Prarit Bhargava ce14c58313 Documentation, add kernel-parameters.txt entry for dis_ucode_ldr
dis_ucode_ldr was introduced in 65cef13 ("x86, microcode: Add a disable
chicken bit") and will disable microcode loading on x86.  This kernel
parameter is buried in the code and should be added to the Documentation.

Juergen Gross c70727a5bc xen: allow more than 512 GB of RAM for 64 bit pv-domains
64 bit pv-domains under Xen are limited to 512 GB of RAM today. The
main reason has been the 3 level p2m tree, which was replaced by the
virtual mapped linear p2m list. Parallel to the p2m list which is
being used by the kernel itself there is a 3 level mfn tree for usage
by the Xen tools and eventually for crash dump analysis. For this tree
the linear p2m list can serve as a replacement, too. As the kernel
can't know whether the tools are capable of dealing with the p2m list
instead of the mfn tree, the limit of 512 GB can't be dropped in all
cases.

This patch replaces the hard limit by a kernel parameter which tells
the kernel to obey the 512 GB limit or not. The default is selected by
a configuration parameter which specifies whether the 512 GB limit
should be active per default for domUs (domain save/restore/migration
and crash dump analysis are affected).

Memory above the domain limit is returned to the hypervisor instead of
being identity mapped, which was wrong anyway.

The kernel configuration parameter to specify the maximum size of a
domain can be deleted, as it is not relevant any more.

Stephen Chandler Paul e1443d2849 Input: i8042 - add unmask_kbd_data option
A big problem with the current i8042 debugging option is that it outputs
data going to and from the keyboard by default. As a result, many dmesg
logs uploaded by users will unintentionally contain sensitive information
such as their password, as such it's probably a good idea not to output
data coming from the keyboard unless specifically enabled by the user.

Rafael J. Wysocki 18d78b64fd ACPI / init: Make it possible to override _REV
The platform firmware on some systems expects Linux to return "5" as
the supported ACPI revision which makes it expose system configuration
information in a special way.

For example, based on what ACPI exports as the supported revision,
Dell XPS 13 (2015) configures its audio device to either work in HDA
mode or in I2S mode, where the former is supposed to be used on Linux
until the latter is fully supported (in the kernel as well as in user
space).

Since ACPI 6 mandates that _REV should return "2" if ACPI 2 or later
is supported by the OS, a subsequent change will make that happen, so
make it possible to override that on systems where "5" is expected to
be returned for Linux to work correctly one them (such as the Dell
machine mentioned above).

Mimi Zohar 24fd03c876 ima: update builtin policies
This patch defines a builtin measurement policy "tcb", similar to the
existing "ima_tcb", but with additional rules to also measure files
based on the effective uid and to measure files opened with the "read"
mode bit set (eg. read, read-write).

Changing the builtin "ima_tcb" policy could potentially break existing
users.  Instead of defining a new separate boot command line option each
time the builtin measurement policy is modified, this patch defines a
single generic boot command line option "ima_policy=" to specify the
builtin policy and deprecates the use of the builtin ima_tcb policy.

[The "ima_policy=" boot command line option is based on Roberto Sassu's
"ima: added new policy type exec" patch.]

  never going to be seen on production hardware.  I'm glad I checked
  that before the 4.1 release...

  Firstly, PASID support is so broken on existing chips that we're just
  going to declare the old capability bit 28 as 'reserved' and change
  the VT-d spec to move PASID support to another bit.  So any existing
  hardware doesn't support SVM; it only sets that (now) meaningless bit
  28.

  That patch *wasn't* imperative for 4.1 because we don't have PASID
  support yet.  But *even* the extended context tables are broken — if
  you just enable the wider tables and use none of the new bits in them,
  which is precisely what 4.1 does, you find that translations don't
  work.  It's this problem which I thought was caught in time to be
  fixed before production, but wasn't.

  To avoid triggering this issue, we now *only* enable the extended
  context tables on hardware which also advertises "we have PASID
  support and we actually tested it this time" with the new PASID
  feature bit.

