Add `bpftool gen skeleton` command, which takes in compiled BPF .o object file
and dumps a BPF skeleton struct and related code to work with that skeleton.
Skeleton itself is tailored to a specific structure of provided BPF object
file, containing accessors (just plain struct fields) for every map and
program, as well as dedicated space for bpf_links. If BPF program is using
global variables, corresponding structure definitions of compatible memory
layout are emitted as well, making it possible to initialize and subsequently
read/update global variables values using simple and clear C syntax for
accessing fields. This skeleton majorly improves usability of
opening/loading/attaching of BPF object, as well as interacting with it
throughout the lifetime of loaded BPF object.

This provides great usability improvements:
- no need to look up maps and programs by name, instead just
my_obj->maps.my_map or my_obj->progs.my_prog would give necessary
bpf_map/bpf_program pointers, which user can pass to existing libbpf APIs;
- pre-defined places for bpf_links, which will be automatically populated for
program types that libbpf knows how to attach automatically (currently
tracepoints, kprobe/kretprobe, raw tracepoint and tracing programs). On
tearing down skeleton, all active bpf_links will be destroyed (meaning BPF
programs will be detached, if they are attached). For cases in which libbpf
doesn't know how to auto-attach BPF program, user can manually create link
after loading skeleton and they will be auto-detached on skeleton
destruction:

- it's extremely easy and convenient to work with global data from userspace
now. Both for read-only and read/write variables, it's possible to
pre-initialize them before skeleton is loaded:

After load, if kernel supports mmap() for BPF arrays, user can still read
(and write for .bss and .data) variables values, but at that point it will
be directly mmap()-ed to BPF array, backing global variables. This allows to
seamlessly exchange data with BPF side. From userspace program's POV, all
the pointers and memory contents stay the same, but mapped kernel memory
changes to point to created map.
If kernel doesn't yet support mmap() for BPF arrays, it's still possible to
use those data section structs to pre-initialize .bss, .data, and .rodata,
but after load their pointers will be reset to NULL, allowing user code to
gracefully handle this condition, if necessary.

Few libbpf APIs are not public but currently exposed through libbpf.h to be
used by bpftool. Move them to libbpf_internal.h, where intent of being
non-stable and non-public is much more obvious.

This patch implements lookup by name for maps and changes the behavior of
lookups by tag to be consistent with prog subcommands. Similarly to
program subcommands, the show and dump commands will return all maps with
the given name (or tag), whereas other commands will error out if several
maps have the same name (resp. tag).
When a map has BTF info, it is dumped in JSON with available BTF info.
This patch requires that all matched maps have BTF info before switching
the output format to JSON.

When working with frequently modified BPF programs, both the ID and the
tag may change. bpftool currently doesn't provide a "stable" way to match
such programs.
This patch implements lookup by name for programs. The show and dump
commands will return all programs with the given name, whereas other
commands will error out if several programs have the same name.

When several BPF programs have the same tag, bpftool matches only the
first (in ID order). This patch changes that behavior such that dump and
show commands return all matched programs. Commands that require a single
program (e.g., pin and attach) will error out if given a tag that matches
several. bpftool prog dump will also error out if file or visual are
given and several programs have the given tag.
In the case of the dump command, a program header is added before each
dump only if the tag matches several programs; this patch doesn't change
the output if a single program matches. The output when several
programs match thus looks as follows.

When the kptr_restrict sysctl is set, the kernel can fail to return
jited_ksyms or jited_prog_insns, but still have positive values in
nr_jited_ksyms and jited_prog_len. This causes bpftool to crash when
trying to dump the program because it only checks the len fields not
the actual pointers to the instructions and ksyms.
Fix this by adding the missing checks.

LIBBPF_OPTS is implemented as a mix of field declaration and memset
+ assignment. This makes it neither variable declaration nor purely
statements, which is a problem, because you can't mix it with either
other variable declarations nor other function statements, because C90
compiler mode emits warning on mixing all that together.
This patch changes LIBBPF_OPTS into a strictly declaration of variable
and solves this problem, as can be seen in case of bpftool, which
previously would emit compiler warning, if done this way (LIBBPF_OPTS as
part of function variables declaration block).
This patch also renames LIBBPF_OPTS into DECLARE_LIBBPF_OPTS to follow
kernel convention for similar macros more closely.

