smc_lgr_cleanup_early() schedules the free worker with delay. DMB
unregistering occurs in this delayed worker increasing the risk
to reach the SMCD SBA limit without need. Terminate the
linkgroup immediately, since termination means early DMB unregistering.
For SMCD the global smc_server_lgr_pending lock is given up early.
A linkgroup to be given up with smc_lgr_cleanup_early() may already
contain more than one connection. Using __smc_lgr_terminate() in
smc_lgr_cleanup_early() covers this.

When an ISM device is removed, all its linkgroups are terminated,
i.e. all the corresponding connections are killed.
Connection killing invokes smc_close_active_abort(), which decreases
the sock refcount for certain states to simulate passive closing.
And it cancels the close worker and has to give up the sock lock for
this timeframe. This opens the door for a passive close worker or a
socket close to run in between. In this case smc_close_active_abort() and
passive close worker resp. smc_release() might do a sock_put for passive
closing. This causes:

SMC tries to make use of SMCD first. If a problem shows up,
it tries to switch to SMCR. If the SMCD initializing problem shows

Older SMCR implementations had no link failover support and used one
link only. Because the handshake protocol requires to try the
establishment of a second link the old code sent a fake add_link message
and declined any server response afterwards.
The current code supports multiple links and inspects the received fake
add_link message more closely. To tolerate the fake add_link messages
smc_llc_is_local_add_link() needs an improved check of the message to
be able to separate between locally enqueued and fake add_link messages.
And smc_llc_cli_add_link() needs to check if the provided qp_mtu size is
invalid and reject the add_link request in that case.

When the maximum dmb buffer limit for an ism device is reached no more

The UDP reuseport conflict was a little bit tricky.
The net-next code, via bpf-next, extracted the reuseport handling
into a helper so that the BPF sk lookup code could invoke it.
At the same time, the logic for reuseport handling of unconnected
sockets changed via commit efc6b6f6c3
which changed the logic to carry on the reuseport result into the
rest of the lookup loop if we do not return immediately.
This requires moving the reuseport_has_conns() logic into the callers.
While we are here, get rid of inline directives as they do not belong
in foo.c files.
The other changes were cases of more straightforward overlapping
modifications.

There is a current limit of 1920 registered dmb buffers per ISM device
for smc-d. One link group can contain 255 connections, each connection
is using one dmb buffer. When the connection is closed then the
registered buffer is held in a queue and is reused by the next
connection. When a link group is 'full' then another link group is
created and uses an own buffer pool. The link groups are added to a
list using list_add() which puts a new link group to the first position
in the list.
In the situation that many connections are opened (>1920) and a few of
them stay open while others are closed quickly we end up with at least 8
link groups. For a new connection a matching link group is looked up,
iterating over the list of link groups. The trailing 7 link groups
all have registered dmb buffers which could be reused, while the first
link group has only a few dmb buffers and then hit the 1920 limit.
Because the first link group is not full (255 connection limit not
reached) it is chosen and finally the connection falls back to TCP
because there is no dmb buffer available in this link group.
There are multiple ways to fix that: using list_add_tail() allows
to scan older link groups first for free buffers which ensures that
buffers are reused first. This fixes the problem for smc-r link groups
as well. For smc-d there is an even better way to address this problem
because smc-d does not have the 255 connections per link group limit.
So fix the problem for smc-d by allowing large link groups.

spinlock while calling infiniband op get_netdev(). At least for mlx5
the get_netdev operation wants mutex serialization, which conflicts
with the smc_ib_devices spinlock.
This patch switches the smc_ib_devices spinlock into a mutex to

decreasing, but there are still more than 2400 instances.
This commit finishes the conversion. While I touched the lines,

There are a variety of indentation styles found.
a) 4 spaces + '---help---'
b) 7 spaces + '---help---'
c) 8 spaces + '---help---'
d) 1 space + 1 tab + '---help---'
e) 1 tab + '---help---' (correct indentation)

When a client is added it isn't allowed to fail, but all the client's have
various failure paths within their add routines.
This creates the very fringe condition where the client was added, failed
during add and didn't set the client_data. The core code will then still
call other client_data centric ops like remove(), rename(), get_nl_info(),
and get_net_dev_by_params() with NULL client_data - which is confusing and
unexpected.
If the add() callback fails, then do not call any more client ops for the
device, even remove.
Remove all the now redundant checks for NULL client_data in ops callbacks.
Update all the add() callbacks to return error codes
appropriately. EOPNOTSUPP is used for cases where the ULP does not support
the ib_device - eg because it only works with IB.

