From "Uwe Kleine-Knig" <u.kleine-koenig@pengutronix.de>:
this is the 2nd version of this series whose goal is to make struct
of_device_id.data const. Conceptually a driver must not modify the data
contained there so making it const is the right thing.
v1 of this series was sent with Message-id:
1342182734-321-1-git-send-email-y. Changes since then are:
- powerpc fixes
- several new consts that were found by Arnd that are possible after
patch 19.
Arnd suggested to take this series via arm-soc late for 3.6 in one go
because patch 19 depends on the former patches but is a precondition to
the latter and it fixes a few warnings. So getting it in via the
respective maintainer trees would need a much bigger coordination
effort. That means I prefer getting Acks over you taking the patch.
Vinod Koul already took
dmaengine: at_hdmac: add a few const qualifiers
that is in next-20120723 as 7fd63ccdad now. Vinod, I don't follow your
pull requests, but assuming you didn't let it already pull for 3.6 I
suggest you drop it from your queue and I just take your Ack.
This series was build tested for arm (all defconfigs) and powerpc (all
defconfigs and an allyesconfig) and grep didn't find more issues. As
before it introduces a warning in drivers/regulator/twl-regulator.c.
This driver does modify its .of_match_table when a device is bound which
doesn't fits the concept of independant devices. Arnd noticed another
new warning in drivers/scsi/qlogicpti.c that isn't that easy to resolve,
because the pointer to (now) const data is passed as first argument to
scsi_host_alloc. To fix that properly struct Scsi_Host.hostt needs to
get a const, too. Alternatively I could introduce a cast removing the
const, but I don't like that.

On some machines using a specific hardware for console screen output,
the update of the pixel frame buffer does not work correctly when
using command line edition. This may be due to a memory cache bug
in the machine on which the problem has been found, but an other
solution is possible.
This patch proposes to avoid touching directly the pixel frame buffer
and to rebuild each character using the standard putc() function
on command line edition.
The resulting code is smaller and not obviously slower (no read
access to the pixel frame buffer).
Tested on a Cubox (ARM Marvell Dove 88AP510 SoC).

OMAP Architecture code, passes a few function
pointers for UART driver to use in order to
properly implement Power Management and Wakeup
capabilities.
The problem is that those function pointers,
which are passed (ab)using platform_data on
non-DT kernels, can't be passed down to drivers
through DT.
commit e5b57c0 (serial: omap: define helpers

kernels into consideration and caused a regression
to DT kernel boot.
Fix that by (re-)adding a check for valid pdata

Everytime we're done using our TTY, we want
the pm timer to be reinitilized. By sticking
to pm_runtime_pm_autosuspend() we make sure
that this will always be the case.
The idea behind this patch is to make sure we
will always reinitialize the pm timer so that
we don't fall into a situation where pm_runtime_put()
expires right away (if timer was already about to
expire when we made the call to pm_runtime_put()).
While suspending right away wouldn't cause any
issues, reinitializing the pm timer can help us
avoiding unnecessary context save & restore
operations (which are somewhat expensive) if there's
another read/write/set_termios request coming right
after. IOW, we are trying to make sure UART is still
powered up while it's still under heavy usage.

- Removed dependency on MIPS. Driver can be used on any platform.
- Added support for SCC2681, SCC2691, SCC2692, SC28L91, SC28L92,
SC28L202, SCC68681 and SCC68692 ICs.
- Using devm_-related functions.
- Improved error handling of serial port, improved FIFO handling.
- Ability to load multiple instances of drivers.
To avoid the possibility of regression, driver SC26XX left in the
system to confirm the stability of the driver on platforms where
it is being used.

point it is only used in one specific driver, and referenced in
stale comments elsewhere. Rather than change the sunsu.c driver,
simply move the struct to be within the exclusive domain of that
driver, so it won't get inadvertently picked up and used by other
serial drivers going forward. The comments referencing the now
driver specific struct are updated accordingly.
Note that 8250.c has a struct that is similar in usage, with the

The console feature's write routing is unsafe on SMP with
the startup/shutdown call.
There could be several consumers of the console
* the kernel printk
* the init process using /dev/kmsg to call printk to show log
* shell, which open /dev/console and write with sys_write()
The shell goes into the normal uart open/write routing,
but the other two go into the console operations.
The open routing calls imx serial startup, which will write USR1/2
register without any lock and critical with imx_console_write call.
Add a spin_lock for startup/shutdown/console_write routing.

