When perf processes build-id event, it creates DSOs with the build-id.
But it didn't set the module short name (like '[module-name]') so when
processing a kernel mmap event of the module, it cannot found the DSO as
it only checks the short names.
That leads for perf to create a same DSO without the build-id info and
it'll lookup the system path even if the DSO is already in the build-id
cache. After kernel was updated, perf cannot find the DSO and cannot
show symbols in it anymore.
You can see this if you have an old data file (w/ old kernel version):

There are 2 problems wrt. cpu_topology_map on systems with sparse CPUs:
1. offline/absent CPUs will have their socket_id and core_id set to -1
which triggers:
"socket_id number is too big.You may need to upgrade the perf tool."
2. size of cpu_topology_map (perf_env.cpu[]) is allocated based on
_SC_NPROCESSORS_CONF, but can be indexed with CPU ids going above.
Users of perf_env.cpu[] are using CPU id as index. This can lead
to read beyond what was allocated:

This patch changes HEADER_NRCPUS.nr_cpus_available from _SC_NPROCESSORS_CONF
to max_present_cpu and updates any user of cpu_topology_map to iterate
with nr_cpus_avail.
As a consequence HEADER_CPU_TOPOLOGY core_id and socket_id lists get longer,
but maintain compatibility with pre-patch state - index to cpu_topology_map is
CPU id.

When build_cpu_topo() encounters offline/absent CPUs, it fails to find any
sysfs entries and returns failure.
This leads to build_cpu_topology() and write_cpu_topology() failing as
well.
Because HEADER_CPU_TOPOLOGY has not been written, read leaves cpu_topology_map

In commit daeecbc0c4 ("perf tools: Add event_update event scale type"), the
handling of PERF_EVENT_UPDATE__SCALE cast struct event_update_event->data to a
pointer to event_update_event_scale, uses some field from this casted struct
and then ends up falling through to the handling of another event type,
PERF_EVENT_UPDATE__CPUS were it casts that ev->data to yet another type, oops,
fix it by inserting the missing break.
Noticed when building perf using gcc 7 on Fedora Rawhide:

This wasn't noticed because probably PERF_EVENT_UPDATE__CPUS comes after

The use_browser and perf_version_string variables are both declared in
perf.c but they are also referenced by other functions of libperf.a.
Therefore a user linking an own main() with libperf.a must declare those
two variables in their files even if the files never use the browser or
the version information.
This patch fixes this issue by moving use_browser and
perf_version_string out of perf.c to some other files.

Sukadev reported segfault on releasing perf env's numa data. It's due
to nr_numa_nodes being set no matter if the numa data gets parsed
properly. The perf_env__exit crash the on releasing non existed data.
Setting nr_numa_nodes only when data are parsed out properly.

The topology test case of 'perf test' seems to be broken on my x86
system - due to the comparison of a "core-id" with # of CPUs online.
There are 8 online CPUs:
$ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/online
0-7
but core-ids are not sequential and some core-ids exceed the number
of online CPUs.

Introducing the 'stat' feature to mark a perf.data as created by the
'perf stat record' command. It contains no data.
It's needed so that the report tools (report/script) can differentiate
sampling data from counting data, because they need to be treated in a
different way.
In the future it might be used to store the version of the stat storage
system used.

It'll serve as a base event for additional event attributes details,
that are not part of the attr event.
At the moment this event is just a dummy one without any specific
functionality. The type value will distinguish the update event details.
It'll come in the following patches.
The idea for this event is to be extensible for any update that the
event might need in the future.

The 'struct machine' represents the machine where the samples were/are
being collected, and we also have a 'struct perf_env' with extra details
about such machine, that we were collecting at 'perf.data' creation time
but we also needed when no perf.data file is being used, such as in
'perf top'.
So, get those structs closer together, as they provide a bigger picture
of the sample's environment.
In 'perf session', when the file argument is NULL, we can assume that
the tool is sampling the running machine, so point machine->env to
the global put in place in previous patches, while set it to the
perf_header.env one when reading from a file.
This paves the way for machine->env to be used in
perf_event__preprocess_sample to populate addr_location.socket.

