Cornelia Huck 0b352fd680 virtio: allow to fail setting status
virtio-1 allow setting of the FEATURES_OK status bit to fail if
the negotiated feature bits are inconsistent: let's fail
virtio_set_status() in that case and update virtio-ccw to post an
error to the guest.

Paolo Bonzini b2dfd71c48 memory: prepare for multiple bits in the dirty log mask
When the dirty log mask will also cover other bits than DIRTY_MEMORY_VGA,
some listeners may be interested in the overall zero/non-zero value of
the dirty log mask; others may be interested in the value of single bits.

For this reason, always call log_start/log_stop if bits have respectively
appeared or disappeared, and pass the old and new values of the dirty log
mask so that listeners can distinguish the kinds of change.

For example, KVM checks if dirty logging used to be completely disabled
(in log_start) or is now completely disabled (in log_stop). On the
other hand, Xen has to check manually if DIRTY_MEMORY_VGA changed,
since that is the only bit it cares about.

Paolo Bonzini 2d1a35bef0 memory: differentiate memory_region_is_logging and memory_region_get_dirty_log_mask
For now memory regions only track DIRTY_MEMORY_VGA individually, but
this will change soon. To support this, split memory_region_is_logging
in two functions: one that returns a given bit from dirty_log_mask,
and one that returns the entire mask. memory_region_is_logging gets an
extra parameter so that the compiler flags misuse.

While VGA-specific users (including the Xen listener!) will want to keep
checking that bit, KVM and vhost check for "any bit except migration"
(because migration is handled via the global start/stop listener
callbacks).

Jason Wang 309750fad5 vhost: logs sharing
Currently we allocate one vhost log per vhost device. This is sub
optimal when:

- Guest has several device with vhost as backend
- Guest has multiqueue devices

In the above cases, we can avoid the memory allocation by sharing a
single vhost log among all the vhost devices. This is done through:

- Introducing a new vhost_log structure with refcnt inside.
- Using a global pointer to vhost_log structure that will be used. And
  introduce helper to get the log with expected log size and helper to
- drop the refcnt to the old log.
- Each vhost device still keep track of a pointer to the log that was
  used.

With above, if no resize happens, all vhost device will share a single
vhost log. During resize, a new vhost_log structure will be allocated
and made for the global pointer. And each vhost devices will drop the
refcnt to the old log.

Tested by doing scp during migration for a 2 queues virtio-net-pci.

On migration a full 64bit guest_features field is sent if one of the

Shannon Zhao da2f84d127 virtio-scsi: Move DEFINE_VIRTIO_SCSI_FEATURES to virtio-scsi
So far virtio-scsi-device can't expose host features to guest while
using virtio-mmio because it doesn't set DEFINE_VIRTIO_SCSI_FEATURES on

The host features belong to the backends while virtio-scsi-pci,
virtio-scsi-s390 and virtio-scsi-ccw set the DEFINE_VIRTIO_SCSI_FEATURES
on transports. But they already have the ability to forward property
accesses to the backend child. So if we move the host features to
backends, it doesn't break the backwards compatibility for them and
make host features work while using virtio-mmio.

zhanghailiang 463756d031 virtio-balloon: Fix balloon not working correctly when hotplug memory
When do memory balloon, it takes the 'ram_size' as the VM's current ram size,
But 'ram_size' is the startup configured ram size, it does not take into
account the hotplugged memory.

As a result, the balloon result will be confused.
Steps to reproduce:
(1)Start VM: qemu -m size=1024,slots=4,maxmem=8G
(2)In VM: #free -m : 1024M
(3)qmp balloon 512M
(4)In VM: #free -m : 512M
(5)hotplug pc-dimm 1G
(6)In VM: #free -m : 1512M
(7)qmp balloon 256M
(8)In VM: #free -m :1256M
We expect the VM's available ram size to be 256M after 'qmp balloon 256M'
command, but VM's real available ram size is 1256M.

For "qmp balloon" is not performance critical code, we use function
'get_current_ram_size' to get VM's current ram size.

