mm: convert return type of handle_mm_fault() caller to vm_fault_t
Use new return type vm_fault_t for fault handler. For now, this is just
documenting that the function returns a VM_FAULT value rather than an
errno. Once all instances are converted, vm_fault_t will become a
distinct type.

arm64 updates for 4.19
A bunch of good stuff in here: - Wire up support for qspinlock, replacing our trusty ticket lock code - Add an IPI to flush_icache_range() to ensure that stale instructions fetched into the pipeline are discarded along with the I-cache lines - Support for the GCC "stackleak" plugin - Support for restartable sequences, plus an arm64 port for the selftest - Kexec/kdump support on systems booting with ACPI - Rewrite of our syscall entry code in C, which allows us to zero the GPRs on entry from userspace - Support for chained PMU counters, allowing 64-bit event counters to be constructed on current CPUs - Ensure scheduler topology information is kept up-to-date with CPU hotplug events - Re-enable support for huge vmalloc/IO mappings now that the core code has the correct hooks to use break-before-make sequences - Miscellaneous, non-critical fixes and cleanups -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1 iQEcBAABCgAGBQJbbV41AAoJELescNyEwWM0WoEIALhrKtsIn6vqFlSs/w6aDuJL cMWmFxjTaKLmIq2+cJIdFLOJ3CH80Pu9gB+nEv/k+cZdCTfUVKfRf28HTpmYWsht bb4AhdHMC7yFW752BHk+mzJspeC8h/2Rm8wMuNVplZ3MkPrwo3vsiuJTofLhVL/y BihlU3+5sfBvCYIsWnuEZIev+/I/s/qm1ASiqIcKSrFRZP6VTt5f9TC75vFI8seW 7yc3odKb0CArexB8yBjiPNziehctQF42doxQyL45hezLfWw4qdgHOSiwyiOMxEz9 Fwwpp8Tx33SKLNJgqoqYznGW9PhYJ7n2Kslv19uchJrEV+mds82vdDNaWRULld4= =kQn6 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'arm64-upstream' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arm64/linux Pull arm64 updates from Will Deacon: "A bunch of good stuff in here. Kconfig: consolidate the "Kernel hacking" menu
Move the source of lib/Kconfig.debug and arch/$(ARCH)/Kconfig.debug to the top-level Kconfig. For two architectures that means moving their arch-specific symbols in that menu into a new arch Kconfig.debug file, and for a few more creating a dummy file so that we can include it unconditionally. Also move the actual 'Kernel hacking' menu to lib/Kconfig.debug, where it belongs. Signed-off-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Signed-off-by: Masahiro Yamada <yamada.masahiro@socionext.com> |

ia64: use asm-generic/io.h
asm-generic/io.h provides a generic implementation of all I/O accessors, which the architectures can override. Since ia64 does not provide readsl/writesl etc, any driver using those fails to build, and including asm-generic/io.h will provide the missing interfaces, as well as any other future interfaces that get added there. We need to #define a couple of symbols to themselves in the ia64 to ensure that we use the ia64 specific version of those rather than the generic one. There should be no other effect than adding {read,write}s{b,w,l}() as well as {in,out}s{b,w,l}_p(), which were also not provided by ia64 but are provided by the generic header for historic reasons. arm64: fix ACPI dependencies
Kconfig reports a warning on x86 builds after the ARM64 dependency
was added.
drivers/acpi/Kconfig:6:error: recursive dependency detected!
drivers/acpi/Kconfig:6: symbol ACPI depends on EFI
This rephrases the dependency to keep the ARM64 details out of the
shared Kconfig file, so Kconfig no longer gets confused by it.
For consistency, all three architectures that support ACPI now
select ARCH_SUPPORTS_ACPI in exactly the configuration in which
they allow it. We still need the 'default x86', as each one
wants a different default: default-y on x86, default-n on arm64,
and always-y on ia64.