Out of the code to write the cpu topology map in the perf.data file
header.
Now if one needs the CPU topology map for the running machine, one needs
to call perf_env__read_cpu_topology_map(perf_env) and the info will be
stored in perf_env.cpu.
For now we're using a global perf_env variable, that will have its
contents freed after we run a builtin.

Move this from two globals to perf_env global, that eventually will

This patch stores the cpu socket_id and core_id in a perf.data header,
and reads them into the perf_env struct when processing perf.data files.
The changes modifies the CPU_TOPOLOGY section, making sure it is
backward/forward compatible.
The patch checks the section size before reading the core and socket ids.
It never reads data crossing the section boundary. An old perf binary
without this patch can also correctly read the perf.data from a new perf
with this patch.
Because the new info is added at the end of the cpu_topology section, an
old perf tool ignores the extra data.

This has a different model than the 'thread' and 'map' struct lifetimes:
there is not a definitive "don't use this DSO anymore" event, i.e. we may
get many 'struct map' holding references to the '/usr/lib64/libc-2.20.so'
DSO but then at some point some DSO may have no references but we still
don't want to straight away release its resources, because "soon" we may
get a new 'struct map' that needs it and we want to reuse its symtab or
other resources.
So we need some way to garbage collect it when crossing some memory
usage threshold, which is left for anoter patch, for now it is
sufficient to release it when calling dsos__exit(), i.e. when deleting
the whole list as part of deleting the 'struct machine' containing it,
which will leave only referenced objects being used.

This is because __kmod_path__parse treats '[' leading names as kernel
name instead of names of kernel module.
If perf.data contains build information and the buildid of such modules
can be found, the dso->kernel of it will be set to DSO_TYPE_KERNEL by
__event_process_build_id(), not kernel module.
It will then be passed to dso__load() -> dso__load_kernel_sym() ->
dso__load_kcore() if --kallsyms is provided.
The refered patch adds NULL pointer checker to avoid segfault. However,
such kernel modules are still processed incorrectly.
This patch fixes __kmod_path__parse, makes it treat names like
'[test_module]' as kernel modules.
kmod-path.c is also update to reflect the above changes.

Add an index of AUX area tracing events within a perf.data file.
perf record uses a special user event PERF_RECORD_FINISHED_ROUND to
enable sorting of events in chunks instead of having to sort all events
altogether.
AUX area tracing events contain data that can span back to the very
beginning of the recording period. i.e. they do not obey the rules of
PERF_RECORD_FINISHED_ROUND.
By adding an index, AUX area tracing events can be found in advance and
the PERF_RECORD_FINISHED_ROUND approach works as usual.
The index is recorded with the auxtrace feature in the perf.data file.
A session reads the index but does not process it. An AUX area decoder
can queue all the AUX area data in advance using
auxtrace_queues__process_index() or otherwise process the index in some
custom manner.

Trying to analyze a big endian data file on little endian system fails
with the error:

The problem is that header parsing is not done correctly because the
file attributes are not swapped. Make it so. With this patch able to
analyze a sparc64 data file on x86_64.

Teach perf-record about the new perf_event_attr::{use_clockid, clockid}
fields. Add a simple parameter to set the clock (if any) to be used for
the events to be recorded into the data file.
Since we store the entire perf_event_attr in the EVENT_DESC section we
also already store the used clockid in the data file.

When check_magic_endian() is called, it checks the magic number in the
perf data file to determine version and endianness. But if it uses a

