kernel/cpu: Allow non-zero CPU to be primary for suspend / kexec freeze
This patch provides an arch option, ARCH_SUSPEND_NONZERO_CPU, to opt-in to allowing suspend to occur on one of the housekeeping CPUs rather than hardcoded CPU0. This will allow CPU0 to be a nohz_full CPU with a later change. It may be possible for platforms with hardware/firmware restrictions on suspend/wake effectively support this by handing off the final stage to CPU0 when kernel housekeeping is no longer required. Another option is to make housekeeping / nohz_full mask dynamic at runtime, but the complexity could not be justified at this time. mm/hibernation: Make hibernation handle unmapped pages
Make hibernate handle unmapped pages on the direct map when CONFIG_ARCH_HAS_SET_ALIAS=y is set. These functions allow for setting pages to invalid configurations, so now hibernate should check if the pages have valid mappings and handle if they are unmapped when doing a hibernate save operation. Previously this checking was already done when CONFIG_DEBUG_PAGEALLOC=y was configured. It does not appear to have a big hibernating performance impact. The speed of the saving operation before this change was measured as 819.02 MB/s, and after was measured at 813.32 MB/s. treewide: add checks for the return value of memblock_alloc*()
Add check for the return value of memblock_alloc*() functions and call panic() in case of error. The panic message repeats the one used by panicing memblock allocators with adjustment of parameters to include only relevant ones. PM / EM: Expose the Energy Model in debugfs
The recently introduced Energy Model (EM) framework manages power cost tables of CPUs. These tables are currently only visible from kernel space. However, in order to debug the behaviour of subsystems that use the EM (EAS for example), it is often required to know what the power costs are from userspace. For this reason, introduce under /sys/kernel/debug/energy_model a set of directories representing the performance domains of the system. Each performance domain contains a set of sub-directories representing the different capacity states (cs) and their attributes, as well as a file exposing the related CPUs. The resulting hierarchy is as follows on Arm juno r0 for example: /sys/kernel/debug/energy_model ├── pd0 │ ├── cpus │ ├── cs:450000 │ │ ├── cost │ │ ├── frequency │ │ └── power │ ├── cs:575000 │ │ ├── cost │ │ ├── frequency │ │ └── power │ ├── cs:700000 │ │ ├── cost │ │ ├── frequency │ │ └── power │ ├── cs:775000 │ │ ├── cost │ │ ├── frequency │ │ └── power │ └── cs:850000 │ ├── cost │ ├── frequency │ └── power └── pd1 ├── cpus ├── cs:1100000 │ ├── cost │ ├── frequency │ └── power ├── cs:450000 │ ├── cost │ ├── frequency │ └── power ├── cs:625000 │ ├── cost │ ├── frequency │ └── power ├── cs:800000 │ ├── cost │ ├── frequency │ └── power └── cs:950000 ├── cost ├── frequency └── power Signed-off-by: Quentin Perret <quentin.perret@arm.com> Reviewed-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@linuxfoundation.org> Signed-off-by: Rafael J. totalram_pages and totalhigh_pages are made static inline function. Main motivation was that managed_page_count_lock handling was complicating things. It was discussed in length here, https://lore.kernel.org/patchwork/patch/995739/#1181785 So it seemes better to remove the lock and convert variables to atomic, with preventing poteintial store-to-read tearing as a bonus. PM: Introduce an Energy Model management framework
Several subsystems in the kernel (task scheduler and/or thermal at the time of writing) can benefit from knowing about the energy consumed by CPUs. Yet, this information can come from different sources (DT or firmware for example), in different formats, hence making it hard to exploit without a standard API. As an attempt to address this, introduce a centralized Energy Model (EM) management framework which aggregates the power values provided by drivers into a table for each performance domain in the system. The power cost tables are made available to interested clients (e.g. task scheduler or thermal) via platform-agnostic APIs. The overall design is represented by the diagram below (focused on Arm-related drivers as an example, but applicable to any architecture): +---------------+ +-----------------+ +-------------+ | Thermal (IPA) | | Scheduler (EAS) | | Other | +---------------+ +-----------------+ +-------------+ | | em_pd_energy() | | | em_cpu_get() | +-----------+ | +--------+ | | | v v v +---------------------+ | | | Energy Model | | | | Framework | | | +---------------------+ ^ ^ ^ | | | em_register_perf_domain() +----------+ | +---------+ | | | +---------------+ +---------------+ +--------------+ | cpufreq-dt | | arm_scmi | | Other | +---------------+ +---------------+ +--------------+ ^ ^ ^ | | | +--------------+ +---------------+ +--------------+ | Device Tree | | Firmware | | ? | +--------------+ +---------------+ +--------------+ Drivers (typically, but not limited to, CPUFreq drivers) can register data in the EM framework using the em_register_perf_domain() API. The calling driver must provide a callback function with a standardized signature that will be used by the EM framework to build the power cost tables of the performance domain. This design should offer a lot of flexibility to calling drivers which are free of reading information from any location and to use any technique to compute power costs. Moreover, the capacity states registered by drivers in the EM framework are not required to match real performance states of the target. This is particularly important on targets where the performance states are not known by the OS. The power cost coefficients managed by the EM framework are specified in milli-watts. Although the two potential users of those coefficients (IPA and EAS) only need relative correctness, IPA specifically needs to compare the power of CPUs with the power of other components (GPUs, for