Sebastian Andrzej Siewior 9c8cd6b62f PM / s2idle: Make s2idle_wait_head swait based
s2idle_wait_head is used during s2idle with interrupts disabled even on
RT. There is no "custom" wake up function so swait could be used instead
which is also lower weight compared to the wait_queue.
Make s2idle_wait_head a swait_queue_head.

Thomas Gleixner c1a957d170 PM / suspend: Prevent might sleep splats
timekeeping suspend/resume calls read_persistent_clock() which takes
rtc_lock. That results in might sleep warnings because at that point
we run with interrupts disabled.

We cannot convert rtc_lock to a raw spinlock as that would trigger
other might sleep warnings.

As a workaround we disable the might sleep warnings by setting
system_state to SYSTEM_SUSPEND before calling sysdev_suspend() and
restoring it to SYSTEM_RUNNING afer sysdev_resume(). There is no lock
contention because hibernate / suspend to RAM is single-CPU at this
point.

In s2idle's case the system_state is set to SYSTEM_SUSPEND before
timekeeping_suspend() which is invoked by the last CPU. In the resume
case it set back to SYSTEM_RUNNING after timekeeping_resume() which is
invoked by the first CPU in the resume case. The other CPUs will block
on tick_freeze_lock.

Doug Berger 2ef7c01c0c PM / wakeup: Only update last time for active wakeup sources
When wakelock support was added, the wakeup_source_add() function
was updated to set the last_time value of the wakeup source. This
has the unintended side effect of producing confusing output from
pm_print_active_wakeup_sources() when a wakeup source is added
prior to a sleep that is blocked by a different wakeup source.

The function pm_print_active_wakeup_sources() will search for the
most recently active wakeup source when no active source is found.
If a wakeup source is added after a different wakeup source blocks
the system from going to sleep it may have a later last_time value
than the blocking source and be output as the last active wakeup
source even if it has never actually been active.

It looks to me like the change to wakeup_source_add() was made to
prevent the wakelock garbage collection from accidentally dropping
a wakelock during the narrow window between adding the wakelock to
the wakelock list in wakelock_lookup_add() and the activation of
the wakeup source in pm_wake_lock().

This commit changes the behavior so that only the last_time of the
wakeup source used by a wakelock is initialized prior to adding it
to the wakeup source list. This preserves the meaning of the
last_time value as the last time the wakeup source was active and
allows a wakeup source that has never been active to have a
last_time value of 0.

Dominik Brodowski 70f68ee81e fs: add ksys_sync() helper; remove in-kernel calls to sys_sync()
Using this helper allows us to avoid the in-kernel calls to the
sys_sync() syscall. The ksys_ prefix denotes that this function
is meant as a drop-in replacement for the syscall. In particular, it
uses the same calling convention as sys_sync().

This patch is part of a series which removes in-kernel calls to syscalls.
On this basis, the syscall entry path can be streamlined. For details, see

Mario Limonciello 6484640761 PM / hibernate: Change message when writing to /sys/power/resume
This file is used both for setting the wakeup device without kernel
command line as well as for actually waking the system (when appropriate
swap header is in place).

To avoid confusion on incorrect logs in system log downgrade the
message to debug and make it clearer.

Mario Limonciello 355064675f PM / hibernate: Make passing hibernate offsets more friendly
Currently the only way to specify a hibernate offset for a
swap file is on the kernel command line.

Add a new /sys/power/resume_offset that lets userspace
specify the offset and disk to use when initiating a hibernate
cycle.

Bart Van Assche 4bf236a333 PM / sleep: Make lock/unlock_system_sleep() available to kernel modules
Since pm_mutex is not exported using lock/unlock_system_sleep() from
inside a kernel module causes a "pm_mutex undefined" linker error.
Hence move lock/unlock_system_sleep() into kernel/power/main.c and
export these.

Rainer Fiebig bdbc98abb3 PM: hibernate: Do not subtract NR_FILE_MAPPED in minimum_image_size()
s2disk/s2both may fail unnecessarily and erratically if NR_FILE_MAPPED
is high - for instance when using VMs with VirtualBox and perhaps VMware
Player. In those situations s2disk becomes unreliable and therefore
unusable.

