The "Clear Error Unit" may be smaller than the ECC unit size on some
devices. For example, poison may be tracked at 64-byte alignment even
though the ECC unit is larger. Unless / until the ACPI specification
provides a non-ambiguous way to communicate this property do not expose
this to userspace.
Software that had been using this property must already be prepared for
the case where the property is not provided on older kernels, so it is
safe to remove this attribute.

We ended up with an ugly conflict between fixes and next in ftrace.h
involving multiple nested ifdefs, and the automatic resolution is
wrong. So merge fixes into next so we can fix it up.
Currently we see a kernel-oops reported on Power-9 while attaching a
context to an AFU, with radix-mode and sysfs attr 'prefault_mode' set
to anything other than 'none'. The backtrace of the oops is of this
form:

The issue is caused as on Power-8 the AFU attr 'prefault_mode' was
used to improve initial storage fault performance by prefaulting
process segments. However on Power-9 with radix mode we don't have
Storage-Segments that we can prefault. Also prefaulting process Pages
will be too costly and fine-grained.
Hence, since the prefaulting mechanism doesn't makes sense of
radix-mode, this patch updates prefault_mode_store() to not allow any
other value apart from CXL_PREFAULT_NONE when radix mode is enabled.

Currently, the USB hub core waits for 50 ms after enumerating the
device. This was added to help "some high speed devices" to
enumerate (b789696af8 "[PATCH] USB: relax usbcore reset timings").
On some devices, the time-to-active is important, so we provide
a per-port option to reduce the time to what the USB specification
requires: 10 ms.

The "old" enumeration scheme is considerably faster (it takes
~244ms instead of ~356ms to get the descriptor).
It is currently only possible to use the old scheme globally
(/sys/module/usbcore/parameters/old_scheme_first), which is not
desirable as the new scheme was introduced to increase compatibility
with more devices.
However, in our case, we care about time-to-active for a specific
USB device (which we make the firmware for), on a specific port
(that is pogo-pin based: not a standard USB port). This new
sysfs option makes it possible to use the old scheme on a single
port only.

need to split checkpoint to do trim in batch, merge it and obsolete
related sysfs entry.

If/when file data signatures are distributed with the file data, this
patch will not be needed. In the current environment where only some
files are signed, the ability to differentiate between file systems is
needed. Some file systems consider the file system magic number
internal to the file system.
This patch defines a new IMA policy condition named "fsname", based on
the superblock's file_system_type (sb->s_type) name. This allows policy
rules to be expressed in terms of the filesystem name.
The following sample rules require file signatures on rootfs files
executed or mmap'ed.

Sites may wish to provide additional metadata alongside files in order
to make more fine-grained security decisions[1]. The security of this is
enhanced if this metadata is protected, something that EVM makes
possible. However, the kernel cannot know about the set of extended
attributes that local admins may wish to protect, and hardcoding this
policy in the kernel makes it difficult to change over time and less
convenient for distributions to enable.
This patch adds a new /sys/kernel/security/integrity/evm/evm_xattrs node,
which can be read to obtain the current set of EVM-protected extended
attributes or written to in order to add new entries. Extending this list
will not change the validity of any existing signatures provided that the
file in question does not have any of the additional extended attributes -
missing xattrs are skipped when calculating the EVM hash.
[1] For instance, a package manager could install information about the
package uploader in an additional extended attribute. Local LSM policy
could then be associated with that extended attribute in order to
restrict the privileges available to packages from less trusted
uploaders.

