net: Facility to report route quality of connected sockets
This patch add the SO_CNX_ADVICE socket option (setsockopt only). The purpose is to allow an application to give feedback to the kernel about the quality of the network path for a connected socket. The value argument indicates the type of quality report. For this initial patch the only supported advice is a value of 1 which indicates "bad path, please reroute"-- the action taken by the kernel is to call dst_negative_advice which will attempt to choose a different ECMP route, reset the TX hash for flow label and UDP source port in encapsulation, etc. This facility should be useful for connected UDP sockets where only the application can provide any feedback about path quality. It could also be useful for TCP applications that have additional knowledge about the path outside of the normal TCP control loop. arch/frv/include/asm/io.h: accept const void pointers for read{b,w,l}()
The SMD driver is reading and writing chunks of data to iomem, and there's an __iowrite32_copy() function for the writing part, but no __ioread32_copy() function for the reading part. This series adds __ioread32_copy() and uses it in two places. This patch (of 4): The frv port uses compiler builtins, __builtin_read*(), for the I/O read routines. Unfortunately, these don't accept const void pointers although the generic ASM implementations do, so generic code passing const pointers to these APIs cause compilers to emit warnings. Add wrapper functions that cast away the const to avoid the warnings. libnvdimm for 4.5
1/ Media error handling: The 'badblocks' implementation that originated in md-raid is up-levelled to a generic capability of a block device. This initial implementation is limited to being consulted in the pmem block-i/o path. Later, 'badblocks' will be consulted when creating dax mappings. 2/ Raw block device dax: For virtualization and other cases that want large contiguous mappings of persistent memory, add the capability to dax-mmap a block device directly. 3/ Increased /dev/mem restrictions: Add an option to treat all io-memory as IORESOURCE_EXCLUSIVE, i.e. disable /dev/mem access while a driver is actively using an address range. This behavior is controlled via the new CONFIG_IO_STRICT_DEVMEM option and can be overridden by the existing "iomem=relaxed" kernel command line option. 4/ Miscellaneous fixes include a 'pfn'-device huge page alignment fix, block device shutdown crash fix, and other small libnvdimm fixes. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1 iQIcBAABAgAGBQJWlrhjAAoJEB7SkWpmfYgCFbAQALKsQfFwT6JFS+zlPgiNpbqw 2VMNKEH0AfGYGj96mT02j2q+vSUmXLMIDMTsbe0sDdtwFZtQbFmhmryzPWUVppSu KGTlLPW8vuEhQVs91+UI3BQKkvpi0+tbR8hPOh9W6QhjpRT+lyHFKnsNR5HZy5wB K4/VMaT5ffd5/pXRTjkYiPQYTwWyfcvNjICj0YtqhPvOwS031m77JpFsWJ8HSpEX K99VlzNUPMXd1pYkHmFNXWw52fhRGNhwAEomLeKMdQfKms+KnbKp8BOSA0aCqU8E kpujQcilDXJwykFQZOFI3Z5Dxvrv8lxFTU8HRMBvo3ESzfTWjfqcvyjGOjDUcruw ihESFSJtdZzhrBiMnf9RRqSpMFJvAT8MVT6Q4D3mZUHCMPbUqFJsQjMPt9hEH3ho 4F0D2lesOCkubUKFTZmjMoDb+szuKbVhYK8TeFVVEhizinc/Aj0NKuazJqi+CXB/ xh0ER4ZxD8wvzqFFWvS5UvR1G9I5fr7+3jGRUrqGLHlSdeXP9dkEg28ao3QbWk3x 1dPOen6ZqQ9WJ/E7eGmXbVEz2R4Xd79hMXQzdQwmKDk/KbxRoAp7hyU8BslAyrBf HCdmVt+RAgrxZYfFRXuLhqwEBThJnNrgZA3qu74FUpkpFg6xRUu1bAYBiF7N+bFi 82b5UbMkveBTtkXjJoiR =7V5r -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'libnvdimm-for-4.5' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/nvdimm/nvdimm Pull libnvdimm updates from Dan Williams: "The bulk of this has appeared in -next and independently received a build success notification from the kbuild robot. Merge branch 'strscpy' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/cmetcalf/linux-tile
