Kay Sievers 1901fb2604 Driver core: fix "driver" symlink timing
Create the "driver" link before the child device may be created by
the probing logic. This makes it possible for userspace (udev), to
determine the driver property of the parent device, at the time the
child device is created.

Benjamin Herrenschmidt 116af37820 Driver core: add notification of bus events
I finally did as you suggested and added the notifier to the struct
bus_type itself. There are still problems to be expected is something
attaches to a bus type where the code can hook in different struct
device sub-classes (which is imho a big bogosity but I won't even try to
argue that case now) but it will solve nicely a number of issues I've
had so far.

That also means that clients interested in registering for such
notifications have to do it before devices are added and after bus types
are registered. Fortunately, most bus types that matter for the various
usage scenarios I have in mind are registerd at postcore_initcall time,
which means I have a really nice spot at arch_initcall time to add my
notifiers.

There are 4 notifications provided. Device being added (before hooked to
the bus) and removed (failure of previous case or after being unhooked
from the bus), along with driver being bound to a device and about to be
unbound.

The usage I have for these are:

 - The 2 first ones are used to maintain a struct device_ext that is
hooked to struct device.firmware_data. This structure contains for now a
pointer to the Open Firmware node related to the device (if any), the
NUMA node ID (for quick access to it) and the DMA operations pointers &
iommu table instance for DMA to/from this device. For bus types I own
(like IBM VIO or EBUS), I just maintain that structure directly from the
bus code when creating the devices. But for bus types managed by generic
code like PCI or platform (actually, of_platform which is a variation of
platform linked to Open Firmware device-tree), I need this notifier.

 - The other two ones have a completely different usage scenario. I have
cases where multiple devices and their drivers depend on each other. For
example, the IBM EMAC network driver needs to attach to a MAL DMA engine
which is a separate device, and a PHY interface which is also a separate
device. They are all of_platform_device's (well, about to be with my
upcoming patches) but there is no say in what precise order the core
will "probe" them and instanciate the various modules. The solution I
found for that is to have the drivers for emac to use multithread_probe,
and wait for a driver to be bound to the target MAL and PHY control
devices (the device-tree contains reference to the MAL and PHY interface
nodes, which I can then match to of_platform_devices). Right now, I've
been polling, but with that notifier, I can more cleanly wait (with a
timeout of course).

Andrew Morton 735a7ffb73 [PATCH] drivers: wait for threaded probes between initcall levels
The multithreaded-probing code has a problem: after one initcall level (eg,
core_initcall) has been processed, we will then start processing the next
level (postcore_initcall) while the kernel threads which are handling
core_initcall are still executing. This breaks the guarantees which the
layered initcalls previously gave us.

IOW, we want to be multithreaded _within_ an initcall level, but not between
different levels.

Fix that up by causing the probing code to wait for all outstanding probes at
one level to complete before we start processing the next level.

This patch (as797) fixes device_add() in the driver core. It needs to
pay attention when the driver for a new device reports an error.

the bus_attach_device step failed.

Shaohua Li a30a6a2cb0 [PATCH] x86 microcode: using request_firmware to pull microcode
Using request_firmware to pull ucode from userspace, so we don't need the
application 'microcode_ctl' to assist. We name each ucode file according
to CPU's info as intel-ucode/family-model-stepping. In this way we could
split ucode file as small one. This has a lot of advantages such as
selectively update and validate microcode for specific models, better
manage microcode file, easily write tools for administerators and so on.
with the changes, we should put all intel-ucode/xx-xx-xx microcode files
into the firmware dir (I had a tool to split previous big data file into
small one and later we will release new style data file). The init script
should be changed to just loading the driver without unloading

Alan Stern 81107bf531 Driver core: Remove unneeded routines from driver core
This patch (as783) simplifies the driver core slightly by removing four
unnecessary _get and _put methods.

It is vital that when a driver is removed from its bus's klist of
registered drivers, or when a device is removed from a driver's klist
of bound devices, that the klist updates complete synchronously.
Otherwise the kernel might try binding an unregistered driver to a
newly-registered device, or adding a device to the klist for a new
driver before it has been removed from the old driver's klist.

Since the removals must be synchronous, they don't need to update any
reference counts. Hence the _get and _put methods can be dispensed
with.

Alan Stern f2eaae197f Driver core: Fix potential deadlock in driver core
There is a potential deadlock in the driver core. It boils down to
the fact that bus_remove_device() calls klist_remove() instead of
klist_del(), thereby waiting until the reference count of the
klist_node in the bus's klist of devices drops to 0. The refcount
can't reach 0 so long as a modprobe process is trying to bind a new
driver to the device being removed, by calling __driver_attach(). The
problem is that __driver_attach() tries to acquire the device's
parent's semaphore, but the caller of bus_remove_device() is quite
likely to own that semaphore already.

