ACPI and power management updates for 3.19-rc1
This time we have some more new material than we used to have during the last couple of development cycles. The most important part of it to me is the introduction of a unified interface for accessing device properties provided by platform firmware. It works with Device Trees and ACPI in a uniform way and drivers using it need not worry about where the properties come from as long as the platform firmware (either DT or ACPI) makes them available. It covers both devices and "bare" device node objects without struct device representation as that turns out to be necessary in some cases. This has been in the works for quite a few months (and development cycles) and has been approved by all of the relevant maintainers. On top of that, some drivers are switched over to the new interface (at25, leds-gpio, gpio_keys_polled) and some additional changes are made to the core GPIO subsystem to allow device drivers to manipulate GPIOs in the "canonical" way on platforms that provide GPIO information in their ACPI tables, but don't assign names to GPIO lines (in which case the driver needs to do that on the basis of what it knows about the device in question). That also has been approved by the GPIO core maintainers and the rfkill driver is now going to use it. Second is support for hardware P-states in the intel_pstate driver. It uses CPUID to detect whether or not the feature is supported by the processor in which case it will be enabled by default. However, it can be disabled entirely from the kernel command line if necessary. Next is support for a platform firmware interface based on ACPI operation regions used by the PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuit) chips on the Intel Baytrail-T and Baytrail-T-CR platforms. That interface is used for manipulating power resources and for thermal management: sensor temperature reporting, trip point setting and so on. Also the ACPI core is now going to support the _DEP configuration information in a limited way. Basically, _DEP it supposed to reflect off-the-hierarchy dependencies between devices which may be very indirect, like when AML for one device accesses locations in an operation region handled by another device's driver (usually, the device depended on this way is a serial bus or GPIO controller). The support added this time is sufficient to make the ACPI battery driver work on Asus T100A, but it is general enough to be able to cover some other use cases in the future. Finally, we have a new cpufreq driver for the Loongson1B processor. In addition to the above, there are fixes and cleanups all over the place as usual and a traditional ACPICA update to a recent upstream release. As far as the fixes go, the ACPI LPSS (Low-power Subsystem) driver for Intel platforms should be able to handle power management of the DMA engine correctly, the cpufreq-dt driver should interact with the thermal subsystem in a better way and the ACPI backlight driver should handle some more corner cases, among other things. On top of the ACPICA update there are fixes for race conditions in the ACPICA's interrupt handling code which might lead to some random and strange looking failures on some systems. In the cleanups department the most visible part is the series of commits targeted at getting rid of the CONFIG_PM_RUNTIME configuration option. That was triggered by a discussion regarding the generic power domains code during which we realized that trying to support certain combinations of PM config options was painful and not really worth it, because nobody would use them in production anyway. For this reason, we decided to make CONFIG_PM_SLEEP select CONFIG_PM_RUNTIME and that lead to the conclusion that the latter became redundant and CONFIG_PM could be used instead of it. The material here makes that replacement in a major part of the tree, but there will be at least one more batch of that in the second part of the merge window. Specifics: - Support for retrieving device properties information from ACPI _DSD device configuration objects and a unified device properties interface for device drivers (and subsystems) on top of that. As stated above, this works with Device Trees and ACPI and allows device drivers to be written in a platform firmware (DT or ACPI) agnostic way. The at25, leds-gpio and gpio_keys_polled drivers are now going to use this new interface and the GPIO subsystem is additionally modified to allow device drivers to assign names to GPIO resources returned by ACPI _CRS objects (in case _DSD is not present or does not provide the expected data). The changes in this set are mostly from Mika Westerberg, Rafael J Wysocki, Aaron Lu, and Darren Hart with some fixes from others (Fabio Estevam, Geert Uytterhoeven). - Support for Hardware Managed Performance States (HWP) as described in Volume 3, section 14.4, of the Intel SDM in the intel_pstate driver. CPUID is used to detect whether or not the feature is supported by the processor. If supported, it will be enabled automatically unless the intel_pstate=no_hwp switch is present in the kernel command line. From Dirk Brandewie. - New Intel Broadwell-H ID for intel_pstate (Dirk Brandewie). - Support for firmware interface based on ACPI operation regions used by the PMIC chips on the Intel Baytrail-T and Baytrail-T-CR platforms for power resource control and thermal management (Aaron Lu). - Limited support for retrieving off-the-hierarchy dependencies between devices from ACPI _DEP device configuration objects and deferred probing support for the ACPI battery driver based on the _DEP information to make that driver work on Asus T100A (Lan Tianyu). - New cpufreq driver for the Loongson1B processor (Kelvin Cheung). - ACPICA update to upstream revision 20141107 which only affects tools (Bob Moore). - Fixes for race conditions in the ACPICA's interrupt handling code and in the ACPI code related to system suspend and resume (Lv Zheng and Rafael J Wysocki). - ACPI core fix for an RCU-related issue in the ioremap() regions management code that slowed down significantly after CPUs had been allowed to enter idle states even if they'd had RCU callbakcs queued and triggered some problems in certain proprietary graphics driver (and elsewhere). The fix replaces synchronize_rcu() in that code with synchronize_rcu_expedited() which makes the issue go away. From Konstantin Khlebnikov. - ACPI LPSS (Low-Power Subsystem) driver fix to handle power management of the DMA engine included into the LPSS correctly. The problem is that the DMA engine doesn't have ACPI PM support of its own and it simply is turned off when the last LPSS device having ACPI PM support goes into D3cold. To work around that, the PM domain used by the ACPI LPSS driver is redesigned so at least one device with ACPI PM support will be on as long as the DMA engine is in use. From Andy Shevchenko. - ACPI backlight driver fix to avoid using it on "Win8-compatible" systems where it doesn't work and where it was used by default by mistake (Aaron Lu). - Assorted minor ACPI core fixes and cleanups from Tomasz Nowicki, Sudeep Holla, Huang Rui, Hanjun Guo, Fabian Frederick, and Ashwin Chaugule (mostly related to the upcoming ARM64 support). - Intel RAPL (Running Average Power Limit) power capping driver fixes and improvements including new processor IDs (Jacob Pan). - Generic power domains modification to power up domains after attaching devices to them to meet the expectations of device drivers and bus types assuming devices to be accessible at probe time (Ulf Hansson). - Preliminary support for controlling device clocks from the generic power domains core code and modifications of the ARM/shmobile platform to use that feature (Ulf Hansson). - Assorted minor fixes and cleanups of the generic power domains core code (Ulf Hansson, Geert Uytterhoeven). - Assorted minor fixes and cleanups of the device clocks control code in the PM core (Geert Uytterhoeven, Grygorii Strashko). - Consolidation of device power management Kconfig options by making CONFIG_PM_SLEEP select CONFIG_PM_RUNTIME and removing the latter which is now redundant (Rafael J Wysocki and Kevin Hilman). That is the first batch of the changes needed for this purpose. - Core device runtime power management support code cleanup related to the execution of callbacks (Andrzej Hajda). - cpuidle ARM support improvements (Lorenzo Pieralisi). - cpuidle cleanup related to the CPUIDLE_FLAG_TIME_VALID flag and a new MAINTAINERS entry for ARM Exynos cpuidle (Daniel Lezcano and Bartlomiej Zolnierkiewicz). - New cpufreq driver callback (->ready) to be executed when the cpufreq core is ready to use a given policy object and cpufreq-dt driver modification to use that callback for cooling device registration (Viresh Kumar). - cpufreq core fixes and cleanups (Viresh Kumar, Vince Hsu, James Geboski, Tomeu Vizoso). - Assorted fixes and cleanups in the cpufreq-pcc, intel_pstate, cpufreq-dt, pxa2xx cpufreq drivers (Lenny Szubowicz, Ethan Zhao, Stefan Wahren, Petr Cvek). - OPP (Operating Performance Points) framework modification to allow OPPs to be removed too and update of a few cpufreq drivers (cpufreq-dt, exynos5440, imx6q, cpufreq) to remove OPPs (added during initialization) on driver removal (Viresh Kumar). - Hibernation core fixes and cleanups (Tina Ruchandani and Markus Elfring). - PM Kconfig fix related to CPU power management (Pankaj Dubey). - cpupower tool fix (Prarit Bhargava). / -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.22 (GNU/Linux) iQIcBAABCAAGBQJUhj6JAAoJEILEb/54YlRxTM4P/j5g5SfqvY0QKsn7sR7MGZ6v nsgCBhJAqTw3ocNC7EAs8z9h2GWy1KbKpakKYWAh9Fs1yZoey7tFSlcv/Rgjlp70 uU5sDQHtpE9mHKiymdsowiQuWgpl962L4k+k8hUslhlvgk1PvVbpajR6OqG8G+pD asuIW9eh1APNkLyXmRJ3ZPomzs0VmRdZJ0NEs0lKX9mJskqEvxPIwdaxq3iaJq9B Fo0J345zUDcJnxWblDRdHlOigCimglElfN5qJwaC4KpwUKuBvLRKbp4f69+wfT0c kYFiR29X5KjJ2kLfP/wKsLyuDCYYXRq3tCia5M1tAqOjZ+UA89H/GDftx/5lntmv qUlBa35VfdS1SX4HyApZitOHiLgo+It/hl8Z9bJnhyVw66NxmMQ8JYN2imb8Lhqh XCLR7BxLTah82AapLJuQ0ZDHPzZqMPG2veC2vAzRMYzVijict/p4Y2+qBqONltER 4rs9uRVn+hamX33lCLg8BEN8zqlnT3rJFIgGaKjq/wXHAU/zpE9CjOrKMQcAg9+s t51XMNPwypHMAYyGVhEL89ImjXnXxBkLRuquhlmEpvQchIhR+mR3dLsarGn7da44 WPIQJXzcsojXczcwwfqsJCR4I1FTFyQIW+UNh02GkDRgRovQqo+Jk762U7vQwqH+ LBdhvVaS1VW4v+FWXEoZ =5dox -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'pm+acpi-3.19-rc1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rafael/linux-pm Pull ACPI and power management updates from Rafael Wysocki: "This time we have some more new material than we used to have during the last couple of development cycles. It is not valid to select CONFIG_PM directly without selecting CONFIG_PM_SLEEP or CONFIG_PM_RUNTIME too, because that breaks dependencies (ia64 does that) and it is not necessary to select CONFIG_PM directly if CONFIG_PM_SLEEP or CONFIG_PM_RUNTIME is selected, because CONFIG_PM will be set automatically in that case (sh does that). Fix those mistakes. Acked-by: Geert Uytterhoeven <geert+renesas@glider.be> Reviewed-by: Kevin Hilman <khilman@linaro.org> Signed-off-by: Rafael J. Wysocki <rafael.j.wysocki@intel.com> |