unnecessary local variables.
- Fix wrong interrupt type.
- Avoid unnecessary double clear of interrupt.
- Simplify proximity calibration call which did various things
unrelated to actually calibrating.
- Separate control of the proximity and ALS interrupts.
- Improve consistency of logging.
- Separate ALS and proximity persistence settings as they have
separate hardware controls.
- Tidy up variable ordering.
- Add Brian to copyright notice given consider work on this driver.
- Take advantage of hardware support for I2C address auto increment.
- Combine individuaal enable and period attributes for the two
directions on the threshold events into a single value as the
hardware doesn't separate them.
- Move integration_time* attributes from light channel to
intensity value as they effect the intensity readings directly
and the light reading only indirectly. Hence this better
reflects reality. Also move the calibscale_available.
- Avoid returning an error in the IRQ handler.
- Hard code the reg value in _clear_interrupts as it only takes
one value in the code. Result is the function has little
purpose so opencode the two remaining i2c_smbus_write_byte
calls.
- Drop some unnecessary checking of the chip status register.
- Tidy up return path in _write_interrupt_config.
- Tidy up the ID verification code.
- Move the power and diode settings defines into the header as these
are needed for platform data configuration.
- Various renames and comment cleanups for consistency and clarity.
- Use actual device defaults for default startup settings.
- SPDX
- Add some range sanity checking to sysfs attribute writes.
- Don't provide event interfaces if the interrupt line isn't available.
- Use IIO_CONST_ATTR macro for calibscale_available as it's a constant
string.
- Fix the integration time and lux equations.
- Make device IDs explicit index values in the device_channel_config array.
There are two places pointing to an unexisting "m.chehab@kernel.org"
email. I never had such email, so, I'm unsure how it ends there.
Anyway, it is plain wrong.
While here, use my canonical e-mail on a bunch of places that

all places will be pointing to the same SMTP server.

Add the sysfs file for the new vulerability. It does not do much except
show the words 'Vulnerable' for recent x86 cores.
Intel cores prior to family 6 are known not to be vulnerable, and so are
some Atoms and some Xeon Phi.
It assumes that older Cyrix, Centaur, etc. cores are immune.

This patch adds "driver_override" device attribute for rpmsg_device which
will allow users to explicitly specify the rpmsg_driver to be used via
sysfs entry.
The "driver_override" device attribute implemented here is very similar
to "driver_override" implemented for platform, pci, and amba bus types.
One important use-case of "driver_override" device attribute is to force
use of rpmsg_chrdev driver for certain rpmsg_device instances.

This commit adds the 'usb_type' property to represent USB supplies
which can report a number of different types based on a connection
event.
Examples of this already exist in drivers whereby the existing 'type'
property is updated, based on an event, to represent what was
connected (e.g. USB, USB_DCP, USB_ACA, ...). Current implementations
however don't show all supported connectable types, so this knowledge
has to be exlicitly known for each driver that supports this.
The 'usb_type' property is intended to fill this void and show users
all possible USB types supported by a driver. The property, when read,
shows all available types for the driver, and the one currently chosen
is highlighted/bracketed. It is expected that the 'type' property
would then just show the top-level type 'USB', and this would be
static.
Currently the 'usb_type' enum contains all of the USB variant types
that exist for the 'type' enum at this time, and in addition has
SDP and PPS types. The mirroring is intentional so as to not impact
existing usage of the 'type' property.

There are no contents changes in the documentation, except few spelling

miss some places that needed markup and add some markup where it was not

- introduce fsync_mode to enforce posix or not
- nowait aio support
- add lost_found feature to keep dangling inodes
- reserve bits for future fsverity feature

Bug fix:
- don't use highmem for dentry pages
- align memory boundary for bitops
- truncate preallocated blocks in write errors
- guarantee i_times on fsync call
- clear CP_TRIMMED_FLAG correctly
- prevent node chain loop during recovery
- avoid data race between atomic write and background cleaning
- avoid unnecessary selinux violation warnings on resgid option
- GFP_NOFS to avoid deadlock in quota and read paths

Here is the big set of Staging/IIO driver patches for 4.17-rc1.
It is a lot, over 500 changes, but not huge by previous kernel release
standards. We deleted more lines than we added again (27k added vs. 91k
remvoed), thanks to finally being able to delete the IRDA drivers and
networking code.
We also deleted the ccree crypto driver, but that's coming back in
through the crypto tree to you, in a much cleaned-up form.
Added this round is at lot of "mt7621" device support, which is for an
embedded device that Neil Brown cares about, and of course a handful of
new IIO drivers as well.
And finally, the fsl-mc core code moved out of the staging tree to the
"real" part of the kernel, which is nice to see happen as well.
Full details are in the shortlog, which has all of the tiny cleanup
patches described.
All of these have been in linux-next for a while with no reported
issues.

