ACPICA commit e4f0b73c107680841d7dd01cc04ec108df6580bd
There is code in acpi_hw_build_pci_list() destructing returned object
(return_list_head) before touching it while the allocated new object
(list_head) is not tracked correctly to be destructed on the error case,
which is detected as unsecure code by the "Coverity" tool.
This patch fixes this issue by always intializing the returned object in
acpi_hw_build_pci_list() so that the caller of acpi_hw_build_pci_list() needn't
initialize it and always using the returned object to track the new
allocated objects. Lv Zheng.

It is reported that ACPI interrupts do not work any more on
Dell Latitude D600 after commit c50f13c672 (ACPICA: Save
current masks of enabled GPEs after enable register writes).
The problem turns out to be related to the fact that the
enable_mask and enable_for_run GPE bit masks are not in
sync (in the absence of any system suspend/resume events)
for at least one GPE register on that machine.
Address this problem by writing the enable_for_run mask into
enable_mask as soon as enable_for_run is updated instead of
doing that only after the subsequent register write has
succeeded. For consistency, update acpi_hw_gpe_enable_write()
to store the bit mask to be written into the GPE register
in enable_mask unconditionally before the write.
Since the ACPI_GPE_SAVE_MASK flag is not necessary any more after
that, drop it along with the symbols depending on it.

essentially useless for its primary purpose.
Worse, some BIOS vendors have used the difference in _REV values between
Windows and ACPICA to indicate which one is running.
It has been decided by the ACPI community to deprecate this method, and return
1 for ACPI 1.0 (32-bit integers) and 2 for ACPI 2.0 and greater (both 32-bit

methods so the kernel part only includes the grammar definition of

ACPICA commit 6eb364d790dd103bd4990f808e0095a421c437cb
acpi_tb_store_table() implements a logic that is only correct to iasl. So it
won't be used by any other utilities except iasl. This function is
complained by the kernel users as an unused function. The best choice to
stop releasing it to the Linux kernel should be moving it to adisasm.c.
ACPI table manager can use both struct acpi_table_desc (direct referencing)
and table index (indirect referencing) as the descriptor to the table, so
acpi_tb_get_next_root_index() is extended to return both of them to allow
maximum usability from the callers. NOTE that indirect referencing is a
design result to meet the boot stage static allocation requirement for the
table descriptors.
This is a linuxized acpi_tb_store_table() removing result, there should be
no functional changes introduced to the Linux kernel by this patch except
the additonal kernel unused argument for acpi_tb_get_next_root_index()
(renamed to acpi_tb_get_next_root_index()). This argument is used in the
ACPICA upstream.

ACPICA commit e25d791e4b3d5b9f4ead298269610cb05f89749a
There is a facility in Linux, developers can obtain GPE and fixed event
status via /sys/firmware/interrupts/. This is implemented using
acpi_get_event_status() and acpi_get_gpe_status(). Recently while debugging some
GPE race issues, it is found that the facility is lacking in the ability to
obtain real hardware register values, the confusing information makes
debugging difficult.
This patch modifies acpi_get_gpe_status() to return EN register values to fix
this gap. Then flags returned from acpi_get_event_status() and
acpi_get_gpe_status() are also cleaned up to reflect this change.
The old ACPI_EVENT_FLAG_SET is carefully kept to avoid regressions. It can
be deleted after we can make sure all its references are removed from OSPM

ACPICA commit da9a83e1a845f2d7332bdbc0632466b2595e5424
For acpi_set_gpe()/acpi_enable_gpe(), our target is to purify them to be APIs
that can be used for various GPE handling models, so we need them to be
pure GPE enabling APIs. GPE enabling/disabling has 2 use cases:
1. Driver may permanently enable/disable GPEs according to the usage
counts.
1. When upper layers (the users of the driver) submit requests to the
driver, it means they care about the underlying hardware. GPE need
to be enabled for the first request submission and disabled for the
last request completion.
2. When the GPE is shared between 2+ silicon logics. GPE need to be
enabled for either silicon logic's driver and disabled when all of
the drivers are not started.
For these cases, acpi_enable_gpe()/acpi_disable_gpe() should be used. When
the usage count is increased from 0 to 1, the GPE is enabled and it is
disabled when the usage count is decrased from 1 to 0.
2. Driver may temporarily disables the GPE to enter an GPE polling mode and
wants to re-enable it later.
1. Prevent GPE storming: when a driver cannot fully solve the condition
that triggered the GPE in the GPE context, in order not to trigger
GPE storm, driver has to disable GPE to switch into the polling mode
and re-enables it in the non interrupt context after the storming
condition is cleared.
2. Meet throughput requirement: some IO drivers need to poll hardware
again and again until nothing indicated instead of just handling once
for one interruption, this need to be done in the polling mode or the
IO flood may prevent the GPE handler from returning.
3. Meet realtime requirement: in order not to block CPU to handle higher
realtime prioritized GPEs, lower priority GPEs can be handled in the
polling mode.
For these cases, acpi_set_gpe() should be used to switch to/from the
polling mode.
This patch adds unconditional GPE enabling support into acpi_set_gpe() so
that this API can be used by the drivers to switch back from the GPE
polling mode unconditionally.
Originally this function includes GPE clearing logic in it.
First, the GPE clearing is typically used in the GPE handling code to:
1. Acknowledge the GPE when we know there is an edge triggered GPE raised
and is about to handle it, otherwise the unexpected clearing may lead to
a GPE loss;
2. Issue actions after we have handled a level triggered GPE, otherwise
the unexpected clearing may trigger unwanted OSPM actions to the
hardware (for example, clocking in out-dated write FIFO data).
Thus the GPE clearing is not suitable to be used in the GPE enabling APIs.
Second, the combination of acknowledging and enabling may also not be
expected by the hardware drivers. For GPE clearing, we have a seperate API
acpi_clear_gpe(). There are cases drivers do want the 2 operations to be
split. So splitting these 2 operations could facilitates drivers the
maximum possibilities to achieve success. For a combined one, we already
have acpi_finish_gpe() ready to be invoked.
Given the fact that drivers should complete all outstanding requests before
putting themselves into the sleep states, as this API is executed for
outstanding requests, it should also have nothing to do with the
"RUN"/"WAKE" distinguishing. That's why the acpi_set_gpe(ACPI_GPE_ENABLE)
should not be implemented by acpi_hw_low_set_gpe(ACPI_GPE_CONDITIONAL_ENABLE).
This patch thus converts acpi_set_gpe(ACPI_GPE_ENABLE) into
acpi_hw_low_set_gpe(ACPI_GPE_ENABLE) to achieve a seperate GPE enabling API.
Drivers then are encouraged to use this API when they need to switch
to/from the GPE polling mode.
Note that the acpi_set_gpe()/acpi_finish_gpe() should be first introduced to
Linux using a divergence reduction patch before sending a linuxized version
of this patch. Lv Zheng.

