Linus Torvalds 4cdf8dbe2d Merge branch 'work.uaccess2' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/viro/vfs
Pull uaccess.h prepwork from Al Viro:
"Preparations to tree-wide switch to use of linux/uaccess.h (which,
obviously, will allow to start unifying stuff for real). The last step
  there, ie

    PATT='^[[:blank:]]*#[[:blank:]]*include[[:blank:]]*<asm/uaccess.h>'
    sed -i -e "s!$PATT!#include <linux/uaccess.h>!" \
            `git grep -l "$PATT"|grep -v ^include/linux/uaccess.h`

is not taken here - I would prefer to do it once just before or just
after -rc1. However, everything should be ready for it"

* 'work.uaccess2' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/viro/vfs:
remove a stray reference to asm/uaccess.h in docs
  sparc64: separate extable_64.h, switch elf_64.h to it
score: separate extable.h, switch module.h to it
mips: separate extable.h, switch module.h to it
  x86: separate extable.h, switch sections.h to it
remove stray include of asm/uaccess.h from cacheflush.h
  mn10300: remove a bogus processor.h->uaccess.h include
xtensa: split uaccess.h into C and asm sides
  bonding: quit messing with IOCTL

Vladimir Zapolskiy 39487f6688 watchdog: imx2_wdt: add pretimeout function support
The change adds watchdog pretimeout notification handling to imx2_wdt
driver, if device data contains information about a valid interrupt.

It is unlikely but still possible (e.g. through a software limitation)
that only a subset of watchdogs on SoC has interrupt lines, hence
functionally the devices from these two groups have different
capabilities, and this is reflected in different watchdog_info
structs assigned to the devices.

Vladimir Zapolskiy 89873a711d watchdog: pretimeout: add pretimeout_available_governors attribute
The change adds an option to a user with CONFIG_WATCHDOG_SYSFS and
CONFIG_WATCHDOG_PRETIMEOUT_GOV enabled to get information about all
registered watchdog pretimeout governors by reading watchdog device
attribute named "pretimeout_available_governors".

Vladimir Zapolskiy 53f96cee1a watchdog: pretimeout: add option to select a pretimeout governor in runtime
The change converts watchdog device attribute "pretimeout_governor" from
read-only to read-write type to allow users to select a desirable
watchdog pretimeout governor in runtime, e.g.

  % echo -n panic > /sys/..../watchdog/watchdog0/pretimeout

To get this working a list of registered pretimeout governors is created
and a new helper function watchdog_pretimeout_governor_set() is exported
to watchdog_dev.c.

If a selected governor is gone, a watchdog device pretimeout notification
is delegated to a default built-in pretimeout governor.

Vladimir Zapolskiy da0d12ff2b watchdog: pretimeout: add panic pretimeout governor
The change adds panic watchdog pretimeout governor, on watchdog
pretimeout event the kernel shall panic. In general watchdog
pretimeout event means that something essentially bad is going on the
system, for example a process scheduler stalls or watchdog feeder is
killed due to OOM, so printing out information attendant to panic and
before likely unavoidable reboot caused by a watchdog may help to
determine a root cause of the issue.

Vladimir Zapolskiy f77710c4cd watchdog: pretimeout: add noop pretimeout governor
The change adds noop watchdog pretimeout governor, only an
informational message is printed to the kernel log buffer when a
watchdog triggers a pretimeout event.

While introducing the first pretimeout governor the selected design
assumes that the default pretimeout governor is selected by its name
and it is always built-in, thus the default pretimeout governor can
not be unregistered and the correspondent check can be removed from
the watchdog_unregister_governor() function.

Vladimir Zapolskiy ff84136cb6 watchdog: add watchdog pretimeout governor framework
The change adds a simple watchdog pretimeout framework infrastructure,
its purpose is to allow users to select a desired handling of watchdog
pretimeout events, which may be generated by some watchdog devices.

A user selects a default watchdog pretimeout governor during
compilation stage.

