The skb->cb (control buffer, 48 bytes) is available to the skb
upon skb allocation. You can fill it up imediately after skb
allocation. ath9k was copying onto the skb->cb the data from the
processed skb for mac80211 from a stack struct ieee80211_rx_status
structure. This is unnecessary, instead use the skb->cb for the
rx status immediately after the skb becomes available and DMA
synched.
Additionally, avoid the copy of the skb->cb also for virtual wiphys
as skb_copy() will copy over the skb->cb for us as well.

ath9k virtual wiphys all share the same internal buffer space
for TX but they do not share the mac80211 skb queues. When
ath9k detects it is running low on buffer space to TX it tells
mac80211 to stop sending it skbs its way but it always does
this only for the primary wiphy. This means mac80211 won't know
its best to avoid sending ath9k more skbs on a separate virtual
wiphy. The same issue is present for reliving the skb queue.
Since ath9k does not keep track of which virtual wiphy is hammering
on TX silence all wiphy's TX when we're low on buffer space. When
we're free on buffer space only bother informing the virtual wiphy
which is active that we have free buffers.

We use the ieee80211_hw for radio enable/disable but the wrong
structure hw was being used in consideration for virtual wiphys
as each virtual wiphy has its own ieee80211_hw struct.
Just pass the hw struct to ensure we use the right one. This should
fix the hw used and passed for radio enable/disable. This includes
the stoping / starting of the software TX queues so mac80211 doesn't
send us data for a specific virtual wiphy. ath9k already takes care
of pausing virtual wiphys and stopping the respective queues on its
own, but this should handle the idle mac80211 conf calls as well.

The way idle configuration detection was implemented as
busted due to the fact that it assumed the ath9k virtual wiphy,
the aphy, would be marked as inactive if it was not used but
it turns out an aphy is always active if its the only wiphy
present. We need to distinguish between aphy activity and
idleness so we now add an idle bool for the aphy and mark
it as such based on the passed IEEE80211_CONF_CHANGE_IDLE
from mac80211.
Previous to all_wiphys_idle would never be true when using
only one device so we never really were using
IEEE80211_CONF_CHANGE_IDLE -- we never turned the radio
off or on upon IEEE80211_CONF_CHANGE_IDLE changes as radio
changes depended on all_wiphys_idle being true either to
turn the radio on or off. Since it was always false for
one device this code was doing nothing.

Document what we can about the RF analog front ends (radios)
of Atheros 802.11n devices. What should be clearer now is the
what we do for old pre AR5416 and AR5418 MAC based devices in
comparison to the modern sigle-chip 802.11n solutions.
All devices after AR9280 are single chip and require less
programming -- the RF registers no longer need to be initialized
as they all have the RF analog front end embedded together with
the MAC/BB; this includes the AR9271. Older devices such as the
ones with the AR5416 MACs (PCI) or AR5418 MACs (PCI-E) have an
external 2.4 GHz AR2133 radio or a dual band 2.4 GHz / 5 GHz
AR5133 radio. These external radios require additional programming
of the RF registers.

is bb_spectral_scan_ena, for 1.0 we'll set this to 0x1.
* Ensuring we get the correct noise floor values -115 ~ -118

- bb_ch1_gain_force

- bb_ch1_max_oc_gain
* 0x8120[2] mc_mic_new_location_enable is changed to 0x1. The MAC team

* 0x9910[0] bb_spectral_scan_ena is changed to 0x0.