This can help to reduce source code differences between Linux and ACPICA
upstream. Further driver cleanups also require these APIs to eliminate GPE
storms.
1. acpi_set_gpe(): An API that driver should invoke in the case it wants
to disable/enable IRQ without honoring the reference
count implemented in the acpi_disable_gpe() and
acpi_enable_gpe(). Note that this API should only be
invoked inside a acpi_enable_gpe()/acpi_disable_gpe()
pair.
2. acpi_finish_gpe(): Drivers returned ACPI_REENABLE_GPE unset from the
GPE handler should use this API instead of
invoking acpi_set_gpe()/acpi_enable_gpe() to
re-enable the GPE.
The GPE APIs can be invoked inside of a GPE handler or in the task context
with a driver provided lock held. This driver provided lock is safe to be
held in the GPE handler by the driver.

ACPICA commit 199cad16530a45aea2bec98e528866e20c5927e1
Since whether the GPE should be disabled/enabled/cleared should only be
determined by the GPE driver's state machine:
1. GPE should be disabled if the driver wants to switch to the GPE polling
mode when a GPE storm condition is indicated and should be enabled if
the driver wants to switch back to the GPE interrupt mode when all of
the storm conditions are cleared. The conditions should be protected by
the driver's specific lock.
2. GPE should be enabled if the driver has accepted more than one request
and should be disabled if the driver has completed all of the requests.
The request count should be protected by the driver's specific lock.
3. GPE should be cleared either when the driver is about to handle an edge
triggered GPE or when the driver has completed to handle a level
triggered GPE. The handling code should be protected by the driver's
specific lock.
Thus the GPE enabling/disabling/clearing operations are likely to be
performed with the driver's specific lock held while we currently cannot do
this. This is because:
1. We have the acpi_gbl_gpe_lock held before invoking the GPE driver's
handler. Driver's specific lock is likely to be held inside of the
handler, thus we can see some dead lock issues due to the reversed
locking order or recursive locking. In order to solve such dead lock
issues, we need to unlock the acpi_gbl_gpe_lock before invoking the
handler. BZ 1100.
2. Since GPE disabling/enabling/clearing should be determined by the GPE
driver's state machine, we shouldn't perform such operations inside of
ACPICA for a GPE handler to mess up the driver's state machine. BZ 1101.
Originally this patch includes a logic to flush GPE handlers, it is dropped
due to the following reasons:
1. This is a different issue;
2. Linux OSL has fixed this by flushing SCI in acpi_os_wait_events_complete().
We will pick up this topic when the Linux OSL fix turns out to be not
sufficient.
Note that currently the internal operations and the acpi_gbl_gpe_lock are
also used by ACPI_GPE_DISPATCH_METHOD and ACPI_GPE_DISPATCH_NOTIFY. In
order not to introduce regressions, we add one
ACPI_GPE_DISPATCH_RAW_HANDLER type to be distiguished from
ACPI_GPE_DISPATCH_HANDLER. For which the acpi_gbl_gpe_lock is unlocked before
invoking the GPE handler and the internal enabling/disabling operations are
bypassed to allow drivers to perform them at a proper position using the
GPE APIs and ACPI_GPE_DISPATCH_RAW_HANDLER users should invoke acpi_set_gpe()
instead of acpi_enable_gpe()/acpi_disable_gpe() to bypass the internal GPE
clearing code in acpi_enable_gpe(). Lv Zheng.
Known issues:
1. Edge-triggered GPE lost for frequent enablings
On some buggy silicon platforms, GPE enable line may not be directly
wired to the GPE trigger line. In that case, when GPE enabling is
frequently performed for edge-triggered GPEs, GPE status may stay set
without being triggered.
This patch may maginify this problem as it allows GPE enabling to be
parallel performed during the process the GPEs are handled.
This is an existing issue, because:
1. For task context:
Current ACPI_GPE_DISPATCH_METHOD practices have proven that this
isn't a real issue - we can re-enable edge-triggered GPE in a work
queue where the GPE status bit might already be set.
2. For IRQ context:
This can even happen when the GPE enabling occurs before returning
from the GPE handler and after unlocking the GPE lock.
Thus currently no code is included to protect this.

