We want to allow inet_twsk_kill() working even if netns
has been dismantled/freed, to get rid of inet_twsk_purge().
This patch adds tw->tw_bslot to cache the bind bucket slot
so that inet_twsk_kill() no longer needs to dereference twsk_net(tw)

When 'ping' changes to use PING socket instead of RAW socket by:
# sysctl -w net.ipv4.ping_group_range="0 100"
the selftests 'router_broadcast.sh' will fail, as such command
# ip vrf exec vrf-h1 ping -I veth0 198.51.100.255 -b
can't receive the response skb by the PING socket. It's caused by mismatch
of sk_bound_dev_if and dif in ping_rcv() when looking up the PING socket,
as dif is vrf-h1 if dif's master was set to vrf-h1.
This patch is to fix this regression by also checking the sk_bound_dev_if
against sdif so that the packets can stil be received even if the socket
is not bound to the vrf device but to the real iif.

During IP fragmentation we sanitize IP options. This means overwriting
options which should not be copied with NOPs. Only the first fragment
has the original, full options.
ip_fraglist_prepare() copies the IP header and options from previous
fragment to the next one. Commit 19c3401a91 ("net: ipv4: place control
buffer handling away from fragmentation iterators") moved sanitizing
options before ip_fraglist_prepare() which means options are sanitized
and then overwritten again with the old values.
Fixing this is not enough, however, nor did the sanitization work
prior to aforementioned commit.
ip_options_fragment() (which does the sanitization) uses ipcb->opt.optlen
for the length of the options. ipcb->opt of fragments is not populated
(it's 0), only the head skb has the state properly built. So even when
called at the right time ip_options_fragment() does nothing. This seems
to date back all the way to v2.5.44 when the fast path for pre-fragmented
skbs had been introduced. Prior to that ip_options_build() would have been
called for every fragment (in fact ever since v2.5.44 the fragmentation
handing in ip_options_build() has been dead code, I'll clean it up in
-next).
In the original patch (see Link) caixf mentions fixing the handling
for fragments other than the second one, but I'm not sure how _any_
fragment could have had their options sanitized with the code
as it stood.
Tested with python (MTU on lo lowered to 1000 to force fragmentation):
import socket
s = socket.socket(socket.AF_INET, socket.SOCK_DGRAM)
s.setsockopt(socket.IPPROTO_IP, socket.IP_OPTIONS,
bytearray([7,4,5,192, 20|0x80,4,1,0]))

net/ipv4/fib_semantics.c uses a hash table (fib_info_laddrhash)
in which fib_sync_down_addr() can locate fib_info
based on IPv4 local address.
This hash table is resized based on total number of
hashed fib_info, but the hash function is only
using the local address.
For hosts having many active network namespaces,
all fib_info for loopback devices (IPv4 address 127.0.0.1)
are hashed into a single bucket, making netns dismantles
very slow.

net/ipv4/fib_semantics.c uses an hash table of 256 slots,
keyed by device ifindexes: fib_info_devhash[DEVINDEX_HASHSIZE]
Problem is that with network namespaces, devices tend
to use the same ifindex.
lo device for instance has a fixed ifindex of one,
for all network namespaces.
This means that hosts with thousands of netns spend
a lot of time looking at some hash buckets with thousands
of elements, notably at netns dismantle.
Simply add a per netns perturbation (net_hash_mix())
to spread elements more uniformely.
Also change fib_devindex_hashfn() to use more entropy.

Completely remove the old code for check_kfunc_call to help it work
with modules, and also the callback itself.
The previous commit adds infrastructure to register all sets and put
them in vmlinux or module BTF, and concatenates all related sets
organized by the hook and the type. Once populated, these sets remain
immutable for the lifetime of the struct btf.
Also, since we don't need the 'owner' module anywhere when doing
check_kfunc_call, drop the 'btf_modp' module parameter from
find_kfunc_desc_btf.

In the past, free_fib_info() was supposed to be called
under RTNL protection.
This eventually was no longer the case.
Instead of enforcing RTNL it seems we simply can
move fib_info_cnt changes to occur when fib_info_lock
is held.
v2: David Laight suggested to update fib_info_cnt
only when an entry is added/deleted to/from the hash table,
as fib_info_cnt is used to make sure hash table size
is optimal.

The return value of BPF_CGROUP_RUN_PROG_INET{4,6}_POST_BIND() in
__inet_bind() is not handled properly. While the return value
is non-zero, it will set inet_saddr and inet_rcv_saddr to 0 and
exit:
err = BPF_CGROUP_RUN_PROG_INET4_POST_BIND(sk);
if (err) {
inet->inet_saddr = inet->inet_rcv_saddr = 0;
goto out_release_sock;
}
Let's take UDP for example and see what will happen. For UDP
socket, it will be added to 'udp_prot.h.udp_table->hash' and
'udp_prot.h.udp_table->hash2' after the sk->sk_prot->get_port()
called success. If 'inet->inet_rcv_saddr' is specified here,
then 'sk' will be in the 'hslot2' of 'hash2' that it don't belong
to (because inet_saddr is changed to 0), and UDP packet received
will not be passed to this sock. If 'inet->inet_rcv_saddr' is not
specified here, the sock will work fine, as it can receive packet
properly, which is wired, as the 'bind()' is already failed.
To undo the get_port() operation, introduce the 'put_port' field
for 'struct proto'. For TCP proto, it is inet_put_port(); For UDP
proto, it is udp_lib_unhash(); For icmp proto, it is
ping_unhash().
Therefore, after sys_bind() fail caused by
BPF_CGROUP_RUN_PROG_INET4_POST_BIND(), it will be unbinded, which
means that it can try to be binded to another port.

Applications can be confused slightly because we do not always return the
same error code as expected, e.g. what the TCP stack normally returns. For
example on a sock err sk->sk_err instead of returning the sock_error we
return EAGAIN. This usually means the application will 'try again'
instead of aborting immediately. Another example, when a shutdown event
is received we should immediately abort instead of waiting for data when
the user provides a timeout.
These tend to not be fatal, applications usually recover, but introduces
bogus errors to the user or introduces unexpected latency. Before
'c5d2177a72a16' we fell back to the TCP stack when no data was available
so we managed to catch many of the cases here, although with the extra
latency cost of calling tcp_msg_wait_data() first.
To fix lets duplicate the error handling in TCP stack into tcp_bpf so
that we get the same error codes.
These were found in our CI tests that run applications against sockmap
and do longer lived testing, at least compared to test_sockmap that
does short-lived ping/pong tests, and in some of our test clusters
we deploy.
Its non-trivial to do these in a shorter form CI tests that would be
appropriate for BPF selftests, but we are looking into it so we can
ensure this keeps working going forward. As a preview one idea is to
pull in the packetdrill testing which catches some of this.

The issue takes place in one error path of clusterip_tg_check(). When
memcmp() returns nonzero, the function simply returns the error code,
forgetting to decrease the reference count of a clusterip_config
object, which is bumped earlier by clusterip_config_find_get(). This
may incur reference count leak.
Fix this issue by decrementing the refcount of the object in specific
error path.