Cornelia Huck b0e5d90ebc dataplane: endianness-aware accesses
The vring.c code currently assumes that guest and host endianness match,
which is not true for a number of cases:

- emulating targets with a different endianness than the host
- bi-endian targets, where the correct endianness depends on the virtio
  device
- upcoming support for the virtio-1 standard mandates little-endian
  accesses even for big-endian targets and hosts

Make sure to use accessors that depend on the virtio device.

Note that dataplane now needs to be built per-target.

Alexander Graf 8118f0950f migration: Append JSON description of migration stream
One of the annoyances of the current migration format is the fact that
it's not self-describing. In fact, it's not properly describing at all.
Some code randomly scattered throughout QEMU elaborates roughly how to
read and write a stream of bytes.

We discussed an idea during KVM Forum 2013 to add a JSON description of
the migration protocol itself to the migration stream. This patch
adds a section after the VM_END migration end marker that contains
description data on what the device sections of the stream are composed of.

This approach is backwards compatible with any QEMU version reading the
stream, because QEMU just stops reading after the VM_END marker and ignores
any data following it.

With an additional external program this allows us to decipher the
contents of any migration stream and hopefully make migration bugs easier
to track down.

David Gibson db12451dec Fix for crash after migration in virtio-rng on bi-endian targets
VirtIO devices now remember which endianness they're operating in in order
to support targets which may have guests of either endianness, such as
powerpc. This endianness state is transferred in a subsection of the
virtio device's information.

With virtio-rng this can lead to an abort after a loadvm hitting the
assert() in virtio_is_big_endian(). This can be reproduced by doing a
migrate and load from file on a bi-endian target with a virtio-rng device.
The actual guest state isn't particularly important to triggering this.

The cause is that virtio_rng_load_device() calls virtio_rng_process() which
accesses the ring and thus needs the endianness. However,
virtio_rng_process() is called via virtio_load() before it loads the
subsections. Essentially the ->load callback in VirtioDeviceClass should
only be used for actually reading the device state from the stream, not for
post-load re-initialization.

This patch fixes the bug by moving the virtio_rng_process() after the call
to virtio_load(). Better yet would be to convert virtio to use vmsd and
have the virtio_rng_process() as a post_load callback, but that's a bigger
project for another day.

This is bugfix, and should be considered for the 2.2 branch.

Bin Wu a3614c65cf hw/virtio/vring/event_idx: fix the vring_avail_event error
The event idx in virtio is an effective way to reduce the number of
interrupts and exits of the guest. When the guest puts an request
into the virtio ring, it doesn't exit immediately to inform the
backend. Instead, the guest checks the "avail" event idx to determine
the notification.

In virtqueue_pop, when a request is poped, the current avail event
idx should be set to the number of vq->last_avail_idx.

Michael S. Tsirkin 68a27b208a virtio-pci: fix migration for pci bus master
Current support for bus master (clearing OK bit) together with the need to
support guests which do not enable PCI bus mastering, leads to extra state in
VIRTIO_PCI_FLAG_BUS_MASTER_BUG bit, which isn't robust in case of cross-version
migration for the case when guests use the device before setting DRIVER_OK.

Rip out this code, and replace it:
-   Modern QEMU doesn't need VIRTIO_PCI_FLAG_BUS_MASTER_BUG
    so just drop it for latest machine type.
- For compat machine types, set PCI_COMMAND if DRIVER_OK
    is set.

As this is needed for 2.1 for both pc and ppc, move PC_COMPAT macros from pc.h

Device models should access their block backends only through the

Just four uses of BlockDriverState are left:

* The Xen paravirtual block device backend (xen_disk.c) opens images

  should go through qmp_blockdev_add() instead.

* Device model "usb-storage" prompts for keys. No other device model
  does, and this one probably shouldn't do it, either.

* ide_issue_trim_cb() uses bdrv_aio_discard() instead of
  blk_aio_discard() because it fishes its backend out of a BlockAIOCB,

Luiz Capitulino 1f9296b51a virtio-balloon: fix integer overflow in memory stats feature
When a QMP client changes the polling interval time by setting
the guest-stats-polling-interval property, the interval value
is stored and manipulated as an int64_t variable.

However, the balloon_stats_change_timer() function, which is
used to set the actual timer with the interval value, takes
an int instead, causing an overflow for big interval values.