As part of libbpf in 5e61f27070 ("libbpf: stop enforcing kern_version,
populate it for users") non-LIBBPF_API __bpf_object__open_xattr() API
was removed from libbpf.h header. This broke bpftool, which relied on
that function. This patch fixes the build by switching to newly added
bpf_object__open_file() which provides the same capabilities, but is
official and future-proof API.

In bpftool's Makefile, $(LIBS) includes $(LIBBPF), therefore the library
is used twice in the linking command. No need to have $(LIBBPF) (from
$^) on that command, let's do with "$(OBJS) $(LIBS)" (but move $(LIBBPF)
_before_ the -l flags in $(LIBS)).

When building "tools/bpf" from the top of the Linux repository, the
build system passes a value for the $(OUTPUT) Makefile variable to
tools/bpf/Makefile and tools/bpf/bpftool/Makefile, which results in
generating "libbpf/" (for bpftool) and "feature/" (bpf and bpftool)
directories inside the tree.
This commit adds such directories to the relevant .gitignore files, and
edits the Makefiles to ensure they are removed on "make clean". The use
of "rm" is also made consistent throughout those Makefiles (relies on
the $(RM) variable, use "--" to prevent interpreting
$(OUTPUT)/$(DESTDIR) as options.

There are a number of alternative "make" invocations that can be used to
compile bpftool. The following invocations are expected to work:
- through the kbuild system, from the top of the repository
(make tools/bpf)
- by telling make to change to the bpftool directory
(make -C tools/bpf/bpftool)
- by building the BPF tools from tools/
(cd tools && make bpf)
- by running make from bpftool directory
(cd tools/bpf/bpftool && make)
Additionally, setting the O or OUTPUT variables should tell the build
system to use a custom output path, for each of these alternatives.
The following patch fixes the following invocations:
$ make tools/bpf
$ make tools/bpf O=<dir>
$ make -C tools/bpf/bpftool OUTPUT=<dir>
$ make -C tools/bpf/bpftool O=<dir>
$ cd tools/ && make bpf O=<dir>
$ cd tools/bpf/bpftool && make OUTPUT=<dir>

After this commit, the build still fails for two variants when passing
the OUTPUT variable:

In order to remember and check what make invocations are supposed to
work, and to document the ones which do not, a new script is added to
the BPF selftests. Note that some invocations require the kernel to be
configured, so the script skips them if no .config file is found.

- In make_and_clean(), set $ERROR to 1 when "make" returns non-zero,
even if the binary was produced.
- Run "make clean" from the correct directory (bpf/ instead of bpftool/,

Bpftool calls the toplevel Makefile to get the kernel version for the
sources it is built from. But when the utility is built from the top of
the kernel repository, it may dump the following error message for
certain architectures (including x86):
$ make tools/bpf

This does not prevent bpftool compilation, but may feel disconcerting.
The "checkbin" arch-dependent target is not supposed to be called for
target "kernelversion", which is a simple "echo" of the version number.
It turns out this is caused by the make invocation in tools/bpf/bpftool,
which attempts to find implicit rules to apply. Extract from debug

When listing maps, read their "frozen" status from procfs, and tell if
maps are frozen.
As commit log for map freezing command mentions that the feature might
be extended with flags (e.g. for write-only instead of read-only) in the
future, use an integer and not a boolean for JSON output.

Add a "btf list" (alias: "btf show") subcommand to bpftool in order to
dump all BTF objects loaded on a system.
When running the command, hash tables are built in bpftool to retrieve
all the associations between BTF objects and BPF maps and programs. This
allows for printing all such associations when listing the BTF objects.
The command is added at the top of the subcommands for "bpftool btf", so
that typing only "bpftool btf" also comes down to listing the programs.
We could not have this with the previous command ("dump"), which
required a BTF object id, so it should not break any previous behaviour.
This also makes the "btf" command behaviour consistent with "prog" or
"map".
Bash completion is updated to use "bpftool btf" instead of "bpftool
prog" to list the BTF ids, as it looks more consistent.