It isn't sufficient just to replace klist_remove() with klist_del().
Doing so runs the risk that the device would remain on the bus's klist
of devices for some time, and so could be bound to another driver even
after it was unregistered. What's needed is a new way to distinguish
whether or not a device is registered, based on a criterion other than
whether its klist_node is linked into the bus's klist of devices. That
way driver binding can fail when the device is unregistered, even if
it is still linked into the klist.

This patch (as782) implements the solution, by adding a new bitflag to
indiate when a struct device is registered, by testing the flag before
allowing a driver to bind a device, and by changing the definition of
the device_is_registered() inline.

Greg Kroah-Hartman d779249ed4 Driver Core: add ability for drivers to do a threaded probe
This adds the infrastructure for drivers to do a threaded probe, and
waits at init time for all currently outstanding probes to complete.

A new kernel thread will be created when the probe() function for the
driver is called, if the multithread_probe bit is set in the driver
saying it can support this kind of operation.

I have tested this with USB and PCI, and it works, and shaves off a lot
of time in the boot process, but there are issues with finding root boot
disks, and some USB drivers assume that this can never happen, so it is
currently not enabled for any bus type. Individual drivers can enable
this right now if they wish, and bus authors can selectivly turn it on
as well, once they determine that their subsystem will work properly
with it.

Greg Kroah-Hartman 2620efef70 Driver core: add ability for classes to handle devices properly

	int	(*dev_uevent)(struct device *dev, char **envp, int num_envp,

	void	(*dev_release)(struct device *dev);

And one pointer:
	struct device_attribute		* dev_attrs;

which all corrispond with the same thing as the "normal" class devices
do, yet this is for when a struct device is bound to a class.

Someday soon, struct class_device will go away, and then the other
fields in this structure can be removed too. But this is necessary in
order to get the transition to work properly.

Christoph Lameter ca889e6c45 [PATCH] Use Zoned VM Counters for NUMA statistics
The numa statistics are really event counters. But they are per node and
so we have had special treatment for these counters through additional
fields on the pcp structure. We can now use the per zone nature of the
zoned VM counters to realize these.

This will shrink the size of the pcp structure on NUMA systems. We will
have some room to add additional per zone counters that will all still fit
in the same cacheline.

 Bits	Prior pcp size Size after patch	We can add
 ------------------------------------------------------------------
 64	128 bytes (16 words)	80 bytes (10 words)	48
 32	 76 bytes (19 words)	56 bytes (14 words)	8 (64 byte cacheline)
							72 (128 byte)

Remove the special statistics for numa and replace them with zoned vm
counters. This has the side effect that global sums of these events now
show up in /proc/vmstat.

Also take the opportunity to move the zone_statistics() function from
page_alloc.c into vmstat.c.

Christoph Lameter f3dbd34460 [PATCH] zoned vm counters: split NR_ANON_PAGES off from NR_FILE_MAPPED
The current NR_FILE_MAPPED is used by zone reclaim and the dirty load
calculation as the number of mapped pagecache pages. However, that is not
true. NR_FILE_MAPPED includes the mapped anonymous pages. This patch
separates those and therefore allows an accurate tracking of the anonymous
pages per zone.

It then becomes possible to determine the number of unmapped pages per zone
and we can avoid scanning for unmapped pages if there are none.

Also it may now be possible to determine the mapped/unmapped ratio in
get_dirty_limit. Isnt the number of anonymous pages irrelevant in that
calculation?

Note that this will change the meaning of the number of mapped pages reported
in /proc/vmstat /proc/meminfo and in the per node statistics. This may affect
user space tools that monitor these counters! NR_FILE_MAPPED works like
NR_FILE_DIRTY. It is only valid for pagecache pages.

Christoph Lameter 65ba55f500 [PATCH] zoned vm counters: convert nr_mapped to per zone counter
nr_mapped is important because it allows a determination of how many pages of
a zone are not mapped, which would allow a more efficient means of determining
when we need to reclaim memory in a zone.

We take the nr_mapped field out of the page state structure and define a new
per zone counter named NR_FILE_MAPPED (the anonymous pages will be split off
from NR_MAPPED in the next patch).

We replace the use of nr_mapped in various kernel locations. This avoids the
looping over all processors in try_to_free_pages(), writeback, reclaim (swap +
zone reclaim).

KAMEZAWA Hiroyuki 76b67ed9dc [PATCH] node hotplug: register cpu: remove node struct
With Goto-san's patch, we can add new pgdat/node at runtime. I'm now
considering node-hot-add with cpu + memory on ACPI.

