Let packets move from one netns to the other at PPP encapsulation and
decapsulation time.
PPP units and channels remain in the netns in which they were
originally created. Only the net_device may move to a different
namespace. Cross netns handling is thus transparent to lower PPP
layers (PPPoE, L2TP, etc.).
PPP devices are automatically unregistered when their netns gets
removed. So read() and poll() on the unit file descriptor will
respectively receive EOF and POLLHUP. Channels aren't affected.

PPP devices may get automatically unregistered when their network
namespace is getting removed. This happens if the ppp control plane
daemon (e.g. pppd) exits while it is the last user of this namespace.
This leads to several races:
* ppp_exit_net() may destroy the per namespace idr (pn->units_idr)
before all file descriptors were released. Successive ppp_release()
calls may then cleanup PPP devices with ppp_shutdown_interface() and
try to use the already destroyed idr.
* Automatic device unregistration may also happen before the
ppp_release() call for that device gets executed. Once called on
the file owning the device, ppp_release() will then clean it up and
try to unregister it a second time.
To fix these issues, operations defined in ppp_shutdown_interface() are
moved to the PPP device's ndo_uninit() callback. This allows PPP
devices to be properly cleaned up by unregister_netdev() and friends.
So checking for ppp->owner is now an accurate test to decide if a PPP
device should be unregistered.
Setting ppp->owner is done in ppp_create_interface(), before device
registration, in order to avoid unprotected modification of this field.
Finally, ppp_exit_net() now starts by unregistering all remaining PPP
devices to ensure that none will get unregistered after the call to
idr_destroy().

Four minor merge conflicts:
1) qca_spi.c renamed the local variable used for the SPI device
from spi_device to spi, meanwhile the spi_set_drvdata() call
got moved further up in the probe function.
2) Two changes were both adding new members to codel params
structure, and thus we had overlapping changes to the
initializer function.
3) 'net' was making a fix to sk_release_kernel() which is
completely removed in 'net-next'.
4) In net_namespace.c, the rtnl_net_fill() call for GET operations
had the command value fixed, meanwhile 'net-next' adjusted the
argument signature a bit.
This also matches example merge resolutions posted by Stephen
Rothwell over the past two days.

When PPP is used over a link which does not guarantee packet ordering,
we might get late MPPE packets. This is a problem because MPPE must be
kept synchronized and the current implementation does not drop them and
rekey 4095 times instead of 0, which is wrong.

When a PADT frame is received, the socket may not be in a good state to
close down the PPP interface. The current implementation handles this by
simply blocking all further PPP traffic, and hoping that the lack of traffic
will trigger the user to investigate.
Use schedule_work to get to a process context from which we clear down the
PPP interface, in a fashion analogous to hangup on a TTY-based PPP
interface. This causes pppd to disconnect immediately, and allows tools to
take immediate corrective action.
Note that pppd's rp_pppoe.so plugin has code in it to disable the session
when it disconnects; however, as a consequence of this patch, the session is
already disabled before rp_pppoe.so is asked to disable the session. The
result is a harmless error message:
Failed to disconnect PPPoE socket: 114 Operation already in progress
This message is safe to ignore, as long as the error is 114 Operation
already in progress; in that specific case, it means that the PPPoE session
has already been disabled before pppd tried to disable it.

we used to check for "nobody else could start doing anything with

Testing xmit_more support with netperf and connected UDP sockets,
I found strange dst refcount false sharing.
Current handling of IFF_XMIT_DST_RELEASE is not optimal.
Dropping dst in validate_xmit_skb() is certainly too late in case
packet was queued by cpu X but dequeued by cpu Y
The logical point to take care of drop/force is in __dev_queue_xmit()
before even taking qdisc lock.
As Julian Anastasov pointed out, need for skb_dst() might come from some
packet schedulers or classifiers.
This patch adds new helper to cleanly express needs of various drivers
or qdiscs/classifiers.
Drivers that need skb_dst() in their ndo_start_xmit() should call
following helper in their setup instead of the prior :
dev->priv_flags &= ~IFF_XMIT_DST_RELEASE;
->
netif_keep_dst(dev);
Instead of using a single bit, we use two bits, one being
eventually rebuilt in bonding/team drivers.
The other one, is permanent and blocks IFF_XMIT_DST_RELEASE being
rebuilt in bonding/team. Eventually, we could add something
smarter later.