cpuidle: Invert CPUIDLE_FLAG_TIME_VALID logic
The only place where the time is invalid is when the ACPI_CSTATE_FFH entry method is not set. Otherwise for all the drivers, the time can be correctly measured. Instead of duplicating the CPUIDLE_FLAG_TIME_VALID flag in all the drivers for all the states, just invert the logic by replacing it by the flag CPUIDLE_FLAG_TIME_INVALID, hence we can set this flag only for the acpi idle driver, remove the former flag from all the drivers and invert the logic with this flag in the different governor. Merge git://git.infradead.org/users/eparis/audit
Pull audit updates from Eric Paris: "So this change across a whole bunch of arches really solves one basic problem. We want to audit when seccomp is killing a process. seccomp hooks in before the audit syscall entry code. audit_syscall_entry took as an argument the arch of the given syscall. Since the arch is part of what makes a syscall number meaningful it's an important part of the record, but it isn't available when seccomp shoots the syscall... For most arch's we have a better way to get the arch (syscall_get_arch) So the solution was two fold: Implement syscall_get_arch() everywhere there is audit which didn't have it. Use syscall_get_arch() in the seccomp audit code. Having syscall_get_arch() everywhere meant it was a useless flag on the stack and we could get rid of it for the typical syscall entry. The other changes inside the audit system aren't grand, fixed some records that had invalid spaces. Better locking around the task comm field. Removing some dead functions and structs. This is the bulk of GPIO changes for the v3.18 development
cycle: - Increase the default ARCH_NR_GPIO from 256 to 512. This was done to avoid having a custom <asm/gpio.h> header for the x86 architecture - GPIO is custom and complicated enough as it is already! We want to move to a radix to store the descriptors going forward, and finally get rid of this fixed array size altogether. - Endgame patching of the gpio_remove() semantics initiated by Abdoulaye Berthe. It is not accepted by the system that the removal of a GPIO chip fails during e.g. reboot or shutdown, and therefore the return value has now painfully been refactored away. For special cases like GPIO expanders on a hot-pluggable bus like USB, we may later add some gpiochip_try_remove() call, but for the cases we have now, return values are moot. - Some incremental refactoring of the gpiolib core and ACPI GPIO library for more descriptor usage. - Refactor the chained IRQ handler set-up method to handle also threaded, nested interrupts and set up the parent IRQ correctly. Switch STMPE and TC3589x drivers to use this registration method. - Add a .irq_not_threaded flag to the struct gpio_chip, so that also GPIO expanders that block but are still not using threaded IRQ handlers. - New drivers for the ARM64 X-Gene SoC GPIO controller. - The syscon GPIO driver has been improved to handle the "DSP GPIO" found on the TI Keystone 2 SoC:s. - ADNP driver switched to use gpiolib irqchip helpers. - Refactor the DWAPB driver to support being instantiated from and MFD cell (platform device). - Incremental feature improvement in the Zynq, MCP23S08, DWAPB, OMAP, Xilinx and Crystalcove drivers. - Various minor fixes. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1 iQIcBAABAgAGBQJUNOr0AAoJEEEQszewGV1z9toP/2ISXRnsi3+jlqVmEGm/y6EA PPwJOiYnOhZR2/fTCHIF0PNbIi9pw7xKnzxttYCu4uCz7geHX+FfTwUZ2/KWMfqi ZJ9kEoOVVKzKjmL/m2a2tO4IRSBHqJ8dF3yvaNjS3AL7EDfG6F5STErQurdLEynK SeJZ2OwM/vRFCac6F7oDlqAUTu3xYGbVD8+zI0H0V/ReocosFlEwcbl2S8ctDWUd h98M+gY+A8rxkvVMnmQ/k7rUTme/glDQ3z5xVx+uHbS2/a5M1jSM/71cXE6YnSrR it0CK7CHomq2RzHsKf7oH7GD4kFkukMwFKeMoqz75JWz3352VZPTF53chCIqRSgO hrgGwZ7WF6pUUUhsn1ZdZsnBPA2Fou2uwslyLSAiE+OYEH2/NSVIOUcorjQcWqU/ 0Kix5yb8X1ZzRMhR+TVrTD5V0jguqp2buXq+0P2XlU6MoO2vy7iNf2eXvPg8sF8C anjTCKgmkzy7eyT2uzfDaNZAyfSBKb1TiKiR9zA0SRChJkCi1ErJEXDGeHiptvSA +D2k68Ils2LqsvdrnEd2XvVFMllh0iq7b+16o7D+Els0WRbnHpfYCaqfOuF5F4U0 SmeyI0ruawNDc5e9EBKXstt0/R9AMOetyTcTu29U2ZVo90zGaT1ofT8+R1jJ0kGa bPARJZrgecgv1E9Qnnnd =8InA -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'gpio-v3.18-1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/linusw/linux-gpio Pull GPIO changes from Linus Walleij: "This is the bulk of GPIO changes for the v3.18 development cycle: - Increase the default ARCH_NR_GPIO from 256 to 512. SH: define syscall_get_arch() for superh
