Chuck Lever 2bea90d43a SUNRPC: RPC buffer size estimates are too large
The RPC buffer size estimation logic in net/sunrpc/clnt.c always
significantly overestimates the requirements for the buffer size.
A little instrumentation demonstrated that in fact rpc_malloc was never
allocating the buffer from the mempool, but almost always called kmalloc.

To compute the size of the RPC buffer more precisely, split p_bufsiz into
two fields; one for the argument size, and one for the result size.

Then, compute the sum of the exact call and reply header sizes, and split
the RPC buffer precisely between the two. That should keep almost all RPC
buffers within the 2KiB buffer mempool limit.

And, we can finally be rid of RPC_SLACK_SPACE!

Eric Dumazet b7aa0bf70c [NET]: convert network timestamps to ktime_t
We currently use a special structure (struct skb_timeval) and plain
'struct timeval' to store packet timestamps in sk_buffs and struct
sock.

This has some drawbacks :
- Fixed resolution of micro second.
- Waste of space on 64bit platforms where sizeof(struct timeval)=16

I suggest using ktime_t that is a nice abstraction of high resolution
time services, currently capable of nanosecond resolution.

As sizeof(ktime_t) is 8 bytes, using ktime_t in 'struct sock' permits
a 8 byte shrink of this structure on 64bit architectures. Some other
structures also benefit from this size reduction (struct ipq in
ipv4/ip_fragment.c, struct frag_queue in ipv6/reassembly.c, ...)

Once this ktime infrastructure adopted, we can more easily provide
nanosecond resolution on top of it. (ioctl SIOCGSTAMPNS and/or
SO_TIMESTAMPNS/SCM_TIMESTAMPNS)

Note : this patch includes a bug correction in
compat_sock_get_timestamp() where a "err = 0;" was missing (so this
syscall returned -ENOENT instead of 0)

Trond Myklebust 241c39b9ac RPC: Fix the TCP resend semantics for NFSv4
Fix a regression due to the patch "NFS: disconnect before retrying NFSv4
requests over TCP"

The assumption made in xprt_transmit() that the condition
"req->rq_bytes_sent == 0 and request is on the receive list"
should imply that we're dealing with a retransmission is false.
Firstly, it may simply happen that the socket send queue was full
at the time the request was initially sent through xprt_transmit().
Secondly, doing this for each request that was retransmitted implies
that we disconnect and reconnect for _every_ request that happened to
be retransmitted irrespective of whether or not a disconnection has
already occurred.

Fix is to move this logic into the call_status request timeout handler.

NeilBrown 30f3deeee8 knfsd: use a spinlock to protect sk_info_authunix
sk_info_authunix is not being protected properly so the object that it
points to can be cache_put twice, leading to corruption.

We borrow svsk->sk_defer_lock to provide the protection. We should
probably rename that lock to have a more generic name - later.

Greg Banks 42a7fc4a65 [PATCH] knfsd: provide sunrpc pool_mode module option
Provide a module param "pool_mode" for sunrpc.ko which allows a sysadmin to
choose the mode for mapping NFS thread service pools to CPUs. Values are:

auto choose a mapping mode heuristically
global (default, same as the pre-2.6.19 code) a single global pool
percpu one pool per CPU
pernode one pool per NUMA node

Note that since 2.6.19 the hardcoded behaviour has been "auto", this patch
makes the default "global".

The pool mode can be changed after boot/modprobe using /sys, if the NFS and
lockd services have been shut down. A useful side effect of this change is to
fix a small memory leak when unloading the module.

NeilBrown cda1fd4abd [PATCH] knfsd: fix recently introduced problem with shutting down a busy NFS server
When the last thread of nfsd exits, it shuts down all related sockets. It
currently uses svc_close_socket to do this, but that only is immediately
effective if the socket is not SK_BUSY.

If the socket is busy - i.e. if a request has arrived that has not yet been
processes - svc_close_socket is not effective and the shutdown process spins.

So create a new svc_force_close_socket which removes the SK_BUSY flag is set
and then calls svc_close_socket.

Also change some open-codes loops in svc_destroy to use
list_for_each_entry_safe.

NeilBrown 7a37f5787e [PATCH] knfsd: use recv_msg to get peer address for NFSD instead of code-copying
The sunrpc server code needs to know the source and destination address for
UDP packets so it can reply properly. It currently copies code out of the
network stack to pick the pieces out of the skb. This is ugly and causes
compile problems with the IPv6 stuff.

So, rip that out and use recv_msg instead. This is a much cleaner interface,
but has a slight cost in that the checksum is now checked before the copy, so
we don't benefit from doing both at the same time. This can probably be
fixed.

Christoph Lameter 53b8a315b7 [PATCH] Convert highest_possible_processor_id to nr_cpu_ids
We frequently need the maximum number of possible processors in order to
allocate arrays for all processors. So far this was done using
highest_possible_processor_id(). However, we do need the number of
processors not the highest id. Moreover the number was so far dynamically
calculated on each invokation. The number of possible processors does not
change when the system is running. We can therefore calculate that number
once.