mm: use helper functions for allocating and freeing vm_area structs
The vm_area_struct is one of the most fundamental memory management objects, but the management of it is entirely open-coded evertwhere, ranging from allocation and freeing (using kmem_cache_[z]alloc and kmem_cache_free) to initializing all the fields. We want to unify this in order to end up having some unified initialization of the vmas, and the first step to this is to at least have basic allocation functions. Right now those functions are literally just wrappers around the kmem_cache_*() calls. This is a purely mechanical conversion: # new vma: kmem_cache_zalloc(vm_area_cachep, GFP_KERNEL) -> vm_area_alloc() # copy old vma kmem_cache_alloc(vm_area_cachep, GFP_KERNEL) -> vm_area_dup(old) # free vma kmem_cache_free(vm_area_cachep, vma) -> vm_area_free(vma) to the point where the old vma passed in to the vm_area_dup() function isn't even used yet (because I've left all the old manual initialization alone). pid: Implement PIDTYPE_TGID
Everywhere except in the pid array we distinguish between a tasks pid and a tasks tgid (thread group id). Even in the enumeration we want that distinction sometimes so we have added __PIDTYPE_TGID. With leader_pid we almost have an implementation of PIDTYPE_TGID in struct signal_struct. Add PIDTYPE_TGID as a first class member of the pid_type enumeration and into the pids array. Then remove the __PIDTYPE_TGID special case and the leader_pid in signal_struct. The net size increase is just an extra pointer added to struct pid and an extra pair of pointers of an hlist_node added to task_struct. The effect on code maintenance is the removal of a number of special cases today and the potential to remove many more special cases as PIDTYPE_TGID gets used to it's fullest. The long term potential is allowing zombie thread group leaders to exit, which will remove a lot more special cases in the code. Signed-off-by: "Eric W. Biederman" <ebiederm@xmission.com> |

pids: Move the pgrp and session pid pointers from task_struct to signal_struct
To access these fields the code always has to go to group leader so going to signal struct is no loss and is actually a fundamental simplification. This saves a little bit of memory by only allocating the pid pointer array once instead of once for every thread, and even better this removes a few potential races caused by the fact that group_leader can be changed by de_thread, while signal_struct can not. atomics/treewide: Make test ops optional
Some of the atomics return the result of a test applied after the atomic operation, and almost all architectures implement these as trivial wrappers around the underlying atomic. Specifically: * <atomic>_inc_and_test(v) is (<atomic>_inc_return(v) == 0) * <atomic>_dec_and_test(v) is (<atomic>_dec_return(v) == 0) * <atomic>_sub_and_test(i, v) is (<atomic>_sub_return(i, v) == 0) * <atomic>_add_negative(i, v) is (<atomic>_add_return(i, v) < 0) Rather than have these definitions duplicated in all architectures, with minor inconsistencies in formatting and documentation, let's make these operations optional, with default fallbacks as above. Implementations must now provide a preprocessor symbol. The instrumented atomics are updated accordingly. atomics/treewide: Rename __atomic_add_unless() => atomic_fetch_add_unless()
While __atomic_add_unless() was originally intended as a building-block for atomic_add_unless(), it's now used in a number of places around the kernel. It's the only common atomic operation named __atomic*(), rather than atomic_*(), and for consistency it would be better named atomic_fetch_add_unless(). This lack of consistency is slightly confusing, and gets in the way of scripting atomics. Given that, let's clean things up and promote it to an official part of the atomics API, in the form of atomic_fetch_add_unless(). This patch converts definitions and invocations over to the new name, including the instrumented version, using the following script: ---- git grep -w __atomic_add_unless | while read line; do sed -i '{s/\<__atomic_add_unless\>/atomic_fetch_add_unless/}' "${line%%:*}"; done git grep -w __arch_atomic_add_unless | while read line; do sed -i '{s/\<__arch_atomic_add_unless\>/arch_atomic_fetch_add_unless/}' "${line%%:*}"; done ---- Note that we do not have atomic{64,_long}_fetch_add_unless(), which will be introduced by later patches. bpf/error-inject/kprobes: Clear current_kprobe and enable preempt in kprobe
