Not all iscsi drivers support ibft. For drivers like be2iscsi
that do not but are bootable through a vendor firmware specific
format/process this patch moves the sysfs interface from the ibft code
to a lib module. This then allows userspace tools to search for iscsi boot
info in a common place and in a common format.
ibft iscsi boot info is exported in the same place as it was
before: /sys/firmware/ibft.
vendor/fw boot info gets export in /sys/firmware/iscsi_bootX, where X is the
scsi host number of the HBA. Underneath these parent dirs, the
target, ethernet, and initiator dirs are the same as they were before.

For machines with IBFT 1.03 do scan the ACPI table for 'iBFT'
or for 'IBFT'. If the machine is in UEFI mode, only do the ACPI
table scan. For all other machines (pre IBFT 1.03) do
a memory scan if not found in the ACPI tables.

This allows arch code could decide the way to reserve the ibft.
And we should reserve ibft as early as possible, instead of BOOTMEM
stage, in case the table is in RAM range and is not reserved by BIOS
(this will often be the case.)
Move to just after find_smp_config().
Also when CONFIG_NO_BOOTMEM=y, We will not have reserve_bootmem() anymore.

percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being
included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which
in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files
universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies.
percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for
this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those
headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion
needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is
used as the basis of conversion.

The script does the followings.
* Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that
only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used,
gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h.
* When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include
blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms
to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains
core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered -
alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there
doesn't seem to be any matching order.
* If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly
because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out
an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the
file.
The conversion was done in the following steps.
1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly
over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h
and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400
files.
2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion,
some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or
embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added
inclusions to around 150 files.
3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits
from #2 to make sure no file was left behind.
4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed.
e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab
APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually.
5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically
editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h
files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h
inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually
wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each
slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as
necessary.
6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h.
7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures
were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my
distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few
more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things
build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq).
* x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config.
* powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig
* sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig
* ia64 SMP allmodconfig
* s390 SMP allmodconfig
* alpha SMP allmodconfig
* um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig
8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as
a separate patch and serve as bisection point.
Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step
6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch.
If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch
headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of
the specific arch.

Constify struct sysfs_ops.
This is part of the ops structure constification
effort started by Arjan van de Ven et al.
Benefits of this constification:
* prevents modification of data that is shared
(referenced) by many other structure instances
at runtime
* detects/prevents accidental (but not intentional)
modification attempts on archs that enforce
read-only kernel data at runtime
* potentially better optimized code as the compiler
can assume that the const data cannot be changed
* the compiler/linker move const data into .rodata
and therefore exclude them from false sharing

A memmap is a directory in sysfs which includes 3 text files: start, end
and type. For example:
start: 0x100000
end: 0x7e7b1cff
type: System RAM
Interface firmware_map_add was not called explicitly. Remove it and add
function firmware_map_add_hotplug as hotplug interface of memmap.
Each memory entry has a memmap in sysfs, When we hot-add new memory, sysfs
does not export memmap entry for it. We add a call in function add_memory
to function firmware_map_add_hotplug.
Add a new function add_sysfs_fw_map_entry() to create memmap entry, it
will be called when initialize memmap and hot-add memory.

Rather than have the EDD depend on !ia64 (and assuming that only ia64,
x86, x86_64 will be including this Kconfig), have EDD depend on the only
arches which can support this code. This should allow all other arches to
cleanly include the firmware Kconfig.
Also simplify the x86 string used by FIRMWARE_MEMMAP to match EDD.

Unfortunately, one cannot hold on to the struct firmware
that request_firmware_nowait() hands off, which is needed
in some cases. Allow this by requiring the callback to
free it (via release_firmware).
Additionally, give it a gfp_t parameter -- all the current
users call it from a GFP_KERNEL context so the GFP_ATOMIC
isn't necessary. This also marks an API break which is
useful in a sense, although that is obviously not the
primary purpose of this change.