Some functions in bpftool have a "__printf()" format attributes to tell
the compiler they should expect printf()-like arguments. But because
these attributes are not used for the function prototypes in the header
files, the compiler does not run the checks everywhere the functions are
used, and some mistakes on format string and corresponding arguments
slipped in over time.
Let's move the __printf() attributes to the correct places.
Note: We add guards around the definition of GCC_VERSION in
tools/include/linux/compiler-gcc.h to prevent a conflict in jit_disasm.c
on GCC_VERSION from headers pulled via libbfd.

There is one call to the p_err() function in detect_common_prefix()
where the message to print is passed directly as the first argument,
without using a format string. This is harmless, but may trigger
warnings if the "__printf()" attribute is used correctly for the p_err()
function. Let's fix it by using a "%s" format string.

The format string passed to one call to the p_err() function in
query_flow_dissector() does not match the value that should be printed,
resulting in some garbage integer being printed instead of
strerror(errno) if /proc/self/ns/net cannot be open. Let's fix the
format string.

By this commit, using `bpftool net attach`, user can attach XDP prog on
interface. New type of enum 'net_attach_type' has been made, as stat ted at
cover-letter, the meaning of 'attach' is, prog will be attached on interface.
With 'overwrite' option at argument, attached XDP program could be replaced.
Added new helper 'net_parse_dev' to parse the network device at argument.
BPF prog will be attached through libbpf 'bpf_set_link_xdp_fd'.

Compile bpftool with $(EXTRA_WARNINGS), as defined in
scripts/Makefile.include, and fix the new warnings produced.
Simply leave -Wswitch-enum out of the warning list, as we have several
switch-case structures where it is not desirable to process all values
of an enum.
Remove -Wshadow from the warnings we manually add to CFLAGS, as it is
handled in $(EXTRA_WARNINGS).

bpftool requires libelf, and zlib for decompressing /proc/config.gz.
zlib is a transitive dependency via libelf, and became mandatory since
elfutils 0.165 (Jan 2016). The feature check of libelf is already done
in the elfdep target of tools/lib/bpf/Makefile, pulled in by bpftool via
a dependency on libbpf.a. Add a similar feature check for zlib.

/proc/config has never existed as far as I can see, but /proc/config.gz
is present on Arch Linux. Add support for decompressing config.gz using
zlib which is a mandatory dependency of libelf anyway. Replace existing
stdio functions with gzFile operations since the latter transparently
handles uncompressed and gzip-compressed files.

From commit 9df1c28bb7 ("bpf: add writable context for raw tracepoints"),
a new type of BPF_PROG, RAW_TRACEPOINT_WRITABLE has been added.
Since this BPF_PROG_TYPE_RAW_TRACEPOINT_WRITABLE is not listed at
bpftool's header, it causes a segfault when executing 'bpftool feature'.
This commit adds BPF_PROG_TYPE_RAW_TRACEPOINT_WRITABLE entry to
prog_type_name enum, and will eventually fixes the segfault issue.

Bash completion for proposing the "loadall" subcommand is missing. Let's
add it to the completion script.
Add a specific case to propose "load" and "loadall" for completing:
$ bpftool prog load
^ cursor is here
Otherwise, completion considers that $command is in load|loadall and
starts making related completions (file or directory names, as the
number of words on the command line is below 6), when the only suggested
keywords should be "load" and "loadall" until one has been picked and a
space entered after that to move to the next word.

The code is assuming char pointers in format, which is not always
true at least for powerpc. Fixing this by dumping the whole string
into buffer based on its format.
Please note that libopcodes code does not check return values from
fprintf callback, but as per Jakub suggestion returning -1 on allocation
failure so we do the best effort to propagate the error.

