In DMA support, The received data is not pushed to tty until the DMA buffer
is filled. But some megabyte rate chips such as BT expect fast response and
data should be pushed immediately. In order to fix this issue, We suggest
the use of the timer for polling DMA buffer.
In our test, no data loss occurred at high-baudrate as compared with interrupt-
driven (We tested with 3Mbps).
We changes:
- We add timer for polling. If we set poll_timer to 10, every 10ms,
timer handler checks the residue in the dma buffer and transfer data
to the tty. Also, last_residue is updated for the next polling.
- poll_timeout is used to prevent the timer's system cost.
If poll_timeout is set to 3000 and no data is received in 3 seconds,
we inactivate poll timer and driver falls back to interrupt-driven.
When data is received again in FIFO and UART irq is occurred, we switch
back to DMA mode and start polling.
- We use consistent DMA mappings to avoid from the frequent cache operation
of the timer function for default.
- pl011_dma_rx_chars is modified. the pending size is recalculated because
data can be taken by polling.
- the polling time is adjusted if dma rx poll is enabled but no rate is
specified. Ideal polling interval to push 1 character at every interval
is the reciprocal of 'baud rate / 10 line bits per character / 1000 ms
per sec'. But It is very aggressive to system. Experimentally,
'10000000 / baud' is suitable to receive dozens of characters. the poll rate
can be specified statically by dma_rx_poll_rate of the platform data as well.

The no_console_suspend option allows the console to write to the UART
during early resume, before the serial port itself is resumed. Such
writes hang indefinitely waiting for TX ready.
This adds a check to the console putchar function to drop characters
instead of hanging if the port hasn't been initialized. That way, we
can use no_console_suspend without risk of hanging.

This closes a window where the system may hang in resume as soon as the
UART interrupt is enabled and before the mask is restored. The hang occurs
because the driver can't handle IRQs it thinks are masked.

Since the interrupt mask register is not preserved across system suspend
and it defaults to all interrupts enabled, it is not enough to disable
UART interrupt.
This patch adds free_irq to port shutdown and mask setting to port
startup to handle IRQ disabling in a suspend-friendly way. In addition,
a bug caused by multiple request_irq calls in port startup callback is
fixed.

The big thing here is the fix for the huge mess we caused renaming the 8250
driver accidentally in the 3.7 kernel release, without realizing that there
were users of the module options that suddenly broke. This is now resolved,
and, to top the injury off, we have a backwards-compatible option for those
users who got used to the new name since 3.7. Ugh, sorry about that.
Other than that, some other minor fixes for issues that have been reported by
users.

Consider a situation where I have an ARM based system
and therefore no legacy ports. Say, I have two
memory-mapped ports. I use device tree to describe the
ports. What would be the config options I set so that
I get only the two ports in my system? I do not want
legacy ports being created automatically and I want
it to be flexible enough that it creates the devices
based only on the device tree. I expected setting
SERIAL_8250_RUNTIME_UARTS = 0 to work because the
description said, "Set this to the maximum number of
serial ports you want the kernel to register at boot
time." Unfortunately, even though SERIAL_8250_NR_UARTS
was set to the default value of 4, I did not get any device
nodes (because SERIAL_8250_RUNTIME_UARTS was 0). This
is what this change is addressing.
SERIAL_8250_NR_UARTS controls the maximum number of ports
you can support. SERIAL_8250_RUNTIME_UARTS specifies the
number of ports you want to create automatically for legacy
ports at boot time. All other ports will be created
when serial8250_register_port is called (and if does not exceed
the total number of supported ports as specified by
SERIAL_8250_NR_UARTS).

The Boot ROM has an issue which will cause the driver to
lock up as pending irqs are not being cleared. With them
cleared it prevents that issue.
This patch is needed for the current (3.9-rc3) mainline kernel. I guess
it went unnoticed, because it was only tested with u-boot up until now.
And u-boot maybe handles this.