ASPM is a bus specific operation. In the future other buses may
support bluetooth coexistance, an example is USB. To this end
move the current routine which disables ASPM into pci.c, and declare

When the TSF is reset power save state is disabled and
then restored. The helpers to disable power save and restore
it use a lock provided by the driver core. Move the callers
of the helpers outside of the hw code.
We reset the TSF when mac80211 tells us and on the beacon.c
helper ath9k_hw_beaconinit() when it is made explicitly required.
Add a helper on beacon.c which will deal with ps awake/restore

Keep on btcoex.c only hardware access helpers, move the
driver core specific code to main.c. To accomplish
this we had to split ath_init_btcoex_info() into two parts,
the driver core part -- ath_init_btcoex_timer() and the hw
specific part -- ath9k_hw_init_btcoex_hw_info(). This
highlights how ath_gen_timer is part of the driver core, not
hw related, so stuff that into ath_btcoex struct.
The ath9k_hw_btcoex_init() code is now put inline on

* Calling wiphy_rfkill_stop_polling() in ath9k_stop

* Calling ath_radio_{enable/disable} without checking the current

Over time, a whole bunch of drivers have come up
with their own scheme to delay the configure_filter
operation to a workqueue. To be able to simplify
things, allow configure_filter to sleep, and add
a new prepare_multicast callback that drivers that
need the multicast address list implement. This new
callback must be atomic, but most drivers either
don't care or just calculate a hash which can be
done atomically and then uploaded to the hardware
non-atomically.
A cursory look suggests that at76c50x-usb, ar9170,
mwl8k (which is actually very broken now), rt2x00,

The mac80211 workqueue exists to enable mac80211 and drivers
to queue their own work on a single threaded workqueue. mac80211
takes care to flush the workqueue during suspend but we never
really had requirements on drivers for how they should use
the workqueue in consideration for suspend.
We extend mac80211 to document how the mac80211 workqueue should
be used, how it should not be used and finally move raw access to
the workqueue to mac80211 only. Drivers and mac80211 use helpers
to queue work onto the mac80211 workqueue:
* ieee80211_queue_work()
* ieee80211_queue_delayed_work()
These helpers will now warn if mac80211 already completed its
suspend cycle and someone is trying to queue work. mac80211
flushes the mac80211 workqueue prior to suspend a few times,
but we haven't taken the care to ensure drivers won't add more
work after suspend. To help with this we add a warning when
someone tries to add work and mac80211 already completed the
suspend cycle.
Drivers should ensure they cancel any work or delayed work
in the mac80211 stop() callback.

range when compared to 11na ht20 mode where the lowest rate is 6.5Mbps.
To improve the range, make 6.5Mbps as the lowest rate in 11na ht40 mode,
this improves the range by approximately 2dB. 11ng ht40 does not have
this issue as it also has basic rates (1, 2, 5.5 and 11).

* Led blink work
* TX hang monitoring work
* internal wiphy schedular work
* channel change work done for internal wiphy schedular

channel channel change work we should first cancel the wiphy
schedular work and then the channel change work.

There is a small window where the mac80211 changes the IEEE80211_CONF_PS

condition if we are checking the flag in the same time. Avoid it by
introducing a local variable, and using that instead of checking the
IEEE80211_CONF_PS flag directly.

The hardware doesn't generate interrupts in some cases and so work
around this by monitoring the TX status periodically and reset the
chip if required.
This behavior of the hardware not generating the TX interrupts can
be noticed through ath9k debugfs interrupt statistics when heavy
traffic is being sent from STA to AP. One can easily see this behavior
when the STA is transmitting at a higher rates. The interrupt statistics
in the debugfs interface clearly shows that only RX interrupts alone
being generated and TX being stuck.
TX should be monitored through a timer and reset the chip only when
frames are queued to the hardware but TX interrupts are not generated
for the same even after one second. Also, we shouldn't remove holding
descriptor from AC queue if it happens to be the only descriptor and
schedule TX aggregation regarless of queue depth as it improves
scheduling of AMPDUs from software to hardware queue.

Running iperf along with p2p traffic on both TX and RX side then
stop one side, then stop the other side, then start it up again,
eventually the STA gets into a mode that it can not pass data at
all.
A hardware workaround for invalid RSSI can make FIFO write pointer
to jump over read pointer, causing RX data corruption and repeated
DMA. Both TX and RX works fine when the workaround is disabled.
To replace the original hardware work around, software looks for
frames with post delimiter CRC error and mark the RSSI invalid so
that the upperlayer will not use the RSSI associated with this
frame. So disable the hardware workaround by updating the appropriate
registers.