There's a problem on finding correct kernel symbols when perf report
runs on a different kernel. Although a part of the problem was solved
by the prior commit 0a7e6d1b68 ("perf tools: Check recorded kernel
version when finding vmlinux"), there's a remaining problem still.
When perf records samples, it synthesizes the kernel map using
machine__mmap_name() and ref_reloc_sym like "[kernel.kallsyms]_text".
You can easily see it using 'perf report -D' command.
After finishing record, it goes through the recorded events to find
maps/dsos actually used. And then record build-id info of them.
During this process, it needs to load symbols in a dso and it'd call
dso__load_vmlinux_path() since the default value of the symbol_conf.
try_vmlinux_path is true. However it changes dso->long_name to a real
path of the vmlinux file (e.g. /lib/modules/3.16.4/build/vmlinux) if one
is running on a custom kernel.
It resulted in that perf report reads the build-id of the vmlinux, but
cannot use it since it only knows about the [kernel.kallsyms] map. It
then falls back to possible vmlinux paths by using the recorded kernel
version (in case of a recent version) or a running kernel silently.
Even with the recent tools, this still has a possibility of breaking
the result. As the build directory is a symbolic link, if one built a
new kernel in the same directory with different source/config, the old
link to vmlinux will point the new file. So it's absolutely needed to
use build-id when finding a kernel image.
In this patch, it's now changed to try to search a kernel dso in the
existing dso list which was constructed during build-id table parsing
so it'll always have a build-id. If not found, search "[kernel.kallsyms]".

The dsos__write_buildid_table() is not use struct dso and it mostly
uses perf_session struct.
So rename it to perf_session__write_buildid_ table() so that it
corresponds to other related functions such as
perf_session__read_build_ids() and perf_session__cache_build_ids().

When 'perf record' write headers, it calls write_xxx in
tools/perf/util/header.c, and check return value. It rolls back all
working only when return value is negative.
This patch ensures write_cpudesc() and write_total_mem() return negative number
when error. Without this patch, headers reported by 'perf report' header is
error in some platform. Following output is caputured on ARM, which doesn't
contain "Processor" field in /proc/cpuinfo. See "cpudesc", "total memory" and
"cmdline" field.

After kernel 3.7 (commit b4b8f770eb),
/proc/cpuinfo replaces 'Processor' to 'model name'.
This patch makes CPUINFO_PROC to an array and provides two choices for
ARM, makes it compatible for different kernel version.

This is a precursor patch to enable long name searching of DSOs using
a rbtree.
In this patch, a new dsos structure is created which contains only a
list head structure for the moment.
The new dsos structure is used, in turn, in the machine structure for
the user_dsos and kernel_dsos fields.
Only the following 3 dsos functions are modified to accept the new dsos
structure parameter instead of list_head:
- dsos__add()
- dsos__find()
- __dsos__findnew()

Add ability to mark all dsos as hit.
This is needed in the case of Instruction Tracing. It takes so long to
decode an Instruction Trace that it is not worth doing just to determine
which dsos are hit. A later patch takes this into use.

After processing all group descriptors or encountering an error, it
frees all descriptors. However, current logic can leak memory since it
might not traverse all descriptors.
Note that the 'i' can have different value than nr_groups when an error
occurred and it's safe to call free(desc[i].name) for every desc since
we already make it NULL when it's reused for group names.

Most uses of the evsel constructor are followed by a call to
perf_evlist__add with an idex of evlist->nr_entries, so make rename
the current constructor to perf_evsel__new_idx and remove the need
for passing the constructor for the common case.
We still need the new_idx variant because the way groups are handled,
with evsel->nr_members holding the number of entries in an evlist,
partitioning the evlist into sublists inside a single linked list.
This asks for a clarifying refactoring, but for now simplify the non
parser cases, so that tool writers don't have to bother with evsel idx
setting.

perf-record updates the header in the perf.data file at termination.
Without this update perf-report (and other processing built-ins) it
caused an infinite loop when perf report (or something like) called.
This is because the algorithm in __perf_session__process_events()
depends on the data_size which is read from file header. Use file size
directly instead in this case to do the best-effort processing.

When kallsyms is used with kcore the dso long_name becomes the kcore
file name. That prevents the buildid cache from caching kallsyms.
(There is no support at present for caching kcore). Fix by changing it
so that the kallsyms name is used in that case instead.

This patch adds support for the new PERF_RECORD_MMAP2 record type
exposed by the kernel. This is an extended PERF_RECORD_MMAP record.
It adds for each file-backed mapping the device major, minor number and
the inode number and generation.
This triplet uniquely identifies the source of a file-backed mapping. It
can be used to detect identical virtual mappings between processes, for
instance.
The patch will prefer MMAP2 over MMAP.

This patch improves the robustness of the build_cpu_topo() routine by
allowing either the CPU parsing or the thread parsing to fail and yet
get perf to produce some topology data which could be useful for the
analysis.
Without this patch, if the cpu parsing fails, the thread parsing is not
attempted vice-versa.