example), which are still expressed in absolute terms in their respective subsystems. Hence, specifying the power of CPUs in milli-watts should help transitioning IPA to using the EM framework without introducing new problems by keeping units comparable across sub-systems. On the longer term, the EM of other devices than CPUs could also be managed by the EM framework, which would enable to remove the absolute unit. However, this is not absolutely required as a first step, so this extension of the EM framework is left for later. On the client side, the EM framework offers APIs to access the power cost tables of a CPU (em_cpu_get()), and to estimate the energy consumed by the CPUs of a performance domain (em_pd_energy()). Clients such as the task scheduler can then use these APIs to access the shared data structures holding the Energy Model of CPUs. memblock: stop using implicit alignment to SMP_CACHE_BYTES
When a memblock allocation APIs are called with align = 0, the alignment is implicitly set to SMP_CACHE_BYTES. Implicit alignment is done deep in the memblock allocator and it can come as a surprise. Not that such an alignment would be wrong even when used incorrectly but it is better to be explicit for the sake of clarity and the prinicple of the least surprise. Replace all such uses of memblock APIs with the 'align' parameter explicitly set to SMP_CACHE_BYTES and stop implicit alignment assignment in the memblock internal allocation functions. For the case when memblock APIs are used via helper functions, e.g. like iommu_arena_new_node() in Alpha, the helper functions were detected with Coccinelle's help and then manually examined and updated where appropriate. The direct memblock APIs users were updated using the semantic patch below: @@ expression size, min_addr, max_addr, nid; @@ ( | - memblock_alloc_try_nid_raw(size, 0, min_addr, max_addr, nid) + memblock_alloc_try_nid_raw(size, SMP_CACHE_BYTES, min_addr, max_addr, nid) | - memblock_alloc_try_nid_nopanic(size, 0, min_addr, max_addr, nid) + memblock_alloc_try_nid_nopanic(size, SMP_CACHE_BYTES, min_addr, max_addr, nid) | - memblock_alloc_try_nid(size, 0, min_addr, max_addr, nid) + memblock_alloc_try_nid(size, SMP_CACHE_BYTES, min_addr, max_addr, nid) | - memblock_alloc(size, 0) + memblock_alloc(size, SMP_CACHE_BYTES) | - memblock_alloc_raw(size, 0) + memblock_alloc_raw(size, SMP_CACHE_BYTES) | - memblock_alloc_from(size, 0, min_addr) + memblock_alloc_from(size, SMP_CACHE_BYTES, min_addr) | - memblock_alloc_nopanic(size, 0) + memblock_alloc_nopanic(size, SMP_CACHE_BYTES) | - memblock_alloc_low(size, 0) + memblock_alloc_low(size, SMP_CACHE_BYTES) | - memblock_alloc_low_nopanic(size, 0) + memblock_alloc_low_nopanic(size, SMP_CACHE_BYTES) | - memblock_alloc_from_nopanic(size, 0, min_addr) + memblock_alloc_from_nopanic(size, SMP_CACHE_BYTES, min_addr) | - memblock_alloc_node(size, 0, nid) + memblock_alloc_node(size, SMP_CACHE_BYTES, nid) ) [mhocko@suse.com: changelog update] [akpm@linux-foundation.org: coding-style fixes] [rppt@linux.ibm.com: fix missed uses of implicit alignment] Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/r/20181016133656.GA10925@rapoport-lnx Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/r/1538687224-17535-1-git-send-email-rppt@linux.vnet.ibm.com Signed-off-by: Mike Rapoport <rppt@linux.vnet.ibm.com> Suggested-by: Michal Hocko <mhocko@suse.com> Acked-by: Paul Burton <paul.burton@mips.com> [MIPS] Acked-by: Michael Ellerman <mpe@ellerman.id.au> [powerpc] Acked-by: Michal Hocko <mhocko@suse.com> Cc: Catalin Marinas <catalin.marinas@arm.com> Cc: Chris Zankel <chris@zankel.net> Cc: Geert Uytterhoeven <geert@linux-m68k.org> Cc: Guan Xuetao <gxt@pku.edu.cn> Cc: Ingo Molnar <mingo@redhat.com> Cc: Matt Turner <mattst88@gmail.com> Cc: Michal Simek <monstr@monstr.eu> Cc: Richard Weinberger <richard@nod.at> Cc: Russell King <linux@armlinux.org.uk> Cc: Thomas Gleixner <tglx@linutronix.de> Cc: Tony Luck <tony.luck@intel.com> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org> |

Input: i8042 - enable keyboard wakeups by default when s2idle is used
Previously, on typical consumer laptops, pressing a key on the keyboard when the system is in suspend would cause it to wake up (default or unconditional behaviour). This happens because the EC generates a SCI interrupt in this scenario. That is no longer true on modern laptops based on Intel WhiskeyLake, including Acer Swift SF314-55G, Asus UX333FA, Asus UX433FN and Asus UX533FD. We confirmed with Asus EC engineers that the "Modern Standby" design has been modified so that the EC no longer generates a SCI in this case; the keyboard controller itself should be used for wakeup. In order to retain the standard behaviour of being able to use the keyboard to wake up the system, enable serio wakeups by default on platforms that are using s2idle. PM / sleep: Show freezing tasks that caused a suspend abort
For debug purposes it would be nice to see which tasks caused a suspend abort, i.e. which tasks were still in the process of freezing when a wakeup event occurred. This patch adds the info to pm_debug_messages. Signed-off-by: Todd Brandt <todd.e.brandt@linux.intel.com> Signed-off-by: Rafael J. Wysocki <rafael.j.wysocki@intel.com> |

PM / reboot: Eliminate race between reboot and suspend
At present, "systemctl suspend" and "shutdown" can run in parrallel. A system can suspend after devices_shutdown(), and resume. Then the shutdown task goes on to power off. This causes many devices are not really shut off. Hence replacing reboot_mutex with system_transition_mutex (renamed from pm_mutex) to achieve the exclusion. The renaming of pm_mutex as system_transition_mutex can be better to reflect the purpose of the mutex. treewide: Use array_size() in vmalloc()