Here is the big set of USB and PHY driver patches for 4.17-rc1.
Lots of USB typeC work happened this round, with code moving from the
staging directory into the "real" part of the kernel, as well as new
infrastructure being added to be able to handle the different types of
"roles" that typeC requires.
There is also the normal huge set of USB gadget controller and driver

This does add an IPMI BMC server-side driver, to allow a Linux
system to act as an IPMI controller. That's the biggest change,
but it is just a new driver that is fairly narrow in use.
The other largish change is removing ACPI SPMI probe support,
which should have never really been there in the beginning.

Add a new attribute group called "s2idle" under the sysfs directory
of each cpuidle state that supports the ->enter_s2idle callback
and put two new attributes, "usage" and "time", into that group to
represent the number of times the given state was requested for
suspend-to-idle and the total time spent in suspend-to-idle after
requesting that state, respectively.
That will allow diagnostic information related to suspend-to-idle
to be collected without enabling advanced debug features and
analyzing dmesg output.

The existing BPRM_CHECK functionality in IMA validates against the
credentials of the existing process, not any new credentials that the
child process may transition to. Add an additional CREDS_CHECK target
and refactor IMA to pass the appropriate creds structure. In
ima_bprm_check(), check with both the existing process credentials and
the credentials that will be committed when the new process is started.
This will not change behaviour unless the system policy is extended to
include CREDS_CHECK targets - BPRM_CHECK will continue to check the same
credentials that it did previously.
After this patch, an IMA policy rule along the lines of:
measure func=CREDS_CHECK subj_type=unconfined_t
will trigger if a process is executed and runs as unconfined_t, ignoring
the context of the parent process. This is in contrast to:
measure func=BPRM_CHECK subj_type=unconfined_t
which will trigger if the process that calls exec() is already executing
in unconfined_t, ignoring the context that the child process executes
into.

USB role switch is a device that can be used to choose the
data role for USB connector. With dual-role capable USB
controllers, the controller itself will be the switch, but
on some platforms the USB host and device controllers are
separate IPs and there is a mux between them and the
connector. On those platforms the mux driver will need to
register the switch.
With USB Type-C connectors, the host-to-device relationship
is negotiated over the Configuration Channel (CC). That
means the USB Type-C drivers need to be in control of the
role switch. The class provides a simple API for the USB
Type-C drivers for the control.
For other types of USB connectors (mainly microAB) the class
provides user space control via sysfs attribute file that
can be used to request role swapping from the switch.

For some userspace applications information on the number of
over-current conditions at specific USB hub ports is relevant.
In our case we have a series of USB hardware (using the cp210x driver)
which communicates using a proprietary protocol. These devices sometimes
trigger an over-current situation on some hubs. In case of such an
over-current situation the USB devices offer an interface for reducing
the max used power. As these conditions are quite rare and imply
performance reductions of the device we don't want to reduce the max
power always.
Therefore give user-space applications the possibility to react
adequately by introducing an over_current_counter in the usb port struct
which is exported via sysfs.

UFS host controllers may support an autonomous power management feature
called the Auto-Hibernate Idle Timer. The timer is set to the number of
microseconds of idle time before the UFS host controller will autonomously
put the link into Hibernate state. That will save power at the expense of
increased latency. Any access to the host controller interface registers
will automatically put the link out of Hibernate state. So once configured,
the feature is transparent to the driver.
Expose the Auto-Hibernate Idle Timer value via SysFS to allow users to
choose between power efficiency or lower latency. Set a default value of
150 ms.