Clear current_kprobe and enable preemption in kprobe even if pre_handler returns !0. This simplifies function override using kprobes. Jprobe used to require to keep the preemption disabled and keep current_kprobe until it returned to original function entry. For this reason kprobe_int3_handler() and similar arch dependent kprobe handers checks pre_handler result and exit without enabling preemption if the result is !0. After removing the jprobe, Kprobes does not need to keep preempt disabled even if user handler returns !0 anymore. But since the function override handler in error-inject and bpf is also returns !0 if it overrides a function, to balancing the preempt count, it enables preemption and reset current kprobe by itself. That is a bad design that is very buggy. This fixes such unbalanced preempt-count and current_kprobes setting in kprobes, bpf and error-inject. Note: for powerpc and x86, this removes all preempt_disable from kprobe_ftrace_handler because ftrace callbacks are called under preempt disabled. treewide: kzalloc() -> kcalloc()
The kzalloc() function has a 2-factor argument form, kcalloc(). ia64: disable CONFIG_PERFMON at least for now
Al noted that the semantics of the ia64 perfmon mmap() is really wrong, and can cause serious VM problems. Before we look at whether it needs to be fixed, let's see if anybody even uses it, and mark it broken. It may be that we can just remove the code entirely. Merge branch 'irq-core-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip
Pull irq updates from Thomas Gleixner: - Consolidation of softirq pending: The softirq mask and its accessors/mutators have many implementations scattered around many architectures. Most do the same things consisting in a field in a per-cpu struct (often irq_cpustat_t) accessed through per-cpu ops. We can provide instead a generic efficient version that most of them can use. In fact s390 is the only exception because the field is stored in lowcore. - Support for level!?! triggered MSI (ARM) Over the past couple of years, we've seen some SoCs coming up with ways of signalling level interrupts using a new flavor of MSIs, where the MSI controller uses two distinct messages: one that raises a virtual line, and one that lowers it. The target MSI controller is in charge of maintaining the state of the line. This allows for a much simplified HW signal routing (no need to have hundreds of discrete lines to signal level interrupts if you already have a memory bus), but results in a departure from the current idea the kernel has of MSIs. - Support for Meson-AXG GPIO irqchip - Large stm32 irqchip rework (suspend/resume, hierarchical domains) - More SPDX conversions * 'irq-core-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip: (36 commits) ARM: dts: stm32: Add exti support to stm32mp157 pinctrl ARM: dts: stm32: Add exti support for stm32mp157c pinctrl/stm32: Add irq_eoi for stm32gpio irqchip irqchip/stm32: Add suspend/resume support for hierarchy domain irqchip/stm32: Add stm32mp1 support with hierarchy domain irqchip/stm32: Prepare common functions irqchip/stm32: Add host and driver data structures irqchip/stm32: Add suspend support irqchip/stm32: Add falling pending register support irqchip/stm32: Checkpatch fix irqchip/stm32: Optimizes and cleans up stm32-exti irq_domain irqchip/meson-gpio: Add support for Meson-AXG SoCs dt-bindings: interrupt-controller: New binding for Meson-AXG SoC dt-bindings: interrupt-controller: Fix the double quotes softirq/s390: Move default mutators of overwritten softirq mask to s390 softirq/x86: Switch to generic local_softirq_pending() implementation softirq/sparc: Switch to generic local_softirq_pending() implementation softirq/powerpc: Switch to generic local_softirq_pending() implementation softirq/parisc: Switch to generic local_softirq_pending() implementation softirq/ia64: Switch to generic local_softirq_pending() implementation ... |

Pull siginfo updates from Eric Biederman: "This set of changes close the known issues with setting si_code to an invalid value, and with not fully initializing struct siginfo. There remains work to do on nds32, arc, unicore32, powerpc, arm, arm64, ia64 and x86 to get the code that generates siginfo into a simpler and more maintainable state. Most of that work involves refactoring the signal handling code and thus careful code review. Also not included is the work to shrink the in kernel version of struct siginfo. That depends on getting the number of places that directly manipulate struct siginfo under control, as it requires the introduction of struct kernel_siginfo for the in kernel things. kbuild: add machine size to CHECKFLAGS