ACPICA commit 7926d5ca9452c87f866938dcea8f12e1efb58f89
There is an issue in acpi_install_gpe_handler() and acpi_remove_gpe_handler().
The code to obtain the GPE dispatcher type from the Handler->original_flags
is wrong:
if (((Handler->original_flags & ACPI_GPE_DISPATCH_METHOD) ||
(Handler->original_flags & ACPI_GPE_DISPATCH_NOTIFY)) &&
ACPI_GPE_DISPATCH_NOTIFY is 0x03 and ACPI_GPE_DISPATCH_METHOD is 0x02, thus
this statement is TRUE for the following dispatcher types:
0x01 (ACPI_GPE_DISPATCH_HANDLER): not expected
0x02 (ACPI_GPE_DISPATCH_METHOD): expected
0x03 (ACPI_GPE_DISPATCH_NOTIFY): expected
There is no functional issue due to this because Handler->original_flags is
only set in acpi_install_gpe_handler(), and an earlier checker has excluded
the ACPI_GPE_DISPATCH_HANDLER:
if ((gpe_event_info->Flags & ACPI_GPE_DISPATCH_MASK) ==
ACPI_GPE_DISPATCH_HANDLER)
{
Status = AE_ALREADY_EXISTS;
goto free_and_exit;
}
...
Handler->original_flags = (u8) (gpe_event_info->Flags &
(ACPI_GPE_XRUPT_TYPE_MASK | ACPI_GPE_DISPATCH_MASK));
We need to clean this up before modifying the GPE dispatcher type values.
In order to prevent such issue from happening in the future, this patch
introduces ACPI_GPE_DISPATCH_TYPE() macro to be used to obtain the GPE
dispatcher types. Lv Zheng.

ACPICA commit 8823b44ff53859ab24ecfcfd3fba8cc56b17d223
Currently we rely on the logic that GPE blocks will never be deleted,
otherwise we can be broken by the race between acpi_ev_create_gpe_block(),
acpi_ev_delete_gpe_block() and acpi_ev_gpe_detect().
On the other hand, if we want to protect GPE block creation/deletion, we
need to use a different synchronization facility to protect the period
between acpi_ev_gpe_dispatch() and acpi_ev_asynch_enable_gpe(). Which leaves us
no choice but abandoning the ACPI_MTX_EVENTS used during this period.
This patch removes ACPI_MTX_EVENTS used during this period and the
acpi_ev_valid_gpe_event() to reflect current restriction. Lv Zheng.

This patch deletes a sanity check from acpi_ev_enable_gpe().
This kind of check is already done in
acpi_enable_gpe()/acpi_remove_gpe_handler()/acpi_update_all_gpes() before invoking
acpi_ev_enable_gpe():
1. acpi_enable_gpe(): same check (skip if DISPATCH_NONE) is now implemented.
2. acpi_remove_gpe_handler(): a more strict check (skip if !DISPATCH_HANDLER)
is implemented.
3. acpi_update_all_gpes(): a more strict check (skip if DISPATCH_NONE ||
DISPATCH_HANDLER || CAN_WAKE)
4. acpi_set_gpe(): since it is invoked by the OSPM driver where the GPE
handler is known to be available, such check isn't needed.
So we can simply remove this duplicated check from acpi_ev_enable_gpe().

There is a race condition between acpi_hw_disable_all_gpes() or
acpi_enable_all_wakeup_gpes() and acpi_ev_asynch_enable_gpe() such
that if the latter wins the race, it may mistakenly enable a GPE
disabled by the former. This may lead to premature system wakeups
during system suspend and potentially to more serious consequences.
The source of the problem is how acpi_hw_low_set_gpe() works when
passed ACPI_GPE_CONDITIONAL_ENABLE as the second argument. In that
case, the GPE will be enabled if the corresponding bit is set in the
enable_for_run mask of the GPE enable register containing that bit.
However, acpi_hw_disable_all_gpes() and acpi_enable_all_wakeup_gpes()
don't modify the enable_for_run masks of GPE registers when writing
to them. In consequence, if acpi_ev_asynch_enable_gpe(), which
eventually calls acpi_hw_low_set_gpe() with the second argument
equal to ACPI_GPE_CONDITIONAL_ENABLE, is executed in parallel with
one of these functions, it may reverse changes made by them.
To fix the problem, introduce a new enable_mask field in struct
acpi_gpe_register_info in which to store the current mask of
enabled GPEs and modify acpi_hw_low_set_gpe() to take this
mask into account instead of enable_for_run when its second
argument is equal to ACPI_GPE_CONDITIONAL_ENABLE. Also modify
the low-level routines called by acpi_hw_disable_all_gpes(),
acpi_enable_all_wakeup_gpes() and acpi_enable_all_runtime_gpes()
to update the enable_mask masks of GPE registers after all
(successful) writes to those registers.

Since acpi_hw_enable_wakeup_gpe_block() is currently always called
after disabling all GPEs, it can actually write zeros to all
non-wakeup enable bits unconditionally.
That will be useful going forward for disabling runtime GPEs and
enabling wakeup GPEs in one go instead of doing that in two steps
(disable runtime and enable wakeup) which in theory may lead to a
loss of a wakeup event.

Changes to correct several GPIO issues:
1) The update_rule in a GPIO field definition is now ignored;
a read-modify-write operation is never performed for GPIO fields.
(Internally, this means that the field assembly/disassembly
code is completely bypassed for GPIO.)
2) The Address parameter passed to a GPIO region handler is
now the bit offset of the field from a previous Connection()
operator. Thus, it becomes a "Pin Number Index" into the
Connection() resource descriptor.
3) The bit_width parameter passed to a GPIO region handler is
now the exact bit width of the GPIO field. Thus, it can be
interpreted as "number of pins".
Overall, we can now say that the region handler interface
to GPIO handlers is a raw "bit/pin" addressed interface, not
a byte-addressed interface like the system_memory handler interface.

Some potential callers of acpi_setup_gpe_for_wake may know in advance that
there won't be any notify handlers installed for device wake notifications
from the given GPE (one example is a button GPE in Linux). For these cases,
acpi_mark_gpe_for_wake should be used instead of acpi_setup_gpe_for_wake.
This will set the ACPI_GPE_CAN_WAKE flag for the GPE without trying to
setup implicit wake notification for it (since there's no handler method).

This patch uses abstract file IO and acpi_log_error() APIs to enhance
cm_get_file_size() so that applications that invoke this API could have
portability improved.
With actual references added to abstract file IO and acpi_log_error(), the
applications need to link oslibcfs.o, utdebug.o, utexcep.o, utmath.o,
utprint.o and utxferror.o.

