The core framework has a handful of patches this time around, mostly due
to the clk rate protection support added by Jerome Brunet. This feature will allow consumers to lock in a certain rate on the output of a clk so that things like audio playback don't hear pops when the clk frequency changes due to shared parent clks changing rates. Currently the clk API doesn't guarantee the rate of a clk stays at the rate you request after clk_set_rate() is called, so this new API will allow drivers to express that requirement. Beyond this, the core got some debugfs pretty printing patches and a couple minor non-critical fixes. Looking outside of the core framework diff we have some new driver additions and the removal of a legacy TI clk driver. Both of these hit high in the dirstat. Also, the removal of the asm-generic/clkdev.h file causes small one-liners in all the architecture Kbuild files. Overall, the driver diff seems to be the normal stuff that comes all the time to fix little problems here and there and to support new hardware. Merge branch 'siginfo-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace
Pull siginfo cleanups from Eric Biederman: "Long ago when 2.4 was just a testing release copy_siginfo_to_user was made to copy individual fields to userspace, possibly for efficiency and to ensure initialized values were not copied to userspace. Unfortunately the design was complex, it's assumptions unstated, and humans are fallible and so while it worked much of the time that design failed to ensure unitialized memory is not copied to userspace. This set of changes is part of a new design to clean up siginfo and simplify things, and hopefully make the siginfo handling robust enough that a simple inspection of the code can be made to ensure we don't copy any unitializied fields to userspace. The design is to unify struct siginfo and struct compat_siginfo into a single definition that is shared between all architectures so that anyone adding to the set of information shared with struct siginfo can see the whole picture. Hopefully ensuring all future si_code assignments are arch independent. The design is to unify copy_siginfo_to_user32 and copy_siginfo_from_user32 so that those function are complete and cope with all of the different cases documented in signinfo_layout. I don't think there was a single implementation of either of those functions that was complete and correct before my changes unified them. The design is to introduce a series of helpers including force_siginfo_fault that take the values that are needed in struct siginfo and build the siginfo structure for their callers. Ensuring struct siginfo is built correctly. The remaining work for 4.17 (unless someone thinks it is post -rc1 material) is to push usage of those helpers down into the architectures so that architecture specific code will not need to deal with the fiddly work of intializing struct siginfo, and then when struct siginfo is guaranteed to be fully initialized change copy siginfo_to_user into a simple wrapper around copy_to_user. Further there is work in progress on the issues that have been documented requires arch specific knowledge to sort out. The changes below fix or at least document all of the issues that have been found with siginfo generation. Then proceed to unify struct siginfo the 32 bit helpers that copy siginfo to and from userspace, and generally clean up anything that is not arch specific with regards to siginfo generation. It is a lot but with the unification you can of siginfo you can already see the code reduction in the kernel" * 'siginfo-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace: (45 commits) signal/memory-failure: Use force_sig_mceerr and send_sig_mceerr mm/memory_failure: Remove unused trapno from memory_failure signal/ptrace: Add force_sig_ptrace_errno_trap and use it where needed signal/powerpc: Remove unnecessary signal_code parameter of do_send_trap signal: Helpers for faults with specialized siginfo layouts signal: Add send_sig_fault and force_sig_fault signal: Replace memset(info,...) with clear_siginfo for clarity signal: Don't use structure initializers for struct siginfo signal/arm64: Better isolate the COMPAT_TASK portion of ptrace_hbptriggered ptrace: Use copy_siginfo in setsiginfo and getsiginfo signal: Unify and correct copy_siginfo_to_user32 signal: Remove the code to clear siginfo before calling copy_siginfo_from_user32 signal: Unify and correct copy_siginfo_from_user32 signal/blackfin: Remove pointless UID16_SIGINFO_COMPAT_NEEDED signal/blackfin: Move the blackfin specific si_codes to asm-generic/siginfo.h signal/tile: Move the tile specific si_codes to asm-generic/siginfo.h signal/frv: Move the frv specific si_codes to asm-generic/siginfo.h signal/ia64: Move the ia64 specific si_codes to asm-generic/siginfo.h signal/powerpc: Remove redefinition of NSIGTRAP on powerpc signal: Move addr_lsb into the _sigfault union for clarity ... |

metag: remove arch specific early DT functions
Now that the DT core code handles bootmem arches, we can remove the metag specific early_init_dt_alloc_memory_arch function. As the default early_init_dt_add_memory_arch just does a WARN, we can remove it too. Cc: James Hogan <jhogan@kernel.org> Cc: linux-metag@vger.kernel.org Signed-off-by: Rob Herring <robh@kernel.org> |

signal/metag: Document a conflict with SI_USER with SIGFPE
Setting si_code to 0 results in a userspace seeing an si_code of 0.
