Ville Syrjälä f1e1c2129b drm/i915: Don't clobber the GTT when it's within stolen memory
On most gen2-4 platforms the GTT can be (or maybe always is?)
inside the stolen memory region. If that's the case, reduce the
size of the stolen memory appropriately to make make sure we
don't clobber the GTT.

Ben Widawsky 5e59f7175f drm/i915: Try harder to get FBC
The GEN FBC unit provides the ability to set a low pass on frames it
attempts to compress. If a frame is less than a certain amount
compressibility (2:1, 4:1) it will not bother. This allows the driver to
reduce the size it requests out of stolen memory.

Unluckily, a few months ago, Ville actually began using this feature for
framebuffers that are 16bpp (not sure why not 8bpp). In those cases, we
are already using this mechanism for a different purpose, and so we can
only achieve one further level of compression (2:1 -> 4:1)

FBC GEN1, ie. pre-G45 is ignored.

The cleverness of the patch is Art's. The bugs are mine.

We are already using the size to determine whether or not to free the

Daniel Vetter fcc9fe1a5a drm/i915: restrict vt-d stolen memory workaround to pre-gen8
We want future generations to at least attempt to use all features, so
restrict the stolen memory disabling when vt-d is enabled to the
latest generation we have reports for. Which is a HSW per the original

Also once we get a bit a hold of some of the mysterious framebuffer in

Daniel Vetter d8ccba8663 drm/i915: grab a pages pin count for preallocate stolen
But only when we indeed set up a gtt mapping. We need this since the
vma also holds a pages_pin_count, on top of the unconditional

This should avoid a pages_pin_count underrun when cleaning up
framebuffers objects taken over from the BIOS.

Daniel Vetter e656a6cba0 drm/i915: inline vma_create into lookup_or_create_vma
In the execbuf code we don't clean up any vmas which ended up not
getting bound for code simplicity. To make sure that we don't end up
creating multiple vma for the same vm kill the somewhat dangerous
vma_create function and inline it into lookup_or_create.

This is just a safety measure to prevent surprises in the future.

Also update the somewhat confused comment in the execbuf code and
clarify what kind of magic is going on with a new one.

Ben Widawsky ca191b1313 drm/i915: mm_list is per VMA
formerly: "drm/i915: Create VMAs (part 5) - move mm_list"

The mm_list is used for the active/inactive LRUs. Since those LRUs are
per address space, the link should be per VMx .

Because we'll only ever have 1 VMA before this point, it's not incorrect
to defer this change until this point in the patch series, and doing it
here makes the change much easier to understand.

Shamelessly manipulated out of Daniel:
"active/inactive stuff is used by eviction when we run out of address
space, so needs to be per-vma and per-address space. Bound/unbound otoh
is used by the shrinker which only cares about the amount of memory used
and not one bit about in which address space this memory is all used in.
Of course to actual kick out an object we need to unbind it from every
address space, but for that we have the per-object list of vmas."

Daniel Vetter cb54b53ada Merge commit 'Merge branch 'drm-fixes' of git://people.freedesktop.org/~airlied/linux'
This backmerges Linus' merge commit of the latest drm-fixes pull:

commit 549f3a1218
Merge: 42577ca 058ca4a

    Merge branch 'drm-fixes' of git://people.freedesktop.org/~airlied/linux

We've accrued a few too many conflicts, but the real reason is that I
want to merge the 100% solution for Haswell concurrent registers
writes into drm-intel-next. But that depends upon the 90% bandaid
merged into -fixes:

Author: Chris Wilson <chris@chris-wilson.co.uk>
Date: Fri Jul 19 20:36:51 2013 +0100

drm/i915: Serialize almost all register access

Also, we can roll up on accrued conflicts.

Usually I'd backmerge a tagged -rc, but I want to get this done before
heading off to vacations next week ;-)

Conflicts:

	drivers/gpu/drm/i915/i915_gem.c

So I made the mistake of missing that the desktop and mobile chipsets

David Herrmann 89c8233f82 drm/gem: simplify object initialization
drm_gem_object_init() and drm_gem_private_object_init() do exactly the
same (except for shmem alloc) so make the first use the latter to reduce
code duplication.

Also drop the return code from drm_gem_private_object_init(). It seems
unlikely that we will extend it any time soon so no reason to keep it
around. This simplifies code paths in drivers, too.

Last but not least, fix gma500 to call drm_gem_object_release() before
freeing objects that were allocated via drm_gem_private_object_init().
That isn't actually necessary for now, but might be in the future.