This patch enhances ACPI_USAGE_xxx/ACPI_OPTION macros to use portable
acpi_os_printf() so that usage functions for applications no longer rely on
the printf() API.
To use acpi_os_printf() exported by osunixxf.c as a replacement of
printf(), applications need to initialize acpi_gbl_output_file to stdout
and initialize acpi_gbl_db_output_flags to ACPI_DB_CONSOLE_OUTPUT. The
latter is automatically done by ACPI_INIT_GLOBAL(), applications need to
link utglobal.o to utilize this mechanism. For GCC, assigning stdout to
acpi_gbl_output_file using ACPI_INIT_GLOBAL() is not possible as stdout is
not a constant in GCC environment. As an alternative solution, stdout
assignment has been put into acpi_os_initialize(). Thus
acpi_os_initialize() need to be invoked very early by the applications to
initialize the default output of acpi_os_printf() to keep behavior
consistency.

Note that though acpi_os_initialize() need to be invoked prior than using

This patch introduces formatted printing APIs to handle ACPICA specific
formatted print requirements. Currently only specific OSPMs will use this
customized printing support, Linux kernel doesn't use these APIs at this
time. It will be enabled for Linux kernel resident ACPICA after being well
tested. So currently this patch is a no-op.
The specific formatted printing APIs are useful to ACPICA as:
1. Some portable applications do not link standard C library, so they
cannot use standard formatted print APIs directly.
2. Platform specific printing format may differ and thus not portable, for
example, u64 is %ull for Linux kernel and is %uI64 for some MSVC
versions.
3. Platform specific printing format may conflict with ACPICA's usages
while it is not possible for ACPICA developers to test their code for
all platforms. For example, developers may generate %pRxxx while Linux
kernel treats %pR as structured resource printing and decodes variable
argument as a "struct resource" pointer.
This patch solves above issues by introducing the new APIs.
Note that users of such APIs are not introduced in this patch. Users of
acpi_os_file_vprintf()/acpi_ut_file_printf() need to invoke acpi_os_initialize(),
this should be taken care by the further patches where such users are
introduced. Lv Zheng.

This patch is mainly for acpidump where there are redundant
acpi_os_printf()/acpi_os_vprintf() stubs implemented. This patch cleans up such
specific implementation by linking acpidump to osunixxf.c/oswinxf.c.
To make acpi_os_printf() exported by osunixxf.c/oswinxf.c to behave as the
old acpidump specific ones, applications need to:
1. Initialize acpi_gbl_db_output_flags to ACPI_DB_CONSOLE_OUTPUT.
This is automatically done by ACPI_INIT_GLOBAL(), applications need to
link utglobal.o to utilize this mechanism.
2. Initialize acpi_gbl_output_file to stdout.
For GCC, assigning stdout to acpi_gbl_output_file using ACPI_INIT_GLOBAL()
is not possible as stdout is not a constant in GCC environment. As an
alternative solution, stdout assignment is put into acpi_os_initialize().

The utglobal.c is used to define and initialize global variables. It makes
sense if just adding utglobal.o to applications that are using such
variables. But acpi_ut_init_globals() is preventing us from doing so as
this initialization function references other components' initializations
code, which leads to the requirement that many files should also get linked
if one wants to link utglobal.o.
It is possible to just move acpi_ut_init_global() to utinit.c for
applications that require this function to link.
By linking utglobal.o, we can stop defining DEFINE_ACPI_GLOBALS for
applications (currently only acpidump is affected). Lv Zheng.

It is reported that Linux x86 kernel cannot map large tables. The following
large SSDT table on such platform fails to pass checksum verification and
cannot be installed:
ACPI: SSDT 0x00000000B9638018 07A0C4 (v02 INTEL S2600CP 00004000 INTL 20100331)
It sounds strange that in the 64-bit virtual memory address space, we
cannot map a single ACPI table to do checksum verification. The root cause
is:
1. ACPICA doesn't split IO memory mapping and table mapping;
2. Linux x86 OSL implements acpi_os_map_memory() using a size limited fix-map
mechanism during early boot stage, which is more suitable for only IO
mappings.
ACPICA originally only mapped table header for signature validation, and
this header mapping is required by OSL override mechanism. There was no
checksum verification because we could not map the whole table using this
OSL. While the following ACPICA commit enforces checksum verification by
mapping the whole table during Linux boot stage and it finally triggers
this issue on some platforms:
Commit: 86dfc6f339
Subject: ACPICA: Tables: Fix table checksums verification before installation.
Before doing further cleanups for the OSL table mapping and override
implementation, this patch introduces an option for such OSPMs to
temporarily discard the checksum verification feature. It then can be
re-enabled easily when the ACPICA and the underlying OSL is ready.
This patch also deletes a comment around the limitation of mappings because
it is not correct. The limitation is not how many times we can map in the
early stage, but the OSL mapping facility may not be suitable for mapping
the ACPI tables and thus may complain us the size limitation.
The acpi_tb_verify_table() is renamed to acpi_tb_verify_temp_table() due to the
work around added, it now only applies to the table descriptor that hasn't
been installed and cannot be used in other cases. Lv Zheng.