I found acpi container, which describes node, could evaluate cpu before
memory. This means cpu-hot-add occurs before memory hot add.

In most part, cpu-hot-add doesn't depend on node hot add. But register_cpu(),
which creates symbolic link from node to cpu, requires that node should be
onlined before register_cpu(). When a node is onlined, its pgdat should be
there.

This patch-set holds off creating symbolic link from node to cpu
until node is onlined.

This removes node arguments from register_cpu().

Now, register_cpu() requires 'struct node' as its argument. But the array of
struct node is now unified in driver/base/node.c now (By Goto's node hotplug
patch). We can get struct node in generic way. So, this argument is not
necessary now.

This patch also guarantees add cpu under node only when node is onlined. It
is necessary for node-hot-add vs. cpu-hot-add patch following this.

Moreover, register_cpu calculates cpu->node_id by cpu_to_node() without regard
to its 'struct node *root' argument. This patch removes it.

Also modify callers of register_cpu()/unregister_cpu, whose args are changed
by register-cpu-remove-node-struct patch.

Rene Herman a5117ba7da [PATCH] Driver model: add ISA bus
During the recent "isa drivers using platform devices" discussion it was
pointed out that (ALSA) ISA drivers ran into the problem of not having
the option to fail driver load (device registration rather) upon not
finding their hardware due to a probe() error not being passed up
through the driver model. In the course of that, I suggested a seperate
ISA bus might be best; Russell King agreed and suggested this bus could
use the .match() method for the actual device discovery.

The attached does this. For this old non (generically) discoverable ISA
hardware only the driver itself can do discovery so as a difference with
the platform_bus, this isa_bus also distributes match() up to the driver.

As another difference: these devices only exist in the driver model due
to the driver creating them because it might want to drive them, meaning
that all device creation has been made internal as well.

The usage model this provides is nice, and has been acked from the ALSA
side by Takashi Iwai and Jaroslav Kysela. The ALSA driver module_init's
now (for oldisa-only drivers) become:

static int __init alsa_card_foo_init(void)
{
	return isa_register_driver(&snd_foo_isa_driver, SNDRV_CARDS);
}

static void __exit alsa_card_foo_exit(void)
{
	isa_unregister_driver(&snd_foo_isa_driver);
}

Quite like the other bus models therefore. This removes a lot of
duplicated init code from the ALSA ISA drivers.

The passed in isa_driver struct is the regular driver struct embedding a
struct device_driver, the normal probe/remove/shutdown/suspend/resume
callbacks, and as indicated that .match callback.

The "SNDRV_CARDS" you see being passed in is a "unsigned int ndev"
parameter, indicating how many devices to create and call our methods with.

The platform_driver callbacks are called with a platform_device param;
the isa_driver callbacks are being called with a "struct device *dev,
unsigned int id" pair directly -- with the device creation completely
internal to the bus it's much cleaner to not leak isa_dev's by passing
them in at all. The id is the only thing we ever want other then the
struct device * anyways, and it makes for nicer code in the callbacks as
well.

With this additional .match() callback ISA drivers have all options. If
ALSA would want to keep the old non-load behaviour, it could stick all
of the old .probe in .match, which would only keep them registered after
everything was found to be present and accounted for. If it wanted the
behaviour of always loading as it inadvertently did for a bit after the
changeover to platform devices, it could just not provide a .match() and
do everything in .probe() as before.

If it, as Takashi Iwai already suggested earlier as a way of following
the model from saner buses more closely, wants to load when a later bind
could conceivably succeed, it could use .match() for the prerequisites
(such as checking the user wants the card enabled and that port/irq/dma
values have been passed in) and .probe() for everything else. This is
the nicest model.

To the code...

This exports only two functions; isa_{,un}register_driver().

isa_register_driver() register's the struct device_driver, and then
loops over the passed in ndev creating devices and registering them.
This causes the bus match method to be called for them, which is:

int isa_bus_match(struct device *dev, struct device_driver *driver)
{
          struct isa_driver *isa_driver = to_isa_driver(driver);

          if (dev->platform_data == isa_driver) {
                  if (!isa_driver->match ||
                          isa_driver->match(dev, to_isa_dev(dev)->id))
                          return 1;
                  dev->platform_data = NULL;
          }
          return 0;
}

The first thing this does is check if this device is in fact one of this
driver's devices by seeing if the device's platform_data pointer is set
to this driver. Platform devices compare strings, but we don't need to
do that with everything being internal, so isa_register_driver() abuses
dev->platform_data as a isa_driver pointer which we can then check here.
I believe platform_data is available for this, but if rather not, moving
the isa_driver pointer to the private struct isa_dev is ofcourse fine as
well.