Pull strscpy string copy function implementation from Chris Metcalf. Chris sent this during the merge window, but I waffled back and forth on the pull request, which is why it's going in only now. The new "strscpy()" function is definitely easier to use and more secure than either strncpy() or strlcpy(), both of which are horrible nasty interfaces that have serious and irredeemable problems. strncpy() has a useless return value, and doesn't NUL-terminate an overlong result. To make matters worse, it pads a short result with zeroes, which is a performance disaster if you have big buffers. strlcpy(), by contrast, is a mis-designed "fix" for strlcpy(), lacking the insane NUL padding, but having a differently broken return value which returns the original length of the source string. Which means that it will read characters past the count from the source buffer, and you have to trust the source to be properly terminated. It also makes error handling fragile, since the test for overflow is unnecessarily subtle. strscpy() avoids both these problems, guaranteeing the NUL termination (but not excessive padding) if the destination size wasn't zero, and making the overflow condition very obvious by returning -E2BIG. It also doesn't read past the size of the source, and can thus be used for untrusted source data too. So why did I waffle about this for so long? Every time we introduce a new-and-improved interface, people start doing these interminable series of trivial conversion patches. And every time that happens, somebody does some silly mistake, and the conversion patch to the improved interface actually makes things worse. Because the patch is mindnumbing and trivial, nobody has the attention span to look at it carefully, and it's usually done over large swatches of source code which means that not every conversion gets tested. So I'm pulling the strscpy() support because it *is* a better interface. But I will refuse to pull mindless conversion patches. Use this in places where it makes sense, but don't do trivial patches to fix things that aren't actually known to be broken. * 'strscpy' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/cmetcalf/linux-tile: tile: use global strscpy() rather than private copy string: provide strscpy() Make asm/word-at-a-time.h available on all architectures |

atomic, arch: Audit atomic_{read,set}()
This patch makes sure that atomic_{read,set}() are at least {READ,WRITE}_ONCE(). We already had the 'requirement' that atomic_read() should use ACCESS_ONCE(), and most archs had this, but a few were lacking. All are now converted to use READ_ONCE(). And, by a symmetry and general paranoia argument, upgrade atomic_set() to use WRITE_ONCE(). arch/*/io.h: Add ioremap_uc() to all architectures
This adds ioremap_uc() only for architectures that do not include asm-generic.h/io.h as that already provides a default definition for them for both cases where you have CONFIG_MMU and you do not, and because of this, the number of architectures this patch address is less than the architectures that the ioremap_wt() patch addressed, "arch/*/io.h: Add ioremap_wt() to all architectures"). In order to reduce the number of architectures we have to modify by adding new architecture IO APIs we'll have to review the architectures in this patch, see why they can't add asm-generic.h/io.h or issues that would be created by doing so and then spread a consistent inclusion of this header towards the end of their own header. For instance arch/metag includes the asm-generic/io.h *before* the ioremap*() definitions, this should be the other way around but only once we have guard wrappers for the non-MMU case also for asm-generic/io.h. frv: Rewrite atomic implementation
Mostly complete rewrite of the FRV atomic implementation, instead of using assembly files, use inline assembler. The out-of-line CONFIG option makes a bit of a mess of things, but a little CPP trickery gets that done too. FRV already had the atomic logic ops but under a non standard name, the reimplementation provides the generic names and provides the intermediate form required for the bitops implementation. The slightly inconsistent __atomic32_fetch_##op naming is because __atomic_fetch_##op conlicts with GCC builtin functions. The 64bit atomic ops use the inline assembly %Ln construct to access the low word register (r+1), afaik this construct was not previously used in the kernel and is completely undocumented, but I found it in the FRV GCC code and it seems to work. FRV had a non-standard definition of atomic_{clear,set}_mask() which would work types other than atomic_t, the one user relying on that (arch/frv/kernel/dma.c) got converted to use the new intermediate form. PCI: Call pci_read_bridge_bases() from core instead of arch code