The vmalloc() function has no 2-factor argument form, so multiplication factors need to be wrapped in array_size(). This patch replaces cases of: vmalloc(a * b) with: vmalloc(array_size(a, b)) as well as handling cases of: vmalloc(a * b * c) with: vmalloc(array3_size(a, b, c)) This does, however, attempt to ignore constant size factors like: vmalloc(4 * 1024) though any constants defined via macros get caught up in the conversion. Any factors with a sizeof() of "unsigned char", "char", and "u8" were dropped, since they're redundant. The Coccinelle script used for this was: // Fix redundant parens around sizeof(). @@ type TYPE; expression THING, E; @@ ( vmalloc( - (sizeof(TYPE)) * E + sizeof(TYPE) * E , ...) | vmalloc( - (sizeof(THING)) * E + sizeof(THING) * E , ...) ) // Drop single-byte sizes and redundant parens. @@ expression COUNT; typedef u8; typedef __u8; @@ ( vmalloc( - sizeof(u8) * (COUNT) + COUNT , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(__u8) * (COUNT) + COUNT , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(char) * (COUNT) + COUNT , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(unsigned char) * (COUNT) + COUNT , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(u8) * COUNT + COUNT , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(__u8) * COUNT + COUNT , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(char) * COUNT + COUNT , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(unsigned char) * COUNT + COUNT , ...) ) // 2-factor product with sizeof(type/expression) and identifier or constant. @@ type TYPE; expression THING; identifier COUNT_ID; constant COUNT_CONST; @@ ( vmalloc( - sizeof(TYPE) * (COUNT_ID) + array_size(COUNT_ID, sizeof(TYPE)) , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(TYPE) * COUNT_ID + array_size(COUNT_ID, sizeof(TYPE)) , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(TYPE) * (COUNT_CONST) + array_size(COUNT_CONST, sizeof(TYPE)) , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(TYPE) * COUNT_CONST + array_size(COUNT_CONST, sizeof(TYPE)) , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(THING) * (COUNT_ID) + array_size(COUNT_ID, sizeof(THING)) , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(THING) * COUNT_ID + array_size(COUNT_ID, sizeof(THING)) , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(THING) * (COUNT_CONST) + array_size(COUNT_CONST, sizeof(THING)) , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(THING) * COUNT_CONST + array_size(COUNT_CONST, sizeof(THING)) , ...) ) // 2-factor product, only identifiers. @@ identifier SIZE, COUNT; @@ vmalloc( - SIZE * COUNT + array_size(COUNT, SIZE) , ...) // 3-factor product with 1 sizeof(type) or sizeof(expression), with // redundant parens removed. @@ expression THING; identifier STRIDE, COUNT; type TYPE; @@ ( vmalloc( - sizeof(TYPE) * (COUNT) * (STRIDE) + array3_size(COUNT, STRIDE, sizeof(TYPE)) , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(TYPE) * (COUNT) * STRIDE + array3_size(COUNT, STRIDE, sizeof(TYPE)) , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(TYPE) * COUNT * (STRIDE) + array3_size(COUNT, STRIDE, sizeof(TYPE)) , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(TYPE) * COUNT * STRIDE + array3_size(COUNT, STRIDE, sizeof(TYPE)) , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(THING) * (COUNT) * (STRIDE) + array3_size(COUNT, STRIDE, sizeof(THING)) , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(THING) * (COUNT) * STRIDE + array3_size(COUNT, STRIDE, sizeof(THING)) , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(THING) * COUNT * (STRIDE) + array3_size(COUNT, STRIDE, sizeof(THING)) , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(THING) * COUNT * STRIDE + array3_size(COUNT, STRIDE, sizeof(THING)) , ...) ) // 3-factor product with 2 sizeof(variable), with redundant parens removed. @@ expression THING1, THING2; identifier COUNT; type TYPE1, TYPE2; @@ ( vmalloc( - sizeof(TYPE1) * sizeof(TYPE2) * COUNT + array3_size(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE1), sizeof(TYPE2)) , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(TYPE1) * sizeof(THING2) * (COUNT) + array3_size(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE1), sizeof(TYPE2)) , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(THING1) * sizeof(THING2) * COUNT + array3_size(COUNT, sizeof(THING1), sizeof(THING2)) , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(THING1) * sizeof(THING2) * (COUNT) + array3_size(COUNT, sizeof(THING1), sizeof(THING2)) , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(TYPE1) * sizeof(THING2) * COUNT + array3_size(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE1), sizeof(THING2)) , ...) | vmalloc( - sizeof(TYPE1) * sizeof(THING2) * (COUNT) + array3_size(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE1), sizeof(THING2)) , ...) ) // 3-factor product, only identifiers, with redundant parens removed. @@ identifier STRIDE, SIZE, COUNT; @@ ( vmalloc( - (COUNT) * STRIDE * SIZE + array3_size(COUNT, STRIDE, SIZE) , ...) | vmalloc( - COUNT * (STRIDE) * SIZE + array3_size(COUNT, STRIDE, SIZE) , ...) | vmalloc( - COUNT * STRIDE * (SIZE) + array3_size(COUNT, STRIDE, SIZE) , ...) | vmalloc( - (COUNT) * (STRIDE) * SIZE + array3_size(COUNT, STRIDE, SIZE) , ...) | vmalloc( - COUNT * (STRIDE) * (SIZE) + array3_size(COUNT, STRIDE, SIZE) , ...) | vmalloc( - (COUNT) * STRIDE * (SIZE) + array3_size(COUNT, STRIDE, SIZE) , ...) | vmalloc( - (COUNT) * (STRIDE) * (SIZE) + array3_size(COUNT, STRIDE, SIZE) , ...) | vmalloc( - COUNT * STRIDE * SIZE + array3_size(COUNT, STRIDE, SIZE) , ...) ) // Any remaining multi-factor products, first at least 3-factor products // when they're not all constants... @@ expression E1, E2, E3; constant C1, C2, C3; @@ ( vmalloc(C1 * C2 * C3, ...) | vmalloc( - E1 * E2 * E3 + array3_size(E1, E2, E3) , ...) ) // And then all remaining 2 factors products when they're not all constants. @@ expression E1, E2; constant C1, C2; @@ ( vmalloc(C1 * C2, ...) | vmalloc( - E1 * E2 + array_size(E1, E2) , ...) ) Signed-off-by: Kees Cook <keescook@chromium.org> |

PM / suspend: Prevent might sleep splats