A typical scenario is: user issues a s2disk and it fails. User issues
a second s2disk immediately after that and it succeeds.  And user
wonders why.

The problem is caused by minimum_image_size() in snapshot.c.  The
value it returns is roughly 100% too high because NR_FILE_MAPPED is
subtracted in its calculation.  Eventually the number of preallocated
image pages is falsely too low.

This doesn't matter as long as NR_FILE_MAPPED-values are in a normal
range or in 32bit-environments as the code allows for allocation of
additional pages from highmem.

But with the high values generated by VirtualBox-VMs (a 2-GB-VM causes
NR_FILE_MAPPED go up by 2 GB) it may lead to failure in 64bit-systems.

Not subtracting NR_FILE_MAPPED in minimum_image_size() solves the
problem.

I've done at least hundreds of successful s2both/s2disk now on an
x86_64 system (with and without VirtualBox) which gives me some
confidence that this is right.  It has turned s2disk/s2both from
unusable into 100% reliable.

Mel Gorman 453f85d43f mm: remove __GFP_COLD
As the page free path makes no distinction between cache hot and cold
pages, there is no real useful ordering of pages in the free list that
allocation requests can take advantage of.  Juding from the users of
__GFP_COLD, it is likely that a number of them are the result of copying
other sites instead of actually measuring the impact.  Remove the
__GFP_COLD parameter which simplifies a number of paths in the page
allocator.

This is potentially controversial but bear in mind that the size of the
per-cpu pagelists versus modern cache sizes means that the whole per-cpu
list can often fit in the L3 cache.  Hence, there is only a potential
benefit for microbenchmarks that alloc/free pages in a tight loop.  It's
even worse when THP is taken into account which has little or no chance
of getting a cache-hot page as the per-cpu list is bypassed and the
zeroing of multiple pages will thrash the cache anyway.

The truncate microbenchmarks are not shown as this patch affects the
allocation path and not the free path.  A page fault microbenchmark was
tested but it showed no sigificant difference which is not surprising
given that the __GFP_COLD branches are a miniscule percentage of the
fault path.

Rajat Jain 95b982b451 PM / s2idle: Clear the events_check_enabled flag
Problem: This flag does not get cleared currently in the suspend or
resume path in the following cases:

 * In case some driver's suspend routine returns an error.
 * Successful s2idle case
 * etc?

Why is this a problem: What happens is that the next suspend attempt
could fail even though the user did not enable the flag by writing to
/sys/power/wakeup_count. This is 1 use case how the issue can be seen
(but similar use case with driver suspend failure can be thought of):

 1. Read /sys/power/wakeup_count
 2. echo count > /sys/power/wakeup_count
 3. echo freeze > /sys/power/wakeup_count
 4. Let the system suspend, and wakeup the system using some wake source
    that calls pm_wakeup_event() e.g. power button or something.
 5. Note that the combined wakeup count would be incremented due
    to the pm_wakeup_event() in the resume path.
 6. After resuming the events_check_enabled flag is still set.

At this point if the user attempts to freeze again (without writing to
/sys/power/wakeup_count), the suspend would fail even though there has
been no wake event since the past resume.

Address that by clearing the flag just before a resume is completed,
so that it is always cleared for the corner cases mentioned above.

Greg Kroah-Hartman b24413180f License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no license
Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which
makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license.

By default all files without license information are under the default
license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2.

Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0'
SPDX license identifier.  The SPDX identifier is a legally binding
shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text.

This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and
Philippe Ombredanne.

How this work was done:

Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of
the use cases:
 - file had no licensing information it it.
 - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it,
 - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information,

Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases
where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license
had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords.

The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to
a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the
output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX
tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne.  Philippe prepared the
base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files.

The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files
assessed.  Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner
results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s)
to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not
immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.

Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was:
 - Files considered eligible had to be source code files.
 - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5
   lines of source
 - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5
   lines).

All documentation files were explicitly excluded.

The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license
identifiers to apply.

 - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was
   considered to have no license information in it, and the top level
   COPYING file license applied.

   For non */uapi/* files that summary was:

   SPDX license identifier                            # files

   and resulted in the first patch in this series.

 - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became
   the concluded license(s).

 - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a
   license but the other didn't, or they both detected different
   licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred.

 - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file
   resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and
   which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics).

 - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was
   confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.

 - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier,
   the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later
   in time.

In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the
spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the
source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation
by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.

Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from
FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners
disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights.  The
Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so
they are related.

Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets
for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the
files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks
in about 15000 files.

In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have
copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the
correct identifier.

Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual
inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch
version early this week with:
 - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected
   license ids and scores
 - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+
   files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct
 - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license
   was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied
   SPDX license was correct

This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction.  This
worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the
different types of files to be modified.

These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg.  Thomas wrote a script to
parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the
format that the file expected.  This script was further refined by Greg
based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to
distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different
comment types.)  Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to
generate the patches.

Viresh Kumar 7813dd6fc7 PM / OPP: Move the OPP directory out of power/
The drivers/base/power/ directory is special and contains code related
to power management core like system suspend/resume, hibernation, etc.
It was fine to keep the OPP code inside it when we had just one file for
it, but it is growing now and already has a directory for itself.

Lets move it directly under drivers/ directory, just like cpufreq and
cpuidle.

Rafael J. Wysocki 87cbde8d90 PM / s2idle: Invoke the ->wake() platform callback earlier
The role of the ->wake() platform callback for suspend-to-idle is to
deal with possible spurious wakeups, among other things.  The ACPI
implementation of it, acpi_s2idle_wake(), additionally checks the
conditions for entering the Low Power S0 Idle state by the platform
and reports the ones that have not been met.

However, the ->wake() platform callback is invoked after calling
dpm_noirq_resume_devices(), which means that the power states of some
devices may have changed since s2idle_enter() returned, so some unmet
Low Power S0 Idle conditions may be reported incorrectly as a result
of that.

To avoid these false positives, reorder the invocations of the
dpm_noirq_resume_devices() routine and the ->wake() platform callback
in s2idle_loop().

Peter Zijlstra 50e7663233 sched/cpuset/pm: Fix cpuset vs. suspend-resume bugs
Cpusets vs. suspend-resume is _completely_ broken. And it got noticed
because it now resulted in non-cpuset usage breaking too.

On suspend cpuset_cpu_inactive() doesn't call into
cpuset_update_active_cpus() because it doesn't want to move tasks about,
there is no need, all tasks are frozen and won't run again until after
we've resumed everything.

But this means that when we finally do call into
cpuset_update_active_cpus() after resuming the last frozen cpu in
cpuset_cpu_active(), the top_cpuset will not have any difference with
the cpu_active_mask and this it will not in fact do _anything_.

So the cpuset configuration will not be restored. This was largely
hidden because we would unconditionally create identity domains and
mobile users would not in fact use cpusets much. And servers what do use
cpusets tend to not suspend-resume much.

An addition problem is that we'd not in fact wait for the cpuset work to
finish before resuming the tasks, allowing spurious migrations outside
of the specified domains.

Fix the rebuild by introducing cpuset_force_rebuild() and fix the
ordering with cpuset_wait_for_hotplug().

Christoph Hellwig 74d46992e0 block: replace bi_bdev with a gendisk pointer and partitions index
This way we don't need a block_device structure to submit I/O.  The
block_device has different life time rules from the gendisk and
request_queue and is usually only available when the block device node
is open.  Other callers need to explicitly create one (e.g. the lightnvm
passthrough code, or the new nvme multipathing code).

For the actual I/O path all that we need is the gendisk, which exists
once per block device.  But given that the block layer also does
partition remapping we additionally need a partition index, which is
used for said remapping in generic_make_request.

Note that all the block drivers generally want request_queue or
sometimes the gendisk, so this removes a layer of indirection all
over the stack.