When we scan a PCI bus, we read PCI-PCI bridge window registers with pci_read_bridge_bases() so we can validate the resource hierarchy. Most architectures call pci_read_bridge_bases() from pcibios_fixup_bus(), but PCI-PCI bridges are not arch-specific, so this doesn't need to be in arch-specific code. Call pci_read_bridge_bases() directly from the PCI core instead of from arch code. For alpha and mips, we now call pci_read_bridge_bases() always; previously we only called it if PCI_PROBE_ONLY was set. Make asm/word-at-a-time.h available on all architectures
Added the x86 implementation of word-at-a-time to the generic version, which previously only supported big-endian. Omitted the x86-specific load_unaligned_zeropad(), which in any case is also not present for the existing BE-only implementation of a word-at-a-time, and is only used under CONFIG_DCACHE_WORD_ACCESS. Added as a "generic-y" to the Kbuilds of all architectures that didn't previously have it. Signed-off-by: Chris Metcalf <cmetcalf@ezchip.com> |

frv: use for_each_sg()
This replaces the plain loop over the sglist array with for_each_sg() macro which consists of sg_next() function calls. Since frv doesn't select ARCH_HAS_SG_CHAIN, it is not necessary to use for_each_sg() in order to loop over each sg element. But this can help find problems with drivers that do not properly initialize their sg tables when CONFIG_DEBUG_SG is enabled. mm: new mm hook framework
CRIU is recreating the process memory layout by remapping the checkpointee memory area on top of the current process (criu). This includes remapping the vDSO to the place it has at checkpoint time. However some architectures like powerpc are keeping a reference to the vDSO base address to build the signal return stack frame by calling the vDSO sigreturn service. So once the vDSO has been moved, this reference is no more valid and the signal frame built later are not usable. This patch serie is introducing a new mm hook framework, and a new arch_remap hook which is called when mremap is done and the mm lock still hold. The next patch is adding the vDSO remap and unmap tracking to the powerpc architecture. This patch (of 3): This patch introduces a new set of header file to manage mm hooks: - per architecture empty header file (arch/x/include/asm/mm-arch-hooks.h) - a generic header (include/linux/mm-arch-hooks.h) The architecture which need to overwrite a hook as to redefine it in its header file, while architecture which doesn't need have nothing to do. The default hooks are defined in the generic header and are used in the case the architecture is not defining it. Merge branch 'x86-core-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip
Pull x86 core updates from Ingo Molnar: "There were so many changes in the x86/asm, x86/apic and x86/mm topics in this cycle that the topical separation of -tip broke down somewhat - so the result is a more traditional architecture pull request, collected into the 'x86/core' topic. The topics were still maintained separately as far as possible, so bisectability and conceptual separation should still be pretty good - but there were a handful of merge points to avoid excessive dependencies (and conflicts) that would have been poorly tested in the end. The next cycle will hopefully be much more quiet (or at least will have fewer dependencies). The main changes in this cycle were: * x86/apic changes, with related IRQ core changes: (Jiang Liu, Thomas Gleixner) - This is the second and most intrusive part of changes to the x86 interrupt handling - full conversion to hierarchical