  In addition, I've added an 'intel_iommu=ecs_off' command line
  parameter to allow us to disable it manually if we need to"

David Woodhouse c83b2f20fd iommu/vt-d: Only enable extended context tables if PASID is supported
Although the extended tables are theoretically a completely orthogonal
feature to PASID and anything else that *uses* the newly-available bits,
some of the early hardware has problems even when all we do is enable
them and use only the same bits that were in the old context tables.

For now, there's no motivation to support extended tables unless we're
going to use PASID support to do SVM. So just don't use them unless
PASID support is advertised too. Also add a command-line bailout just in
case later chips also have issues.

The equivalent problem for PASID support has already been fixed with the
upcoming VT-d spec update and commit bd00c606a ("iommu/vt-d: Change
PASID support to bit 40 of Extended Capability Register"), because the
problematic platforms use the old definition of the PASID-capable bit,
which is now marked as reserved and meaningless.

So with this change, we'll magically start using ECS again only when we
see the new hardware advertising "hey, we have PASID support and we
actually tested it this time" on bit 40.

The VT-d hardware architect has promised that we are not going to have
any reason to support ECS *without* PASID any time soon, and he'll make
sure he checks with us before changing that.

In the future, if hypothetical new features also use new bits in the
context tables and can be seen on implementations *without* PASID support,
we might need to add their feature bits to the ecs_enabled() macro.

Dave Hansen 8c3641e957 x86/mpx: Introduce a boot-time disable flag
MPX has the _potential_ to cause some issues.  Say part of your
init system tried to protect one of its components from buffer
overflows with MPX.  If there were a false positive, it's
possible that MPX could keep a system from booting.

MPX could also potentially cause performance issues since it is
present in hot paths like the unmap path.

Allow it to be disabled at boot time.

Paul E. McKenney 3838cc1850 rcutorture: Allow negative values of nreaders to oversubscribe
By default, with rcutorture.nreaders equal to -1, rcutorture provisions
N-1 reader kthreads, where N is the number of CPUs.  This avoids
rcutorture-induced stalls, but also avoids heavier levels of torture.
This commit therefore allows negative values of rcutorture.nreaders
to specify larger numbers of reader kthreads, so that for example
rcutorture.nreaders=-2 provisions N kthreads and rcutorture.nreaders=-5
provisions N+3 kthreads.

Paul E. McKenney 7fa270010e rcu: Convert CONFIG_RCU_FANOUT_EXACT to boot parameter
The CONFIG_RCU_FANOUT_EXACT Kconfig parameter is used primarily (and
perhaps only) by rcutorture to verify that RCU works correctly in specific
rcu_node combining-tree configurations.  It therefore does not make
much sense have this as a question to people attempting to configure
their kernels.  So this commit creates an rcutree.rcu_fanout_exact=
boot parameter that rcutorture can use, and eliminates the original
CONFIG_RCU_FANOUT_EXACT Kconfig parameter.

Paul E. McKenney 0f41c0ddad rcu: Provide diagnostic option to slow down grace-period scans
Grace-period scans of the rcu_node combining tree normally
proceed quite quickly, so that it is very difficult to reproduce
races against them.  This commit therefore allows grace-period
pre-initialization and cleanup to be artificially slowed down,
increasing race-reproduction probability.  A pair of pairs of new
Kconfig parameters are provided, RCU_TORTURE_TEST_SLOW_PREINIT to
enable the slowing down of propagating CPU-hotplug changes up the
combining tree along with RCU_TORTURE_TEST_SLOW_PREINIT_DELAY to
specify the delay in jiffies, and RCU_TORTURE_TEST_SLOW_CLEANUP
to enable the slowing down of the end-of-grace-period cleanup scan
along with RCU_TORTURE_TEST_SLOW_CLEANUP_DELAY to specify the delay
in jiffies.  Boot-time parameters named rcutree.gp_preinit_delay and
rcutree.gp_cleanup_delay allow these delays to be specified at boot time.