In 3.7 the 8250 module name was changed unintentionally from 8250 to
8250_core by commit 835d844d1a
(8250_pnp: do pnp probe before legacy probe). We then had to
re-introduce the old module options to ensure the old good
8250.nr_uart & co. still work. This can be done only by a very dirty
hack and we did it in f2b8dfd9e4
(serial: 8250: Keep 8250.<xxxx> module options functional after driver
rename).
That is so damn ugly so that I decided to revert to the old module
name and deprecate the new 8250_core options present in 3.7 and 3.8
only. The deprecation will happen in the following patch.
Note that this patch changes the hack above to support "8250_core.*",
because we now have "8250.*" natively.

introduced a potential NULL dereference to some drivers. In
particular, when the device is used as a console, incoming bytes can
kill the box. This is caused by removed checks for TTY against NULL.
It happened because it was unclear to me why the checks were there. I
assumed them superfluous because the interrupts were unbound or
otherwise stopped. But this is not the case for consoles for these
drivers, as was pointed out by David Miller.
Now, this patch re-introduces the checks (at this point we check
port->state, not the tty proper, as we do not care about tty pointers
anymore). For both of the drivers, we place the check below the
handling of break signal so that sysrq can actually work. (One needs
to issue a break and then sysrq key within the following 5 seconds.)
We do not change sc26xx, sunhv, and sunsu here because they behave the
same as before. People having that hardware should fix the driver
eventually, however. They always could unconditionally dereference tty
in receive_chars, port->state in uart_handle_dcd_change, and
up->port.state->port.tty.
There is perhaps more to fix in all those drivers, but they are at
least in a state they were before.

The ifx6x60 driver implements both legacy suspend/resume callbacks and
dev_pm_ops. The SPI core is going to ignore legacy suspend/resume
callbacks if a driver implements dev_pm_ops. Since the legacy suspend/resume
callbacks are empty in this case it is safe to just remove them.

First, remove STD_FLAGS as the value, or its subvalues
(ASYNC_BOOT_AUTOCONF | ASYNC_SKIP_TEST) is not tested anywhere --
there is no point to initialize flags to that. Second, use flags
member from tty_port when we have it now. So that we do not waste
space.

port_get, hangup, kref_put. Now the only thing needed is to call
tty_port_tty_hangup which does exactly that. And they can also decide
whether to consider CLOCAL or completely ignore that.

tty_port_tty_wakeup which does exactly that.
One exception is ifx6x60 where tty_wakeup was open-coded. We now call

The code in 8250.c for detecting ARM/XScale UARTs says:
* Try writing and reading the UART_IER_UUE bit (b6).
* If it works, this is probably one of the Xscale platform's
* internal UARTs.
If the above passes, it then goes on to:
* It's an Xscale.
* We'll leave the UART_IER_UUE bit set to 1 (enabled).
However, the CH352 uses the UART_IER_UUE as the LOWPOWER function,
so it is readable and writable. According to the datasheet:
"LOWPOWER:When the bit is 1, close the internal benchmark
clock of serial port to set into low-power status.
So it essentially gets mis-detected as Xscale, and gets
powered down in the process. The device in question where
this was seen is listed by lspci as:
Serial controller: Device 4348:3253 (rev 10) (prog-if 02 [16550])
Re-using the 353 quirk which just sets flags to fixed and type
to 16550 is suitable for fixing the 352 as well.

With the new OF DMA binding, it is possible to completely avoid the
need for platform_data for configuring a DMA channel. In cases where the
platform has already been converted, calling dma_request_slave_channel
should get all the necessary information from the device tree.
This also adds a binding document specific to the pl011 controller,
and extends the generic primecell binding to mention "dmas" and other
common properties.
Like the patch that converts the dw_dma controller, this is completely
untested and is looking for someone to try it out.

The Kconfig symbol SERIAL_S3C2412 got removed in commit
da121506eb ("serial: samsung: merge
probe() function from all SoC specific extensions"). But it also added a
last reference to that symbol. The commit and the tree make clear that
CPU_S3C2412 should have been used instead.

With commit 835d844d1 (8250_pnp: do pnp probe before legacy probe), the
8250 driver was renamed to 8250_core. This means any existing usage of
the 8259.<xxxx> module parameters or as a kernel command line switch is
now broken, as the 8250_core driver doesn't parse options belonging to
something called "8250".
To solve this, we redefine the module options in a dummy function using
a redefined MODULE_PARAM_PREFX when built into the kernel. In the case
where we're building as a module, we provide an alias to the old 8250
name. The dummy function prevents compiler errors due to global variable
redefinitions that happen as part of the module_param_ macro expansions.