interrupt domains: [IOAPIC domain] ----- | [MSI domain] --------[Remapping domain] ----- [ Vector domain ] | (optional) | [HPET MSI domain] ----- | | [DMAR domain] ----------------------------- | [Legacy domain] ----------------------------- This now reflects the actual hardware and allowed us to distangle the domain specific code from the underlying parent domain, which can be optional in the case of interrupt remapping. It's a clear separation of functionality and removes quite some duct tape constructs which plugged the remap code between ioapic/msi/hpet and the vector management. - Intel IOMMU IRQ remapping enhancements, to allow direct interrupt injection into guests (Feng Wu) * x86/asm changes: - Tons of cleanups and small speedups, micro-optimizations. This is in preparation to move a good chunk of the low level entry code from assembly to C code (Denys Vlasenko, Andy Lutomirski, Brian Gerst) - Moved all system entry related code to a new home under arch/x86/entry/ (Ingo Molnar) - Removal of the fragile and ugly CFI dwarf debuginfo annotations. Conversion to C will reintroduce many of them - but meanwhile they are only getting in the way, and the upstream kernel does not rely on them (Ingo Molnar) - NOP handling refinements. (Borislav Petkov) * x86/mm changes: - Big PAT and MTRR rework: making the code more robust and preparing to phase out exposing direct MTRR interfaces to drivers - in favor of using PAT driven interfaces (Toshi Kani, Luis R Rodriguez, Borislav Petkov) - New ioremap_wt()/set_memory_wt() interfaces to support Write-Through cached memory mappings. This is especially important for good performance on NVDIMM hardware (Toshi Kani) * x86/ras changes: - Add support for deferred errors on AMD (Aravind Gopalakrishnan) This is an important RAS feature which adds hardware support for poisoned data. That means roughly that the hardware marks data which it has detected as corrupted but wasn't able to correct, as poisoned data and raises an APIC interrupt to signal that in the form of a deferred error. It is the OS's responsibility then to take proper recovery action and thus prolonge system lifetime as far as possible. - Add support for Intel "Local MCE"s: upcoming CPUs will support CPU-local MCE interrupts, as opposed to the traditional system- wide broadcasted MCE interrupts (Ashok Raj) - Misc cleanups (Borislav Petkov) * x86/platform changes: - Intel Atom SoC updates ... and lots of other cleanups, fixlets and other changes - see the shortlog and the Git log for details" * 'x86-core-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip: (222 commits) x86/hpet: Use proper hpet device number for MSI allocation x86/hpet: Check for irq==0 when allocating hpet MSI interrupts x86/mm/pat, drivers/infiniband/ipath: Use arch_phys_wc_add() and require PAT disabled x86/mm/pat, drivers/media/ivtv: Use arch_phys_wc_add() and require PAT disabled x86/platform/intel/baytrail: Add comments about why we disabled HPET on Baytrail genirq: Prevent crash in irq_move_irq() genirq: Enhance irq_data_to_desc() to support hierarchy irqdomain iommu, x86: Properly handle posted interrupts for IOMMU hotplug iommu, x86: Provide irq_remapping_cap() interface iommu, x86: Setup Posted-Interrupts capability for Intel iommu iommu, x86: Add cap_pi_support() to detect VT-d PI capability iommu, x86: Avoid migrating VT-d posted interrupts iommu, x86: Save the mode (posted or remapped) of an IRTE iommu, x86: Implement irq_set_vcpu_affinity for intel_ir_chip iommu: dmar: Provide helper to copy shared irte fields iommu: dmar: Extend struct irte for VT-d Posted-Interrupts iommu: Add new member capability to struct irq_remap_ops x86/asm/entry/64: Disentangle error_entry/exit gsbase/ebx/usermode code x86/asm/entry/32: Shorten __audit_syscall_entry() args preparation x86/asm/entry/32: Explain reloading of registers after __audit_syscall_entry() ... |

arch/*/io.h: Add ioremap_wt() to all architectures