Watchdogs with WDIOF_PRETIMEOUT capability now have one more device
attribute in sysfs, pretimeout_governor attribute is intended to display
the selected watchdog pretimeout governor.

The framework has no impact at runtime on watchdog devices with no
WDIOF_PRETIMEOUT capability set.

Mika Westerberg 058dfc7670 ACPI / watchdog: Add support for WDAT hardware watchdog
Starting from Intel Skylake the iTCO watchdog timer registers were moved to
reside in the same register space with SMBus host controller. Not all
needed registers are available though and we need to unhide P2SB (Primary
to Sideband) device briefly to be able to read status of required NO_REBOOT
bit. The i2c-i801.c SMBus driver used to handle this and creation of the
iTCO watchdog platform device.

Windows, on the other hand, does not use the iTCO watchdog hardware
directly even if it is available. Instead it relies on ACPI Watchdog Action
Table (WDAT) table to describe the watchdog hardware to the OS. This table
contains necessary information about the the hardware and also set of
actions which are executed by a driver as needed.

This patch implements a new watchdog driver that takes advantage of the
ACPI WDAT table. We split the functionality into two parts: first part
enumerates the WDAT table and if found, populates resources and creates
platform device for the actual driver. The second part is the driver
itself.

The reason for the split is that this way we can make the driver itself to
be a module and loaded automatically if the WDAT table is found. Otherwise
the module is not loaded.

Guenter Roeck 3c10bbde10 watchdog: core: Clear WDOG_HW_RUNNING before calling the stop function
WDOG_HW_RUNNING indicates that the hardware watchdog is running while the
watchdog device is closed. The flag may be set by the driver when it is
instantiated to indicate that the watchdog is running, and that the
watchdog core needs to send heartbeat requests to the driver until the
watchdog device is opened.

When the watchdog device is closed, the flag can be used by the driver's
stop function to indicate to the watchdog core that it was unable to stop
the watchdog, and that the watchdog core needs to send heartbeat requests.
This only works if the flag is actually cleared when the watchdog is
stopped. To avoid having to clear the flag in each driver's stop function,
clear it in the watchdog core before calling the stop function.

driver using the watchdog core did not implement this function,
and the driver implementing it did not implement it correctly

at least some of the status information can be provided by the watchdog
core.

Provide the available status bits directly from the watchdog driver core.
Call the driver status function if it exists to get the boot status, but
always provide WDIOF_MAGICCLOSE and WDIOF_KEEPALIVEPING internally.

Rasmus Villemoes 3fbfe92647 watchdog: change watchdog_need_worker logic
If the driver indicates that the watchdog is running, the framework
should feed it until userspace opens the device, regardless of whether
the driver has set max_hw_heartbeat_ms.

This patch only affects the case where wdd->max_hw_heartbeat_ms is
zero, wdd->timeout is non-zero, the watchdog is not active and the
hardware device is running (*):

- If wdd->timeout is zero, watchdog_need_worker() returns false both
before and after this patch, and watchdog_next_keepalive() is not
called.

- If watchdog_active(wdd), the return value from watchdog_need_worker
is also the same as before (namely, hm && t > hm). Hence in that case,
watchdog_next_keepalive() is only called if hm == max_hw_heartbeat_ms
is non-zero, so the change to min_not_zero there is a no-op.

- If the watchdog is not active and the device is not running, we
return false from watchdog_need_worker just as before.

That leaves the watchdog_hw_running(wdd) && !watchdog_active(wdd) &&
wdd->timeout case. Again, it's easy to see that if
wdd->max_hw_heartbeat_ms is non-zero, we return true from
watchdog_need_worker with and without this patch, and the logic in
watchdog_next_keepalive is unchanged. Finally, if
wdd->max_hw_heartbeat_ms is 0, we used to end up in the
cancel_delayed_work branch, whereas with this patch we end up
scheduling a ping timeout_ms/2 from now.