The pseries hvterm driver only registers a udbg backend (for xmon and
other low level debugging mechanisms) when hvc0 is recognized as the
firmware console at boot time, not if it's detected later on, for
example because the firmware is using a graphics card.
This can make debugging challenging especially under X11, and there's
really no good reason for that limitation, so let's hookup udbg
whenever hvc0 is detected instead.
Signed-off-by: Benjamin Herrenschmidt <benh@kernel.crashing.org>
hvc_console has two methods to instanciate the consoles.
hvc_instanciate is meant to be called at early boot, while hvc_alloc is
called for more dynamically probed objects.
Currently, it only deals with adding kernel consoles in the former case,
which means for example that if a console only uses dynamic probing, it
will never be usable as a kernel console even when specifying
console=hvc0 explicitly, which could be considered annoying...
More specifically, on pseries, we only do the early instanciate for the
console currently used by the firmware, so if you have your firmware
configured to go to a video card, for example, you cannot get your
kernel console, oops messages, etc... on your serial port or hypervisor
console, which would be handy to deal with oopses.
This fixes it by checking if hvc_console.flags & CON_ENABLED is set when
registering a new dynamic console, and if not, redo the index check and
re-register the console if the index matches, allowing console=hvcN to
work.

Without checking if the auart supports the hardware flow control or not,
the old mxs_auart_set_mctrl() asserted the RTS pin blindly.
This will causes the auart receives wrong data in the following case:
The far-end has already started the write operation, and wait for
the auart asserts the RTS pin. Then the auart starts the read operation,
but mxs_auart_set_mctrl() may be called before we set the RTSCTS in the
mxs_auart_settermios(). So the RTS pin is asserted in a wrong situation,
and we get the wrong data in the end.

that for constipated channels data will backup into the

queue but this requires filtering through all the messages on the

Currently we have no way to assign tty->port while performing tty
installation. There are two ways to provide the link tty_struct =>
tty_port. Either by calling tty_port_install from tty->ops->install or
tty_port_register_device called instead of tty_register_device when
the device is being set up after connected.
In this patch we modify most of the drivers to do the latter. When the
drivers use tty_register_device and we have tty_port already, we
switch to tty_port_register_device. So we have the tty_struct =>

This allows drivers like ttyprintk to avoid hacks to create an
unnumbered node in /dev. It used to set TTY_DRIVER_DYNAMIC_DEV in
flags and call device_create on its own. That is incorrect, because
TTY_DRIVER_DYNAMIC_DEV may be set only if tty_register_device is
called explicitly.

So now, that we have flags and know everything needed, keep a promise
and move all the tables and ports allocation from tty_register_driver
to tty_alloc_driver.
Not only that it makes sense, but we need this for
tty_port_link_device which needs tty_driver->ports but is to be called
before tty_register_driver.

Switch to the new driver allocation interface, as this is one of the
special call-sites. Here, we need TTY_DRIVER_DYNAMIC_ALLOC to not
allocate tty_driver->ports, cdevs and potentially other structures
because we reserve too many lines in pty. Instead, it provides the
tty_port<->tty_struct link in tty->ops->install already.

We need to allow drivers that use neither tty_port_install nor
tty_port_register_device to link a tty_port to a tty somehow. To
avoid a race with open, this has to be performed before
tty_register_device. But currently tty_driver->ports is allocated even
in tty_register_device because we do not know whether this is the PTY
driver. The PTY driver is special here due to an excessive count of
lines it declares to handle. We cannot handle tty_ports there this
way.
To circumvent this, we start passing tty_driver flags to
alloc_tty_driver already and we create tty_alloc_driver for this
purpose. There we can allocate tty_driver->ports and do all the magic
between tty_alloc_driver and tty_register_device. Later we will
introduce tty_port_link_device function for that purpose.
All drivers should eventually switch to this new tty driver allocation
interface.

For many cards, this saves some IO space because interrupt status port
has precedence over the rest of ports on the card. Hence it can be
mapped to a hole in I/O ports.
Here we add a kernel parameter which allows that if a user wants to.
But they need to explicitly enable it by a module parameter.

When PARMRK is set and large transfers of characters that will get
marked are being received, n_tty could drop data silently (i.e.
without reporting any error to the client). This is because
characters have the potential to take up to three bytes in the line
discipline (when they get marked with parity or framing errors), but
the amount of free space reported to tty_buffer flush_to_ldisc (via
tty->receive_room) is based on the pre-marked data size.
With this patch, the n_tty layer will no longer assume that each byte
will only take up one byte in the line discipline. Instead, it will
make an overly conservative estimate that each byte will take up
three bytes in the line discipline when PARMRK is set.

