Lift length capping into the few callers that care about it. Most of
them treat all non-negatives as "success" and ignore the capped value,
and with good reasons.
Make rw_verify_area() return 0 on success.

This adds a flag that tells the file system that this is a high priority
request for which it's worth to poll the hardware. The flag is purely
advisory and can be ignored if not supported.

This way we can set kiocb flags also from the sync read/write path for
the read_iter/write_iter operations. For now there is no way to pass
flags to plain read/write operations as there is no real need for that,
and all flags passed are explicitly rejected for these files.

The user-visible impact of the issue is for example that without this
patch sensors-detect breaks when trying to seek in /dev/cpu/0/cpuid.
'~0ULL' is a 'unsigned long long' that when converted to a loff_t,
which is signed, gets turned into -1. later in vfs_setpos we have
'if (offset > maxsize)', which makes it always return EINVAL.

inode_foo(inode) being mutex_foo(&inode->i_mutex).
Please, use those for access to ->i_mutex; over the coming cycle
->i_mutex will become rwsem, with ->lookup() done with it held
only shared.

Pull misc vfs updates from Al Viro:
"All kinds of stuff. That probably should've been 5 or 6 separate
branches, but by the time I'd realized how large and mixed that bag
had become it had been too close to -final to play with rebasing.
Some fs/namei.c cleanups there, memdup_user_nul() introduction and
switching open-coded instances, burying long-dead code, whack-a-mole
of various kinds, several new helpers for ->llseek(), assorted
cleanups and fixes from various people, etc.
One piece probably deserves special mention - Neil's
lookup_one_len_unlocked(). Similar to lookup_one_len(), but gets
called without ->i_mutex and tries to avoid ever taking it. That, of
course, means that it's not useful for any directory modifications,
but things like getting inode attributes in nfds readdirplus are fine
with that. I really should've asked for moratorium on lookup-related
changes this cycle, but since I hadn't done that early enough... I
*am* asking for that for the coming cycle, though - I'm going to try
and get conversion of i_mutex to rwsem with ->lookup() done under lock
taken shared.
There will be a patch closer to the end of the window, along the lines
of the one Linus had posted last May - mechanical conversion of
->i_mutex accesses to inode_lock()/inode_unlock()/inode_trylock()/
inode_is_locked()/inode_lock_nested(). To quote Linus back then:

The btrfs clone ioctls are now adopted by other file systems, with NFS
and CIFS already having support for them, and XFS being under active
development. To avoid growth of various slightly incompatible
implementations, add one to the VFS. Note that clones are different from
file copies in several ways:
- they are atomic vs other writers
- they support whole file clones
- they support 64-bit legth clones
- they do not allow partial success (aka short writes)
- clones are expected to be a fast metadata operation
Because of that it would be rather cumbersome to try to piggyback them on
top of the recent clone_file_range infrastructure. The converse isn't
true and the clone_file_range system call could try clone file range as
a first attempt to copy, something that further patches will enable.

Pass a loff_t end for the last byte instead of the 32-bit count
parameter to allow full file clones even on 32-bit architectures.

This allows us to have an in-kernel copy mechanism that avoids frequent
switches between kernel and user space. This is especially useful so
NFSD can support server-side copies.
The default (flags=0) means to first attempt copy acceleration, but use
the pagecache if that fails.

Add a copy_file_range() system call for offloading copies between
regular files.
This gives an interface to underlying layers of the storage stack which
can copy without reading and writing all the data. There are a few
candidates that should support copy offloading in the nearer term:
- btrfs shares extent references with its clone ioctl
- NFS has patches to add a COPY command which copies on the server
- SCSI has a family of XCOPY commands which copy in the device
This system call avoids the complexity of also accelerating the creation
of the destination file by operating on an existing destination file
descriptor, not a path.
Currently the high level vfs entry point limits copy offloading to files
on the same mount and super (and not in the same file). This can be
relaxed if we get implementations which can copy between file systems
safely.

all remaining instances of aio_{read,write} (all 4 of them) have explicit
->read and ->write resp.; do_sync_read/do_sync_write is never called by
__vfs_read/__vfs_write anymore and no other users had been left.

