sscanf is relatively loose (tolerate) on some invalid formats that we
should fail instead of generating a wrong uuid structure, like with
whitespaces and short strings.
Add and use a helper function to first check the format.

Update all qemu_uuid users as well, especially get rid of the duplicated
low level g_strdup_printf, sscanf and snprintf calls with QEMU UUID API.
Since qemu_uuid_parse is quite tangled with qemu_uuid, its switching to
QemuUUID is done here too to keep everything in sync and avoid code
churn.

A number of different places across the code base use CONFIG_UUID. Some
of them are soft dependency, some are not built if libuuid is not
available, some come with dummy fallback, some throws runtime error.
It is hard to maintain, and hard to reason for users.
Since UUID is a simple standard with only a small number of operations,
it is cleaner to have a central support in libqemuutil. This patch adds
qemu_uuid_* functions that all uuid users in the code base can
rely on. Except for qemu_uuid_generate which is new code, all other
functions are just copy from existing fallbacks from other files.
Note that qemu_uuid_parse is moved without updating the function
signature to use QemuUUID, to keep this patch simple.

Extend the current module interface to allow for block drivers to be
loaded dynamically on request. The only block drivers that can be
converted into modules are the drivers that don't perform any init
operation except for registering themselves.
In addition, only the protocol drivers are being modularized, as they
are the only ones which see significant performance benefits. The format
drivers do not generally link to external libraries, so modularizing
them is of no benefit from a performance perspective.
All the necessary module information is located in a new structure found
in module_block.h
This spoils the purpose of 5505e8b76f (block/dmg: make it modular).
Before this patch, if module build is enabled, block-dmg.so is linked to
libbz2, whereas the main binary is not. In downstream, theoretically, it
means only the qemu-block-extra package depends on libbz2, while the
main QEMU package needn't to. With this patch, we (temporarily) change
the case so that the main QEMU depends on libbz2 again.

If giving QEMU a log arg which asks to enable multiple
different trace event patterns such as
$QEMU -d trace:qio*,trace:qcrypto*
the parser will then invoke
trace_enable_events("qio*,trace:qcrypto*")
trace_enable_events("qcrypto*")
as when finding a 'trace:' prefix, it is not clever
enough to strip anything after the next comma. As
a result only the last 'trace:' match ever works.
Rather than trying to be more clever with parsing the
command line arg in place, simplify the code by
using g_strsplit to break it into individual strings
on ','. These resulting pieces can be directly used
without worrying about trailing data from the next
option.

For ppc64le, gcc6 does extremely poorly with the Altivec code.
Moreover, on POWER7 and POWER8, a hand-optimized Altivec version
turns out to be no faster than the revised integer version, and
therefore not worth the effort.

The revised integer version is 4 times faster than the neon version
on an AppliedMicro Mustang. Even with hand scheduling and additional
unrolling I cannot make any neon version run as fast as the integer.

A coroutine that takes a lock must also release it again. If the
coroutine terminates without having released all its locks, it's buggy
and we'll probably run into a deadlock sooner or later. Make sure that
we don't get such cases.

In cases of deadlocks, knowing who holds a given CoMutex is really
helpful for debugging. Keeping the information around doesn't cost much
and allows us to add another assertion to keep the code correct, so

Rather than rely on recursion during the middle of register allocation,
lower indirect registers to loads and stores off the indirect base into
plain temps.
For an x86_64 host, with sufficient registers, this results in identical
code, modulo the actual register assignments.
For an i686 host, with insufficient registers, this means that temps can
be (temporarily) spilled to the stack in order to satisfy an allocation.
This as opposed to the possibility of not being able to spill, to allocate
a register for the indirect base, in order to perform a spill.

Setting FOO_max to a value that is lower than FOO does not make
sense, and it produces odd results depending on the value of
FOO_max_length. Although the user should not set that configuration
in the first place it's better to reject it explicitly.

In cases where iov_copy() is passed with zero 'bytes' argument and a
non-zero 'offset' argument, nothing gets copied - as expected.
However no copy iterations are performed, so 'offset' is left
unaltered, leading to the final assert(offset == 0) to fail.
Instead, change the loop condition to continue as long as 'offset || bytes',
similar to other iov_* functions.
This ensures 'offset' gets zeroed (even if no actual copy is made),
unless it is beyond end of source iov - which is asserted.

So far, QHT functions assume that the passed qht has previously been
initialized--otherwise they segfault.
This patch makes an exception for qht_statistics_init, with the goal
of simplifying calling code. For instance, qht_statistics_init is
called from the 'info jit' dump, and given that under KVM the TB qht
is never initialized, we get a segfault. Thus, instead of complicating
the 'info jit' code with additional checks, let's allow passing an
uninitialized qht to qht_statistics_init.
While at it, add a test for this to test-qht.
Before the patch (for $ qemu -enable-kvm [...]):

When adding hostmem backend at runtime, QEMU might exit with error:
"os_mem_prealloc: Insufficient free host memory pages available to allocate guest RAM"
It happens due to os_mem_prealloc() not handling errors gracefully.
Fix it by passing errp argument so that os_mem_prealloc() could
report error to callers and undo performed allocation when
os_mem_prealloc() fails.

In practice the entry argument is always known at creation time, and
it is confusing that sometimes qemu_coroutine_enter is used with a
non-NULL argument to re-enter a coroutine (this happens in
block/sheepdog.c and tests/test-coroutine.c). So pass the opaque value
at creation time, for consistency with e.g. aio_bh_new.

CoQueue do not need to remove any element but the head of the list;
processing is always strictly FIFO. Therefore, the simpler singly-linked

Making each output visitor provide its own output collection
function was the only remaining reason for exposing visitor
sub-types to the rest of the code base. Add a polymorphic
visit_complete() function which is a no-op for input visitors,
and which populates an opaque pointer for output visitors. For
maximum type-safety, also add a parameter to the output visitor
constructors with a type-correct version of the output pointer,
and assert that the two uses match.
This approach was considered superior to either passing the
output parameter only during construction (action at a distance
during visit_free() feels awkward) or only during visit_complete()
(defeating type safety makes it easier to use incorrectly).
Most callers were function-local, and therefore a mechanical
conversion; the testsuite was a bit trickier, but the previous
cleanup patch minimized the churn here.
The visit_complete() function may be called at most once; doing
so lets us use transfer semantics rather than duplication or
ref-count semantics to get the just-built output back to the
caller, even though it means our behavior is not idempotent.