Introduce a driver for the ACPI Time and Alarm Device (TAD) based on
Section 9.18 of ACPI 6.2.
This driver only supports the system wakeup capabilities of the TAD
which are mandatory. Support for the RTC capabilities of the TAD
will be added to it in the future.
This driver is entirely sysfs-based. It provides attributes (under
the TAD platform device) to allow user space to manage the AC and DC
wakeup timers of the TAD: set and read their values, set and check
their expire timer wake policies, check and clear their status and
check the capabilities of the TAD reported by AML. The DC timer
attributes are only present if the TAD supports a separate DC alarm
timer.
The wakeup events handling and power management of the TAD is
expected to be taken care of by the ACPI PM domain attached to its
platform device.

This change introduces an 'external mode' for GPIO-based FSI masters,
allowing the clock and data lines to be driven by an external source.
For example, external mode is selected by a user when an external debug
device is attached to the FSI pins.
To do this, we need to set specific states for the trans, mux and enable
GPIOs, and prevent access to clk & data from the FSI core code (by
returning EBUSY).
External mode is controlled by a sysfs attribute, so add the relevant

Preboot ACL is a mechanism that allows connecting Thunderbolt devices
boot time in more secure way than the legacy Thunderbolt boot support.
As with the legacy boot option, this also needs to be enabled from the
BIOS before booting is allowed. Difference to the legacy mode is that
the userspace software explicitly adds device UUIDs by sending a special
message to the ICM firmware. Only the devices listed in the boot ACL are
connected automatically during the boot. This works in both "user" and
"secure" security levels.
We implement this in Linux by exposing a new sysfs attribute (boot_acl)
below each Thunderbolt domain. The userspace software can then update
the full list as needed.

In various cases, Thunderbolt device can be connected by ICM on boot
without waiting for approval from user. Most cases are related to
OEM-specific BIOS configurations. This information is interesting for
user-space as if the device isn't in SW ACL, it may create a friction in
the user experience where the device is automatically authorized if it's
connected on boot but requires an explicit user action if connected
after OS is up. User-space can use this information to suggest adding
the device to SW ACL for auto-authorization on later connections.

Switch the parent of the nvmem device to the parent of the rtc device so it
can be registered before the RTC.
This is a small change in the ABI as the nvmem moves out of the
/sys/class/rtc/rtcX folder to be under the parent device folder (that is
where the previous nvram files where registered).
However, it is still available under its correct location,
/sys/bus/nvmem/devices which is the one that should be used by userspace
applications.
The other benefit is that the nvmem device can stay registered even if the
rtc registration fails. Or it is possible to not register the rtc if the
nvmem registration failed.
Finally, it makes a lot of sense for devices that actually have different
i2c or spi addresses for the RTC and the EEPROM. That is basically how it
would end up when using MFD or even completely separate devices.

Jonathan writes:
First round of new devices, features and cleanups for IIO in the 4.17 cycle.
Outside of IIO
* Strongly typed 64bit int_sqrt function needed by the mlx90632
New device support
* adc081s
- New driver supporting adc081s, adc101s and adc121s TI ADCs.
* ad5272
- New driver supproting the ad5272 and ad5274 ADI digital potentiometers
with DT bindings.
* axp20x_adc
- support the AXP813 ADC - includes rework patches to prepare for this.
* mlx90632
- New driver with dt bindings for this IR temperature sensor.
Features
* axp20x_adc
- Add DT bindings and probing.
* dht11
- The sensor has a wider range than advertised in the datasheet - support it.
* st_lsm6dsx
- Add hardware timestamp su9pport.
Cleanups
* ABI docs
- Update email contact for Matt Ranostay
* SPDX changes
- Matt Ranostay has moved his drivers over to SPDX. Currently we are making
this an author choice in IIO.
* ad7192
- Disable burnout current on misconfiguration. No actually effect as
they simply won't work otherwise.
* ad7476
- Drop a license definition that was replicating information in SPDX tag.
* ade7758
- Expand buf_lock to cover both buffer and state protection allowing
unintented uses of mlock in the core to be removed.
* ade7759
- Align parameters to opening parenthesis.
* at91_adc
- Depend on sysfs instead of selecting it - for try wide consistency.
* ccs811
- trivial naming type for a define.
* ep93xx
- Drop a redundant return as a result checking platform_get_resource.
* hts221
- Regmap conversion which simplifies the driver somewhat.
- Clean up some restricted endian cast warnings.
- Drop a trailing whitespace from a comment
- Drop an unnecessary get_unaligned by changing to the right 16bit data type.
* ms5611
- Fix coding style in the probe function (whitespace)
* st_accel
- Use strlcpy instead of strncpy to avoid potentially truncating a string.
Change email contact for ABI documention to author's current employer
on the following files:
* sysfs-bus-iio-chemical-vz89x
* sysfs-bus-iio-proximity-as3935