All places outside of core VFS that checked ->read and ->write for being NULL or
called the methods directly are gone now, so NULL {read,write} with non-NULL
{read,write}_iter will do the right thing in all cases.

The AIO interface is fairly complex because it tries to allow
filesystems to always work async and then wakeup a synchronous
caller through aio_complete. It turns out that basically no one
was doing this to avoid the complexity and context switches,
and we've already fixed up the remaining users and can now
get rid of this case.

integrity_kernel_read() duplicates the file read operations code
in vfs_read(). This patch refactors vfs_read() code creating a
helper function __vfs_read(). It is used by both vfs_read() and
integrity_kernel_read().

Beginning to introduce those. Just the callers for now, and it's
clumsier than it'll eventually become; once we finish converting
aio_read and aio_write instances, the things will get nicer.
For now, these guys are in parallel to ->aio_read() and ->aio_write();
they take iocb and iov_iter, with everything in iov_iter already
validated. File offset is passed in iocb->ki_pos, iov/nr_segs -
in iov_iter.
Main concerns in that series are stack footprint and ability to
split the damn thing cleanly.

Since we are about to introduce new methods (read_iter/write_iter), the
tests in a bunch of places would have to grow inconveniently. Check
once (at open() time) and store results in ->f_mode as FMODE_CAN_READ
and FMODE_CAN_WRITE resp. It might end up being a temporary measure -
once everything switches from ->aio_{read,write} to ->{read,write}_iter
it might make sense to return to open-coded checks. We'll see...

Pull s390 compat wrapper rework from Heiko Carstens:
"S390 compat system call wrapper simplification work.
The intention of this work is to get rid of all hand written assembly
compat system call wrappers on s390, which perform proper sign or zero
extension, or pointer conversion of compat system call parameters.
Instead all of this should be done with C code eg by using Al's
COMPAT_SYSCALL_DEFINEx() macro.
Therefore all common code and s390 specific compat system calls have
been converted to the COMPAT_SYSCALL_DEFINEx() macro.
In order to generate correct code all compat system calls may only
have eg compat_ulong_t parameters, but no unsigned long parameters.
Those patches which change parameter types from unsigned long to
compat_ulong_t parameters are separate in this series, but shouldn't
cause any harm.
The only compat system calls which intentionally have 64 bit
parameters (preadv64 and pwritev64) in support of the x86/32 ABI
haven't been changed, but are now only available if an architecture
defines __ARCH_WANT_COMPAT_SYS_PREADV64/PWRITEV64.
System calls which do not have a compat variant but still need proper
zero extension on s390, like eg "long sys_brk(unsigned long brk)" will
get a proper wrapper function with the new s390 specific
COMPAT_SYSCALL_WRAPx() macro:

which generates the following code (simplified):

Given that the C file which contains all the COMPAT_SYSCALL_WRAP lines
includes both linux/syscall.h and linux/compat.h, it will generate
build errors, if the declaration of sys_brk() doesn't match, or if
there exists a non-matching compat_sys_brk() declaration.
In addition this will intentionally result in a link error if
somewhere else a compat_sys_brk() function exists, which probably
should have been used instead. Two more BUILD_BUG_ONs make sure the
size and type of each compat syscall parameter can be handled
correctly with the s390 specific macros.
I converted the compat system calls step by step to verify the
generated code is correct and matches the previous code. In fact it
did not always match, however that was always a bug in the hand
written asm code.
In result we get less code, less bugs, and much more sanity checking"

