectures that use the asm-generic/rtc.h header. I assume it was initially only added for completeness when the mn10300 port was done, but the older rtc.c driver was always used instead. We can also stop include asm-generic/rtc.h now, because we just call mc146818_set_time() directly. It would be nice to change the architecture to use the rtc-cmos driver next, and remove support for the old rtc driver as well. BPF programs can be used to determine the message boundaries. From Tom Herbert. 6) Add 802.1AE MACSEC support, from Sabrina Dubroca. 7) Avoid factorial complexity when taking down an inetdev interface with lots of configured addresses. We were doing things like traversing the entire address less for each address removed, and flushing the entire netfilter conntrack table for every address as well. 8) Add and use SKB bulk free infrastructure, from Jesper Brouer. 9) Allow offloading u32 classifiers to hardware, and implement for ixgbe, from John Fastabend. 10) Allow configuring IRQ coalescing parameters on a per-queue basis, from Kan Liang. 11) Extend ethtool so that larger link mode masks can be supported. From David Decotigny. 12) Introduce devlink, which can be used to configure port link types (ethernet vs Infiniband, etc.), port splitting, and switch device level attributes as a whole. From Jiri Pirko. 13) Hardware offload support for flower classifiers, from Amir Vadai. 14) Add "Local Checksum Offload". ipv4: Update parameters for csum_tcpudp_magic to their original types
This patch updates all instances of csum_tcpudp_magic and csum_tcpudp_nofold to reflect the types that are usually used as the source inputs. For example the protocol field is populated based on nexthdr which is actually an unsigned 8 bit value. The length is usually populated based on skb->len which is an unsigned integer. This addresses an issue in which the IPv6 function csum_ipv6_magic was generating a checksum using the full 32b of skb->len while csum_tcpudp_magic was only using the lower 16 bits. As a result we could run into issues when attempting to adjust the checksum as there was no protocol agnostic way to update it. With this change the value is still truncated as many architectures use "(len + proto) << 8", however this truncation only occurs for values greater than 16776960 in length and as such is unlikely to occur as we stop the inner headers at ~64K in size. I did have to make a few minor changes in the arm, mn10300, nios2, and score versions of the function in order to support these changes as they were either using things such as an OR to combine the protocol and length, or were using ntohs to convert the length which would have truncated the value. I also updated a few spots in terms of whitespace and type differences for the addresses. Most of this was just to make sure all of the definitions were in sync going forward. arch/hotplug: Call into idle with a proper state
Let the non boot cpus call into idle with the corresponding hotplug state, so the hotplug core can handle the further bringup. That's a first step to convert the boot side of the hotplugged cpus to do all the synchronization with the other side through the state machine. For now it'll only start the hotplug thread and kick the full bringup of the cpu. net: Facility to report route quality of connected sockets
This patch add the SO_CNX_ADVICE socket option (setsockopt only). The purpose is to allow an application to give feedback to the kernel about the quality of the network path for a connected socket. The value argument indicates the type of quality report. For this initial patch the only supported advice is a value of 1 which indicates "bad path, please reroute"-- the action taken by the kernel is to call dst_negative_advice which will attempt to choose a different ECMP route, reset the TX hash for flow label and UDP source port in encapsulation, etc. This facility should be useful for connected UDP sockets where only the application can provide any feedback about path quality. It could also be useful for TCP applications that have additional knowledge about the path outside of the normal TCP control loop. Merge branch 'strscpy' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/cmetcalf/linux-tile