By default, sparse assumes a 64bit machine when compiled on x86-64 and 32bit when compiled on anything else. This can of course create all sort of problems for the other archs, like issuing false warnings ('shift too big (32) for type unsigned long'), or worse, failing to emit legitimate warnings. Fix this by adding the -m32/-m64 flag, depending on CONFIG_64BIT, to CHECKFLAGS in the main Makefile (and so for all archs). Also, remove the now unneeded -m32/-m64 in arch specific Makefiles. swiotlb: move the SWIOTLB config symbol to lib/Kconfig
This way we have one central definition of it, and user can select it as needed. The new option is not user visible, which is the behavior it had in most architectures, with a few notable exceptions: - On x86_64 and mips/loongson3 it used to be user selectable, but defaulted to y. It now is unconditional, which seems like the right thing for 64-bit architectures without guaranteed availablity of IOMMUs. - on powerpc the symbol is user selectable and defaults to n, but many boards select it. This change assumes no working setup required a manual selection, but if that turned out to be wrong we'll have to add another select statement or two for the respective boards. arch: define the ARCH_DMA_ADDR_T_64BIT config symbol in lib/Kconfig
Define this symbol if the architecture either uses 64-bit pointers or the PHYS_ADDR_T_64BIT is set. This covers 95% of the old arch magic. dma-debug: move initialization to common code
Most mainstream architectures are using 65536 entries, so lets stick to that. If someone is really desperate to override it that can still be done through <asm/dma-mapping.h>, but I'd rather see a really good rationale for that. dma_debug_init is now called as a core_initcall, which for many architectures means much earlier, and provides dma-debug functionality earlier in the boot process. signal: Ensure every siginfo we send has all bits initialized
Call clear_siginfo to ensure every stack allocated siginfo is properly initialized before being passed to the signal sending functions. Note: It is not safe to depend on C initializers to initialize struct siginfo on the stack because C is allowed to skip holes when initializing a structure. The initialization of struct siginfo in tracehook_report_syscall_exit was moved from the helper user_single_step_siginfo into tracehook_report_syscall_exit itself, to make it clear that the local variable siginfo gets fully initialized. In a few cases the scope of struct siginfo has been reduced to make it clear that siginfo siginfo is not used on other paths in the function in which it is declared. Instances of using memset to initialize siginfo have been replaced with calls clear_siginfo for clarity. Signed-off-by: "Eric W. Biederman" <ebiederm@xmission.com> |

time: Add an asm-generic/compat.h file
We have a couple of files that try to include asm/compat.h on architectures where this is available. Those should generally use the higher-level linux/compat.h file, but that in turn fails to include asm/compat.h when CONFIG_COMPAT is disabled, unless we can provide that header on all architectures. This adds the asm/compat.h for all remaining architectures to simplify the dependencies. Architectures that are getting removed in linux-4.17 are not changed here, to avoid needless conflicts with the removal patches. mm: add ksys_mmap_pgoff() helper; remove in-kernel calls to sys_mmap_pgoff()
Using this helper allows us to avoid the in-kernel calls to the sys_mmap_pgoff() syscall. The ksys_ prefix denotes that this function is meant as a drop-in replacement for the syscall. In particular, it uses the same calling convention as sys_mmap_pgoff(). This patch is part of a series which removes in-kernel calls to syscalls. On this basis, the syscall entry path can be streamlined. For details, see http://lkml.kernel.org/r/20180325162527.GA17492@light.dominikbrodowski.net Cc: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Cc: linux-mm@kvack.org Signed-off-by: Dominik Brodowski <linux@dominikbrodowski.net> |

PCI/MSI: Don't set up INTx if MSI or MSI-X is enabled
If MSI or MSI-X is enabled, the device uses that. It uses INTx only if both MSI and MSI-X are disabled (see PCIe r4.0, sec 7.7.1.2), so if a device already has MSI or MSI-X enabled, there's no need to set up its legacy INTx interrupt. |

bug.h: work around GCC PR82365 in BUG()