This is the same si_code as SI_USER. Posix and common sense requires
that SI_USER not be a signal specific si_code. As such this use of 0
for the si_code is a pretty horribly broken ABI.
Further use of si_code == 0 guaranteed that copy_siginfo_to_user saw a
value of __SI_KILL and now sees a value of SIL_KILL with the result
hat uid and pid fields are copied and which might copying the si_addr
field by accident but certainly not by design. Making this a very
flakey implementation.
Utilizing FPE_FIXME siginfo_layout will now return SIL_FAULT and the
appropriate fields will reliably be copied.
Possible ABI fixes includee:
- Send the signal without siginfo
- Don't generate a signal
- Possibly assign and use an appropriate si_code
- Don't handle cases which can't happen

Construct init thread stack in the linker script rather than by union
Construct the init thread stack in the linker script rather than doing it by means of a union so that ia64's init_task.c can be got rid of. The following symbols are then made available from INIT_TASK_DATA() linker script macro: init_thread_union init_stack INIT_TASK_DATA() also expands the region to THREAD_SIZE to accommodate the size of the init stack. init_thread_union is given its own section so that it can be placed into the stack space in the right order. I'm assuming that the ia64 ordering is correct and that the task_struct is first and the thread_info second. kbuild: handle dtb-y and CONFIG_OF_ALL_DTBS natively in Makefile.lib
If CONFIG_OF_ALL_DTBS is enabled, "make ARCH=arm64 dtbs" compiles each DTB twice; one from arch/arm64/boot/dts/*/Makefile and the other from the dtb-$(CONFIG_OF_ALL_DTBS) line in arch/arm64/boot/dts/Makefile. It could be a race problem when building DTBS in parallel. Another minor issue is CONFIG_OF_ALL_DTBS covers only *.dts in vendor sub-directories, so this broke when Broadcom added one more hierarchy in arch/arm64/boot/dts/broadcom/<soc>/. One idea to fix the issues in a clean way is to move DTB handling to Kbuild core scripts. Makefile.dtbinst already recognizes dtb-y natively, so it should not hurt to do so. Add $(dtb-y) to extra-y, and $(dtb-) as well if CONFIG_OF_ALL_DTBS is enabled. All clutter things in Makefiles go away. As a bonus clean-up, I also removed dts-dirs. Just use subdir-y directly to traverse sub-directories. License cleanup: add SPDX license identifier to uapi header files with a license
Many user space API headers have licensing information, which is either incomplete, badly formatted or just a shorthand for referring to the license under which the file is supposed to be. This makes it hard for compliance tools to determine the correct license. Update these files with an SPDX license identifier. The identifier was chosen based on the license information in the file. GPL/LGPL licensed headers get the matching GPL/LGPL SPDX license identifier with the added 'WITH Linux-syscall-note' exception, which is the officially assigned exception identifier for the kernel syscall exception: NOTE! This copyright does *not* cover user programs that use kernel services by normal system calls - this is merely considered normal use of the kernel, and does *not* fall under the heading of "derived work". This exception makes it possible to include GPL headers into non GPL code, without confusing license compliance tools. Headers which have either explicit dual licensing or are just licensed under a non GPL license are updated with the corresponding SPDX identifier and the GPLv2 with syscall exception identifier. The format is: ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR SPDX-ID-OF-OTHER-LICENSE) SPDX license identifiers are a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. The update does not remove existing license information as this has to be done on a case by case basis and the copyright holders might have to be consulted. This will happen in a separate step. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. See the previous patch in this series for the methodology of how this patch was researched. Many user space API headers are missing licensing information, which makes it hard for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default are files without license information under the default license of the kernel, which is GPLV2. License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no license
Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930 and resulted in the second patch in this series. - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in it (per prior point). Results summary: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------ GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270 GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17 LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15 GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14 ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5 LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4 LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1 and that resulted in the third patch in this series. - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became the concluded license(s). - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a license but the other didn't, or they both detected different licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred. - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics). - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier, the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later in time. In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. dma-mapping: turn dma_cache_sync into a dma_map_ops method