The ipv4_mib_exit_net is called before tcp_sk_exit_batch when a net
namespace is destroyed since tcp_sk_ops is registered befrore
ipv4_mib_ops, which means tcp_sk_ops is in the front of ipv4_mib_ops
in the list of pernet_list. There will be a use-after-free on
net->mib.net_statistics in tw_timer_handler after ipv4_mib_exit_net
if there are some inflight time-wait timers.
This bug is not introduced by commit f2bf415cfe ("mib: add net to
NET_ADD_STATS_BH") since the net_statistics is a global variable
instead of dynamic allocation and freeing. Actually, commit
61a7e26028 ("mib: put net statistics on struct net") introduces
the bug since it put net statistics on struct net and free it when
net namespace is destroyed.
Moving init_ipv4_mibs() to the front of tcp_init() to fix this bug
and replace pr_crit() with panic() since continuing is meaningless
when init_ipv4_mibs() fails.

getting a device reference that will likely be released

We have to track these references or risk a warning if

Note to XFRM maintainers :
Error path in xfrm6_fill_dst() releases the reference,
but does not clear xdst->u.dst.dev, so I wonder
if this could lead to double dev_put() in some cases,
where a dst_release() _is_ called by the callers in their

We can optimize resilient nexthop group replaces by reducing the number of
synchronize_net calls. After commit 1005f19b93 ("net: nexthop: release
IPv6 per-cpu dsts when replacing a nexthop group") we always do a
synchronize_net because we must ensure no new dsts can be created for the
replaced group's removed nexthops, but we already did that when replacing
resilient groups, so if we always call synchronize_net after any group
type replacement we'll take care of both cases and reduce synchronize_net
calls for resilient groups.

The kernel leaks memory when a `fib` rule is present in IPv6 nftables
firewall rules and a suppress_prefix rule is present in the IPv6 routing
rules (used by certain tools such as wg-quick). In such scenarios, every
incoming packet will leak an allocation in `ip6_dst_cache` slab cache.
After some hours of `bpftrace`-ing and source code reading, I tracked
down the issue to ca7a03c417 ("ipv6: do not free rt if
FIB_LOOKUP_NOREF is set on suppress rule").
The problem with that change is that the generic `args->flags` always have
`FIB_LOOKUP_NOREF` set[1][2] but the IPv6-specific flag
`RT6_LOOKUP_F_DST_NOREF` might not be, leading to `fib6_rule_suppress` not
decreasing the refcount when needed.
How to reproduce:
- Add the following nftables rule to a prerouting chain:
meta nfproto ipv6 fib saddr . mark . iif oif missing drop
This can be done with:
sudo nft create table inet test
sudo nft create chain inet test test_chain '{ type filter hook prerouting priority filter + 10; policy accept; }'
sudo nft add rule inet test test_chain meta nfproto ipv6 fib saddr . mark . iif oif missing drop
- Run:
sudo ip -6 rule add table main suppress_prefixlength 0
- Watch `sudo slabtop -o | grep ip6_dst_cache` to see memory usage increase
with every incoming ipv6 packet.
This patch exposes the protocol-specific flags to the protocol
specific `suppress` function, and check the protocol-specific `flags`
argument for RT6_LOOKUP_F_DST_NOREF instead of the generic
FIB_LOOKUP_NOREF when decreasing the refcount, like this.

While testing BIG TCP patch series, I was expecting that TCP_RR workloads
with 80KB requests/answers would send one 80KB TSO packet,
then being received as a single GRO packet.
It turns out this was not happening, and the root cause was that
cubic Hystart ACK train was triggering after a few (2 or 3) rounds of RPC.
Hystart was wrongly setting CWND/SSTHRESH to 30, while my RPC
needed a budget of ~20 segments.
Ideally these TCP_RR flows should not exit slow start.
Cubic Hystart should reset itself at each round, instead of assuming
every TCP flow is a bulk one.
Note that even after this patch, Hystart can still trigger, depending
on scheduling artifacts, but at a higher CWND/SSTHRESH threshold,
keeping optimal TSO packet sizes.

When replacing a nexthop group, we must release the IPv6 per-cpu dsts of
the removed nexthop entries after an RCU grace period because they
contain references to the nexthop's net device and to the fib6 info.
With specific series of events[1] we can reach net device refcount
imbalance which is unrecoverable. IPv4 is not affected because dsts
don't take a refcount on the route.

nexthop via 2002:db8::3 dev bridge weight 1 onlink
nexthop via 2002:db8::2 dev bridge.10 weight 1 onlink
Create rt6_info through one of the multipath legs, e.g.:
$ taskset -a -c 1 ./pkt_inj 24 bridge.10 2001:db8::10
(pkt_inj is just a custom packet generator, nothing special)
Then remove that leg from the group by replace (let's assume it is id
200 in this case):
$ ip nexthop replace id 203 group 201
Now remove the IPv6 route:
$ ip -6 route del 2001:db8::10/128
The route won't be really deleted due to the stale rt6_info holding 1
refcnt in nexthop id 200.
At this point we have the following reference count dependency:
(deleted) IPv6 route holds 1 reference over nhid 203
nh 203 holds 1 ref over id 201
nh 200 holds 1 ref over the net device and the route due to the stale
rt6_info
Now to create circular dependency between nh 200 and the IPv6 route, and
also to get a reference over nh 200, restore nhid 200 in the group:
$ ip nexthop replace id 203 group 201/200
And now we have a permanent circular dependncy because nhid 203 holds a
reference over nh 200 and 201, but the route holds a ref over nh 203 and
is deleted.
To trigger the bug just delete the group (nhid 203):
$ ip nexthop del id 203
It won't really be deleted due to the IPv6 route dependency, and now we
have 2 unlinked and deleted objects that reference each other: the group
and the IPv6 route. Since the group drops the reference it holds over its
entries at free time (i.e. its own refcount needs to drop to 0) that will
never happen and we get a permanent ref on them, since one of the entries
holds a reference over the IPv6 route it will also never be released.
At this point the dependencies are:
(deleted, only unlinked) IPv6 route holds reference over group nh 203
(deleted, only unlinked) group nh 203 holds reference over nh 201 and 200
nh 200 holds 1 ref over the net device and the route due to the stale
rt6_info
This is the last point where it can be fixed by running traffic through
nh 200, and specifically through the same CPU so the rt6_info (dst) will
get released due to the IPv6 genid, that in turn will free the IPv6
route, which in turn will free the ref count over the group nh 203.
If nh 200 is deleted at this point, it will never be released due to the
ref from the unlinked group 203, it will only be unlinked:
$ ip nexthop del id 200
$ ip nexthop
$
Now we can never release that stale rt6_info, we have IPv6 route with ref
over group nh 203, group nh 203 with ref over nh 200 and 201, nh 200 with
rt6_info (dst) with ref over the net device and the IPv6 route. All of
these objects are only unlinked, and cannot be released, thus they can't
release their ref counts.

Add helper function to inet_sock.h to check for bind address validity on
the base of the address type and whether nonlocal address are enabled
for the socket via any of the sockopts/sysctl, deduplicating checks in
ipv4/ping.c, ipv4/af_inet.c, ipv6/af_inet6.c (for mapped v4->v6

Under pressure, tcp recvmsg() has logic to process the socket backlog,
but calls tcp_cleanup_rbuf() right before.
Avoiding sending ACK right before processing new segments makes
a lot of sense, as this decrease the number of ACK packets,

tcp recvmsg() (or rx zerocopy) spends a fair amount of time
freeing skbs after their payload has been consumed.
A typical ~64KB GRO packet has to release ~45 page
references, eventually going to page allocator
for each of them.
Currently, this freeing is performed while socket lock
is held, meaning that there is a high chance that
BH handler has to queue incoming packets to tcp socket backlog.
This can cause additional latencies, because the user
thread has to process the backlog at release_sock() time,
and while doing so, additional frames can be added
by BH handler.
This patch adds logic to defer these frees after socket
lock is released, or directly from BH handler if possible.
Being able to free these skbs from BH handler helps a lot,
because this avoids the usual alloc/free assymetry,
when BH handler and user thread do not run on same cpu or
NUMA node.
One cpu can now be fully utilized for the kernel->user copy,
and another cpu is handling BH processing and skb/page
allocs/frees (assuming RFS is not forcing use of a single CPU)

TCP uses sk_eat_skb() when skbs can be removed from receive queue.
However, the call to skb_orphan() from __kfree_skb() incurs
an indirect call so sock_rfee(), which is more expensive than
a direct call, especially for CONFIG_RETPOLINE=y.