(*) This should imply that no current kernel drivers are affected,
since the only drivers which explicitly set WDOG_HW_RUNNING are
imx2_wdt.c and dw_wdt.c, both of which also provide a non-zero value
for max_hw_heartbeat_ms. The watchdog core also sets WDOG_HW_RUNNING,
but only when the driver doesn't provide ->stop, in which case it
must, according to Documentation/watchdog/watchdog-kernel-api.txt, set
max_hw_heartbeat_ms.

Wolfram Sang e8cf96abba watchdog: softdog: use watchdog core to init timeout value
Error string and comment say we fall back to a default, but in reality
we bailed out. Refactor the code to use the core helper which then
matches the described behaviour. While updating the init message anyhow,
shorten it while we are here; no need for versioning there as well and
the name is already given via pr_fmt.

Lucas Stach 46856fabe4 watchdog: sp5100_tco: properly check for new register layouts
Commits 190aa4304d (Add AMD Mullins platform support) and
cca118fa2a (Add AMD Carrizo platform support) enabled the
driver on a lot more devices, but the following commit missed
a single location in the code when checking if the SB800 register
offsets should be used. This leads to the wrong register being
written which in turn causes ACPI to go haywire.

Fix this by introducing a helper function to check for the new
register layout and use this consistently.

if it needs to ping the watchdog or not.

Tim Harvey bc677ff42e watchdog: imx2_wdt: add external reset support via dt prop
The IMX6 watchdog supports assertion of a signal (WDOG_B) which
can be pinmux'd to an external pin. This is typically used for boards that
have PMIC's in control of the IMX6 power rails. In fact, failure to use
such an external reset on boards with external PMIC's can result in various
hangs due to the IMX6 not being fully reset [1] as well as the board failing
to reset because its PMIC has not been reset to provide adequate voltage for
the CPU when coming out of reset at 800Mhz.

This uses a new device-tree property 'fsl,ext-reset-output' to indicate the
board has such a reset and to cause the watchdog to be configured to assert
WDOG_B instead of an internal reset both on a watchdog timeout and in
system_restart.

Richard Cochran ebbf677a3f watchdog: octeon: Handle the FROZEN hot plug notifier actions.
When performing a suspend operation, the kernel brings all of the
non-boot CPUs offline, calling the hot plug notifiers with the flag,
CPU_TASKS_FROZEN, set in the action code. Similarly, during resume,
the CPUs are brought back online, but again the notifiers have the
FROZEN flag set.

While some very few drivers really need to treat suspend/resume
specially, this driver unintentionally ignores the notifications.

This patch changes the driver to disable the watchdog interrupt
whenever the CPU goes offline, and to enable it whenever the CPU goes
back online. As a result, the suspended state is no longer a special
case that leaves the watchdog active.

Hidehiro Kawai abc514c580 hpwdt: use nmi_panic() when kernel panics in NMI handler
Commit 1717f2096b ("panic, x86: Fix re-entrance problem due to panic

execution of panic(). It also saves registers for the crash dump on x86
by later commit 58c5661f21 ("panic, x86: Allow CPUs to save registers
even if looping in NMI context").

hpwdt driver can call panic() from NMI handler, so replace it with

Linus Torvalds 26660a4046 Merge branch 'core-objtool-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip
Pull 'objtool' stack frame validation from Ingo Molnar:
"This tree adds a new kernel build-time object file validation feature
(ONFIG_STACK_VALIDATION=y): kernel stack frame correctness validation.
It was written by and is maintained by Josh Poimboeuf.

The motivation: there's a category of hard to find kernel bugs, most
of them in assembly code (but also occasionally in C code), that
degrades the quality of kernel stack dumps/backtraces. These bugs are
hard to detect at the source code level. Such bugs result in
incorrect/incomplete backtraces most of time - but can also in some
rare cases result in crashes or other undefined behavior.

The build time correctness checking is done via the new 'objtool'
user-space utility that was written for this purpose and which is
hosted in the kernel repository in tools/objtool/. The tool's (very
simple) UI and source code design is shaped after Git and perf and
shares quite a bit of infrastructure with tools/perf (which tooling
infrastructure sharing effort got merged via perf and is already
upstream). Objtool follows the well-known kernel coding style.