Range represents a range as follows. Member @start is the inclusive
lower bound, member @end is the exclusive upper bound. Zero @end is
special: if @start is also zero, the range is empty, else @end is to
be interpreted as 2^64. No other empty ranges may occur.
The range [0,2^64-1] cannot be represented. If you try to create it
with range_set_bounds1(), you get the empty range instead. If you try
to create it with range_set_bounds() or range_extend(), assertions
fail. Before range_set_bounds() existed, the open-coded creation
usually got you the empty range instead. Open deathtrap.
Moreover, the code dealing with the janus-faced @end is too clever by
half.
Dumb this down to a more pedestrian representation: members @lob and
@upb are inclusive lower and upper bounds. The empty range is encoded
as @lob = 1, @upb = 0.

Range encodes an integer interval [a,b] as { begin = a, end = b + 1 },
where a \in [0,2^64-1] and b \in [1,2^64]. Thus, zero end is to be
interpreted as 2^64.
The implementation of -dfilter (commit 3514552) uses Range
differently: it encodes [a,b] as { begin = a, end = b }. The code
works, but it contradicts the specification of Range in range.h.
Switch to the specified representation. Since it can't represent
[0,UINT64_MAX], we have to reject that now. Add a test for it.
While we're rejecting anyway: observe that we reject -dfilter LOB..UPB
where LOB > UPB when UPB is zero, but happily create an empty Range
when it isn't. Reject it then, too, and add a test for it.
While there, add a positive test for the problematic upper bound
UINT64_MAX.

Commit 7f8f9ef1 introduced the ability to store a list of
integers as a sorted list of ranges, but when merging ranges,
it leaks one or more ranges. It was also using range_get_last()
incorrectly within range_compare() (a range is a start/end pair,
but range_get_last() is for start/len pairs), and will also
mishandle a range ending in UINT64_MAX (remember, we document
that no range covers 2**64 bytes, but that ranges that end on
UINT64_MAX have end < begin).
The whole merge algorithm was rather complex, and included
unnecessary passes over data within glib functions, and enough
indirection to make it hard to easily plug the data leaks.
Since we are already hard-coding things to a list of ranges,
just rewrite the thing to open-code the traversal and
comparisons, by making the range_compare() helper function give
us an answer that is easier to use, at which point we avoid the
need to pass any callbacks to g_list_*(). Then by reusing
range_extend() instead of duplicating effort with range_merge(),
we cover the corner cases correctly.
Drop the now-unused range_merge() and ranges_can_merge().
Doing this lets test-string-{input,output}-visitor pass under
valgrind without leaks.

Calling our function g_list_insert_sorted_merged is a misnomer,
since we are NOT writing a glib function. Furthermore, we are
making every caller pass the same comparator function of
range_merge(): any caller that would try otherwise would break
in weird ways since our internal call to ranges_can_merge() is
hard-coded to operate only on ranges, rather than paying
attention to the caller's comparator.
Better is to fix things so that callers don't have to care about
our internal comparator, by picking a function name and updating
the parameter type away from a gratuitous use of void*, to make
it obvious that we are operating specifically on a list of ranges
and not a generic list. Plus, refactoring the code here will
make it easier to plug a memory leak in the next patch.
range_compare() is now internal only, and moves to the .c file.

g_list_insert_sorted_merged() is rather large to be an inline
function; move it to its own file. range_merge() and
ranges_can_merge() can likewise move, as they are only used
internally. Also, it becomes obvious that the condition within
range_merge() is already satisfied by its caller, and that the
return value is not used.
The diffstat is misleading, because of the copyright boilerplate.

Use socket_*() functions from include/qemu/sockets.h instead of
listen()/bind()/connect()/parse_host_port(). socket_*() fucntions are
QAPI based and this patch performs this api conversion since
everything will be using QAPI based sockets in the future. Also add a
helper function socket_address_to_string() in util/qemu-sockets.c
which returns the string representation of socket address. Thetask was
listed on http://wiki.qemu.org/BiteSizedTasks page.

When qemu_set_log_filename() detects an invalid file name, it reports
an error, closes the log file (if any), and starts logging to stderr
(unless daemonized or nothing is being logged).
This is wrong. Asking for an invalid log file on the command line
should be fatal. Asking for one in the monitor should fail without
messing up an existing logfile.
Fix by converting qemu_set_log_filename() to Error. Pass it
&error_fatal, except for hmp_logfile report errors.
This also permits testing without a subprocess, so do that.

This is a fast, scalable chained hash table with optional auto-resizing, allowing
reads that are concurrent with reads, and reads/writes that are concurrent
with writes to separate buckets.
A hash table with these features will be necessary for the scalability
of the ongoing MTTCG work; before those changes arrive we can already
benefit from the single-threaded speedup that qht also provides.

Sometimes it is useful to have a quick histogram to represent a certain
distribution -- for example, when investigating a performance regression
in a hash table due to inadequate hashing.
The appended allows us to easily represent a distribution using Unicode
characters. Further, the data structure keeping track of the distribution
is so simple that obtaining its values for off-line processing is trivial.

In a similar vein to commit ee2bdc33c9
("throttle: refuse bps_max/iops_max without bps/iops") it is likely that
the user made a configuration error if iops-size has been set but no
iops limit has been set.
Print an error message so the user can check their throttling
configuration. They should either remove iops-size if they don't want
any throttling or specify one of iops-total, iops-read, or iops-write.