Commit 568f194e8b ("net: ppp: use
sk_unattached_filter api") inadvertently changed the logic when setting
PPP pass and active filters. This applies to both the generic PPP subsystem
implemented by drivers/net/ppp/ppp_generic.c and the ISDN PPP subsystem
implemented by drivers/isdn/i4l/isdn_ppp.c. The original code in ppp_ioctl()
(or isdn_ppp_ioctl(), resp.) handling PPPIOCSPASS and PPPIOCSACTIVE allowed to
remove a pass/active filter previously set by using a filter of length zero.
However, with the new code this is not possible anymore as this case is not
explicitly checked for, which leads to passing NULL as a filter to
sk_unattached_filter_create(). This results in returning EINVAL to the caller.
Additionally, the variables ppp->pass_filter and ppp->active_filter (or
is->pass_filter and is->active_filter, resp.) are not reset to NULL, although
the filters they point to may have been destroyed by
sk_unattached_filter_destroy(), so in this EINVAL case dangling pointers are
left behind (provided the pointers were previously non-NULL).
This patch corrects both problems by checking whether the filter passed is
empty or non-empty, and prevents sk_unattached_filter_create() from being
called in the first case. Moreover, the pointers are always reset to NULL
as soon as sk_unattached_filter_destroy() returns.

Commit 568f194e8b ("net: ppp: use
sk_unattached_filter api") causes sk_chk_filter() to be called twice when
setting a PPP pass or active filter. This applies to both the generic PPP
subsystem implemented by drivers/net/ppp/ppp_generic.c and the ISDN PPP
subsystem implemented by drivers/isdn/i4l/isdn_ppp.c. The first call is from
within get_filter(). The second one is through the call chain
ppp_ioctl() or isdn_ppp_ioctl()
--> sk_unattached_filter_create()
--> __sk_prepare_filter()
--> sk_chk_filter()
The first call from within get_filter() should be deleted as get_filter() is
called just before calling sk_unattached_filter_create() later on, which
eventually calls sk_chk_filter() anyway.
For 3.15.x, this proposed change is a bugfix rather than a pure optimization as
in that branch, sk_chk_filter() may replace filter codes by other codes which
are not recognized when executing sk_chk_filter() a second time. So with
3.15.x, if sk_chk_filter() is called twice, the second invocation may yield
EINVAL (this depends on the filter codes found in the filter to be set, but
because the replacement is done for frequently used codes, this is almost
always the case). The net effect is that setting pass and/or active PPP filters
does not work anymore, since sk_unattached_filter_create() always returns
EINVAL due to the second call to sk_chk_filter(), regardless whether the filter
was originally sane or not.