Christoph Lameter 74c7aa8b85 [PATCH] Replace highest_possible_node_id() with nr_node_ids
highest_possible_node_id() is currently used to calculate the last possible
node idso that the network subsystem can figure out how to size per node
arrays.

I think having the ability to determine the maximum amount of nodes in a
system at runtime is useful but then we should name this entry
correspondingly, it should return the number of node_ids, and the the value
needs to be setup only once on bootup. The node_possible_map does not
change after bootup.

This patch introduces nr_node_ids and replaces the use of
highest_possible_node_id(). nr_node_ids is calculated on bootup when the
page allocators pagesets are initialized.

Eric W. Biederman 0b4d414714 [PATCH] sysctl: remove insert_at_head from register_sysctl
The semantic effect of insert_at_head is that it would allow new registered
sysctl entries to override existing sysctl entries of the same name. Which is
pain for caching and the proc interface never implemented.

I have done an audit and discovered that none of the current users of
register_sysctl care as (excpet for directories) they do not register
duplicate sysctl entries.

So this patch simply removes the support for overriding existing entries in
the sys_sysctl interface since no one uses it or cares and it makes future
enhancments harder.

Tim Schmielau cd354f1ae7 [PATCH] remove many unneeded #includes of sched.h
After Al Viro (finally) succeeded in removing the sched.h #include in module.h
recently, it makes sense again to remove other superfluous sched.h includes.
There are quite a lot of files which include it but don't actually need
anything defined in there. Presumably these includes were once needed for
macros that used to live in sched.h, but moved to other header files in the
course of cleaning it up.

To ease the pain, this time I did not fiddle with any header files and only
removed #includes from .c-files, which tend to cause less trouble.

Compile tested against 2.6.20-rc2 and 2.6.20-rc2-mm2 (with offsets) on alpha,
arm, i386, ia64, mips, powerpc, and x86_64 with allnoconfig, defconfig,
allmodconfig, and allyesconfig as well as a few randconfigs on x86_64 and all
configs in arch/arm/configs on arm. I also checked that no new warnings were
introduced by the patch (actually, some warnings are removed that were emitted
by unnecessarily included header files).

This causes problems for people in more than 16 groups.

Chuck Lever 43d78ef2ba NFS: disconnect before retrying NFSv4 requests over TCP
RFC3530 section 3.1.1 states an NFSv4 client MUST NOT send a request
twice on the same connection unless it is the NULL procedure. Section
3.1.1 suggests that the client should disconnect and reconnect if it
wants to retry a request.

Implement this by adding an rpc_clnt flag that an ULP can use to
specify that the underlying transport should be disconnected on a
major timeout. The NFSv4 client asserts this new flag, and requests
no retries after a minor retransmit timeout.

Note that disconnecting on a retransmit is in general not safe to do
if the RPC client does not reuse the TCP port number when reconnecting.

Chuck Lever 482fb94e1b [PATCH] knfsd: SUNRPC: allow creating an RPC service without registering with portmapper
Sometimes we need to create an RPC service but not register it with the local
portmapper. NFSv4 delegation callback, for example.

Change the svc_makesock() API to allow optionally creating temporary or
permanent sockets, optionally registering with the local portmapper, and make
it return the ephemeral port of the new socket.

Chuck Lever 6b174337e5 [PATCH] knfsd: SUNRPC: update internal API: separate pmap register and temp sockets
Currently in the RPC server, registering with the local portmapper and

allow these two socket characteristics to be separately specified.

NeilBrown aaf68cfbf2 [PATCH] knfsd: fix a race in closing NFSd connections
If you lose this race, it can iput a socket inode twice and you get a BUG
in fs/inode.c

When I added the option for user-space to close a socket, I added some
cruft to svc_delete_socket so that I could call that function when closing
a socket per user-space request.

This was the wrong thing to do. I should have just set SK_CLOSE and let
normal mechanisms do the work.

Not only wrong, but buggy. The locking is all wrong and it openned up a
race where-by a socket could be closed twice.

So this patch:
Introduces svc_close_socket which sets SK_CLOSE then either leave
the close up to a thread, or calls svc_delete_socket if it can
  get SK_BUSY.

Adds a bias to sk_busy which is removed when SK_DEAD is set,
This avoid races around shutting down the socket.

Changes several 'spin_lock' to 'spin_lock_bh' where the _bh
  was missing.

NeilBrown 250f391518 [PATCH] knfsd: fix an NFSD bug with full sized, non-page-aligned reads
NFSd assumes that largest number of pages that will be needed for a
request+response is 2+N where N pages is the size of the largest permitted
read/write request. The '2' are 1 for the non-data part of the request, and 1
for the non-data part of the reply.

However, when a read request is not page-aligned, and we choose to use
->sendfile to send it directly from the page cache, we may need N+1 pages to
hold the whole reply. This can overflow and array and cause an Oops.

This patch increases size of the array for holding pages by one and makes sure
that entry is NULL when it is not in use.

J.Bruce Fields e0bb89ef03 [PATCH] knfsd: nfsd: don't drop silently on upcall deferral
To avoid tying up server threads when nfsd makes an upcall (to mountd, to get
export options, to idmapd, for nfsv4 name<->id mapping, etc.), we temporarily
"drop" the request and save enough information so that we can revisit it
later.