According to RFC 7609, all CLC messages contain a peer ID that consists
of a unique instance ID and the MAC address of one of the host's RoCE
devices. But if a SMC-R connection cannot be established, e.g., because
no matching pnet table entry is found, the current implementation uses a
zero value in the CLC decline message although the host's peer ID is set
to a proper value.
If no RoCE and no ISM device is usable for a connection, there is no LGR
and the LGR check in smc_clc_send_decline() prevents that the peer ID is
copied into the CLC decline message for both SMC-D and SMC-R. So, this
patch modifies the check to also accept the case of no LGR. Also, only a

If an SMC connection to a certain peer is setup the first time,
a new linkgroup is created. In case of setup failures, such a
linkgroup is unusable and should disappear. As a first step the
linkgroup is removed from the linkgroup list in smc_lgr_forget().
There are 2 problems:
smc_listen_decline() might be called before linkgroup creation
resulting in a crash due to calling smc_lgr_forget() with
parameter NULL.
If a setup failure occurs after linkgroup creation, the connection
is never unregistered from the linkgroup, preventing linkgroup
freeing.
This patch introduces an enhanced smc_lgr_cleanup_early() function
which
* contains a linkgroup check for early smc_listen_decline()
invocations
* invokes smc_conn_free() to guarantee unregistering of the
connection.
* schedules fast linkgroup removal of the unusable linkgroup
And the unused function smcd_conn_free() is removed from smc_core.h.

FASTOPEN does not work with SMC-sockets. Since SMC allows fallback to
TCP native during connection start, the FASTOPEN setsockopts trigger
this fallback, if the SMC-socket is still in state SMC_INIT.
But if a FASTOPEN setsockopt is called after a non-blocking connect(),
this is broken, and fallback does not make sense.
This change complements
commit cd2063604e ("net/smc: avoid fallback in case of non-blocking connect")

SMCD link group termination is called when peer signals its shutdown
of its corresponding link group. For regular shutdowns no connections
exist anymore. For abnormal shutdowns connections must be killed and
their DMBs must be unregistered immediately. That means the SMCR method

For SMC sockets forced to fallback to TCP, the file is propagated
from the outer SMC to the internal TCP socket. When closing the SMC
socket, the internal TCP socket file pointer must be restored to the
original NULL value, otherwise memory leaks may show up (found with
CONFIG_DEBUG_KMEMLEAK).
The internal TCP socket is released in smc_clcsock_release(), which
calls __sock_release() function in net/socket.c. This calls the

This patch removes variables and callback these are related to the nested
device structure.
devices that can be nested have their own nest_level variable that
represents the depth of nested devices.
In the previous patch, new {lower/upper}_level variables are added and
they replace old private nest_level variable.
So, this patch removes all 'nest_level' variables.
In order to avoid lockdep warning, ->ndo_get_lock_subclass() was added
to get lockdep subclass value, which is actually lower nested depth value.
But now, they use the dynamic lockdep key to avoid lockdep warning instead
of the subclass.

smc_rx_recvmsg() first checks if data is available, and then if
RCV_SHUTDOWN is set. There is a race when smc_cdc_msg_recv_action() runs
in between these 2 checks, receives data and sets RCV_SHUTDOWN.

to smc_lgr_list, thus is accessible from other context.
Although link group creation is serialized by
smc_create_lgr_pending, the new link group may still be accessed
concurrently. For example, if ib_device is no longer active,
smc_ib_port_event_work() will call smc_port_terminate(), which

The FLUSH command is used to empty the pnet table. No return code is
expected from the command. Commit a9d8b0b1e3d6 added namespace support
for the pnet table and changed the FLUSH command processing to call
smc_pnet_remove_by_pnetid() to remove the pnet entries. This function
returns -ENOENT when no entry was deleted, which is now the return code
of the FLUSH command. As a result the FLUSH command will return an error
when the pnet table is already empty.