timekeeping suspend/resume calls read_persistent_clock() which takes rtc_lock. That results in might sleep warnings because at that point we run with interrupts disabled. We cannot convert rtc_lock to a raw spinlock as that would trigger other might sleep warnings. As a workaround we disable the might sleep warnings by setting system_state to SYSTEM_SUSPEND before calling sysdev_suspend() and restoring it to SYSTEM_RUNNING afer sysdev_resume(). There is no lock contention because hibernate / suspend to RAM is single-CPU at this point. In s2idle's case the system_state is set to SYSTEM_SUSPEND before timekeeping_suspend() which is invoked by the last CPU. In the resume case it set back to SYSTEM_RUNNING after timekeeping_resume() which is invoked by the first CPU in the resume case. The other CPUs will block on tick_freeze_lock. PM / wakeup: Only update last time for active wakeup sources
When wakelock support was added, the wakeup_source_add() function
was updated to set the last_time value of the wakeup source. This
has the unintended side effect of producing confusing output from
pm_print_active_wakeup_sources() when a wakeup source is added
prior to a sleep that is blocked by a different wakeup source.
The function pm_print_active_wakeup_sources() will search for the
most recently active wakeup source when no active source is found.
If a wakeup source is added after a different wakeup source blocks
the system from going to sleep it may have a later last_time value
than the blocking source and be output as the last active wakeup
source even if it has never actually been active.
It looks to me like the change to wakeup_source_add() was made to
prevent the wakelock garbage collection from accidentally dropping
a wakelock during the narrow window between adding the wakelock to
the wakelock list in wakelock_lookup_add() and the activation of
the wakeup source in pm_wake_lock().
This commit changes the behavior so that only the last_time of the
wakeup source used by a wakelock is initialized prior to adding it
to the wakeup source list. This preserves the meaning of the
last_time value as the last time the wakeup source was active and
allows a wakeup source that has never been active to have a
last_time value of 0.

fs: add ksys_sync() helper; remove in-kernel calls to sys_sync()
Using this helper allows us to avoid the in-kernel calls to the sys_sync() syscall. The ksys_ prefix denotes that this function is meant as a drop-in replacement for the syscall. PM: hibernate: Do not subtract NR_FILE_MAPPED in minimum_image_size()
s2disk/s2both may fail unnecessarily and erratically if NR_FILE_MAPPED is high - for instance when using VMs with VirtualBox and perhaps VMware Player. In those situations s2disk becomes unreliable and therefore unusable. A typical scenario is: user issues a s2disk and it fails. User issues a second s2disk immediately after that and it succeeds. And user wonders why. The problem is caused by minimum_image_size() in snapshot.c. The value it returns is roughly 100% too high because NR_FILE_MAPPED is subtracted in its calculation. Eventually the number of preallocated image pages is falsely too low. This doesn't matter as long as NR_FILE_MAPPED-values are in a normal range or in 32bit-environments as the code allows for allocation of additional pages from highmem. But with the high values generated by VirtualBox-VMs (a 2-GB-VM causes NR_FILE_MAPPED go up by 2 GB) it may lead to failure in 64bit-systems. Not subtracting NR_FILE_MAPPED in minimum_image_size() solves the problem. I've done at least hundreds of successful s2both/s2disk now on an x86_64 system (with and without VirtualBox) which gives me some confidence that this is right. It has turned s2disk/s2both from unusable into 100% reliable. Link: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=97201 Signed-off-by: Rainer Fiebig <jrf@mailbox.org> Signed-off-by: Rafael J. mm: remove __GFP_COLD
As the page free path makes no distinction between cache hot and cold pages, there is no real useful ordering of pages in the free list that allocation requests can take advantage of. Juding from the users of __GFP_COLD, it is likely that a number of them are the result of copying other sites instead of actually measuring the impact. Remove the __GFP_COLD parameter which simplifies a number of paths in the page allocator. This is potentially controversial but bear in mind that the size of the per-cpu pagelists versus modern cache sizes means that the whole per-cpu list can often fit in the L3 cache. Hence, there is only a potential benefit for microbenchmarks that alloc/free pages in a tight loop. It's even worse when THP is taken into account which has little or no chance of getting a cache-hot page as the per-cpu list is bypassed and the zeroing of multiple pages will thrash the cache anyway. The truncate microbenchmarks are not shown as this patch affects the allocation path and not the free path. A page fault microbenchmark was tested but it showed no sigificant difference which is not surprising given that the __GFP_COLD branches are a miniscule percentage of the fault path. PM / s2idle: Clear the events_check_enabled flag
Problem: This flag does not get cleared currently in the suspend or resume path in the following cases: * In case some driver's suspend routine returns an error. * Successful s2idle case * etc? Why is this a problem: What happens is that the next suspend attempt could fail even though the user did not enable the flag by writing to /sys/power/wakeup_count. This is 1 use case how the issue can be seen (but similar use case with driver suspend failure can be thought of): 1. Read /sys/power/wakeup_count 2. echo count > /sys/power/wakeup_count 3. echo freeze > /sys/power/wakeup_count 4. Let the system suspend, and wakeup the system using some wake source that calls pm_wakeup_event() e.g. power button or something. 5. Note that the combined wakeup count would be incremented due to the pm_wakeup_event() in the resume path. 6. After resuming the events_check_enabled flag is still set. At this point if the user attempts to freeze again (without writing to /sys/power/wakeup_count), the suspend would fail even though there has been no wake event since the past resume. Address that by clearing the flag just before a resume is completed, so that it is always cleared for the corner cases mentioned above. License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no license
Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. PM / OPP: Move the OPP directory out of power/
The drivers/base/power/ directory is special and contains code related to power management core like system suspend/resume, hibernation, etc. It was fine to keep the OPP code inside it when we had just one file for it, but it is growing now and already has a directory for itself. PM / s2idle: Invoke the ->wake() platform callback earlier
The role of the ->wake() platform callback for suspend-to-idle is to
deal with possible spurious wakeups, among other things. The ACPI
implementation of it, acpi_s2idle_wake(), additionally checks the
conditions for entering the Low Power S0 Idle state by the platform
and reports the ones that have not been met.
However, the ->wake() platform callback is invoked after calling
dpm_noirq_resume_devices(), which means that the power states of some
devices may have changed since s2idle_enter() returned, so some unmet
Low Power S0 Idle conditions may be reported incorrectly as a result
of that.
To avoid these false positives, reorder the invocations of the
dpm_noirq_resume_devices() routine and the ->wake() platform callback
in s2idle_loop().

sched/cpuset/pm: Fix cpuset vs. suspend-resume bugs
Cpusets vs. suspend-resume is _completely_ broken. And it got noticed
because it now resulted in non-cpuset usage breaking too.
On suspend cpuset_cpu_inactive() doesn't call into
cpuset_update_active_cpus() because it doesn't want to move tasks about,
there is no need, all tasks are frozen and won't run again until after
we've resumed everything.
But this means that when we finally do call into
cpuset_update_active_cpus() after resuming the last frozen cpu in
cpuset_cpu_active(), the top_cpuset will not have any difference with
the cpu_active_mask and this it will not in fact do _anything_.
So the cpuset configuration will not be restored. This was largely
hidden because we would unconditionally create identity domains and
mobile users would not in fact use cpusets much. And servers what do use
cpusets tend to not suspend-resume much.
An addition problem is that we'd not in fact wait for the cpuset work to
finish before resuming the tasks, allowing spurious migrations outside
of the specified domains.
Fix the rebuild by introducing cpuset_force_rebuild() and fix the
ordering with cpuset_wait_for_hotplug().

block: replace bi_bdev with a gendisk pointer and partitions index
This way we don't need a block_device structure to submit I/O. The block_device has different life time rules from the gendisk and request_queue and is usually only available when the block device node is open. Other callers need to explicitly create one (e.g. the lightnvm passthrough code, or the new nvme multipathing code). For the actual I/O path all that we need is the gendisk, which exists once per block device. But given that the block layer also does partition remapping we additionally need a partition index, which is used for said remapping in generic_make_request. Note that all the block drivers generally want request_queue or sometimes the gendisk, so this removes a layer of indirection all over the stack. ACPI / PM: Check low power idle constraints for debug only
For SoC to achieve its lowest power platform idle state a set of hardware preconditions must be met. These preconditions or constraints can be obtained by issuing a device specific method (_DSM) with function "1". Refer to the document provided in the link below. Here during initialization (from attach() callback of LPS0 device), invoke function 1 to get the device constraints. Each enabled constraint is stored in a table. The devices in this table are used to check whether they were in required minimum state, while entering suspend. This check is done from platform freeze wake() callback, only when /sys/power/pm_debug_messages attribute is non zero. If any constraint is not met and device is ACPI power managed then it prints the device information to kernel logs. Also if debug is enabled in acpi/sleep.c, the constraint table and state of each device on wake is dumped in kernel logs. Since pm_debug_messages_on setting is used as condition to check constraints outside kernel/power/main.c, pm_debug_messages_on is changed to a global variable. ACPI / PM: Prefer suspend-to-idle over S3 on some systems
Modify the ACPI system sleep support setup code to select suspend-to-idle as the default system sleep state if (1) the ACPI_FADT_LOW_POWER_S0 flag is set in the FADT and (2) the Low Power Idle S0 _DSM interface has been discovered and (3) the default sleep state was not selected from the kernel command line. The main motivation for this change is that systems where the (1) and (2) conditions are met typically ship with OSes that don't exercise the S3 path in the platform firmware which remains untested and turns out to be non-functional at least in some cases. PM / suspend: Use mem_sleep_labels[] strings in messages