Ian Abbott found that the tty layer would explode with the right set of
parallel open and close operations. This is because we race in the
handling of tty->drivers->termios[].
Correct this by
Making tty_ldisc_release behave like nromal code (takes the lock,
does stuff, drops the lock)
Drop the tty lock earlier in tty_ldisc_release
Taking the tty mutex around the driver->termios update in all cases
Adding a WARN_ON to catch future screwups.

n_tty_receive_buf
tty->ops->flush_chars()
uart_flush_chars
uart_start
spin_lock_irqsave(&port->lock) <--- already hold this lock
Avoid this by using a dedicated lock to protect the eg20t_port structure
and IO access to its membase. This is more consistent with the 8250
driver. Ensure priv->lock is always take prior to priv->port.lock when
taken at the same time.
V2: Remove inadvertent whitespace change.
V3: Account for oops_in_progress for the private lock in
pch_console_write().
Note: Like the 8250 driver, if a printk is introduced anywhere inside
the pch_console_write() critical section, the kernel will hang
on a recursive spinlock on the private lock. The oops case is
handled by using a trylock in the oops_in_progress case.

* MCE polling driver to collect hypervisor MCE buffer and present
them to /dev/mcelog.
* Physical CPU online/offline support. When an privileged guest is

With the changes in the random tree, IRQF_SAMPLE_RANDOM is now a

low-overhead fashion; see commit 775f4b297b. The IRQF_SAMPLE_RANDOM

The loopback test mode is not implemented in all
NS16550 compatible UARTs. The 8250 driver uses the
UPF_SKIP_TEST flag to indicate this, however it is
not possible to set this flag via device-tree.
Add a new 'no-loopback-test' property, and modify

pch_uart_interrupt() takes priv->port.lock which leads to two recursive
spinlock calls if low_latency==1 or CONFIG_PREEMPT_RT_FULL=y (one
otherwise):
pch_uart_interrupt
spin_lock_irqsave(priv->port.lock, flags)
case PCH_UART_IID_RDR_TO (data ready)
handle_rx_to
push_rx
tty_port_tty_get
spin_lock_irqsave(&port->lock, flags) <--- already hold this lock
...
tty_flip_buffer_push

flush_to_ldisc
spin_lock_irqsave(&tty->buf.lock)
spin_lock_irqsave(&tty->buf.lock)
disc->ops->receive_buf(tty, char_buf)
n_tty_receive_buf
tty->ops->flush_chars()
uart_flush_chars
uart_start
spin_lock_irqsave(&port->lock) <--- already hold this lock
Avoid this by using a dedicated lock to protect the eg20t_port structure
and IO access to its membase. This is more consistent with the 8250
driver. Ensure priv->lock is always take prior to priv->port.lock when
taken at the same time.
V2: Remove inadvertent whitespace change.
V3: Account for oops_in_progress for the private lock in
pch_console_write().
Note: Like the 8250 driver, if a printk is introduced anywhere inside
the pch_console_write() critical section, the kernel will hang
on a recursive spinlock on the private lock. The oops case is
handled by using a trylock in the oops_in_progress case.

This has *no* function in the PTY driver yet. However as the tty
buffers will move to the tty_port structure, we will need tty_port for
all TTYs in the system, PTY inclusive.
For PTYs this is ensured by allocating 2 tty_port's in pty_install,
i.e. where the tty->link is allocated. Both tty_port's are properly
assigned to each end of the tty.
Freeing is done at the same place where tty is freed, i.e. in
tty->ops->cleanup.
This means BTW that tty_port does not outlive TTY in PTY. This might
be a subject to change in the future if we see some problems.

There are currently two instances of code which handles PTY install.
One for the legacy BSD PTY's, one for unix98's PTY's. Both of them are
very similar and differ only in termios allocation and handling.
Since we will need to allocate a tty_port at that place, this would
require editing two places with the same pattern. Instead, let us move
the implementation to one common place and call it from both places.

We had a boot regression in Ux500 in the merge window because
two orthogonal pin control schemes for the PL011 were merged
at the same time:
- One using the .init() and .exit() hooks into the platform
for Ux500 putting the pins into default vs sleep state
respectively as the port was started/stopped.
commit a09806607f
"ARM: ux500: switch to using pinctrl for uart0"
- One hogging the default setting at PL011 probe()
commit 258e055111
"serial: amba-pl011: adopt pinctrl support"
To get a solution that works for both let's scrap the stuff
in the platform callbacks, instead have the driver itself
select default and sleep states when the port is
started/stopped. Hopefully this works for all clients.
Platform callbacks are bad for device tree migration anyway,
so this rids us of another problem in Ux500.