The InsydeH2O BIOS (version dated 09/12/2011) has the following in
its pnp resouces for its serial ports:
$ cat /sys/bus/pnp/devices/00:0b/resources
state = active
io disabled
irq disabled
We do not check if the resources are disabled, and create a bogus
ttyS* device. Since commit 835d844d1a (8250_pnp: do pnp probe
before legacy probe) we get a bogus ttyS0, which prevents the legacy
probe from detecting it.
Note, the BIOS can also be upgraded, fixing this problem, but for people
who can't do that, this fix is needed.

I've managed to find an 8 port version of the card 4 port card which was discussed here:

Looking back at that thread there were two issues in the original patch.
1) The I/O ports for the UARTs are within BAR2 not BAR0. This can been seen in the original post.
2) A serial quirk isn't needed as these cards have no memory in BAR0 which makes pci_plx9050_init just return.
This patch fixes the 4 port support to use BAR2, removes the bogus quirk and adds support for the 8 port card.

Remove the extra code left over when the serial driver was changed
to require a clock. There is no fallback to 24Mhz as a clock is
now required.

mpc512x platform clock code names PSC clocks as "pscX_mclk" but
the driver tries to get "pscX_clk" clock and this results in
errors like:
mpc52xx-psc-uart 80011700.psc: Failed to get PSC clock entry!
The problem appears when opening ttyPSC devices other than the
system's serial console. Since getting and enabling the PSC clock
fails, uart port startup doesn't succeed and tty flag TTY_IO_ERROR
remains set causing further errors in tty ioctls, i.e.
'strace stty -F /dev/ttyPSC1' shows:

commit 9ec1882df2 (tty: serial: imx: console write routing is unsafe
on SMP) introduced a recursive locking bug in imx_console_write().
The callchain is:

The bad news is that the kernel debugging facilities can dectect the
problem, but the printks never surface on the serial console for
obvious reasons.
There is a similar issue with oops_in_progress. If the kernel crashes
we really don't want to be stuck on the lock and unable to tell what
happened.
In general most UP originated drivers miss these checks and nobody
ever notices because CONFIG_PROVE_LOCKING seems to be still ignored by
a large number of developers.
The solution is to avoid locking in the sysrq case and trylock in the
oops_in_progress case.
This scheme is used in other drivers as well and it would be nice if
we could move this to a common place, so the usual copy/paste/modify
bugs can be avoided.
Now there is another issue with this scheme:

if (port->sysrq)
avoid locking
port->sysrq is reset with the next receive character. So as long as
the port->sysrq is not reset and this can take an endless amount of
time if after the break no futher receive character follows, all
console writes happen unlocked.
While the current writer is protected against other console writers by
the console sem, it's unprotected against open/close or other
operations which fiddle with the port. That's what the above mentioned
commit tried to solve.
That's an issue in all drivers which use that scheme and unfortunately
there is no easy workaround. The only solution is to have a separate
indicator port->sysrq_cpu. uart_handle_sysrq_char() then sets it to
smp_processor_id() before calling into handle_sysrq() and resets it to
-1 after that. Then change the locking check to:

That would force all other cpus into the spin_lock path. Problem
solved, but that's way beyond the scope of this fix and really wants
to be implemented in a common function which calls the uart specific
write function to avoid another gazillion of hard to debug
copy/paste/modify bugs.

hardpps() functionality is provided through the N_PPS line
discipline now. The new function signature was added in commit
025b40ab (2011-01-12). There was no previous macro or
function hardpps(), at least since before the initial commit of
v2.6.12 in 2005. It's unlikely this code has been compiled since.

The PPS (Pulse-Per-Second) line discipline has developed a number of
unhealthy attachments to core tty data and functions, ultimately leading
to its breakage.
The previous patches fixed the crashing. This one reduces coupling further
by eliminating the timestamp parameter from the dcd_change ldisc method.
This reduces header file linkage and makes the extension more generic,
and the timestamp read is delayed only slightly, from just before the
ldisc->ops->dcd_change method call to just after.