Here is the big pull request for char/misc drivers for 4.16-rc1.
There's a lot of stuff in here. Three new driver subsystems were added
for various types of hardware busses:
- siox
- slimbus
- soundwire
as well as a new vboxguest subsystem for the VirtualBox hypervisor
drivers.
There's also big updates from the FPGA subsystem, lots of Android binder
fixes, the usual handful of hyper-v updates, and lots of other smaller
driver updates.
All of these have been in linux-next for a long time, with no reported
issues.

Here is the set of "big" driver core patches for 4.16-rc1.
The majority of the work here is in the firmware subsystem, with reworks
to try to attempt to make the code easier to handle in the long run, but
no functional change. There's also some tree-wide sysfs attribute
fixups with lots of acks from the various subsystem maintainers, as well
as a handful of other normal fixes and changes.
And finally, some license cleanups for the driver core and sysfs code.

Here is the big Staging and IIO driver patches for 4.16-rc1.
There is the normal amount of new IIO drivers added, like all releases.
The networking IPX and the ncpfs filesystem are moved into the staging
tree, as they are on their way out of the kernel due to lack of use
anymore.
The visorbus subsystem finall has started moving out of the staging tree
to the "real" part of the kernel, and the most and fsl-mc codebases are
almost ready to move out, that will probably happen for 4.17-rc1 if all
goes well.
Other than that, there is a bunch of license header cleanups in the
tree, along with the normal amount of coding style churn that we all
know and love for this codebase. I also got frustrated at the
Meltdown/Spectre mess and took it out on the dgnc tty driver, deleting
huge chunks of it that were never even being used.
Full details of everything is in the shortlog.
All of these patches have been in linux-next for a while with no
reported issues.

Pull integrity updates from James Morris:
"This contains a mixture of bug fixes, code cleanup, and new
functionality. Of note is the integrity cache locking fix, file change
detection, and support for a new EVM portable and immutable signature
type.
The re-introduction of the integrity cache lock (iint) fixes the
problem of attempting to take the i_rwsem shared a second time, when
it was previously taken exclusively. Defining atomic flags resolves
the original iint/i_rwsem circular locking - accessing the file data
vs. modifying the file metadata. Although it fixes the O_DIRECT
problem as well, a subsequent patch is needed to remove the explicit
O_DIRECT prevention.
For performance reasons, detecting when a file has changed and needs
to be re-measured, re-appraised, and/or re-audited, was limited to
after the last writer has closed, and only if the file data has
changed. Detecting file change is based on i_version. For filesystems
that do not support i_version, remote filesystems, or userspace
filesystems, the file was measured, appraised and/or audited once and
never re-evaluated. Now local filesystems, which do not support
i_version or are not mounted with the i_version option, assume the
file has changed and are required to re-evaluate the file. This change
does not address detecting file change on remote or userspace
filesystems.
Unlike file data signatures, which can be included and distributed in
software packages (eg. rpm, deb), the existing EVM signature, which
protects the file metadata, could not be included in software
packages, as it includes file system specific information (eg. i_ino,
possibly the UUID). This pull request defines a new EVM portable and
immutable file metadata signature format, which can be included in
software packages"