Add ioremap_wt() to all arch-specific asm/io.h headers which define ioremap_wc() locally. These headers do not include <asm-generic/iomap.h>. Some of them include <asm-generic/io.h>, but ioremap_wt() is defined for consistency since they define all ioremap_xxx locally. In all architectures without Write-Through support, ioremap_wt() is defined indentical to ioremap_nocache(). frv and m68k already have ioremap_writethrough(). On those we add ioremap_wt() indetical to ioremap_writethrough() and defines ARCH_HAS_IOREMAP_WT in both architectures. The ioremap_wt() interface is exported to drivers. mm/fault, arch: Use pagefault_disable() to check for disabled pagefaults in the handler
Introduce faulthandler_disabled() and use it to check for irq context and disabled pagefaults (via pagefault_disable()) in the pagefault handlers. Please note that we keep the in_atomic() checks in place - to detect whether in irq context (in which case preemption is always properly disabled). In contrast, preempt_disable() should never be used to disable pagefaults. With !CONFIG_PREEMPT_COUNT, preempt_disable() doesn't modify the preempt counter, and therefore the result of in_atomic() differs. We validate that condition by using might_fault() checks when calling might_sleep(). Therefore, add a comment to faulthandler_disabled(), describing why this is needed. faulthandler_disabled() and pagefault_disable() are defined in linux/uaccess.h, so let's properly add that include to all relevant files. PCI: Assign resources before drivers claim devices (pci_scan_root_bus())
Previously, pci_scan_root_bus() created a root PCI bus, enumerated the devices on it, and called pci_bus_add_devices(), which made the devices available for drivers to claim them. Most callers assigned resources to devices after pci_scan_root_bus() returns, which may be after drivers have claimed the devices. This is incorrect; the PCI core should not change device resources while a driver is managing the device. Remove pci_bus_add_devices() from pci_scan_root_bus() and do it after any resource assignment in the callers. Note that ARM's pci_common_init_dev() already called pci_bus_add_devices() after pci_scan_root_bus(), so we only need to remove the first call: pci_common_init_dev pcibios_init_hw pci_scan_root_bus pci_bus_add_devices # first call pci_bus_assign_resources pci_bus_add_devices # second call [bhelgaas: changelog, drop "root_bus" var in alpha common_init_pci(), return failure earlier in mn10300, add "return" in x86 pcibios_scan_root(), return early if xtensa platform_pcibios_fixup() fails] Signed-off-by: Yijing Wang <wangyijing@huawei.com> Signed-off-by: Bjorn Helgaas <bhelgaas@google.com> CC: Richard Henderson <rth@twiddle.net> CC: Ivan Kokshaysky <ink@jurassic.park.msu.ru> CC: Matt Turner <mattst88@gmail.com> CC: David Howells <dhowells@redhat.com> CC: Tony Luck <tony.luck@intel.com> CC: Michal Simek <monstr@monstr.eu> CC: Ralf Baechle <ralf@linux-mips.org> CC: Koichi Yasutake <yasutake.koichi@jp.panasonic.com> CC: Sebastian Ott <sebott@linux.vnet.ibm.com> CC: "David S. mm: add missing __PAGETABLE_{PUD,PMD}_FOLDED defines
Core mm expects __PAGETABLE_{PUD,PMD}_FOLDED to be defined if these page table levels folded. Usually, these defines are provided by <asm-generic/pgtable-nopmd.h> and <asm-generic/pgtable-nopud.h>. But some architectures fold page table levels in a custom way. They need to define these macros themself. This patch adds missing defines. The patch fixes mm->nr_pmds underflow and eliminates dead __pmd_alloc() and __pud_alloc() on architectures without these page table levels. Signed-off-by: Kirill A. all arches, signal: move restart_block to struct task_struct
If an attacker can cause a controlled kernel stack overflow, overwriting the restart block is a very juicy exploit target. This is because the restart_block is held in the same memory allocation as the kernel stack. Moving the restart block to struct task_struct prevents this exploit by making the restart_block harder to locate. Note that there are other fields in thread_info that are also easy targets, at least on some architectures. It's also a decent simplification, since the restart code is more or less identical on all architectures. Merge branch 'akpm' (patches from Andrew)