TCP Receive zerocopy iterates through the SKB queue via
tcp_recv_skb(), acquiring a pointer to an SKB and an offset within
that SKB to read from. From there, it iterates the SKB frags array to
determine which offset to start remapping pages from.
However, this is built on the assumption that the offset read so far
within the SKB is smaller than the SKB length. If this assumption is
violated, we can attempt to read an invalid frags array element, which
would cause a fault.
tcp_recv_skb() can cause such an SKB to be returned when the TCP FIN
flag is set. Therefore, we must guard against this occurrence inside
skb_advance_frag().
One way that we can reproduce this error follows:
1) In a receiver program, call getsockopt(TCP_ZEROCOPY_RECEIVE) with:
char some_array[32 * 1024];
struct tcp_zerocopy_receive zc = {
.copybuf_address = (__u64) &some_array[0],
.copybuf_len = 32 * 1024,
};
2) In a sender program, after a TCP handshake, send the following
sequence of packets:
i) Seq = [X, X+4000]
ii) Seq = [X+4000, X+5000]
iii) Seq = [X+4000, X+5000], Flags = FIN | URG, urgptr=1000
(This can happen without URG, if we have a signal pending, but URG is
a convenient way to reproduce the behaviour).
In this case, the following event sequence will occur on the receiver:
tcp_zerocopy_receive():
-> receive_fallback_to_copy() // copybuf_len >= inq
-> tcp_recvmsg_locked() // reads 5000 bytes, then breaks due to URG
-> tcp_recv_skb() // yields skb with skb->len == offset
-> tcp_zerocopy_set_hint_for_skb()
-> skb_advance_to_frag() // will returns a frags ptr. >= nr_frags
-> find_next_mappable_frag() // will dereference this bad frags ptr.
With this patch, skb_advance_to_frag() will no longer return an
invalid frags pointer, and will return NULL instead, fixing the issue.

It may be helpful to have access to the ifindex during bpf socket
lookup. An example may be to scope certain socket lookup logic to
specific interfaces, i.e. an interface may be made exempt from custom
lookup code.
Add the ifindex of the arriving connection to the bpf_sk_lookup API.

A socket in a sockmap may have different combinations of programs attached
depending on configuration. There can be no programs in which case the socket
acts as a sink only. There can be a TX program in this case a BPF program is
attached to sending side, but no RX program is attached. There can be an RX
program only where sends have no BPF program attached, but receives are hooked
with BPF. And finally, both TX and RX programs may be attached. Giving us the
permutations:
None, Tx, Rx, and TxRx
To date most of our use cases have been TX case being used as a fast datapath
to directly copy between local application and a userspace proxy. Or Rx cases
and TxRX applications that are operating an in kernel based proxy. The traffic
in the first case where we hook applications into a userspace application looks
like this:
AppA redirect AppB
Tx <-----------> Rx
| |
+ +
TCP <--> lo <--> TCP
In this case all traffic from AppA (after 3whs) is copied into the AppB
ingress queue and no traffic is ever on the TCP recieive_queue.
In the second case the application never receives, except in some rare error
cases, traffic on the actual user space socket. Instead the send happens in
the kernel.
AppProxy socket pool
sk0 ------------->{sk1,sk2, skn}
^ |
| |
| v
ingress lb egress
TCP TCP
Here because traffic is never read off the socket with userspace recv() APIs
there is only ever one reader on the sk receive_queue. Namely the BPF programs.
However, we've started to introduce a third configuration where the BPF program
on receive should process the data, but then the normal case is to push the
data into the receive queue of AppB.
AppB
recv() (userspace)
-----------------------
tcp_bpf_recvmsg() (kernel)
| |
| |
| |
ingress_msgQ |
| |
RX_BPF |
| |
v v
sk->receive_queue
This is different from the App{A,B} redirect because traffic is first received
on the sk->receive_queue.
Now for the issue. The tcp_bpf_recvmsg() handler first checks the ingress_msg
queue for any data handled by the BPF rx program and returned with PASS code
so that it was enqueued on the ingress msg queue. Then if no data exists on
that queue it checks the socket receive queue. Unfortunately, this is the same
receive_queue the BPF program is reading data off of. So we get a race. Its
possible for the recvmsg() hook to pull data off the receive_queue before the
BPF hook has a chance to read it. It typically happens when an application is
banging on recv() and getting EAGAINs. Until they manage to race with the RX
BPF program.
To fix this we note that before this patch at attach time when the socket is
loaded into the map we check if it needs a TX program or just the base set of
proto bpf hooks. Then it uses the above general RX hook regardless of if we
have a BPF program attached at rx or not. This patch now extends this check to
handle all cases enumerated above, TX, RX, TXRX, and none. And to fix above
race when an RX program is attached we use a new hook that is nearly identical
to the old one except now we do not let the recv() call skip the RX BPF program.
Now only the BPF program pulls data from sk->receive_queue and recv() only
pulls data from the ingress msgQ post BPF program handling.
With this resolved our AppB from above has been up and running for many hours
without detecting any errors. We do this by correlating counters in RX BPF
events and the AppB to ensure data is never skipping the BPF program. Selftests,
was not able to detect this because we only run them for a short period of time
on well ordered send/recvs so we don't get any of the noise we see in real
application environments.

We do not need to handle unhash from BPF side we can simply wait for the
close to happen. The original concern was a socket could transition from
ESTABLISHED state to a new state while the BPF hook was still attached.
But, we convinced ourself this is no longer possible and we also improved
BPF sockmap to handle listen sockets so this is no longer a problem.
More importantly though there are cases where unhash is called when data is
in the receive queue. The BPF unhash logic will flush this data which is
wrong. To be correct it should keep the data in the receive queue and allow
a receiving application to continue reading the data. This may happen when
tcp_abort() is received for example. Instead of complicating the logic in
unhash simply moving all this to tcp_close() hook solves this.

nr_free_buffer_pages could be exposed through mm.h instead of swap.h.
The advantage of this change is that it can reduce the obsolete
includes. For example, net/ipv4/tcp.c wouldn't need swap.h any more
since it has already included mm.h. Similarly, after checking all the
other files, it comes that tcp.c, udp.c meter.c ,... follow the same
rule, so these files can have swap.h removed too.
Moreover, after preprocessing all the files that use
nr_free_buffer_pages, it turns out that those files have already
included mm.h.Thus, we can move nr_free_buffer_pages from swap.h to mm.h
safely. This change will not affect the compilation of other files.

Track skbs containing only zerocopy data and avoid charging them to
kernel memory to correctly account the memory utilization for
msg_zerocopy. All of the data in such skbs is held in user pages which
are already accounted to user. Before this change, they are charged
again in kernel in __zerocopy_sg_from_iter. The charging in kernel is
excessive because data is not being copied into skb frags. This
excessive charging can lead to kernel going into memory pressure
state which impacts all sockets in the system adversely. Mark pure
zerocopy skbs with a SKBFL_PURE_ZEROCOPY flag and remove
charge/uncharge for data in such skbs.
Initially, an skb is marked pure zerocopy when it is empty and in
zerocopy path. skb can then change from a pure zerocopy skb to mixed
data skb (zerocopy and copy data) if it is at tail of write queue and
there is room available in it and non-zerocopy data is being sent in
the next sendmsg call. At this time sk_mem_charge is done for the pure
zerocopied data and the pure zerocopy flag is unmarked. We found that
this happens very rarely on workloads that pass MSG_ZEROCOPY.
A pure zerocopy skb can later be coalesced into normal skb if they are
next to each other in queue but this patch prevents coalescing from
happening. This avoids complexity of charging when skb downgrades from
pure zerocopy to mixed. This is also rare.
In sk_wmem_free_skb, if it is a pure zerocopy skb, an sk_mem_uncharge
for SKB_TRUESIZE(skb_end_offset(skb)) is done for sk_mem_charge in
tcp_skb_entail for an skb without data.
Testing with the msg_zerocopy.c benchmark between two hosts(100G nics)
with zerocopy showed that before this patch the 'sock' variable in
memory.stat for cgroup2 that tracks sum of sk_forward_alloc,
sk_rmem_alloc and sk_wmem_queued is around 1822720 and with this
change it is 0. This is due to no charge to sk_forward_alloc for
zerocopy data and shows memory utilization for kernel is lowered.
With this commit we don't see the warning we saw in previous commit
which resulted in commit 84882cf72c.

