When btrfs is writing the super blocks, it send barrier flushes to make
sure writeback caching drives get all the metadata on disk in the
right order.
But, we have two bugs in the way these are sent down. When doing
full commits (not via the tree log), we are sending the barrier down
before the last super when it should be going down before the first.
In multi-device setups, we should be waiting for the barriers to
complete on all devices before writing any of the supers.
Both of these bugs can cause corruptions on power failures. We fix it
with some new code to send down empty barriers to all devices before
writing the first super.
Alexandre Oliva found the multi-device bug. Arne Jansen did the async
barrier loop.

Prevent tracing of preempt_disable() in get_cpu_var() in
kvm_clock_read(). When CONFIG_DEBUG_PREEMPT is enabled,
preempt_disable/enable() are traced and this causes the function_graph
tracer to go into an infinite recursion. By open coding the
preempt_disable() around the get_cpu_var(), we can use the notrace
version which prevents preempt_disable/enable() from being traced and
prevents the recursion.

This adds a new optional chunk to the CS ioctl that specifies optional flags
to the CS parser. Why this is useful is explained below. Note that some regs
no longer need the NOP relocation packet if this feature is enabled.
Tested on r300g and r600g with this flag disabled and enabled.
Assume there are two contexts sharing the same mipmapped tiled texture.
One context wants to render into the first mipmap and the other one
wants to render into the last mipmap. As you probably know, the hardware
has a MACRO_SWITCH feature, which turns off macro tiling for small mipmaps,
but that only applies to samplers.
(at least on r300-r500, though later hardware likely behaves the same)
So we want to just re-set the tiling flags before rendering (writing
packets), right? ... No. The contexts run in parallel, so they may
set the tiling flags simultaneously and then fire their command streams
also simultaneously. The last one setting the flags wins, the other one
loses.
Another problem is when one context wants to render into the first and
the last mipmap in one CS. Impossible. It must flush before changing
tiling flags and do the rendering into the smaller mipmaps in another CS.
Yet another problem is that writing copy_blit in userspace would be a mess
involving re-setting tiling flags to please the kernel, and causing races
with other contexts at the same time.
The only way out of this is to send tiling flags with each CS, ideally
with each relocation. But we already do that through the registers.
So let's just use what we have in the registers.

Newer versions of MINIX can create filesystems that allocate an extra
bitmap block. Mounting of this succeeds, but doing a statfs call will
result in an oops in count_free because of a negative number being used
for the bh index.
Avoid this by verifying the number of allocated blocks at mount time,
erroring out if there are not enough and make statfs ignore the extras
if there are too many.

__remove_hrtimer() attempts to reprogram the clockevent device when
the timer being removed is the next to expire. However,
__remove_hrtimer() reprograms the clockevent *before* removing the
timer from the timerqueue and thus when hrtimer_force_reprogram()
finds the next timer to expire it finds the timer we're trying to
remove.
This is especially noticeable when the system switches to NOHz mode
and the system tick is removed. The timer tick is removed from the
system but the clockevent is programmed to wakeup in another HZ
anyway.
Silence the extra wakeup by removing the timer from the timerqueue
before calling hrtimer_force_reprogram() so that we actually program
the clockevent for the next timer to expire.
This was broken by 998adc3 "hrtimers: Convert hrtimers to use
timerlist infrastructure".

Dummy, non-zero definitions for HPAGE_MASK and HPAGE_SIZE were added in
51c6f666fc ("mm: ZAP_BLOCK causes redundant work") to avoid a divide
by zero in generic kernel code.
That code has since been removed, but probably should never have been
added in the first place: we don't want HPAGE_SIZE to act like PAGE_SIZE
for code that is working with hugepages, for example, when the
dependency on CONFIG_HUGETLB_PAGE has not been fulfilled.
Because hugepage size can differ from architecture to architecture, each
is required to have their own definitions for both HPAGE_MASK and
HPAGE_SIZE. This is always done in arch/*/include/asm/page.h.
So, just remove the dummy and dangerous definitions since they are no
longer needed and reveals the correct dependencies. Tested on
architectures using the definitions with allyesconfig: x86 (even with
thp), hppa, mips, powerpc, s390, sh3, sh4, sparc, and sparc64, and with
defconfig on ia64.