This patch defines syscall_get_arch() for the superh platform. It does so in both syscall_32.h and syscall_64.h. I'm not certain if the implementation in syscall_64.h couldn't just be used in syscall.h as I can't really track the setting of CONFIG_64BIT... This way is safe, but we might be able to combine these if a superh person were able to review... sh: get_user_pages_fast() must flush cache
This patch avoids fuse hangs on sh4 by flushing the cache on get_user_pages_fast(). This is not necessary a good thing to do, but get_user_pages() does this, so get_user_pages_fast() should too. Please note the patch for mips arch that addresses the similar problem: https://kernel.googlesource.com/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ralf/linux/+/linux-3.4.50%5E!/#F0 They basically simply disable get_user_pages_fast() at all, using a fall-back to get_user_pages(). Pull arch signal handling cleanup from Richard Weinberger: "This patch series moves all remaining archs to the get_signal(), signal_setup_done() and sigsp() functions. kexec: load and relocate purgatory at kernel load time
Load purgatory code in RAM and relocate it based on the location. Relocation code has been inspired by module relocation code and purgatory relocation code in kexec-tools. Also compute the checksums of loaded kexec segments and store them in purgatory. Arch independent code provides this functionality so that arch dependent bootloaders can make use of it. Helper functions are provided to get/set symbol values in purgatory which are used by bootloaders later to set things like stack and entry point of second kernel etc. Signed-off-by: Vivek Goyal <vgoyal@redhat.com> Cc: Borislav Petkov <bp@suse.de> Cc: Michael Kerrisk <mtk.manpages@gmail.com> Cc: Yinghai Lu <yinghai@kernel.org> Cc: Eric Biederman <ebiederm@xmission.com> Cc: H. arm64,ia64,ppc,s390,sh,tile,um,x86,mm: remove default gate area
The core mm code will provide a default gate area based on FIXADDR_USER_START and FIXADDR_USER_END if !defined(__HAVE_ARCH_GATE_AREA) && defined(AT_SYSINFO_EHDR). This default is only useful for ia64. arm64, ppc, s390, sh, tile, 64-bit UML, and x86_32 have their own code just to disable it. arm, 32-bit UML, and x86_64 have gate areas, but they have their own implementations. This gets rid of the default and moves the code into ia64. This should save some code on architectures without a gate area: it's now possible to inline the gate_area functions in the default case. This patch set consists of the usual driver updates (ufs, storvsc, pm8001 hpsa). It also has removal of the user space target driver code (everyone is using LIO now), a partial PCI MSI-X update, more multi-queue updates, conversion to 64 bit LUNs (so we could theoretically cope with any LUN returned by a device) and placeholder support for the ZBC device type (Shingle drives), plus an assortment of minor updates and bug fixes. sound updates for 3.17-rc1
There've been many updates in ASoC side at this time, especially the framework enhancement for multiple CODECs on a single DAI and more componentization works. The only major change in ALSA core is the addition of timestamp type in sw_params field. This should behave in backward compatible way. Other than that, there are lots of small changes and new drivers in wide range, including a large code cut in HD-audio driver for deprecated static quirks. Some highlights are below: ALSA Core: - Add the new timestamp type field to sw_params to choose MONOTONIC_RAW type HD-audio: - Continued conversion to standard printk macros, generic code cleanups - Removal of obsoleted static quirk codes for Conexant and C-Media codecs - Fixups for HP Envy TS, Dell XPS 15, HP and Dell mute/mic LED, Gigabyte BXBT-2807 mobo - Intel Braswell support ASoC: - Support for multiple CODECs attached to a single DAI, enabling systems with for example multiple DAC/speaker drivers on a single link, contributed by Benoit Cousson based on work from Misael Lopez Cruz - Support for byte controls larger than 256 bytes based on the use of TLVs contributed by Omair Mohammed Abdullah - More componentisation work from Lars-Peter Clausen - The remainder of the conversions of CODEC drivers to params_width() by Mark Brown - Drivers for Cirrus Logic CS4265, Freescale i.MX ASRC blocks, Realtek RT286 and RT5670, Rockchip RK3xxx I2S controllers and Texas Instruments TAS2552 - Lots of updates and fixes, especially to the DaVinci, Intel, Freescale, Realtek, and rcar drivers -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2 iQIcBAABAgAGBQJT4fj0AAoJEGwxgFQ9KSmkXQ0QAIiRmVg40aiJoEdOLGgzNZtq r/nXj69AuB6JSy0hKbFyyijjCcRpyCCGvjDYlogjT75M3c35Npz/m85oZHx2tajD SB5OA+QxO4EQ3C0GjITIRHJROm4MM8/rnbnNYTsWnEGRkobTFTl0rHbSkA85RGFt 0zZqqs1R0s/nO9PMQ+5PA5x9xVFiZs2COeCK0CFA9s2ACf/hbxJBRIqYpIFWOo78 9L41jBOFuC/hIb4qwjgmsCWbKe1KQysTAf+Wty0CKipJ6VhfCbPn1Qn1zXGeUOxc mj4eZ6LpJTrVMr/UN02c5vgPOiaBrQ7fWZo3dVHLlIjC6cEI1tUvNYAin7CMEzx8 DUsvo9p30OheA+ijc9wKaYFY6YmmJZRtpnnMd39i0oPG+bhvoV7vjXjJSB1sLJt1 o82xLpVL4Th8H+DMDVwA7UIBvvZGZBusw1qsNGfcOPrmExi4ScGhA0gSOO6W2y1z VQLRbiXB/HtJGxeqWL6RqJOcLBOlJNmsk4UZMOSCu2OZrWd5I8MuRrNWeHDqhX1H +VDEJVhFmM21vMpnobzEPxWsMgTVIAVf3Thh+WgaPxL4Krh0vkpZsgZk16VVmy/o OJJF3n41FND4n9zSjOe4MkuL8UCOUpKCaBdqj9K1s6UKwOEKuDNslyT/zqutRWK5 x1uApU5y+E4iQT/b7cmA =RL72 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'sound-3.17-rc1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tiwai/sound Pull sound updates from Takashi Iwai: "There've been many updates in ASoC side at this time, especially the framework enhancement for multiple CODECs on a single DAI and more componentization works. This pull request has a lot of work done. The main thing is the changes