Pull strscpy string copy function implementation from Chris Metcalf. Chris sent this during the merge window, but I waffled back and forth on the pull request, which is why it's going in only now. The new "strscpy()" function is definitely easier to use and more secure than either strncpy() or strlcpy(), both of which are horrible nasty interfaces that have serious and irredeemable problems. strncpy() has a useless return value, and doesn't NUL-terminate an overlong result. To make matters worse, it pads a short result with zeroes, which is a performance disaster if you have big buffers. strlcpy(), by contrast, is a mis-designed "fix" for strlcpy(), lacking the insane NUL padding, but having a differently broken return value which returns the original length of the source string. Which means that it will read characters past the count from the source buffer, and you have to trust the source to be properly terminated. It also makes error handling fragile, since the test for overflow is unnecessarily subtle. strscpy() avoids both these problems, guaranteeing the NUL termination (but not excessive padding) if the destination size wasn't zero, and making the overflow condition very obvious by returning -E2BIG. It also doesn't read past the size of the source, and can thus be used for untrusted source data too. So why did I waffle about this for so long? Every time we introduce a new-and-improved interface, people start doing these interminable series of trivial conversion patches. And every time that happens, somebody does some silly mistake, and the conversion patch to the improved interface actually makes things worse. Because the patch is mindnumbing and trivial, nobody has the attention span to look at it carefully, and it's usually done over large swatches of source code which means that not every conversion gets tested. So I'm pulling the strscpy() support because it *is* a better interface. But I will refuse to pull mindless conversion patches. Use this in places where it makes sense, but don't do trivial patches to fix things that aren't actually known to be broken. * 'strscpy' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/cmetcalf/linux-tile: tile: use global strscpy() rather than private copy string: provide strscpy() Make asm/word-at-a-time.h available on all architectures |

atomic, arch: Audit atomic_{read,set}()
This patch makes sure that atomic_{read,set}() are at least {READ,WRITE}_ONCE(). We already had the 'requirement' that atomic_read() should use ACCESS_ONCE(), and most archs had this, but a few were lacking. All are now converted to use READ_ONCE(). And, by a symmetry and general paranoia argument, upgrade atomic_set() to use WRITE_ONCE(). Pull locking and atomic updates from Ingo Molnar: "Main changes in this cycle are: - Extend atomic primitives with coherent logic op primitives (atomic_{or,and,xor}()) and deprecate the old partial APIs (atomic_{set,clear}_mask()) The old ops were incoherent with incompatible signatures across architectures and with incomplete support. Now every architecture supports the primitives consistently (by Peter Zijlstra) - Generic support for 'relaxed atomics': - _acquire/release/relaxed() flavours of xchg(), cmpxchg() and {add,sub}_return() - atomic_read_acquire() - atomic_set_release() This came out of porting qwrlock code to arm64 (by Will Deacon) - Clean up the fragile static_key APIs that were causing repeat bugs, by introducing a new one: DEFINE_STATIC_KEY_TRUE(name); DEFINE_STATIC_KEY_FALSE(name); which define a key of different types with an initial true/false value. Then allow: static_branch_likely() static_branch_unlikely() to take a key of either type and emit the right instruction for the case. To be able to know the 'type' of the static key we encode it in the jump entry (by Peter Zijlstra) - Static key self-tests (by Jason Baron) - qrwlock optimizations (by Waiman Long) - small futex enhancements (by Davidlohr Bueso) - ... and misc other changes" * 'locking-core-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip: (63 commits) jump_label/x86: Work around asm build bug on older/backported GCCs locking, ARM, atomics: Define our SMP atomics in terms of _relaxed() operations locking, include/llist: Use linux/atomic.h instead of asm/cmpxchg.h locking/qrwlock: Make use of _{acquire|release|relaxed}() atomics locking/qrwlock: Implement queue_write_unlock() using smp_store_release() locking/lockref: Remove homebrew cmpxchg64_relaxed() macro definition locking, asm-generic: Add _{relaxed|acquire|release}() variants for 'atomic_long_t' locking, asm-generic: Rework atomic-long.h to avoid bulk code duplication locking/atomics: Add _{acquire|release|relaxed}() variants of some atomic operations locking, compiler.h: Cast away attributes in the WRITE_ONCE() magic locking/static_keys: Make verify_keys() static jump label, locking/static_keys: Update docs locking/static_keys: Provide a selftest jump_label: Provide a self-test s390/uaccess, locking/static_keys: employ static_branch_likely() x86, tsc, locking/static_keys: Employ static_branch_likely() locking/static_keys: Add selftest locking/static_keys: Add a new static_key interface locking/static_keys: Rework update logic locking/static_keys: Add static_key_{en,dis}able() helpers ... |

mn10300/cevt-mn10300: Migrate to new 'set-state' interface