The purpose of dmi->ident is twofold - it may be used by DMI callback
functions when composing log messages; it is also used to determine
end of DMI table in dmi_check_system() and dmi_first_match(). However,
in case when callbacks are not interested in using ident at all it just
wastes memory. Let's make entries with empty first match slot serve as
end-of-table markers instead.

In virtual environments (namely, Xen Dom0) virt <-> phys and
virt <-> isa-bus translations cannot be freely interchanged (and
even outside such environments it is not really correct to do so).
When looking at memory below 1M, the latter translations should
always be used.

Since alloc_bootmem() will never return inaccessible (via virtual
addressing) memory anyway, using the ..._low() variant only makes sense
when the physical address range of the allocated memory must fulfill
further constraints, espacially since on 64-bits (or more generally in all
cases where the pools the two variants allocate from are than the full
available range.
Probably the use in alloc_tce_table() could also be eliminated (based on
code inspection of pci-calgary_64.c), but that seems too risky given I
know nothing about that hardware and have no way to test it.

There are cases where full date information is required instead of
just the year. Add month and day parsing to dmi_get_year() and rename
it to dmi_get_date().
As the original function only required '/' followed by any number of
parseable characters at the end of the string, keep that behavior to
avoid upsetting existing users.
The new function takes dates of format [mm[/dd]]/yy[yy]. Year, month
and date are checked to be in the ranges of [1-9999], [1-12] and
[1-31] respectively and any invalid or out-of-range component is
returned as zero.
The dummy implementation is updated accordingly but the return value
is updated to indicate field not found which is consistent with how
other dummy functions behave.

Year parsing in dmi_get_year() had the following two bugs.
* "00" is treated as invalid instead of 2000 because zero return from
simple_strtoul() is treated as error.
* "0N" where N >= 8 is treated as invalid of 200N because the leading
0 is considered to specify octal.
Fix the above two bugs by using endptr to detect invalid number and
forcing decimal.

It is generally agreed that it would be beneficial for u64 to be an
unsigned long long on all architectures. ia64 (in common with several
other 64-bit architectures) currently uses unsigned long. Migrating
piecemeal is too painful; this giant patch fixes all compilation warnings
and errors that come as a result of switching to use int-ll64.h.
Note that userspace will still see __u64 defined as unsigned long. This
is important as it affects C++ name mangling.

Community reported one SB600 SATA issue(BZ #9412), which led to 64 bit
DMA disablement for all SB600 revisions by driver maintainers with
commits c7a42156d9 and
4cde32fc4b.
But the root cause is ASUS M2A-VM system BIOS bug in old revisions
like 0901, while forcing into 32bit DMA happens to work as workaround.
Now it's time to withdraw 4cde32fc4b
so as to restore the SB600 SATA 64bit DMA capability.
This patch is also adding the workaround for M2A-VM old BIOS revisions,
but users are suggested to upgrade their system BIOS to the latest one
if they meet this issue.

Fix the display of a few fields in the iBFT NIC attribute structure in
sysfs.
Ensure that, if the DHCP IP address and the subnet mask for the interface
is present in the iBFT NIC structure, the corresponding entries are
created in sysfs tree for the device. This would hence create the
additional entries in the tree based on the iBFT table and would not
delete any existing entries.

Some notebooks from HP have the problem that their BIOSes attempt to
spin down hard drives before entering ACPI system states S4 and S5.
This leads to a yo-yo effect during system power-off shutdown and the
last phase of hibernation when the disk is first spun down by the
kernel and then almost immediately turned on and off by the BIOS.
This, in turn, may result in shortening the disk's life times.
To prevent this from happening we can blacklist the affected systems
using DMI information. However, only the on-board controlles should
be blacklisted and their PCI slot numbers can be used for this
purpose. Unfortunately the existing interface for checking DMI
information of the system is not very convenient for this purpose,
because to use it, we would have to define special callback functions
or create a separate struct dmi_system_id table for each blacklisted
system.
To overcome this difficulty introduce a new function
dmi_first_match() returning a pointer to the first entry in an array
of struct dmi_system_id elements that matches the system DMI
information. Then, we can use this pointer to access the entry's
.driver_data field containing the additional information, such as
the PCI slot number, allowing us to do the desired blacklisting.