Certain failures during the deferral process can cause us to really drop the
request and never revisit it.

This is often less than ideal, and is unacceptable in the NFSv4 case--rfc 3530
forbids the server from dropping a request without also closing the
connection.

As a first step, we modify the deferral code to return -ETIMEDOUT (which is
translated to nfserr_jukebox in the v3 and v4 cases, and remains a drop in the
v2 case).

Now that skb_read_bits() is exported, rename it to avoid confusing it with

not have names that suggest they are of generic use. Also rename

J. Bruce Fields e678e06bf8 gss: krb5: remove signalg and sealalg
We designed the krb5 context import without completely understanding the
context. Now it's clear that there are a number of fields that we ignore,
or that we depend on having one single value.

In particular, we only support one value of signalg currently; so let's
check the signalg field in the downcall (in case we decide there's
something else we could support here eventually), but ignore it otherwise.

Olga Kornievskaia adeb8133dd rpc: spkm3 update
This updates the spkm3 code to bring it up to date with our current
understanding of the spkm3 spec.

In doing so, we're changing the downcall format used by gssd in the spkm3 case,
which will cause an incompatilibity with old userland spkm3 support. Since the
old code a) didn't implement the protocol correctly, and b) was never
distributed except in the form of some experimental patches from the citi web
site, we're assuming this is OK.

We do detect the old downcall format and print warning (and fail). We also
include a version number in the new downcall format, to be used in the
future in case any further change is required.

In some more detail:

	- fix integrity support
	- removed dependency on NIDs. instead OIDs are used
	- known OID values for algorithms added.
	- fixed some context fields and types

Christophe Saout cc4dc59e55 Subject: Re: [PATCH] Fix SUNRPC wakeup/execute race condition
The sunrpc scheduler contains a race condition that can let an RPC
task end up being neither running nor on any wait queue. The race takes
place between rpc_make_runnable (called from rpc_wake_up_task) and
__rpc_execute under the following condition:

First __rpc_execute calls tk_action which puts the task on some wait
queue. The task is dequeued by another process before __rpc_execute
continues its execution. While executing rpc_make_runnable exactly after
setting the task `running' bit and before clearing the `queued' bit
__rpc_execute picks up execution, clears `running' and subsequently
both functions fall through, both under the false assumption somebody
else took the job.

Swapping rpc_test_and_set_running with rpc_clear_queued in
rpc_make_runnable fixes that hole. This introduces another possible
race condition that can be handled by checking for `queued' after
setting the `running' bit.

Bug noticed on a 4-way x86_64 system under XEN with an NFSv4 server
on the same physical machine, apparently one of the few ways to hit
this race condition at all.

David Howells 65f27f3844 WorkStruct: Pass the work_struct pointer instead of context data
Pass the work_struct pointer to the work function rather than context data.
The work function can use container_of() to work out the data.

For the cases where the container of the work_struct may go away the moment the
pending bit is cleared, it is made possible to defer the release of the
structure by deferring the clearing of the pending bit.

To make this work, an extra flag is introduced into the management side of the
work_struct. This governs auto-release of the structure upon execution.

Ordinarily, the work queue executor would release the work_struct for further
scheduling or deallocation by clearing the pending bit prior to jumping to the
work function. This means that, unless the driver makes some guarantee itself
that the work_struct won't go away, the work function may not access anything
else in the work_struct or its container lest they be deallocated.. This is a
problem if the auxiliary data is taken away (as done by the last patch).

However, if the pending bit is *not* cleared before jumping to the work
function, then the work function *may* access the work_struct and its container
with no problems. But then the work function must itself release the
work_struct by calling work_release().

In most cases, automatic release is fine, so this is the default. Special
initiators exist for the non-auto-release case (ending in _NAR).

Neil Brown d6740df98e [PATCH] sunrpc: fix refcounting problems in rpc servers
A recent patch fixed a problem which would occur when the refcount on an
auth_domain reached zero. This problem has not been reported in practice
despite existing in two major kernel releases because the refcount can
never reach zero.

This patch fixes the problems that stop the refcount reaching zero.

1/ We were adding to the refcount when inserting in the hash table,
but only removing from the hashtable when the refcount reached zero.
Obviously it never would. So don't count the implied reference of
   being in the hash table.

2/ There are two paths on which a socket can be destroyed. One called
svcauth_unix_info_release(). The other didn't. So when the other was
taken, we can lose a reference to an ip_map which in-turn holds a
   reference to an auth_domain

So unify the exit paths into svc_sock_put. This highlights the fact
that svc_delete_socket has slightly odd semantics - it does not drop
a reference but probably should. Fixing this need a bit more
   thought and testing.

NeilBrown 1a047060a9 [PATCH] knfsd: fix race that can disable NFS server
This patch is suitable for just about any 2.6 kernel. It should go in
2.6.19 and 2.6.18.2 and possible even the .17 and .16 stable series.

This is a long standing bug that seems to have only recently become
apparent, presumably due to increasing use of NFS over TCP - many
distros seem to be making it the default.