fcntl(fd, F_SETOWN, getpid()) selects the recipient of SIGURG signals
that are delivered when out-of-band data arrives on socket fd.
If an SMC socket program makes use of such an fcntl() call, it fails

When the clcsock is already released using sock_release() and a pending

by canceling and waiting for the work to complete first. Because the

Since maxattr is common, the policy can't really differ sanely,
so make it common as well.
The only user that did in fact manage to make a non-common policy
is taskstats, which has to be really careful about it (since it's
still using a common maxattr!). This is no longer supported, but
we can fake it using pre_doit.
This reduces the size of e.g. nl80211.o (which has lots of commands):
text data bss dec hex filename
398745 14323 2240 415308 6564c net/wireless/nl80211.o (before)
397913 14331 2240 414484 65314 net/wireless/nl80211.o (after)
--------------------------------
-832 +8 0 -824
Which is obviously just 8 bytes for each command, and an added 8
bytes for the new policy pointer. I'm not sure why the ops list is
counted as .text though.
Most of the code transformations were done using the following spatch:
@ops@
identifier OPS;
expression POLICY;
@@
struct genl_ops OPS[] = {
...,
{
- .policy = POLICY,

...

the cb->data as ops, which we want to change in a later genl patch.

If a device does not have a pnetid, users can set a temporary pnetid for
said device in the pnet table. This patch reworks the pnet table to make
it more flexible. Multiple entries with the same pnetid but differing
devices are now allowed. Additionally, the netlink interface now sends
each mapping from pnetid to device separately to the user while
maintaining the message format existing applications might expect. Also,
the SMC data structure for ib devices already has a pnetid attribute.
So, it is used to store the user defined pnetids. As a result, the pnet
table entries are only used for netdevs.

In some scenarios a separate consumer cursor update is necessary.
The decision is made in smc_tx_consumer_cursor_update(). The
sender_free computation could be wrong:
The rx confirmed cursor is always smaller than or equal to the
rx producer cursor. The parameters in the smc_curs_diff() call
have to be exchanged, otherwise sender_free might even be negative.
And if more data arrives local_rx_ctrl.prod might be updated, enabling
a cursor difference between local_rx_ctrl.prod and rx confirmed cursor
larger than the RMB size. This case is not covered by smc_curs_diff().
Thus function smc_curs_diff_large() is introduced here.

Comparing an int to a size, which is unsigned, causes the int to become
unsigned, giving the wrong result. kernel_sendmsg can return a negative
error code.

Al Viro pointed out that since there is only one pipe buffer type to which
new data can be appended, it isn't necessary to have a ->can_merge field in
struct pipe_buf_operations, we can just check for a magic type.

Lots of conflicts, by happily all cases of overlapping
changes, parallel adds, things of that nature.
Thanks to Stephen Rothwell, Saeed Mahameed, and others
for their guidance in these resolutions.

clcsock can be released while kernel_accept() references it in TCP
listen worker. Also, clcsock needs to wake up before released if TCP
fallback is used and the clcsock is blocked by accept. Add a lock to
safely release clcsock and call kernel_sock_shutdown() to wake up
clcsock from accept in smc_release().

When an rmb is no longer in use by a connection, unregister its rkey at
the remote peer with an LLC DELETE RKEY message. With this change,
unused buffers held in the buffer pool are no longer registered at the
remote peer. They are registered before the buffer is actually used and
unregistered when they are no longer used by a connection.

For easier reading move the unlock of mutex smc_create_lgr_pending into
smc_listen_work(), i.e. into the function the mutex has been locked.
No functional change.

After sending one of the initial LLC messages CONFIRM LINK or
ADD LINK, there is already a wait for the LLC response. It does
not make sense to wait another long time for a CLC DECLINE. Thus
this patch introduces a shorter wait time for these cases.

If a link is terminated that has never reached the active state,
there is no need to trigger an LLC DELETE LINK.

If connection initialization fails for the LLC CONFIRM LINK or the
LLC ADD LINK step, fallback to TCP should be enabled. Thus
the negative return code -EAGAIN should switch to a positive timeout
reason code in these cases, and the internal CLC socket should
not have a set sk_err.
