Viresh Kumar 3e08b2df12 thermal: cpu_cooling: remove cpufreq_cooling_get_level()
There is only one user of cpufreq_cooling_get_level() and that already
has pointer to the cpufreq_cdev structure. It can directly call
get_level() instead and we can get rid of cpufreq_cooling_get_level().

After the lock is dropped, it is possible that the cpufreq_dev gets

Pull thermal management updates from Zhang Rui:

 - Fix a problem where orderly_shutdown() is called for multiple times
   due to multiple critical overheating events raised in a short period
   by platform thermal driver. (Keerthy)

 - Introduce a backup thermal shutdown mechanism, which invokes
   kernel_power_off()/emergency_restart() directly, after
   orderly_shutdown() being issued for certain amount of time(specified
   via Kconfig). This is useful in certain conditions that userspace may
   be unable to power off the system in a clean manner and leaves the
   system in a critical state, like in the middle of driver probing
   phase. (Keerthy)

 - Introduce a new interface in thermal devfreq_cooling code so that the
   driver can provide more precise data regarding actual power to the
   thermal governor every time the power budget is calculated. (Lukasz
   Luba)

 - Introduce BCM 2835 soc thermal driver and northstar thermal driver,
   within a new sub-folder. (Rafał Miłecki)

 - Introduce DA9062/61 thermal driver. (Steve Twiss)

 - Remove non-DT booting on TI-SoC driver. Also add support to fetching
   coefficients from DT. (Keerthy)

 - Refactorf RCAR Gen3 thermal driver. (Niklas Söderlund)

 - Small fix on MTK and intel-soc-dts thermal driver. (Dawei Chien,

Keerthy ef1d87e06a thermal: core: Add a back up thermal shutdown mechanism
orderly_poweroff is triggered when a graceful shutdown
of system is desired. This may be used in many critical states of the
kernel such as when subsystems detects conditions such as critical
temperature conditions. However, in certain conditions in system
boot up sequences like those in the middle of driver probes being
initiated, userspace will be unable to power off the system in a clean
manner and leaves the system in a critical state. In cases like these,
the /sbin/poweroff will return success (having forked off to attempt
powering off the system. However, the system overall will fail to
completely poweroff (since other modules will be probed) and the system
is still functional with no userspace (since that would have shut itself
off).

However, there is no clean way of detecting such failure of userspace
powering off the system. In such scenarios, it is necessary for a backup
workqueue to be able to force a shutdown of the system when orderly
shutdown is not successful after a configurable time period.

Keerthy e441fd6866 thermal: core: Allow orderly_poweroff to be called only once
thermal_zone_device_check --> thermal_zone_device_update -->
handle_thermal_trip --> handle_critical_trips --> orderly_poweroff

The above sequence happens every 250/500 mS based on the configuration.
The orderly_poweroff function is getting called every 250/500 mS.
With a full fledged file system it takes at least 5-10 Seconds to
power off gracefully.

In that period due to the thermal_zone_device_check triggering
periodically the thermal work queues bombard with
orderly_poweroff calls multiple times eventually leading to
failures in gracefully powering off the system.

Make sure that orderly_poweroff is called only once.

The interrupt request call in Intel SoC DTS driver may fail if
there is no underlying BIOS support. However, the user space

Lukasz Luba 771ffa14ea trace: thermal: add another parameter 'power' to the tracing function
This patch adds another parameter to the trace function:
trace_thermal_power_devfreq_get_power().

In case when we call directly driver's code for the real power,
we do not have static/dynamic_power values. Instead we get total
power in the '*power' value. The 'static_power' and
'dynamic_power' are set to 0.

Therefore, we have to trace that '*power' value in this scenario.

Lukasz Luba 2be83da85a thermal: devfreq_cooling: add new interface for direct power read
This patch introduces a new interface for device drivers connected to
devfreq_cooling in the thermal framework: get_real_power().

Some devices have more sophisticated methods (like power counters)
to approximate the actual power that they use.
In the previous implementation we had a pre-calculated power
table which was then scaled by 'utilization'
('busy_time' and 'total_time' taken from devfreq 'last_status').