Add a new "bpftool prog run" subcommand to run a loaded program on input
data (and possibly with input context) passed by the user.
Print output data (and output context if relevant) into a file or into
the console. Print return value and duration for the test run into the
console.
A "repeat" argument can be passed to run the program several times in a
row.
The command does not perform any kind of verification based on program
type (Is this program type allowed to use an input context?) or on data
consistency (Can I work with empty input data?), this is left to the
kernel.
Example invocation:

When one of data_in or ctx_in is "-", bpftool reads from standard input,
in binary format. Other formats (JSON, hexdump) might be supported (via
an optional command line keyword like "data_fmt_in") in the future if
relevant, but this would require doing more parsing in bpftool.

In commit 9a5ab8bf1d ("tools: bpftool: turn err() and info() macros
into functions") one case of error reporting was special cased, so it
could report a lookup error for a specific key when dumping the map
element. What the code forgot to do is to wrap the key and value keys
into a JSON object, so an example output of pretty JSON dump of a
sockhash map (which does not support looking up its values) is:

The "-d" option is used to require all logs available for bpftool. So
far it meant telling libbpf to print even debug-level information. But
there is another source of info that can be made more verbose: when we
attemt to load programs with bpftool, we can pass a log_level parameter
to the verifier in order to control the amount of information that is
printed to the console.
Reuse the "-d" option to print all information the verifier can tell. At
this time, this means logs related to BPF_LOG_LEVEL1, BPF_LOG_LEVEL2 and
BPF_LOG_STATS. As mentioned in the discussion on the first version of
this set, these macros are internal to the kernel
(include/linux/bpf_verifier.h) and are not meant to be part of the
stable user API, therefore we simply use the related constants to print
whatever we can at this time, without trying to tell users what is
log_level1 or what is statistics.
Verifier logs are only used when loading programs for now (In the
future: for loading BTF objects with bpftool? Although libbpf does not
currently offer to print verifier info at debug level if no error
occurred when loading BTF objects), so bpftool.rst and bpftool-prog.rst
are the only man pages to get the update.

libbpf has three levels of priority for output messages: warn, info,
debug. By default, debug output is not printed to the console.
Add a new "--debug" (short name: "-d") option to bpftool to print libbpf
logs for all three levels.
Internally, we simply use the function provided by libbpf to replace the
default printing function by one that prints logs regardless of their
level.

combination of "warn", "info" and "debug").
- Rename option and offer a short name: -d|--debug.
- Add option description to all bpftool manual pages (instead of

Auto-complete BTF IDs for `btf dump id` sub-command. List of possible BTF

Here are series of patches that add SPDX tags to different kernel files,
based on two different things:
- SPDX entries are added to a bunch of files that we missed a year ago
that do not have any license information at all.
These were either missed because the tool saw the MODULE_LICENSE()
tag, or some EXPORT_SYMBOL tags, and got confused and thought the
file had a real license, or the files have been added since the last
big sweep, or they were Makefile/Kconfig files, which we didn't
touch last time.
- Add GPL-2.0-only or GPL-2.0-or-later tags to files where our scan
tools can determine the license text in the file itself. Where this
happens, the license text is removed, in order to cut down on the
700+ different ways we have in the kernel today, in a quest to get
rid of all of these.
These patches have been out for review on the linux-spdx@vger mailing
list, and while they were created by automatic tools, they were
hand-verified by a bunch of different people, all whom names are on the
patches are reviewers.
The reason for these "large" patches is if we were to continue to
progress at the current rate of change in the kernel, adding license
tags to individual files in different subsystems, we would be finished
in about 10 years at the earliest.
There will be more series of these types of patches coming over the next
few weeks as the tools and reviewers crunch through the more "odd"
variants of how to say "GPLv2" that developers have come up with over
the years, combined with other fun oddities (GPL + a BSD disclaimer?)
that are being unearthed, with the goal for the whole kernel to be
cleaned up.
These diffstats are not small, 3840 files are touched, over 10k lines
removed in just 24 patches.