With the NULL entry sanity check implemented, the XSDT validation is
useless because:
1. If XSDT contains NULL entries, it can be bypassed by the new sanity
check mechanism;
2. If RSDP contains a bad XSDT address, invoking XSDT validation will still
lead to a kernel crash.
This patch deletes the old XSDT validation solution and thus enables the
new NULL entry sanity check solution.

differences can only be seen on the following 2 entries:
1. The first entry points to a FADT whose Revision is 5 while the first
entry in RSDT points to a FADT whose Revision is 2.
The FADT dumped from the address indicated by the first entry of XSDT:
FACP @ 0x00000000BA5F8180
0000: 46 41 43 50 0C 01 00 00<05>4B 41 4C 41 53 4B 41 FACP.....KALASKA
...
The FADT dumped from the address indicated by the first entry of RSDT:
FACP @ 0x00000000BA5ED0F0
0000: 46 41 43 50 84 00 00 00<02>A7 41 4C 41 53 4B 41 FACP......ALASKA
...
2. The last entry is a NULL terminator.
According to the test result, the Revision 5 FADT is accessible. Thus the
original solution turns out to be a work around that is preventing the
higher revision tables to be used for such platforms (they are all x86-64
platforms, and should use XSDT and higher revision FADT).
This patch offers a new solution, where a sanity check is performed before
installing a table address from XSDT. If the entry is NULL, it is simply
discarded.
Note that, this patch doesn't remove the original solution, so for Linux
kernel, this commit is actually a no-op, but it allows acpidump to be
working on such platforms. By doing so, we allow another easy revertable
commit to enable this feature so that when that commit is reverted, the
useful sanity check will not be affected. Lv Zheng.

OSPMs like Linux trend to include all header files but leave empty stub
macros for a feature that is not configured during build.
This patch cleans up global variables that are defined in utglobal.c using
ACPI_INIT_GLOBAL mechanism. In Linux, such global variables are used by
the subsystems external to ACPICA.
This patch also cleans up global variables that are defined in utglobal.c
using ACPI_GLOBAL mechanism. In Linux, such global variables are not used
or should not be used by the subsystems external to ACPICA.
External global variables can be redefined by OSPMs using
ACPI_INIT_GLOBAL/ACPI_GLOBAL macros. Thus the ACPI_GLOBAL/ACPI_INIT_GLOBAL
mechanisms can be used by OSPM to implement stubs for such external
globals.

This patch refines ACPI_TABLE_ORIGIN_xxx flags. No functional changes.
The previous commits have introduced the following internal APIs:
1. acpi_tb_acquire_table: Acquire struct acpi_table_header according to
ACPI_TABLE_ORIGIN_xxx flags.
2. acpi_tb_release_table: Release struct acpi_table_header according to
ACPI_TABLE_ORIGIN_xxx flags.
3. acpi_tb_install_table: Make struct acpi_table_desc.Address not NULL according to
ACPI_TABLE_ORIGIN_xxx flags.
4. acpi_tb_uninstall_table: Make struct acpi_table_desc.Address NULL according to
ACPI_TABLE_ORIGIN_xxx flags.
5. acpi_tb_validate_table: Make struct acpi_table_desc.Pointer not NULL according to
ACPI_TABLE_ORIGIN_xxx flags.
6. acpi_tb_invalidate_table: Make struct acpi_table_desc.Pointer NULL according to
ACPI_TABLE_ORIGIN_xxx flags.
It thus detects that the ACPI_TABLE_ORIGIN_UNKNOWN is redundant to
ACPI_TABLE_ORIGIN_OVERRIDE.

not to confuse with x86 logical address, this patch also renames all

The original table handling code does not always verify checksums before
installing a table, this is because code to achieve this must be
implemented here and there in the redundant code blocks.
There are two stages during table initialization:
1. "INSTALLED" after acpi_tb_install_table() and acpi_tb_override_table(),
struct acpi_table_desc.Pointer is ensured to be NULL. This can be safely used
during OSPM's early boot stage.
2. "VALIDATED" after acpi_tb_validate_table(), struct acpi_table_desc.Pointer is
ensured to be not NULL. This must not be used during OSPM's early boot
stage.
This patch changes acpi_tb_add_table() into an early boot safe API to reduce
code redundancies by changing the table state that is returned by this
function from "VALIDATED" to "INSTALLED". Then the table verification
code can be done in a single place. Originally, the acpi_tb_add_table() can
only be used by dynamic table loadings that are executed after early boot
stage, it cannot be used by static table loadings that are executed in
early boot stage as:
1. The address of the table is a virtual address either maintained by
OSPMs who call acpi_load_table() or by ACPICA whenever "Load" or
"LoadTable" opcodes are executed, while during early boot stage,
physical address of the table should be used for table loading.
2. The API will ensure the state of the loaded table to be "VALIDATED"
while during early boot stage, tables maintained by root table list
should be kept as "INSTALLED".
To achieve this:
1. Rename acpi_tb_install_table() to acpi_tb_install_fixed_table() as it only
applies to DSDT/FACS installation. Rename acpi_tb_add_table() to
acpi_tb_install_non_fixed_table() as it will be applied to the installation
of the rest kinds of tables.
2. Introduce acpi_tb_install_table(), acpi_tb_install_and_override_table to collect
redudant code where their invocations actually have slight differences.
1. acpi_tb_install_table() is used to fill an struct acpi_table_desc where the
table length is known to the caller.
2. acpi_tb_install_and_override_table() is used to perform necessary
overriding before installation.
3. Change a parameter of acpi_tb_install_non_fixed_table() from struct acpi_table_desc
to acpi_physical_address to allow it to be invoked by static table
loadings. Also cleanup acpi_ex_load_op() and acpi_load_table() to accomodate
to the parameter change.
4. Invoke acpi_tb_install_non_fixed_table() for all table loadings other than
DSDT/FACS in acpi_tb_parse_root_table() to improve code maintainability
(logics are collected in the single function). Also delete useless code
from acpi_tb_parse_root_table().
5. Remove all acpi_tb_validate_table() from acpi_tb_install_non_fixed_table() and
acpi_tb_install_fixed_table() so that the table descriptor is kept in the
state of "INSTALLED" but not "VALIDATED" after returning from these
functions.
6. Introduce temporary struct acpi_table_desc (new_table_desc/old_table_desc) into
the functions to indicate a table descriptor that is not maintained by
acpi_gbl_root_table_list. Introduce acpi_tb_acquire_temporal_table() and
acpi_tb_release_temporal_table() to handle the use cases of such temporal
tables. They are only used for verified installation.
7. Introduce acpi_tb_verify_table() to validate table and verify table
checksum, also remove table checksum verification from
acpi_tb_validate_table(). Invoke acpi_tb_validate_table() in the functions
that will convert a table into "LOADED" state or invoke it from
acpi_get_table_XXX() APIs. Invoke acpi_tb_verify_table() on temporary
struct acpi_table_desc(s) that are going to be "INSTALLED".
8. Change acpi_tb_override_table() logic so that a temporary struct acpi_table_desc
will be overridden before installtion, this makes code simpler.
After applying the patch, tables are always installed after being
overridden and the table checksums are always verified before installation.