Currently if an application initiates an outgoing migration,
it may or may not, get an error reported back on failure. If
the error occurs synchronously to the 'migrate' command
execution, the client app will see the error message. This
is the case for DNS lookup failures. If the error occurs
asynchronously to the monitor command though, the error
will be thrown away and the client left guessing about
what went wrong. This is the case for failure to connect
to the TCP server (eg due to wrong port, or firewall
rules, or other similar errors).
In the future we'll be adding more scope for errors to
happen asynchronously with the TLS protocol handshake.
TLS errors are hard to diagnose even when they are well
reported, so discarding errors entirely will make it
impossible to debug TLS connection problems.
Management apps which do migration are already using
'query-migrate' / 'info migrate' to check up on progress
of background migration operations and to see their end
status. This is a fine place to also include the error
message when things go wrong.
This patch thus adds an 'error-desc' field to the
MigrationInfo struct, which will be populated when
the 'status' is set to 'failed':

While in the anonymous ram case we already take care of the right alignment
such an alignment gurantee does not exist for file backed ram allocation.
Instead, pagesize is used for alignment. On s390 this is not enough for gmap,
as we need to satisfy an alignment up to segments.

The following uses of a QMP input visitor should be strict
(that is, excess keys in QDict input should be flagged if not
converted to QAPI):
- Testsuite code unrelated to explicitly testing non-strict
mode (test-qmp-commands, test-visitor-serialization); since
we want more code to be strict by default, having more tests
of strict mode doesn't hurt
- Code used for cloning QAPI objects (replay-input.c,
qemu-sockets.c); we are reparsing a QObject just barely
produced by the qmp output visitor and which therefore should
not have any garbage, so while it is extra work to be strict,
it validates that our clone is correct [note that a later patch
series will simplify these two uses by creating an actual
clone visitor that is much more efficient than a
generate/reparse cycle]
- qmp_object_add(), which calls into user_creatable_add_type().
Since command line parsing for '-object' uses the same
user_creatable_add_type() through the OptsVisitor, and that is
always strict, we want to ensure that any nested dictionaries
would be treated the same in QMP and from the command line (I
don't actually know if such nested dictionaries exist). Note
that on this code change, strictness only matters for nested
dictionaries (if even possible), since we already flag excess
input at the top level during an earlier object_property_set()
on an unknown key, whether from QemuOpts:

The only remaining uses of non-strict input visits are:
- QMP 'qom-set' (which eventually executes
object_property_set_qobject()) - mark it as something to revisit
in the future (I didn't want to spend any more time on this patch
auditing if we have any QOM dictionary properties that might be
impacted, and couldn't easily prove whether this code path is
shared with anything else).
- test-qmp-input-visitor: explicit tests of non-strict mode. If
we later get rid of users that don't need strictness, then this
test should be merged with test-qmp-input-strict

Rather than having two separate ways to create a QMP input
visitor, where the safer approach has the more verbose name,
it is better to consolidate things into a single function
where the caller must explicitly choose whether to be strict
or to ignore excess input. This patch is the strictly
mechanical conversion; the next patch will then audit which
uses can be made stricter.

qemu_opts_foreach() pushes and pops a Location with automatic storage
duration. Except it fails to pop when @func() returns non-zero.
cur_loc then points to unused stack space, and will most likely get
clobbered in short order.
Clobbered cur_loc can make loc_pop() and error_print_loc() crash or
report bogus locations.
Affects several qemu command line options as well as qemu-img,
qemu-io, qemu-nbd -object, and blkdebug's configuration file.
Broken in commit a4c7367, v2.4.0.
Reproducer:

be, i.e. unused stack space. With optimization, this Location doesn't

Without optimization, it does get clobbered in a way that makes
error_report_err() report no location.

For KVM to use Transparent Huge Pages (THP) we have to ensure that the
alignment of the userspace address of the KVM memory slot and the IPA
that the guest sees for a memory region have the same offset from the 2M
huge page size boundary.
One way to achieve this is to always align the IPA region at a 2M
boundary and ensure that the mmap alignment is also at 2M.
Unfortunately, we were only doing this for __arm__, not for __aarch64__,
so add this simple condition.
This fixes a performance regression using KVM/ARM on AArch64 platforms
that showed a performance penalty of more than 50%, introduced by the
following commit:
9fac18f (oslib: allocate PROT_NONE pages on top of RAM, 2015-09-10)
We were only lucky before the above commit, because we were allocating
large regions and naturally getting a 2M alignment on those allocations
then.

qemu_hexdump() in util/hexdump.c has been changed to give also include a
ascii dump of the buffer. Also, calls to hex_dump() in net/net.c have
been replaced with calls to qemu_hexdump(). This takes care of two misc
BiteSized Tasks.

The FreeBSD header files define the AI_V4MAPPED but its
implementation of getaddrinfo() always returns an error
when that flag is set. eg
address resolution failed for localhost:9000: Invalid value for ai_flags
There are also reports of the same problem on OS-X 10.6
Since AI_V4MAPPED is not critical functionality, if we
get an EAI_BADFLAGS error then just retry without the
AI_V4MAPPED flag set. Use a static var to cache this
status so we don't have to retry on every single call.
Also remove its use from the test suite since it serves
no useful purpose there.

When debugging stuff that occurs over several forks it would be useful
not to keep overwriting the one logfile you've set-up. This allows a
simple %d to be included once in the logfile parameter which is
substituted with getpid().
As the test cases involve checking user output they need
g_test_trap_subprocess() support. As a result they are currently skipped
on Travis builds due to the older glib involved.

When debugging big programs or system emulation sometimes you want both
the verbosity of cpu,exec et all but don't want to generate lots of logs
for unneeded stuff. This patch adds a new option -dfilter which allows
you to specify interesting address ranges in the form:
-dfilter 0x8000..0x8fff,0xffffffc000080000+0x200,...
Then logging code can use the new qemu_log_in_addr_range() function to
decide if it will output logging information for the given range.

Make qemu_log_mask() a macro which only calls the function to
do the actual work if the logging is enabled. This avoids making
a function call in possible fast paths where logging is disabled.

qemu-common.h should only be included by .c files. Its file comment
explains why: "No header file should depend on qemu-common.h, as this
would easily lead to circular header dependencies."
qemu/iov.h includes qemu-common.h for QEMUIOVector stuff. Move all
that to qemu/iov.h and drop the ill-advised include. Include
qemu/iov.h where the QEMUIOVector stuff is now missing.