The PPP channel MTU is used with Multilink PPP when ppp_mp_explode() (see
ppp_generic module) tries to determine how big a fragment might be. According
to RFC 1661, the MTU excludes the 2-byte PPP protocol field, see the
corresponding comment and code in ppp_mp_explode():
/*
* hdrlen includes the 2-byte PPP protocol field, but the
* MTU counts only the payload excluding the protocol field.
* (RFC1661 Section 2)
*/
mtu = pch->chan->mtu - (hdrlen - 2);
However, the pppoe module *does* include the PPP protocol field in the channel
MTU, which is wrong as it causes the PPP payload to be 1-2 bytes too big under
certain circumstances (one byte if PPP protocol compression is used, two
otherwise), causing the generated Ethernet packets to be dropped. So the pppoe
module has to subtract two bytes from the channel MTU. This error only
manifests itself when using Multilink PPP, as otherwise the channel MTU is not
used anywhere.
In the following, I will describe how to reproduce this bug. We configure two
pppd instances for multilink PPP over two PPPoE links, say eth2 and eth3, with
a MTU of 1492 bytes for each link and a MRRU of 2976 bytes. (This MRRU is
computed by adding the two link MTUs and subtracting the MP header twice, which
is 4 bytes long.) The necessary pppd statements on both sides are "multilink
mtu 1492 mru 1492 mrru 2976". On the client side, we additionally need "plugin
rp-pppoe.so eth2" and "plugin rp-pppoe.so eth3", respectively; on the server
side, we additionally need to start two pppoe-server instances to be able to
establish two PPPoE sessions, one over eth2 and one over eth3. We set the MTU
of the PPP network interface to the MRRU (2976) on both sides of the connection
in order to make use of the higher bandwidth. (If we didn't do that, IP
fragmentation would kick in, which we want to avoid.)
Now we send a ICMPv4 echo request with a payload of 2948 bytes from client to
server over the PPP link. This results in the following network packet:
2948 (echo payload)
+ 8 (ICMPv4 header)
+ 20 (IPv4 header)
---------------------
2976 (PPP payload)
These 2976 bytes do not exceed the MTU of the PPP network interface, so the
IP packet is not fragmented. Now the multilink PPP code in ppp_mp_explode()
prepends one protocol byte (0x21 for IPv4), making the packet one byte bigger
than the negotiated MRRU. So this packet would have to be divided in three
fragments. But this does not happen as each link MTU is assumed to be two bytes
larger. So this packet is diveded into two fragments only, one of size 1489 and
one of size 1488. Now we have for that bigger fragment:
1489 (PPP payload)
+ 4 (MP header)
+ 2 (PPP protocol field for the MP payload (0x3d))
+ 6 (PPPoE header)
--------------------------
1501 (Ethernet payload)
This packet exceeds the link MTU and is discarded.
If one configures the link MTU on the client side to 1501, one can see the
discarded Ethernet frames with tcpdump running on the client. A
ping -s 2948 -c 1 192.168.15.254
leads to the smaller fragment that is correctly received on the server side:
(tcpdump -vvvne -i eth3 pppoes and ppp proto 0x3d)
52:54:00:ad:87:fd > 52:54:00:79:5c:d0, ethertype PPPoE S (0x8864),
length 1514: PPPoE [ses 0x3] MLPPP (0x003d), length 1494: seq 0x000,
Flags [end], length 1492
and to the bigger fragment that is not received on the server side:
(tcpdump -vvvne -i eth2 pppoes and ppp proto 0x3d)
52:54:00:70:9e:89 > 52:54:00:5d:6f:b0, ethertype PPPoE S (0x8864),
length 1515: PPPoE [ses 0x5] MLPPP (0x003d), length 1495: seq 0x000,
Flags [begin], length 1493
With the patch below, we correctly obtain three fragments:
52:54:00:ad:87:fd > 52:54:00:79:5c:d0, ethertype PPPoE S (0x8864),
length 1514: PPPoE [ses 0x1] MLPPP (0x003d), length 1494: seq 0x000,
Flags [begin], length 1492
52:54:00:70:9e:89 > 52:54:00:5d:6f:b0, ethertype PPPoE S (0x8864),
length 1514: PPPoE [ses 0x1] MLPPP (0x003d), length 1494: seq 0x000,
Flags [none], length 1492
52:54:00:ad:87:fd > 52:54:00:79:5c:d0, ethertype PPPoE S (0x8864),
length 27: PPPoE [ses 0x1] MLPPP (0x003d), length 7: seq 0x000,

And the ICMPv4 echo request is successfully received at the server side:

length 2976)
192.168.222.2 > 192.168.15.254: ICMP echo request, id 30530, seq 0,

Ideally, we would need to generate IP ID using a per destination IP
generator.
linux kernels used inet_peer cache for this purpose, but this had a huge
cost on servers disabling MTU discovery.
1) each inet_peer struct consumes 192 bytes
2) inetpeer cache uses a binary tree of inet_peer structs,
with a nominal size of ~66000 elements under load.
3) lookups in this tree are hitting a lot of cache lines, as tree depth
is about 20.
4) If server deals with many tcp flows, we have a high probability of
not finding the inet_peer, allocating a fresh one, inserting it in
the tree with same initial ip_id_count, (cf secure_ip_id())
5) We garbage collect inet_peer aggressively.
IP ID generation do not have to be 'perfect'
Goal is trying to avoid duplicates in a short period of time,
so that reassembly units have a chance to complete reassembly of
fragments belonging to one message before receiving other fragments
with a recycled ID.
We simply use an array of generators, and a Jenkin hash using the dst IP
as a key.
ipv6_select_ident() is put back into net/ipv6/ip6_output.c where it

The sk_unattached_filter_create() API is used by BPF filters that
are not directly attached or related to sockets, and are used in
team, ptp, xt_bpf, cls_bpf, etc. As such all users do their own
internal managment of obtaining filter blocks and thus already
have them in kernel memory and set up before calling into
sk_unattached_filter_create(). As a result, due to __user annotation
in sock_fprog, sparse triggers false positives (incorrect type in
assignment [different address space]) when filters are set up before
passing them to sk_unattached_filter_create(). Therefore, let
sk_unattached_filter_create() API use sock_fprog_kern to overcome
this issue.