With this new interface the driver can provide more precise data
regarding actual power to the thermal governor every time the power
budget is calculated. We then use this value and calculate the real
resource utilization scaling factor.

Steve Twiss 608567aac3 thermal: da9062/61: Thermal junction temperature monitoring driver
Add junction temperature monitoring supervisor device driver, compatible
with the DA9062 and DA9061 PMICs. A MODULE_DEVICE_TABLE() macro is added.

If the PMIC's internal junction temperature rises above T_WARN (125 degC)
an interrupt is issued. This T_WARN level is defined as the
THERMAL_TRIP_HOT trip-wire inside the device driver.

The thermal triggering mechanism is interrupt based and happens when the
temperature rises above a given threshold level. The component cannot
return an exact temperature, it only has knowledge if the temperature is
above or below a given threshold value. A status bit must be polled to
detect when the temperature falls below that threshold level again. A
kernel work queue is configured to repeatedly poll and detect when the
temperature falls below this trip-wire, between 1 and 10 second intervals
(defaulting at 3 seconds).

This scheme is provided as an example. It would be expected that any
final implementation will also include a notify() function and any of these
settings could be altered to match the application where appropriate.

When over-temperature is reached, the interrupt from the DA9061/2 will be
repeatedly triggered. The IRQ is therefore disabled when the first
over-temperature event happens and the status bit is polled using a
work-queue until it becomes false.

This strategy is designed to allow the periodic transmission of uevents
(HOT trip point) as the first level of temperature supervision method. It
is intended for non-invasive temperature control, where the necessary
measures for cooling the system down are left to the host software. Once
the temperature falls again, the IRQ is re-enabled so a new critical
over-temperature event can be detected.

Niklas Söderlund 7d4b269776 thermal: rcar_gen3_thermal: enable hardware interrupts for trip points
Enable hardware trip points by implementing the set_trips callback. The
thermal core will take care of setting the initial trip point window and
to update it once the driver reports a TSC has moved outside it.

The interrupt structure for this device is a bit odd. There is not a
dedicated IRQ for each TSC, instead the interrupts are shared between
all TSCs. IRQn is fired if the temp monitored in IRQTEMPn is reached in
any of the TSCs, example IRQ3 is fired if temperature in IRQTEMP3 is
reached in either TSC0, TSC1 or TSC2.

For this reason the usage of interrupts in this driver is an all-on or
all-off design. When an interrupt happens all TSCs are checked and all
thermal zones are updated. This could be refined to be more fine grained
but the thermal core takes care of only updating the thermal zones that
have left their trip point window.

Niklas Söderlund 78aefd2d59 thermal: rcar_gen3_thermal: add delay in .thermal_init on r8a7796
The .thermal_init needs to be delayed a short amount of time to allow
for the TEMP register to contain something useful. If it's not delayed
these warnings are common during boot:

thermal thermal_zone0: failed to read out thermal zone (-5)
thermal thermal_zone1: failed to read out thermal zone (-5)
thermal thermal_zone2: failed to read out thermal zone (-5)

The warnings are triggered by the first call to .get_temp() while the
TEMP register contains 0 and rcar_gen3_thermal_get_temp() returns -EIO
since a TEMP value of 0 will result in a temperature reading which is
out of specifications.

This should have been done in the initial commit which adds the driver

The device_unregister call in thermal_zone_device_unregister causes the
thermal_zone_device structure to be freed before the call to free the
dynamically allocated attribute groups. This leads to a kernel panic.

Furthermore, the 4 calls to free the trip point attribute structures
occur before the call to unregister the device, leading to a kernel
panic when sysfs attempts to access the attributes to remove them.

Here is an example of a kernel panic when the cpu thermal zones are

The cooling_cpufreq_lock was being used to protect cpufreq_dev_count as

I expanded the scope of cooling_list_lock to also cover cpufreq_dev_count.
We could also convert cpufreq_dev_count into an atomic.

In some cases, we need adjust the trip point.

Thomas Gleixner 411bb3835f thermal/x86_pkg_temp: Move work into package struct
Delayed work structs are held in a static percpu storage, which makes no
sense at all because work is strictly per package and we never schedule
more than one work per package.