Pull x86 pti updates from Thomas Gleixner:
"This contains:
- a PTI bugfix to avoid setting reserved CR3 bits when PCID is
disabled. This seems to cause issues on a virtual machine at least
and is incorrect according to the AMD manual.
- a PTI bugfix which disables the perf BTS facility if PTI is
enabled. The BTS AUX buffer is not globally visible and causes the
CPU to fault when the mapping disappears on switching CR3 to user
space. A full fix which restores BTS on PTI is non trivial and will
be worked on.
- PTI bugfixes for EFI and trusted boot which make sure that the user
space visible page table entries have the NX bit cleared
- removal of dead code in the PTI pagetable setup functions
- add PTI documentation
- add a selftest for vsyscall to verify that the kernel actually
implements what it advertises.
- a sysfs interface to expose vulnerability and mitigation
information so there is a coherent way for users to retrieve the
status.
- the initial spectre_v2 mitigations, aka retpoline:
+ The necessary ASM thunk and compiler support
+ The ASM variants of retpoline and the conversion of affected ASM
code
+ Make LFENCE serializing on AMD so it can be used as speculation
trap
+ The RSB fill after vmexit
- initial objtool support for retpoline
As I said in the status mail this is the most of the set of patches
which should go into 4.15 except two straight forward patches still on
hold:
- the retpoline add on of LFENCE which waits for ACKs
- the RSB fill after context switch
Both should be ready to go early next week and with that we'll have
covered the major holes of spectre_v2 and go back to normality"

SIOX is a bus system invented at Eckelmann AG to control their building
management and refrigeration systems. Traditionally the bus was
implemented on custom microcontrollers, today Linux based machines are
in use, too.
The topology on a SIOX bus looks as follows:
,------->--DCLK-->---------------+----------------------.
^ v v
,--------. ,----------------------. ,------
| | | ,--------------. | |
| |--->--DOUT-->---|->-|shift register|->-|--->---|
| | | `--------------' | |
| master | | device | | device
| | | ,--------------. | |
| |---<--DIN---<---|-<-|shift register|-<-|---<---|
| | | `--------------' | |
`--------' `----------------------' `------
v ^ ^
`----------DLD-------------------+----------------------'
There are two control lines (DCLK and DLD) driven from the bus master to
all devices in parallel and two daisy chained data lines, one for input
and one for output. DCLK is the clock to shift both chains by a single
bit. On an edge of DLD the devices latch both their input and output
shift registers.
This patch adds a framework for this bus type.

The builtin ima_appraise_tcb policy, which is specified on the boot
command line, can be replaced with a custom policy, normally early in
the boot process. Custom policies can be more restrictive in some ways,
like requiring file signatures, but can be less restrictive in other
ways, like not appraising mutable files. With a less restrictive policy
in place, files in the builtin policy might not be hashed and labeled
with a security.ima hash. On reboot, files which should be labeled in
the ima_appraise_tcb are not labeled, possibly preventing the system
from booting properly.
To resolve this problem, this patch extends the existing IMA policy
actions "measure", "dont_measure", "appraise", "dont_appraise", and
"audit" with "hash" and "dont_hash". The new "hash" action will write
the file hash as security.ima, but without requiring the file to be
appraised as well.
For example, the builtin ima_appraise_tcb policy includes the rule,
"appraise fowner=0". Adding the "hash fowner=0" rule to a custom
policy, will cause the needed file hashes to be calculated and written
as security.ima xattrs.

When EVM is enabled it forbids modification of metadata protected by
EVM unless there is already a valid EVM signature. If any modification
is made, the kernel will then generate a new EVM HMAC. However, this
does not map well on use cases which use only asymmetric EVM signatures,
as in this scenario the kernel is unable to generate new signatures.
This patch extends the /sys/kernel/security/evm interface to allow
userland to request that modification of these xattrs be permitted. This
is only permitted if no keys have already been loaded. In this
configuration, modifying the metadata will invalidate the EVM appraisal
on the file in question. This allows packaging systems to write out new
files, set the relevant extended attributes and then move them into
place.
There's also some refactoring of the use of evm_initialized in order to
avoid heading down codepaths that assume there's a key available.