Looking at functions with large stack frames across all architectures led me discovering that BUG() suffers from the same problem as fortify_panic(), which I've added a workaround for already. In short, variables that go out of scope by calling a noreturn function or __builtin_unreachable() keep using stack space in functions afterwards. A workaround that was identified is to insert an empty assembler statement just before calling the function that doesn't return. I'm adding a macro "barrier_before_unreachable()" to document this, and insert calls to that in all instances of BUG() that currently suffer from this problem. The files that saw the largest change from this had these frame sizes before, and much less with my patch: fs/ext4/inode.c:82:1: warning: the frame size of 1672 bytes is larger than 800 bytes [-Wframe-larger-than=] fs/ext4/namei.c:434:1: warning: the frame size of 904 bytes is larger than 800 bytes [-Wframe-larger-than=] fs/ext4/super.c:2279:1: warning: the frame size of 1160 bytes is larger than 800 bytes [-Wframe-larger-than=] fs/ext4/xattr.c:146:1: warning: the frame size of 1168 bytes is larger than 800 bytes [-Wframe-larger-than=] fs/f2fs/inode.c:152:1: warning: the frame size of 1424 bytes is larger than 800 bytes [-Wframe-larger-than=] net/netfilter/ipvs/ip_vs_core.c:1195:1: warning: the frame size of 1068 bytes is larger than 800 bytes [-Wframe-larger-than=] net/netfilter/ipvs/ip_vs_core.c:395:1: warning: the frame size of 1084 bytes is larger than 800 bytes [-Wframe-larger-than=] net/netfilter/ipvs/ip_vs_ftp.c:298:1: warning: the frame size of 928 bytes is larger than 800 bytes [-Wframe-larger-than=] net/netfilter/ipvs/ip_vs_ftp.c:418:1: warning: the frame size of 908 bytes is larger than 800 bytes [-Wframe-larger-than=] net/netfilter/ipvs/ip_vs_lblcr.c:718:1: warning: the frame size of 960 bytes is larger than 800 bytes [-Wframe-larger-than=] drivers/net/xen-netback/netback.c:1500:1: warning: the frame size of 1088 bytes is larger than 800 bytes [-Wframe-larger-than=] In case of ARC and CRIS, it turns out that the BUG() implementation actually does return (or at least the compiler thinks it does), resulting in lots of warnings about uninitialized variable use and leaving noreturn functions, such as: block/cfq-iosched.c: In function 'cfq_async_queue_prio': block/cfq-iosched.c:3804:1: error: control reaches end of non-void function [-Werror=return-type] include/linux/dmaengine.h: In function 'dma_maxpq': include/linux/dmaengine.h:1123:1: error: control reaches end of non-void function [-Werror=return-type] This makes them call __builtin_trap() instead, which should normally dump the stack and kill the current process, like some of the other architectures already do. I tried adding barrier_before_unreachable() to panic() and fortify_panic() as well, but that had very little effect, so I'm not submitting that patch. Vineet said: : For ARC, it is double win. : : 1. vfs: do bulk POLL* -> EPOLL* replacement
This is the mindless scripted replacement of kernel use of POLL* variables as described by Al, done by this script: for V in IN OUT PRI ERR RDNORM RDBAND WRNORM WRBAND HUP RDHUP NVAL MSG; do L=`git grep -l -w POLL$V | grep -v '^t' | grep -v /um/ | grep -v '^sa' | grep -v '/poll.h$'|grep -v '^D'` for f in $L; do sed -i "-es/^\([^\"]*\)\(\<POLL$V\>\)/\\1E\\2/" $f; done done with de-mangling cleanups yet to come. NOTE! On almost all architectures, the EPOLL* constants have the same values as the POLL* constants do. But they keyword here is "almost". For various bad reasons they aren't the same, and epoll() doesn't actually work quite correctly in some cases due to this on Sparc et al. The next patch from Al will sort out the final differences, and we should be all done. Scripted-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org> |

The core framework has a handful of patches this time around, mostly due
to the clk rate protection support added by Jerome Brunet. This feature will allow consumers to lock in a certain rate on the output of a clk so that things like audio playback don't hear pops when the clk frequency changes due to shared parent clks changing rates. Currently the clk API doesn't guarantee the rate of a clk stays at the rate you request after clk_set_rate() is called, so this new API will allow drivers to express that requirement. Beyond this, the core got some debugfs pretty printing patches and a couple minor non-critical fixes. Looking outside of the core framework diff we have some new driver additions and the removal of a legacy TI clk driver. Both of these hit high in the dirstat. Also, the removal of the asm-generic/clkdev.h file causes small one-liners in all the architecture Kbuild files. Merge branch 'for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/pmladek/printk