to the ftrace function callback infrastructure. It's introducing a way to allow different functions to call directly different trampolines instead of all calling the same "mcount" one. The only user of this for now is the function graph tracer, which always had a different trampoline, but the function tracer trampoline was called and did basically nothing, and then the function graph tracer trampoline was called. The difference now, is that the function graph tracer trampoline can be called directly if a function is only being traced by the function graph trampoline. If function tracing is also happening on the same function, the old way is still done. The accounting for this takes up more memory when function graph tracing is activated, as it needs to keep track of which functions it uses. I have a new way that wont take as much memory, but it's not ready yet for this merge window, and will have to wait for the next one. Another big change was the removal of the ftrace_start/stop() calls that were used by the suspend/resume code that stopped function tracing when entering into suspend and resume paths. The stop of ftrace was done because there was some function that would crash the system if one called smp_processor_id()! The stop/start was a big hammer to solve the issue at the time, which was when ftrace was first introduced into Linux. The main thing is the changes to the ftrace function callback infrastructure. Now ftrace has better infrastructure to debug such issues, and I found the problem function and labeled it with "notrace" and function tracing can now safely be activated all the way down into the guts of suspend and resume Other changes include clean ups of uprobe code, clean up of the trace_seq() code, and other various small fixes and clean ups to ftrace and tracing" * tag 'trace-3.17' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rostedt/linux-trace: (57 commits) ftrace: Add warning if tramp hash does not match nr_trampolines ftrace: Fix trampoline hash update check on rec->flags ring-buffer: Use rb_page_size() instead of open coded head_page size ftrace: Rename ftrace_ops field from trampolines to nr_trampolines tracing: Convert local function_graph functions to static ftrace: Do not copy old hash when resetting tracing: let user specify tracing_thresh after selecting function_graph ring-buffer: Always run per-cpu ring buffer resize with schedule_work_on() tracing: Remove function_trace_stop and HAVE_FUNCTION_TRACE_MCOUNT_TEST s390/ftrace: remove check of obsolete variable function_trace_stop arm64, ftrace: Remove check of obsolete variable function_trace_stop Blackfin: ftrace: Remove check of obsolete variable function_trace_stop metag: ftrace: Remove check of obsolete variable function_trace_stop microblaze: ftrace: Remove check of obsolete variable function_trace_stop MIPS: ftrace: Remove check of obsolete variable function_trace_stop parisc: ftrace: Remove check of obsolete variable function_trace_stop sh: ftrace: Remove check of obsolete variable function_trace_stop sparc64,ftrace: Remove check of obsolete variable function_trace_stop tile: ftrace: Remove check of obsolete variable function_trace_stop ftrace: x86: Remove check of obsolete variable function_trace_stop ... |

sh: also try passing -m4-nofpu for SH2A builds
When compiling a SH2A kernel (e.g. se7206_defconfig or rsk7203_defconfig) using sh4-linux-gcc, linking fails with: net/built-in.o: In function `__sk_run_filter': net/core/filter.c:566: undefined reference to `__fpscr_values' net/core/filter.c:269: undefined reference to `__fpscr_values' ... net/built-in.o:net/core/filter.c:580: more undefined references to `__fpscr_values' follow This happens because sh4-linux-gcc doesn't support the "-m2a-nofpu", which is thus filtered out by "$(call cc-option, ...)". As compiling using sh4-linux-gcc is useful for compile coverage, also try passing "-m4-nofpu" (which is presumably filtered out when using a real sh2a-linux toolchain) to disable the generation of FPU instructions and references to __fpscr_values[]. ftrace_stop() is going away as it disables parts of function tracing that affects users that should not be affected. But ftrace_graph_stop() is built on ftrace_stop(). Here's another example of killing all of function tracing because something went wrong with function graph tracing. Instead of disabling all users of function tracing on function graph error, disable only function graph tracing. To do this, the arch code must call ftrace_graph_is_dead() before it implements function graph. Cc: Paul Mundt <lethal@linux-sh.org> Signed-off-by: Steven Rostedt <rostedt@goodmis.org> |

sh: Replace __get_cpu_var uses