Then, if the the driver did not provide a .match, it matches. If it did,
the driver match() method is called to determine a match.

If it did _not_ match, dev->platform_data is reset to indicate this to
isa_register_driver which can then unregister the device again.

If during all this, there's any error, or no devices matched at all
everything is backed out again and the error, or -ENODEV, is returned.

isa_unregister_driver() just unregisters the matched devices and the
driver itself.

More global points/questions...

- I'm introducing include/linux/isa.h. It was available but is ofcourse
a somewhat generic name. Moving more isa stuff over to it in time is
ofcourse fine, so can I have it please? :)

- I'm using device_initcall() and added the isa.o (dependent on
CONFIG_ISA) after the base driver model things in the Makefile. Will
this do, or I really need to stick it in drivers/base/init.c, inside
#ifdef CONFIG_ISA? It's working fine.

Lastly -- I also looked, a bit, into integrating with PnP. "Old ISA"
could be another pnp_protocol, but this does not seem to be a good
match, largely due to the same reason platform_devices weren't -- the
devices do not have a life of their own outside the driver, meaning the
pnp_protocol {get,set}_resources callbacks would need to callback into
driver -- which again means you first need to _have_ that driver. Even
if there's clean way around that, you only end up inventing fake but
valid-form PnP IDs and generally catering to the PnP layer without any
practical advantages over this very simple isa_bus. The thing I also
suggested earlier about the user echoing values into /sys to set up the
hardware from userspace first is... well, cute, but a horrible idea from
a user standpoint.

Comments ofcourse appreciated. Hope it's okay. As said, the usage model
is nice at least.

Ryan Wilson 372254018e [PATCH] driver core: driver_bind attribute returns incorrect value
The manual driver <-> device binding attribute in sysfs doesn't return
the correct value on failure or success of driver_probe_device.
driver_probe_device returns 1 on success (the driver accepted the
device) or 0 on probe failure (when the driver didn't accept the
device but no real error occured). However, the attribute can't just
return 0 or 1, it must return the number of bytes consumed from buf
or an error value. Returning 0 indicates to userspace that nothing
was written (even though the kernel has tried to do the bind/probe and
failed). Returning 1 indicates that only one character was accepted in
which case userspace will re-try the write with a partial string.

A more correct version of driver_bind would return count (to indicate
the entire string was consumed) when driver_probe_device returns 1
and -ENODEV when driver_probe_device returns 0. This patch makes that
change.

Alan Stern e041c68341 [PATCH] Notifier chain update: API changes
The kernel's implementation of notifier chains is unsafe. There is no
protection against entries being added to or removed from a chain while the
chain is in use. The issues were discussed in this thread:

    http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=linux-kernel&m=113018709002036&w=2

We noticed that notifier chains in the kernel fall into two basic usage
classes:

	"Blocking" chains are always called from a process context
	and the callout routines are allowed to sleep;

	"Atomic" chains can be called from an atomic context and
	the callout routines are not allowed to sleep.

We decided to codify this distinction and make it part of the API. Therefore
this set of patches introduces three new, parallel APIs: one for blocking
notifiers, one for atomic notifiers, and one for "raw" notifiers (which is
really just the old API under a new name). New kinds of data structures are
used for the heads of the chains, and new routines are defined for
registration, unregistration, and calling a chain. The three APIs are
explained in include/linux/notifier.h and their implementation is in
kernel/sys.c.

With atomic and blocking chains, the implementation guarantees that the chain
links will not be corrupted and that chain callers will not get messed up by
entries being added or removed. For raw chains the implementation provides no
guarantees at all; users of this API must provide their own protections. (The
idea was that situations may come up where the assumptions of the atomic and
blocking APIs are not appropriate, so it should be possible for users to
handle these things in their own way.)

There are some limitations, which should not be too hard to live with. For
atomic/blocking chains, registration and unregistration must always be done in
a process context since the chain is protected by a mutex/rwsem. Also, a
callout routine for a non-raw chain must not try to register or unregister
entries on its own chain. (This did happen in a couple of places and the code
had to be changed to avoid it.)

Since atomic chains may be called from within an NMI handler, they cannot use
spinlocks for synchronization. Instead we use RCU. The overhead falls almost
entirely in the unregister routine, which is okay since unregistration is much
less frequent that calling a chain.

Here is the list of chains that we adjusted and their classifications. None
of them use the raw API, so for the moment it is only a placeholder.

It's possible that some of these classifications are wrong. If they are,
please let us know or submit a patch to fix them. Note that any chain that
gets called very frequently should be atomic, because the rwsem read-locking
used for blocking chains is very likely to incur cache misses on SMP systems.
(However, if the chain's callout routines may sleep then the chain cannot be
atomic.)