This change introduces a new sysctl parameter, arp_evict_nocarrier.
When set (default) the ARP cache will be cleared on a NOCARRIER event.
This new option has been defaulted to '1' which maintains existing
behavior.
Clearing the ARP cache on NOCARRIER is relatively new, introduced by:
commit 859bd2ef1f
Author: David Ahern <dsahern@gmail.com>
Date: Thu Oct 11 20:33:49 2018 -0700
net: Evict neighbor entries on carrier down
The reason for this changes is to prevent the ARP cache from being
cleared when a wireless device roams. Specifically for wireless roams
the ARP cache should not be cleared because the underlying network has not
changed. Clearing the ARP cache in this case can introduce significant
delays sending out packets after a roam.
A user reported such a situation here:
https://lore.kernel.org/linux-wireless/CACsRnHWa47zpx3D1oDq9JYnZWniS8yBwW1h0WAVZ6vrbwL_S0w@mail.gmail.com/
After some investigation it was found that the kernel was holding onto
packets until ARP finished which resulted in this 1 second delay. It
was also found that the first ARP who-has was never responded to,
which is actually what caues the delay. This change is more or less
working around this behavior, but again, there is no reason to clear
the cache on a roam anyways.
As for the unanswered who-has, we know the packet made it OTA since
it was seen while monitoring. Why it never received a response is
unknown. In any case, since this is a problem on the AP side of things
all that can be done is to work around it until it is solved.
Some background on testing/reproducing the packet delay:
Hardware:
- 2 access points configured for Fast BSS Transition (Though I don't
see why regular reassociation wouldn't have the same behavior)
- Wireless station running IWD as supplicant
- A device on network able to respond to pings (I used one of the APs)
Procedure:
- Connect to first AP
- Ping once to establish an ARP entry
- Start a tcpdump
- Roam to second AP
- Wait for operstate UP event, and note the timestamp
- Start pinging
Results:
Below is the tcpdump after UP. It was recorded the interface went UP at

You can see the first ARP who-has went out very quickly after UP, but
was never responded to. Nearly a second later the kernel retries and
gets a response. Only then do the ping packets go out. If an ARP entry
is manually added prior to UP (after the cache is cleared) it is seen
that the first ping is never responded to, so its not only an issue with
ARP but with data packets in general.
As mentioned prior, the wireless interface was also monitored to verify
the ping/ARP packet made it OTA which was observed to be true.

While waiting for a carrier to come on one of the netdevices, some
devices will require to take the rtnl lock at some point to fully
initialize all parts of the link.
That's the case for SFP, where the rtnl is taken when a module gets
detected. This prevents mounting an NFS rootfs over an SFP link.
This means that while ipconfig waits for carriers to be detected, no SFP
modules can be detected in the meantime, it's only detected after
ipconfig times out.
This commit releases the rtnl_lock while waiting for the carrier to come
up, and re-takes it to check the for the init device and carrier status.

A later patch will change the MPTCP memory accounting schema
in such a way that MPTCP sockets will encode the total amount of
forward allocated memory in two separate fields (one for tx and
one for rx).
MPTCP sockets will use their own helper to provide the accurate
amount of fwd allocated memory.
To allow the above, this patch adds a new, optional, sk method to
fetch the fwd memory, wrap the call in a new helper and use it
where it is appropriate.

With two Msgs, msgA and msgB and a user doing nonblocking sendmsg calls (or
multiple cores) on a single socket 'sk' we could get the following flow.
msgA, sk msgB, sk
----------- ---------------
tcp_bpf_sendmsg()
lock(sk)
psock = sk->psock
tcp_bpf_sendmsg()
lock(sk) ... blocking
tcp_bpf_send_verdict
if (psock->eval == NONE)
psock->eval = sk_psock_msg_verdict
..
< handle SK_REDIRECT case >
release_sock(sk) < lock dropped so grab here >
ret = tcp_bpf_sendmsg_redir
psock = sk->psock
tcp_bpf_send_verdict
lock_sock(sk) ... blocking on B
if (psock->eval == NONE) <- boom.
psock->eval will have msgA state
The problem here is we dropped the lock on msgA and grabbed it with msgB.
Now we have old state in psock and importantly psock->eval has not been
cleared. So msgB will run whatever action was done on A and the verdict
program may never see it.

v1: Implement a more general statement as recommended by Eric Dumazet. The
sequence number will be advanced, so this check will fix the FIN case and
other cases.
A customer reported sockets stuck in the CLOSING state. A Vmcore revealed that
the write_queue was not empty as determined by tcp_write_queue_empty() but the
sk_buff containing the FIN flag had been freed and the socket was zombied in
that state. Corresponding pcaps show no FIN from the Linux kernel on the wire.
Some instrumentation was added to the kernel and it was found that there is a
timing window where tcp_sendmsg() can run after tcp_send_fin().
tcp_sendmsg() will hit an error, for example:
1269 ▹ if (sk->sk_err || (sk->sk_shutdown & SEND_SHUTDOWN))↩
1270 ▹ ▹ goto do_error;↩
tcp_remove_empty_skb() will then free the FIN sk_buff as "skb->len == 0". The
TCP socket is now wedged in the FIN-WAIT-1 state because the FIN is never sent.
If the other side sends a FIN packet the socket will transition to CLOSING and
remain that way until the system is rebooted.
Fix this by checking for the FIN flag in the sk_buff and don't free it if that
is the case. Testing confirmed that fixed the issue.

With net.ipv4.tcp_l3mdev_accept=1 it is possible for a listen socket to
accept connection from the same client address in different VRFs. It is
also possible to set different MD5 keys for these clients which differ
only in the tcpm_l3index field.
This appears to work when distinguishing between different VRFs but not
between non-VRF and VRF connections. In particular:
* tcp_md5_do_lookup_exact will match a non-vrf key against a vrf key.
This means that adding a key with l3index != 0 after a key with l3index
== 0 will cause the earlier key to be deleted. Both keys can be present
if the non-vrf key is added later.
* _tcp_md5_do_lookup can match a non-vrf key before a vrf key. This
casues failures if the passwords differ.
Fix this by making tcp_md5_do_lookup_exact perform an actual exact
comparison on l3index and by making __tcp_md5_do_lookup perfer
vrf-bound keys above other considerations like prefixlen.

As explained in commit cf86a086a1 ("net/dst: use a smaller percpu_counter
batch for dst entries accounting"), default batch size is too big
for the default value of tcp_max_orphans (262144).
But even if we reduce batch sizes, there would still be cases
where the estimated count of orphans is beyond the limit,
and where tcp_too_many_orphans() has to call the expensive
percpu_counter_sum_positive().
One solution is to use plain per-cpu counters, and have
a timer to periodically refresh this cache.
Updating this cache every 100ms seems about right, tcp pressure
state is not radically changing over shorter periods.

The commit 6da5b0f027 ("net: ensure unbound datagram socket to be
chosen when not in a VRF") modified compute_score() so that a device
match is always made, not just in the case of an l3mdev skb, then
increments the score also for unbound sockets. This ensures that
sockets bound to an l3mdev are never selected when not in a VRF.
But as unbound and bound sockets are now scored equally, this results
in the last opened socket being selected if there are matches in the
default VRF for an unbound socket and a socket bound to a dev that is
not an l3mdev. However, handling prior to this commit was to always
select the bound socket in this case. Reinstate this handling by
incrementing the score only for bound sockets. The required isolation
due to choosing between an unbound socket and a socket bound to an
l3mdev remains in place due to the device match always being made.
The same approach is taken for compute_score() for stream sockets.