__get_cpu_var() is used for multiple purposes in the kernel source. One of them is address calculation via the form &__get_cpu_var(x). This calculates the address for the instance of the percpu variable of the current processor based on an offset. Other use cases are for storing and retrieving data from the current processors percpu area. __get_cpu_var() can be used as an lvalue when writing data or on the right side of an assignment. __get_cpu_var() is defined as : #define __get_cpu_var(var) (*this_cpu_ptr(&(var))) __get_cpu_var() always only does an address determination. However, store and retrieve operations could use a segment prefix (or global register on other platforms) to avoid the address calculation. this_cpu_write() and this_cpu_read() can directly take an offset into a percpu area and use optimized assembly code to read and write per cpu variables. This patch converts __get_cpu_var into either an explicit address calculation using this_cpu_ptr() or into a use of this_cpu operations that use the offset. Thereby address calculations are avoided and less registers are used when code is generated. At the end of the patch set all uses of __get_cpu_var have been removed so the macro is removed too. The patch set includes passes over all arches as well. Once these operations are used throughout then specialized macros can be defined in non -x86 arches as well in order to optimize per cpu access by f.e. using a global register that may be set to the per cpu base. Transformations done to __get_cpu_var() 1. Determine the address of the percpu instance of the current processor. DEFINE_PER_CPU(int, y); int *x = &__get_cpu_var(y); Converts to int *x = this_cpu_ptr(&y); 2. Same as #1 but this time an array structure is involved. DEFINE_PER_CPU(int, y[20]); int *x = __get_cpu_var(y); Converts to int *x = this_cpu_ptr(y); 3. Retrieve the content of the current processors instance of a per cpu variable. DEFINE_PER_CPU(int, y); int x = __get_cpu_var(y) Converts to int x = __this_cpu_read(y); 4. Retrieve the content of a percpu struct DEFINE_PER_CPU(struct mystruct, y); struct mystruct x = __get_cpu_var(y); Converts to memcpy(&x, this_cpu_ptr(&y), sizeof(x)); 5. Assignment to a per cpu variable DEFINE_PER_CPU(int, y) __get_cpu_var(y) = x; Converts to __this_cpu_write(y, x); 6. hugetlb: restrict hugepage_migration_support() to x86_64
Currently hugepage migration is available for all archs which support pmd-level hugepage, but testing is done only for x86_64 and there're bugs for other archs. So to avoid breaking such archs, this patch limits the availability strictly to x86_64 until developers of other archs get interested in enabling this feature. Simply disabling hugepage migration on non-x86_64 archs is not enough to fix the reported problem where sys_move_pages() hits the BUG_ON() in follow_page(FOLL_GET), so let's fix this by checking if hugepage migration is supported in vma_migratable(). USB driver patches for 3.16-rc1
Here is the big USB driver pull request for 3.16-rc1. Nothing huge here, but lots of little things in the USB core, and in lots of drivers. Hopefully the USB power management will be work better now that it has been reworked to do per-port power control dynamically. There's also a raft of gadget driver updates and fixes, CONFIG_USB_DEBUG is finally gone now that everything has been converted over to the dynamic debug inteface, the last hold-out drivers were cleaned up and the config option removed. There were also other minor things all through the drivers/usb/ tree, the shortlog shows this pretty well. ARM: SoC board support updates for 3.16
The bulk of this branch is updates for Renesas Shmobile. They are still doing some enablement for classic boards first, and then come up with DT bindings when they've had a chance to learn more about the hardware. pcibios_penalize_isa_irq() is only implemented by x86 now, and legacy ISA is not used by some architectures. Make pcibios_penalize_isa_irq() a __weak function to simplify the code. ftrace: Make CALLER_ADDRx macros more generic
Most archs with HAVE_ARCH_CALLER_ADDR have pretty much the same definitions of CALLER_ADDRx(n). Instead of duplicating the code for all the archs, define a ftrace_return_address0() and ftrace_return_address(n) that can be overwritten by the archs if they need to do something different. Instead of 7 macros in every arch, we now only have at most 2 (and actually only 1 as ftrace_return_address0() should be the same for all archs). The CALLER_ADDRx(n) will now be defined in linux/ftrace.h and use the ftrace_return_address*(n?) macros. This removes a lot of the duplicate code. sh/PCI: Pass GAPSPCI_DMA_BASE CPU & bus address to dma_declare_coherent_memory()
dma_declare_coherent_memory() needs both the CPU physical address and the bus address of the device memory. They are the same on this platform, but in general we should use pcibios_resource_to_bus() to account for any address translation done by the PCI host bridge. This makes no difference on Dreamcast, but is safer if the usage is copied to future drivers. mm: split 'tlb_flush_mmu()' into tlb flushing and memory freeing parts