The SK_CONN bit gets set when a listening socket may be ready
for an accept, just as SK_DATA is set when data may be available.

It is entirely possible for svc_tcp_accept to be called with neither
of these set. It doesn't happen often but there is a small race in
svc_sock_enqueue as SK_CONN and SK_DATA are tested outside the
spin_lock. They could be cleared immediately after the test and
before the lock is gained.

This normally shouldn't be a problem. The sockets are non-blocking so
trying to read() or accept() when ther is nothing to do is not a problem.

However: svc_tcp_recvfrom makes the decision "Should I accept() or
should I read()" based on whether SK_CONN is set or not. This usually
works but is not safe. The decision should be based on whether it is
a TCP_LISTEN socket or a TCP_CONNECTED socket.

NeilBrown c6b0a9f87b [PATCH] knfsd: tidy up up meaning of 'buffer size' in nfsd/sunrpc
There is some confusion about the meaning of 'bufsz' for a sunrpc server.
In some cases it is the largest message that can be sent or received. In
other cases it is the largest 'payload' that can be included in a NFS
message.

In either case, it is not possible for both the request and the reply to be
this large. One of the request or reply may only be one page long, which
fits nicely with NFS.

So we remove 'bufsz' and replace it with two numbers: 'max_payload' and
'max_mesg'. Max_payload is the size that the server requests. It is used
by the server to check the max size allowed on a particular connection:
depending on the protocol a lower limit might be used.

max_mesg is the largest single message that can be sent or received. It is
calculated as the max_payload, rounded up to a multiple of PAGE_SIZE, and
with PAGE_SIZE added to overhead. Only one of the request and reply may be
this size. The other must be at most one page.

Greg Banks 7b2b1fee30 [PATCH] knfsd: knfsd: cache ipmap per TCP socket
Speed up high call-rate workloads by caching the struct ip_map for the peer on
the connected struct svc_sock instead of looking it up in the ip_map cache
hashtable on every call. This helps workloads using AUTH_SYS authentication
over TCP.

Testing was on a 4 CPU 4 NIC Altix using 4 IRIX clients, each with 16
synthetic client threads simulating an rsync (i.e. recursive directory
listing) workload reading from an i386 RH9 install image (161480 regular files
in 10841 directories) on the server. That tree is small enough to fill in the
server's RAM so no disk traffic was involved. This setup gives a sustained
call rate in excess of 60000 calls/sec before being CPU-bound on the server.

Profiling showed strcmp(), called from ip_map_match(), was taking 4.8% of each
CPU, and ip_map_lookup() was taking 2.9%. This patch drops both contribution
into the profile noise.

Note that the above result overstates this value of this patch for most
workloads. The synthetic clients are all using separate IP addresses, so
there are 64 entries in the ip_map cache hash. Because the kernel measured
contained the bug fixed in commit

commit 1f1e030bf7

and was running on 64bit little-endian machine, probably all of those 64
entries were on a single chain, thus increasing the cost of ip_map_lookup().

With a modern kernel you would need more clients to see the same amount of
performance improvement. This patch has helped to scale knfsd to handle a
deployment with 2000 NFS clients.

NeilBrown 3cc03b164c [PATCH] knfsd: Avoid excess stack usage in svc_tcp_recvfrom
.. by allocating the array of 'kvec' in 'struct svc_rqst'.

As we plan to increase RPCSVC_MAXPAGES from 8 upto 256, we can no longer
allocate an array of this size on the stack. So we allocate it in 'struct
svc_rqst'.

However svc_rqst contains (indirectly) an array of the same type and size
(actually several, but they are in a union). So rather than waste space, we
move those arrays out of the separately allocated union and into svc_rqst to
share with the kvec moved out of svc_tcp_recvfrom (various arrays are used at
different times, so there is no conflict).

NeilBrown 4452435948 [PATCH] knfsd: Replace two page lists in struct svc_rqst with one
We are planning to increase RPCSVC_MAXPAGES from about 8 to about 256. This
means we need to be a bit careful about arrays of size RPCSVC_MAXPAGES.

struct svc_rqst contains two such arrays. However the there are never more
that RPCSVC_MAXPAGES pages in the two arrays together, so only one array is
needed.

The two arrays are for the pages holding the request, and the pages holding
the reply. Instead of two arrays, we can simply keep an index into where the
first reply page is.

This patch also removes a number of small inline functions that probably
server to obscure what is going on rather than clarify it, and opencode the
needed functionality.

Also remove the 'rq_restailpage' variable as it is *always* 0. i.e. if the
response 'xdr' structure has a non-empty tail it is always in the same pages
as the head.

check counters are initilised and incr properly
check for consistant usage of ++ etc
maybe extra some inlines for common approach

NeilBrown 37a034729a [PATCH] knfsd: call lockd_down when closing a socket via a write to nfsd/portlist
The refcount that nfsd holds on lockd is based on the number of open sockets.
So when we close a socket, we should decrement the ref (with lockd_down).

Currently when a socket is closed via writing to the portlist file, that
doesn't happen.

So: make sure we get an error return if the socket that was requested does is
not found, and call lockd_down if it was.