Migrate mn10300 driver to the new 'set-state' interface provided by clockevents core, the earlier 'set-mode' interface is marked obsolete now. This also enables us to implement callbacks for new states of clockevent devices, for example: ONESHOT_STOPPED. We weren't doing anything in the ->set_mode() callback. So, this patch doesn't provide any set-state callbacks. arch/*/io.h: Add ioremap_uc() to all architectures
This adds ioremap_uc() only for architectures that do not include asm-generic.h/io.h as that already provides a default definition for them for both cases where you have CONFIG_MMU and you do not, and because of this, the number of architectures this patch address is less than the architectures that the ioremap_wt() patch addressed, "arch/*/io.h: Add ioremap_wt() to all architectures"). In order to reduce the number of architectures we have to modify by adding new architecture IO APIs we'll have to review the architectures in this patch, see why they can't add asm-generic.h/io.h or issues that would be created by doing so and then spread a consistent inclusion of this header towards the end of their own header. For instance arch/metag includes the asm-generic/io.h *before* the ioremap*() definitions, this should be the other way around but only once we have guard wrappers for the non-MMU case also for asm-generic/io.h. PCI: Call pci_read_bridge_bases() from core instead of arch code
When we scan a PCI bus, we read PCI-PCI bridge window registers with pci_read_bridge_bases() so we can validate the resource hierarchy. Most architectures call pci_read_bridge_bases() from pcibios_fixup_bus(), but PCI-PCI bridges are not arch-specific, so this doesn't need to be in arch-specific code. Call pci_read_bridge_bases() directly from the PCI core instead of from arch code. For alpha and mips, we now call pci_read_bridge_bases() always; previously we only called it if PCI_PROBE_ONLY was set. Make asm/word-at-a-time.h available on all architectures
Added the x86 implementation of word-at-a-time to the generic version, which previously only supported big-endian. Omitted the x86-specific load_unaligned_zeropad(), which in any case is also not present for the existing BE-only implementation of a word-at-a-time, and is only used under CONFIG_DCACHE_WORD_ACCESS. Added as a "generic-y" to the Kbuilds of all architectures that didn't previously have it. Signed-off-by: Chris Metcalf <cmetcalf@ezchip.com> |

This series of commits converts non-modular code that is using the module_init() call to hook itself into the system to instead use device_initcall(). The conversion is a runtime no-op, since module_init actually becomes __initcall in the non-modular case, and that in turn gets mapped onto device_initcall. A couple files show a larger negative diffstat, representing ones that had a module_exit function that we remove here vs previously relying on the linker to dispose of it. We make this conversion now, so that we can relocate module_init from init.h into module.h in the future. mm: new mm hook framework
CRIU is recreating the process memory layout by remapping the checkpointee memory area on top of the current process (criu). This includes remapping the vDSO to the place it has at checkpoint time. However some architectures like powerpc are keeping a reference to the vDSO base address to build the signal return stack frame by calling the vDSO sigreturn service. So once the vDSO has been moved, this reference is no more valid and the signal frame built later are not usable. This patch serie is introducing a new mm hook framework, and a new arch_remap hook which is called when mremap is done and the mm lock still hold. The next patch is adding the vDSO remap and unmap tracking to the powerpc architecture. This patch (of 3): This patch introduces a new set of header file to manage mm hooks: - per architecture empty header file (arch/x/include/asm/mm-arch-hooks.h) - a generic header (include/linux/mm-arch-hooks.h) The architecture which need to overwrite a hook as to redefine it in its header file, while architecture which doesn't need have nothing to do. The default hooks are defined in the generic header and are used in the case the architecture is not defining it. In a next step, mm hooks defined in include/asm-generic/mm_hooks.h should be moved here. Merge branch 'x86-core-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip
Pull x86 core updates from Ingo Molnar: "There were so many changes in the x86/asm, x86/apic and x86/mm topics in this cycle that the topical separation of -tip broke down somewhat - so the result is a more traditional architecture pull request, collected into the 'x86/core' topic. The topics were still maintained separately as far as possible, so bisectability and conceptual separation should still be pretty good - but there were a handful of merge points to avoid excessive dependencies (and conflicts) that would have been poorly tested in the end. The next cycle will hopefully be much more quiet (or at least will have fewer dependencies). The main changes in this cycle were: * x86/apic changes, with related IRQ core changes: (Jiang Liu, Thomas Gleixner) - This is the second and most intrusive part of changes to the x86 interrupt handling - full conversion to hierarchical interrupt domains: [IOAPIC domain] ----- | [MSI domain] --------[Remapping domain] ----- [ Vector domain ] | (optional) | [HPET MSI domain] ----- | | [DMAR domain] ----------------------------- | [Legacy domain] ----------------------------- This now reflects the actual hardware and allowed us to distangle the domain specific code from the underlying parent domain, which can be optional in the case of interrupt remapping. It's a clear separation of functionality and removes quite some duct tape constructs which plugged the remap code between ioapic/msi/hpet and the vector management. - Intel IOMMU IRQ remapping enhancements, to allow direct interrupt injection into guests (Feng Wu) * x86/asm changes: - Tons of cleanups and small speedups, micro-optimizations. This is in preparation to move a good chunk of the low level entry code from assembly to C code (Denys Vlasenko, Andy Lutomirski, Brian Gerst) - Moved all system entry related code to a new home under arch/x86/entry/ (Ingo Molnar) - Removal of the fragile and ugly CFI dwarf debuginfo annotations. Conversion to C will reintroduce many of them - but meanwhile they are only getting in the way, and the upstream kernel does not rely on them (Ingo Molnar) - NOP handling refinements. (Borislav Petkov) * x86/mm changes: - Big PAT and MTRR rework: making the code more robust and preparing to phase out exposing direct MTRR interfaces to drivers - in favor of using PAT driven interfaces (Toshi Kani, Luis R Rodriguez, Borislav Petkov) - New ioremap_wt()/set_memory_wt() interfaces to support Write-Through cached memory mappings. This is especially important for good performance on NVDIMM hardware (Toshi Kani) * x86/ras changes: - Add support for deferred errors on AMD (Aravind Gopalakrishnan) This is an important RAS feature which adds hardware support for poisoned data. mn10300: don't use module_init in non-modular flash.c code
The flash.o is built for obj-y -- and hence this code is always present. It will never be modular, so using module_init as an alias for __initcall can be somewhat misleading. Fix this up now, so that we can relocate module_init from init.h into module.h in the future. If we don't do this, we'd have to add module.h to obviously non-modular code, and that would be a worse thing. Note that direct use of __initcall is discouraged, vs. one of the priority categorized subgroups. As __initcall gets mapped onto device_initcall, our use of device_initcall directly in this change means that the runtime impact is zero -- it will remain at level 6 in initcall ordering. arch/*/io.h: Add ioremap_wt() to all architectures
Add ioremap_wt() to all arch-specific asm/io.h headers which define ioremap_wc() locally. These headers do not include <asm-generic/iomap.h>. Some of them include <asm-generic/io.h>, but ioremap_wt() is defined for consistency since they define all ioremap_xxx locally. In all architectures without Write-Through support, ioremap_wt() is defined indentical to ioremap_nocache(). frv and m68k already have ioremap_writethrough(). On those we add ioremap_wt() indetical to ioremap_writethrough() and defines ARCH_HAS_IOREMAP_WT in both architectures. The ioremap_wt() interface is exported to drivers. mm/fault, arch: Use pagefault_disable() to check for disabled pagefaults in the handler
Introduce faulthandler_disabled() and use it to check for irq context and disabled pagefaults (via pagefault_disable()) in the pagefault handlers. Please note that we keep the in_atomic() checks in place - to detect whether in irq context (in which case preemption is always properly disabled). In contrast, preempt_disable() should never be used to disable pagefaults. With !CONFIG_PREEMPT_COUNT, preempt_disable() doesn't modify the preempt counter, and therefore the result of in_atomic() differs. We validate that condition by using might_fault() checks when calling might_sleep(). Therefore, add a comment to faulthandler_disabled(), describing why this is needed. faulthandler_disabled() and pagefault_disable() are defined in linux/uaccess.h, so let's properly add that include to all relevant files. PCI: Assign resources before drivers claim devices (pci_scan_root_bus())