Srinivas Pandruvada 726fb6b4f2 ACPI / PM: Check low power idle constraints for debug only
For SoC to achieve its lowest power platform idle state a set of hardware
preconditions must be met. These preconditions or constraints can be
obtained by issuing a device specific method (_DSM) with function "1".
Refer to the document provided in the link below.

Here during initialization (from attach() callback of LPS0 device), invoke
function 1 to get the device constraints. Each enabled constraint is
stored in a table.

The devices in this table are used to check whether they were in required
minimum state, while entering suspend. This check is done from platform
freeze wake() callback, only when /sys/power/pm_debug_messages attribute
is non zero.

If any constraint is not met and device is ACPI power managed then it
prints the device information to kernel logs.

Also if debug is enabled in acpi/sleep.c, the constraint table and state
of each device on wake is dumped in kernel logs.

Since pm_debug_messages_on setting is used as condition to check
constraints outside kernel/power/main.c, pm_debug_messages_on is changed
to a global variable.

Johannes Weiner d507e2ebd2 mm: fix global NR_SLAB_.*CLAIMABLE counter reads
As Tetsuo points out:
 "Commit 385386cff4 ("mm: vmstat: move slab statistics from zone to
  node counters") broke "Slab:" field of /proc/meminfo . It shows nearly
  0kB"

In addition to /proc/meminfo, this problem also affects the slab
counters OOM/allocation failure info dumps, can cause early -ENOMEM from
overcommit protection, and miscalculate image size requirements during
suspend-to-disk.

This is because the patch in question switched the slab counters from
the zone level to the node level, but forgot to update the global
accessor functions to read the aggregate node data instead of the
aggregate zone data.

Use global_node_page_state() to access the global slab counters.

Rafael J. Wysocki e870c6c87c ACPI / PM: Prefer suspend-to-idle over S3 on some systems
Modify the ACPI system sleep support setup code to select
suspend-to-idle as the default system sleep state if
(1) the ACPI_FADT_LOW_POWER_S0 flag is set in the FADT and
(2) the Low Power Idle S0 _DSM interface has been discovered and
(3) the default sleep state was not selected from the kernel command
line.

The main motivation for this change is that systems where the (1) and
(2) conditions are met typically ship with OSes that don't exercise
the S3 path in the platform firmware which remains untested and turns
out to be non-functional at least in some cases.

pm_states[], but that may be confusing if the mem_sleep sysfs

To avoid the confusion, use mem_sleep_labels[] strings in those
messages instead.

useful for system sleep debugging, so print them only when the other

duration, because in general timekeeping may be suspeded and
resumed for multiple times during one system suspend-resume cycle.

Debug messages from the system suspend/hibernation infrastructure can
fill up the entire kernel log buffer in some cases and anyway they
are only useful for debugging.  They depend on CONFIG_PM_DEBUG, but
that is set as a rule as some generally useful diagnostic facilities
depend on it too.

For this reason, avoid printing those messages by default, but make
it possible to turn them on as needed with the help of a new sysfs
attribute under /sys/power/.

This is useful for platform specific drivers that may need to take a
slightly different suspend/resume path based on the system's
suspend/resume state being entered.

Rafael J. Wysocki 33e4f80ee6 ACPI / PM: Ignore spurious SCI wakeups from suspend-to-idle
The ACPI SCI (System Control Interrupt) is set up as a wakeup IRQ
during suspend-to-idle transitions and, consequently, any events
signaled through it wake up the system from that state.  However,
on some systems some of the events signaled via the ACPI SCI while
suspended to idle should not cause the system to wake up.  In fact,
quite often they should just be discarded.

Arguably, systems should not resume entirely on such events, but in
order to decide which events really should cause the system to resume
and which are spurious, it is necessary to resume up to the point
when ACPI SCIs are actually handled and processed, which is after
executing dpm_resume_noirq() in the system resume path.

For this reasons, add a loop around freeze_enter() in which the
platforms can process events signaled via multiplexed IRQ lines
like the ACPI SCI and add suspend-to-idle hooks that can be
used for this purpose to struct platform_freeze_ops.

In the ACPI case, the ->wake hook is used for checking if the SCI
has triggered while suspended and deferring the interrupt-induced
system wakeup until the events signaled through it are actually

on Dell XPS 13 (9343) reported by Dominik.