We were not differentiating quality between legacy and HT
configurations. We change this to consider the differences.
New theory for reporting quality:
At a hardware RSSI of 45 you will be able to use MCS 7 reliably.
At a hardware RSSI of 45 you will be able to use MCS 15 reliably.
At a hardware RSSI of 35 you should be able use 54 Mbps reliably.
MCS 7 is the highets MCS index usable by a 1-stream device.
MCS 15 is the highest MCS index usable by a 2-stream device.
All ath9k devices are either 1-stream or 2-stream.
How many bars you see is derived from the qual reporting.
A more elaborate scheme can be used here but it requires tables
of SNR/throughput for each possible mode used. For the MCS table
you can refer to the wireless wiki:

Within mac80211, we often need to copy the rx status into
skb->cb. This is wasteful, as drivers could be building it
in there to start with. This patch changes the API so that
drivers are expected to pass the RX status in skb->cb, now
accessible as IEEE80211_SKB_RXCB(skb). It also updates all
drivers to pass the rx status in there, but only by making
them memcpy() it into place before the call to the receive
function (ieee80211_rx(_irqsafe)). Each driver can now be
optimised on its own schedule.

When we reclaim the tx desc, we always assume that the
last desc is a holding desc, which is not true, and skip it.
If the tx queue is drained during channel change, internal
reset and etc, the last descriptor may not be the holding
descriptor and we fail to reclaim them. This results in the
following two issues.
1. Tx stuck - We drop all the frames coming from upper layer
due to shortage in tx desc.
2. Crash - If we fail to reclaim a tx descriptor, we miss to
update the tx BA window with the seq number of the frame
associated to that desc, which, at some point, result in
the following crash due to an assert failure in ath_tx_addto_baw().
This patch fixes these two issues.

An earlier commit, 'ath9k: remove dummy PCI "retry timeout" fix', removed
code that was documented to disable RETRY_TIMEOUT register (PCI reg
0x41) since it was claimed to be a no-op. However, it turns out that
there are some combinations of hosts and ath9k-supported cards for
which this is not a no-op (reg 0x41 has value 0x80, not 0) and this
code (or something similar) is needed. In such cases, the driver may
be next to unusable due to very frequent PCI FATAL interrupts from the
card.
Reverting the earlier commit, i.e., restoring the RETRY_TIMEOUT
disabling, seems to resolve the issue. Since the removal of this code
was not based on any known issue and was purely a cleanup change, the
safest option here is to just revert that commit. Should there be
desire to clean this up in the future, the change will need to be
tested with a more complete coverage of cards and host systems.

This patch completely rewrites the rfkill core to address
the following deficiencies:
* all rfkill drivers need to implement polling where necessary
rather than having one central implementation
* updating the rfkill state cannot be done from arbitrary
contexts, forcing drivers to use schedule_work and requiring
lots of code
* rfkill drivers need to keep track of soft/hard blocked
internally -- the core should do this
* the rfkill API has many unexpected quirks, for example being
asymmetric wrt. alloc/free and register/unregister
* rfkill can call back into a driver from within a function the
driver called -- this is prone to deadlocks and generally
should be avoided
* rfkill-input pointlessly is a separate module
* drivers need to #ifdef rfkill functions (unless they want to
depend on or select RFKILL) -- rfkill should provide inlines
that do nothing if it isn't compiled in
* the rfkill structure is not opaque -- drivers need to initialise
it correctly (lots of sanity checking code required) -- instead
force drivers to pass the right variables to rfkill_alloc()
* the documentation is hard to read because it always assumes the
reader is completely clueless and contains way TOO MANY CAPS
* the rfkill code needlessly uses a lot of locks and atomic
operations in locked sections
* fix LED trigger to actually change the LED when the radio state
changes -- this wasn't done before

It looks like mac80211 can request the driver to start beaconing with
a beacon interval of zero in some cases (at least for mesh point). This
does not sound correct and something may need to be fixed in
mac80211. However, taken into account the unpleasantness of getting
stuck in an infinite busy loop with rtnl_lock held, let's add a quick
workaround in the driver to avoid the worst symptom while someone more
familiar with the mesh implementation can figure out what should be done
with mac80211 as far as beacon interval configuration is concerned.