xHCI compatible USB host controllers(i.e. super-speed USB3 controllers)
can be implemented with the Debug Capability(DbC). It presents a debug
device which is fully compliant with the USB framework and provides the
equivalent of a very high performance full-duplex serial link. The debug
capability operation model and registers interface are defined in 7.6.8
of the xHCI specification, revision 1.1.
The DbC debug device shares a root port with the xHCI host. By default,
the debug capability is disabled and the root port is assigned to xHCI.
When the DbC is enabled, the root port will be assigned to the DbC debug
device, and the xHCI sees nothing on this port. This implementation uses
a sysfs node named <dbc> under the xHCI device to manage the enabling
and disabling of the debug capability.
When the debug capability is enabled, it will present a debug device
through the debug port. This debug device is fully compliant with the
USB3 framework, and it can be enumerated by a debug host on the other
end of the USB link. As soon as the debug device is configured, a TTY
serial device named /dev/ttyDBC0 will be created.

If a task sleeps in a set of patched functions uninterruptedly, it could
block the whole transition indefinitely. Thus it may be useful to clear
its TIF_PATCH_PENDING to allow the process to finish.
Admin can do that now by writing to force sysfs attribute in livepatch
sysfs directory. TIF_PATCH_PENDING is then cleared for all tasks and the
transition can finish successfully.
Important note! Administrator should not use this feature without a
clearance from a patch distributor. It must be checked that by doing so
the consistency model guarantees are not violated. Removal (rmmod) of
patch modules is permanently disabled when the feature is used. It
cannot be guaranteed there is no task sleeping in such module.

Live patching consistency model is of LEAVE_PATCHED_SET and
SWITCH_THREAD. This means that all tasks in the system have to be marked
one by one as safe to call a new patched function. Safe means when a
task is not (sleeping) in a set of patched functions. That is, no
patched function is on the task's stack. Another clearly safe place is
the boundary between kernel and userspace. The patching waits for all
tasks to get outside of the patched set or to cross the boundary. The
transition is completed afterwards.
The problem is that a task can block the transition for quite a long
time, if not forever. It could sleep in a set of patched functions, for
example. Luckily we can force the task to leave the set by sending it a
fake signal, that is a signal with no data in signal pending structures
(no handler, no sign of proper signal delivered). Suspend/freezer use
this to freeze the tasks as well. The task gets TIF_SIGPENDING set and
is woken up (if it has been sleeping in the kernel before) or kicked by
rescheduling IPI (if it was running on other CPU). This causes the task
to go to kernel/userspace boundary where the signal would be handled and
the task would be marked as safe in terms of live patching.
There are tasks which are not affected by this technique though. The
fake signal is not sent to kthreads. They should be handled differently.
They can be woken up so they leave the patched set and their
TIF_PATCH_PENDING can be cleared thanks to stack checking.
For the sake of completeness, if the task is in TASK_RUNNING state but
not currently running on some CPU it doesn't get the IPI, but it would
eventually handle the signal anyway. Second, if the task runs in the
kernel (in TASK_RUNNING state) it gets the IPI, but the signal is not
handled on return from the interrupt. It would be handled on return to
the userspace in the future when the fake signal is sent again. Stack
checking deals with these cases in a better way.
If the task was sleeping in a syscall it would be woken by our fake
signal, it would check if TIF_SIGPENDING is set (by calling
signal_pending() predicate) and return ERESTART* or EINTR. Syscalls with
ERESTART* return values are restarted in case of the fake signal (see
do_signal()). EINTR is propagated back to the userspace program. This
could disturb the program, but...
* each process dealing with signals should react accordingly to EINTR
return values.
* syscalls returning EINTR happen to be quite common situation in the
system even if no fake signal is sent.
* freezer sends the fake signal and does not deal with EINTR anyhow.
Thus EINTR values are returned when the system is resumed.
The very safe marking is done in architectures' "entry" on syscall and
interrupt/exception exit paths, and in a stack checking functions of
livepatch. TIF_PATCH_PENDING is cleared and the next
recalc_sigpending() drops TIF_SIGPENDING. In connection with this, also
call klp_update_patch_state() before do_signal(), so that
recalc_sigpending() in dequeue_signal() can clear TIF_PATCH_PENDING
immediately and thus prevent a double call of do_signal().
Note that the fake signal is not sent to stopped/traced tasks. Such task
prevents the patching to finish till it continues again (is not traced
anymore).
Last, sending the fake signal is not automatic. It is done only when
admin requests it by writing 1 to signal sysfs attribute in livepatch
sysfs directory.