The issue the commit in question attempted to address is real and
will need to be taken care of going forward, but evidently more work
is needed for this purpose.

Rafael J. Wysocki eed4d47efe ACPI / sleep: Ignore spurious SCI wakeups from suspend-to-idle
The ACPI SCI (System Control Interrupt) is set up as a wakeup IRQ
during suspend-to-idle transitions and, consequently, any events
signaled through it wake up the system from that state.  However,
on some systems some of the events signaled via the ACPI SCI while
suspended to idle should not cause the system to wake up.  In fact,
quite often they should just be discarded.

Arguably, systems should not resume entirely on such events, but in
order to decide which events really should cause the system to resume
and which are spurious, it is necessary to resume up to the point
when ACPI SCIs are actually handled and processed, which is after
executing dpm_resume_noirq() in the system resume path.

For this reasons, add a loop around freeze_enter() in which the
platforms can process events signaled via multiplexed IRQ lines
like the ACPI SCI and add suspend-to-idle hooks that can be
used for this purpose to struct platform_freeze_ops.

In the ACPI case, the ->wake hook is used for checking if the SCI
has triggered while suspended and deferring the interrupt-induced
system wakeup until the events signaled through it are actually
processed sufficiently to decide whether or not the system should
resume.  In turn, the ->sync hook allows all of the relevant event
queues to be flushed so as to prevent events from being missed due
to race conditions.

In addition to that, some ACPI code processing wakeup events needs
to be modified to use the "hard" version of wakeup triggers, so that
it will cause a system resume to happen on device-induced wakeup

Geert Uytterhoeven 8cff66791a PM / sleep: Fix test_suspend after sleep state rework
When passing "test_suspend=mem" to the kernel:

    PM: can't test 'mem' suspend state

and the suspend test is not run.

Commit 406e79385f ("PM / sleep: System sleep state selection
interface rework") changed pm_labels[] from a contiguous NULL-terminated
array to a sparse array (with the first element unpopulated), breaking
the assumptions of the iterator in setup_test_suspend().

Iterate from PM_SUSPEND_MIN to PM_SUSPEND_MAX - 1 to fix this.

Both of these options are poorly named. The features they provide are
necessary for system security and should not be considered debug only.
Change the names to CONFIG_STRICT_KERNEL_RWX and

There are systems in which the platform doesn't support any special
sleep states, so suspend-to-idle (PM_SUSPEND_FREEZE) is the only
available system sleep state.  However, some user space frameworks
only use the "mem" and (sometimes) "standby" sleep state labels, so
the users of those systems need to modify user space in order to be
able to use system suspend at all and that may be a pain in practice.

Commit 0399d4db3e (PM / sleep: Introduce command line argument for
sleep state enumeration) attempted to address this problem by adding
a command line argument to change the meaning of the "mem" string in
/sys/power/state to make it trigger suspend-to-idle (instead of
suspend-to-RAM).

However, there also are systems in which the platform does support
special sleep states, but suspend-to-idle is the preferred one anyway
(it even may save more energy than the platform-provided sleep states
in some cases) and the above commit doesn't help in those cases.

For this reason, rework the system sleep state selection interface
again (but preserve backwards compatibiliby).  Namely, add a new
sysfs file, /sys/power/mem_sleep, that will control the system
suspend mode triggered by writing "mem" to /sys/power/state (in
analogy with what /sys/power/disk does for hibernation).  Make it
select suspend-to-RAM ("deep" sleep) by default (if supported) and
fall back to suspend-to-idle ("s2idle") otherwise and add a new

Jon Hunter 1adb469b9b PM / suspend: Fix missing KERN_CONT for suspend message
Commit 4bcc595ccd (printk: reinstate KERN_CONT for printing
continuation lines) exposed a missing KERN_CONT from one of the
messages shown on entering suspend. With v4.9-rc1, the 'done.' shown
after syncing the filesystems no longer appears as a continuation but
a new message with its own timestamp.