As acpi_tb_validate_table() returns failure on checksum verification without
doing invalidatation, all its invocations that are not done to a descriptor
stored in acpi_gbl_root_table_list are checked and balanced.
But this is not a real issue as the descritors that have been passed to
acpi_tb_add_table() are all virtual address tables and the validations are in
fact no-op. The cleanup can ensure that any future extensions made on
acpi_tb_add_table() to allow it to be invoked with physical address tables
will not trigger memory leakage regressions.

This patch is mainly a naming cleanup to clarify hidden logics, no
functional changes.
acpi_initialize_tables() is used by Linux to install table addresses for
early boot steps. During this stage, table addresses are mapped by
early_ioremap() mechanism which is different from the runtime IO mappings.
Thus it is not safe for ACPICA to keep mapped pointers in struct acpi_table_desc
structure during this stage.
In order to support this in ACPICA, table states are divided into
1. "INSTALLED" (where struct acpi_table_desc.Pointer is always NULL) and
2. "VALIDATED" (where struct acpi_table_desc.Pointer is always not NULL).
During acpi_initialize_tables(), table state are ensured to be "INSTALLED"
but not "VALIDATED". This logic is ensured by the original code in very
ambigious way. For example, currently acpi_tb_delete_table() is invoked in
some place to perform an uninstallation while it is invoked in other place
to perform an invalidation. They happen to work just because no one enters
the penalty where the 2 behaviours are not equivalent.
The naming cleanups are made in this patch:
A. For installation and validation:
There is code setting struct acpi_table_desc.Pointer first and delete it
immediately to keep the descriptor's state as "INSTALLED" during the
installation. This patch implements this in more direct way. After
applying it, struct acpi_table_desc.Pointer will never be set in
acpi_tb_install_table() and acpi_tb_override_table() as they are the only
functions invoked during acpi_initialize_tables(). This is achieved by:
1. Rename acpi_tb_verify_table() to acpi_tb_validate_table() to clarify this
change.
2. Rename acpi_tb_table_override() to acpi_tb_override_table() to keep nameing
consistencies as other APIs (verb. Table).
3. Stops setting struct acpi_table_desc.Pointer in acpi_tb_install_table() and
acpi_tb_table_override().
4. Introduce acpi_tb_acquire_table() to acquire the table pointer that is not
maintained in the struct acpi_table_desc of the global root table list and
rewrite acpi_tb_validate_table() using this new function to reduce
redundancies.
5. Replace the table pointer using the overridden table pointer in
acpi_tb_add_table(). As acpi_tb_add_table() is not invoked during early boot
stage, tables returned from this functions should be "VALIDATED". As
acpi_tb_override_table() is modified by this patch to return a "INSTALLED"
but not "VALIDATED" descriptor, to keep acpi_tb_add_table() unchanged,
struct acpi_table_desc.Pointer is filled in acpi_tb_add_table().
B. For invalidation and uninstallation:
The original code invalidate table by invoking acpi_tb_delete_table() here
and there, but actually this function should only be used to uninstall
tables. This can work just because its invocations are equivalent to
invalidation in some cases.
This patch splits acpi_tb_delete_table() into acpi_tb_invalidate_table() and
acpi_tb_uninstall_table() and cleans up the hidden logic using the new
APIs. This is achieved by:
1. Rename acpi_tb_delete_table() to acpi_tb_uninstall_table() as it is mainly
called before resetting struct acpi_table_desc.Address. Thus the table
descriptor is in "not INSTALLED" state. This patch enforces this by
setting struct acpi_table_desc.Address to NULL in this function.
2. Introduce acpi_tb_invalidate_table() to be the reversal of
acpi_tb_validate_table() and invoke it in acpi_tb_uninstall_table().
3. Introduce acpi_tb_release_table() to release the table pointer that is not
maintained in acpi_gbl_root_table_list and rewrite acpi_tb_invalidate_table()
using this new function to reduce redundancies.
After cleaning up, the maintainability of the internal APIs are also
improved:
1. acpi_tb_acquire_table: Acquire struct acpi_table_header according to
ACPI_TABLE_ORIGIN_xxx flags.
2. acpi_tb_release_table: Release struct acpi_table_header according to
ACPI_TABLE_ORIGIN_xxx flags.
3. acpi_tb_install_table: Make struct acpi_table_desc.Address not NULL according to
ACPI_TABLE_ORIGIN_xxx flags.
4. acpi_tb_uninstall_table: Make struct acpi_table_desc.Address NULL according to
ACPI_TABLE_ORIGIN_xxx flags.
5. acpi_tb_validate_table: Make struct acpi_table_desc.Pointer not NULL according to
ACPI_TABLE_ORIGIN_xxx flags.
6. acpi_tb_invalidate_table: Make struct acpi_table_desc.Pointer NULL according to
ACPI_TABLE_ORIGIN_xxx flags.
7. acpi_tb_override_table: Replace struct acpi_table_desc.Address and
struct acpi_table_desc.Flags. It only happens in
"INSTALLED" state.
The patch has been unit tested in acpi_exec by:
1. Initializing;
2. Executing exc_tbl ASLTS tests;
3. Executing "Load" command.
So that all original acpi_tb_install_table() and acpi_tb_override_table()
invocations are covered.
Known Issues:
1. Cleanup acpi_tb_add_table() to Kill Code Redundancies
Current implementation in acpi_tb_add_table() is not very clean, further
patch can rewrite acpi_tb_add_table() with ordered acpi_tb_install_table(),
acpi_tb_override_table() and acpi_tb_validate_table(). It is not done in this
patch so that it is easy for the reviewers to understand the changes in
this patch.