Previously, pci_scan_root_bus() created a root PCI bus, enumerated the devices on it, and called pci_bus_add_devices(), which made the devices available for drivers to claim them. Most callers assigned resources to devices after pci_scan_root_bus() returns, which may be after drivers have claimed the devices. This is incorrect; the PCI core should not change device resources while a driver is managing the device. Remove pci_bus_add_devices() from pci_scan_root_bus() and do it after any resource assignment in the callers. Note that ARM's pci_common_init_dev() already called pci_bus_add_devices() after pci_scan_root_bus(), so we only need to remove the first call: pci_common_init_dev pcibios_init_hw pci_scan_root_bus pci_bus_add_devices # first call pci_bus_assign_resources pci_bus_add_devices # second call [bhelgaas: changelog, drop "root_bus" var in alpha common_init_pci(), return failure earlier in mn10300, add "return" in x86 pcibios_scan_root(), return early if xtensa platform_pcibios_fixup() fails] Signed-off-by: Yijing Wang <wangyijing@huawei.com> Signed-off-by: Bjorn Helgaas <bhelgaas@google.com> CC: Richard Henderson <rth@twiddle.net> CC: Ivan Kokshaysky <ink@jurassic.park.msu.ru> CC: Matt Turner <mattst88@gmail.com> CC: David Howells <dhowells@redhat.com> CC: Tony Luck <tony.luck@intel.com> CC: Michal Simek <monstr@monstr.eu> CC: Ralf Baechle <ralf@linux-mips.org> CC: Koichi Yasutake <yasutake.koichi@jp.panasonic.com> CC: Sebastian Ott <sebott@linux.vnet.ibm.com> CC: "David S. mm: add missing __PAGETABLE_{PUD,PMD}_FOLDED defines
Core mm expects __PAGETABLE_{PUD,PMD}_FOLDED to be defined if these page table levels folded. Usually, these defines are provided by <asm-generic/pgtable-nopmd.h> and <asm-generic/pgtable-nopud.h>. But some architectures fold page table levels in a custom way. They need to define these macros themself. This patch adds missing defines. all arches, signal: move restart_block to struct task_struct
If an attacker can cause a controlled kernel stack overflow, overwriting the restart block is a very juicy exploit target. This is because the restart_block is held in the same memory allocation as the kernel stack. Moving the restart block to struct task_struct prevents this exploit by making the restart_block harder to locate. Note that there are other fields in thread_info that are also easy targets, at least on some architectures. It's also a decent simplification, since the restart code is more or less identical on all architectures. Merge branch 'akpm' (patches from Andrew)
Merge misc updates from Andrew Morton: "Bite-sized chunks this time, to avoid the MTA ratelimiting woes. - fs/notify updates - ocfs2 - some of MM" That laconic "some MM" is mainly the removal of remap_file_pages(), which is a big simplification of the VM, and which gets rid of a *lot* of random cruft and special cases because we no longer support the non-linear mappings that it used. From a user interface perspective, nothing has changed, because the remap_file_pages() syscall still exists, it's just done by emulating the old behavior by creating a lot of individual small mappings instead of one non-linear one. The emulation is slower than the old "native" non-linear mappings, but nobody really uses or cares about remap_file_pages(), and simplifying the VM is a big advantage. * emailed patches from Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org>: (78 commits) memcg: zap memcg_slab_caches and memcg_slab_mutex memcg: zap memcg_name argument of memcg_create_kmem_cache memcg: zap __memcg_{charge,uncharge}_slab mm/page_alloc.c: place zone_id check before VM_BUG_ON_PAGE check mm: hugetlb: fix type of hugetlb_treat_as_movable variable mm, hugetlb: remove unnecessary lower bound on sysctl handlers"? mm: memory: merge shared-writable dirtying branches in do_wp_page() mm: memory: remove ->vm_file check on shared writable vmas xtensa: drop _PAGE_FILE and pte_file()-related helpers x86: drop _PAGE_FILE and pte_file()-related helpers unicore32: drop pte_file()-related helpers um: drop _PAGE_FILE and pte_file()-related helpers tile: drop pte_file()-related helpers sparc: drop pte_file()-related helpers sh: drop _PAGE_FILE and pte_file()-related helpers score: drop _PAGE_FILE and pte_file()-related helpers s390: drop pte_file()-related helpers parisc: drop _PAGE_FILE and pte_file()-related helpers openrisc: drop _PAGE_FILE and pte_file()-related helpers nios2: drop _PAGE_FILE and pte_file()-related helpers ... |

vm: add VM_FAULT_SIGSEGV handling support
The core VM already knows about VM_FAULT_SIGBUS, but cannot return a
"you should SIGSEGV" error, because the SIGSEGV case was generally
handled by the caller - usually the architecture fault handler.
That results in lots of duplication - all the architecture fault
handlers end up doing very similar "look up vma, check permissions, do
retries etc" - but it generally works. However, there are cases where
the VM actually wants to SIGSEGV, and applications _expect_ SIGSEGV.
In particular, when accessing the stack guard page, libsigsegv expects a
SIGSEGV. And it usually got one, because the stack growth is handled by
that duplicated architecture fault handler.