The mmu-gather operation 'tlb_flush_mmu()' has done two things: the actual tlb flush operation, and the batched freeing of the pages that the TLB entries pointed at. This splits the operation into separate phases, so that the forced batched flushing done by zap_pte_range() can now do the actual TLB flush while still holding the page table lock, but delay the batched freeing of all the pages to after the lock has been dropped. This in turn allows us to avoid a race condition between set_page_dirty() (as called by zap_pte_range() when it finds a dirty shared memory pte) and page_mkclean(): because we now flush all the dirty page data from the TLB's while holding the pte lock, page_mkclean() will be held up walking the (recently cleaned) page tables until after the TLB entries have been flushed from all CPU's. Kconfig: rename HAS_IOPORT to HAS_IOPORT_MAP
If the renamed symbol is defined lib/iomap.c implements ioport_map and ioport_unmap and currently (nearly) all platforms define the port accessor functions outb/inb and friend unconditionally. So HAS_IOPORT_MAP is the better name for this. Consequently NO_IOPORT is renamed to NO_IOPORT_MAP. The motivation for this change is to reintroduce a symbol HAS_IOPORT that signals if outb/int et al are available. I will address that at least one merge window later though to keep surprises to a minimum and catch new introductions of (HAS|NO)_IOPORT. sh: don't pass saved userspace state to exception handlers
The compiler is permitted to generate code which overwrites the parameters to a function. If those parameters include the only saved copy we have of userspace's registers, we're in trouble. sh: push extra copy of r0-r2 for syscall parameters
When invoking syscall handlers on sh32, the saved userspace registers are at the top of the stack. This seems to have been intentional, as it is an easy way to pass r0, r1, ... to the handler as parameters 5, 6, ... It causes problems, however, because the compiler is allowed to generate code for a function which clobbers that function's own parameters. For example, gcc generates the following code for clone: <SyS_clone>: mov.l 8c020714 <SyS_clone+0xc>,r1 ! 8c020540 <do_fork> mov.l r7,@r15 mov r6,r7 jmp @r1 mov #0,r6 nop .word 0x0540 .word 0x8c02 The `mov.l r7,@r15` clobbers the saved value of r0 passed from userspace. For most system calls, this might not be a problem, because we'll be overwriting r0 with the return value anyway. But in the case of clone, copy_thread will need the original value of r0 if the CLONE_SETTLS flag was specified. The first patch in this series fixes this issue for system calls by pushing to the stack and extra copy of r0-r2 before invoking the handler. We discard this copy before restoring the userspace registers, so it is not a problem if they are clobbered. Exception handlers also receive the userspace register values in a similar manner, and may hit the same problem. The second patch removes the do_fpu_error handler, which looks susceptible to this problem and which, as far as I can tell, has not been used in some time. The third patch addresses other exception handlers. This patch (of 3): The userspace registers are stored at the top of the stack when the syscall handler is invoked, which allows r0-r2 to act as parameters 5-7. Parameters passed on the stack may be clobbered by the syscall handler. The solution is to push an extra copy of the registers which might be used as syscall parameters to the stack, so that the authoritative set of saved register values does not get clobbered. A few system call handlers are also updated to get the userspace registers using current_pt_regs() instead of from the stack. Most of the changes were largely clean ups, and some documentation.
But there were a few features that were added. Uprobes now work with event triggers and multi buffers. Uprobes have support under ftrace and perf. The big feature is that the function tracer can now be used within the multi buffer instances. That is, you can now trace some functions in one buffer, others in another buffer, all functions in a third buffer and so on. They are basically agnostic from each other. This only works for the function tracer and not for the function graph trace, although you can have the function graph tracer running in the top level buffer (or any tracer for that matter) and have different function tracing going on in the sub buffers. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1 iQEcBAABAgAGBQJTOthtAAoJEKQekfcNnQGu5c8H/Ana/U+0tmksp1dbHkRHsKSH +Fsv4Jeu8gf1NaFKHEhkUTcFtnzE6qAPV2VCrcJwXbhAhhwZm+LjrnWdoy3215S3 cQW4LftLEonh2cM36Cos74TulMEYN6XmL6dQZV+CILKQkDrWU4qJjQ64okXEkqrd 9iG3p/mSXyvJcmnyg61ALnMOhZDLsXY3djBhWBPhiTPGS6BRb9zh4Pmw6Zv0n2rJ U93Gt/3AQrv1ybu73dUxqP0abp60oXOiWoF/R2jcbKqIM+K9RPJX79unCV3jq3u9 f+6jMlB9PgAMqQj6ihJdwxKDDuzwyrVdEPnsgvl4jarCBCtVVwhKedBaKN/KS8k= =HdXY -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'trace-3.15' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rostedt/linux-trace Pull tracing updates from Steven Rostedt: "Most of the changes were largely clean ups, and some documentation. sound updates for 3.15-rc1