Merge misc updates from Andrew Morton: "Bite-sized chunks this time, to avoid the MTA ratelimiting woes. - fs/notify updates - ocfs2 - some of MM" That laconic "some MM" is mainly the removal of remap_file_pages(), which is a big simplification of the VM, and which gets rid of a *lot* of random cruft and special cases because we no longer support the non-linear mappings that it used. From a user interface perspective, nothing has changed, because the remap_file_pages() syscall still exists, it's just done by emulating the old behavior by creating a lot of individual small mappings instead of one non-linear one. The emulation is slower than the old "native" non-linear mappings, but nobody really uses or cares about remap_file_pages(), and simplifying the VM is a big advantage. * emailed patches from Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org>: (78 commits) memcg: zap memcg_slab_caches and memcg_slab_mutex memcg: zap memcg_name argument of memcg_create_kmem_cache memcg: zap __memcg_{charge,uncharge}_slab mm/page_alloc.c: place zone_id check before VM_BUG_ON_PAGE check mm: hugetlb: fix type of hugetlb_treat_as_movable variable mm, hugetlb: remove unnecessary lower bound on sysctl handlers"? mm: memory: merge shared-writable dirtying branches in do_wp_page() mm: memory: remove ->vm_file check on shared writable vmas xtensa: drop _PAGE_FILE and pte_file()-related helpers x86: drop _PAGE_FILE and pte_file()-related helpers unicore32: drop pte_file()-related helpers um: drop _PAGE_FILE and pte_file()-related helpers tile: drop pte_file()-related helpers sparc: drop pte_file()-related helpers sh: drop _PAGE_FILE and pte_file()-related helpers score: drop _PAGE_FILE and pte_file()-related helpers s390: drop pte_file()-related helpers parisc: drop _PAGE_FILE and pte_file()-related helpers openrisc: drop _PAGE_FILE and pte_file()-related helpers nios2: drop _PAGE_FILE and pte_file()-related helpers ... |

vm: add VM_FAULT_SIGSEGV handling support
The core VM already knows about VM_FAULT_SIGBUS, but cannot return a
"you should SIGSEGV" error, because the SIGSEGV case was generally
handled by the caller - usually the architecture fault handler.
That results in lots of duplication - all the architecture fault
handlers end up doing very similar "look up vma, check permissions, do
retries etc" - but it generally works. However, there are cases where
the VM actually wants to SIGSEGV, and applications _expect_ SIGSEGV.
In particular, when accessing the stack guard page, libsigsegv expects a
SIGSEGV. And it usually got one, because the stack growth is handled by
that duplicated architecture fault handler.
However, when the generic VM layer started propagating the error return
from the stack expansion in commit

Thanks to Al Viro and Herbert Xu. 3) A set of new netlink interfaces for the TIPC stack, from Richard Alpe. 4) Remove unnecessary looping during ipv6 routing lookups, from Martin KaFai Lau. 5) Add PAUSE frame generation support to gianfar driver, from Matei Pavaluca. 6) Allow for larger reordering levels in TCP, which are easily achievable in the real world right now, from Eric Dumazet. 7) Add a variable of napi_schedule that doesn't need to disable cpu interrupts, from Eric Dumazet. 8) Use a doubly linked list to optimize neigh_parms_release(), from Nicolas Dichtel. 9) Various enhancements to the kernel BPF verifier, and allow eBPF programs to actually be attached to sockets. From Alexei Starovoitov. 10) Support TSO/LSO in sunvnet driver, from David L Stevens. 11) Allow controlling ECN usage via routing metrics, from Florian Westphal. 12) Remote checksum offload, from Tom Herbert. 13) Add split-header receive, BQL, and xmit_more support to amd-xgbe driver, from Thomas Lendacky. 14) Add MPLS support to openvswitch, from Simon Horman. 15) Support wildcard tunnel endpoints in ipv6 tunnels, from Steffen Klassert. 