This commit moves BTF ID lookup into the newly added registration
helper, in a way that the bbr, cubic, and dctcp implementation set up
their sets in the bpf_tcp_ca kfunc_btf_set list, while the ones not
dependent on modules are looked up from the wrapper function.
This lifts the restriction for them to be compiled as built in objects,
and can be loaded as modules if required. Also modify Makefile.modfinal
to call resolve_btfids for each module.
Note that since kernel kfunc_ids never overlap with module kfunc_ids, we
only match the owner for module btf id sets.

This change adds support on the kernel side to allow for BPF programs to
call kernel module functions. Userspace will prepare an array of module
BTF fds that is passed in during BPF_PROG_LOAD using fd_array parameter.
In the kernel, the module BTFs are placed in the auxilliary struct for
bpf_prog, and loaded as needed.
The verifier then uses insn->off to index into the fd_array. insn->off
0 is reserved for vmlinux BTF (for backwards compat), so userspace must
use an fd_array index > 0 for module kfunc support. kfunc_btf_tab is
sorted based on offset in an array, and each offset corresponds to one
descriptor, with a max limit up to 256 such module BTFs.
We also change existing kfunc_tab to distinguish each element based on
imm, off pair as each such call will now be distinct.
Another change is to check_kfunc_call callback, which now include a
struct module * pointer, this is to be used in later patch such that the
kfunc_id and module pointer are matched for dynamically registered BTF
sets from loadable modules, so that same kfunc_id in two modules doesn't
lead to check_kfunc_call succeeding. For the duration of the
check_kfunc_call, the reference to struct module exists, as it returns
the pointer stored in kfunc_btf_tab.

This socket option provides a mechanism for users to reserve a certain
amount of memory for the socket to use. When this option is set, kernel
charges the user specified amount of memory to memcg, as well as
sk_forward_alloc. This amount of memory is not reclaimable and is
available in sk_forward_alloc for this socket.
With this socket option set, the networking stack spends less cycles
doing forward alloc and reclaim, which should lead to better system
performance, with the cost of an amount of pre-allocated and
unreclaimable memory, even under memory pressure.
Note:
This socket option is only available when memory cgroup is enabled and we
require this reserved memory to be charged to the user's memcg. We hope
this could avoid mis-behaving users to abused this feature to reserve a
large amount on certain sockets and cause unfairness for others.

In order to track CE marks per rate sample (one round trip), TCP needs a
per-skb header field to record the tp->delivered_ce count when the skb
was sent. To make space, we replace the "last_in_flight" field which is
used exclusively for NV congestion control. The stat needed by NV can be
alternatively approximated by existing stats tcp_sock delivered and
mss_cache.
This patch counts the number of packets delivered which have CE marks in
the rate sample, using similar approach of delivery accounting.

- commit 472c2e07ee ("tcp: add one skb cache for tx")
- commit 8b27dae5a2 ("tcp: add one skb cache for rx")
Having a cache of one skb (in each direction) per TCP socket is fragile,
since it can cause a significant increase of memory needs,
and not good enough for high speed flows anyway where more than one skb
is needed.
We want instead to add a generic infrastructure, with more flexible
per-cpu caches, for alien NUMA nodes.

syzkaller discovered memory leaks [1] that can be reduced to the
following commands:
# ip nexthop add id 1 blackhole
# devlink dev reload pci/0000:06:00.0
As part of the reload flow, mlxsw will unregister its netdevs and then
unregister from the nexthop notification chain. Before unregistering
from the notification chain, mlxsw will receive delete notifications for
nexthop objects using netdevs registered by mlxsw or their uppers. mlxsw
will not receive notifications for nexthops using netdevs that are not
dismantled as part of the reload flow. For example, the blackhole
nexthop above that internally uses the loopback netdev as its nexthop
device.
One way to fix this problem is to have listeners flush their nexthop
tables after unregistering from the notification chain. This is
error-prone as evident by this patch and also not symmetric with the
registration path where a listener receives a dump of all the existing
nexthops.
Therefore, fix this problem by replaying delete notifications for the
listener being unregistered. This is symmetric to the registration path
and also consistent with the netdev notification chain.
The above means that unregister_nexthop_notifier(), like
register_nexthop_notifier(), will have to take RTNL in order to iterate
over the existing nexthops and that any callers of the function cannot
hold RTNL. This is true for mlxsw and netdevsim, but not for the VXLAN
driver. To avoid a deadlock, change the latter to unregister its nexthop
listener without holding RTNL, making it symmetric to the registration
path.

The resilient nexthop group torture tests in fib_nexthop.sh exposed a
possible division by zero while replacing a resilient group [1]. The
division by zero occurs when the data path sees a resilient nexthop
group with zero buckets.
The tests replace a resilient nexthop group in a loop while traffic is
forwarded through it. The tests do not specify the number of buckets
while performing the replacement, resulting in the kernel allocating a
stub resilient table (i.e, 'struct nh_res_table') with zero buckets.
This table should never be visible to the data path, but the old nexthop
group (i.e., 'oldg') might still be used by the data path when the stub
table is assigned to it.
Fix this by only assigning the stub table to the old nexthop group after
making sure the group is no longer used by the data path.

ip_cmsg_send() can loop over multiple cmsghdr()

we do not free ipc.ok
If IP_RETOPTS is not successful, we have freed the allocated temporary space,

Turn udp_tunnel_nic work-queue to an ordered work-queue. This queue
holds the UDP-tunnel configuration commands of the different netdevs.
When the netdevs are functions of the same NIC the order of
execution may be crucial.
Problem example:
NIC with 2 PFs, both PFs declare offload quota of up to 3 UDP-ports.
$ifconfig eth2 1.1.1.1/16 up
$ip link add eth2_19503 type vxlan id 5049 remote 1.1.1.2 dev eth2 dstport 19053
$ip link set dev eth2_19503 up
$ip link add eth2_19504 type vxlan id 5049 remote 1.1.1.3 dev eth2 dstport 19054
$ip link set dev eth2_19504 up
$ip link add eth2_19505 type vxlan id 5049 remote 1.1.1.4 dev eth2 dstport 19055
$ip link set dev eth2_19505 up
$ip link add eth2_19506 type vxlan id 5049 remote 1.1.1.5 dev eth2 dstport 19056
$ip link set dev eth2_19506 up
NIC RX port offload infrastructure offloads the first 3 UDP-ports (on
all devices which sets NETIF_F_RX_UDP_TUNNEL_PORT feature) and not
UDP-port 19056. So both PFs gets this offload configuration.
$ip link set dev eth2_19504 down
This triggers udp-tunnel-core to remove the UDP-port 19504 from
offload-ports-list and offload UDP-port 19056 instead.
In this scenario it is important that the UDP-port of 19504 will be
removed from both PFs before trying to add UDP-port 19056. The NIC can
stop offloading a UDP-port only when all references are removed.
Otherwise the NIC may report exceeding of the offload quota.

The GRE tunnel device can pull existing outer headers in ipge_xmit.
This is a rare path, apparently unique to this device. The below
commit ensured that pulling does not move skb->data beyond csum_start.
But it has a false positive if ip_summed is not CHECKSUM_PARTIAL and
thus csum_start is irrelevant.
Refine to exclude this. At the same time simplify and strengthen the
test.
Simplify, by moving the check next to the offending pull, making it
more self documenting and removing an unnecessary branch from other
code paths.
Strengthen, by also ensuring that the transport header is correct and
therefore the inner headers will be after skb_reset_inner_headers.
The transport header is set to csum_start in skb_partial_csum_set.