For a host which has a lower rlimit for max locked memory (e.g., 64KB),
the following error occurs in one of our production systems:

The reason is due to low locked memory during bpf_object__probe_name()
which probes whether program name is supported in kernel or not
during __bpf_object__open_xattr().
bpftool program load already tries to relax mlock rlimit before
bpf_object__load(). Let us move set_max_rlimit() before
__bpf_object__open_xattr(), which fixed the issue here.

tools/bpf/bpftool/.gitignore has the "bpftool" pattern, which is
intended to ignore the following build artifact:
tools/bpf/bpftool/bpftool
However, the .gitignore entry is effective not only for the current
directory, but also for any sub-directories.
So, from the point of .gitignore grammar, the following check-in file
is also considered to be ignored:
tools/bpf/bpftool/bash-completion/bpftool
As the manual gitignore(5) says "Files already tracked by Git are not
affected", this is not a problem as far as Git is concerned.
However, Git is not the only program that parses .gitignore because
.gitignore is useful to distinguish build artifacts from source files.
For example, tar(1) supports the --exclude-vcs-ignore option. As of
writing, this option does not work perfectly, but it intends to create
a tarball excluding files specified by .gitignore.
So, I believe it is better to fix this issue.
You can fix it by prefixing the pattern with a slash; the leading slash
means the specified pattern is relative to the current directory.

Add new `btf dump` sub-command to bpftool. It allows to dump
human-readable low-level BTF types representation of BTF types. BTF can
be retrieved from few different sources:
- from BTF object by ID;
- from PROG, if it has associated BTF;
- from MAP, if it has associated BTF data; it's possible to narrow
down types to either key type, value type, both, or all BTF types;
- from ELF file (.BTF section).
Output format mostly follows BPF verifier log format with few notable
exceptions:
- all the type/field/param/etc names are enclosed in single quotes to
allow easier grepping and to stand out a little bit more;
- FUNC_PROTO output follows STRUCT/UNION/ENUM format of having one
line per each argument; this is more uniform and allows easy
grepping, as opposed to succinct, but inconvenient format that BPF
verifier log is using.

"bpftool map create" has an infinite loop on "while (argc)". The error
case is missing.
Symptoms: when forgetting to type the keyword 'type' in front of 'hash':

Right now there is no way to query whether BPF flow_dissector program
is attached to a network namespace or not. In previous commit, I added
support for querying that info, show it when doing `bpftool net`:

The value itself is not wrong but bpf_fd_reuseport_array_lookup_elem() can
only return it if the map was created with value_size = 8. There's nothing
bpftool can do about it. Instead of repeating this error for every key in

Commit bf598a8f0f ("bpftool: Improve handling of ENOENT on map dumps")
used print_entry_plain() in case of ENOENT. However, that commit introduces
dead code. Per-cpu maps are zero-filled. When reading them, it's all or
nothing. There will never be a case where some cpus have an entry and
others don't.
The truth is that ENOENT is an error case. Use print_entry_error() to
output the desired message. That function's "value" parameter is also
renamed to indicate that we never use it for an actual map value.
The output format is unchanged.

Linux kernel now supports statistics for BPF programs, and bpftool is
able to dump them. However, these statistics are not enabled by default,
and administrators may not know how to access them.
Add a paragraph in bpftool documentation, under the description of the
"bpftool prog show" command, to explain that such statistics are
available and that their collection is controlled via a dedicated sysctl
knob.

When trying to dump the tree of all cgroups under a given root node,
bpftool attempts to query programs of all available attach types. Some
of those attach types do not support queries, therefore several of the
calls are actually expected to fail.
Those calls set errno to EINVAL, which has no consequence for dumping
the rest of the tree. It does have consequences however if errno is
inspected at a later time. For example, bpftool batch mode relies on
errno to determine whether a command has succeeded, and whether it
should carry on with the next command. Setting errno to EINVAL when
everything worked as expected would therefore make such command fail:

To improve this, reset errno when its value is EINVAL after attempting
to show programs for all existing attach types in do_show_tree_fn().