Some messages in suspend.c currently print state names from pm_states[], but that may be confusing if the mem_sleep sysfs attribute is changed to anything different from "mem", because in those cases the messages will say either "freeze" or "standby" after writing "mem" to /sys/power/state. Debug messages from the system suspend/hibernation infrastructure can fill up the entire kernel log buffer in some cases and anyway they are only useful for debugging. That includes the core suspend-to-idle code rework, support for the Low Power S0 _DSM interface, and support for the ACPI INT0002 Virtual GPIO device from Hans de Goede (required for USB keyboard wakeup from suspend-to-idle to work on some machines). - Stop trying to export the current CPU frequency via /proc/cpuinfo on x86 as that is inaccurate and confusing (Len Brown). - Rework the way in which the current CPU frequency is exported by the kernel (over the cpufreq sysfs interface) on x86 systems with the APERF and MPERF registers by always using values read from these registers, when available, to compute the current frequency regardless of which cpufreq driver is in use (Len Brown). - Rework the PCI/ACPI device wakeup infrastructure to remove the questionable and artificial distinction between "devices that can wake up the system from sleep states" and "devices that can generate wakeup signals in the working state" from it, which allows the code to be simplified quite a bit (Rafael Wysocki). - Fix the wakeup IRQ framework by making it use SRCU instead of RCU which doesn't allow sleeping in the read-side critical sections, but which in turn is expected to be allowed by the IRQ bus locking infrastructure (Thomas Gleixner). - Modify some computations in the intel_pstate driver to avoid rounding errors resulting from them (Srinivas Pandruvada). - Reduce the overhead of the intel_pstate driver in the HWP (hardware-managed P-states) mode and when the "performance" P-state selection algorithm is in use by making it avoid registering scheduler callbacks in those cases (Len Brown). - Rework the energy_performance_preference sysfs knob in intel_pstate by changing the values that correspond to different symbolic hint names used by it (Len Brown). - Make it possible to use more than one cpuidle driver at the same time on ARM (Daniel Lezcano). - Make it possible to prevent the cpuidle menu governor from using the 0 state by disabling it via sysfs (Nicholas Piggin). - Add support for FFH (Fixed Functional Hardware) MWAIT in ACPI C1 on AMD systems (Yazen Ghannam). - Make the CPPC cpufreq driver take the lowest nonlinear performance information into account (Prashanth Prakash). - Add support for hi3660 to the cpufreq-dt driver, fix the imx6q driver and clean up the sfi, exynos5440 and intel_pstate drivers (Colin Ian King, Krzysztof Kozlowski, Octavian Purdila, Rafael Wysocki, Tao Wang). - Fix a few minor issues in the generic power domains (genpd) framework and clean it up somewhat (Krzysztof Kozlowski, Mikko Perttunen, Viresh Kumar). - Fix a couple of minor issues in the operating performance points (OPP) framework and clean it up somewhat (Viresh Kumar). - Fix a CONFIG dependency in the hibernation core and clean it up slightly (Balbir Singh, Arvind Yadav, BaoJun Luo). - Add rk3228 support to the rockchip-io adaptive voltage scaling (AVS) driver (David Wu). - Fix an incorrect bit shift operation in the RAPL power capping driver (Adam Lessnau). - Add support for the EPP field in the HWP (hardware managed P-states) control register, HWP.EPP, to the x86_energy_perf_policy tool and update msr-index.h with HWP.EPP values (Len Brown). - Fix some minor issues in the turbostat tool (Len Brown). - Add support for AMD family 0x17 CPUs to the cpupower tool and fix a minor issue in it (Sherry Hurwitz). - Assorted cleanups, mostly related to the constification of some data structures (Arvind Yadav, Joe Perches, Kees Cook, Krzysztof Kozlowski). -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2 iQIcBAABCAAGBQJZWrICAAoJEILEb/54YlRxZYMQAIRhfbyDxKq+ByvSilUS8kTA AItwJ8FFzykhiwN75Cqabg4rAGyWma7IRs1vzU7zeC1aEQIn+bTQtvk+utZNI+g2 ANFlDha20q/sXsP/CDMMTIAdW9tSOC0TOvFI9s2V2Y8dJZhoekO4ctx34FAfUS5d Ao6rwSAWCMsCXcGaTAlqTA+TEJmBG7u6Iq6hq6ngltoFwOv3mWWBVn52VVaJ7SMp 9/IPbbLGMFAedrgEBRGCR+MME1xZZpvcZIJaTt1Mgn7Cx3cJaysIUAvqY/SsvFGq 5FcUTcF2qpK3+AGawiAxZIjvOBsGRtIwqKinNIzYWs/NjiIdzmgVAmTeuPtTqp+5 HFehUdtkFcnuDnLqSNzAaZUa7tw84cJkwnbVMnesx0MkG6rZ1SeL22E2Sabpcdsh 3Yo1ThzJSxi59DhiiE92EQnNCEjmCldRy+8q5Ag035muxl6EJYvuNBMnZv/BMCUn ltSNOrmps1DlN+Col8ORIeNzQ1YjYzWMqKAYzSbyccm4ug/iSHx0/DuESmQ4GTlF YCwkmqyWiHrBwpl51jc+4a7SGlMmKRqU+MJes0CjagaaqoUAb8qeBOpzEJ0yNwjZ wtI41l6blE6kbMD3yqGdCfiB2S7GlPVoxa15eX1wRyLH3fLjwwrzJirEaiBS86tI 1PzHZEOmBlh3DYC6DBKA =Wsph -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'pm-4.13-rc1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rafael/linux-pm Pull power management updates from Rafael Wysocki: "The big ticket items here are the rework of suspend-to-idle in order to add proper support for power button wakeup from it on recent Dell laptops and the rework of interfaces exporting the current CPU frequency on x86. ACPI / PM: Ignore spurious SCI wakeups from suspend-to-idle
The ACPI SCI (System Control Interrupt) is set up as a wakeup IRQ during suspend-to-idle transitions and, consequently, any events signaled through it wake up the system from that state. However, on some systems some of the events signaled via the ACPI SCI while suspended to idle should not cause the system to wake up. In fact, quite often they should just be discarded. Arguably, systems should not resume entirely on such events, but in order to decide which events really should cause the system to resume and which are spurious, it is necessary to resume up to the point when ACPI SCIs are actually handled and processed, which is after executing dpm_resume_noirq() in the system resume path. For this reasons, add a loop around freeze_enter() in which the platforms can process events signaled via multiplexed IRQ lines like the ACPI SCI and add suspend-to-idle hooks that can be used for this purpose to struct platform_freeze_ops. In the ACPI case, the ->wake hook is used for checking if the SCI has triggered while suspended and deferring the interrupt-induced system wakeup until the events signaled through it are actually processed sufficiently to decide whether or not the system should resume. In turn, the ->sync hook allows all of the relevant event queues to be flushed so as to prevent events from being missed due to race conditions. In addition to that, some ACPI code processing wakeup events needs to be modified to use the "hard" version of wakeup triggers, so that it will cause a system resume to happen on device-induced wakeup events even if the "soft" mechanism to prevent the system from suspending is not enabled. However, to preserve the existing behavior with respect to suspend-to-RAM, this only is done in the suspend-to-idle case and only if an SCI has occurred while suspended. Signed-off-by: Rafael J. I've re-tested the series both on x86 and on cross-arch defconfigs, and did a bisectability test at a number of random points. Merge branch 'for-4.10/block' of git://git.kernel.dk/linux-block