Greg Banks bfd241600a [PATCH] knfsd: make rpc threads pools numa aware
Actually implement multiple pools. On NUMA machines, allocate a svc_pool per
NUMA node; on SMP a svc_pool per CPU; otherwise a single global pool. Enqueue
sockets on the svc_pool corresponding to the CPU on which the socket bh is run
(i.e. the NIC interrupt CPU). Threads have their cpu mask set to limit them
to the CPUs in the svc_pool that owns them.

This is the patch that allows an Altix to scale NFS traffic linearly
beyond 4 CPUs and 4 NICs.

Greg Banks 3262c816a3 [PATCH] knfsd: split svc_serv into pools
Split out the list of idle threads and pending sockets from svc_serv into a
new svc_pool structure, and allocate a fixed number (in this patch, 1) of
pools per svc_serv. The new structure contains a lock which takes over
several of the duties of svc_serv->sv_lock, which is now relegated to
protecting only sv_tempsocks, sv_permsocks, and sv_tmpcnt in svc_serv.

The point is to move the hottest fields out of svc_serv and into svc_pool,
allowing a following patch to arrange for a svc_pool per NUMA node or per CPU.
This is a major step towards making the NFS server NUMA-friendly.

Greg Banks 36bdfc8bae [PATCH] knfsd: move tempsock aging to a timer
Following are 11 patches from Greg Banks which combine to make knfsd more
Numa-aware. They reduce hitting on 'global' data structures, and create some
data-structures that can be node-local.

knfsd threads are bound to a particular node, and the thread to handle a new
request is chosen from the threads that are attach to the node that received
the interrupt.

The distribution of threads across nodes can be controlled by a new file in
the 'nfsd' filesystem, though the default approach of an even spread is
probably fine for most sites.

Some (old) numbers that show the efficacy of these patches: N == number of
NICs == number of CPUs == nmber of clients. Number of NUMA nodes == N/2

N	Throughput, MiB/s	CPU usage, % (max=N*100)
	Before	After Before	After
	---	------	---- -----	-----
	4	312	435 350	228
	6	500	656 501	418
	8	562	804 690	589

This patch:

Move the aging of RPC/TCP connection sockets from the main svc_recv() loop to
a timer which uses a mark-and-sweep algorithm every 6 minutes. This reduces
the amount of work that needs to be done in the main RPC loop and the length
of time we need to hold the (effectively global) svc_serv->sv_lock.

Check the bounds of length specifiers more thoroughly in the XDR decoding of

Currently, if the server returns a bitmap or attr length that causes the

Also add a check into the main XDR decode handler to make sure that the amount
of data is a multiple of four bytes (as specified by RFC-1014). This makes
sure that we can do u32* pointer subtraction in the NFS client without risking
an undefined result (the result is undefined if the pointers are not correctly

Neil Brown 2f34931fdc [PATCH] knfsd: fix race related problem when adding items to and svcrpc auth cache
If we don't find the item we are lookng for, we allocate a new one, and
then grab the lock again and search to see if it has been added while we

So move the ->init call earlier to that it will always be fully initilised
if we have to put it.

Arjan van de Ven c6573c2904 [PATCH] lockdep: annotate sunrpc code
Add i_mutex ordering annotations to the sunrpc rpc_pipe code. This code has 3
levels of i_mutex hierarchy in some cases: parent dir, client dir and file
inside client dir; the i_mutex ordering is I_MUTEX_PARENT -> I_MUTEX_CHILD ->
I_MUTEX_NORMAL

This patch applies this ordering annotation to the various functions. This is
in line with the VFS expected ordering where it is always OK to lock a child
after locking a parent; the sunrpc code is very diligent in doing this
correctly.

Has no effect on non-lockdep kernels.

2006-06-24 13:07:53 -04:00
David Howells 454e2398be [PATCH] VFS: Permit filesystem to override root dentry on mount
Extend the get_sb() filesystem operation to take an extra argument that
permits the VFS to pass in the target vfsmount that defines the mountpoint.

The filesystem is then required to manually set the superblock and root dentry
pointers. For most filesystems, this should be done with simple_set_mnt()
which will set the superblock pointer and then set the root dentry to the
superblock's s_root (as per the old default behaviour).

The get_sb() op now returns an integer as there's now no need to return the
superblock pointer.

This patch permits a superblock to be implicitly shared amongst several mount
points, such as can be done with NFS to avoid potential inode aliasing. In
such a case, simple_set_mnt() would not be called, and instead the mnt_root
and mnt_sb would be set directly.

The patch also makes the following changes:

(*) the get_sb_*() convenience functions in the core kernel now take a vfsmount
pointer argument and return an integer, so most filesystems have to change
     very little.

(*) If one of the convenience function is not used, then get_sb() should
normally call simple_set_mnt() to instantiate the vfsmount. This will
always return 0, and so can be tail-called from get_sb().

(*) generic_shutdown_super() now calls shrink_dcache_sb() to clean up the
dcache upon superblock destruction rather than shrink_dcache_anon().

