Robert Richter f7a8a13364 perf tools: Continue processing header on unknown features
A feature may be unknown if perf.data is created and parsed on different
perf tool versions. This should not stop the header to be processed,
instead continue processing it.

Jiri Olsa 29208e573a perf tools: Fix tracing info recording
Fixing the way the tracing information is stored within record command.
The current implementation is causing issues for pipe output.

Following commands fail currently:
	perf script syscall-counts ls
	perf record -e syscalls:sys_exit_read ls | ./perf report -i -

The tracing information is part of the perf data file. It contains
several files from within the tracing debugfs and procs directories.

Beside some static header files, for each tracing event the format
file is added. The /proc/kallsyms file is also added.

The tracing data are stored with preceeding size. This is causing some
dificulties for pipe output, since there's no way to tell debugfs/proc
file size before reading it. So, for pipe output, all the debugfs files
were read twice. Once to get the overall size and once to store the
content itself. This can cause problem in case any of these file
changed, within the storage time.

To fix this behaviour and ensure the integrity of the tracing data, we:
    - read debugfs/proc file into the temp file
    - get temp file size and dump it to the pipe
    - dump the temp file contents to the pipe

David Ahern d327fa4359 perf tools: handle endianness of feature bitmap
Feature bitmap is declared as an array of unsigned longs -- not good
since its size can differ between the host that generated the data file
and the host analyzing the file.

We need to handle endianness, but we don't know the size of the unsigned
long where the file was generated. Take a best guess at determining it:
try 64-bit swap first (ie., file created on a 64-bit host), and check if
the hostname feature bit is set (this feature bit is forced on as of
fbe96f2). If the bit is not, undo the 64-bit swap and try a 32-bit
swap. If the hostname bit is still not set (e.g., older data file), punt
and fallback to the original behavior -- clearing all feature bits and
setting buildid.

Stephane Eranian fbe96f29ce perf tools: Make perf.data more self-descriptive (v8)
The goal of this patch is to include more information about the host
environment into the perf.data so it is more self-descriptive. Overtime,
profiles are captured on various machines and it becomes hard to track
what was recorded, on what machine and when.

This patch provides a way to solve this by extending the perf.data file
with basic information about the host machine. To add those extensions,
we leverage the feature bits capabilities of the perf.data format. The
change is backward compatible with existing perf.data files.

We define the following useful new extensions:
 - HEADER_HOSTNAME: the hostname
 - HEADER_OSRELEASE: the kernel release number
 - HEADER_ARCH: the hw architecture
 - HEADER_CPUDESC: generic CPU description
 - HEADER_NRCPUS: number of online/avail cpus
 - HEADER_CMDLINE: perf command line
 - HEADER_VERSION: perf version
 - HEADER_TOPOLOGY: cpu topology
 - HEADER_EVENT_DESC: full event description (attrs)
 - HEADER_CPUID: easy-to-parse low level CPU identication

The small granularity for the entries is to make it easier to extend
without breaking backward compatiblity. Many entries are provided as
ASCII strings.

Perf report/script have been modified to print the basic information as
easy-to-parse ASCII strings. Extended information about CPU and NUMA
topology may be requested with the -I option.

Thanks to David Ahern for reviewing and testing the many versions of
this patch.

Jiri Olsa f57b05ed53 perf report: Use properly build_id kernel binaries
If we bring the recorded perf data together with kernel binary from another
machine using:

	on server A:
	perf archive

	on server B:
	tar xjvf perf.data.tar.bz2 -C ~/.debug

the build_id kernel dso is not properly recognized during the "perf report"
command on server B.

The reason is, that build_id dsos are added during the session initialization,
while the kernel maps are created during the sample event processing.

The machine__create_kernel_maps functions ends up creating new dso object for
kernel, but it does not check if we already have one added by build_id
processing.

Also the build_id reading ABI quirk added in commit:

 - commit b25114817a
perf build-id: Add quirk to deal with perf.data file format breakage

populates the "struct build_id_event::pid" with 0, which
is later interpreted as DEFAULT_GUEST_KERNEL_ID.

This is not always correct, so it's better to guess the pid
value based on the "struct build_id_event::header::misc" value.

- Tested with data generated on x86 kernel version v2.6.34
and reported back on x86_64 current kernel.
- Not tested for guest kernel case.

Note the problem stays for PERF_RECORD_MMAP events recorded by perf that
does not use proper pid (HOST_KERNEL_ID/DEFAULT_GUEST_KERNEL_ID). They are
misinterpreted within the current perf code. Probably there's not much we
can do about that.

David Ahern eda3913bb7 perf tools: Fix endian conversion reading event attr from file header
The perf_event_attr struct has two __u32's at the top and
they need to be swapped individually.