Aside of that the work cancelation in the hotplug is broken when the work
is queued on the outgoing cpu and canceled. Nothing reschedules the work on
another online cpu in the package, so the interrupts stay disabled and the
work_scheduled flag stays active.

Move the delayed work struct into the package struct, which is the only
sensible place to have it.

To simplify the cancelation logic schedule the work always on the cpu which
is the target for the sysfs files. This is required so the cancelation
logic in the cpu offline path cancels only when the outgoing cpu is the
current target and reschedule the work when there is still a online
CPU in the package.

Thomas Gleixner ab47bd964a thermal/x86_pkg_temp: Sanitize locking
The work cancellation code, the thermal zone unregistering, the work code
and the interrupt notification function are racy against each other and
against cpu hotplug and module exit. The random locking sprinkeled all
over the place does not help anything and probably exists to make people
feel good. The resulting issues (mainly use after free) are probably
hard to trigger, but they clearly exist

Protect the package list with a spinlock so it can be accessed from the
interrupt notifier and also from the work function. The add/removal code in
the hotplug callbacks take the lock for list manipulation. That makes sure
that on removal neither the interrupt notifier nor the work function can
access the about to be freed package structure anymore.

The thermal zone unregistering is another trainwreck. It's not serialized
against the work function. So unregistering the zone device can race with
the work function and cause havoc.

Protect the thermal zone with a mutex, which is held in the work
function to make sure that the zone device is not being unregistered
concurrently.

To solve the module exit issues, we simply invoke the cpu offline callback
and let it work its magic. For that it's required to keep track of the
participating cpus in a package, because topology_core_mask is not affected
by calling the offline callback for teardown of the driver, so it would
never free the package as there is always a valid target in
topology_core_mask.

Use proper names for the locks so it's clear what they are for and add a
pile of comments to explain the protection rules.

It's amazing that fixing the locking and adding 30 lines of comments
explaining it still removes more lines than it adds.

Petr Mladek 8d962ac7f3 thermal/intel_powerclamp: Convert the kthread to kthread worker API
Kthreads are currently implemented as an infinite loop. Each
has its own variant of checks for terminating, freezing,
awakening. In many cases it is unclear to say in which state
it is and sometimes it is done a wrong way.

The plan is to convert kthreads into kthread_worker or workqueues
API. It allows to split the functionality into separate operations.
It helps to make a better structure. Also it defines a clean state
where no locks are taken, IRQs blocked, the kthread might sleep
or even be safely migrated.

The kthread worker API is useful when we want to have a dedicated
single thread for the work. It helps to make sure that it is
available when needed. Also it allows a better control, e.g.
define a scheduling priority.

This patch converts the intel powerclamp kthreads into the kthread
worker because they need to have a good control over the assigned
CPUs.

IMHO, the most natural way is to split one cycle into two works.
First one does some balancing and let the CPU work normal
way for some time. The second work checks what the CPU has done
in the meantime and put it into C-state to reach the required
idle time ratio. The delay between the two works is achieved
by the delayed kthread work.

The two works have to share some data that used to be local
variables of the single kthread function. This is achieved
by the new per-CPU struct kthread_worker_data. It might look
as a complication. On the other hand, the long original kthread
function was not nice either.

The patch tries to avoid extra init and cleanup works. All the
actions might be done outside the thread. They are moved
to the functions that create or destroy the worker. Especially,
I checked that the timers are assigned to the right CPU.

The two works are queuing each other. It makes it a bit tricky to
break it when we want to stop the worker. We use the global and
per-worker "clamping" variables to make sure that the re-queuing
eventually stops. We also cancel the works to make it faster.
Note that the canceling is not reliable because the handling
of the two variables and queuing is not synchronized via a lock.
But it is not a big deal because it is just an optimization.
The job is stopped faster than before in most cases.

Javi Merino 3aa5374376 devfreq_cooling: pass a pointer to devfreq in the power model callbacks
When the devfreq cooling device was designed, it was an oversight not to
pass a pointer to the struct devfreq as the first parameters of the
callbacks. The design patterns of the kernel suggest it for a good
reason.