Impact: Should permit VMware detection on older platforms where the
vendor is changed. Could theoretically cause a regression if some
weird serial number scheme contains the string "VMware" by pure
chance. Seems unlikely, especially with the mixed case.
In some user configured cases, VMware may choose not to put a VMware specific
DMI string, but the product serial key is always there and is VMware specific.
Add a interface to check the serial key, when checking for VMware in the DMI
information.

The iscsi_ibft.c changes are almost certainly a bugfix as the
pointer 'ip' is a u8 *, so they never print the last 8 bytes
of the IPv6 address, and the eight bytes they do print have
a zero byte with them in each 16-bit word.
Other than that, this should cause no difference in functionality.

Tejun's commit 7b595756ec made sysfs
attribute->owner unnecessary. But the field was left in the structure to
ease the merge. It's been over a year since that change and it is now
time to start killing attribute->owner along with its users - one arch at
a time!
This patch is attempt #1 to get rid of attribute->owner only for
CONFIG_X86_64 or CONFIG_X86_32 . We will deal with other arches later on
as and when possible - avr32 will be the next since that is something I
can test. Compile (make allyesconfig / make allmodconfig / custom config)
and boot tested.
akpm: the idea is that we put the declaration of sttribute.owner inside
`#ifndef CONFIG_X86'. But that proved to be too ambitious for now because
new usages kept on turning up in subsystem trees.

It happened to me recently that i added a dmi_check_system() quirk
in a too early codepath, and it was silently ignored because all the
DMI tables and strings were still empty.
As this situation is clearly a programming error / kernel bug,
warn when it happens, instead of silently ignoring quirks.

I got this patch through Red Hat's bugzilla from the bug submitter and
patch creator. I have just fixed it up so it applies without fuzz to
upstream kernels.
Original patch and description from Shyam kumar Iyer:
The issue [ibft module not displaying targets with short names] is because
of an offset calculatation error in the iscsi_ibft.c code. Due to this
error directory structure for the target in /sys/firmware/ibft does not
get created and so the initiator is unable to connect to the target.
Note that this bug surfaced only with an name that had a short section at
the end. eg: "iqn.1984-05.com.dell:dell". It did not surface when the
iqn's had a longer section at the end. eg:
"iqn.2001-04.com.example:storage.disk2.sys1.xyz"
So, the eot_offset was calculated such that an extra 48 bytes i.e. the
size of the ibft_header which has already been accounted was subtracted
twice.
This was not evident with longer iqn names because they would overshoot
the total ibft length more than 48 bytes and thus would escape the bug.

* This patch replaces the dangerous lvalue version of cpumask_of_cpu
with new cpumask_of_cpu_ptr macros. These are patterned after the
node_to_cpumask_ptr macros.
In general terms, if there is a cpumask_of_cpu_map[] then a pointer to
the cpumask_of_cpu_map[cpu] entry is used. The cpumask_of_cpu_map
is provided when there is a large NR_CPUS count, reducing
greatly the amount of code generated and stack space used for
cpumask_of_cpu(). The pointer to the cpumask_t value is needed for
calling set_cpus_allowed_ptr() to reduce the amount of stack space
needed to pass the cpumask_t value.
If there isn't a cpumask_of_cpu_map[], then a temporary variable is
declared and filled in with value from cpumask_of_cpu(cpu) as well as
a pointer variable pointing to this temporary variable. Afterwards,
the pointer is used to reference the cpumask value. The compiler
will optimize out the extra dereference through the pointer as well
as the stack space used for the pointer, resulting in identical code.
A good example of the orthogonal usages is in net/sunrpc/svc.c:

This patch adds /sys/firmware/memmap interface that represents the BIOS
(or Firmware) provided memory map. The tree looks like:

That patch only provides the needed interface:
1. The sysfs interface.
2. The structure and enumeration definition.
3. The function firmware_map_add() and firmware_map_add_early()
that should be called from architecture code (E820/EFI, for
example) to add the contents to the interface.
If the kernel is compiled without CONFIG_FIRMWARE_MEMMAP, the interface does
nothing without cluttering the architecture-specific code with #ifdef's.
The purpose of the new interface is kexec: While /proc/iomem represents
the *used* memory map (e.g. modified via kernel parameters like 'memmap'
and 'mem'), the /sys/firmware/memmap tree represents the unmodified memory
map provided via the firmware. So kexec can:
- use the original memory map for rebooting,
- use the /proc/iomem for setting up the ELF core headers for kdump
case that should only represent the memory of the system.
The patch has been tested on i386 and x86_64.

Add a kernel parameter option to 'edd' to enable/disable BIOS Enhanced Disk
Drive Services. CONFIG_EDD_OFF disables EDD while still compiling EDD into
the kernel. Default behavior can be forced using 'edd=on' or 'edd=off' as
a kernel parameter.

Fixed trivial conflict in include/linux/memory.h due to semaphore header
file change (made irrelevant by the change to mutex).
Add /sysfs/firmware/ibft/[initiator|targetX|ethernetX] directories along with
text properties which export the the iSCSI Boot Firmware Table (iBFT)
structure.
What is iSCSI Boot Firmware Table? It is a mechanism for the iSCSI tools to
extract from the machine NICs the iSCSI connection information so that they
can automagically mount the iSCSI share/target. Currently the iSCSI
information is hard-coded in the initrd. The /sysfs entries are read-only
one-name-and-value fields.

None of these files use any of the functionality promised by
asm/semaphore.h. It's possible that they rely on it dragging in some
unrelated header file, but I can't build all these files, so we'll have
fix any build failures as they come up.

In 2.6.14 a patch was merged which switching the order of the ipmi device
naming from in-order-of-discovery over to reverse-order-of-discovery.
So on systems with multiple BMC interfaces, the ipmi device names are being
created in reverse order relative to how they are discovered on the system
(e.g. on an IBM x3950 multinode server with N nodes, the device name for the
BMC in the first node is /dev/ipmiN-1 and the device name for the BMC in the
last node is /dev/ipmi0, etc.).
The problem is caused by the list handling routines chosen in dmi_scan.c.
Using list_add() causes the multiple ipmi devices to be added to the device
list using a stack-paradigm and so the ipmi driver subsequently pulls them off
during initialization in LIFO order. This patch changes the
dmi_save_ipmi_device() list handling paradigm to a queue, thereby allowing the
ipmi driver to build the ipmi device names in the order in which they are
found on the system.

Adding the same item to a given linked list more than once is guaranteed
to break and corrupt the list. This is however what we do in dmi_scan
since commit 79da472111 ("x86: fix DMI out
of memory problems").
Given that there is absolutely no interest in saving empty OEM strings
anyway, I propose the simple and efficient fix below: we discard the empty
OEM strings altogether.

Now that we gather on-board devices from both DMI types 10 and 41, there is
a possibility that we list the same device twice. In order to not confuse
drivers, and also to save memory, make sure that we do not add duplicate
devices to the dmi_devices list.

From version 2.6 of the SMBIOS standard, type 10 (On Board Devices
Information) becomes obsolete. The reason for this is that no further
fields can be added to this structure without adversely affecting existing
software's ability to properly parse the data.
Therefore type 41 (Onboard Devices Extended Information) was added.

DMI autoload dcdbas on all Dell systems.
This looks for BIOS Vendor or System Vendor == Dell, so this should
work for systems both Dell-branded and those Dell builds but brands
for others. It causes udev to load the dcdbas module at startup,
which is used by tools called by HAL for wireless control and
backlight control, among other uses.
Thanks to Kay Sievers for figuring out how to do this with a single alias.