Even after commit 6457378fe7 ("ipv4: use siphash instead of Jenkins in
fnhe_hashfun()"), an attacker can still use brute force to learn
some secrets from a victim linux host.
One way to defeat these attacks is to make the max depth of the hash
table bucket a random value.
Before this patch, each bucket of the hash table used to store exceptions
could contain 6 items under attack.
After the patch, each bucket would contains a random number of items,
between 6 and 10. The attacker can no longer infer secrets.
This is slightly increasing memory size used by the hash table,
by 50% in average, we do not expect this to be a problem.
This patch is more complex than the prior one (IPv6 equivalent),
because IPv4 was reusing the oldest entry.
Since we need to be able to evict more than one entry per
update_or_create_fnhe() call, I had to replace
fnhe_oldest() with fnhe_remove_oldest().
Also note that we will queue extra kfree_rcu() calls under stress,
which hopefully wont be a too big issue.

across two variables, window_clamp ("Maximal window to advertise" in

This patch updates the function where the window clamp is set to also
reduce the current window clamp, rcv_sshthresh, if needed. With this,
setting the TCP_WINDOW_CLAMP option has the documented effect of limiting

This patch allows the bpf-tcp-cc to call bpf_setsockopt. One use
case is to allow a bpf-tcp-cc switching to another cc during init().
For example, when the tcp flow is not ecn ready, the bpf_dctcp
can switch to another cc by calling setsockopt(TCP_CONGESTION).
During setsockopt(TCP_CONGESTION), the new tcp-cc's init() will be
called and this could cause a recursion but it is stopped by the
current trampoline's logic (in the prog->active counter).
While retiring a bpf-tcp-cc (e.g. in tcp_v[46]_destroy_sock()),
the tcp stack calls bpf-tcp-cc's release(). To avoid the retiring
bpf-tcp-cc making further changes to the sk, bpf_setsockopt is not
available to the bpf-tcp-cc's release(). This will avoid release()
making setsockopt() call that will potentially allocate new resources.
Although the bpf-tcp-cc already has a more powerful way to read tcp_sock
from the PTR_TO_BTF_ID, it is usually expected that bpf_getsockopt and
bpf_setsockopt are available together. Thus, bpf_getsockopt() is also
added to all tcp_congestion_ops except release().
When the old bpf-tcp-cc is calling setsockopt(TCP_CONGESTION)
to switch to a new cc, the old bpf-tcp-cc will be released by
bpf_struct_ops_put(). Thus, this patch also puts the bpf_struct_ops_map
after a rcu grace period because the trampoline's image cannot be freed
while the old bpf-tcp-cc is still running.
bpf-tcp-cc can only access icsk_ca_priv as SCALAR. All kernel's
tcp-cc is also accessing the icsk_ca_priv as SCALAR. The size
of icsk_ca_priv has already been raised a few times to avoid
extra kmalloc and memory referencing. The only exception is the
kernel's tcp_cdg.c that stores a kmalloc()-ed pointer in icsk_ca_priv.
To avoid the old bpf-tcp-cc accidentally overriding this tcp_cdg's pointer
value stored in icsk_ca_priv after switching and without over-complicating
the bpf's verifier for this one exception in tcp_cdg, this patch does not
allow switching to tcp_cdg. If there is a need, bpf_tcp_cdg can be
implemented and then use the bpf_sk_storage as the extended storage.
bpf_sk_setsockopt proto has only been recently added and used
in bpf-sockopt and bpf-iter-tcp, so impose the tcp_cdg limitation in the
same proto instead of adding a new proto specifically for bpf-tcp-cc.

Add an enum (cgroup_bpf_attach_type) containing only valid cgroup_bpf
attach types and a function to map bpf_attach_type values to the new
enum. Inspired by netns_bpf_attach_type.
Then, migrate cgroup_bpf to use cgroup_bpf_attach_type wherever
possible. Functionality is unchanged as attach_type_to_prog_type
switches in bpf/syscall.c were preventing non-cgroup programs from
making use of the invalid cgroup_bpf array slots.
As a result struct cgroup_bpf uses 504 fewer bytes relative to when its
arrays were sized using MAX_BPF_ATTACH_TYPE.
bpf_cgroup_storage is notably not migrated as struct
bpf_cgroup_storage_key is part of uapi and contains a bpf_attach_type
member which is not meant to be opaque. Similarly, bpf_cgroup_link
continues to report its bpf_attach_type member to userspace via fdinfo
and bpf_link_info.
To ease disambiguation, bpf_attach_type variables are renamed from
'type' to 'atype' when changed to cgroup_bpf_attach_type.

Since the original TFO server code was implemented in commit
168a8f5805 ("tcp: TCP Fast Open Server -
main code path") the TFO server code has supported the sysctl bit flag
TFO_SERVER_COOKIE_NOT_REQD. Currently, when the TFO_SERVER_ENABLE and
TFO_SERVER_COOKIE_NOT_REQD sysctl bit flags are set, a server connection
will accept a SYN with N bytes of data (N > 0) that has no TFO cookie,
create a new fast open connection, process the incoming data in the SYN,
and make the connection ready for accepting. After accepting, the
connection is ready for read()/recvmsg() to read the N bytes of data in
the SYN, ready for write()/sendmsg() calls and data transmissions to
transmit data.
This commit changes an edge case in this feature by changing this
behavior to apply to (N >= 0) bytes of data in the SYN rather than only
(N > 0) bytes of data in the SYN. Now, a server will accept a data-less
SYN without a TFO cookie if TFO_SERVER_COOKIE_NOT_REQD is set.
Caveat! While this enables a new kind of TFO (data-less empty-cookie
SYN), some firewall rules setup may not work if they assume such packets
are not legit TFOs and will filter them.

Currently if BBR congestion control is initialized after more than 2B
packets have been delivered, depending on the phase of the
tp->delivered counter the tracking of BBR round trips can get stuck.
The bug arises because if tp->delivered is between 2^31 and 2^32 at
the time the BBR congestion control module is initialized, then the
initialization of bbr->next_rtt_delivered to 0 will cause the logic to
believe that the end of the round trip is still billions of packets in
the future. More specifically, the following check will fail
repeatedly:
!before(rs->prior_delivered, bbr->next_rtt_delivered)
and thus the connection will take up to 2B packets delivered before
that check will pass and the connection will set:
bbr->round_start = 1;
This could cause many mechanisms in BBR to fail to trigger, for
example bbr_check_full_bw_reached() would likely never exit STARTUP.
This bug is 5 years old and has not been observed, and as a practical
matter this would likely rarely trigger, since it would require
transferring at least 2B packets, or likely more than 3 terabytes of
data, before switching congestion control algorithms to BBR.
This patch is a stable candidate for kernels as far back as v4.9,
when tcp_bbr.c was added.

For historical reasons x_tables still register tables by default in the
initial namespace.
Only newly created net namespaces add the hook on demand.
This means that the init_net always pays hook cost, even if no filtering
rules are added (e.g. only used inside a single netns).
Note that the hooks are added even when 'iptables -L' is called.
This is because there is no way to tell 'iptables -A' and 'iptables -L'
apart at kernel level.
The only solution would be to register the table, but delay hook
registration until the first rule gets added (or policy gets changed).
That however means that counters are not hooked either, so 'iptables -L'
would always show 0-counters even when traffic is flowing which might be
unexpected.
This keeps table and hook registration consistent with what is already done
in non-init netns: first iptables(-save) invocation registers both table
and hooks.
This applies the same solution adopted for ebtables.
All tables register a template that contains the l3 family, the name
and a constructor function that is called when the initial table has to
be added.