Ben Widawsky 2f63315692 drm/i915: Create VMAs
Formerly: "drm/i915: Create VMAs (part 1)"

In a previous patch, the notion of a VM was introduced. A VMA describes
an area of part of the VM address space. A VMA is similar to the concept
in the linux mm. However, instead of representing regular memory, a VMA
is backed by a GEM BO. There may be many VMAs for a given object, one
for each VM the object is to be used in. This may occur through flink,
dma-buf, or a number of other transient states.

Currently the code depends on only 1 VMA per object, for the global GTT
(and aliasing PPGTT). The following patches will address this and make
the rest of the infrastructure more suited

v2: s/i915_obj/i915_gem_obj (Chris)

v3: Only move an object to the now global unbound list if there are no
more VMAs for the object which are bound into a VM (ie. the list is
empty).

Shamelessly manipulated out of Daniel :-)
"When moving the lists around explain that the active/inactive stuff is
used by eviction when we run out of address space, so needs to be
per-vma and per-address space. Bound/unbound otoh is used by the
shrinker which only cares about the amount of memory used and not one
bit about in which address space this memory is all used in. Of course
to actual kick out an object we need to unbind it from every address
space, but for that we have the per-object list of vmas."

v2: Leave the bound list as a global one. (Chris, indirectly)

Ben Widawsky c6cfb32567 drm/i915: Embed drm_mm_node in i915 gem obj
Embedding the node in the obj is more natural in the transition to VMAs
which will also have embedded nodes. This change also helps transition
away from put_block to remove node.

Though it's quite an uncommon occurrence, it's somewhat convenient to not
fail at bind time because we cannot allocate the node. Though in
practice there are other allocations (like the request structure) which
would probably make this point not terribly useful.

Quoting Daniel:
Note that the only difference between put_block and remove_node is
that the former fills up the preallocation cache. Which we don't need
anyway and hence is just wasted space.

For an upcoming patch where we introduce the i915 VMA, it's ideal to
have the drm_mm_node as part of the VMA struct (ie. it's pre-allocated).
Part of the conversion to VMAs is to kill off obj->gtt_space. Doing this
will break a bunch of code, but amongst them are 2 callers of
drm_mm_create_block(), both related to stolen memory.

It also allows us to embed the drm_mm_node into the object currently

As well as delaying the allocation from driver initialisation until the
first use of FBC, we also return the stolen block after we finish using
it - allowing greater flexibility in our usage of stolen space. A side
effect of this is that we can then attempt to allocate only the required
amount of space (with a little slack to reduce reallocation rate and
avoid fragmentation).

Chris Wilson e12a2d53ae drm/i915: Fix detection of base of stolen memory
The routine to query the base of stolen memory was using the wrong
registers and the wrong encodings on virtually every platform.

It was not until the G33 refresh, that a PCI config register was
introduced that explicitly said where the stolen memory was. Prior to
865G there was not even a register that said where the end of usable
low memory was and where the stolen memory began (or ended depending
upon chipset). Before then, one has to look at the BIOS memory maps to
find the Top of Memory. Alas that is not exported by arch/x86 and so we
have to resort to disabling stolen memory on gen2 for the time being.

Then SandyBridge enlarged the PCI register to a full 32-bits and change
the encoding of the address, so even though we happened to be querying
the right register, we read the wrong bits and ended up using address 0
for our stolen data, i.e. notably FBC.

David Howells 4126d5d61f UAPI: (Scripted) Remove redundant DRM UAPI header #inclusions from drivers/gpu/.
Remove redundant DRM UAPI header #inclusions from drivers/gpu/.

Remove redundant #inclusions of core DRM UAPI headers (drm.h, drm_mode.h and
drm_sarea.h). They are now #included via drmP.h and drm_crtc.h via a preceding
patch.

Without this patch and the patch to make include the UAPI headers from the core
headers, after the UAPI split, the DRM C sources cannot find these UAPI headers
because the DRM code relies on specific -I flags to make #include "..." work
on headers in include/drm/ - but that does not work after the UAPI split without
adding more -I flags.

Chris Wilson 9797fbfbcf drm/i915: Split the stolen handling for GEM out of i915_dma.c
We slightly modify the initialisation sequence to move the
initialisation of the memory managers earlier and in particular before
probing outputs and detecting any existing output configuration. This is
essential if we wish to track preallocated objects and preserve them
whilst initialising GEM.