Among the key features for this patch series is a sizable patchset for
Lantiq which among other things introduces support for Lantiq's
flagship product, the FALCON SOC. It also means that the opensource
developers behind this patchset have overtaken Lantiq's competing

Less noteworthy the ath79 patchset which adds support for a few more
chip variants, cleanups and fixes. Finally the usual dose of tweaking

because tty_init_dev locks and returns a locked tty. As far as I can

"It was good that we could support MCA machines back in the day, but
realistically, nobody is using them anymore. They were mostly limited
to 386-sx 16MHz CPU and some 486 class machines and never more than
64MB of RAM. Even the enthusiast hobbyist community seems to have
dried up close to ten years ago, based on what you can find searching
various websites dedicated to the relatively short lived hardware.
So lets remove the support relating to CONFIG_MCA. There is no point
carrying this forward, wasting cycles doing routine maintenance on it;
wasting allyesconfig build time on validating it, wasting I/O on git
grep'ping over it, and so on."
Let's see if anybody screams. It generally has compiled, and James
Bottomley pointed out that there was a MCA extension from NCR that
allowed for up to 4GB of memory and PPro-class machines. So in *theory*
there may be users out there.
But even James (technically listed as a maintainer) doesn't actually
have a system, and while Alan Cox claims to have a machine in his cellar
that he offered to anybody who wants to take it off his hands, he didn't
argue for keeping MCA support either.
So we could bring it back. But somebody had better speak up and talk
about how they have actually been using said MCA hardware with modern
kernels for us to do that. And David already took the patch to delete

There is quite a bit of net addition of code for each platform being
added to the pinctrl subsystem. but the payback comes later when adding
new boards can be done by only providing new device trees instead.

Add devicetree and handling for our new clkdev clocks. The patch is rather
straightforward. .of_match_table is set and the 3 irqs are now loaded from the
devicetree.
This series converts the lantiq target to clkdev amongst other things. The
driver needs to handle two clocks now. The fpi bus clock used to derive the
divider and the clock gate needed on some socs to make the secondary port work.

In doing the evt2irq() + muxed vector conversion for various port types
it became apparent that some of the legacy port types will presently
error out due to the irq requesting logic attempting to acquire the
non-existent BRI IRQ. This adds some sanity checks to the request/free
path to ensure that non-existence of a source in itself is not an error.
This should restore functionality for legacy PORT_SCI ports.

This is V2 of the Emma Mobile 8250 platform driver.
The hardware itself has according to the data sheet
up to 64 byte FIFOs but at this point we only make
use of the 16550 compatible mode.
To support this piece of hardware the common UART
registers need to be remapped, and the access size
differences need to be handled.
The DLL and DLM registers can due to offset collision
not be remapped easily, and because of that this
driver makes use of ->dl_read() and ->dl_write()
callbacks. This in turn requires a registration
function that takes 8250-specific paramenters.
Future potential enhancements include DT support,
early platform driver console and fine grained PM.

vt: Fix deadlock on scroll-lock
Fixing the locking accidentally replaced a race in the scroll
lock handling with a deadlock. Turn it back into a race for
now.
The basic problem is that there are two paths into the tty
stop/start helpers. One via the tty layer ^S/^Q handling
where we need to take the kbd_event_lock and one via the
special keyboard handler for fn_hold where we already hold
it. Probably we need to split out into a separate LED lock
but for now just go back to the race as it's a bit close
to release.

We noticed that we were loosing data at speed less than 2400 baud.
It turned out our (TI16750 compatible) uart with 64 byte outgoing fifo
was truncated to 16 byte (bit 5 sets fifo len) when modifying the fcr
reg.
The input code still fills the buffer with 64 bytes if I remember
correctly and thus data is lost.
Our fix was to remove whiping of the fcr content and just add the
TRIGGER_1 which we want for latency.
I can't see why this would not work on less than 2400 always, for all
uarts ...
Otherwise one would have to make sure the filling of the fifo re-checks
the current state of available fifo size (urrk).