Our write() system call has always been atomic in the sense that you get
the expected thread-safe contiguous write, but we haven't actually
guaranteed that concurrent writes are serialized wrt f_pos accesses, so
threads (or processes) that share a file descriptor and use "write()"
concurrently would quite likely overwrite each others data.
This violates POSIX.1-2008/SUSv4 Section XSI 2.9.7 that says:
"2.9.7 Thread Interactions with Regular File Operations
All of the following functions shall be atomic with respect to each
other in the effects specified in POSIX.1-2008 when they operate on
regular files or symbolic links: [...]"
and one of the effects is the file position update.
This unprotected file position behavior is not new behavior, and nobody
has ever cared. Until now. Yongzhi Pan reported unexpected behavior to
Michael Kerrisk that was due to this.
This resolves the issue with a f_pos-specific lock that is taken by
read/write/lseek on file descriptors that may be shared across threads
or processes.

The preadv64/pwrite64 have been implemented for the x32 ABI, in order
to allow passing 64 bit arguments from user space without splitting
them into two 32 bit parameters, like it would be necessary for usual
compat tasks.
Howevert these two system calls are only being used for the x32 ABI,
so add __ARCH_WANT_COMPAT defines for these two compat syscalls and
make these two only visible for x86.

We got a report that the pwritev syscall does not work correctly in
compat mode on s390.
It turned out that with commit 72ec35163f ("switch compat readv/writev
variants to COMPAT_SYSCALL_DEFINE") we lost the zero extension of a
couple of syscall parameters because the some parameter types haven't
been converted from unsigned long to compat_ulong_t.
This is needed for architectures where the ABI requires that the caller
of a function performed zero and/or sign extension to 64 bit of all
parameters.

The compat_do_readv_writev() function was doing a verify_area on the
incoming iov, but the nr_segs value is not checked. If someone passes
in a -1 for nr_segs, for instance, the function should return an EINVAL.
However, it returns a EFAULT because the verify_area fails because it is
checking an array of size MAX_UINT. The check is bogus, anyway, because
the next check, compat_rw_copy_check_uvector(), will do all the
necessary checking, anyway. The non-compat do_readv_writev() function
doesn't do this check, so I think it's safe to just remove the code.

This code doesn't serve any purpose anymore, since the aio retry
infrastructure has been removed.
This change should be safe because aio_read/write are also used for
synchronous IO, and called from do_sync_read()/do_sync_write() - and
there's no looping done in the sync case (the read and write syscalls).

For those file systems(btrfs/ext4/ocfs2/tmpfs) that support
SEEK_DATA/SEEK_HOLE functions, we end up handling the similar
matter in lseek_execute() to update the current file offset
to the desired offset if it is valid, ceph also does the
simliar things at ceph_llseek().
To reduce the duplications, this patch make lseek_execute()

This removes the retry-based AIO infrastructure now that nothing in tree
is using it.
We want to remove retry-based AIO because it is fundemantally unsafe.
It retries IO submission from a kernel thread that has only assumed the
mm of the submitting task. All other task_struct references in the IO
submission path will see the kernel thread, not the submitting task.
This design flaw means that nothing of any meaningful complexity can use
retry-based AIO.
This removes all the code and data associated with the retry machinery.
The most significant benefit of this is the removal of the locking
around the unused run list in the submission path.

Commit 06ae43f34b ("Don't bother with redoing rw_verify_area() from
default_file_splice_from()") lost the checks to test existence of the
write/aio_write methods. My apologies ;-/
Eventually, we want that in fs/splice.c side of things (no point
repeating it for every buffer, after all), but for now this is the
obvious minimal fix.

default_file_splice_from() ends up calling vfs_write() (via very convoluted
callchain). It's an overkill, since we already have done rw_verify_area()
in the caller by the time we call vfs_write() we are under set_fs(KERNEL_DS),
so access_ok() is also pointless. Add a new helper (__kernel_write()),
use it instead of kernel_write() in there.