Currently there are following issues in acpi_tb_add_table():
Following logic is currently correct:
1. When a table is allocated in acpi_ex_load_op(), if a reloading happens,
the allocated memory is freed by acpi_tb_add_table() and AE_OK is
returned to the caller to avoid the caller to free it again.
Following logic is currently incorrect:
1. When a table is allocated in acpi_ex_load_op() or by the
acpi_load_table() caller, if the table is already loaded, there will be
twice ACPI_FREE() called for the same pointer when acpi_tb_add_table()
returns AE_ALREADY_EXISTS.
This patch only fixes the above incorrect logic in acpi_tb_add_table():
1. Only invoke acpi_tb_delete_table() if AE_OK is going to be returned.
2. After doing so, we do not invoke ACPI_FREE() when returning AE_OK;

When table is overridden or reloaded, acpi_tb_delete_table() is called where
struct acpi_table_desc.Pointer will be NULL. It thus is impossible for virtual
addressed tables to obtain the .Pointer again in acpi_tb_verify_table().
This patch stores virtual table addresses (ACPI_TABLE_ORIGIN_ALLOCATED,
ACPI_TABLE_ORIGIN_UNKNOWN, ACPI_TABLE_ORIGIN_OVERRIDE) in the
struct acpi_table_desc.Address field and refills the struct acpi_table_desc.Pointer
using these addresses in acpi_tb_verify_table(). Note that if a table with
ACPI_TABLE_ORIGIN_ALLOCATED set is actually freed, the .Address field
should be invalidated and thus must be replaced with NULL to avoid wrong
future validations occuring in acpi_tb_verify_table().

This patch cleans up all of the acpi_os_wait_events_complete() invocations to
make it to be invoked inside of ACPICA in the way to accommodate Linux's
work queue implementation.
According to the report, current Linux kernel code is facing a boot time
race issue in the acpi_remove_notify_handler(). This is because:
Linux is using work queues to implement a deferred handler call environment
while ACPICA expects OSPM to implement acpi_os_wait_events_complete() using
wait queues. The position to invoke a "waiter" is not suitable for a
"flusher" as new invocations can be scheduled after this position and
before the deletion of the handler from its management container.
Since the following commit has deleted acpi_os_wait_events_complete()
parameters, it thus might not be possible for OSPM to achieve a safe
removal using wait queues. This requires ACPICA to be changed accordingly
to "flush" handlers rather than "wait" them to be drain up:

Subject: Introduce acpi_os_wait_events_complete interface.
This interface will block until asynchronous events like notifies
and GPEs are complete. Within ACPICA, it is called before a notify or GPE
handler is removed. ACPICA BZ 868.
This patch fixes this issue by invoking acpi_os_wait_events_complete() in the
way to "flush" things - it thus should be put to the position after handler
is removed from its management container but before it is destructed.
The technical concerns are:
1. MTX_NAMESPACE is used to protect things that acpi_os_wait_events_complete()
might be waiting for, thus MTX_NAMESPACE must be unlocked before
invoking acpi_os_wait_events_complete().
2. MTX_NAMESPACE is also used to implement the serialization of
acpi_install_notify_handler() and acpi_remove_notify_handler(). This patch
changes this logic, thus if there are many
acpi_install/remove_notify_handler() invoked in parallel, the
acpi_os_wait_events_complete() might face the races which could cause it
never running to an end. Normally this will require additional code to
implement a separate locking facility which is not implemented due to 3.
3. Given ACPICA users will always invoke acpi_install_notify_handler() once
during Linux module/device initialization and invoke
acpi_remove_notify_handler() once during module/device finalization,
problem stated in 2 will not happen in Linux environment due to the
mutual exclusive module/device existence, this fix thus is sufficient.
Same concerns can apply to acpi_install/remove_gpe_handler(). Reported and
tested: Ronald Vink. Fixed: Lv Zheng.

ACPICA: Enable auto-serialization as a default kernel behavior.
ACPICA: Ignore sync_level for methods that have been auto-serialized.
ACPICA: Add additional named objects for the auto-serialize method scan.
ACPICA: Add auto-serialization support for ill-behaved control methods.
ACPICA: Remove global option to serialize all control methods.
The previous commit "ACPICA: Add auto-serialization support for ill-behaved
control methods" introduced the auto-serialization facility as a workaround
that can be enabled by "acpi_auto_serialize":
This feature marks control methods that create named objects as "serialized"
to avoid unwanted AE_ALREADY_EXISTS control method evaluation failures.
Enable method auto-serialization as the default kernel behavior. The new kernel
parameter is also changed from "acpi_auto_serialize" to "acpi_no_auto_serialize"
to reflect the default behavior.

Cannot use a sync_level for methods that have been serialized at load-time
or runtime because this may interfere with any existing use of sync_levels
within the ASL code. So, we simply ignore the sync_level for these methods,
thus preserving any existing sync_level priorities. Note, the use of
sync_levels is actually rather rare within BIOS ASL code.

This change adds support to automatically mark a control method as
"serialized" if the method creates any named objects. This will
positively prevent the method from being entered by more than one
thread and thus preventing a possible abort when an attempt is
made to create an object twice.
Implemented by parsing all non-serialize control methods at table
load time.
This feature is disabled by default and this patch also adds a new
Linux kernel parameter "acpi_auto_serialize" to allow this feature
to be turned on for a specific boot.