Fix this by adding the KERN_CONT log level for the 'done.' part of the
message seen after syncing filesystems. While we are at it, convert
these suspend printks to pr_info and pr_cont, respectively.

Michal Hocko 7d2e7a22cf oom, suspend: fix oom_killer_disable vs. pm suspend properly
Commit 7407054209 ("oom, suspend: fix oom_reaper vs.
oom_killer_disable race") has workaround an existing race between
oom_killer_disable and oom_reaper by adding another round of
try_to_freeze_tasks after the oom killer was disabled.  This was the
easiest thing to do for a late 4.7 fix.  Let's fix it properly now.

After "oom: keep mm of the killed task available" we no longer have to
call exit_oom_victim from the oom reaper because we have stable mm
available and hide the oom_reaped mm by MMF_OOM_SKIP flag.  So let's
remove exit_oom_victim and the race described in the above commit
doesn't exist anymore if.

Unfortunately this alone is not sufficient for the oom_killer_disable
usecase because now we do not have any reliable way to reach
exit_oom_victim (the victim might get stuck on a way to exit for an
unbounded amount of time).  OOM killer can cope with that by checking mm
flags and move on to another victim but we cannot do the same for
oom_killer_disable as we would lose the guarantee of no further
interference of the victim with the rest of the system.  What we can do
instead is to cap the maximum time the oom_killer_disable waits for
victims.  The only current user of this function (pm suspend) already
has a concept of timeout for back off so we can reuse the same value
there.

Let's drop set_freezable for the oom_reaper kthread because it is no
longer needed as the reaper doesn't wake or thaw any processes.

Anisse Astier 1ad1410f63 PM / Hibernate: allow hibernation with PAGE_POISONING_ZERO
PAGE_POISONING_ZERO disables zeroing new pages on alloc, they are
poisoned (zeroed) as they become available.
In the hibernate use case, free pages will appear in the system without
being cleared, left there by the loading kernel.

This patch will make sure free pages are cleared on resume when
PAGE_POISONING_ZERO is enabled. We free the pages just after resume
because we can't do it later: going through any device resume code might
allocate some memory and invalidate the free pages bitmap.

Thus we don't need to disable hibernation when PAGE_POISONING_ZERO is
enabled.

Sudeep Holla fa7fd6fa38 PM / sleep: enable suspend-to-idle even without registered suspend_ops
Suspend-to-idle (aka the "freeze" sleep state) is a system sleep state
in which all of the processors enter deepest possible idle state and
wait for interrupts right after suspending all the devices.

There is no hard requirement for a platform to support and register
platform specific suspend_ops to enter suspend-to-idle/freeze state.
Only deeper system sleep states like PM_SUSPEND_STANDBY and
PM_SUSPEND_MEM rely on such low level support/implementation.

suspend-to-idle can be entered as along as all the devices can be
suspended. This patch enables the support for suspend-to-idle even on
systems that don't have any low level support for deeper system sleep
states and/or don't register any platform specific suspend_ops.

Tejun Heo c86d06ba28 PM / QoS: avoid calling cancel_delayed_work_sync() during early boot
of_clk_init() ends up calling into pm_qos_update_request() very early
during boot where irq is expected to stay disabled.
pm_qos_update_request() uses cancel_delayed_work_sync() which
correctly assumes that irq is enabled on invocation and
unconditionally disables and re-enables it.

Gate cancel_delayed_work_sync() invocation with kevented_up() to avoid
enabling irq unexpectedly during early boot.

rtree_next_node() walks the linked list of leaf nodes to find the next
block of pages in the struct memory_bitmap. If it walks off the end of
the list of nodes, it walks the list of memory zones to find the next
region of memory. If it walks off the end of the list of zones, it
returns false.

This leaves the struct bm_position's node and zone pointers pointing
at their respective struct list_heads in struct mem_zone_bm_rtree.

memory_bm_find_bit() uses struct bm_position's node and zone pointers
to avoid walking lists and trees if the next bit appears in the same
node/zone. It handles these values being stale.

Swap rtree_next_node()s 'step then test' to 'test-next then step',
this means if we reach the end of memory we return false and leave
the node and zone pointers as they were.