Commit 57cb38b included qapi/error.h into qemu/osdep.h to get the
Error typedef. Since then, we've moved to include qemu/osdep.h
everywhere. Its file comment explains: "To avoid getting into
possible circular include dependencies, this file should not include
any other QEMU headers, with the exceptions of config-host.h,
compiler.h, os-posix.h and os-win32.h, all of which are doing a
similar job to this file and are under similar constraints."
qapi/error.h doesn't do a similar job, and it doesn't adhere to
similar constraints: it includes qapi-types.h. That's in excess of
100KiB of crap most .c files don't actually need.
Add the typedef to qemu/typedefs.h, and include that instead of
qapi/error.h. Include qapi/error.h in .c files that need it and don't
get it now. Include qapi-types.h in qom/object.h for uint16List.
Update scripts/clean-includes accordingly. Update it further to match
reality: replace config.h by config-target.h, add sysemu/os-posix.h,
sysemu/os-win32.h. Update the list of includes in the qemu/osdep.h
comment quoted above similarly.
This reduces the number of objects depending on qapi/error.h from "all
of them" to less than a third. Unfortunately, the number depending on
qapi-types.h shrinks only a little. More work is needed for that one.

Event notifiers are designed for eventfd(2). They can fall back to
pipes, but according to Paolo, event_notifier_init_fd() really
requires the real thing, and should therefore be under #ifdef
CONFIG_EVENTFD. Do that.
Its only user is ivshmem, which is currently CONFIG_POSIX. Narrow it
to CONFIG_EVENTFD.

Simple unions were carrying a special case that hid their 'data'
QMP member from the resulting C struct, via the hack method
QAPISchemaObjectTypeVariant.simple_union_type(). But by using
the work we started by unboxing flat union and alternate
branches, coupled with the ability to visit the members of an
implicit type, we can now expose the simple union's implicit
type in qapi-types.h:

Doing this removes asymmetry between QAPI's QMP side and its
C side (both sides now expose 'data'), and means that the
treatment of a simple union as sugar for a flat union is now
equivalent in both languages (previously the two approaches used
a different layer of dereferencing, where the simple union could
be converted to a flat union with equivalent C layout but
different {} on the wire, or to an equivalent QMP wire form
but with different C representation). Using the implicit type
also lets us get rid of the simple_union_type() hack.
Of course, now all clients of simple unions have to adjust from
using su->u.member to using su->u.member.data; while this touches
a number of files in the tree, some earlier cleanup patches
helped minimize the change to the initialization of a temporary
variable rather than every single member access. The generated
qapi-visit.c code is also affected by the layout change:

When &error_abort is passed in, the error reporting code
will print the current error message and then abort() the
process. Unfortunately at the time it aborts, we've not
yet appended the errno detail. This makes debugging certain
problems significantly harder as the log is incomplete.

Now that QEMU wraps the Win32 sockets methods to automatically
set errno upon failure, there is no reason for callers to use
the socket_error() method. They can rely on accessing errno
even on Win32. Remove all use of socket_error() from general
code, leaving it as a static method in oslib-win32.c only.

The windows socket functions look identical to the normal POSIX
sockets functions, but instead of setting errno, the caller needs
to call WSAGetLastError(). QEMU has tried to deal with this
incompatibility by defining a socket_error() method that callers
must use that abstracts the difference between WSAGetLastError()
and errno.
This approach is somewhat error prone though - many callers of
the sockets functions are just using errno directly because it
is easy to forget the need use a QEMU specific wrapper. It is
not always immediately obvious that a particular function will
in fact call into Windows sockets functions, so the dev may not
even realize they need to use socket_error().
This introduces an alternative approach to portability inspired
by the way GNULIB fixes portability problems. We use a macro to
redefine the original socket function names to refer to a QEMU
wrapper function. The wrapper function calls the original Win32
sockets method and then sets errno from the WSAGetLastError()
value.
Thus all code can simply call the normal POSIX sockets APIs are
have standard errno reporting on error, even on Windows. This
makes the socket_error() method obsolete.
We also bring closesocket & ioctlsocket into this approach. Even
though they are non-standard Win32 names, we can't wrap the normal
close/ioctl methods since there's no reliable way to distinguish
between a file descriptor and HANDLE in Win32.

Historically QEMU has had a socket_error() macro that was
defined to map to WSASocketError(). The os-win32.h header
file would define errno constants that mapped to the
WSA error constants. This worked fine with Mingw32 since
its header files never defined any errno values, nor did
it even provide an errno.h. So callers of socket_error()
could match on traditional Exxxx constants and it would
all "just work".
With Mingw64 though, things work rather differently. First
there is an errno.h file which defines all the traditional
errno constants you'd expect from a UNIX platform. There
is then a winerror.h which defined the WSA error constants.
Crucially the WSAExxxx errno values in winerror.h do not
match the Exxxx errno values in error.h.
If QEMU had only imported winerror.h it would still work,
but the qemu/osdep.h file unconditionally imports errno.h.
So callers of socket_error() will get now WSAExxxx values
back and compare them to the Exxx constants. This will
always fail silently at runtime.
To solve this QEMU needs to stop assuming the WSAExxxx
constant values match the Exxx constant values. Thus the
socket_error() macro is turned into a small function that
re-maps WSAExxxx values into Exxx.

buffer_find_nonzero_offset() is a hot function during live migration.
Now it use SSE2 instructions for optimization. For platform supports
AVX2 instructions, use AVX2 instructions for optimization can help
to improve the performance of buffer_find_nonzero_offset() about 30%
comparing to SSE2.
Live migration can be faster with this optimization, the test result
shows that for an 8GiB RAM idle guest just boots, this patch can help
to shorten the total live migration time about 6%.
This patch use the ifunc mechanism to select the proper function when
running, for platform supports AVX2, execute the AVX2 instructions,
else, execute the original instructions.

Commit 96c33a4 ("log: Redirect stderr to logfile if deamonized",
2016-02-22) wanted to move stderr of a daemonized QEMU to the file
specified with -D.
However, if -D was not passed, the patch had the side effect of not
redirecting stderr to /dev/null. This happened because qemu_logfile
was set to stderr rather than the expected value of NULL. The fix
is simply in the "if" condition of do_qemu_set_log; the "if" for
closing the file is also changed to match.