Removing event types framework completely. The only remainder (apart

Removing event types data storing/reading to/from perf data file as it's
no longer needed. The only user of this data 'perf timechart' was
switched to use tracepoints handler callbacks.
The event_types offset and size stay in the perf data file header but
are ignored from now on.

If pevent allocation in read_trace_init() fails, trace_report() will
return -1 and *ppevent is set to NULL. Its callers should check this
case and handle it properly.
This is also a preparation for the removal of *die() calls.

A sweep of the kernel for regex "kcalloc(sizeof" turned up 2 reversed
args, fixed in commit d3d09e1820 ("EDAC:
Fix kcalloc argument order") and also fixed in the networking commit
a1b1add07f ("gro: Fix kcalloc argument
order").
I know that was the regex used, because on seeing the 1st of these
changes, I wondered "how many other instances of this are there" and I
happened to just use "calloc(sizeof" as a regex and it in turn found
these additional reversed args instances in the perf code.
In the kcalloc cases, the changes are cosmetic, since the numbers are
simply multiplied. I had no desire to go data mining in userspace to
see if the same thing held true there, however.

That consolidates the grouping of host + guests, isolating a bit more of
functionality now centered on 'perf_session' that can be used
independently in tools that don't need a 'perf_session' instance, but

With this function, other modules can basically check whether a file is
a legal perf data file by checking its first 8 bytes against all
possible perf magic numbers.
Change the function name from check_perf_magic to more meaningful
is_perf_magic as suggested by acme.

Add 'perf kvm stat' support to analyze kvm vmexit/mmio/ioport smartly
Usage:
- kvm stat
run a command and gather performance counter statistics, it is the alias of
perf stat
- trace kvm events:
perf kvm stat record, or, if other tracepoints are interesting as well, we
can append the events like this:
perf kvm stat record -e timer:* -a
If many guests are running, we can track the specified guest by using -p or
--pid, -a is used to track events generated by all guests.
- show the result:
perf kvm stat report

perf defines both __used and __unused variables to use for marking
unused variables. The variable __used is defined to
__attribute__((__unused__)), which contradicts the kernel definition to
__attribute__((__used__)) for new gcc versions. On Android, __used is
also defined in system headers and this leads to warnings like: warning:
'__used__' attribute ignored
__unused is not defined in the kernel and is not a standard definition.
If __unused is included everywhere instead of __used, this leads to
conflicts with glibc headers, since glibc has a variables with this name
in its headers.
The best approach is to use __maybe_unused, the definition used in the
kernel for __attribute__((unused)). In this way there is only one
definition in perf sources (instead of 2 definitions that point to the
same thing: __used and __unused) and it works on both Linux and Android.
This patch simply replaces all instances of __used and __unused with
__maybe_unused.

Storing data for VDSO shared object, because we need it for the post
unwind processing.
The VDSO shared object is same for all process on a running system, so
it makes no difference when we store it inside the tracer - perf.
When [vdso] map memory is hit, we retrieve [vdso] DSO image and store it
into temporary file.
During the build-id processing phase, the [vdso] DSO image is stored in
build-id db, and build-id reference is made inside perf.data. The
build-id vdso file object is called '[vdso]'. We don't use temporary
file name which gets removed when record is finished.
During report phase the vdso build-id object is treated as any other
build-id DSO object.
Adding following API for vdso object:
bool is_vdso_map(const char *filename)
- returns true if the filename matches vdso map name
struct dso *vdso__dso_findnew(struct list_head *head)
- find/create proper vdso DSO object
vdso__exit(void)
- removes temporary VDSO image if there's any
This change makes backtrace dwarf post unwind possible from [vdso] maps.

Current perf_evlist__set_tracepoint_names is a misnomer because it finds
and sets correspoding event_format in addition to the name. So skipping
it when a event has set name already caused a trouble.
Rename it and set name only a event doesn't have one.