Pull printk updates from Petr Mladek: - Add a console_msg_format command line option: The value "default" keeps the old "[time stamp] text\n" format. The value "syslog" allows to see the syslog-like "<log level>[timestamp] text" format. This feature was requested by people doing regression tests, for example, 0day robot. They want to have both filtered and full logs at hands. - Reduce the risk of softlockup: Pass the console owner in a busy loop. This is a new approach to the old problem. It was first proposed by Steven Rostedt on Kernel Summit 2017. It marks a context in which the console_lock owner calls console drivers and could not sleep. On the other side, printk() callers could detect this state and use a busy wait instead of a simple console_trylock(). Finally, the console_lock owner checks if there is a busy waiter at the end of the special context and eventually passes the console_lock to the waiter. The hand-off works surprisingly well and helps in many situations. Well, there is still a possibility of the softlockup, for example, when the flood of messages stops and the last owner still has too much to flush. There is increasing number of people having problems with printk-related softlockups. We might eventually need to get better solution. Anyway, this looks like a good start and promising direction. - Do not allow to schedule in console_unlock() called from printk(): This reverts an older controversial commit. The reschedule helped to avoid softlockups. But it also slowed down the console output. This patch is obsoleted by the new console waiter logic described above. In fact, the reschedule made the hand-off less effective. - Deprecate "%pf" and "%pF" format specifier: It was needed on ia64, ppc64 and parisc64 to dereference function descriptors and show the real function address. It is done transparently by "%ps" and "pS" format specifier now. Sergey Senozhatsky found that all the function descriptors were in a special elf section and could be easily detected. - Remove printk_symbol() API: It has been obsoleted by "%pS" format specifier, and this change helped to remove few continuous lines and a less intuitive old API. - Remove redundant memsets: Sergey removed unnecessary memset when processing printk.devkmsg command line option. * 'for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/pmladek/printk: (27 commits) printk: drop redundant devkmsg_log_str memsets printk: Never set console_may_schedule in console_trylock() printk: Hide console waiter logic into helpers printk: Add console owner and waiter logic to load balance console writes kallsyms: remove print_symbol() function checkpatch: add pF/pf deprecation warning symbol lookup: introduce dereference_symbol_descriptor() parisc64: Add .opd based function descriptor dereference powerpc64: Add .opd based function descriptor dereference ia64: Add .opd based function descriptor dereference sections: split dereference_function_descriptor() openrisc: Fix conflicting types for _exext and _stext lib: do not use print_symbol() irq debug: do not use print_symbol() sysfs: do not use print_symbol() drivers: do not use print_symbol() x86: do not use print_symbol() unicore32: do not use print_symbol() sh: do not use print_symbol() mn10300: do not use print_symbol() ... |

Merge branch 'misc.poll' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/viro/vfs
Pull poll annotations from Al Viro: "This introduces a __bitwise type for POLL### bitmap, and propagates the annotations through the tree. Most of that stuff is as simple as 'make ->poll() instances return __poll_t and do the same to local variables used to hold the future return value'. Some of the obvious brainos found in process are fixed (e.g. POLLIN misspelled as POLL_IN). At that point the amount of sparse warnings is low and most of them are for genuine bugs - e.g. ->poll() instance deciding to return -EINVAL instead of a bitmap. I hadn't touched those in this series - it's large enough as it is. Another problem it has caught was eventpoll() ABI mess; select.c and eventpoll.c assumed that corresponding POLL### and EPOLL### were equal. That's true for some, but not all of them - EPOLL### are arch-independent, but POLL### are not. The last commit in this series separates userland POLL### values from the (now arch-independent) kernel-side ones, converting between them in the few places where they are copied to/from userland. AFAICS, this is the least disruptive fix preserving poll(2) ABI and making epoll() work on all architectures. As it is, it's simply broken on sparc - try to give it EPOLLWRNORM and it will trigger only on what would've triggered EPOLLWRBAND on other architectures. EPOLLWRBAND and EPOLLRDHUP, OTOH, are never triggered at all on sparc. With this patch they should work consistently on all architectures" * 'misc.poll' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/viro/vfs: (37 commits) make kernel-side POLL... arch-independent eventpoll: no need to mask the result of