The patch set was written by Alan Stern and Chandra Seetharaman, incorporating
material written by Keith Owens and suggestions from Paul McKenney and Andrew
Morton.

The fw_realloc_buffer routine does not handle an increase in buffer size of

as much memory as is requested, instead of what we previously had + 4k.

I've tested this on my laptop, which would crash occaisionally on boot

Zhang, Yanmin 69dcc99199 [PATCH] Export cpu topology in sysfs
The patch implements cpu topology exportation by sysfs.

Items (attributes) are similar to /proc/cpuinfo.

1) /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpuX/topology/physical_package_id:
	represent the physical package id of  cpu X;
2) /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpuX/topology/core_id:
	represent the cpu core id to cpu X;
3) /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpuX/topology/thread_siblings:
	represent the thread siblings to cpu X in the same core;
4) /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpuX/topology/core_siblings:
	represent the thread siblings to cpu X in the same physical package;

To implement it in an architecture-neutral way, a new source file,
driver/base/topology.c, is to export the 5 attributes.

If one architecture wants to support this feature, it just needs to
implement 4 defines, typically in file include/asm-XXX/topology.h.
The 4 defines are:
#define topology_physical_package_id(cpu)
#define topology_core_id(cpu)
#define topology_thread_siblings(cpu)
#define topology_core_siblings(cpu)

The type of **_id is int.
The type of siblings is cpumask_t.

To be consistent on all architectures, the 4 attributes should have
deafult values if their values are unavailable. Below is the rule.

1) physical_package_id: If cpu has no physical package id, -1 is the
default value.

2) core_id: If cpu doesn't support multi-core, its core id is 0.

3) thread_siblings: Just include itself, if the cpu doesn't support
HT/multi-thread.

4) core_siblings: Just include itself, if the cpu doesn't support
multi-core and HT/Multi-thread.

So be careful when declaring the 4 defines in include/asm-XXX/topology.h.

If an attribute isn't defined on an architecture, it won't be exported.

Thank Nathan, Greg, Andi, Paul and Venki.

The patch provides defines for i386/x86_64/ia64.

Michael Richardson 9c08a938ce [PATCH] device_shutdown can loop if the driver frees itself
This patch changes device_shutdown() to use the newly introduced safe
reverse list traversal. We experienced loops on system reboot if we had
removed and re-inserted our device from the device list.

We noticed this problem on PPC405. Our PCI IDE device comes and goes a lot.

Our hypothesis was that there was a loop caused by the driver->shutdown
freeing memory. It is possible that we do something wrong as well, but
being unable to reboot is kind of nasty.

Alan Stern bf74ad5bc4 [PATCH] Hold the device's parent's lock during probe and remove
This patch (as604) makes the driver core hold a device's parent's lock
as well as the device's lock during calls to the probe and remove
methods in a driver. This facility is needed by USB device drivers,
owing to the peculiar way USB devices work:

	A device provides multiple interfaces, and drivers are bound
	to interfaces rather than to devices;

	Nevertheless a reset, reset-configuration, suspend, or resume
	affects the entire device and requires the caller to hold the
	lock for the device, not just a lock for one of the interfaces.

Since a USB driver's probe method is always called with the interface
lock held, the locking order rules (always lock parent before child)
prevent these methods from acquiring the device lock. The solution
provided here is to call all probe and remove methods, for all devices
(not just USB), with the parent lock already acquired.

Although currently only the USB subsystem requires these changes, people
have mentioned in prior discussion that the overhead of acquiring an
extra semaphore in all the prove/remove sequences is not overly large.

Up to now, the USB core has been using its own set of private
semaphores. A followup patch will remove them, relying entirely on the
device semaphores provided by the driver core.

The code paths affected by this patch are:

	device_add and device_del: The USB core already holds the parent
	lock, so no actual change is needed.

	driver_register and driver_unregister: The driver core will now
	lock both the parent and the device before probing or removing.

	driver_bind and driver_unbind (in sysfs): These routines will
	now lock both the parent and the device before binding or
	unbinding.

	bus_rescan_devices: The helper routine will lock the parent
	before probing a device.

I have not tested this patch for conflicts with other subsystems. As
far as I can see, the only possibility of conflict would lie in the
bus_rescan_devices pathway, and it seems pretty remote. Nevertheless,
it would be good for this to get a lot of testing in -mm.

Tim Schmielau 4e57b68178 [PATCH] fix missing includes
I recently picked up my older work to remove unnecessary #includes of
sched.h, starting from a patch by Dave Jones to not include sched.h
from module.h. This reduces the number of indirect includes of sched.h
by ~300. Another ~400 pointless direct includes can be removed after
this disentangling (patch to follow later).
However, quite a few indirect includes need to be fixed up for this.