With dynamic pmu allocation there are also dynamically assigned pmu ids.
These ids are used in event->attr.type to describe the pmu to be used
for that event. The information is available in sysfs, e.g:
/sys/bus/event_source/devices/breakpoint/type: 5
/sys/bus/event_source/devices/cpu/type: 4
/sys/bus/event_source/devices/ibs_fetch/type: 6
/sys/bus/event_source/devices/ibs_op/type: 7
/sys/bus/event_source/devices/software/type: 1
/sys/bus/event_source/devices/tracepoint/type: 2
These mappings are needed to know which samples belong to which pmu. If
a pmu is added dynamically like for ibs_fetch or ibs_op the type value
may vary.
Now, when decoding samples from perf.data this information in sysfs
might be no longer available or may have changed. We need to store it in
perf.data. Using the header for this. Now the header information created
with perf report contains an additional section looking like this:
# pmu mappings: ibs_op = 7, ibs_fetch = 6, cpu = 4, breakpoint = 5, tracepoint = 2, software = 1

Use same type for ids everywhere.
In case of writing to perf.data the size is u32. In pipe mode it is
limited to header.size (less than u16). Adding a size check here.
Size overflow due to casting shouldn't actually happen in practice, but
during development this may cause type missmatch warninngs/errors,
unifying types avoids this.

Both are global and specific to all events within the session.
This info will be used in the unwind patches coming in shortly.

We already lookup the associated event_format when reading the perf.data
header, so that we can cache the tracepoint name in evsel->name, so do
it a little further and save the event_format itself, so that we can
avoid relookups in tools that need to access it.
Change the tools to take the most obvious advantage, when they were
using pevent_find_event directly. More work is needed for further
removing the need of a pointer to pevent, such as when asking for event
field values ("common_pid" and the other common fields and per
event_format fields).
This is something that was planned but only got actually done when
Andrey Wagin needed to do this lookup at perf_tool->sample() time, when
we don't have access to pevent (session->pevent) to use with
pevent_find_event().

We only have access to pevent after processing that event, so set the
tracepoint names there.
Right now this isn't a problem as we're deferring resolving the
tracepoint names to when we process samples, but in the next patches we
will be doing it in advance, to avoid relookups, so do it earlier, as
soon as we process the tracing data event.

A number of builtin commands process some user args and then pass the rest to
cmd_record. cmd_record then saves argc/argv that it receives into the header of
the perf data file. But this loses the arguments handled by the first command
-- ie., the real command line from the user. This patch saves the command line
as typed by the user rather than what was passed to cmd_record.
As an example consider the command:
$ perf kvm --guest --host --guestmount=/tmp/guest-mount record
-fo /tmp/perf.data -ag -- sleep 10
Currently the command saved to the header is:
cmdline : /tmp/p3.5/perf record -o perf.data.kvm -fo /tmp/perf.data -ag -- sleep 1
(ignore the duplicated -o -- the first would be yet another bug with perf-kvm).
With this patch the command line saved to the header is:
cmdline : /tmp/p3.5/perf kvm --guest --host --guestmount=/tmp/guest-mount
record -fo /tmp/perf.data -ag -- sleep 1

The pevent thing is per perf.data file, so I made it stop being static
and become a perf_session member, so tools processing perf.data files
use perf_session and _there_ we read the trace events description into
session->pevent and then change everywhere to stop using that single
global pevent variable and use the per session one.
Note that it _doesn't_ fall backs to trace__event_id, as we're not
interested at all in what is present in the
/sys/kernel/debug/tracing/events in the workstation doing the analysis,
just in what is in the perf.data file.
This patch also introduces perf_session__set_tracepoints_handlers that
is the perf perf.data/session way to associate handlers to tracepoint
events by resolving their IDs using the events descriptions stored in a
perf.data file. Make 'perf sched' use it.

We need to use the per event info snapshoted at record time to
synthesize the events name, so do it just after reading the perf.data
headers, when we already processed the /sys events data, otherwise we'll
end up using the local /sys that only by sheer luck will have the same
tracepoint ID -> real event association.
Example:

Several places were expecting that the value returned was the number of
characters printed, not what would be printed if there was space.
Fix it by using the scnprintf and vscnprintf variants we inherited from
the kernel sources.
Some corner cases where the number of printed characters were not
accounted were fixed too.