After we removed all the dead wood it turns out only two architectures actually implement dma_cache_sync as a real op: mips and parisc. Add a cache_sync method to struct dma_map_ops and implement it for the mips defualt DMA ops, and the parisc pa11 ops. Note that arm, arc and openrisc support DMA_ATTR_NON_CONSISTENT, but never provided a functional dma_cache_sync implementations, which seems somewhat odd. Outside of the locking code itself, {read,spin,write}_can_lock() have no users in tree. Apparmor (the last remaining user of write_can_lock()) got moved over to lockdep by the previous patch. This patch removes the use of {read,spin,write}_can_lock() from the BUILD_LOCK_OPS macro, deferring to the trylock operation for testing the lock status, and subsequently removes the unused macros altogether. locking/atomic: Fix atomic_set_release() for 'funny' architectures
Those architectures that have a special atomic_set implementation also need a special atomic_set_release(), because for the very same reason WRITE_ONCE() is broken for them, smp_store_release() is too. The vast majority is architectures that have spinlock hash based atomic implementation except hexagon which seems to have a hardware 'feature'. The spinlock based atomics should be SC, that is, none of them appear to place extra barriers in atomic_cmpxchg() or any of the other SC atomic primitives and therefore seem to rely on their spinlock implementation being SC (I did not fully validate all that). Therefore, the normal atomic_set() is SC and can be used at atomic_set_release(). mm/hugetlb: add size parameter to huge_pte_offset()
A poisoned or migrated hugepage is stored as a swap entry in the page tables. On architectures that support hugepages consisting of contiguous page table entries (such as on arm64) this leads to ambiguity in determining the page table entry to return in huge_pte_offset() when a poisoned entry is encountered. devicetree: Move include prefixes from arch to separate directory
We use a directory under arch/$ARCH/boot/dts as an include path
that has links outside of the subtree to find dt-bindings from under
include/dt-bindings. That's been working well, but new DT architectures
haven't been adding them by default.
Recently there's been a desire to share some of the DT material between
arm and arm64, which originally caused developers to create symlinks or
relative includes between the subtrees. This isn't ideal -- it breaks
if the DT files aren't stored in the exact same hierarchy as the kernel
tree, and generally it's just icky.
As a somewhat cleaner solution we decided to add a $ARCH/ prefix link
once, and allow DTS files to reference dtsi (and dts) files in other
architectures that way.
Original approach was to create these links under each architecture,
but it lead to the problem of recursive symlinks.
As a remedy, move the include link directories out of the architecture
trees into a common location. At the same time, they can now share one
directory and one dt-bindings/ link as well.

Kbuild UAPI header export updates for v4.12
Improvement of headers_install by Nicolas Dichtel. It has been long since the introduction of uapi directories, but the de-coupling of exported headers has not been completed. uapi: export all headers under uapi directories
Regularly, when a new header is created in include/uapi/, the developer forgets to add it in the corresponding Kbuild file. This error is usually detected after the release is out. metag/uaccess: Check access_ok in strncpy_from_user
The metag implementation of strncpy_from_user() doesn't validate the src pointer, which could allow reading of arbitrary kernel memory. Add a short access_ok() check to prevent that. Its still possible for it to read across the user/kernel boundary, but it will invariably reach a NUL character after only 9 bytes, leaking only a static kernel address being loaded into D0Re0 at the beginning of __start, which is acceptable for the immediate fix. metag/uaccess: Fix access_ok()
The __user_bad() macro used by access_ok() has a few corner cases
noticed by Al Viro where it doesn't behave correctly:
- The kernel range check has off by 1 errors which permit access to the
first and last byte of the kernel mapped range.
- The kernel range check ends at LINCORE_BASE rather than
META_MEMORY_LIMIT, which is ineffective when the kernel is in global
space (an extremely uncommon configuration).
There are a couple of other shortcomings here too:
- Access to the whole of the other address space is permitted (i.e. the
global half of the address space when the kernel is in local space).
This isn't ideal as it could theoretically still contain privileged
mappings set up by the bootloader.
- The size argument is unused, permitting user copies which start on
valid pages at the end of the user address range and cross the
boundary into the kernel address space (e.g. addr = 0x3ffffff0, size
> 0x10).
It isn't very convenient to add size checks when disallowing certain
regions, and it seems far safer to be sure and explicit about what
userland is able to access, so invert the logic to allow certain regions
instead, and fix the off by 1 errors and missing size checks. This also
allows the get_fs() == KERNEL_DS check to be more easily optimised into
the user address range case.
We now have 3 such allowed regions:
- The user address range (incorporating the get_fs() == KERNEL_DS
check).
- NULL (some kernel code expects this to work, and we'll always catch
the fault anyway).
- The core code memory region.