People with HP Desktops (including me) encounter couple of DMI errors
during boot - dmi_save_oem_strings_devices: out of memory and
dmi_string: out of memory.
On some HP desktops the DMI data include OEM strings (type 11) out of
which only few are meaningful and most other are empty. DMI code
religiously creates copies of these 27 strings (65 bytes each in my
case) and goes OOM in dmi_string().
If DMI_MAX_DATA is bumped up a little then it goes and fails in
dmi_save_oem_strings while allocating dmi_devices of sizeof(struct
dmi_device) corresponding to these strings.
On x86_64 since we cannot use alloc_bootmem this early, the code uses a
static array of 2048 bytes (DMI_MAX_DATA) for allocating the memory DMI
needs. It does not survive the creation of empty strings and devices.
Fix this by detecting and not newly allocating empty strings and instead
using a one statically defined dmi_empty_string.
Also do not create a new struct dmi_device for each empty string - use
one statically define dmi_device with .name=dmi_empty_string and add
that to the dmi_devices list.
On x64 this should stop the OOM with same current size of DMI_MAX_DATA
and on x86 this should save a good amount of (27*65 bytes +
27*sizeof(struct dmi_device) bootmem.
Compile and boot tested on both 32-bit and 64-bit x86.

There is no firmware "subsystem" it's just a directory in /sys that
other portions of the kernel want to hook into. So make it a kobject
not a kset to help alivate anyone who tries to do some odd kset-like
things with this.

We don't need a "default" ktype for a kset. We should set this
explicitly every time for each kset. This change is needed so that we
can make ksets dynamic, and cleans up one of the odd, undocumented
assumption that the kset/kobject/ktype model has.

get rid of input BIT* duplicate defines
use newly global defined macros for input layer. Also remove includes of
input.h from non-input sources only for BIT macro definiton. Define the
macro temporarily in local manner, all those local definitons will be
removed further in this patchset (to not break bisecting).

We can use sysfs attributes with an extra parameter for dmi id
attributes. This makes it possible to use the same callback function
for all attributes, reducing the binary size significantly (-18% on
x86_64.)

This changes the uevent buffer functions to use a struct instead of a
long list of parameters. It does no longer require the caller to do the
proper buffer termination and size accounting, which is currently wrong
in some places. It fixes a known bug where parts of the uevent
environment are overwritten because of wrong index calculations.

Three main sets of changes:
1) dmi_get_system_info() return value should have been marked const,
since callers should not be changing that data.
2) const-ify DMI internals, since DMI firmware tables should,
whenever possible, be marked const to ensure we never ever write to
that data area.
3) const-ify DMI API, to enable marking tables const where possible
in low-level drivers.
And if we're really lucky, this might enable some additional
optimizations on the part of the compiler.
The bulk of the changes are #2 and #3, which are interrelated. #1 could
have been a separate patch, but it was so small compared to the others,
it was easier to roll it into this changeset.

Beacuse SERIAL_PORT_DFNS is removed from include/asm-i386/serial.h and
include/asm-x86_64/serial.h. the serial8250_ports need to be probed late in
serial initializing stage. the console_init=>serial8250_console_init=>
register_console=>serial8250_console_setup will return -ENDEV, and console
ttyS0 can not be enabled at that time. need to wait till uart_add_one_port in
drivers/serial/serial_core.c to call register_console to get console ttyS0.
that is too late.
Make early_uart to use early_param, so uart console can be used earlier. Make
it to be bootconsole with CON_BOOT flag, so can use console handover feature.
and it will switch to corresponding normal serial console automatically.
new command line will be:
console=uart8250,io,0x3f8,9600n8
console=uart8250,mmio,0xff5e0000,115200n8
or
earlycon=uart8250,io,0x3f8,9600n8