Objtool does not try to check .c or .S files, it instead analyzes the
resulting .o generated machine code from first principles: it decodes
the instruction stream and interprets it. (Right now objtool supports
  the x86-64 architecture.)

  From tools/objtool/Documentation/stack-validation.txt:

"The kernel CONFIG_STACK_VALIDATION option enables a host tool named
objtool which runs at compile time. It has a "check" subcommand
which analyzes every .o file and ensures the validity of its stack
metadata. It enforces a set of rules on asm code and C inline
assembly code so that stack traces can be reliable.

Currently it only checks frame pointer usage, but there are plans to
add CFI validation for C files and CFI generation for asm files.

For each function, it recursively follows all possible code paths
and validates the correct frame pointer state at each instruction.

It also follows code paths involving special sections, like
.altinstructions, __jump_table, and __ex_table, which can add
alternative execution paths to a given instruction (or set of
instructions). Similarly, it knows how to follow switch statements,
for which gcc sometimes uses jump tables."

When this new kernel option is enabled (it's disabled by default), the
tool, if it finds any suspicious assembly code pattern, outputs
  warnings in compiler warning format:

warning: objtool: rtlwifi_rate_mapping()+0x2e7: frame pointer state mismatch
warning: objtool: cik_tiling_mode_table_init()+0x6ce: call without frame pointer save/setup
warning: objtool:__schedule()+0x3c0: duplicate frame pointer save
warning: objtool:__schedule()+0x3fd: sibling call from callable instruction with changed frame pointer

... so that scripts that pick up compiler warnings will notice them.
All known warnings triggered by the tool are fixed by the tree, most
of the commits in fact prepare the kernel to be warning-free. Most of
them are bugfixes or cleanups that stand on their own, but there are
also some annotations of 'special' stack frames for justified cases
such entries to JIT-ed code (BPF) or really special boot time code.

There are two other long-term motivations behind this tool as well:

   - To improve the quality and reliability of kernel stack frames, so
that they can be used for optimized live patching.

   - To create independent infrastructure to check the correctness of
CFI stack frames at build time. CFI debuginfo is notoriously
unreliable and we cannot use it in the kernel as-is without extra
checking done both on the kernel side and on the build side.

The quality of kernel stack frames matters to debuggability as well,
so IMO we can merge this without having to consider the live patching
  or CFI debuginfo angle"

Javier Martinez Canillas 882dec1ff1 watchdog: s3c2410_wdt: Add max and min timeout values
The watchdog maximum timeout value is determined by the number of bits
for the interval timer counter, its source clock frequency, the number
of bits of the prescaler and maximum divider value.

This can be calculated with the following equation:

max_timeout = counter / (freq / (max_prescale + 1) / max_divider)

Setting a maximum timeout value will allow the watchdog core to refuse
user-space calls to the WDIOC_SETTIMEOUT ioctl that sets not supported
timeout values.

For example, systemd tries to set a timeout of 10 minutes on reboot to
ensure that the machine will be rebooted even if a reboot failed. This
leads to the following error message on an Exynos5422 Odroid XU4 board:

Fu Wei 57d2caaabf Watchdog: introduce ARM SBSA watchdog driver
According to Server Base System Architecture (SBSA) specification,
the SBSA Generic Watchdog has two stage timeouts: the first signal (WS0)
is for alerting the system by interrupt, the second one (WS1) is a real
hardware reset.
More details about the hardware specification of this device:
ARM DEN0029B - Server Base System Architecture (SBSA)

This driver can operate ARM SBSA Generic Watchdog as a single stage watchdog
or a two stages watchdog, it's set up by the module parameter "action".
In the single stage mode, when the timeout is reached, your system
will be reset by WS1. The first signal (WS0) is ignored.
In the two stages mode, when the timeout is reached, the first signal (WS0)
will trigger panic. If the system is getting into trouble and cannot be reset
by panic or restart properly by the kdump kernel(if supported), then the
second stage (as long as the first stage) will be reached, system will be
reset by WS1. This function can help administrator to backup the system
context info by panic console output or kdump.