In this round, we introduce sysfile-based quota support which is required
for Android by default. In addition, we allow that users are able to reserve
some blocks in runtime to mitigate performance drops in low free space.
Enhancement
- assign proper data segments according to write_hints given by user
- issue cache_flush on dirty devices only among multiple devices
- exploit cp_error flag and add more faults to enhance fault injection test
- conduct more readaheads during f2fs_readdir
- add a range for discard commands
Bug fix
- fix zero stat->st_blocks when inline_data is set
- drop crypto key and free stale memory pointer while evict_inode is failing
- fix some corner cases in free space and segment management
- fix wrong last_disk_size
This series includes lots of clean-ups and code enhancement in terms of xattr
operations, discard/flush command control. In addition, it adds versatile
debugfs entries to monitor f2fs status.

Here is the big set of char/misc and other driver subsystem patches for
4.15-rc1.
There are small changes all over here, hyperv driver updates, pcmcia
driver updates, w1 driver updats, vme driver updates, nvmem driver
updates, and lots of other little one-off driver updates as well. The
shortlog has the full details.
Note, there will be a merge conflict in drivers/misc/lkdtm_core.c when
merging to your tree as one lkdtm patch came in through the perf tree as
well as this one. The resolution is to take the const change that this
tree provides.
All of these have been in linux-next for quite a while with no reported
issues.

CORE:
- Fix the semantics of raw GPIO to actually be raw. No
inversion semantics as before, but also no open draining,
and allow the raw operations to affect lines used for
interrupts as the caller supposedly knows what they are
doing if they are getting the big hammer.
- Rewrote the __inner_function() notation calls to names that
make more sense. I just find this kind of code disturbing.
- Drop the .irq_base() field from the gpiochip since now all
IRQs are mapped dynamically. This is nice.
- Support for .get_multiple() in the core driver API. This
allows us to read several GPIO lines with a single
register read. This has high value for some usecases: it
can be used to create oscilloscopes and signal analyzers
and other things that rely on reading several lines at
exactly the same instant. Also a generally nice
optimization. This uses the new assign_bit() macro from
the bitops lib that was ACKed by Andrew Morton and
is implemented for two drivers, one of them being the
generic MMIO driver so everyone using that will be able
to benefit from this.
- Do not allow requests of Open Drain and Open Source
setting of a GPIO line simultaneously. If the hardware
actually supports enabling both at the same time the
electrical result would be disastrous.
- A new interrupt chip core helper. This will be helpful
to deal with "banked" GPIOs, which means GPIO controllers
with several logical blocks of GPIO inside them. This
is several gpiochips per device in the device model, in
contrast to the case when there is a 1-to-1 relationship
between a device and a gpiochip.
NEW DRIVERS:
- Maxim MAX3191x industrial serializer, a very interesting
piece of professional I/O hardware.
- Uniphier GPIO driver. This is the GPIO block from the
recent Socionext (ex Fujitsu and Panasonic) platform.
- Tegra 186 driver. This is based on the new banked GPIO
infrastructure.
OTHER IMPROVEMENTS:
- Some documentation improvements.
- Wakeup support for the DesignWare DWAPB GPIO controller.
- Reset line support on the DesignWare DWAPB GPIO controller.
- Several non-critical bug fixes and improvements for the
Broadcom BRCMSTB driver.
- Misc non-critical bug fixes like exotic errorpaths, removal
of dead code etc.
- Explicit comments on fall-through switch() statements.