For the ppp driver, there are currently two open-coded BPF filters in use,
that is, pass_filter and active_filter. Migrate both to make proper use
of sk_unattached_filter_{create,destroy} API so that the actual BPF code
is decoupled from direct access, and filters can be jited as a side-effect
by the internal filter compiler.

This patch now always passes msg->msg_namelen as 0. recvmsg handlers must
set msg_namelen to the proper size <= sizeof(struct sockaddr_storage)
to return msg_name to the user.
This prevents numerous uninitialized memory leaks we had in the
recvmsg handlers and makes it harder for new code to accidentally leak
uninitialized memory.
Optimize for the case recvfrom is called with NULL as address. We don't
need to copy the address at all, so set it to NULL before invoking the
recvmsg handler. We can do so, because all the recvmsg handlers must
cope with the case a plain read() is called on them. read() also sets
msg_name to NULL.
Also document these changes in include/linux/net.h as suggested by David
Miller.
Changes since RFC:
Set msg->msg_name = NULL if user specified a NULL in msg_name but had a
non-null msg_namelen in verify_iovec/verify_compat_iovec. This doesn't
affect sendto as it would bail out earlier while trying to copy-in the
address. It also more naturally reflects the logic by the callers of
verify_iovec.
With this change in place I could remove "
if (!uaddr || msg_sys->msg_namelen == 0)
msg->msg_name = NULL
".
This change does not alter the user visible error logic as we ignore
msg_namelen as long as msg_name is NULL.
Also remove two unnecessary curly brackets in ___sys_recvmsg and change
comments to netdev style.

If local fragmentation is allowed, then ip_select_ident() and
ip_select_ident_more() need to generate unique IDs to ensure
correct defragmentation on the peer.
For example, if IPsec (tunnel mode) has to encrypt large skbs
that have local_df bit set, then all IP fragments that belonged
to different ESP datagrams would have used the same identificator.
If one of these IP fragments would get lost or reordered, then
peer could possibly stitch together wrong IP fragments that did
not belong to the same datagram. This would lead to a packet loss
or data corruption.

Pptp driver has lots of byte order warnings from sparse.
This was because the on-the-wire header is in network byte order (obviously)
but the definition did not reflect that.
Also, the address structure to user space actually put the call id
in host order. Rather than break ABI compatibility, just acknowledge
the existing design.

tty_perform_flush() can deadlock when called while holding
a line discipline reference. By definition, all ldisc drivers
hold a ldisc reference, so calls originating from ldisc drivers
must not block for a ldisc reference.
The deadlock can occur when:
CPU 0 | CPU 1
|
tty_ldisc_ref(tty) |
.... | <line discipline halted>
tty_ldisc_ref_wait(tty) |
|
CPU 0 cannot progess because it cannot obtain an ldisc reference
with the line discipline has been halted (thus no new references
are granted).
CPU 1 cannot progress because an outstanding ldisc reference
has not been released.
An in-tree call-tree audit of tty_perform_flush() [1] shows 5
ldisc drivers calling tty_perform_flush() indirectly via
n_tty_ioctl_helper() and 2 ldisc drivers calling directly.
A single tty driver safely uses the function.
[1]
Recursive usage:
/* These functions are line discipline ioctls and thus
* recursive wrt line discipline references */
tty_perform_flush() - ./drivers/tty/tty_ioctl.c
n_tty_ioctl_helper()
hci_uart_tty_ioctl(default) - drivers/bluetooth/hci_ldisc.c (N_HCI)
n_hdlc_tty_ioctl(default) - drivers/tty/n_hdlc.c (N_HDLC)
gsmld_ioctl(default) - drivers/tty/n_gsm.c (N_GSM0710)
n_tty_ioctl(default) - drivers/tty/n_tty.c (N_TTY)
gigaset_tty_ioctl(default) - drivers/isdn/gigaset/ser-gigaset.c (N_GIGASET_M101)
ppp_synctty_ioctl(TCFLSH) - drivers/net/ppp/pps_synctty.c
ppp_asynctty_ioctl(TCFLSH) - drivers/net/ppp/ppp_async.c
Non-recursive use:
tty_perform_flush() - drivers/tty/tty_ioctl.c
ipw_ioctl(TCFLSH) - drivers/tty/ipwireless/tty.c

* is invoked by tty_ioctl() */

- remove CONFIG_EXPERIMENTAL