By passing a pointer to struct devfreq, the driver can register one
function that works with multiple devices. With the current
implementation, a driver that can work with multiple devices has to
create multiple copies of the same function with different parameters so
that each devfreq_cooling_device can use the appropriate one. By
passing a pointer to struct devfreq, the driver can identify which
device it's referring to.

Johannes Berg 56989f6d85 genetlink: mark families as __ro_after_init
Now genl_register_family() is the only thing (other than the
users themselves, perhaps, but I didn't find any doing that)
writing to the family struct.

In all families that I found, genl_register_family() is only
called from __init functions (some indirectly, in which case
I've add __init annotations to clarifly things), so all can
actually be marked __ro_after_init.

This protects the data structure from accidental corruption.

Johannes Berg a07ea4d994 genetlink: no longer support using static family IDs
Static family IDs have never really been used, the only
use case was the workaround I introduced for those users
that assumed their family ID was also their multicast
group ID.

Additionally, because static family IDs would never be
reserved by the generic netlink code, using a relatively
low ID would only work for built-in families that can be
registered immediately after generic netlink is started,
which is basically only the control family (apart from
the workaround code, which I also had to add code for so
it would reserve those IDs)

Thus, anything other than GENL_ID_GENERATE is flawed and
luckily not used except in the cases I mentioned. Move
those workarounds into a few lines of code, and then get
rid of GENL_ID_GENERATE entirely, making it more robust.

Sascha Hauer 060c034a97 thermal: Add support for hardware-tracked trip points
This adds support for hardware-tracked trip points to the device tree
thermal sensor framework.

The framework supports an arbitrary number of trip points. Whenever
the current temperature is updated, the trip points immediately
below and above the current temperature are found. A .set_trips
callback is then called with the temperatures. If there is no trip
point above or below the current temperature, the passed trip
temperature will be -INT_MAX or INT_MAX respectively. In this callback,
the driver should program the hardware such that it is notified
when either of these trip points are triggered. When a trip point
is triggered, the driver should call `thermal_zone_device_update'
for the respective thermal zone. This will cause the trip points
to be updated again.

If .set_trips is not implemented, the framework behaves as before.

Rajendra Nayak d059c739aa thermal: qcom: tsens-8996: Add support for 8996 family of SoCs
The TSENS controller in 8996 family of SoCs is capable of converting the
ADC code outputs to real temperature values (in decidegree Celsius).
It can also be programmed to provide raw ADC code, but the secure software
on 8996 programs it to provide real temperatures and also does the needed
calibrations.

We check the valid bit to ensure valid data is read by the AHB master.
And the spec recommends the below algorithm to read data 3 consecutive
times, which takes care of the worst case delay taken to propagate the
updated data to the register.

Rajendra Nayak 20d4fd84bf thermal: qcom: tsens-8960: Add support for 8960 family of SoCs
8960 family of SoCs have the TSENS device as part of GCC, hence
the driver probes the virtual child device created by GCC and
uses the parent to extract all DT properties and reuses the GCC
regmap.

Also GCC/TSENS are part of a domain thats not always ON.
Hence add .suspend and .resume hooks to save and restore some of
the inited register context.

Also 8960 family have some of the TSENS init sequence thats
required to be done by the HLOS driver (some later versions of TSENS
do not export these registers to non-secure world, and hence need
these initializations to be done by secure bootloaders)

8660 from the same family has just one sensor and hence some register
offset/layout differences which need special handling in the driver.

Brendan Jackman a305a4387a thermal: cpu_cooling: Fix NULL dereference in cpufreq_state2power
Currently all CPU cooling devices share a
`struct thermal_cooling_device_ops` instance. The thermal core uses the
presence of functions in this struct to determine if a cooling device
has a power model (see cdev_is_power_actor). cpu_cooling.c adds the
power model functions to the shared struct when a device is registered
with a power model.

Therefore, if a CPU cooling device is registered using
[of_]cpufreq_power_cooling_register, _all_ devices will be determined to
have a power model, including any registered with
[of_]cpufreq_cooling_register. This can result in cpufreq_state2power
being called on a device where dyn_power_table is NULL.