This driver bases on linux kernel watchdog framework, so it can get
timeout from module parameter and FDT at the driver init stage.

William Breathitt Gray c36a483d80 watchdog: Add watchdog timer support for the WinSystems EBC-C384
The WinSystems EBC-C384 has an onboard watchdog timer. The timeout range
supported by the watchdog timer is 1 second to 255 minutes. Timeouts
under 256 seconds have a 1 second granularity, while the rest have a 1
minute granularity.

This driver adds watchdog timer support for this onboard watchdog timer.

If the watchdog functionality is not activated then the watchdog interface

The feature can be deactivated also without reboot
in that case the watchdog device should be unregistered at runtime.

The information regarding the deactivation is reported
in the ping response command. In runtime case the unregistration
has to be run from a worker so that the ping initiated by the watchdog
core completes. Otherwise the flow will deadlock on watchdog

Sandeep Tripathy 55e071779c watchdog: sp805: ping fails to abort wdt reset
sp805 wdt asserts interrupt for the first expiry and
reloads the counter. If wdt interrupt is set and count
reaches zero then wdt reset event is generated. To get
wdt reset at 't' timeout the driver loads wdt counter
with 't/2'. A ping before time 't' *should* prevent
wdt reset. Currently if ping is done after 't/2' then
wdt interrupt condition gets set. On the next countdown
of loadval wdt reset event occurs eventhough wdt was
reloaded before the set timeout 't'.

This patch clears the interrupt condition on ping.

Guenter Roeck b4ffb19098 watchdog: Separate and maintain variables based on variable lifetime
All variables required by the watchdog core to manage a watchdog are
currently stored in struct watchdog_device. The lifetime of those
variables is determined by the watchdog driver. However, the lifetime
of variables used by the watchdog core differs from the lifetime of
struct watchdog_device. To remedy this situation, watchdog drivers
can implement ref and unref callbacks, to be used by the watchdog
core to lock struct watchdog_device in memory.

While this solves the immediate problem, it depends on watchdog drivers
to actually implement the ref/unref callbacks. This is error prone,
often not implemented in the first place, or not implemented correctly.

To solve the problem without requiring driver support, split the variables
in struct watchdog_device into two data structures - one for variables
associated with the watchdog driver, one for variables associated with
the watchdog core. With this approach, the watchdog core can keep track
of its variable lifetime and no longer depends on ref/unref callbacks
in the driver. As a side effect, some of the variables originally in
struct watchdog_driver are now private to the watchdog core and no longer
visible in watchdog drivers.

As a side effect of the changes made, an ioctl will now always fail
with -ENODEV after a watchdog device was unregistered with the character
device still open. Previously, it would only fail with -ENODEV in some
situations. Also, ioctl operations are now atomic from driver perspective.
With this change, it is now guaranteed that the driver will not unregister
a watchdog between a timeout change and the subsequent ping.

The 'ref' and 'unref' callbacks in struct watchdog_driver are no longer
used and marked as deprecated.

Guenter Roeck e7d162faa6 watchdog: diag288: Stop re-using watchdog core internal flags
A watchdog driver should not use watchdog subsystem internal flags.
Use a driver variable and flag instead to maintain the watchdog state
and to determine if a suspend operation is possible or not.

Guenter Roeck 32ecc63926 watchdog: Create watchdog device in watchdog_dev.c
The watchdog character device is currently created in watchdog_dev.c,
and the watchdog device in watchdog_core.c. This results in
cross-dependencies, since device creation needs to know the watchdog
character device number as well as the watchdog class, both of which
reside in watchdog_dev.c.

Create the watchdog device in watchdog_dev.c to simplify the code.

Inspired by earlier patch set from Damien Riegel.

Guenter Roeck 0933b453f1 watchdog: qcom-wdt: Do not set 'dev' in struct watchdog_device
The 'dev' pointer in struct watchdog_device is set by the watchdog core
when registering the watchdog device and not by the driver. It points to
the watchdog device, not its parent.