Pull block layer updates from Jens Axboe: "This is the main block pull request this series. Contrary to previous release, I've kept the core and driver changes in the same branch. We always ended up having dependencies between the two for obvious reasons, so makes more sense to keep them together. That said, I'll probably try and keep more topical branches going forward, especially for cycles that end up being as busy as this one. The major parts of this pull request is: - Improved support for O_DIRECT on block devices, with a small private implementation instead of using the pig that is fs/direct-io.c. From Christoph. - Request completion tracking in a scalable fashion. This is utilized by two components in this pull, the new hybrid polling and the writeback queue throttling code. - Improved support for polling with O_DIRECT, adding a hybrid mode that combines pure polling with an initial sleep. From me. - Support for automatic throttling of writeback queues on the block side. This uses feedback from the device completion latencies to scale the queue on the block side up or down. From me. - Support from SMR drives in the block layer and for SD. From Hannes and Shaun. - Multi-connection support for nbd. From Josef. - Cleanup of request and bio flags, so we have a clear split between which are bio (or rq) private, and which ones are shared. From Christoph. - A set of patches from Bart, that improve how we handle queue stopping and starting in blk-mq. - Support for WRITE_ZEROES from Chaitanya. - Lightnvm updates from Javier/Matias. - Supoort for FC for the nvme-over-fabrics code. PM / sleep: System sleep state selection interface rework
There are systems in which the platform doesn't support any special
sleep states, so suspend-to-idle (PM_SUSPEND_FREEZE) is the only
available system sleep state. However, some user space frameworks
only use the "mem" and (sometimes) "standby" sleep state labels, so
the users of those systems need to modify user space in order to be
able to use system suspend at all and that may be a pain in practice.

PM / Hibernate: allow hibernation with PAGE_POISONING_ZERO
PAGE_POISONING_ZERO disables zeroing new pages on alloc, they are poisoned (zeroed) as they become available. In the hibernate use case, free pages will appear in the system without being cleared, left there by the loading kernel. This patch will make sure free pages are cleared on resume when PAGE_POISONING_ZERO is enabled. We free the pages just after resume because we can't do it later: going through any device resume code might allocate some memory and invalidate the free pages bitmap. Thus we don't need to disable hibernation when PAGE_POISONING_ZERO is enabled. PM / sleep: enable suspend-to-idle even without registered suspend_ops
Suspend-to-idle (aka the "freeze" sleep state) is a system sleep state in which all of the processors enter deepest possible idle state and wait for interrupts right after suspending all the devices. There is no hard requirement for a platform to support and register platform specific suspend_ops to enter suspend-to-idle/freeze state. Only deeper system sleep states like PM_SUSPEND_STANDBY and PM_SUSPEND_MEM rely on such low level support/implementation. suspend-to-idle can be entered as along as all the devices can be suspended. This patch enables the support for suspend-to-idle even on systems that don't have any low level support for deeper system sleep states and/or don't register any platform specific suspend_ops. PM / QoS: avoid calling cancel_delayed_work_sync() during early boot
of_clk_init() ends up calling into pm_qos_update_request() very early during boot where irq is expected to stay disabled. pm_qos_update_request() uses cancel_delayed_work_sync() which correctly assumes that irq is enabled on invocation and unconditionally disables and re-enables it. Gate cancel_delayed_work_sync() invocation with kevented_up() to avoid enabling irq unexpectedly during early boot. PM / hibernate: Fix rtree_next_node() to avoid walking off list ends
rtree_next_node() walks the linked list of leaf nodes to find the next block of pages in the struct memory_bitmap. If it walks off the end of the list of nodes, it walks the list of memory zones to find the next region of memory. If it walks off the end of the list of zones, it returns false. This leaves the struct bm_position's node and zone pointers pointing at their respective struct list_heads in struct mem_zone_bm_rtree. memory_bm_find_bit() uses struct bm_position's node and zone pointers to avoid walking lists and trees if the next bit appears in the same node/zone. It handles these values being stale. Swap rtree_next_node()s 'step then test' to 'test-next then step', this means if we reach the end of memory we return false and leave the node and zone pointers as they were. This fixes a panic on resume using AMD Seattle with 64K pages: [ 6.868732] Freezing user space processes ... (elapsed 0.000 seconds) done. PM / hibernate: Restore processor state before using per-CPU variables
Restore the processor state before calling any other functions to
ensure per-CPU variables can be used with KASLR memory randomization.