This commit fix this bug by changing balloon_stats_change_timer()
to take an int64_t and also it limits the polling interval value
to UINT_MAX to avoid other kinds of overflow.

Michael S. Tsirkin 4d43d3f3c8 virtio-pci: fix migration for pci bus master
Current support for bus master (clearing OK bit)
together with the need to support guests which do not
enable PCI bus mastering, leads to extra state in
VIRTIO_PCI_FLAG_BUS_MASTER_BUG bit, which isn't robust
in case of cross-version migration for the case when
guests use the device before setting DRIVER_OK.

Rip out VIRTIO_PCI_FLAG_BUS_MASTER_BUG and implement a simpler
work-around: treat clearing of PCI_COMMAND as a virtio reset. Old
guests never touch this bit so they will work.

As reset clears device status, DRIVER and MASTER bits are
now in sync, so we can fix up cross-version migration simply
by synchronising them, without need to detect a buggy guest
explicitly.

Drop tracking VIRTIO_PCI_FLAG_BUS_MASTER_BUG completely.

As reset makes the device quiescent, in the future we'll be able to drop
checking OK bit in a bunch of places.

Michael S. Tsirkin 9e8e8c4865 Revert "virtio: don't call device on !vm_running"
This reverts commit a1bc7b827e422e1ff065640d8ec5347c4aadfcd8.
    virtio: don't call device on !vm_running
It turns out that virtio net assumes that vm_running
is updated before device status callback in many places,
so this change leads to asserts.
Previous commit fixes the root issue that motivated
a1bc7b827e422e1ff065640d8ec5347c4aadfcd8 differently,
so there's no longer a need for this change.

In the future, we might be able to drop checking vm_running
completely, and check vm state directly.

Jason Wang cd7d1d26b0 vhost_net: start/stop guest notifiers properly
commit a9f98bb5eb "vhost: multiqueue
support" changed the order of stopping the device. Previously
vhost_dev_stop would disable backend and only afterwards, unset guest
notifiers. We now unset guest notifiers while vhost is still
active. This can lose interrupts causing guest networking to fail. In
particular, this has been observed during migration.

To fix this, several other changes are needed:
- remove the hdev->started assertion in vhost.c since we may want to
start the guest notifiers before vhost starts and stop the guest
notifiers after vhost is stopped.
- introduce the vhost_net_set_vq_index() and call it before setting
guest notifiers. This is to guarantee vhost_net has the correct
virtqueue index when setting guest notifiers.

John Snow 713e8a1022 virtio-rng: Add human-readable error message for negative max-bytes parameter
If a negative integer is used for the max_bytes parameter, QEMU currently
calls abort() and leaves behind a core dump. This patch replaces the
abort with a simple error message to make the reason for the termination
clearer. This also ensures device-hotplug with invalid input doesn't
cause qemu to quit.

There is an underlying insufficiency in the parameter parsing code of QEMU
that renders it unable to reject negative values for unsigned properties,
thus the error message "a non-negative integer below 2^63" is the most
user-friendly and correct message we can give until the underlying
insufficiency is corrected.

Stefan Hajnoczi f897bf751f virtio-blk: embed VirtQueueElement in VirtIOBlockReq
The memory allocation between hw/block/virtio-blk.c,
hw/block/dataplane/virtio-blk.c, and hw/virtio/dataplane/vring.c is
messy. Structs are allocated in different files than they are freed in.

Paolo Bonzini 8b81bb3b06 virtio-pci: fix MSI memory region use after free
After memory region QOMification QEMU is stricter in detecting
wrong usage of the memory region API. Here it detected a
memory_region_destroy done before the corresponding
memory_region_del_subregion; the memory_region_destroy is
done by msix_uninit_exclusive_bar, the memory_region_del_subregion
is done by the PCI core's pci_unregister_io_regions before
pc->exit is called.

The problem was introduced by
commit 06a1307379
    virtio-pci: add device_unplugged callback
As noted in that commit log, virtio device kick callbacks need to be
stopped before generic virtio is cleaned up. This is because these are
notifications from pci proxy to the generic virtio device so they need
to be stopped in the unplug call before the virtio device is unrealized.
However interrupts are notifications from the virtio device to
the pci proxy so they need to stay around while the device
is realized.