There is a regular need in the kernel to provide a way to declare having
a dynamically sized set of trailing elements in a structure. Kernel code
should always use “flexible array members”[1] for these cases. The older
style of one-element or zero-length arrays should no longer be used[2].
Use an anonymous union with a couple of anonymous structs in order to
keep userspace unchanged:
$ pahole -C ip_msfilter net/ipv4/ip_sockglue.o
struct ip_msfilter {
union {
struct {
__be32 imsf_multiaddr_aux; /* 0 4 */
__be32 imsf_interface_aux; /* 4 4 */
__u32 imsf_fmode_aux; /* 8 4 */
__u32 imsf_numsrc_aux; /* 12 4 */
__be32 imsf_slist[1]; /* 16 4 */
}; /* 0 20 */
struct {
__be32 imsf_multiaddr; /* 0 4 */
__be32 imsf_interface; /* 4 4 */
__u32 imsf_fmode; /* 8 4 */
__u32 imsf_numsrc; /* 12 4 */
__be32 imsf_slist_flex[0]; /* 16 0 */
}; /* 0 16 */
}; /* 0 20 */
/* size: 20, cachelines: 1, members: 1 */
/* last cacheline: 20 bytes */
};
Also, refactor the code accordingly and make use of the struct_size()
and flex_array_size() helpers.
This helps with the ongoing efforts to globally enable -Warray-bounds
and get us closer to being able to tighten the FORTIFY_SOURCE routines
on memcpy().

skb->encapsulation flag is set. GSO uses this value to calculate the length
of an individual segment of a GSO packet in skb_gso_transport_seglen().
However, tcp/udp gro_complete callbacks don't update the
skb->inner_transport_header when processing an encapsulated TCP/UDP
segment. As a result a GRO skb has ->inner_transport_header set to a value
carried over from earlier skb processing.
This can have mild to tragic consequences. From miscalculating the GSO
segment length to triggering a page fault [1], when trying to read TCP/UDP
header at an address past the skb->data page.
The latter scenario leads to an oops report like so:

The bug can be observed in a simple setup where we send IP/GRE/IP/TCP
packets into a netns over a veth pair. Inside the netns, packets are
forwarded to dummy device:
trafgen -> [veth A]--[veth B] -forward-> [dummy]
For veth B to GRO aggregate packets on receive, it needs to have an XDP
program attached (for example, a trivial XDP_PASS). Additionally, for UDP,
we need to enable GSO_UDP_L4 feature on the device:
ip netns exec A ethtool -K AB rx-udp-gro-forwarding on
The last component is an artificial delay to increase the chances of GRO
batching happening:
ip netns exec A tc qdisc add dev AB root \
netem delay 200us slot 5ms 10ms packets 2 bytes 64k
With such a setup in place, the bug can be observed by tracing the skb
outer and inner offsets when GSO skb is transmitted from the dummy device:
tcp:
FUNC DEV SKB_LEN NH TH ENC INH ITH GSO_SIZE GSO_TYPE
ip_finish_output dumB 2830 270 290 1 294 254 1383 (tcpv4,gre,)

ip_finish_output dumB 2818 270 290 1 294 254 1383 (gre,udp_l4,)
^^^
Fix it by updating the inner transport header offset in tcp/udp
gro_complete callbacks, similar to how {inet,ipv6}_gro_complete callbacks
update the inner network header offset, when skb->encapsulation flag is
set.

Previously, a DSACK could expand the RACK reordering window when no
reordering has been seen, and/or when the DSACK was due to an
unnecessary TLP retransmit (rather than a spurious fast recovery due
to reordering). This could result in unnecessarily growing the RACK
reordering window and thus unnecessarily delaying RACK-based fast
recovery episodes.
To avoid these issues, this commit tightens the conditions under which
a DSACK triggers the RACK reordering window to grow, so that a
connection only expands its RACK reordering window if:
(a) reordering has been seen in the connection
(b) a DSACKed range does not match the most recent TLP retransmit

Fix the following out-of-bounds warning:
In function 'ip_copy_addrs',
inlined from '__ip_queue_xmit' at net/ipv4/ip_output.c:517:2:
net/ipv4/ip_output.c:449:2: warning: 'memcpy' offset [40, 43] from the object at 'fl' is out of the bounds of referenced subobject 'saddr' with type 'unsigned int' at offset 36 [-Warray-bounds]
449 | memcpy(&iph->saddr, &fl4->saddr,
| ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
450 | sizeof(fl4->saddr) + sizeof(fl4->daddr));
| ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The problem is that the original code is trying to copy data into a
couple of struct members adjacent to each other in a single call to
memcpy(). This causes a legitimate compiler warning because memcpy()
overruns the length of &iph->saddr and &fl4->saddr. As these are just
a couple of struct members, fix this by using direct assignments,
instead of memcpy().
This helps with the ongoing efforts to globally enable -Warray-bounds
and get us closer to being able to tighten the FORTIFY_SOURCE routines
on memcpy().

This patch allows bpf tcp iter to call bpf_(get|set)sockopt.
To allow a specific bpf iter (tcp here) to call a set of helpers,
get_func_proto function pointer is added to bpf_iter_reg.

CAP_PERFMON or CAP_SYS_ADMIN, so this patch does not
impose other capability checks for bpf_(get|set)sockopt.

This patch does batching and lock_sock for the bpf tcp iter.
It does not affect the proc fs iteration.
With bpf-tcp-cc, new algo rollout happens more often. Instead of
restarting the application to pick up the new tcp-cc, the next patch
will allow bpf iter to do setsockopt(TCP_CONGESTION). This requires
locking the sock.
Also, unlike the proc iteration (cat /proc/net/tcp[6]), the bpf iter
can inspect all fields of a tcp_sock. It will be useful to have a
consistent view on some of the fields (e.g. the ones reported in
tcp_get_info() that also acquires the sock lock).
Double lock: locking the bucket first and then locking the sock could
lead to deadlock. This patch takes a batching approach similar to
inet_diag. While holding the bucket lock, it batch a number of sockets
into an array first and then unlock the bucket. Before doing show(),
it then calls lock_sock_fast().
In a machine with ~400k connections, the maximum number of
sk in a bucket of the established hashtable is 7. 0.02% of
the established connections fall into this bucket size.
For listen hash (port+addr lhash2), the bucket is usually very
small also except for the SO_REUSEPORT use case which the
userspace could have one SO_REUSEPORT socket per thread.
While batching is used, it can also minimize the chance of missing
sock in the setsockopt use case if the whole bucket is batched.
This patch will start with a batch array with INIT_BATCH_SZ (16)
which will be enough for the most common cases. bpf_iter_tcp_batch()
will try to realloc to a larger array to handle exception case (e.g.
the SO_REUSEPORT case in the lhash2).

This patch moves the tcp seq_file iteration on listeners
from the port only listening_hash to the port+addr lhash2.
When iterating from the bpf iter, the next patch will need to
lock the socket such that the bpf iter can call setsockopt (e.g. to
change the TCP_CONGESTION). To avoid locking the bucket and then locking
the sock, the bpf iter will first batch some sockets from the same bucket
and then unlock the bucket. If the bucket size is small (which
usually is), it is easier to batch the whole bucket such that it is less
likely to miss a setsockopt on a socket due to changes in the bucket.
However, the port only listening_hash could have many listeners
hashed to a bucket (e.g. many individual VIP(s):443 and also
multiple by the number of SO_REUSEPORT). We have seen bucket size in
tens of thousands range. Also, the chance of having changes
in some popular port buckets (e.g. 443) is also high.
The port+addr lhash2 was introduced to solve this large listener bucket
issue. Also, the listening_hash usage has already been replaced with
lhash2 in the fast path inet[6]_lookup_listener(). This patch follows
the same direction on moving to lhash2 and iterates the lhash2
instead of listening_hash.