Luis R. Rodriguez f2411da746 driver-core: add driver module asynchronous probe support
Some init systems may wish to express the desire to have device drivers
run their probe() code asynchronously. This implements support for this
and allows userspace to request async probe as a preference through a
generic shared device driver module parameter, async_probe.

Implementation for async probe is supported through a module parameter
given that since synchronous probe has been prevalent for years some
userspace might exist which relies on the fact that the device driver
will probe synchronously and the assumption that devices it provides
will be immediately available after this.

Hans de Goede ee136af4a0 uas: Add US_FL_MAX_SECTORS_240 flag
The usb-storage driver sets max_sectors = 240 in its scsi-host template,
for uas we do not want to do that for all devices, but testing has shown
that some devices need it.

This commit adds a US_FL_MAX_SECTORS_240 flag for such devices, and
implements support for it in uas.c, while at it it also adds support
for US_FL_MAX_SECTORS_64 to uas.c.

 reason, but Peter is working on fixing that.  If not, I'll send a revert
 for the offending patch, but I have faith that Peter can address it.
 
 Other than the console work here, there's the usual serial driver
 updates and changes, and a buch of 8250 reworks to try to make that
 driver easier to maintain over time, and have it support more devices in
 the future.

  also shadow and double buffer pmem contents, etc.

Toshi Kani 0ddab1d2ed lib/ioremap.c: add huge I/O map capability interfaces
Add ioremap_pud_enabled() and ioremap_pmd_enabled(), which return 1 when
I/O mappings with pud/pmd are enabled on the kernel.

ioremap_huge_init() calls arch_ioremap_pud_supported() and
arch_ioremap_pmd_supported() to initialize the capabilities at boot-time.

A new kernel option "nohugeiomap" is also added, so that user can disable
the huge I/O map capabilities when necessary.

Ulrich Obergfell 195daf665a watchdog: enable the new user interface of the watchdog mechanism
With the current user interface of the watchdog mechanism it is only
possible to disable or enable both lockup detectors at the same time.
This series introduces new kernel parameters and changes the semantics of
some existing kernel parameters, so that the hard lockup detector and the
soft lockup detector can be disabled or enabled individually.  With this
series applied, the user interface is as follows.

- parameters in /proc/sys/kernel

  . soft_watchdog
    This is a new parameter to control and examine the run state of
    the soft lockup detector.

  . nmi_watchdog
    The semantics of this parameter have changed. It can now be used
    to control and examine the run state of the hard lockup detector.

  . watchdog
    This parameter is still available to control the run state of both
    lockup detectors at the same time. If this parameter is examined,
    it shows the logical OR of soft_watchdog and nmi_watchdog.

  . watchdog_thresh
    The semantics of this parameter are not affected by the patch.

- kernel command line parameters

  . nosoftlockup
    The semantics of this parameter have changed. It can now be used
    to disable the soft lockup detector at boot time.

  . nmi_watchdog=0 or nmi_watchdog=1
    Disable or enable the hard lockup detector at boot time. The patch
    introduces '=1' as a new option.

  . nowatchdog
    The semantics of this parameter are not affected by the patch. It
    is still available to disable both lockup detectors at boot time.

Also, remove the proc_dowatchdog() function which is no longer needed.

Christoph Hellwig ec776ef6bb x86/mm: Add support for the non-standard protected e820 type
Various recent BIOSes support NVDIMMs or ADR using a
non-standard e820 memory type, and Intel supplied reference
Linux code using this type to various vendors.