In order to feed the patches through -mm with as little disturbance as
possible, I've split out the fixes I accumulated up to now (complete for
i386 and x86_64, more archs to follow later) and post them before the real
patch. This way this large part of the patch is kept simple with only
adding #includes, and all hunks are independent of each other. So if any
hunk rejects or gets in the way of other patches, just drop it. My scripts
will pick it up again in the next round.

Some modules creating sysfs entries under /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpuX/

sysfs entries showing under each cpu sysfs can be easily created if such
entries can be created by registering a sysfs driver for cpuclass. The
issue is when the entry is created the CPU may not be online, hence we
would need to defer the creation until the online notification comes.

Dave Hansen 0b0acbec1b [PATCH] memory hotplug: move section_mem_map alloc to sparse.c
This basically keeps up from having to extern __kmalloc_section_memmap().

The vaddr_in_vmalloc_area() helper could go in a vmalloc header, but that
header gets hard to work with, because it needs some arch-specific macros.
Just stick it in here for now, instead of creating another header.

David Brownell 979d5199fe [PATCH] root hub changes (lesser half)
This patch collects various small updates related to root hubs, to shrink
later patches which build on them.

  - For root hub suspend/resume support:
     * Make the existing usb_hcd_resume_root_hub() routine respect pmcore
       locking, exporting and using the dpm_runtime_resume() method.
     * Add a new usb_hcd_suspend_root_hub() to pair with that routine.
       (Essential to make OHCI autosuspend behave again...)
     * HC_SUSPENDED by itself only refers to the root hub's downstream ports.
       So let HCDs see root hub URBs unless the parent device is suspended.

  - Remove an assertion we no longer need (and now, also don't want).

  - Generic suspend/resume updates to work better with swsusp.
     * Ignore the FREEZE vs SUSPEND distinction for hardware; trying to
       use it breaks the swsusp snapshots it's supposed to help (sigh).
     * On resume, mark devices as resumed right away, but then
       do nothing else if the device is marked NOTATTACHED.

These changes shouldn't be very noticable by themselves.

Russell King 9480e307cd [PATCH] DRIVER MODEL: Get rid of the obsolete tri-level suspend/resume callbacks
In PM v1, all devices were called at SUSPEND_DISABLE level. Then
all devices were called at SUSPEND_SAVE_STATE level, and finally
SUSPEND_POWER_DOWN level. However, with PM v2, to maintain
compatibility for platform devices, I arranged for the PM v2
suspend/resume callbacks to call the old PM v1 suspend/resume
callbacks three times with each level in order so that existing

Since this is obsolete infrastructure which is no longer necessary,

Ben Dooks a1bdc7aad8 [PATCH] drivers/base - fix sparse warnings
There are a number of sparse warnings from the latest sparse
snapshot being generated from the drivers/base build. The
main culprits are due to the initialisation functions not
being declared in a header file.

Also, the firmware.c file should include <linux/device.h>
to get the prototype of firmware_register() and
firmware_unregister().

This patch moves the init function declerations from the
init.c file to the base.h, and ensures it is included in
all the relevant c sources. It also adds <linux/device.h>
to the included headers for firmware.c.

The patch does not solve all the sparse errors generated,
but reduces the count significantly.

Greg Kroah-Hartman 51d172d5f3 [PATCH] Driver Core: add the ability for class_device structures to be nested
This patch allows struct class_device to be nested, so that another
struct class_device can be the parent of a new one, instead of only
having the struct class be the parent. This will allow us to
(hopefully) fix up the input and video class subsystem mess.

But please people, don't go crazy and start making huge trees of class
devices, you should only need 2 levels deep to get everything to work
(remember to use a class_interface to get notification of a new class
device being added to the system.)

Oh, this also allows us to have the possibility of potentially, someday,
moving /sys/block into /sys/class. The main hindrance is that pesky
/dev numberspace issue...

David Brownell 0ac85241eb [PATCH] driver model wakeup flags
This is a refresh of an earlier patch to add "wakeup" support to the
PM core model. This provides per-device bus-neutral control of the
use of wakeup events.

  * "struct device_pm_info" has two bits that are initialized as
    part of setting up the enclosing struct device:
      - "can_wakeup", reflecting hardware capabilities
      - "may_wakeup", the policy setting (when CONFIG_PM)

  * There's a writeable sysfs "wakeup" file, with one of two values:
      - "enabled", when the policy is to allow wakeup
      - "disabled", when the policy is not to allow it
      - "" if the device can't currently issue wakeups

By default, wakeup is enabled on all devices that support it. If its
driver doesn't support it ... treat it as a bug. :)

Bill Nottingham 3e51377dc4 [PATCH] fix class symlinks in sysfs
The class symlinks in sysfs don't properly handle changing device names.