16) Do gro flushes on a per-device basis using a timer, from Eric Dumazet. This tries to resolve the conflicting goals between the desired handling of bulk vs. RPC-like traffic. 17) Allow userspace to ask for the CPU upon what a packet was received/steered, via SO_INCOMING_CPU. From Eric Dumazet. 18) Limit GSO packets to half the current congestion window, from Eric Dumazet. 19) Add a generic helper so that all drivers set their RSS keys in a consistent way, from Eric Dumazet. 20) Add xmit_more support to enic driver, from Govindarajulu Varadarajan. 21) Add VLAN packet scheduler action, from Jiri Pirko. 22) Support configurable RSS hash functions via ethtool, from Eyal Perry. * git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/davem/net-next: (1820 commits) Fix race condition between vxlan_sock_add and vxlan_sock_release net/macb: fix compilation warning for print_hex_dump() called with skb->mac_header net/mlx4: Add support for A0 steering net/mlx4: Refactor QUERY_PORT net/mlx4_core: Add explicit error message when rule doesn't meet configuration net/mlx4: Add A0 hybrid steering net/mlx4: Add mlx4_bitmap zone allocator net/mlx4: Add a check if there are too many reserved QPs net/mlx4: Change QP allocation scheme net/mlx4_core: Use tasklet for user-space CQ completion events net/mlx4_core: Mask out host side virtualization features for guests net/mlx4_en: Set csum level for encapsulated packets be2net: Export tunnel offloads only when a VxLAN tunnel is created gianfar: Fix dma check map error when DMA_API_DEBUG is enabled cxgb4/csiostor: Don't use MASTER_MUST for fw_hello call net: fec: only enable mdio interrupt before phy device link up net: fec: clear all interrupt events to support i.MX6SX net: fec: reset fep link status in suspend function net: sock: fix access via invalid file descriptor net: introduce helper macro for_each_cmsghdr ... |

net: sock: allow eBPF programs to be attached to sockets
introduce new setsockopt() command: setsockopt(sock, SOL_SOCKET, SO_ATTACH_BPF, &prog_fd, sizeof(prog_fd)) where prog_fd was received from syscall bpf(BPF_PROG_LOAD, attr, ...) and attr->prog_type == BPF_PROG_TYPE_SOCKET_FILTER setsockopt() calls bpf_prog_get() which increments refcnt of the program, so it doesn't get unloaded while socket is using the program. The same eBPF program can be attached to multiple sockets. User task exit automatically closes socket which calls sk_filter_uncharge() which decrements refcnt of eBPF program Signed-off-by: Alexei Starovoitov <ast@plumgrid.com> Signed-off-by: David S. net: introduce SO_INCOMING_CPU
Alternative to RPS/RFS is to use hardware support for multiple queues. Then split a set of million of sockets into worker threads, each one using epoll() to manage events on its own socket pool. Ideally, we want one thread per RX/TX queue/cpu, but we have no way to know after accept() or connect() on which queue/cpu a socket is managed. We normally use one cpu per RX queue (IRQ smp_affinity being properly set), so remembering on socket structure which cpu delivered last packet is enough to solve the problem. After accept(), connect(), or even file descriptor passing around processes, applications can use : int cpu; socklen_t len = sizeof(cpu); getsockopt(fd, SOL_SOCKET, SO_INCOMING_CPU, &cpu, &len); And use this information to put the socket into the right silo for optimal performance, as all networking stack should run on the appropriate cpu, without need to send IPI (RPS/RFS). arch: Clean up asm/barrier.h implementations using asm-generic/barrier.h
We're going to be adding a few new barrier primitives, and in order to avoid endless duplication make more agressive use of asm-generic/barrier.h. Change the asm-generic/barrier.h such that it allows partial barrier definitions and fills out the rest with defaults. There are a few architectures (m32r, m68k) that could probably do away with their barrier.h file entirely but are kept for now due to their unconventional nop() implementation.