Wire this e820 table type up to export platform devices for the

This implements the following policy to decide whether ACPI should
be used to boot the system:
- acpi=off: ACPI will not be used to boot the system, even if there is
  no alternative available (e.g., device tree is empty)
- acpi=force: only ACPI will be used to boot the system; if that fails,
  there will be no fallback to alternative methods (such as device tree)
- otherwise, ACPI will be used as a fallback if the device tree turns out
  to lack a platform description; the heuristic to decide this is whether
  /chosen is the only node present at depth 1

Paul E. McKenney 37745d2810 rcu: Provide diagnostic option to slow down grace-period initialization
Grace-period initialization normally proceeds quite quickly, so
that it is very difficult to reproduce races against grace-period
initialization.  This commit therefore allows grace-period
initialization to be artificially slowed down, increasing
race-reproduction probability.  A pair of new Kconfig parameters are
provided, CONFIG_RCU_TORTURE_TEST_SLOW_INIT to enable the slowdowns, and
CONFIG_RCU_TORTURE_TEST_SLOW_INIT_DELAY to specify the number of jiffies
of slowdown to apply.  A boot-time parameter named rcutree.gp_init_delay
allows boot-time delay to be specified.  By default, no delay will be
applied even if CONFIG_RCU_TORTURE_TEST_SLOW_INIT is set.

Brian Norris 1d4a9c17d4 PM / sleep: add configurable delay for pm_test
When CONFIG_PM_DEBUG=y, we provide a sysfs file (/sys/power/pm_test) for
selecting one of a few suspend test modes, where rather than entering a
full suspend state, the kernel will perform some subset of suspend
steps, wait 5 seconds, and then resume back to normal operation.

This mode is useful for (among other things) observing the state of the
system just before entering a sleep mode, for debugging or analysis
purposes. However, a constant 5 second wait is not sufficient for some
sorts of analysis; for example, on an SoC, one might want to use
external tools to probe the power states of various on-chip controllers
or clocks.

This patch turns this 5 second delay into a configurable module
parameter, so users can determine how long to wait in this
pseudo-suspend state before resuming the system.

Thadeu Lima de Souza Cascardo 4e28784024 powernv/iommu: disable IOMMU bypass with param iommu=nobypass
When IOMMU bypass is enabled, a PCI device can read and write memory
that was not mapped by the driver without causing an EEH. That might
cause memory corruption, for example.

When we disable bypass, DMA reads and writes to addresses not mapped by
the IOMMU will cause an EEH, allowing us to debug such issues.

Srihari Vijayaraghavan 148e9a711e Input: i8042 - reset keyboard to fix Elantech touchpad detection
On some laptops, keyboard needs to be reset in order to successfully detect
touchpad (e.g., some Gigabyte laptop models with Elantech touchpads).
Without resettin keyboard touchpad pretends to be completely dead.

Based on the original patch by Mateusz Jończyk this version has been
expanded to include DMI based detection & application of the fix
automatically on the affected models of laptops. This has been confirmed to
fix problem by three users already on three different models of laptops.

 can be helpful for Thomas to debug his upcoming 3.20 IRQ work, I'm
 pushing this now. This way he can add tracepoints into the IRQ set up
 and have users enable them when things go wrong.
 
 2) Have the tracepoints printed via printk() (the console) when they
 are triggered. If the irq code locks up or reboots the box, having the
 tracepoint output go into the kernel ring buffer is useless for
 debugging. But being able to add the tp_printk kernel command line
 option along with the trace_event= option will have these tracepoints
 printed as they occur, and that can be really useful for debugging
 early lock up or reboot problems.

Add the kernel command line tp_printk option that will have tracepoints
that are active sent to printk() as well as to the trace buffer.

Passing "tp_printk" will activate this. To turn it off, the sysctl
/proc/sys/kernel/tracepoint_printk can have '0' echoed into it. Note,
this only works if the cmdline option is used. Echoing 1 into the sysctl
file without the cmdline option will have no affect.

Note, this is a dangerous option. Having high frequency tracepoints send
their data to printk() can possibly cause a live lock. This is another
reason why this is only active if the command line option is used.

Joonsoo Kim 48c96a3685 mm/page_owner: keep track of page owners
This is the page owner tracking code which is introduced so far ago.  It
is resident on Andrew's tree, though, nobody tried to upstream so it
remain as is.  Our company uses this feature actively to debug memory leak
or to find a memory hogger so I decide to upstream this feature.