To demonstrate, rename your network device from eth0 to eth1. Your

except now it points to /sys/class/net/eth1.

The attached patch makes sure the class symlink name changes when

Daniel Ritz 4c898c7f2f [PATCH] Driver Core: fis bus rescan devices race
bus_rescan_devices_helper() does not hold the dev->sem when it checks for
!dev->driver(). device_attach() holds the sem, but calls again
device_bind_driver() even when dev->driver is set.

What happens is that a first device_attach() call (module insertion time)
is on the way binding the device to a driver. Another thread calls
bus_rescan_devices(). Now when bus_rescan_devices_helper() checks for
dev->driver it is still NULL 'cos the the prior device_attach() is not yet
finished. But as soon as the first one releases the dev->sem the second
device_attach() tries to rebind the already bound device again.
device_bind_driver() does this blindly which leads to a corrupt
driver->klist_devices list (the device links itself, the head points to the
device). Later a call to device_release_driver() sets dev->driver to NULL
and breaks the link it has to itself on knode_driver. Rmmoding the driver
later calls driver_detach() which leads to an endless loop 'cos the list
head in klist_devices still points to the device. And since dev->driver is
NULL it's stuck with the same device forever. Boom. And rmmod hangs.

Very easy to reproduce with new-style pcmcia and a 16bit card. Just loop
modprobe <pcmcia-modules> ;cardctl eject; rmmod <card driver, pcmcia
modules>.

Easiest fix is to check if the device is already bound to a driver in
device_bind_driver(). This avoids the double binding.

James Bottomley 34bb61f9dd [PATCH] fix klist semantics for lists which have elements removed on traversal
The problem is that klists claim to provide semantics for safe traversal of
lists which are being modified. The failure case is when traversal of a
list causes element removal (a fairly common case). The issue is that
although the list node is refcounted, if it is embedded in an object (which
is universally the case), then the object will be freed regardless of the
klist refcount leading to slab corruption because the klist iterator refers
to the prior element to get the next.

The solution is to make the klist take and release references to the
embedding object meaning that the embedding object won't be released until
the list relinquishes the reference to it.

Maneesh Soni 208f3d6175 [PATCH] Driver core: potentially fix use after free in class_device_attr_show
This moves the code to free devt_attr from class_device_del() to
class_dev_release() which is called after the last reference to the
corresponding kobject() is gone.

This allows us to keep the devt_attr alive while the corresponding
sysfs file is open.

James Bottomley d0a7e57400 [SCSI] correct transport class abstraction to work outside SCSI
I recently tried to construct a totally generic transport class and
found there were certain features missing from the current abstract
transport class. Most notable is that you have to hang the data on the
class_device but most of the API is framed in terms of the generic
device, not the class_device.

These changes are two fold

- Provide the class_device to all of the setup and configure APIs
- Provide and extra API to take the device and the attribute class and
  return the corresponding class_device

Greg Kroah-Hartman afdce75f1e [PATCH] driver core: Add the ability to bind drivers to devices from userspace
This adds a single file, "bind", to the sysfs directory of every driver
registered with the driver core. To bind a device to a driver, write
the bus id of the device you wish to bind to that specific driver to the
"bind" file (remember to not add a trailing \n). If that bus id matches
a device on that bus, and it does not currently have a driver bound to
it, the probe sequence will be initiated with that driver and device.

Note, this requires that the driver itself be willing and able to accept
that device (usually through a device id type table). This patch does
not make it possible to override the driver's id table.

Christoph Lameter e7c8d5c995 [PATCH] node local per-cpu-pages
This patch modifies the way pagesets in struct zone are managed.

Each zone has a per-cpu array of pagesets. So any particular CPU has some
memory in each zone structure which belongs to itself. Even if that CPU is
not local to that zone.

So the patch relocates the pagesets for each cpu to the node that is nearest
to the cpu instead of allocating the pagesets in the (possibly remote) target
zone. This means that the operations to manage pages on remote zone can be
done with information available locally.

We play a macro trick so that non-NUMA pmachines avoid the additional
pointer chase on the page allocator fastpath.

Alan Stern c95a6b057b [PATCH] driver core: Fix races in driver_detach()
This patch is intended for your "driver" tree. It fixes several subtle
races in driver_detach() and device_release_driver() in the driver-model
core.

The major change is to use klist_remove() rather than klist_del() when
taking a device off its driver's list. There's no other way to guarantee
that the list pointers will be updated before some other driver binds to
the device. For this to work driver_detach() can't use a klist iterator,
so the loop over the devices must be written out in full. In addition the
patch protects against the possibility that, when a driver and a device
are unregistered at the same time, one may be unloaded from memory before
the other is finished using it.