This is required because the superblock may now have multiple trees that
aren't actually bound to s_root, but that still need to be cleaned up. The
currently called functions assume that the whole tree is rooted at s_root,
and that anonymous dentries are not the roots of trees which results in
     dentries being left unculled.

However, with the way NFS superblock sharing are currently set to be
implemented, these assumptions are violated: the root of the filesystem is
simply a dummy dentry and inode (the real inode for '/' may well be
inaccessible), and all the vfsmounts are rooted on anonymous[*] dentries
     with child trees.

[*] Anonymous until discovered from another tree.

(*) The documentation has been adjusted, including the additional bit of
changing ext2_* into foo_* in the documentation.

Chuck Lever bf3fcf8955 SUNRPC: NFS_ROOT always uses the same XIDs
The XID generator uses get_random_bytes to generate an initial XID.
NFS_ROOT starts up before the random driver, though, so get_random_bytes
doesn't set a random XID for NFS_ROOT. This causes NFS_ROOT mount points
to reuse XIDs every time the client is booted. If the client boots often
enough, the server will start serving old replies out of its DRC.

Use net_random() instead.

Test plan:

1/ exp_pseudoroot (used for NFSv4 only) leaks a reference to an export
   entry.
2/ sunrpc_cache_update doesn't increment the entries count when it adds
   an entry.

J. Bruce Fields d4a30e7e66 RPCSEC_GSS: fix leak in krb5 code caused by superfluous kmalloc
I was sloppy when generating a previous patch; I modified the callers of
krb5_make_checksum() to allocate memory for the buffer where the result is
returned, then forgot to modify krb5_make_checksum to stop allocating that
memory itself. The result is a per-packet memory leak. This fixes the
problem by removing the now-superfluous kmalloc().

- in cache_check, h must be non-NULL as it has been de-referenced,
so don't bother checking for NULL.

- When a cache-item is updated, we need to call cache_revisit_request to see
if there is a pending request waiting for that item. We were using
a transition to CACHE_VALID to see if that was needed, however that is
wrong as an expired entry will still be marked 'valid' (as the data is valid

CACHE_PENDING which is exactly the right thing to test.

Paul Jackson 4b6a9316fa [PATCH] cpuset memory spread: slab cache filesystems
Mark file system inode and similar slab caches subject to SLAB_MEM_SPREAD
memory spreading.

If a slab cache is marked SLAB_MEM_SPREAD, then anytime that a task that's
in a cpuset with the 'memory_spread_slab' option enabled goes to allocate
from such a slab cache, the allocations are spread evenly over all the
memory nodes (task->mems_allowed) allowed to that task, instead of favoring
allocation on the node local to the current cpu.

The following inode and similar caches are marked SLAB_MEM_SPREAD:

    file cache

    net/sunrpc/rpc_pipe.c rpc_inode_cache

The choice of which slab caches to so mark was quite simple. I marked
those already marked SLAB_RECLAIM_ACCOUNT, except for fs/xfs, dentry_cache,
inode_cache, and buffer_head, which were marked in a previous patch. Even
though SLAB_RECLAIM_ACCOUNT is for a different purpose, it marks the same
potentially large file system i/o related slab caches as we need for memory
spreading.

Given that the rule now becomes "wherever you would have used a
SLAB_RECLAIM_ACCOUNT slab cache flag before (usually the inode cache), use
the SLAB_MEM_SPREAD flag too", this should be easy enough to maintain.
Future file system writers will just copy one of the existing file system
slab cache setups and tend to get it right without thinking.

Eric Dumazet 5160ee6fc8 [PATCH] shrink dentry struct
Some long time ago, dentry struct was carefully tuned so that on 32 bits
UP, sizeof(struct dentry) was exactly 128, ie a power of 2, and a multiple
of memory cache lines.

Then RCU was added and dentry struct enlarged by two pointers, with nice
results for SMP, but not so good on UP, because breaking the above tuning
(128 + 8 = 136 bytes)

This patch reverts this unwanted side effect, by using an union (d_u),
where d_rcu and d_child are placed so that these two fields can share their
memory needs.

At the time d_free() is called (and d_rcu is really used), d_child is known
to be empty and not touched by the dentry freeing.

Lockless lookups only access d_name, d_parent, d_lock, d_op, d_flags (so
the previous content of d_child is not needed if said dentry was unhashed
but still accessed by a CPU because of RCU constraints)

As dentry cache easily contains millions of entries, a size reduction is
worth the extra complexity of the ugly C union.

Trond Myklebust 44c288732f NFSv4: stateful NFSv4 RPC call interface
The NFSv4 model requires us to complete all RPC calls that might
establish state on the server whether or not the user wants to
interrupt it. We may also need to schedule new work (including

The asynchronous RPC model will allow us to ensure that RPC calls
always complete, but in order to allow for "synchronous" RPC, we
want to add the ability to wait for completion.
The waits are, of course, interruptible.

Olaf Kirch 93fbf1a5de [PATCH] Keep nfsd from exiting when seeing recv() errors
I submitted this one previously - svc_tcp_recvfrom currently returns
any errors to the caller, including ECONNRESET and the like.