With this change I was able to analyze a perf.data collected in a
32-bit PPC VM on an x86 system. I tested both 32-bit and 64-bit
binaries for the Intel analysis side; both read the PPC perf.data
file correctly.

Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo ec80fde746 perf symbols: Handle /proc/sys/kernel/kptr_restrict
Perf uses /proc/modules to figure out where kernel modules are loaded.

With the advent of kptr_restrict, non root users get zeroes for all module
start addresses.

So check if kptr_restrict is non zero and don't generate the syntethic
PERF_RECORD_MMAP events for them.

Warn the user about it in perf record and in perf report.

In perf report the reference relocation symbol being zero means that
kptr_restrict was set, thus /proc/kallsyms has only zeroed addresses, so don't
use it to fixup symbol addresses when using a valid kallsyms (in the buildid
cache) or vmlinux (in the vmlinux path) build-id located automatically or
specified by the user.

Provide an explanation about it in 'perf report' if kernel samples were taken,
checking if a suitable vmlinux or kallsyms was found/specified.

Restricted /proc/kallsyms don't go to the buildid cache anymore.

Example:

 [acme@emilia ~]$ perf record -F 100000 sleep 1

WARNING: Kernel address maps (/proc/{kallsyms,modules}) are restricted, check
 /proc/sys/kernel/kptr_restrict.

Samples in kernel functions may not be resolved if a suitable vmlinux file is
not found in the buildid cache or in the vmlinux path.

Samples in kernel modules won't be resolved at all.

If some relocation was applied (e.g. kexec) symbols may be misresolved even
with a suitable vmlinux or kallsyms file.

[ perf record: Woken up 1 times to write data ]

check /proc/sys/kernel/kptr_restrict before running 'perf record'.

Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo b25114817a perf build-id: Add quirk to deal with perf.data file format breakage
The a1645ce1 changeset:

"perf: 'perf kvm' tool for monitoring guest performance from host"

Added a field to struct build_id_event that broke the file format.

Since the kernel build-id is the first entry, process the table using
the old format if the well known '[kernel.kallsyms]' string for the
kernel build-id has the first 4 characters chopped off (where the pid_t
sits).

Lin Ming 7ee235efe5 perf symbols: Avoid resolving [kernel.kallsyms] to real path for buildid cache
kallsyms has a virtual file name [kernel.kallsyms]. Currently, it can't
be added to buildid cache successfully because the code
(build_id_cache__add_s) tries to resolve [kernel.kallsyms] to a real
absolute pathname and that fails.

Fixes it by not resolving it and just use the name [kernel.kallsyms].
So dir ~/.debug/[kernel.kallsyms] is created.

Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo e248de331a perf tools: Improve support for sessions with multiple events
By creating an perf_evlist out of the attributes in the perf.data file
header, so that we can use evlists and evsels when reading recorded
sessions in addition to when we record sessions.

More work is needed to allow tools to allow the user to select which
events are wanted when browsing sessions, be it just one or a subset of
them, aggregated or showed at the same time but with different
indications on the UI to allow seeing workloads thru different views at
the same time.

But the overall goal/trend is to more uniformly use evsels and evlists.

GCC 4.6.0 in Fedora rawhide turned up some compile errors in tools/perf
due to the -Werror=unused-but-set-variable flag.

I've gone through and annotated some of the assignments that had side

In a few cases, we were assigning something useful, but not using it in
later parts of the function.

Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo 640c03ce83 perf session: Parse sample earlier
At perf_session__process_event, so that we reduce the number of lines in eache
tool sample processing routine that now receives a sample_data pointer already
parsed.

This will also be useful in the next patch, where we'll allow sample the
identity fields in MMAP, FORK, EXIT, etc, when it will be possible to see (cpu,
timestamp) just after before every event.

Also validate callchains in perf_session__process_event, i.e. as early as
possible, and keep a counter of the number of events discarded due to invalid
callchains, warning the user about it if it happens.

There is an assumption that was kept that all events have the same sample_type,
that will be dealt with in the future, when this preexisting limitation will be
removed.

Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo baa2f6cedb perf record: Add option to disable collecting build-ids
Collecting build-ids for long running sessions may take a long time
because it needs to traverse the whole just collected perf.data stream
of events, marking the DSOs that had hits and then looking for the
.note.gnu.build-id ELF section.

For things like the 'trace' tool that records and right away consumes
the data on systems where its unlikely that the DSOs being monitored
will change while 'trace' runs, it is desirable to remove build id
collection, so add a -B/--no-buildid option to perf record to allow such
use case.