Well, first of all, I don't want to change so many files either.
What I do:
Adding a new parameter "struct bin_attribute *" in the
.read/.write methods for the sysfs binary attributes.
In fact, only the four lines change in fs/sysfs/bin.c and
include/linux/sysfs.h do the real work.
But I have to update all the files that use binary attributes
to make them compatible with the new .read and .write methods.
I'm not sure if I missed any. :(
Why I do this:
For a sysfs attribute, we can get a pointer pointing to the
struct attribute in the .show/.store method,
while we can't do this for the binary attributes.
I don't know why this is different, but this does make it not
so handy to use the binary attributes as the regular ones.
So I think this patch is reasonable. :)
Who benefits from it:
The patch that exposes ACPI tables in sysfs
requires such an improvement.
All the table binary attributes share the same .read method.
Parameter "struct bin_attribute *" is used to get
the table signature and instance number which are used to
distinguish different ACPI table binary attributes.
Without this parameter, we need to offer different .read methods
for different ACPI table binary attributes.
This is impossible as there are various ACPI tables on different
platforms, and we don't know what they are until they are loaded.

sysfs is now completely out of driver/module lifetime game. After
deletion, a sysfs node doesn't access anything outside sysfs proper,
so there's no reason to hold onto the attribute owners. Note that
often the wrong modules were accounted for as owners leading to
accessing removed modules.
This patch kills now unnecessary attribute->owner. Note that with
this change, userland holding a sysfs node does not prevent the
backing module from being unloaded.

The patch below adds DMI/SMBIOS based module autoloading to the Linux
kernel. The idea is to load laptop drivers automatically (and other
drivers which cannot be autoloaded otherwise), based on the DMI system
identification information of the BIOS.
Right now most distros manually try to load all available laptop
drivers on bootup in the hope that at least one of them loads
successfully. This patch does away with all that, and uses udev to
automatically load matching drivers on the right machines.
Basically the patch just exports the DMI information that has been
parsed by the kernel anyway to userspace via a sysfs device
/sys/class/dmi/id and makes sure that proper modalias attributes are
available. Besides adding the "modalias" attribute it also adds
attributes for a few other DMI fields which might be useful for
writing udev rules.
This patch is not an attempt to export the entire DMI/SMBIOS data to
userspace. We already have "dmidecode" which parses the complete DMI
info from userspace. The purpose of this patch is machine model
identification and good udev integration.
To take advantage of DMI based module autoloading, a driver should
export one or more MODULE_ALIAS fields similar to these:

These lines are specific to my msi-laptop.c driver. They are basically
just a concatenation of a few carefully selected DMI fields with all
potentially bad characters stripped.
Besides laptop drivers, modules like "hdaps", the i2c modules
and the hwmon modules are good candidates for "dmi:" MODULE_ALIAS
lines.
Besides merely exporting the DMI data via sysfs the patch adds
support for a few more DMI fields. Especially the CHASSIS fields are
very useful to identify different laptop modules. The patch also adds
working MODULE_ALIAS lines to my msi-laptop.c driver.
I'd like to thank Kay Sievers for helping me to clean up this patch
for posting it on lkml.
Patch is against Linus' current GIT HEAD. Should probably apply to
older kernels as well without modification.

especially as it is not really needed at all.

Fix race when deleting an EFI variable and issuing another EFI command on
the same variable. The removal of the variable from the efivars_list
should be done in efivar_delete and not delayed until the kobject release.
Furthermore, remove the item from the list at module unload time, and use
list_for_each_entry_safe() rather than list_for_each_safe() for
readability.
Tested on ia64.

This teaches dmi_decode() how to decode and save OEM Strings (type 11) DMI
information, which is currently discarded silently. Existing code using
DMI is not affected. Follows the "System Management BIOS (SMBIOS)
Specification" (http://www.dmtf.org/standards/smbios), and also the
userspace dmidecode.c code.
OEM Strings are the only safe way to identify some hardware, e.g., the
ThinkPad embedded controller used by the soon-to-be-submitted tp_smapi
driver. This will also let us eliminate the long whitelist in the mainline
hdaps driver (in a future patch).

dmi_scan.c is arch-independent and is used by i386, x86_64, and ia64.
Currently all three arches compile it from arch/i386, which means that ia64
and x86_64 depend on things in arch/i386 that they wouldn't otherwise care
about.
This is simply "mv arch/i386/kernel/dmi_scan.c drivers/firmware/" (removing
trailing whitespace) and the associated Makefile changes. All three
architectures already set CONFIG_DMI in their top-level Kconfig files.