This is something svc_recv isn't able to deal with:

	len = svsk->sk_recvfrom(rqstp);
	[...]
	if (len == 0 || len == -EAGAIN) {
		[...]
		return -EAGAIN;
	}

	[...]
	return len;

The nfsd main loop will exit when it sees an error code other than
EAGAIN.

The following patch fixes this problem

svc_recv is not equipped to deal with error codes other than EAGAIN,
and will propagate anything else (such as ECONNRESET) up to nfsd,
causing it to exit.

NeilBrown 1f1e030bf7 [PATCH] knfsd: fix hash function for IP addresses on 64bit little-endian machines.
The hash.h hash_long function, when used on a 64 bit machine, ignores many
of the middle-order bits. (The prime chosen it too bit-sparse).

IP addresses for clients of an NFS server are very likely to differ only in
the low-order bits. As addresses are stored in network-byte-order, these
bits become middle-order bits in a little-endian 64bit 'long', and so do
not contribute to the hash. Thus you can have the situation where all
clients appear on one hash chain.

So, until hash_long is fixed (or maybe forever), us a hash function that
works well on IP addresses - xor the bytes together.

Eric Dumazet 90ddc4f047 [NET]: move struct proto_ops to const
I noticed that some of 'struct proto_ops' used in the kernel may share
a cache line used by locks or other heavily modified data. (default
linker alignement is 32 bytes, and L1_CACHE_LINE is 64 or 128 at
least)

This patch makes sure a 'struct proto_ops' can be declared as const,
so that all cpus can share all parts of it without false sharing.

This is not mandatory : a driver can still use a read/write structure
if it needs to (and eventually a __read_mostly)

I made a global stubstitute to change all existing occurences to make
them const.

This should reduce the possibility of false sharing on SMP, and
speedup some socket system calls.

NeilBrown 1887b93529 [PATCH] knfsd: make sure nfsd doesn't hog a cpu forever
Being kernel-threads, nfsd servers don't get pre-empted (depending on
CONFIG). If there is a steady stream of NFS requests that can be served
from cache, an nfsd thread may hold on to a cpu indefinitely, which isn't
very friendly.

So it is good to have a cond_resched in there (just before looking for a
new request to serve), to make sure we play nice.

Herbert Xu fb286bb299 [NET]: Detect hardware rx checksum faults correctly
Here is the patch that introduces the generic skb_checksum_complete
which also checks for hardware RX checksum faults. If that happens,
it'll call netdev_rx_csum_fault which currently prints out a stack
trace with the device name. In future it can turn off RX checksum.

I've converted every spot under net/ that does RX checksum checks to
use skb_checksum_complete or __skb_checksum_complete with the
exceptions of:

* Those places where checksums are done bit by bit. These will call
netdev_rx_csum_fault directly.

* The following have not been completely checked/converted:

ipmr

If the call to xprt_transmit() fails due to socket buffer space
exhaustion, we do not need to re-encode the RPC message when we
loop back through call_transmit.

Re-encoding can actually end up triggering the WARN_ON() in

auth->au_rslack has changed.
It can also cause us to increment the RPCSEC_GSS sequence number

Christoph Hellwig 49705b7743 [PATCH] sanitize lookup_hash prototype
->permission and ->lookup have a struct nameidata * argument these days to
pass down lookup intents. Unfortunately some callers of lookup_hash don't
actually pass this one down. For lookup_one_len() we don't have a struct
nameidata to pass down, but as this function is a library function only
used by filesystem code this is an acceptable limitation. All other
callers should pass down the nameidata, so this patch changes the
lookup_hash interface to only take a struct nameidata argument and derives
the other two arguments to __lookup_hash from it. All callers already have
the nameidata argument available so this is not a problem.

At the same time I'd like to deprecate the lookup_hash interface as there
are better exported interfaces for filesystem usage. Before it can
actually be removed I need to fix up rpc_pipefs.

Various xdr encode routines use au_rslack to guess where the reply argument
will end up, so we can set up the xdr_buf to recieve data into the right place

Currently we calculate the au_rslack estimate when we check the verifier.
Normally this only depends on the verifier size. In the integrity case we add
a few bytes to allow for a length and sequence number.

It's a bit simpler to calculate only the verifier size when we check the

Christoph Hellwig 278c995c8a [PATCH] RPC,NFS: new rpc_pipefs patch
Currently rpc_mkdir/rpc_rmdir and rpc_mkpipe/mk_unlink have an API that's
a little unfortunate. They take a path relative to the rpc_pipefs root and
thus need to perform a full lookup. If you look at debugfs or usbfs they
always store the dentry for directories they created and thus can pass in
a dentry + single pathname component pair into their equivalents of the
 above functions.

And in fact rpc_pipefs actually stores a dentry for all but one component so
this change not only simplifies the core rpc_pipe code but also the callers.

Unfortuntately this code path is only used by the NFS4 idmapper and
AUTH_GSSAPI for which I don't have a test enviroment. Could someone give
it a spin? It's the last bit needed before we can rework the
 lookup_hash API

Chuck Lever 12a804698b [PATCH] RPC: expose API for serializing access to RPC transports
The next several patches introduce an API that allows transports to
choose whether the RPC client provides congestion control or whether
 the transport itself provides it.