The memory API misuse caused an assertion when hot-unplugging virtio
devices. Using the API correctly fixes the assertion.

Stefan Hajnoczi 467b3f33e9 virtio-blk: replace x-iothread with iothread link property
Up until now -device virtio-blk-pci,x-iothread=<id> was used to assign
an IOThread. This was a temporary solution while we cleaned up QOM link
properties.

This patch switches over to a QOM link property since it is now possible
to restrict the setter to unrealized instances and automatically unref
the IOThread when the virtio-blk-pci device is freed.

Since the "iothread" property is a QOM property and not a qdev property,
we must alias it explicitly for virtio-blk-pci, as well as CCW and

Greg Kurz 616a655219 virtio: add endian-ambivalent support to VirtIODevice
Some CPU families can dynamically change their endianness. This means we
can have little endian ppc or big endian arm guests for example. This has
an impact on legacy virtio data structures since they are target endian.
We hence introduce a new property to track the endianness of each virtio
device. It is reasonnably assumed that endianness won't change while the
device is in use : we hence capture the device endianness when it gets
reset.

We migrate this property in a subsection, after the device descriptor. This
means the load code must not rely on it until it is restored. As a consequence,
the vring sanity checks had to be moved after the call to vmstate_load_state().
We enforce paranoia by poisoning the property at the begining of virtio_load().

Greg Kurz 6b321a3df5 virtio: add subsections to the migration stream
There is a need to add some more fields to VirtIODevice that should be
migrated (broken status, endianness). The problem is that we do not
want to break compatibility while adding a new feature... This issue has
been addressed in the generic VMState code with the use of optional
subsections. As a *temporary* alternative to port the whole virtio
migration code to VMState, this patch mimics a similar subsectionning
ability for virtio, using the VMState code.

Since each virtio device is streamed in its own section, the idea is to
stream subsections between the end of the device section and the start
of the next sections. This allows an older QEMU to complain and exit
when fed with subsections:

 - other fileds in VhostUserMemoryRegion struct are not changed, as
   they are all needed for usermode app implementation
 - region data is not taken from ram_list.blocks anymore, instead we
   use region data which is alredy calculated for use in vhost-net
 - Now multiple regions can have same FD and user applicaton can call
   mmap() multiple times with the same FD but with different offset
   (user needs to take care for offset page alignment)

Dr. David Alan Gilbert 2f5732e964 Allow mismatched virtio config-len
Commit 'virtio: validate config_len on load' restricted config_len
loaded from the wire to match the config_len that the device had.

Unfortunately, there are cases where this isn't true, the one
we found it on was the wce addition in virtio-blk.

Allow mismatched config-lengths:
   *) If the version on the wire is shorter then fine
   *) If the version on the wire is longer, load what we have space
      for and skip the rest.

(This is mst@redhat.com's rework of what I originally posted)

Nikolay Nikolaev 5f6f6664bf Add vhost-user as a vhost backend.
The initialization takes a chardev backed by a unix domain socket.
It should implement qemu_fe_set_msgfds in order to be able to pass
file descriptors to the remote process.

Each ioctl request of vhost-kernel has a vhost-user message equivalent,
which is sent over the control socket.

The general approach is to copy the data from the supplied argument
pointer to a designated field in the message. If a file descriptor is
to be passed it will be placed in the fds array for inclusion in
the sendmsg control header.

VHOST_SET_MEM_TABLE ignores the supplied vhost_memory structure and scans
the global ram_list for ram blocks with a valid fd field set. This would
be set when the '-object memory-file' option with share=on property is used.

Markus Armbruster 297a3646c2 qapi: Replace uncommon use of the error API by the common one
We commonly use the error API like this:

    err = NULL;
    foo(..., &err);
    if (err) {
        goto out;
    }
    bar(..., &err);

Every error source is checked separately. The second function is only
called when the first one succeeds. Both functions are free to pass
their argument to error_set(). Because error_set() asserts no error
has been set, this effectively means they must not be called with an
error set.

The qapi-generated code uses the error API differently:

    // *errp was initialized to NULL somewhere up the call chain
    frob(..., errp);
    gnat(..., errp);

Errors accumulate in *errp: first error wins, subsequent errors get
dropped. To make this work, the second function does nothing when
called with an error set. Requires non-null errp, or else the second
function can't see the first one fail.