However, when the generic VM layer started propagating the error return
from the stack expansion in commit

mn10300/PCI: Clip bridge windows to fit in upstream windows
Every PCI-PCI bridge window should fit inside an upstream bridge window
because orphaned address space is unreachable from the primary side of the
upstream bridge. If we inherit invalid bridge windows that overlap an
upstream window from firmware, clip them to fit and update the bridge
accordingly.

net: sock: allow eBPF programs to be attached to sockets
introduce new setsockopt() command: setsockopt(sock, SOL_SOCKET, SO_ATTACH_BPF, &prog_fd, sizeof(prog_fd)) where prog_fd was received from syscall bpf(BPF_PROG_LOAD, attr, ...) and attr->prog_type == BPF_PROG_TYPE_SOCKET_FILTER setsockopt() calls bpf_prog_get() which increments refcnt of the program, so it doesn't get unloaded while socket is using the program. The same eBPF program can be attached to multiple sockets. User task exit automatically closes socket which calls sk_filter_uncharge() which decrements refcnt of eBPF program Signed-off-by: Alexei Starovoitov <ast@plumgrid.com> Signed-off-by: David S. net: introduce SO_INCOMING_CPU
Alternative to RPS/RFS is to use hardware support for multiple queues. Then split a set of million of sockets into worker threads, each one using epoll() to manage events on its own socket pool. Ideally, we want one thread per RX/TX queue/cpu, but we have no way to know after accept() or connect() on which queue/cpu a socket is managed. We normally use one cpu per RX queue (IRQ smp_affinity being properly set), so remembering on socket structure which cpu delivered last packet is enough to solve the problem. After accept(), connect(), or even file descriptor passing around processes, applications can use : int cpu; socklen_t len = sizeof(cpu); getsockopt(fd, SOL_SOCKET, SO_INCOMING_CPU, &cpu, &len); And use this information to put the socket into the right silo for optimal performance, as all networking stack should run on the appropriate cpu, without need to send IPI (RPS/RFS). PCI: Turn pcibios_penalize_isa_irq() into a weak function
pcibios_penalize_isa_irq() is only implemented by x86 now, and legacy ISA is not used by some architectures. Make pcibios_penalize_isa_irq() a __weak function to simplify the code. Pull irq code updates from Thomas Gleixner: "The irq department proudly presents: - Another tree wide sweep of irq infrastructure abuse. Both are needed to replace the homebrewn thread handling in the mmc/sdhci code. - New irq chip callbacks to allow proper support for GPIO based irqs. The GPIO based interrupts need to request/release GPIO resources from request/free_irq. - A few new ARM interrupt chips. arch: Clean up asm/barrier.h implementations using asm-generic/barrier.h
We're going to be adding a few new barrier primitives, and in order to avoid endless duplication make more agressive use of asm-generic/barrier.h. Change the asm-generic/barrier.h such that it allows partial barrier definitions and fills out the rest with defaults. There are a few architectures (m32r, m68k) that could probably do away with their barrier.h file entirely but are kept for now due to their unconventional nop() implementation. Merge git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/davem/net-next
Pull networking updates from David Miller: 1) The addition of nftables. No longer will we need protocol aware firewall filtering modules, it can all live in userspace. At the core of nftables is a, for lack of a better term, virtual machine that executes byte codes to inspect packet or metadata (arriving interface index, etc.) and make verdict decisions. Besides support for loading packet contents and comparing them, the interpreter supports lookups in various datastructures as fundamental operations. For example sets are supports, and therefore one could create a set of whitelist IP address entries which have ACCEPT verdicts attached to them, and use the appropriate byte codes to do such lookups. Since the interpreted code is composed in userspace, userspace can do things like optimize things before giving it to the kernel. Another major improvement is the capability of atomically updating portions of the ruleset. In the existing netfilter implementation, one has to update the entire rule set in order to make a change and this is very expensive. Userspace tools exist to create nftables rules using existing netfilter rule sets, but both kernel implementations will need to co-exist for quite some time as we transition from the old to the new stuff. Kudos to Patrick McHardy, Pablo Neira Ayuso, and others who have worked so hard on this. 2) Daniel Borkmann and Hannes Frederic Sowa made several improvements to our pseudo-random number generator, mostly used for things like UDP port randomization and netfitler, amongst other things. In particular the taus88 generater is updated to taus113, and test cases are added. 