This functionality help us to know who allocates the page.  When
allocating a page, we store some information about allocation in extra
memory.  Later, if we need to know status of all pages, we can get and
analyze it from this stored information.

In previous version of this feature, extra memory is statically defined in
struct page, but, in this version, extra memory is allocated outside of
struct page.  It enables us to turn on/off this feature at boottime
without considerable memory waste.

Although we already have tracepoint for tracing page allocation/free,
using it to analyze page owner is rather complex.  We need to enlarge the
trace buffer for preventing overlapping until userspace program launched.
And, launched program continually dump out the trace buffer for later
analysis and it would change system behaviour with more possibility rather
than just keeping it in memory, so bad for debug.

Moreover, we can use page_owner feature further for various purposes.  For
example, we can use it for fragmentation statistics implemented in this
patch.  And, I also plan to implement some CMA failure debugging feature
using this interface.

I'd like to give the credit for all developers contributed this feature,
but, it's not easy because I don't know exact history.  Sorry about that.

Now, we have prepared to avoid using debug-pagealloc in boottime.  So
introduce new kernel-parameter to disable debug-pagealloc in boottime, and
makes related functions to be disabled in this case.

Only non-intuitive part is change of guard page functions.  Because guard
page is effective only if debug-pagealloc is enabled, turning off
according to debug-pagealloc is reasonable thing to do.

Luiz Capitulino 27ec26ecdc hugetlb: fix hugepages= entry in kernel-parameters.txt
The hugepages= entry in kernel-parameters.txt states that 1GB pages can
only be allocated at boot time and not freed afterwards.  This is not
true since commit 944d9fec8d ("hugetlb: add support for gigantic page
allocation at runtime"), at least for x86_64.

Instead of adding arch-specifc observations to the hugepages= entry,
this commit just drops the out of date information.  Further information
about arch-specific support and available features can be obtained in
the hugetlb documentation.

Linus Torvalds 92a578b064 ACPI and power management updates for 3.19-rc1
This time we have some more new material than we used to have during
 the last couple of development cycles.
 
 The most important part of it to me is the introduction of a unified
 interface for accessing device properties provided by platform
 firmware.  It works with Device Trees and ACPI in a uniform way and
 drivers using it need not worry about where the properties come
 from as long as the platform firmware (either DT or ACPI) makes
 them available.  It covers both devices and "bare" device node
 objects without struct device representation as that turns out to
 be necessary in some cases.  This has been in the works for quite
 a few months (and development cycles) and has been approved by
 all of the relevant maintainers.
 
 On top of that, some drivers are switched over to the new interface
 (at25, leds-gpio, gpio_keys_polled) and some additional changes are
 made to the core GPIO subsystem to allow device drivers to manipulate
 GPIOs in the "canonical" way on platforms that provide GPIO information
 in their ACPI tables, but don't assign names to GPIO lines (in which
 case the driver needs to do that on the basis of what it knows about
 the device in question).  That also has been approved by the GPIO
 core maintainers and the rfkill driver is now going to use it.
 
 Second is support for hardware P-states in the intel_pstate driver.
 It uses CPUID to detect whether or not the feature is supported by
 the processor in which case it will be enabled by default.  However,
 it can be disabled entirely from the kernel command line if necessary.
 
 Next is support for a platform firmware interface based on ACPI
 operation regions used by the PMIC (Power Management Integrated
 Circuit) chips on the Intel Baytrail-T and Baytrail-T-CR platforms.
 That interface is used for manipulating power resources and for
 thermal management: sensor temperature reporting, trip point setting
 and so on.
 
 Also the ACPI core is now going to support the _DEP configuration
 information in a limited way.  Basically, _DEP it supposed to reflect
 off-the-hierarchy dependencies between devices which may be very
 indirect, like when AML for one device accesses locations in an
 operation region handled by another device's driver (usually, the
 device depended on this way is a serial bus or GPIO controller).
 The support added this time is sufficient to make the ACPI battery
 driver work on Asus T100A, but it is general enough to be able to
 cover some other use cases in the future.
 