This usage has also bled into visitor tests, and two device model
object property getters rtc_get_date() and balloon_stats_get_all().

With the "accumulate" technique, you need fewer error checks in
callers, and buy that with an error check in every callee. Can be
nice.

However, mixing the two techniques is confusing. You can't use the
"accumulate" technique with functions designed for the "check
separately" technique. You can use the "check separately" technique
with functions designed for the "accumulate" technique, but then
error_set() can't catch you setting an error more than once.

Standardize on the "check separately" technique for now, because it's
overwhelmingly prevalent.

Markus Armbruster 65cd9064e1 qom: Clean up fragile use of error_is_set() in set() methods
Using error_is_set(ERRP) to find out whether a function failed is
either wrong, fragile, or unnecessarily opaque. It's wrong when ERRP
may be null, because errors go undetected when it is. It's fragile
when proving ERRP non-null involves a non-local argument. Else, it's
unnecessarily opaque (see commit 84d18f0).

I guess the error_is_set(errp) in the ObjectProperty set() methods are
merely fragile right now, because I can't find a call chain that
passes a null errp argument.

Make the code more robust and more obviously correct: receive the
error in a local variable, then propagate it through the parameter.

Stefan Hajnoczi 9561fda8d9 qom: Make QOM link property unref optional
Some object_property_add_link() callers expect property deletion to
unref the link property object. Other callers expect to manage the
refcount themselves. The former are currently broken and therefore leak
the link property object.

This patch adds a flags argument to object_property_add_link() so the
caller can specify which refcount behavior they require. The new
OBJ_PROP_LINK_UNREF_ON_RELEASE flag causes the link pointer to be
unreferenced when the property is deleted.

This fixes refcount leaks in qdev.c, xilinx_axidma.c, xilinx_axienet.c,
s390-virtio-bus.c, virtio-pci.c, virtio-rng.c, and ui/console.c.

Rationale for refcount behavior:

 * hw/core/qdev.c
   - bus children are explicitly unreferenced, don't interfere
   - parent_bus is essentially a read-only property that doesn't hold a
     refcount, don't unref
   - hotplug_handler is leaked, do unref

 * hw/dma/xilinx_axidma.c
   - rx stream "dma" links are set using set_link, therefore they
     need unref
   - tx streams are set using set_link, therefore they need unref

 * hw/net/xilinx_axienet.c
   - same reasoning as hw/dma/xilinx_axidma.c

 * hw/pcmcia/pxa2xx.c
   - pxa2xx bypasses set_link and therefore does not use refcounts

 * hw/s390x/s390-virtio-bus.c
 * hw/virtio/virtio-pci.c
 * hw/virtio/virtio-rng.c
 * ui/console.c
   - set_link is used and there is no explicit unref, do unref

Paolo Bonzini 06a1307379 virtio-pci: add device_unplugged callback
This fixes a crash in hot-unplug of virtio-pci devices behind a PCIe
switch. The crash happens because the ioeventfd is still set whent the
child is destroyed (destruction happens in postorder). Then the proxy
tries to unset to ioeventfd, but the virtqueue structure that holds the
EventNotifier has been trashed in the meanwhile. kvm_set_ioeventfd_pio
does not expect failure and aborts.

The fix is simply to move parts of uninitialization to a new
device_unplugged callback, which is called before the child is destroyed.

Paolo Bonzini 5e96f5d2f8 virtio-bus: cleanup plug/unplug interface
Right now we have these pairs:

- virtio_bus_plug_device/virtio_bus_destroy_device.  The first
  takes a VirtIODevice, the second takes a VirtioBusState

- device_plugged/device_unplug callbacks in the VirtioBusClass
  (here it's just the naming that is inconsistent)

- virtio_bus_destroy_device is not called by anyone (and since
  it calls qdev_free, it would be called by the proxies---but
  then the callback is useless since the proxies can do whatever
  they want before calling virtio_bus_destroy_device)

And there is a k->init but no k->exit, hence virtio_device_exit is
overwritten by subclasses (except virtio-9p). This cleans it up by:

- renaming the device_unplug callback to device_unplugged

- renaming virtio_bus_plug_device to virtio_bus_device_plugged,
  matching the callback name

- renaming virtio_bus_destroy_device to virtio_bus_device_unplugged,
  removing the qdev_free, making it take a VirtIODevice and calling it
  from virtio_device_exit

- adding a k->exit callback

virtio_device_exit is still overwritten, the next patches will fix that.