This fixes a panic on resume using AMD Seattle with 64K pages:

Thomas Garnier 62822e2ec4 PM / hibernate: Restore processor state before using per-CPU variables
Restore the processor state before calling any other functions to
ensure per-CPU variables can be used with KASLR memory randomization.

Tracing functions use per-CPU variables (GS based on x86) and one was
called just before restoring the processor state fully. It resulted
in a double fault when both the tracing & the exception handler
functions tried to use a per-CPU variable.

Mel Gorman 599d0c954f mm, vmscan: move LRU lists to node
This moves the LRU lists from the zone to the node and related data such
as counters, tracing, congestion tracking and writeback tracking.

Unfortunately, due to reclaim and compaction retry logic, it is
necessary to account for the number of LRU pages on both zone and node
logic.  Most reclaim logic is based on the node counters but the retry
logic uses the zone counters which do not distinguish inactive and
active sizes.  It would be possible to leave the LRU counters on a
per-zone basis but it's a heavier calculation across multiple cache
lines that is much more frequent than the retry checks.

Other than the LRU counters, this is mostly a mechanical patch but note
that it introduces a number of anomalies.  For example, the scans are
per-zone but using per-node counters.  We also mark a node as congested
when a zone is congested.  This causes weird problems that are fixed
later but is easier to review.

In the event that there is excessive overhead on 32-bit systems due to
the nodes being on LRU then there are two potential solutions

1. Long-term isolation of highmem pages when reclaim is lowmem

   When pages are skipped, they are immediately added back onto the LRU
   list. If lowmem reclaim persisted for long periods of time, the same
   highmem pages get continually scanned. The idea would be that lowmem
   keeps those pages on a separate list until a reclaim for highmem pages
   arrives that splices the highmem pages back onto the LRU. It potentially
   could be implemented similar to the UNEVICTABLE list.

   That would reduce the skip rate with the potential corner case is that
   highmem pages have to be scanned and reclaimed to free lowmem slab pages.

2. Linear scan lowmem pages if the initial LRU shrink fails

   This will break LRU ordering but may be preferable and faster during
   memory pressure than skipping LRU pages.

   - Make intel_pstate update the cpu_frequency tracepoint even if the
     frequency doesn't change to avoid confusing powertop (Rafael
     Wysocki).

   - Clean up the usage of __init/__initdata in intel_pstate, mark some
     of its internal variables as __read_mostly and drop an unused
     structure element from it (Jisheng Zhang, Carsten Emde).

   - Clean up the usage of some duplicate MSR symbols in intel_pstate

   - Update/fix the powernv, s3c24xx and mvebu cpufreq drivers (Akshay

   - Fix a regression (introduced during the 4.5 cycle) in the
     pcc-cpufreq driver by reverting the problematic commit (Andreas

   - Add support for Denverton and Ivy Bridge server to the Intel RAPL

   - Fix resume from hibernation on x86-64 by making the CPU offline
     during resume avoid using MONITOR/MWAIT in the "play dead" loop

   - Make memory management during resume from hibernation more

   - Add debug features that should help to detect problems related to

     other notifiers returns an error at that time (Lianwei Wang).

   - Improve suspend-related debug printout in the tasks freezer and
     clean up suspend-related console handling (Roger Lu, Borislav

   - Update the AnalyzeSuspend script in the kernel sources to version
     4.2 (Todd Brandt).

   - Modify the generic power domains framework to make it handle system
     suspend/resume better (Ulf Hansson).

   - Make the runtime PM framework avoid resuming devices synchronously
     when user space changes the runtime PM settings for them and
     improve its error reporting (Rafael Wysocki, Linus Walleij).

   - Fix error paths in devfreq drivers (exynos, exynos-ppmu,
     exynos-bus) and in the core, make some devfreq code explicitly

   - Add DT support to the generic PM clocks management code and make it
     export some more symbols (Jon Hunter, Paul Gortmaker).

   - Make the PCI PM core code slightly more robust against possible
     driver errors (Andy Shevchenko).

   - Make it possible to change DESTDIR and PREFIX in turbostat (Andy