An upcoming patch will alter how simple unions, like SocketAddress,
are laid out, which will impact all lines of the form 'addr->u.XXX'
(expanding it to the longer 'addr->u.XXX.data'). For better
legibility in that patch, and less need for line wrapping, it's better
to use a temporary variable to reduce the effect of a layout change to
just the variable initializations, rather than every reference within
a SocketAddress. Also, take advantage of some C99 initialization where
it makes sense (simplifying g_new0() to g_new()).

With this feature the user can keep performing bursts as defined by

We can currently initialize ThrottleConfig by zeroing all its fields,
but this will change with the new fields to define the length of the
burst periods.
This patch introduces a new throttle_config_init() function and uses it
to replace all memset() calls that initialize ThrottleConfig directly.

There's no need to keep throttle_conflicting(), throttle_is_valid()
and throttle_max_is_missing_limit() as separate functions, so this
patch merges all three into one.
As a consequence, check_throttle_config() becomes redundant and can be
replaced with throttle_is_valid().

The right place for "work around issues with system headers" code
is osdep.h. Move the workaround for OSX's stdlib.h emitting a
deprecation warning for daemon() to that header.
This also fixes a problem where running clean-includes on
oslib-posix.c would erroneously remove the #include <stdlib.h>
from it, breaking the workaround.

memcpy can take a large amount of time for small reads and writes.
For virtio it is a common case that the first iovec can satisfy the
whole read or write. In that case, and if bytes is a constant to
avoid excessive growth of code, inline the first iteration
into the caller.

JSON uses "name":value, but many of our visitor interfaces were
called with visit_type_FOO(v, &value, name, errp). This can be
a bit confusing to have to mentally swap the parameter order to
match JSON order. It's particularly bad for visit_start_struct(),
where the 'name' parameter is smack in the middle of the
otherwise-related group of 'obj, kind, size' parameters! It's
time to do a global swap of the parameter ordering, so that the
'name' parameter is always immediately after the Visitor argument.
Additional reason in favor of the swap: the existing include/qjson.h
prefers listing 'name' first in json_prop_*(), and I have plans to
unify that file with the qapi visitors; listing 'name' first in
qapi will minimize churn to the (admittedly few) qjson.h clients.
Later patches will then fix docs, object.h, visitor-impl.h, and
those clients to match.
Done by first patching scripts/qapi*.py by hand to make generated
files do what I want, then by running the following Coccinelle
script to affect the rest of the code base:

I then had to apply some touchups (Coccinelle insisted on TAB
indentation in visitor.h, and botched the signature of
visit_type_enum() by rewriting 'const char *const strings[]' to

movement of parameters is sufficient to provoke compiler errors
if any callers were missed.

extract_common_blockdev_options() uses qemu_opt_get_number() to parse
the bps/iops numbers to uint64_t, then converts to double and stores in
ThrottleConfig. The actual parsing is done by strtoull() in
parse_option_number(). Negative numbers are wrapped to large positive
ones, and stored.
We used to reject negative numbers since 7d81c1413c, but this regressed
when the option parsing code was changed later. Now fix this again.
This time, define an arbitrary large upper limit (1e15), and check the
values so both negative and impractically big numbers are caught and
reported.

The socket_dgram method accepts a QAPI SocketAddress object
which it then turns into QemuOpts before calling the
inet_dgram_opts helper method. By converting the latter to
use QAPI SocketAddress directly, the QemuOpts conversion
step can be eliminated.
This removes the very last use of QemuOpts from the
sockets code, so the socket_optslist[] array is also
removed.

Instead of simply propagating an error verbatim, we sometimes want to
add to its message, like this:

This is suboptimal, because it loses err's hint (if any). Moreover,
when errp is &error_abort or is subsequently propagated to
&error_abort, the abort message points to the place where we last
added to the error, not to the place where it originated.
To avoid these issues, provide means to add to an error's message in
place:

error_prepend(errp, "Can't frobnicate %s: ", arg);
Likewise, reporting an error like

Since commit 50b7b00, we have error_append_hint() to conveniently
accumulate Error member @hint. error_report_err() prints it with a
newline appended. Consequently, users of error_append_hint() need to
know whether theirs is the final line of the hint to decide whether it
needs a newline. Not a nice interface.
Change error_report_err() to print just the hint, and the (still few)
users of error_append_hint() to add the required newline.

The standard glib provided g_base64_decode doesn't provide any
kind of sensible error checking on its input. Add a QEMU custom
wrapper qbase64_decode which can be used with untrustworthy
input that can contain invalid base64 characters, embedded
NUL characters, or not be NUL terminated at all.

Implement a QIOChannel subclass that supports sockets I/O.
The implementation is able to manage a single socket file
descriptor, whether a TCP/UNIX listener, TCP/UNIX connection,
or a UDP datagram. It provides APIs which can listen and
connect either asynchronously or synchronously. Since there
is no asynchronous DNS lookup API available, it uses the
QIOTask helper for spawning a background thread to ensure
non-blocking operation.

Trivial: this array should be allocated to have ID_MAX entries always.
Otherwise if someone were to forget to expand this table, the assertion
in the id generator won't actually trigger; it will read junk data.

Since commit 8561c9244d "exec: allocate PROT_NONE pages on top of
RAM", it is no longer possible to back guest RAM with hugepages on ppc64
hosts:

This is because on ppc64, Linux fixes a page size for a virtual address
at mmap time, so we can't switch a range of memory from anonymous
small pages to hugetlbs with MAP_FIXED.

Detect this and create the PROT_NONE mapping using the same fd.
Naturally, this makes the guard page bigger with hugetlbfs.

getpagesize on Linux returns an int. Fix QEMU's implementation for
Windows to return an int (instead of size_t), too.
This fixes a compiler warning which was introduced recently
(commit 093e3c42).

There are two issues with qemu_hw_version() today:
1) If a machine has hw_version set, the value returned by it is
not very useful, because it is not the actual QEMU version.
2) If a machine does't set hw_version, the return value of
qemu_hw_version() is broken, because it will change when
upgrading QEMU.
For those reasons, using qemu_hw_version() is strongly
discouraged, and should be used only in code that used
QEMU_VERSION in the past and needs to keep compatibility.
To fix (2), instead of making every machine broken by default
unless they set hw_version, make qemu_hw_version() simply return
"2.5+" if qemu_set_hw_version() is not called.