epi_item_poll() again eventpoll: constify struct epoll_event pointers debugging printk in sg_poll() uses %x to print POLL... bitmap annotate poll(2) guts 9p: untangle ->poll() mess ->si_band gets POLL... bitmap stored into a user-visible long field ring_buffer_poll_wait() return value used as return value of ->poll() the rest of drivers/*: annotate ->poll() instances media: annotate ->poll() instances fs: annotate ->poll() instances ipc, kernel, mm: annotate ->poll() instances net: annotate ->poll() instances apparmor: annotate ->poll() instances tomoyo: annotate ->poll() instances sound: annotate ->poll() instances acpi: annotate ->poll() instances crypto: annotate ->poll() instances block: annotate ->poll() instances x86: annotate ->poll() instances ... |

Merge branch 'siginfo-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace
Pull siginfo cleanups from Eric Biederman: "Long ago when 2.4 was just a testing release copy_siginfo_to_user was made to copy individual fields to userspace, possibly for efficiency and to ensure initialized values were not copied to userspace. Unfortunately the design was complex, it's assumptions unstated, and humans are fallible and so while it worked much of the time that design failed to ensure unitialized memory is not copied to userspace. This set of changes is part of a new design to clean up siginfo and simplify things, and hopefully make the siginfo handling robust enough that a simple inspection of the code can be made to ensure we don't copy any unitializied fields to userspace. The design is to unify struct siginfo and struct compat_siginfo into a single definition that is shared between all architectures so that anyone adding to the set of information shared with struct siginfo can see the whole picture. Hopefully ensuring all future si_code assignments are arch independent. The design is to unify copy_siginfo_to_user32 and copy_siginfo_from_user32 so that those function are complete and cope with all of the different cases documented in signinfo_layout. I don't think there was a single implementation of either of those functions that was complete and correct before my changes unified them. The design is to introduce a series of helpers including force_siginfo_fault that take the values that are needed in struct siginfo and build the siginfo structure for their callers. Ensuring struct siginfo is built correctly. The remaining work for 4.17 (unless someone thinks it is post -rc1 material) is to push usage of those helpers down into the architectures so that architecture specific code will not need to deal with the fiddly work of intializing struct siginfo, and then when struct siginfo is guaranteed to be fully initialized change copy siginfo_to_user into a simple wrapper around copy_to_user. Further there is work in progress on the issues that have been documented requires arch specific knowledge to sort out. The changes below fix or at least document all of the issues that have been found with siginfo generation. Then proceed to unify struct siginfo the 32 bit helpers that copy siginfo to and from userspace, and generally clean up anything that is not arch specific with regards to siginfo generation. It is a lot but with the unification you can of siginfo you can already see the code reduction in the kernel" * 'siginfo-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace: (45 commits) signal/memory-failure: Use force_sig_mceerr and send_sig_mceerr mm/memory_failure: Remove unused trapno from memory_failure signal/ptrace: Add force_sig_ptrace_errno_trap and use it where needed signal/powerpc: Remove unnecessary signal_code parameter of do_send_trap signal: Helpers for faults with specialized siginfo layouts signal: Add send_sig_fault and force_sig_fault signal: Replace memset(info,...) with clear_siginfo for clarity signal: Don't use structure initializers for struct siginfo signal/arm64: Better isolate the COMPAT_TASK portion of ptrace_hbptriggered ptrace: Use copy_siginfo in setsiginfo and getsiginfo signal: Unify and correct copy_siginfo_to_user32 signal: Remove the code to clear siginfo before calling copy_siginfo_from_user32 signal: Unify and correct copy_siginfo_from_user32 signal/blackfin: Remove pointless UID16_SIGINFO_COMPAT_NEEDED signal/blackfin: Move the blackfin specific si_codes to asm-generic/siginfo.h signal/tile: Move the tile specific si_codes to asm-generic/siginfo.h signal/frv: Move the frv specific si_codes to asm-generic/siginfo.h signal/ia64: Move the ia64 specific si_codes to asm-generic/siginfo.h signal/powerpc: Remove redefinition of NSIGTRAP on powerpc signal: Move addr_lsb into the _sigfault union for clarity ... |