The kernel's implementation of notifier chains is unsafe. There is no
protection against entries being added to or removed from a chain while the
chain is in use. The issues were discussed in this thread:

We noticed that notifier chains in the kernel fall into two basic usage
classes:
"Blocking" chains are always called from a process context
and the callout routines are allowed to sleep;
"Atomic" chains can be called from an atomic context and
the callout routines are not allowed to sleep.
We decided to codify this distinction and make it part of the API. Therefore
this set of patches introduces three new, parallel APIs: one for blocking
notifiers, one for atomic notifiers, and one for "raw" notifiers (which is
really just the old API under a new name). New kinds of data structures are
used for the heads of the chains, and new routines are defined for
registration, unregistration, and calling a chain. The three APIs are
explained in include/linux/notifier.h and their implementation is in
kernel/sys.c.
With atomic and blocking chains, the implementation guarantees that the chain
links will not be corrupted and that chain callers will not get messed up by
entries being added or removed. For raw chains the implementation provides no
guarantees at all; users of this API must provide their own protections. (The
idea was that situations may come up where the assumptions of the atomic and
blocking APIs are not appropriate, so it should be possible for users to
handle these things in their own way.)
There are some limitations, which should not be too hard to live with. For
atomic/blocking chains, registration and unregistration must always be done in
a process context since the chain is protected by a mutex/rwsem. Also, a
callout routine for a non-raw chain must not try to register or unregister
entries on its own chain. (This did happen in a couple of places and the code
had to be changed to avoid it.)
Since atomic chains may be called from within an NMI handler, they cannot use
spinlocks for synchronization. Instead we use RCU. The overhead falls almost
entirely in the unregister routine, which is okay since unregistration is much
less frequent that calling a chain.

of them use the raw API, so for the moment it is only a placeholder.

please let us know or submit a patch to fix them. Note that any chain that
gets called very frequently should be atomic, because the rwsem read-locking
used for blocking chains is very likely to incur cache misses on SMP systems.
(However, if the chain's callout routines may sleep then the chain cannot be
atomic.)

Almost all users of the table addresses from the EFI system table want
physical addresses. So rather than doing the pa->va->pa conversion, just keep
physical addresses in struct efi.
This fixes a DMI bug: the efi structure contained the physical SMBIOS address
on x86 but the virtual address on ia64, so dmi_scan_machine() used ioremap()
on a virtual address on ia64.
This is essentially the same as an earlier patch by Matt Tolentino:

except that this changes all table addresses, not just ACPI addresses.
Matt's original patch was backed out because it caused MCAs on HP sx1000
systems. That problem is resolved by the ioremap() attribute checking added

Do not use platform_device_register_simple() as it is going away, define
dcdbas_driver and implement ->probe() and ->remove() functions so manual
binding and unbinding will work with this driver.
Also switch to using attribute_group when creating sysfs attributes and
make sure to check and handle errors; explicitely remove attributes when
detaching driver.

smi_data_buf_free() references dcdbas_pdev when calling
dma_free_coherent(). In dcdbas_exit(), smi_data_buf_free() is called after
platform_device_unregister(dcdbas_pdev).
This patch moves platform_device_unregister(dcdbas_pdev) after
smi_data_buf_free() in dcdbas_exit().