This patch adds two new fields to BlockDeviceTimedStats that track the
average number of pending read and write requests for a block device.
The values are calculated for the period of time defined for that
interval.

This module computes the average of a set of values within a time
window, keeping also track of the minimum and maximum values.
In order to produce more accurate results it works internally by
creating two time windows of the same period, offsetted by half of
that period. Values are accounted on both windows and the data is
always returned from the oldest one.
[Add missing util/replay.o to test-timed-average dependencies to fix the
build.

We have several tests that perform multiple sub-actions that are
expected to fail. Asserting that an error occurred, then clearing
it up to prepare for the next action, turned into enough
boilerplate that it was sometimes forgotten (for example, a number
of tests added to test-qmp-input-visitor.c in d88f5fd leaked err).
Worse, if an error is not reset to NULL, we risk invalidating
later use of that error (passing a non-NULL err into a function
is generally a bad idea). Encapsulate the boilerplate into a
single helper function error_free_or_abort(), and consistently
use it.
The new function is added into error.c for use everywhere,
although it is anticipated that testsuites will be the main
client.

Using access() is a time-of-check/time-of-use race condition. It is
okay to use them to provide better error messages, but that is pretty
much it.
This is not one such case; on the other hand, access() *will* skip
unlink() for a non-existent path, so ignore ENOENT return values from
the unlink() system call.

We have two issues with our qapi union layout:
1) Even though the QMP wire format spells the tag 'type', the
C code spells it 'kind', requiring some hacks in the generator.
2) The C struct uses an anonymous union, which places all tag
values in the same namespace as all non-variant members. This
leads to spurious collisions if a tag value matches a non-variant
member's name.
Make the conversion to the new layout for socket-related code.

Implement memfd_create() fallback if not available in system libc.
memfd_create() is still not included in glibc today, atlhough it's been
available since Linux 3.17 in Oct 2014.
memfd has numerous advantages over traditional shm/mmap for ipc memory
sharing with fd handler, which we are going to make use of for
vhost-user logging memory in following patches.
The next patches are going to introduce helpers to use best practices of
memfd usage and provide some compatibility fallback. memfd.c is thus
temporarily useless and eventually empty if memfd_create() is provided
by the system.

The coroutine files are currently referenced by the block-obj-y
variable. The coroutine functionality though is already used by
more than just the block code. eg migration code uses coroutine
yield. In the future the I/O channel code will also use the
coroutine yield functionality. Since the coroutine code is nicely
self-contained it can be easily built as part of the libqemuutil.a
library, making it widely available.
The headers are also moved into include/qemu, instead of the
include/block directory, since they are now part of the util
codebase, and the impl was never in the block/ directory
either.

When using regular fork() the child process of course inherits
all the parents' signal handlers. If the child then proceeds
to close() any open file descriptors, it may break some of those
registered signal handlers. The child generally does not want to
ever run any of the signal handlers that the parent may have
installed in the short time before it exec's. The parent may also
have blocked various signals which the child process will want
enabled.
This introduces a wrapper qemu_fork() that takes care to sanitize
signal handling across fork. Before forking it blocks all signals
in the parent thread. After fork returns, the parent unblocks the
signals and carries on as usual. The child, however, resets all the
signal handlers back to their defaults before it unblocks signals.
The child process can now exec the binary in a "clean" signal
environment.

If the port in the SocketAddress struct is NULL, it can allow
the kernel to automatically select a free port. This is useful
in particular in unit tests to avoid a race trying to find a
free port to run a test case on.

Multiple sub-systems in QEMU may find it useful to generate IDs
for objects that a user may reference via QMP or HMP. This patch
presents a standardized way to do it, so that automatic ID generation
follows the same rules.
This patch enforces the following rules when generating an ID:
1.) Guarantee no collisions with a user-specified ID
2.) Identify the sub-system the ID belongs to
3.) Guarantee of uniqueness
4.) Spoiling predictability, to avoid creating an assumption
of object ordering and parsing (i.e., we don't want users to think
they can guess the next ID based on prior behavior).
The scheme for this is as follows (no spaces):

The QemuOpts-based code treats "option not set" and "option set
to false" the same way for the ipv4 and ipv6 options, because it
is meant to handle only the ",ipv4" and ",ipv6" substrings in
hand-crafted option parsers.
When converting InetSocketAddress to QemuOpts, however, it is
necessary to handle all three cases (not set, set to true, set
to false). Currently we are not handling all cases correctly.
The rules are:
* if none or both options are absent, leave things as is
* if the single present option is Y, the other should be N.
This can be implemented by leaving things as is, or by setting
the other option to N as done in this patch.
* if the single present option is N, the other should be Y.
This is handled by the "else if" branch of this patch.
This ensures that the ipv4 option has an effect on Windows,
where creating the socket with PF_UNSPEC makes an ipv6
socket. With this patch, ",ipv4" will result in a PF_INET
socket instead.

This inserts a read and write protected page between RAM and QEMU
memory. This makes it harder to exploit QEMU bugs resulting from buffer
overflows in devices using variants of cpu_physical_memory_map,
dma_memory_map etc.

At the moment we first allocate RAM, sometimes more than necessary for
alignment reasons. We then free the extra RAM.
Rework this to avoid the temporary allocation: reserve the
range by mapping it with PROT_NONE, then use just the
necessary range with MAP_FIXED.