With this commit, instead of having a shared thermal_cooling_device_ops
which is mutated, we have two versions: one with the power functions and
one without.

Michele Di Giorgio d0b7306d20 thermal: fix race condition when updating cooling device
When multiple thermal zones are bound to the same cooling device, multiple
kernel threads may want to update the cooling device state by calling
thermal_cdev_update(). Having cdev not protected by a mutex can lead to a race
condition. Consider the following situation with two kernel threads k1 and k2:

	    Thread k1				Thread k2
                                    ||
                                    ||  call thermal_cdev_update()
                                    ||      ...
                                    ||      set_cur_state(cdev, target);
    call power_actor_set_power()    ||
        ...                         ||
        instance->target = state;   ||
        cdev->updated = false;      ||
                                    ||      cdev->updated = true;
                                    ||      // completes execution
    call thermal_cdev_update()      ||
        // cdev->updated == true    ||
        return;                     ||
                                    \/
                                    time

k2 has already looped through the thermal instances looking for the deepest
cooling device state and is preempted right before setting cdev->updated to
true. Now, k1 runs, modifies the thermal instance state and sets cdev->updated
to false. Then, k1 is preempted and k2 continues the execution by setting
cdev->updated to true, therefore preventing k1 from performing the update.
Notice that this is not an issue if k2 looks at the instance->target modified by
k1 "after" it is assigned by k1. In fact, in this case the update will happen
anyway and k1 can safely return immediately from thermal_cdev_update().

This may lead to a situation where a thermal governor never updates the cooling
device. For example, this is the case for the step_wise governor: when calling
the function thermal_zone_trip_update(), the governor may always get a new state
equal to the old one (which, however, wasn't notified to the cooling device) and
will therefore skip the update.

RIP points to the following lines:

	compensation = get_compensation(target_ratio);
	interval = duration_jiffies*100/(target_ratio+compensation);

A solution would be to switch the following two commands in
powerclamp_set_cur_state():

	set_target_ratio = 0;
	end_power_clamp();

But I think that the zero division might happen also when target_ratio
is non-zero because the compensation might be negative. Therefore
we also check the sum of target_ratio and compensation explicitly.

Also the compensated_ratio variable is always set. Therefore there
is no need to initialize it.

Arnd Bergmann a977c41ec6 thermal: tegra: mark PM functions __maybe_unused
After the PM support has been added to this driver, we get

This marks the two PM functions as __maybe_unused to shut up
the warning. This is preferred over adding an #ifdef around
them, as it is harder to get wrong, and provides better

Leo Yan 469ace07c2 thermal: hisilicon: fix IRQ imbalance enabling
When register sensors into thermal zone during initialization phase, it
reports error for IRQ imbalance enabling:

[    2.040713] WARNING: at kernel/irq/manage.c:513

[    2.040749] LR is at __enable_irq+0x74/0x84

This warning is for IRQ imbalance enabling, which is caused by
enable_irq() twice. During sensor's initialization it tries to enable
IRQ, the driver will call thermal_zone_of_sensor_register() to bind
sensors and read sensor's temperature. But at this moment the flag
"data->irq_enabled" has been not initialized as correct state, so it
finally introduces the function enabled_irq() to be called twice. In
essentially this is caused by the flag "data->irq_enabled" is
inconsistent with real hardware IRQ enabling state.

So this patch is to fix this issue, firstly init "irq_enabled" flag
before binding sensors to thermal zone. Also change to use the function
irq_get_irqchip_state() to read back real interrupt line state.

Leo Yan 439dc96811 thermal: hisilicon: support to use any sensor
In current code sensor driver registers all 4 sensors together and if
any of them has not bound to thermal zone successfully then driver will
return failure for driver's initialization. As a result, if DT binds
thermal zone with only one sensor, then the thermal driver will not work
well anymore.

So this patch is to fix this issue. It allows the thermal sensor driver
can register any number sensors at initialization phase, and fix up code
for other related code to skip related sensor's accessing if the sensor
has not been enabled in initialization phase.