Commit 569b0c7773 ("tools/bpftool: show btf id in program information")
made bpftool print an empty line after each program entry when listing
the BPF programs loaded on the system (plain output). This is especially
confusing when some programs have an associated BTF id, and others
don't. Let's remove the blank line.

Add the ability to bpftool to handle BTF Var and DataSec kinds
in order to dump them out of btf_dumper_type(). The value has a
single object with the section name, which itself holds an array
of variables it dumps. A single variable is an object by itself
printed along with its name. From there further type information
is dumped along with corresponding value information.

This generic extension to BPF maps allows for directly loading
an address residing inside a BPF map value as a single BPF
ldimm64 instruction!
The idea is similar to what BPF_PSEUDO_MAP_FD does today, which
is a special src_reg flag for ldimm64 instruction that indicates
that inside the first part of the double insns's imm field is a
file descriptor which the verifier then replaces as a full 64bit
address of the map into both imm parts. For the newly added
BPF_PSEUDO_MAP_VALUE src_reg flag, the idea is the following:
the first part of the double insns's imm field is again a file
descriptor corresponding to the map, and the second part of the
imm field is an offset into the value. The verifier will then
replace both imm parts with an address that points into the BPF
map value at the given value offset for maps that support this
operation. Currently supported is array map with single entry.
It is possible to support more than just single map element by
reusing both 16bit off fields of the insns as a map index, so
full array map lookup could be expressed that way. It hasn't
been implemented here due to lack of concrete use case, but
could easily be done so in future in a compatible way, since
both off fields right now have to be 0 and would correctly
denote a map index 0.
The BPF_PSEUDO_MAP_VALUE is a distinct flag as otherwise with
BPF_PSEUDO_MAP_FD we could not differ offset 0 between load of
map pointer versus load of map's value at offset 0, and changing
BPF_PSEUDO_MAP_FD's encoding into off by one to differ between
regular map pointer and map value pointer would add unnecessary
complexity and increases barrier for debugability thus less
suitable. Using the second part of the imm field as an offset
into the value does /not/ come with limitations since maximum
possible value size is in u32 universe anyway.
This optimization allows for efficiently retrieving an address
to a map value memory area without having to issue a helper call
which needs to prepare registers according to calling convention,
etc, without needing the extra NULL test, and without having to
add the offset in an additional instruction to the value base
pointer. The verifier then treats the destination register as
PTR_TO_MAP_VALUE with constant reg->off from the user passed
offset from the second imm field, and guarantees that this is
within bounds of the map value. Any subsequent operations are
normally treated as typical map value handling without anything
extra needed from verification side.
The two map operations for direct value access have been added to
array map for now. In future other types could be supported as
well depending on the use case. The main use case for this commit
is to allow for BPF loader support for global variables that
reside in .data/.rodata/.bss sections such that we can directly
load the address of them with minimal additional infrastructure
required. Loader support has been added in subsequent commits for
libbpf library.

bpf_object__for_each_map. Rename and add a correctly named
define for backward compatibility.

When prog array is updated with bpftool users often refer
to the map via the ID. Unfortunately, that's likely
to lead to confusion because prog arrays get flushed when
the last user reference is gone. If there is no other
reference bpftool will create one, update successfully
just to close the map again and have it flushed.
Warn about this case in non-JSON mode.
If the problem continues causing confusion we can remove
the support for referring to a map by ID for prog array
update completely. For now it seems like the potential
inconvenience to users who know what they're doing outweighs
the benefit.

Prog arrays don't have 'owner_prog_type' and 'owner_jited'
fields in their fdinfo when they are created. Those fields
are set and reported when first program is checked for
compatibility by bpf_prog_array_compatible().
This means that bpftool cannot expect the fields to always
be there. Currently trying to show maps on a system with
an un-owned prog array leads to a crash:

Instead of fixing the help text by tweaking argv[] indices, this
patch changes the default action to 'probe'. It makes the behavior
consistent with other subcommands, where first subcommand without
extra parameter results in 'show' action.