Patrick Mochel 0d3e5a2e39 [PATCH] Driver Core: fix bk-driver-core kills ppc64
There's no check to see if the device is already bound to a driver, which
could do bad things. The first thing to go wrong is that it will try to match
a driver with a device already bound to one. In some cases (it appears with
USB with drivers/usb/core/usb.c::usb_match_id()), some drivers will match a
device based on the class type, so it would be common (especially for HID
devices) to match a device that is already bound.

The fun comes when ->probe() is called, it fails, then
driver_probe_device() does this:

	dev->driver = NULL;

Later on, that pointer could be be dereferenced without checking and cause
hell to break loose.

This problem could be nasty. It's very hardware dependent, since some
devices could have a different set of matching qualifiers than others.

Now, I don't quite see exactly where/how you were getting that crash.
You're dereferencing bad memory, but I'm not sure which pointer was bad
and where it came from, but it could have come from a couple of different
places.

The patch below will hopefully fix it all up for you. It's against
2.6.12-rc2-mm1, and does the following:

- Move logic to driver_probe_device() and comments uncommon returns:
  1 - If device is bound
  0 - If device not bound, and no error
  error - If there was an error.

- Move locking to caller of that function, since we want to lock a
  device for the entire time we're trying to bind it to a driver (to
  prevent against a driver being loaded at the same time).

- Update __device_attach() and __driver_attach() to do that locking.

- Check if device is already bound in __driver_attach()

- Update the converse device_release_driver() so it locks the device
  around all of the operations.

- Mark driver_probe_device() as static and remove export. It's an
  internal function, it should stay that way, and there are no other
  callers. If there is ever a need to export it, we can audit it as
  necessary.

mochel@digitalimplant.org af70316af1 [PATCH] Add a semaphore to struct device to synchronize calls to its driver.
This adds a per-device semaphore that is taken before every call from the core to a
driver method. This prevents e.g. simultaneous calls to the ->suspend() or ->resume()
and ->probe() or ->release(), potentially saving a whole lot of headaches.

It also moves us a step closer to removing the bus rwsem, since it protects the fields
in struct device that are modified by the core.

the devt logic moved to the class core.

As a result of the split of the kobject-registration and the

David Brownell 0b405a0f7e [PATCH] Driver Core: remove driver model detach_state
The driver model has a "detach_state" mechanism that:

 - Has never been used by any in-kernel drive;
 - Is superfluous, since driver remove() methods can do the same thing;
 - Became buggy when the suspend() parameter changed semantics and type;
 - Could self-deadlock when called from certain suspend contexts;
 - Is effectively wasted documentation, object code, and headspace.

This removes that "detach_state" mechanism; net code shrink, as well
as a per-device saving in the driver model and sysfs.

David Brownell 82428b62aa [PATCH] Driver Core: pm diagnostics update, check for errors
This patch includes various tweaks in the messaging that appears during
system pm state transitions:

  * Warn about certain illegal calls in the device tree, like resuming
    child before parent or suspending parent before child. This could
    happen easily enough through sysfs, or in some cases when drivers
    use device_pm_set_parent().

  * Be more consistent about dev_dbg() tracing ... do it for resume() and
    shutdown() too, and never if the driver doesn't have that method.

  * Say which type of system sleep state is being entered.

Except for the warnings, these only affect debug messaging.

Roman Kagan b2d84f078a [PATCH] drivers/base/bus.c: fix iteration in driver_detach()
With 2.6.11 and 2.6.12-rc2 (and perhaps a few versions before) usb
drivers for multi-interface devices, which do
usb_driver_release_interface() in their disconnect(), make rmmod hang.

It turns out to be due to a bug in drivers/base/bus.c:driver_detach(),
that iterates over the list of attached devices with
list_for_each_safe() under an assumption that device_release_driver()
only releases the current device, while it may also call
device_release_driver() for other devices on the same list.

The following patch fixes it. Please consider applying.

Robert Schwebel 46ea0d6c26 [PATCH] export platform_add_devices
platform_add_devices can be used from within modules, so it should be
exported. This can for example happen if you have hotpluggable firmware in
an FPGA on a system on chip processor; in our case the FPGA is probed for
devices and the FPGA base code registers the devices it has found with the
kernel.

(akpm: I think this is reasonable from a licensing POV: it's unlikely that
anyone would be interested in merging such specialised modules into mainline,
and it's a GPL export).

it finds a TIMEOUT key.

Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history,
even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git
archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about
3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early
git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good
infrastructure for it.

Let it rip!