The oslib-win32 file currently provides a localtime_r and
gmtime_r replacement unconditionally. Some versions of
Mingw-w64 would provide crude macros for localtime_r/gmtime_r
which QEMU takes care to disable. Latest versions of Mingw-w64
now provide actual functions for localtime_r/gmtime_r, but
with a twist that you have to include unistd.h or pthread.h
before including time.h. By luck some files in QEMU have
such an include order, resulting in compile errors:

This change adds a configure test to see if localtime_r
exits, and only enables the QEMU impl if missing. We also
re-arrange qemu-common.h try attempt to guarantee that all
source files get unistd.h before time.h and thus see the

QemuEvents are used heavily by call_rcu. We do not want them to be slow,
but the current implementation does a kernel call on every invocation
of qemu_event_* and won't cut it.
So, wrap a Win32 manual-reset event with a fast userspace path. The
states and transitions are the same as for the futex and mutex/condvar
implementations, but the slow path is different of course. The idea
is to reset the Win32 event lazily, as part of a test-reset-test-wait
sequence. Such a sequence is, indeed, how QemuEvents are used by
RCU and other subsystems!
The patch includes a formal model of the algorithm.

Commits 7216ae3d and d2828429 disabled some error message hints,
all because a change to use modern error reporting meant that the
hint would be output prior to the actual error. Fix this by making
hints a first-class member of Error.
For example, we are now back to the pleasant:

qemu-system-x86_64: --chardev null,id=,: Parameter 'id' expects an identifier
Identifiers consist of letters, digits, '-', '.', '_', starting with a letter.

The -msg timestamp=on option prepends a timestamp to error messages.
This is useful on stderr where it allows users to identify when an error
was raised.
Timestamps do not make sense on the monitor since error_report() is
called in response to a synchronous monitor command and the user already
knows "when" the command was issued. Additionally, the rest of the
monitor conversation lacks timestamps so the error timestamp cannot be
correlated with other activity.
Only prepend timestamps on stderr. This fixes libvirt's 'drive_del'
processing, which did not expect a timestamp. Other QEMU monitor
clients are probably equally confused by timestamps on monitor error
messages.

This will let us print options in a format that the user would actually
write it on the command line (foo=bar,baz=asd,etc=def), without
prepending a spurious comma at the beginning of the list, or quoting
values unnecessarily. This patch provides the following changes:
* write and id=, if the option has an id
* do not print separator before the first element
* do not quote string arguments
* properly escape commas (,) for QEMU

This is particularly useful when we abort in error_propagate(),
because there the stack backtrace doesn't lead to where the error was
created. Looks like this:

Note: to get this example output, I monkey-patched drive_new() to pass
&error_abort to blockdev_init().
To keep the error handling boiler plate from growing even more, all
error_setFOO() become macros expanding into error_setFOO_internal()
with additional __FILE__, __LINE__, __func__ arguments. Not exactly
pretty, but it works.
The macro trickery breaks down when you take the address of an
error_setFOO(). Fortunately, we do that in just one place: qemu-ga's
Windows VSS provider and requester DLL wants to call
error_setg_win32() through a function pointer "to avoid linking glib
to the DLL". Use error_setg_win32_internal() there. The use of the
function pointer is already wrapped in a macro, so the churn isn't
bad.
Code size increases by some 35KiB for me (0.7%). Tolerable. Could be
less if we passed relative rather than absolute source file names to
the compiler, or forwent reporting __func__.

qga_vss_fsfreeze() casts error_set_win32() from
void (*)(Error **, int, ErrorClass, const char *, ...)
to
void (*)(void **, int, int, const char *, ...)
The result is later called. Since the two types are not compatible,
the call is undefined behavior. It works in practice anyway.
However, there's no real need for trickery here. Clean it up as
follows:
* Declare struct Error, and fix the first parameter.
* Switch to error_setg_win32(). This gets rid of the troublesome
ErrorClass parameter. Requires converting error_setg_win32() from
macro to function, but that's trivially easy, because this is the
only user of error_set_win32().

Linux returns 0 if no conversion was made, while OS X and presumably
the BSDs return EINVAL. The OS X convention rejects more invalid
inputs, so convert to it and adjust the test case.
Windows returns 1 from strtoul and strtoull (instead of -1) for
negative out-of-range input; fix it up.

Since the pow2floor() function is now used in a hot code path,
make it inline; for consistency, provide pow2ceil() as an inline
function too.
Because these functions use ctz64() we have to put the inline
versions into host-utils.h, so they have access to ctz64(),
and move the inline is_power_of_2() along with them.
We then need to include host-utils.h from qemu-common.h so that
the files which use these functions via qemu-common.h still have
access to them.

when creating an image qemu-img enable us specifying the size of the
image using -o size=xx options. But when we specify an invalid size
such as a negtive size then different platform gives different result.
parse_option_size() function in util/qemu-option.c will be called to
parse the size, a cast was called in the function to cast the input
(saved as a double in the function) size to an unsigned int64 value,
when the input is a negtive value or exceeds the maximum of uint64, then
the result is undefined.
According to C99 6.3.1.4, the result of converting a floating point
number to an integer that cannot represent the (integer part of) number
is undefined. And sure enough the results are different on x86 and
s390.
C99 Language spec 6.3.1.4 Real floating and integers:
the result of this assignment/cast is undefined if the float is not
in the open interval (-1, U<type>_MAX+1).

If rcu_(un)register_thread() is called together with synchronize_rcu(),
it will wait for the synchronize_rcu() to finish. But when synchronize_rcu()
waits for some events, we can modify the list registry.
We also use the lock rcu_gp_lock to assume that synchronize_rcu() isn't
executed in more than one thread at the same time. Add a new mutex lock
rcu_sync_lock to assume it and rename rcu_gp_lock to rcu_registry_lock.
Release rcu_registry_lock when synchronize_rcu() waits for some events.

Commit e0cf11f31c ("timer: Use a single

*) Do not use AI_ADDRCONFIG on listening sockets, because this flag
makes it impossible to explicitly listen on '127.0.0.1' if no global
ipv4 address is configured additionally, making this a very
uncomfortable option.
*) Add AI_V4MAPPED hint for connecting sockets.
If your system is globally only connected via ipv6 you often still want
to be able to use '127.0.0.1' and 'localhost' (even if localhost doesn't
also have an ipv6 entry).
For example, PVE - unless explicitly asking for insecure mode - uses
ipv4 loopback addresses with QEMU for live migrations tunneled over SSH.
These fail to start because AI_ADDRCONFIG makes getaddrinfo refuse to
work with '127.0.0.1'.
As for the AI_V4MAPPED flag: glibc uses it by default, and providing
non-0 flags removes it. I think it makes sense to use it.
I also want to point out that glibc explicitly sidesteps POSIX standards
when passing 0 as hints by then assuming both AI_V4MAPPED and
AI_ADDRCONFIG (the latter being a rather weird choice IMO), while
according to POSIX.1-2001 it should be assumed 0. (glibc considers its
choice an improvement.)
Since either AI_CANONNAME or AI_PASSIVE are passed in our cases, glibc's
default flags in turn are disabled again unless explicitly added, which
I do with this patch.