This function is used by sparc, powerpc and arm64 for compat support.
The patch adds a generic implementation which calls do_sendfile()
directly and avoids set_fs().
The sparc architecture has wrappers for the sign extensions while
powerpc relies on the compiler to do the this. The patch adds wrappers
for powerpc to handle the u32->int type conversion.
compat_sys_sendfile64() can be replaced by a sys_sendfile() call since
compat_loff_t has the same size as off_t on a 64-bit system.
On powerpc, the patch also changes the 64-bit sendfile call from
sys_sendile64 to sys_sendfile.

For ext3/4 htree directories, using the vfs llseek function with
SEEK_END goes to i_size like for any other file, but in reality
we want the maximum possible hash value. Recent changes
in ext4 have cut & pasted generic_file_llseek() back into fs/ext4/dir.c,
but replicating this core code seems like a bad idea, especially
since the copy has already diverged from the vfs.
This patch updates generic_file_llseek_size to accept
both a custom maximum offset, and a custom EOF position. With this
in place, ext4_dir_llseek can pass in the appropriate maximum hash
position for both maxsize and eof, and get what it wants.
As far as I know, this does not fix any bugs - nfs in the kernel
doesn't use SEEK_END, and I don't know of any user who does. But
some ext4 folks seem keen on doing the right thing here, and I can't
really argue.

A cleanup of rw_copy_check_uvector and compat_rw_copy_check_uvector after
changes made to support CMA in an earlier patch.
Rather than having an additional check_access parameter to these
functions, the first paramater type is overloaded to allow the caller to
specify CHECK_IOVEC_ONLY which means check that the contents of the iovec
are valid, but do not check the memory that they point to. This is used
by process_vm_readv/writev where we need to validate that a iovec passed
to the syscall is valid but do not want to check the memory that it points
to at this point because it refers to an address space in another process.

them onto including export.h -- or if the file isn't even
using those, then just delete the include. Fix up any implicit
include dependencies that were being masked by module.h along

The basic idea behind cross memory attach is to allow MPI programs doing
intra-node communication to do a single copy of the message rather than a
double copy of the message via shared memory.
The following patch attempts to achieve this by allowing a destination
process, given an address and size from a source process, to copy memory
directly from the source process into its own address space via a system
call. There is also a symmetrical ability to copy from the current
process's address space into a destination process's address space.
- Use of /proc/pid/mem has been considered, but there are issues with
using it:
- Does not allow for specifying iovecs for both src and dest, assuming
preadv or pwritev was implemented either the area read from or
written to would need to be contiguous.
- Currently mem_read allows only processes who are currently
ptrace'ing the target and are still able to ptrace the target to read
from the target. This check could possibly be moved to the open call,
but its not clear exactly what race this restriction is stopping
(reason appears to have been lost)
- Having to send the fd of /proc/self/mem via SCM_RIGHTS on unix
domain socket is a bit ugly from a userspace point of view,
especially when you may have hundreds if not (eventually) thousands
of processes that all need to do this with each other
- Doesn't allow for some future use of the interface we would like to
consider adding in the future (see below)
- Interestingly reading from /proc/pid/mem currently actually
involves two copies! (But this could be fixed pretty easily)
As mentioned previously use of vmsplice instead was considered, but has
problems. Since you need the reader and writer working co-operatively if
the pipe is not drained then you block. Which requires some wrapping to
do non blocking on the send side or polling on the receive. In all to all
communication it requires ordering otherwise you can deadlock. And in the
example of many MPI tasks writing to one MPI task vmsplice serialises the
copying.
There are some cases of MPI collectives where even a single copy interface
does not get us the performance gain we could. For example in an
MPI_Reduce rather than copy the data from the source we would like to
instead use it directly in a mathops (say the reduce is doing a sum) as
this would save us doing a copy. We don't need to keep a copy of the data
from the source. I haven't implemented this, but I think this interface
could in the future do all this through the use of the flags - eg could
specify the math operation and type and the kernel rather than just
copying the data would apply the specified operation between the source
and destination and store it in the destination.
Although we don't have a "second user" of the interface (though I've had
some nibbles from people who may be interested in using it for intra
process messaging which is not MPI). This interface is something which
hardware vendors are already doing for their custom drivers to implement
fast local communication. And so in addition to this being useful for
OpenMPI it would mean the driver maintainers don't have to fix things up
when the mm changes.
There was some discussion about how much faster a true zero copy would