3) Support 64-bit rates in HTB and TBF schedulers, from Eric Dumazet and Yang Yingliang. 4) Add support for new 577xx tigon3 chips to tg3 driver, from Nithin Sujir. 5) Fix two fatal flaws in TCP dynamic right sizing, from Eric Dumazet, Neal Cardwell, and Yuchung Cheng. 6) Allow IP_TOS and IP_TTL to be specified in sendmsg() ancillary control message data, much like other socket option attributes. From Francesco Fusco. 7) Allow applications to specify a cap on the rate computed automatically by the kernel for pacing flows, via a new SO_MAX_PACING_RATE socket option. From Eric Dumazet. 8) Make the initial autotuned send buffer sizing in TCP more closely reflect actual needs, from Eric Dumazet. 9) Currently early socket demux only happens for TCP sockets, but we can do it for connected UDP sockets too. Implementation from Shawn Bohrer. 10) Refactor inet socket demux with the goal of improving hash demux performance for listening sockets. With the main goals being able to use RCU lookups on even request sockets, and eliminating the listening lock contention. From Eric Dumazet. 11) The bonding layer has many demuxes in it's fast path, and an RCU conversion was started back in 3.11, several changes here extend the RCU usage to even more locations. From Ding Tianhong and Wang Yufen, based upon suggestions by Nikolay Aleksandrov and Veaceslav Falico. 12) Allow stackability of segmentation offloads to, in particular, allow segmentation offloading over tunnels. From Eric Dumazet. 13) Significantly improve the handling of secret keys we input into the various hash functions in the inet hashtables, TCP fast open, as well as syncookies. From Hannes Frederic Sowa. The key fundamental operation is "net_get_random_once()" which uses static keys. Hannes even extended this to ipv4/ipv6 fragmentation handling and our generic flow dissector. 14) The generic driver layer takes care now to set the driver data to NULL on device removal, so it's no longer necessary for drivers to explicitly set it to NULL any more. Many drivers have been cleaned up in this way, from Jingoo Han. 15) Add a BPF based packet scheduler classifier, from Daniel Borkmann. 16) Improve CRC32 interfaces and generic SKB checksum iterators so that SCTP's checksumming can more cleanly be handled. Also from Daniel Borkmann. 17) Add a new PMTU discovery mode, IP_PMTUDISC_INTERFACE, which forces using the interface MTU value. This helps avoid PMTU attacks, particularly on DNS servers. From Hannes Frederic Sowa. 18) Use generic XPS for transmit queue steering rather than internal (re-)implementation in virtio-net. From Jason Wang. * git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/davem/net-next: (1622 commits) random32: add test cases for taus113 implementation random32: upgrade taus88 generator to taus113 from errata paper random32: move rnd_state to linux/random.h random32: add prandom_reseed_late() and call when nonblocking pool becomes initialized random32: add periodic reseeding random32: fix off-by-one in seeding requirement PHY: Add RTL8201CP phy_driver to realtek xtsonic: add missing platform_set_drvdata() in xtsonic_probe() macmace: add missing platform_set_drvdata() in mace_probe() ethernet/arc/arc_emac: add missing platform_set_drvdata() in arc_emac_probe() ipv6: protect for_each_sk_fl_rcu in mem_check with rcu_read_lock_bh vlan: Implement vlan_dev_get_egress_qos_mask as an inline. ixgbe: add warning when max_vfs is out of range. igb: Update link modes display in ethtool netfilter: push reasm skb through instead of original frag skbs ip6_output: fragment outgoing reassembled skb properly MAINTAINERS: mv643xx_eth: take over maintainership from Lennart net_sched: tbf: support of 64bit rates ixgbe: deleting dfwd stations out of order can cause null ptr deref ixgbe: fix build err, num_rx_queues is only available with CONFIG_RPS ... |

"This is a re-do of the net-next pull request for the current merge
window. The only difference from the one I made the other day is that
this has Eliezer's interface renames and the timeout handling changes
made based upon your feedback, as well as a few bug fixes that have
trickeled in.
Highlights:
1) Low latency device polling, eliminating the cost of interrupt
handling and context switches. Allows direct polling of a network
device from socket operations, such as recvmsg() and poll().
Currently ixgbe, mlx4, and bnx2x support this feature.