 Finally, we have a new cpufreq driver for the Loongson1B processor.
 
 In addition to the above, there are fixes and cleanups all over the
 place as usual and a traditional ACPICA update to a recent upstream
 release.
 
 As far as the fixes go, the ACPI LPSS (Low-power Subsystem) driver
 for Intel platforms should be able to handle power management of
 the DMA engine correctly, the cpufreq-dt driver should interact
 with the thermal subsystem in a better way and the ACPI backlight
 driver should handle some more corner cases, among other things.
 
 On top of the ACPICA update there are fixes for race conditions
 in the ACPICA's interrupt handling code which might lead to some
 random and strange looking failures on some systems.
 
 In the cleanups department the most visible part is the series
 of commits targeted at getting rid of the CONFIG_PM_RUNTIME
 configuration option.  That was triggered by a discussion
 regarding the generic power domains code during which we realized
 that trying to support certain combinations of PM config options
 was painful and not really worth it, because nobody would use them
 in production anyway.  For this reason, we decided to make
 CONFIG_PM_SLEEP select CONFIG_PM_RUNTIME and that lead to the
 conclusion that the latter became redundant and CONFIG_PM could

Prarit Bhargava 9e3961a097 kernel: add panic_on_warn
There have been several times where I have had to rebuild a kernel to
cause a panic when hitting a WARN() in the code in order to get a crash
dump from a system.  Sometimes this is easy to do, other times (such as
in the case of a remote admin) it is not trivial to send new images to
the user.

A much easier method would be a switch to change the WARN() over to a
panic.  This makes debugging easier in that I can now test the actual
image the WARN() was seen on and I do not have to engage in remote
debugging.

This patch adds a panic_on_warn kernel parameter and
/proc/sys/kernel/panic_on_warn calls panic() in the
warn_slowpath_common() path.  The function will still print out the
location of the warning.

An example of the panic_on_warn output:

The first line below is from the WARN_ON() to output the WARN_ON()'s
location.  After that the panic() output is displayed.

Joonsoo Kim 3e6fb8e943 Documentation: describe trace_buf_size parameter more accurately
I'm stuck into panic that too litte free memory is left when I boot with
trace_buf_size parameter. After digging into the problem, I found that
trace_buf_size is the size of trace buffer on each cpu rather than total
size of trace buffer. To prevent victim like me, change description of
trace_buf_size parameter more accurately.

Dirk Brandewie 2f86dc4cdd intel_pstate: Add support for HWP
Add support of Hardware Managed Performance States (HWP) described in Volume 3
section 14.4 of the SDM.

With HWP enbaled intel_pstate will no longer be responsible for selecting P
states for the processor. intel_pstate will continue to register to
the cpufreq core as the scaling driver for CPUs implementing
HWP. In HWP mode intel_pstate provides three functions reporting
frequency to the cpufreq core, support for the set_policy() interface
from the core and maintaining the intel_pstate sysfs interface in
/sys/devices/system/cpu/intel_pstate.  User preferences expressed via
the set_policy() interface or the sysfs interface are forwared to the
CPU via the HWP MSR interface.

Dmitry Torokhov e55a336698 Revert "Input: i8042 - disable active multiplexing by default"
This reverts commit 68da166491.

It turns out that the assertion about scope of regressions due to
always keeping keyboard controller in legacy mode was proven wrong.
There are laptops, such as Clevo W650SH, that only have internal
touchpad (no external PS/2 ports), that require active multiplexing
mode to switch the touchpad (Elantech) into native mode instead of
basic PS/2 emulation.

Clark Williams 21871d7eff rcu: Unify boost and kthread priorities
Rename CONFIG_RCU_BOOST_PRIO to CONFIG_RCU_KTHREAD_PRIO and use this
value for both the per-CPU kthreads (rcuc/N) and the rcu boosting
threads (rcub/n).

Also, create the module_parameter rcutree.kthread_prio to be used on
the kernel command line at boot to set a new value (rcutree.kthread_prio=N).