Longer term we'll avoid all this if we, at DSO load time, in the kernel,
take advantage of this slow code path to collect the build-id and stash
it somewhere, so that we can insert it in the PERF_RECORD_MMAP event.

A persistent option to do this already exists via the perfconfig file,
simply do:

[buildid]
dir = /dev/null

This patch provides a way to suppress builid cache updates on a per-run
basis. It addds a new option, -N, to perf record. Buildids are still
generated in the perf.data file.

Stephane Eranian 45de34bbe3 perf buildid: add perfconfig option to specify buildid cache dir
This patch adds the ability to specify an alternate directory to store the
buildid cache (buildids, copy of binaries). By default, it is hardcoded to
$HOME/.debug. This directory contains immutable data. The layout of the
directory is such that no conflicts in filenames are possible. A modification
in a file, yields a different buildid and thus a different location in the
subdir hierarchy.

You may want to put the buildid cache elsewhere because of disk space
limitation or simply to share the cache between users. It is also useful for
remote collect vs. local analysis of profiles.

This patch adds a new config option to the perfconfig file. Under the tag
'buildid', there is a dir option. For instance, if you have:

$ cat /etc/perfconfig
[buildid]
dir = /var/cache/perf-buildid

All buildids and binaries are be saved in the directory specified. The perf
record, buildid-list, buildid-cache, report, annotate, and archive commands
will it to pull information out.

The option can be set in the system-wide perfconfig file or in the
$HOME/.perfconfig file.

Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo f869097e88 perf session: Make read_build_id routines look at the host_machine too
The changes made to support host and guest machines in a session, that
started when the 'perf kvm' tool was introduced ended up introducing a
bug where the host_machine was not having its DSOs traversed for
build-id processing.

Fix it by moving some methods to the right classes and considering the
host_machine when processing build-ids.

Anton Blanchard 02bf60aad7 perf: Fix performance issue with perf report
On a large machine we spend a lot of time in perf_header__find_attr when
running perf report.

If we are parsing a file without PERF_SAMPLE_ID then for each sample we call
perf_header__find_attr and loop through all counter IDs, never finding a match.
As the machine gets larger there are more per cpu counters and we spend an
awful lot of time in there.

The patch below initialises each sample id to -1ULL and checks for this in
perf_header__find_attr. We may need to do something more intelligent eventually
(eg a hash lookup from counter id to attr) but this at least fixes the most
common usage of perf report.

Tom Zanussi 63e0c7715a perf: record TRACE_INFO only if using tracepoints and SAMPLE_RAW
The current perf code implicitly assumes SAMPLE_RAW means tracepoints
are being used, but doesn't check for that. It happily records the
TRACE_INFO even if SAMPLE_RAW is used without tracepoints, but when the
perf data is read it won't go any further when it finds TRACE_INFO but
no tracepoints, and displays misleading errors.

This adds a check for both in perf-record, and won't record TRACE_INFO
unless both are true. This at least allows perf report -D to dump raw
events, and avoids triggering a misleading error condition in perf
trace. It doesn't actually enable the non-tracepoint raw events to be
displayed in perf trace, since perf trace currently only deals with
tracepoint events.

Tom Zanussi 454c407ec1 perf: add perf-inject builtin
Currently, perf 'live mode' writes build-ids at the end of the
session, which isn't actually useful for processing live mode events.

What would be better would be to have the build-ids sent before any of
the samples that reference them, which can be done by processing the
event stream and retrieving the build-ids on the first hit. Doing
that in perf-record itself, however, is off-limits.

This patch introduces perf-inject, which does the same job while
leaving perf-record untouched. Normal mode perf still records the
build-ids at the end of the session as it should, but for live mode,
perf-inject can be injected in between the record and report steps
e.g.:

perf record -o - ./hackbench 10 | perf inject -v -b | perf report -v -i -

perf-inject reads a perf-record event stream and repipes it to stdout.
At any point the processing code can inject other events into the
event stream - in this case build-ids (-b option) are read and
injected as needed into the event stream.

Build-ids are just the first user of perf-inject - potentially
anything that needs userspace processing to augment the trace stream
with additional information could make use of this facility.

Tom Zanussi 789688faef perf/live: don't synthesize build ids at the end of a live mode trace
It doesn't really make sense to record the build ids at the end of a
live mode session - live mode samples need that information during the
trace rather than at the end.

Leave event__synthesize_build_id() in place, however; we'll still be
using that to synthesize build ids in a more timely fashion in a
future patch.

Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo 23346f21b2 perf tools: Rename "kernel_info" to "machine"
struct kernel_info and kerninfo__ are too vague, what they really
describe are machines, virtual ones or hosts.

There are more changes to introduce helpers to shorten function calls
and to make more clear what is really being done, but I left that for
subsequent patches.