This has been implemented for x86 and powerpc, other architecture should
mainly (I think) just need to add syscall numbers for the process_vm_readv
and process_vm_writev. There are 32 bit compatibility versions for

Add a generic_file_llseek variant to the VFS that allows passing in
the maximum file size of the file system, instead of always
using maxbytes from the superblock.
This can be used to eliminate some cut'n'paste seek code in ext4.

The i_mutex lock use of generic _file_llseek hurts. Independent processes
accessing the same file synchronize over a single lock, even though
they have no need for synchronization at all.
Under high utilization this can cause llseek to scale very poorly on larger
systems.
This patch does some rethinking of the llseek locking model:
First the 64bit f_pos is not necessarily atomic without locks
on 32bit systems. This can already cause races with read() today.
This was discussed on linux-kernel in the past and deemed acceptable.
The patch does not change that.
Let's look at the different seek variants:
SEEK_SET: Doesn't really need any locking.
If there's a race one writer wins, the other loses.
For 32bit the non atomic update races against read()
stay the same. Without a lock they can also happen
against write() now. The read() race was deemed
acceptable in past discussions, and I think if it's
ok for read it's ok for write too.
=> Don't need a lock.
SEEK_END: This behaves like SEEK_SET plus it reads
the maximum size too. Reading the maximum size would have the
32bit atomic problem. But luckily we already have a way to read
the maximum size without locking (i_size_read), so we
can just use that instead.
Without i_mutex there is no synchronization with write() anymore,
however since the write() update is atomic on 64bit it just behaves
like another racy SEEK_SET. On non atomic 32bit it's the same
as SEEK_SET.
=> Don't need a lock, but need to use i_size_read()
SEEK_CUR: This has a read-modify-write race window
on the same file. One could argue that any application
doing unsynchronized seeks on the same file is already broken.
But for the sake of not adding a regression here I'm
using the file->f_lock to synchronize this. Using this
lock is much better than the inode mutex because it doesn't
synchronize between processes.
=> So still need a lock, but can use a f_lock.
This patch implements this new scheme in generic_file_llseek.
I dropped generic_file_llseek_unlocked and changed all callers.

This just gets us ready to support the SEEK_HOLE and SEEK_DATA flags. Turns out
using fiemap in things like cp cause more problems than it solves, so lets try
and give userspace an interface that doesn't suck. We need to match solaris
here, and the definitions are
*o* If /whence/ is SEEK_HOLE, the offset of the start of the
next hole greater than or equal to the supplied offset
is returned. The definition of a hole is provided near
the end of the DESCRIPTION.
*o* If /whence/ is SEEK_DATA, the file pointer is set to the
start of the next non-hole file region greater than or
equal to the supplied offset.
So in the generic case the entire file is data and there is a virtual hole at
the end. That means we will just return i_size for SEEK_HOLE and will return
the same offset for SEEK_DATA. This is how Solaris does it so we have to do it
the same way.

We used to protect against overflow, but rather than return an error, do
what read/write does, namely to limit the total size to MAX_RW_COUNT.
This is not only more consistent, but it also means that any broken
low-level read/write routine that still keeps counts in 'int' can't
break.

Now, rw_verify_area() checsk f_pos is negative or not. And if negative,
returns -EINVAL.
But, some special files as /dev/(k)mem and /proc/<pid>/mem etc.. has
negative offsets. And we can't do any access via read/write to the
file(device).
So introduce FMODE_UNSIGNED_OFFSET to allow negative file offsets.