Stefan Hajnoczi 02a5c4c974 qdev: Drop misleading qdev_free() function
The qdev_free() function name is misleading since all the function does
is unlink the device from its parent. The device is not necessarily
freed.

The device will be freed when its QObject refcount reaches zero. It is
usual for the parent (bus) to hold the final reference but there are
cases where something else holds a reference so "free" is a misleading
name.

Call object_unparent(obj) directly instead of having a qdev wrapper
function.

commit 62c96360ae
    virtio-pci: fix level interrupts
only helps systems without irqfd: on systems with irqfd support we
passed in flag requesting irqfd even when msix is disabled.

As a result, for level interrupts we didn't install an fd handler so
unmasking an fd had no effect.

Peter Maydell 6ce69d1c77 virtio: Support transports which can specify the vring alignment
Support virtio transports which can specify the vring alignment
(ie where the guest communicates this to the host) by providing
a new virtio_queue_set_align() function. (The default alignment
remains as before.)

Transports which wish to make use of this must set the
has_variable_vring_alignment field in their VirtioBusClass
struct to true; they can then change the alignment via
virtio_queue_set_align().

Load the virtio.c state into vring.c when we start dataplane mode and
vice versa when stopping dataplane mode. This patch makes it possible
to start and stop dataplane any time while the guest is running.

This will eventually allow us to go back to QEMU main loop for
bdrv_drain_all() and live migration. In the meantime, this patch makes
the dataplane lifecycle more robust but should make no visible
difference. It may be useful in the virtio-net dataplane effort.

Amos Kong bbfa18fca4 qdev: fix get_fw_dev_path to support to add nothing to fw_dev_path
Recent virtio refactoring in QEMU made virtio-bus become the parent bus
of scsi-bus, and virtio-bus doesn't have get_fw_dev_path implementation,
typename will be added to fw_dev_path by default, the new fw_dev_path
could not be identified by seabios. It causes that bootindex parameter
of scsi device doesn't work.

This patch implements get_fw_dev_path() in BusClass, it will be called
if bus doesn't implement the method, tyename will be added to
fw_dev_path. If the implemented method returns NULL, nothing will be
added to fw_dev_path.

It also implements virtio_bus_get_fw_dev_path() to return NULL. Then
QEMU will still pass original style of fw_dev_path to seabios.

Luiz Capitulino dcc6ceffc0 virtio-balloon: fix integer overflow in BALLOON_CHANGE QMP event
Because dev->actual is uint32_t, the expression 'dev->actual <<
VIRTIO_BALLOON_PFN_SHIFT' is truncated to 32 bits. This overflows when
dev->actual >= 1048576.

To reproduce:

 1. Start a VM with a QMP socket and 5G of RAM
 2. Connect to the QMP socket, negotiate capabilities and issue:

   { "execute":"balloon", "arguments": { "value": 1073741824 } }

 3. Watch for BALLOON_CHANGE QMP events, the last one will incorretly be:

   { "timestamp": { "seconds": 1366228965, "microseconds": 245466 },
     "event": "BALLOON_CHANGE", "data": { "actual": 5368709120 } }

To fix it this commit casts it to ram_addr_t, which is ram_size's type.

Nicholas Bellinger af60314291 vhost: Add vhost_commit callback for SeaBIOS ROM region re-mapping
This patch follows MST's recommendation to move checks for
vhost_verify_ring_mappings() -> cpu_physical_memory_map() operations
from MemoryListener->region_[add,del]() -> vhost_set_memory() into
final MemoryListener->commit() -> vhost_commit() callback.

It addresses the case where virtio-scsi vq ioport RAM re-mapping
to read-only SeaBIOS ROM triggers a cpu_physical_memory_map()
NIL MemoryRegionSection pointer failure.

Also save vhost_dev->mem_changed_[start,end]_addr values in
vhost_set_memory() for final ranges_overlap checks. (Thanks Paolo!)