There have been lots of changes in ALSA core, HD-audio and ASoC, also most of PCI drivers touched by conversions of printks. All these resulted in a high volume and wide ranged patch sets in this release. Many changes are fairly trivial, but also lots of nice cleanups and refactors. There are a few new drivers, most notably, the Intel Haswell and Baytrail ASoC driver. Core changes: - A bit modernization; embed the device struct into snd_card struct, so that it may be referred from the beginning. A new snd_card_new() function is introduced for that, and all drivers have been converted. - Simplification in the device management code in ALSA core; now managed by a simple priority list instead - Converted many kernel messages to use the standard dev_err() & co; this would be the pretty visible difference, especially for HD-audio. HD-audio: - Conexant codecs use the auto-parser as default now; the old static code still remains in case of regressions. Some old quirks have been rewritten with the fixups for auto-parser. - C-Media codecs also use the auto-parser as default now, too. - A device struct is assigned to each HD-audio codec, and the formerly hwdep attributes are accessible over the codec sysfs, too. hwdep attributes still remain for compatibility. - Split the PCI-specific stuff for HD-audio controller into a separate module, ane make a helper module for the generic controller driver. This is a preliminary change for supporting Tegra HDMI controller in near future, which slipped from 3.15 merge. - Device-specific fixes: mute LED support for Lenovo Ideapad, mic LED fix for HP laptops, more ASUS subwoofer quirks, yet more Dell laptop headset quirks - Make the HD-audio codec response a bit more robust - A few improvements on Realtek ALC282 / 283 about the pop noises - A couple of Intel HDMI fixes ASoC: - Lots of cleanups for enumerations; refactored lots of error prone original codes to use more modern APIs - Elimination of the ASoC level wrappers for I2C and SPI moving us closer to converting to regmap completely and avoiding some randconfig hassle - Provide both manually and transparently locked DAPM APIs rather than a mix of the two fixing some concurrency issues - Start converting CODEC drivers to use separate bus interface drivers rather than having them all in one file helping avoid dependency issues - DPCM support for Intel Haswell and Bay Trail platforms, lots of fixes - Lots of work on improvements for simple-card, DaVinci and the Renesas rcar drivers. - New drivers for Analog Devices ADAU1977, TI PCM512x and parts of the CSR SiRF SoC, TLV320AIC31XXX, Armada 370 DB, Cirrus cs42xx8 - Fixes for the simple-card DAI format DT mess - DT support for a couple more devices. - Use of the tdm_slot mapping in a few drivers Others: - Support of reset_resume callback for improved S4 in USB-audio driver; the device with boot quirks have been little tested, which we need to watch out in this development cycle - Add PM support for ICE1712 driver (finally!); it's still pretty partial support, only for M-Audio devices -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.22 (GNU/Linux) iQIcBAABAgAGBQJTOpQ/AAoJEGwxgFQ9KSmkTccP/RUxO1Coysvm+N+NUOtzvIgR O++rMDpsFhBSRtB4YvaxAGWRnI629QBc8YSpebxX+KqrGyDe856abgMHydzXJ6hd sM6//oaaZ8i0uXXzJza0/HXwIWHup9QcPVyFC4vAQq5mv6OCrH+Pvu7EXc0XbKh7 7B0ic28+AGPJTqV3sOx48AVzMvNnzPsKGriTWRUJ8Q6QnFqYrO0v6K9IH8/4pftg 2cihkA4JcIMNtoTSC/kSB3mXBvAX0ZFKQ2Juj1ukZxtXzaYmt9/ZLYPC+EM5OZrH Bo4pXrpja38QlFBXYBbxXYWqCXQp+B7CPl8sNXF2rDaRhX8qcFrOP05uqV4wR5HW AtCZjmhdvcYCbdUOv+Eck/HesRQMlIRKZN6/NAQBBN/WwrMMD1DmCODBke4uyg3+ Akb3yMQ0wXq/iSWRY0t5ejNGz9TV7V4NR1QoJS8+fgDnj1oP5sOAfr/BgZBcUIZ/ np8F77lTqqPqj9kPQnMRBEznvJvQxLRMAMxztCwgEr5520cxqNo02S3hNsOwF0xJ t1K1iURZCFxNolSz68eSJOaXo7e77HPwiSze+JCRSfG5qJcltOlvgqO7UC/6wYcZ 2Z6tv3nGHzrQPVYR0aeWJXZJG8xIrr1Awg0P+G0ky6gfWCAGd7KBP6kYfuFVlytS +ztGEe37SxgGGTisoMMh =Y476 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'sound-3.15-rc1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tiwai/sound Pull sound updates from Takashi Iwai: "There have been lots of changes in ALSA core, HD-audio and ASoC, also most of PCI drivers touched by conversions of printks. Merge branch 'irq-core-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip
Pull irq code updates from Thomas Gleixner: "The irq department proudly presents: - Another tree wide sweep of irq infrastructure abuse. Clear winner of the trainwreck engineering contest was: #include "../../../kernel/irq/settings.h" - Tree wide update of irq_set_affinity() callbacks which miss a cpu online check when picking a single cpu out of the affinity mask. - Tree wide consolidation of interrupt statistics. - Updates to the threaded interrupt infrastructure to allow explicit wakeup of the interrupt thread and a variant of synchronize_irq() which synchronizes only the hard interrupt handler. Both are needed to replace the homebrewn thread handling in the mmc/sdhci code. - New irq chip callbacks to allow proper support for GPIO based irqs. The GPIO based interrupts need to request/release GPIO resources from request/free_irq. - A few new ARM interrupt chips. No revolutionary new hardware, just differently wreckaged variations of the scheme. - Small improvments, cleanups and updates all over the place" I was hoping that that trainwreck engineering contest was a April Fools' joke.