Root cause:
The dell_rbu driver creates entries in /sys/class/firmware/dell_rbu/ by
calling request_firmware_nowait (without hotplug ) this function inturn
starts a kernel thread which creates the entries in
/sys/class/firmware/dell_rbu/loading , data and the thread waits on the
user action to return control back to the callback fucntion of dell_rbu.
The thread calls wait_on_completion which puts it in a D state until the
user action happens. If there is no user action happening the load average
goes up as the thread D state is taken in to account. Also after
downloading the BIOS image the enrties go away momentarily but they are
recreated from the callback function in dell_rbu. This causes the thread
to get recreated causing the load average to permenently stay around 1.
Fix:
The dell_rbu also creates the entry
/sys/devices/platform/dell_rbu/image_type at driver load time. The image
type by default is mono if required the user can echo packet to image_type
to make the BIOS update mechanism using packets. Also by echoing init in
to image_type the /sys/class/firmware/dell_rbu entries can be created.
The driver code was changed to not create /sys/class/firmware/dell_rbu
entries during load time, and also to not create the above entries from the
callback function. The entries are only created by echoing init to
/sys/devices/platform/dell_rbu/image_type The user now needs to create the
entries to download the image monolithic or packet. This fixes the issue
since the kernel thread only is created when ever the user is ready to
download the BIOS image; this minimizes the life span of the kernel thread
and the load average goes back to normal.

This patch removes almost all inclusions of linux/version.h. The 3
#defines are unused in most of the touched files.
A few drivers use the simple KERNEL_VERSION(a,b,c) macro, which is
unfortunatly in linux/version.h.
There are also lots of #ifdef for long obsolete kernels, this was not
touched. In a few places, the linux/version.h include was move to where
the LINUX_VERSION_CODE was used.

This patch has the changes to support the memory floor fix done in Dell
BIOS. The BIOS incase of packet update mechanism would not accept packet
placed in memory below a cretain address. This address is by default 128K
but can change. The driver now can accept the memory floor if the user
chooses to make it will try to allocate contiguous physical memory above
the memory floor by allocating a set of packets till a valid memory
allocation is made. All the allocates then are freed. This repeats for
everty packet.
This patch was created by Michael E Brown and has been tested on 2.6.14-rc5

In the current dell_rbu code ver 2.0 the packet update mechanism makes the
user app dump every individual packet in to the driver.
This adds in efficiency as every packet update makes the
/sys/class/firmware/dell_rbu/loading and data files to disappear and reappear
again. Thus the user app needs to wait for the files to reappear to dump
another packet. This slows down the packet update tremendously in case of
large number of packets. I am submitting a new patch for dell_rbu which will
change the way we do packet updates;
In the new method the user app will create a new single file which has already
packetized the rbu image and all the packets are now staged in this file.
This driver also creates a new entry in
/sys/devices/platform/dell_rbu/packet_size ; the user needs to echo the packet
size here before downloading the packet file.
The user should do the following:
create one single file which has all the packets stacked together.
echo the packet size in to /sys/devices/platform/dell_rbu/packet_size.
echo 1 > /sys/class/firmware/dell_rbu/loading
cat the packetfile > /sys/class/firmware/dell_rbu/data
echo 0 > /sys/class/firmware/dell_rbu/loading
The driver takes the file which came through /sys/class/firmware/dell_rbu/data
and takes chunks of paket_size data from it and place in contiguous memory.
This makes packet update process very efficient and fast. As all the packet
update happens in one single operation. The user can still read back the
downloaded file from /sys/devices/platform/dell_rbu/data.

BUG fixes:
The driver used to allocate memory with spinlock held which has been
fixed in this patch.
The driver was printing the entire buffer when it received a invalid
entry in image_type. The fix is to only print a warning message and not
the buffer.
Usability enhancements:
It is possible that due to user error the /sys/class/firmware/dell_rbu
entries might be missing, this can happen if the user does the following
echo 1 > /sys/class/firmware/dell_rbu/loading
echo 0 > /sys/class/firmware/dell_rbu/loading
This will make the entries in /sys/class/firmware/ to disappear and the
only way get them back was bby unloading and loading the driver.
This patch makes the user recreate these entries by echoing init in to
image_type.
This patch has been tested with Libsmbios and Dell OpenManage.

The HCDP specs (i.e., PCDP revision < 3) allow zero as a default value for
baud rate and data bits. So if firmware doesn't supply them, let
early_serial_console_init() probe for them rather than telling it the baud
rate is zero.
Also, update the URL for the PCDP spec.

Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history,
even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git
archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about
3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early
git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good
infrastructure for it.