The first method we abstract is the one that serializes access to the
RPC transport to prevent the bytes from different requests from mingling
together. This method provides proper request serialization and the
opportunity to prevent new requests from being started because the
 transport is congested.

The normal situation is for the transport to handle congestion control
itself. Although NFS over UDP was first, it has been recognized after
years of experience that having the transport provide congestion control
is much better than doing it in the RPC client. Thus TCP, and probably
every future transport implementation, will use the default method,
xprt_lock_write, provided in xprt.c, which does not provide any kind
of congestion control. UDP can continue using the xprt.c-provided
 Van Jacobson congestion avoidance implementation.

 Test-plan:

Bruce Allan f35279d3f7 [PATCH] sunrpc: cache_register can use wrong module reference
When registering an RPC cache, cache_register() always sets the owner as the
sunrpc module. However, there are RPC caches owned by other modules. With
the incorrect owner setting, the real owning module can be removed potentially
with an open reference to the cache from userspace.

For example, if one were to stop the nfs server and unmount the nfsd
filesystem, the nfsd module could be removed eventhough rpc.idmapd had
references to the idtoname and nametoid caches (i.e.
/proc/net/rpc/nfs4.<cachename>/channel is still open). This resulted in a
system panic on one of our machines when attempting to restart the nfs
services after reloading the nfsd module.

The following patch adds a 'struct module *owner' field in struct
cache_detail. The owner is further assigned to the struct proc_dir_entry
in cache_register() so that the module cannot be unloaded while user-space
daemons have an open reference on the associated file under /proc.

Christoph Lameter 3e1d1d28d9 [PATCH] Cleanup patch for process freezing
1. Establish a simple API for process freezing defined in linux/include/sched.h:

   frozen(process) Check for frozen process
freezing(process) Check if a process is being frozen
freeze(process) Tell a process to freeze (go to refrigerator)
   thaw_process(process)	Restart process
   frozen_process(process)	Process is frozen now

2. Remove all references to PF_FREEZE and PF_FROZEN from all
   kernel sources except sched.h

3. Fix numerous locations where try_to_freeze is manually done by a driver

4. Remove the argument that is no longer necessary from two function calls.

5. Some whitespace cleanup

6. Clear potential race in refrigerator (provides an open window of PF_FREEZE
cleared before setting PF_FROZEN, recalc_sigpending does not check
   PF_FROZEN).

This patch does not address the problem of freeze_processes() violating the rule
that a task may only modify its own flags by setting PF_FREEZE. This is not clean
in an SMP environment. freeze(process) is therefore not SMP safe!

Chuck Lever 20e5ac828d [PATCH] RPC: TCP reconnects are too slow
When the network layer reports a connection close, the RPC task
waiting to reconnect should be notified so it can retry immediately
instead of waiting for the normal connection establishment timeout.

This reverts a change made in 2.6.6 as part of adding client support
for RPC over TCP socket idle timeouts.

 Test-plan:
Destructive testing with NFS over TCP mounts.

Trond Myklebust 14b218a8e4 [PATCH] RPC: Ensure rpc calls respects the RPC_NOINTR flag
For internal purposes, the rpc_clnt_sigmask() call is replaced by
a call to rpc_task_sigmask(), which ensures that the current task
sigmask respects both the client cl_intr flag and the per-task NOINTR flag.

J. Bruce Fields 6a19275ada [PATCH] RPC: [PATCH] improve rpcauthauth_create error returns
Currently we return -ENOMEM for every single failure to create a new auth.
This is actually accurate for auth_null and auth_unix, but for auth_gss it's a
 bit confusing.

Allow rpcauth_create (and the ->create methods) to return errors. With this
patch, the user may sometimes see an EINVAL instead. Whee.

Pavel Pisa 4dc3b16ba1 [PATCH] DocBook: changes and extensions to the kernel documentation
I have recompiled Linux kernel 2.6.11.5 documentation for me and our
university students again. The documentation could be extended for more
sources which are equipped by structured comments for recent 2.6 kernels. I
have tried to proceed with that task. I have done that more times from 2.6.0
time and it gets boring to do same changes again and again. Linux kernel
compiles after changes for i386 and ARM targets. I have added references to
some more files into kernel-api book, I have added some section names as well.
So please, check that changes do not break something and that categories are
not too much skewed.

I have changed kernel-doc to accept "fastcall" and "asmlinkage" words reserved
by kernel convention. Most of the other changes are modifications in the
comments to make kernel-doc happy, accept some parameters description and do
not bail out on errors. Changed <pid> to @pid in the description, moved some
#ifdef before comments to correct function to comments bindings, etc.

You can see result of the modified documentation build at
  http://cmp.felk.cvut.cz/~pisa/linux/lkdb-2.6.11.tar.gz

Some more sources are ready to be included into kernel-doc generated
documentation. Sources has been added into kernel-api for now. Some more
section names added and probably some more chaos introduced as result of quick
cleanup work.

Linus Torvalds 1da177e4c3 Linux-2.6.12-rc2
Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history,
even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git
archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about
3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early
git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good
infrastructure for it.

Let it rip!