According to the reports, the "acpi_serialize" mechanism is broken as:
A. The parallel method calls can still happen when the interpreter lock is
released under the following conditions:
1. External callbacks are invoked, for example, by the region handlers,
the exception handlers, etc.;
2. Module level execution is performed when Load/LoadTable opcodes are
executed, and
3. The _REG control methods are invoked to complete the region
registrations.
B. For the following situations, the interpreter lock need to be released
even for a serialized method while currently, the lock-releasing
operation is marked as a no-op by
acpi_ex_relinquish/reacquire_interpreter() when this mechanism is
enabled:
1. Wait opcode is executed,
2. Acquire opcode is executed, and
3. Sleep opcode is executed.
This patch removes this mechanism and the internal
acpi_ex_relinquish/reacquire_interpreter() APIs. Lv Zheng.

It is reported that the #pragma pack(push/pop) directives are not supported

as there are already #pragma pack([1]) directives used in the old ACPICA

The utility has the capability to load some various tables to test
features of ACPICA. However, there are enough of them that the output

local tables are displayed (RSDP, XSDT, etc.) along with the actual
tables loaded via the command line specification. This makes the
default output simler and easier to understand. The -el command line

This patch reflects the improvment of a cleanup step which is performed in
the release process.
There are still spaces in the "linuxized" ACPICA files after special macro
invocations. This is because indent treats comments and pre-processor
directives as spaces, thus we need to skip them.
Before applying this patch, cleanup code will search from keyword back to
end of line and wipe spaces between them.
After applying this patch, cleanup code will search to the end of the macro
invocations, skip "empty lines", "comments" and "pre-processor directives",
then wipe the spaces between the new line and the first non-spaces
characters.
Following improvements are thus achieved in the release automation by this
commit which are originally maintained manually:

This patch adds __init to the ACPICA documented initializers:
acpi_initialize_tables()
acpi_initialize_subsystem()
acpi_load_tables()
acpi_enable_subsystem()
acpi_initialize_objects()
and to acpi_reallocate_root_table(), acpi_find_root_pointer() which
are also meant to be called only during initialization.
This patch adds __init to the ACPICA documented finalizer:
acpi_terminate()
as this finalizer is only called in __init function now.
This change helps to reduce source code differences between
ACPICA upstream and Linux.

Function acpi_ut_delete_caches() is meant to be used to implement
ACPI_ALLOCATE()/ACPI_FREE() mechanisms in ACPICA, so it should call
acpi_os_free() rather than ACPI_FREE(). Linux is not affected by this

During the automatic translation of the upstream ACPICA source code
into Linux kernel source code some extra white spaces are added by
the "indent" program at the beginning of each line which is an
invocation of a macro and there is no ";" at the end of the line.
For this reason, a new mode has been added to the translation scripts
to remove the extra spaces inserted before invoking such macros and add
an empty line between the invocations of such macros (like the other
function declarations). This new mode is executed after executing
"indent" during the Linux release process. Consequently, some
existing ACPICA source code in the Linux kernel tree needs to be
adjusted to allow the new scripts to work correctly.
The affected macros and files are:
1. ACPI_HW_DEPENDENT_RETURN (acpixf.h/acdebug.h/acevents.h):
This macro is used as a wrapper for hardware dependent APIs to offer
a stub when the reduced hardware is configured during compilation.
2. ACPI_EXPORT_SYMBOL (utglobal.c):
This macro is used by Linux to export symbols to be found by Linux
modules. All such invocations are well formatted except those
exported as global variables.
This can help to reduce the source code differences between Linux
and upstream ACPICA, and also help to automate the release process.
No functional or binary generation changes should result from it.

This changes can reduce source code differences between Linux and ACPICA
upstream to help improving the release automation.
The side effect of applying this patch in Linux is:
1. Some ACPICA initialization/termination APIs are no longer exported in
Linux, these include:
acpi_load_tables
acpi_initialize_subsystem
acpi_enable_subsystem
acpi_initialize_objects
acpi_terminate
2. This patch does not affect the following APIs as they are currently not
marked with ACPI_EXPORT_SYMBOL in Linux:
acpi_reallocate_root_table
acpi_initialize_tables
Such functions should not be exported as they are internal to ACPI
subsystem in Linux, and will only be invoked inside of ACPI subsystem's
initialization routines marked with __init and termination routines marked
with __exit. While on other OSPMs, such functions may still need to be
exported.
Thus this patch adds the configurability for ACPICA, so that it leaves
OSPMs to determine if the __init/__exit marked functions should be exported
or not. Lv Zheng.

directly to their respective acpi_os* OSL interfaces. Two options:
1) The ACPI_ALLOCATE_ZEROED macro defaults to a simple local implementation
by default, unless overridden by the USE_NATIVE_ALLOCATE_ZEROED define.
2) For ACPI execution simulation environment (AcpiExec) which is not
shipped with the Linux kernel, the macros can optionally be resolved to

This change adds full history and limited line editing for Unix and

Instead it uses the POSIX termio interface to put the terminal in raw
input mode so that the various special keys can be trapped (such as

Previously, references to these objects were resolved only to the actual

references to an actual value.
The problem is that DerefOf did not resolve these objects to actual

No functional change. Add some comments concerning behavior
when the _STA method does not exist. According to the ACPI
specification, in this case the device should be assumed to be
present, functional, and enabled.

Expose acpi_gbl_osi_data so that code outside of ACPICA can check
the value of the last successfull _OSI call. The definitions for
OSI versions are moved to actypes.h so that other components can
access them too.
Based on a patch from Matthew Garrett which in turn was based on
an earlier patch from Seth Forshee.

removed.

Sort list based on the C-state, remove invalid/zero entries.
ACPICA BZ 890. Lv Zheng.
Fixes these possible problems with the _CST object:
1. Sort the list ascending by C state type.
2. Ensure type cannot be zero.
3. A sub-package count of zero means _CST is meaningless.
4. Count must match the number of C state sub-packages.