Merge Kconfig menu diet patches from Dave Hansen: "I think the "Kernel Hacking" menu has gotten a bit out of hand. It is over 120 lines long on my system with everything enabled and options are scattered around it haphazardly. http://sr71.net/~dave/linux/kconfig-horror.png Let's try to introduce some sanity. This set takes that 120 lines down to 55 and makes it vastly easier to find some things. It's a start. This set stands on its own, but there is plenty of room for follow-up patches. The arch-specific debug options still end up getting stuck in the top-level "kernel hacking" menu. OPTIMIZE_INLINING, for instance, could obviously go in to the "compiler options" menu, but the fact that it is defined in arch/ in a separate Kconfig file keeps it on its own for the moment. consolidate per-arch stack overflow debugging options
Original posting: http://lkml.kernel.org/r/20121214184202.F54094D9@kernel.stglabs.ibm.com Several architectures have similar stack debugging config options. They all pretty much do the same thing, some with slightly differing help text. This patch changes the architectures to instead enable a Kconfig boolean, and then use that boolean in the generic Kconfig.debug to present the actual menu option. This removes a bunch of duplication and adds consistency across arches. Signed-off-by: Dave Hansen <dave@linux.vnet.ibm.com> Reviewed-by: H. Pull voluntary preemption fixes from Ingo Molnar: "This tree contains a speedup which is achieved through better might_sleep()/might_fault() preemption point annotations for uaccess functions, by Michael S Tsirkin: 1. The only reason uaccess routines might sleep is if they fault. Make this explicit for all architectures. 2. A voluntary preemption point in uaccess functions means compiler can't inline them efficiently, this breaks assumptions that they are very fast and small that e.g. net code seems to make. Remove this preemption point so behaviour matches with what callers assume. 3. Accesses (e.g through socket ops) to kernel memory with KERNEL_DS like net/sunrpc does will never sleep. Remove an unconditinal might_sleep() in the might_fault() inline in kernel.h (used when PROVE_LOCKING is not set). 4. Accesses with pagefault_disable() return EFAULT but won't cause caller to sleep. Check for that and thus avoid might_sleep() when PROVE_LOCKING is set. These changes offer a nice speedup for CONFIG_PREEMPT_VOLUNTARY=y kernels, here's a network bandwidth measurement between a virtual machine and the host: before: incoming: 7122.77 Mb/s outgoing: 8480.37 Mb/s after: incoming: 8619.24 Mb/s [ +21.0% ] outgoing: 9455.42 Mb/s [ +11.5% ] I kept these changes in a separate tree, separate from scheduler changes, because it's a mixed MM and scheduler topic" * 'sched-mm-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip: mm, sched: Allow uaccess in atomic with pagefault_disable() mm, sched: Drop voluntary schedule from might_fault() x86: uaccess s/might_sleep/might_fault/ tile: uaccess s/might_sleep/might_fault/ powerpc: uaccess s/might_sleep/might_fault/ mn10300: uaccess s/might_sleep/might_fault/ microblaze: uaccess s/might_sleep/might_fault/ m32r: uaccess s/might_sleep/might_fault/ frv: uaccess s/might_sleep/might_fault/ arm64: uaccess s/might_sleep/might_fault/ asm-generic: uaccess s/might_sleep/might_fault/ |

Merge branch 'for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/viro/vfs
Pull VFS patches (part 1) from Al Viro: "The major change in this pile is ->readdir() replacement with ->iterate(), dealing with ->f_pos races in ->readdir() instances for good. There's a lot more, but I'd prefer to split the pull request into several stages and this is the first obvious cutoff point." * 'for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/viro/vfs: (67 commits) [readdir] constify ->actor [readdir] ->readdir() is gone [readdir] convert ecryptfs [readdir] convert coda [readdir] convert ocfs2 [readdir] convert fatfs [readdir] convert xfs [readdir] convert btrfs [readdir] convert hostfs [readdir] convert afs [readdir] convert ncpfs [readdir] convert hfsplus [readdir] convert hfs [readdir] convert befs [readdir] convert cifs [readdir] convert freevxfs [readdir] convert fuse [readdir] convert hpfs reiserfs: switch reiserfs_readdir_dentry to inode reiserfs: is_privroot_deh() needs only directory inode, actually ... |

mn10300: Use early_param() to parse "mem=" parameter
This fixes the problem that "init=" options may not be passed to kernel
correctly.
parse_mem_cmdline() of mn10300 arch gets rid of "mem=" string from
redboot_command_line. Then init_setup() parses the "init=" options from
static_command_line, which is a copy of redboot_command_line, and keeps
the pointer to the init options in execute_command variable.