I have a TrendNet 652-BRP running OpenWRT + ath9k very well. The only
problem is that the beacon gets stuck maybe once a day. After
Vasanthakumar Thiagarajan's "ath9k: cleanup beacon parameters

detected the stuck beacon, and did a reset. But it would fail the
SC_OP_TSF_RESET check in ath_beacon_config_ap. This patch gets the beacon

Some APs seem to drift away from the expected TBTT (timestamp %
beacon_int_in_usec differs quite a bit from zero) which can result in
us waking up way too early to receive a Beacon frame. In order to work
around this, re-configure the Beacon timers after having received a
Beacon frame from the AP (i.e., when we know the offset between the
expected TBTT and the actual time the AP is sending out the Beacon
frame).

The previous version used a simple loop to go through all Beacon
frames when determining the next TBTT and DTIM count. This is not too
bad for the case where the setup happens before timesync (i.e., very
small TSF), but this can become very heavy operation if a short Beacon
interval is used and the current TSF is large.
In preparation for a patch to update timer setup based on Beacon
timestamp, optimize this routine to take fixed time regardless of the
actual TSF value.

mac80211 does not set PM field for normal data frames, so we need to
update that based on the current PS mode when using PS-Poll
(timeout=0) power save mode.
This allows the AP to remain in sync with our PS state. However, there
is still a potential race condition between PS state changes when
multiple TX queues are used and nullfunc and PS-Poll frames use
different queue. That corner case may need to be handled separately by
changing which queue is used either in ath9k or mac80211.

The previous implementation was moving back to NETWORK SLEEP state
immediately after receiving a Beacon frame. This means that we are
unlikely to receive all the buffered broadcast/multicast frames that
would be sent after DTIM Beacon frames. Fix this by parsing the Beacon
frame and remaining awake, if needed, to receive the buffered
broadcast/multicast frames. The last buffered frame will trigger the
move back into NETWORK SLEEP state.
If the last broadcast/multicast frame is not received properly (or if
the AP fails to send it), the next Beacon frame will work as a backup
trigger for returning into NETWORK SLEEP.
A new debug type, PS (debug=0x800 module parameter), is added to make
it easier to debug potential power save issues in the
future. Currently, this is only used for the Beacon frame and buffered
broadcast/multicast receiving.

We currently have two beacon interval configuration knobs:
hw.conf.beacon_int and vif.bss_info.beacon_int. This is
rather confusing, even though the former is used when we
beacon ourselves and the latter when we are associated to
an AP.
This just deprecates the hw.conf.beacon_int setting in favour
of always using vif.bss_info.beacon_int. Since it touches all
the beaconing IBSS code anyway, we can also add support for
the cfg80211 IBSS beacon interval configuration easily.
NOTE: The hw.conf.beacon_int setting is retained for now due
to drivers still using it -- I couldn't untangle all

A full HW reset needs to be done on termination of a scan run.
Not setting SC_OP_FULL_RESET resulted in doing a
fast channel change.

ath9k_hw_getisr() doesn't appear to set anything in the status mask for
PCI FATAL or PERR interrupts (AR_INTR_SYNC_HOST1_FATAL/PERR), which
the open-source HAL seems to do. This means that the card isn't reset
after these interrupts.
This patch seems to fix a problem where the wireless drops out with an
"ath9k: received PCI FATAL interrupt" in dmesg after some time; the
hardware is an AR5416 in an ASUS WL-500W running 2.6.28.7 (OpenWRT) and
compat-wireless 2009-03-31.