Tracing functions use per-CPU variables (GS based on x86) and one was
called just before restoring the processor state fully. It resulted
in a double fault when both the tracing & the exception handler
functions tried to use a per-CPU variable.

mm, vmscan: move LRU lists to node
This moves the LRU lists from the zone to the node and related data such as counters, tracing, congestion tracking and writeback tracking. Unfortunately, due to reclaim and compaction retry logic, it is necessary to account for the number of LRU pages on both zone and node logic. Most reclaim logic is based on the node counters but the retry logic uses the zone counters which do not distinguish inactive and active sizes. It would be possible to leave the LRU counters on a per-zone basis but it's a heavier calculation across multiple cache lines that is much more frequent than the retry checks. Other than the LRU counters, this is mostly a mechanical patch but note that it introduces a number of anomalies. For example, the scans are per-zone but using per-node counters. We also mark a node as congested when a zone is congested. This causes weird problems that are fixed later but is easier to review. In the event that there is excessive overhead on 32-bit systems due to the nodes being on LRU then there are two potential solutions 1. Long-term isolation of highmem pages when reclaim is lowmem When pages are skipped, they are immediately added back onto the LRU list. If lowmem reclaim persisted for long periods of time, the same highmem pages get continually scanned. The idea would be that lowmem keeps those pages on a separate list until a reclaim for highmem pages arrives that splices the highmem pages back onto the LRU. It potentially could be implemented similar to the UNEVICTABLE list. That would reduce the skip rate with the potential corner case is that highmem pages have to be scanned and reclaimed to free lowmem slab pages. 2. Linear scan lowmem pages if the initial LRU shrink fails This will break LRU ordering but may be preferable and faster during memory pressure than skipping LRU pages. PM / hibernate: Introduce test_resume mode for hibernation
test_resume mode is to verify if the snapshot data written to swap device can be successfully restored to memory. It is useful to ease the debugging process on hibernation, since this mode can not only bypass the BIOSes/bootloader, but also the system re-initialization. x86 / hibernate: Use hlt_play_dead() when resuming from hibernation
On Intel hardware, native_play_dead() uses mwait_play_dead() by default and only falls back to the other methods if that fails. That also happens during resume from hibernation, when the restore (boot) kernel runs disable_nonboot_cpus() to take all of the CPUs except for the boot one offline. However, that is problematic, because the address passed to __monitor() in mwait_play_dead() is likely to be written to in the last phase of hibernate image restoration and that causes the "dead" CPU to start executing instructions again. Unfortunately, the page containing the address in that CPU's instruction pointer may not be valid any more at that point. First, that page may have been overwritten with image kernel memory contents already, so the instructions the CPU attempts to execute may simply be invalid. Second, the page tables previously used by that CPU may have been overwritten by image kernel memory contents, so the address in its instruction pointer is impossible to resolve then. A report from Varun Koyyalagunta and investigation carried out by Chen Yu show that the latter sometimes happens in practice. To prevent it from happening, temporarily change the smp_ops.play_dead pointer during resume from hibernation so that it points to a special "play dead" routine which uses hlt_play_dead() and avoids the inadvertent "revivals" of "dead" CPUs this way. A slightly unpleasant consequence of this change is that if the system is hibernated with one or more CPUs offline, it will generally draw more power after resume than it did before hibernation, because the physical state entered by CPUs via hlt_play_dead() is higher-power than the mwait_play_dead() one in the majority of cases. It is possible to work around this, but it is unclear how much of a problem that's going to be in practice, so the workaround will be implemented later if it turns out to be necessary. PM / hibernate: Image data protection during restoration
Make it possible to protect all pages holding image data during hibernate image restoration by setting them read-only (so as to catch attempts to write to those pages after image data have been stored in them). This adds overhead to image restoration code (it may cause large page mappings to be split as a result of page flags changes) and the errors it protects against should never happen in theory, so the feature is only active after passing hibernate=protect_image to the command line of the restore kernel. Also it only is built if CONFIG_DEBUG_RODATA is set. Signed-off-by: Rafael J. Wysocki <rafael.j.wysocki@intel.com> |

PM / hibernate: Add missing braces in __register_nosave_region()
One branch of an if/else statement in __register_nosave_region() is formatted against the kernel coding style which causes the code to look slightly odd. To fix that, add missing braces to it. No functional changes. Signed-off-by: Rafael J. Wysocki <rafael.j.wysocki@intel.com> |

PM / hibernate: Clean up comments in snapshot.c
Many comments in kernel/power/snapshot.c do not follow the general comment formatting rules. They look odd, some of them are outdated too, some are hard to parse and generally difficult to understand. Clean them up to make them easier to comprehend. No functional changes. PM / hibernate: Clean up function headers in snapshot.c
The formatting of some function headers in kernel/power/snapshot.c is not consistent with the general kernel coding style and with the formatting of some other function headers in the same file. Make all of them follow the same formatting convention. No functional changes. Signed-off-by: Rafael J. Wysocki <rafael.j.wysocki@intel.com> |