All file operations now have an explicit .llseek
operation pointer, so we can change the default
action for future code.
This makes changes the default from default_llseek
to no_llseek, which always returns -ESPIPE if
a user tries to seek on a file without a .llseek
operation.
The name of the default_llseek function remains
unchanged, if anyone thinks we should change it,
please speak up.

There are currently 191 users of default_llseek.
Nine of these are in device drivers that use the
big kernel lock. None of these ever touch
file->f_pos outside of llseek or file_pos_write.
Consequently, we never rely on the BKL
in the default_llseek function and can
replace that with i_mutex, which is also
used in generic_file_llseek.

fanotify, the upcoming notification system actually needs a struct path so it can
do opens in the context of listeners, and it needs a file so it can get f_flags
from the original process. Close was the only operation that already was passing
a struct file to the notification hook. This patch passes a file for access,
modify, and open as well as they are easily available to these hooks.

This is an implementation of ->llseek useable for the rare special case
when userspace expects the seek to succeed but the (device) file is
actually not able to perform the seek. In this case you use noop_llseek()
instead of falling back to the default implementation of ->llseek.

sendfile(2) was reworked with the splice infrastructure, but it still
checks f_op.sendpage() instead of f_op.splice_write() wrongly. Although
if f_op.sendpage() exists, f_op.splice_write() always exists at the same
time currently, the assumption will be broken in future silently. This
patch also brings a side effect: sendfile(2) can work with any output
file. Some security checks related to f_op are added too.

If f_op->splice_read() is not implemented, fall back to a plain read.
Use vfs_readv() to read into previously allocated pages.
This will allow splice and functions using splice, such as the loop
device, to work on all filesystems. This includes "direct_io" files
in fuse which bypass the page cache.

Instead of always splitting the file offset into 32-bit 'high' and 'low'
parts, just split them into the largest natural word-size - which in C
terms is 'unsigned long'.
This allows 64-bit architectures to avoid the unnecessary 32-bit
shifting and masking for native format (while the compat interfaces will
obviously always have to do it).
This also changes the order of 'high' and 'low' to be "low first". Why?
Because when we have it like this, the 64-bit system calls now don't use
the "pos_high" argument at all, and it makes more sense for the native
system call to simply match the user-mode prototype.
This results in a much more natural calling convention, and allows the
compiler to generate much more straightforward code. On x86-64, we now
generate

which isn't _that_ horrible, but it does show how the natural word size
is just a more sensible interface (same arguments will hold in the user
level glibc wrapper function, of course, so the kernel side is just half
of the equation!)
Note: in all cases the user code wrapper can again be the same. You can
just do

__syscall(PWRITEV, fd, iov, count, offset, (offset >> HALF_BITS) >> HALF_BITS);
or something like that. That way the user mode wrapper will also be
nicely passing in a zero (it won't actually have to do the shifts, the
compiler will understand what is going on) for the last argument.
And that is a good idea, even if nobody will necessarily ever care: if
we ever do move to a 128-bit lloff_t, this particular system call might
be left alone. Of course, that will be the least of our worries if we
really ever need to care, so this may not be worth really caring about.

This patch adds preadv and pwritev system calls. These syscalls are a
pretty straightforward combination of pread and readv (same for write).
They are quite useful for doing vectored I/O in threaded applications.
Using lseek+readv instead opens race windows you'll have to plug with
locking.

The application-visible interface provided by glibc should look like
this to be compatible to the existing implementations in the *BSD family:

This prototype has one problem though: On 32bit archs is the (64bit)
offset argument unaligned, which the syscall ABI of several archs doesn't
allow to do. At least s390 needs a wrapper in glibc to handle this. As
we'll need a wrappers in glibc anyway I've decided to push problem to
glibc entriely and use a syscall prototype which works without
arch-specific wrappers inside the kernel: The offset argument is
explicitly splitted into two 32bit values.
The patch sports the actual system call implementation and the windup in
the x86 system call tables. Other archs follow as separate patches.