The current listening_get_next() is overloaded by passing
NULL to the 2nd arg, like listening_get_next(seq, NULL), to
mean get_first().
This patch moves some logic from the listening_get_next() into
a new function listening_get_first(). It will be equivalent
to the current established_get_first() and established_get_next()
setup. get_first() is to find a non empty bucket and return
the first sk. get_next() is to find the next sk of the current
bucket and then resorts to get_first() if the current bucket is
exhausted.
The next patch is to move the listener seq_file iteration from
listening_hash (port only) to lhash2 (port+addr).
Separating out listening_get_first() from listening_get_next()
here will make the following lhash2 changes cleaner and easier to

A following patch will create a separate struct to store extra
bpf_iter state and it will embed the existing tcp_iter_state like this:
struct bpf_tcp_iter_state {
struct tcp_iter_state state;
/* More bpf_iter specific states here ... */
}
As a prep work, this patch removes the
"struct tcp_seq_afinfo *bpf_seq_afinfo" where its purpose is
to tell if it is iterating from bpf_iter instead of proc fs.
Currently, if "*bpf_seq_afinfo" is not NULL, it is iterating from
bpf_iter. The kernel should not filter by the addr family and
leave this filtering decision to the bpf prog.
Instead of adding a "*bpf_seq_afinfo" pointer, this patch uses the
"seq->op == &bpf_iter_tcp_seq_ops" test to tell if it is iterating
from the bpf iter.

st->bucket stores the current bucket number.
st->offset stores the offset within this bucket that is the sk to be
seq_show(). Thus, st->offset only makes sense within the same
st->bucket.
These two variables are an optimization for the common no-lseek case.
When resuming the seq_file iteration (i.e. seq_start()),
tcp_seek_last_pos() tries to continue from the st->offset
at bucket st->bucket.
However, it is possible that the bucket pointed by st->bucket
has changed and st->offset may end up skipping the whole st->bucket
without finding a sk. In this case, tcp_seek_last_pos() currently
continues to satisfy the offset condition in the next (and incorrect)
bucket. Instead, regardless of the offset value, the first sk of the
next bucket should be returned. Thus, "bucket == st->bucket" check is
added to tcp_seek_last_pos().
The chance of hitting this is small and the issue is a decade old,
so targeting for the next tree.

In cases where the header straight after the tunnel header was
another ethernet header (TEB), instead of the network header,
the ECN decapsulation code would treat the ethernet header as if
it was an IP header, resulting in mishandling and possible
wrong drops or corruption of the IP header.
In this case, ECT(1) is sent, so IP_ECN_decapsulate tries to copy it to the
inner IPv4 header, and correct its checksum.
The offset of the ECT bits in an IPv4 header corresponds to the
lower 2 bits of the second octet of the destination MAC address

compat_ifreq_ioctl() is one of the last users of copy_in_user() and
compat_alloc_user_space(), as it attempts to convert the 'struct ifreq'
arguments from 32-bit to 64-bit format as used by dev_ioctl() and a
couple of socket family specific interpretations.
The current implementation works correctly when calling dev_ioctl(),
inet_ioctl(), ieee802154_sock_ioctl(), atalk_ioctl(), qrtr_ioctl()
and packet_ioctl(). The ioctl handlers for x25, netrom, rose and x25 do
not interpret the arguments and only block the corresponding commands,
so they do not care.
For af_inet6 and af_decnet however, the compat conversion is slightly
incorrect, as it will copy more data than the native handler accesses,
both of them use a structure that is shorter than ifreq.
Replace the copy_in_user() conversion with a pair of accessor functions
to read and write the ifreq data in place with the correct length where
needed, while leaving the other ones to copy the (already compatible)
structures directly.

Since dynamic registration of the gifconf() helper is only used for
IPv4, and this can not be in a loadable module, this can be simplified
noticeably by turning it into a direct function call as a preparation
for cleaning up the compat handling.

Multiple complaints have been raised from the TFO users on the internet
stating that the TFO blackhole logic is too aggressive and gets falsely
triggered too often.
(e.g. https://blog.apnic.net/2021/07/05/tcp-fast-open-not-so-fast/)
Considering that most middleboxes no longer drop TFO packets, we decide
to disable the blackhole logic by setting
/proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_fastopen_blackhole_timeout_set to 0 by default.

tcp_grow_window() is using skb->len/skb->truesize to increase tp->rcv_ssthresh
which has a direct impact on advertized window sizes.
We added TCP coalescing in linux-3.4 & linux-3.5:
Instead of storing skbs with one or two MSS in receive queue (or OFO queue),
we try to append segments together to reduce memory overhead.
High performance network drivers tend to cook skb with 3 parts :
1) sk_buff structure (256 bytes)
2) skb->head contains room to copy headers as needed, and skb_shared_info
3) page fragment(s) containing the ~1514 bytes frame (or more depending on MTU)
Once coalesced into a previous skb, 1) and 2) are freed.
We can therefore tweak the way we compute len/truesize ratio knowing
that skb->truesize is inflated by 1) and 2) soon to be freed.
This is done only for in-order skb, or skb coalesced into OFO queue.
The result is that low rate flows no longer pay the memory price of having
low GRO aggregation factor. Same result for drivers not using GRO.
This is critical to allow a big enough receiver window,
typically tcp_rmem[2] / 2.
We have been using this at Google for about 5 years, it is due time
to make it upstream.

For tcp sockets, sk->sk_write_space is most probably sk_stream_write_space().
Other sk->sk_write_space() calls in TCP are slow path and do not deserve

Commit d26796ae58 ("udp: check udp sock encap_type in __udp_lib_err")
added checks for encapsulated sockets but it broke cases when there is
no implementation of encap_err_lookup for encapsulation, i.e. ESP in
UDP encapsulation. Fix it by calling encap_err_lookup only if socket
implements this method otherwise treat it as legal socket.

Root in init user namespace can modify /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
without CAP_NET_ADMIN, this doesn't follow the principle of
capabilities. For example, let's take a look at netdev_store(),
root can't modify netdev attribute without CAP_NET_ADMIN.
So let's keep the consistency of permission check logic.

veth: more flexible channels number configuration
XDP setups can benefit from multiple veth RX/TX queues. Currently
veth allow setting such number only at creation time via the
'numrxqueues' and 'numtxqueues' parameters.
This series introduces support for the ethtool set_channel operation
and allows configuring the queue number via a new module parameter.
The veth default configuration is not changed.
Finally self-tests are updated to check the new features, with both
valid and invalid arguments.
This iteration is a rebase of the most recent RFC, it does not provide
a module parameter to configure the default number of queues, but I
think could be worthy
RFC v1 -> RFC v2:
- report more consistent 'combined' count
- make set_channel as resilient as possible to errors
- drop module parameter - but I would still consider it.
- more self-tests

net namespace can create up to 64K tcp and dccp ports and force kernel
to allocate up to several megabytes of memory per netns
for inet_bind_bucket objects.
It makes sense to account for them to restrict the host's memory
consumption from inside the memcg-limited container.

An netadmin inside container can use 'ip a a' and 'ip r a'
to assign a large number of ipv4/ipv6 addresses and routing entries
and force kernel to allocate megabytes of unaccounted memory
for long-lived per-netdevice related kernel objects:
'struct in_ifaddr', 'struct inet6_ifaddr', 'struct fib6_node',
'struct rt6_info', 'struct fib_rules' and ip_fib caches.
These objects can be manually removed, though usually they lives
in memory till destroy of its net namespace.
It makes sense to account for them to restrict the host's memory
consumption from inside the memcg-limited container.
One of such objects is the 'struct fib6_node' mostly allocated in
net/ipv6/route.c::__ip6_ins_rt() inside the lock_bh()/unlock_bh() section:
write_lock_bh(&table->tb6_lock);
err = fib6_add(&table->tb6_root, rt, info, mxc);
write_unlock_bh(&table->tb6_lock);
In this case it is not enough to simply add SLAB_ACCOUNT to corresponding
kmem cache. The proper memory cgroup still cannot be found due to the
incorrect 'in_interrupt()' check used in memcg_kmem_bypass().
Obsoleted in_interrupt() does not describe real execution context properly.
>From include/linux/preempt.h:
The following macros are deprecated and should not be used in new code:
in_interrupt() - We're in NMI,IRQ,SoftIRQ context or have BH disabled
To verify the current execution context new macro should be used instead:
in_task() - We're in task context

tfo_active_disable_stamp is read and written locklessly.
We need to annotate these accesses appropriately.
Then, we need to perform the atomic_inc(tfo_active_disable_times)
after the timestamp has been updated, and thus add barriers
to make sure tcp_fastopen_active_should_disable() wont read
a stale timestamp.