Randy Dunlap reports that the ex131x driver doesn't build when CONFIG_PM_SLEEP is not enabled.
This bug was introduced when moving code around to remove some forward declarations earlier, the #endif part of #ifdef CONFIG_PM_SLEEP was not moved at the same time. Now fixed by moving it to its proper place.

postponed the freezing of kernel threads to after preallocating memory
for hibernation. But while doing that, the hibernation test TEST_FREEZER
and the test mode HIBERNATION_TESTPROC were not moved accordingly.
As a result, when using these test modes, it only goes upto the freezing of
userspace and exits, when in fact it should go till the complete end of task
freezing stage, namely the freezing of kernel threads as well.
So, move these points of exit to appropriate places so that freezing of
kernel threads is also tested while using these test harnesses.

commit f39925dbde (ipv4: Cache learned redirect information in
inetpeer.) introduced a regression in ICMP redirect handling.
It assumed ipv4_dst_check() would be called because all possible routes
were attached to the inetpeer we modify in ip_rt_redirect(), but thats
not true.
commit 7cc9150ebe (route: fix ICMP redirect validation) tried to fix
this but solution was not complete. (It fixed only one route)
So we must lookup existing routes (including different TOS values) and
call check_peer_redir() on them.

I will no longer be maintaining XFS for SGI. Ben Myers
(bpm@sgi.com) has agreed to be the primary maintainer
for XFS in my place. I will continue to be able to push
commits to the SGI XFS tree if required. As such I will
continue to be a designated XFS maintainer, but plan to
serve in more of a backup role.

ping module incorrectly increments ICMP_MIB_INERRORS if feeded with a
frame not belonging to its own sockets.
RFC 2011 states that ICMP_MIB_INERRORS should count "the number of ICMP
messages which the entiry received but determined as having
ICMP-specific errors (bad ICMP checksums, bad length, etc.)."

Fix for ftdi_set_termios() glitching output
ftdi_set_termios() is constantly setting the baud rate, data bits and parity
unnecessarily on every call, . When called while characters are being
transmitted can cause the FTDI chip to corrupt the serial port bit stream
output by stalling the output half a bit during the output of a character.
Simple fix by skipping this setting if the baud rate/data bits/parity are
unchanged.

I had a brief run with strace on the getty and it was doing ioctl()s on
each call but it didn't look relavant to the problem. I think the issue is
that XON/XOFF flow control was being implmented via hardware - for the ixoff
to allow the user to use XON/XOFF to control output. Unfortunately it would
send 3 Control URBs updating all of the settings after each piece of input
I am trying to work around the issue of gmail messing with the tab/spacing
by submitting via SMTP via gmail which I believe should fix the issue.
The patch is against v3.2-rc2 and compiles - but no additional testing in
this kernel has been done.

Problems with NVIDIA's OHCI host controllers persist. After looking
carefully through the spec, I finally realized that when a controller
is reset it then automatically goes into a SUSPEND state in which it
is completely quiescent (no DMA and no IRQs) and from which it will
not awaken until the system puts it into the OPERATIONAL state.
Therefore there's no need to worry about controllers being in the
RESET state for extended periods, or remaining in the OPERATIONAL
state during system shutdown. The proper action for device
initialization is to put the controller into the RESET state (if it's
not there already) and then to issue a software reset. Similarly, the
proper action for device shutdown is simply to do a software reset.
This patch (as1499) implements such an approach. It simplifies
initialization and shutdown, and allows the NVIDIA shutdown-quirk code
to be removed.

The existing vm_area_register_early() allows for early vmalloc space
allocation. However upcoming cleanups in the ARM architecture require
that some fixed locations in the vmalloc area be reserved also very early.
The name "vm_area_register_early" would have been a good name for the
reservation part without the allocation. Since it is already in use with
different semantics, let's create vm_area_add_early() instead.
Both vm_area_register_early() and vm_area_add_early() can be used together
meaning that the former is now implemented using the later where it is
ensured that no conflicting areas are added, but no attempt is made to
make the allocation scheme in vm_area_register_early() more sophisticated.
After all, you must know what you're doing when using those functions.

Some upcoming changes must know the VMALLOC_START value, which is based
on high_memory, before bootmem_init() is called.
The best location to set it is in sanity_check_meminfo() where the needed
computation is already done, and in the non MMU case it is trivial to do
now that the meminfo array is already sorted at that point.

The meminfo array has to be sorted before sanity_check_meminfo() in
arch/arm/mm/mmu.c is called for it to work properly. This also allows
for a simpler find_limits() in arch/arm/mm/init.c.
The sort is moved to arch/arm/kernel/setup.c because that's where the
meminfo array is populated. Eventually this should be improved upon
to make the memory bank parser a bit more robust against problems
such as overlapping memory ranges.

Let's say we have "OUTPUT_DIR = build/${TEST_NAME}", and we're iterating
a test. In the second iteration of a test, the TEST_NAME of the test
we're repeating is not used. Instead, ${TEST_NAME} appears literally:
touch /home/rabin/kernel/test/build/${TEST_NAME}/.config ... SUCCESS
Fix this by making __eval_option() check the parent test options
for a repeated test.