The traditional QMP command handler interface
int qmp_FOO(Monitor *mon, const QDict *params, QObject **ret_data);
doesn't provide for returning an Error object. Instead, the handler
is expected to stash it in the monitor with qerror_report().
When we rebased QMP on top of QAPI, we didn't change this interface.
Instead, commit 776574d introduced "middle mode" as a temporary aid
for converting existing QMP commands to QAPI one by one. More than
three years later, we're still using it.
Middle mode has two effects:
* Instead of the native input marshallers
static void qmp_marshal_input_FOO(QDict *, QObject **, Error **)
it generates input marshallers conforming to the traditional QMP
command handler interface.
* It suppresses generation of code to register them with
qmp_register_command()
This permits giving them internal linkage.
As long as we need qmp-commands.hx, we can't use the registry behind
qmp_register_command(), so the latter has to stay for now.
The former has to go to get rid of qerror_report(). Changing all QMP
commands to fit the QAPI mold in one go was impractical back when we
started, but by now there are just a few stragglers left:
do_qmp_capabilities(), qmp_qom_set(), qmp_qom_get(), qmp_object_add(),
qmp_netdev_add(), do_device_add().
Switch middle mode to generate native input marshallers, and adapt the
stragglers. Simplifies both the monitor code and the stragglers.
Rename do_qmp_capabilities() to qmp_capabilities(), and
do_device_add() to qmp_device_add, because that's how QMP command
handlers are named today.

These macros expand into error class enumeration constant, comma,
string. Unclean. Has been that way since commit 13f59ae.
The error class is always ERROR_CLASS_GENERIC_ERROR since the previous
commit.
Clean up as follows:
* Prepend every use of a QERR_ macro by ERROR_CLASS_GENERIC_ERROR, and
delete it from the QERR_ macro. No change after preprocessing.
* Rewrite error_set(ERROR_CLASS_GENERIC_ERROR, ...) into
error_setg(...). Again, no change after preprocessing.

qerror_report_err() is a transitional interface to help with
converting existing monitor commands to QMP. It should not be used
elsewhere.
The only remaining user in qemu-option.c is qemu_opts_parse(). Is it
used in QMP context? If not, we can simply replace
qerror_report_err() by error_report_err().
The uses in qemu-img.c, qemu-io.c, qemu-nbd.c and under tests/ are
clearly not in QMP context.
The uses in vl.c aren't either, because the only QMP command handlers
there are qmp_query_status() and qmp_query_machines(), and they don't
call it.
Remaining uses:
* drive_def(): Command line -drive and such, HMP drive_add and pci_add
* hmp_chardev_add(): HMP chardev-add
* monitor_parse_command(): HMP core
* tmp_config_parse(): Command line -tpmdev
* net_host_device_add(): HMP host_net_add
* net_client_parse(): Command line -net and -netdev
* qemu_global_option(): Command line -global
* vnc_parse_func(): Command line -display, -vnc, default display, HMP
change, QMP change. Bummer.
* qemu_pci_hot_add_nic(): HMP pci_add
* usb_net_init(): Command line -usbdevice, HMP usb_add
Propagate errors through qemu_opts_parse(). Create a convenience
function qemu_opts_parse_noisily() that passes errors to
error_report_err(). Switch all non-QMP users outside tests to it.
That leaves vnc_parse_func(). Propagate errors through it. Since I'm
touching it anyway, rename it to vnc_parse().

Group throttling will share ThrottleState between multiple bs.
As a consequence the ThrottleState will be accessed by multiple aio
context.
Timers are tied to their aio context so they must go out of the
ThrottleState structure.
This commit paves the way for each bs of a common ThrottleState to
have its own timer.

When the argument is non-zero, qemu_opt_foreach() stops on callback
returning non-zero, and returns that value.
When the argument is zero, it doesn't stop, and returns the callback's
value from the last iteration.
The two callers that pass zero could just as well pass one:
* qemu_spice_init()'s callback add_channel() either returns zero or
exit()s.
* config_write_opts()'s callback config_write_opt() always returns
zero.
Drop the parameter, and always stop.

Use atomic_or() for atomic bitmaps where several threads may set bits at
the same time. This avoids the race condition between threads loading
an element, bitwise ORing, and then storing the element.
When setting all bits in a word we can avoid atomic ops and instead just
use an smp_mb() at the end.
Most bitmap users don't need atomicity so introduce new functions.

The 'socket_optslist' structure does not contain the 'localaddr' and
'localport' options that are parsed in case you are creating a
'connect' type UDP character device.
I've noticed it happening after commit f43e47dbf6
made qemu abort() after seeing the invalid option.
A minimal reproducer for the case is:
$ qemu-system-x86_64 -chardev udp,id=charrng0,host=127.0.0.1,port=1234,localaddr=,localport=1234
qemu-system-x86_64: -chardev udp,id=charrng0,host=127.0.0.1,port=1234,localaddr=,localport=1234: Invalid parameter 'localaddr'
Aborted (core dumped)
Prior to the commit mentioned above the error would be printed but the
value for localaddr and localport was simply ignored. I did not go
through the code to find out when it was broken.
Add the two fields so that the options can again be parsed correctly and
qemu doesn't abort().

The qemu_read_password() method looks for \r to terminate the
reading of the a password. This is what will be seen when
reading the password from a TTY. When scripting though, it is
useful to be able to send the password via a pipe, in which
case we must look for \n to terminate password input.

The qemu-img.c file has a read_password() method impl that is
used to prompt for passwords on the console, with impls for
POSIX and Windows. This will be needed by qemu-io.c too, so
move it into the QEMU osdep/oslib files where it can be shared
without code duplication