The rules used to make 8250_pci "ignore" the PCH uarts are lacking pci subids
entries, preventing it to match and thus is breaking serial port support for
theses systems.

copy_from_read_buf currently copies data to a user buffer and then
checks if the data is single EOF. But it checks it by accessing the
user buffer. First, the buffer may be changed by other threads of the
user program already. Second, it accesses the buffer without any
checks. It might be write-only for example.
Fix this by inspecting contents of the tty (kernel) buffer instead.
Note that "n == 1" is necessary, but not sufficient. But we check
later that there is nothing left by "!tty->read_cnt" condition.
There is still an issue with the current code that EOF being wrapped
to the start of the circular buffer will result in an inappropriate
losing of the EOF character. But this is not intended to be fixed by
this patch.

the current i.MX clock support groups together unrelated clocks
to a single clock which is then used by the driver. This can't
be accomplished with the generic clock framework so we instead
request the individual clocks in the driver. For i.MX there are
generally three different clocks:
ipg: bus clock (needed to access registers)
ahb: dma relevant clock, sometimes referred to as hclk in the datasheet
per: bit clock, pixel clock
This patch changes the driver to request the individual clocks.
Currently all clk_get will get the same clock until the SoCs
are converted to the generic clock framework

When we do this it becomes clear the lock we should be holding is the vc
lock, and in fact many of our other helpers are properly invoked this way.
We don't at this point guarantee not to race the keyboard code but the results
of that appear harmless and that was true before we started as well.
We now have no users of tty_lock in the console driver...

When using Serial Over Lan (SOL) over the virtual serial port in a Intel
management engine (ME) device, on device reset the serial FIFOs need to
be cleared to keep the FIFO indexes in-sync between the host and the
engine.
On a reset the serial device assertes BI, so using that as a cue FIFOs
are cleared. So for this purpose a new handle_break callback has been
added. One other problem is that the serial registers might temporarily
go to 0 on reset of this device. So instead of using the IER register
read, if 0 returned use the ier value in uart_8250_port. This is hidden
under a custom serial_in.

This driver anticipates pch_uart_verify_port() is not called
during installation.
However, actually pch_uart_verify_port() is called during
installation.
As a result, memory access violation occurs like below.
0. initial value: use_dma=0
1. starup()
- dma channel is not allocated because use_dma=0
2. pch_uart_verify_port()
- Set use_dma=1
3. UART processing acts DMA mode because use_dma=1
- memory access violation occurs!
This patch fixes the issue.
Solution:
Whenever pch_uart_verify_port() is called and then
dma channel is not allocated, the channel should be allocated.

The "KT" serial port has another use case for a "received break" quirk,
so before adding another special case to the 8250 core take this
opportunity to push such quirks out of the core and into a uart_port op.
Stephen says:
"If the callback function is to no longer live in 8250.c itself,
arch/arm/mach-tegra/devices.c isn't logically a good place to put it,
and that file will be going away once we get rid of all the board files
and move solely to device tree."
...so since 8250_pci.c houses all the quirks for pci serial devices this
quirk is similarly housed in of_serial.c. Once the open firmware
conversion completes the infrastructure details
(include/linux/of_serial.h, and the export) can all be removed to make
this self contained to of_serial.c.

MVR reg is provided within the uart reg map use the same

Problem Observed:
- interrupt status is set by rising or falling edge on CTS line
- interrupt status is cleared on a .0. to .1. transition of the
interrupt-clear register bit 1.
- interrupt-clear register is reset by hardware once the interrupt
status is .0..
Remark: It seems not possible to read this register back by the
CPU though, but internally this register exists.
- when simultaneous set and reset event on the interrupt status
happens, then the set-event has priority and the status remains
.1.. As a result the interrupt-clear register is not reset to
.0., and no new .0. to .1. transition can be detected on it when
writing a .1. to it.
This implies race condition, the clear must be performed at least
one UARTCLK the riding edge of CTS RIS interrupt.
Fix:
Instead of resetting UART as done in commit
c16d51a32b
"amba pl011: workaround for uart registers lockup" do the
following:
write .0. and then .1. to the interrupt-clear register to make
sure that this transition is detected. According to the datasheet
writing a .0. does not have any effect, but actually it allows to
reset the internal interrupt-clear register.
Take into account:
The .0. needs to last at least for one clk_uart clock period
(~ 38 MHz, 26.08ns)
This way we can do away with the tasklet and keep only a tiny
fix triggered by the variant flag introduced in this patch.

set_get_cmap() ignored the result of {get,put}_user(), causing ioctl(vt,

Another side effect of this: calling the PIO_CMAP ioctl with an invalid

colors set to black).
Leave the default colormap intact and return -EFAULT when