Original configuration of Rx FIFO threshold contained an error
that resulted Rx threshold to be effectively set to 1 character
instead of 16 characters, as noted in comments.
Checking LSR to contain UART_LSR_THRE bit set caused issue when
not all UART_IER_THRI interrupts have been properly handled.
This caused gap in Tx data, visible on high baud rates using
oscilloscope.
Setting OMAP_UART_SCR_TX_EMPTY bit in SCR caused UART_IER_THRI
interrupt to be raised only when Tx FIFO and Tx shift registers
are empty.

Tegra is only booted through device-tree now; there are no board files
left that use this function. Hence, don't export it. Move the static
inline definition into of_serial.c, so we can delete of_serial.h too.

There's no reason kgdb.h itself needs to include the 8250 serial port
header file. So push it down to the _very_ limited number of individual
drivers that need the values in that file, and fix up the places where
people really wanted serial_core.h and platform_device.h.

The MIPS based Ralink WiSoC platform has 1 or more 8250 compatible serial cores.
To make them work we require the same quirks that are used by AU1x00.

Add support for later SUNIX (TIMEDIA) Universal PCI Single and Multi-Port
Communications Boards.
These boards have PCI Vendor ID 1fd4 with device ID 1999 but otherwise
appear to be the same as the TIMEDIA boards already supported by 8250_pci
and parport_serial.
Tested with:
a. the two port serial board part number SER5037A,
b. the two port serial and one port parallel board part number
MIO5079A.

When PCH_UART_CONSOLE and SERIAL_CORE_CONSOLE is not set neither, the
uart_port will have no 'sysrq' member hence their will need a '#ifdef'
in pch_uart.c to handle the case, otherwise we'll see compile error
like this:

Convert all uses of devm_request_and_ioremap() to the newly introduced
devm_ioremap_resource() which provides more consistent error handling.
devm_ioremap_resource() provides its own error messages so all explicit
error messages can be removed from the failure code paths.

There is no need to memset 0 to SPI frame memory before preparing
transfer frame bits, because SPI frame header are encoded with valid
data size, so don't need to worry about adopting dirty bits, more,
memset zero for each SPI frame may impact the spi throughput efficiency.

This patch adds a hardware reset the break and overflow bits for
these events. Without resetting the bits they will be reported to
the core every time, when once occur.

When send break to the uart port, we always get 'frame error', but we
can not just reset receive fifo in such case, otherwise the sysrq cmd
will not be received correctly.
When we handle sysrq output via pch_console_write, the priv lock has
already been taken so no need to take the lock in pch_console_write.

When we use pch_uart as system console like 'console=ttyPCH0,115200',
then 'send break' to it. We'll encounter the deadlock on a cpu/core,
with interrupts disabled on the core. When we happen to have all irqs
affinity to cpu0 then the deadlock on cpu0 actually deadlock whole
system.
In pch_uart_interrupt, we have spin_lock_irqsave(&priv->lock, flags)
then call pch_uart_err_ir when break is received. Then the call to
dev_err would actually call to pch_console_write then we'll run into
another spin_lock(&priv->lock), with interrupts disabled.
So in the call sequence lead by pch_uart_interrupt, we should be
carefully to call functions that will 'print message to console' only
in case the uart port is not being used as serial console.

The option allows you to remove TTY and compile without errors. This
saves space on systems that won't support TTY interfaces anyway.
bloat-o-meter output is below.
The bulk of this patch consists of Kconfig changes adding "depends on
TTY" to various serial devices and similar drivers that require the TTY
layer. Ideally, these dependencies would occur on a common intermediate
symbol such as SERIO, but most drivers "select SERIO" rather than
"depends on SERIO", and "select" does not respect dependencies.
bloat-o-meter output comparing our previous minimal to new minimal by
removing TTY. The list is filtered to not show removed entries with awk
'$3 != "-"' as the list was very long.

A duplicate definition of the port variable was introduced in the
interrupt handler, which causes the build to break. The fix is to
rename the variable to tport, which is already properly used in
subsequent code.

Convert the last memory allocation (vt8500_port) to use devm_kzalloc
and remove the fail path cleanup code from vt8500_serial_probe.
Reorder iomem mapping above clk_enable to simplify fail code. The
clock is only enabled if all other resources are available.
