Ralf Baechle d5341942d7 PCI: Make the struct pci_dev * argument of pci_fixup_irqs const.
Aside of the usual motivation for constification, this function has a
history of being abused a hook for interrupt and other fixups so I turned
this function const ages ago in the MIPS code but it should be done
treewide.

Due to function pointer passing in varous places a few other functions
had to be constified as well.

Chris Metcalf f133ecca9c arch/tile: more /proc and /sys file support
This change introduces a few of the less controversial /proc and
/proc/sys interfaces for tile, along with sysfs attributes for
various things that were originally proposed as /proc/tile files.
It also adjusts the "hardwall" proc API.

Arnd Bergmann reviewed the initial arch/tile submission, which
included a complete set of all the /proc/tile and /proc/sys/tile
knobs that we had added in a somewhat ad hoc way during initial
development, and provided feedback on where most of them should go.

One knob turned out to be similar enough to the existing
/proc/sys/debug/exception-trace that it was re-implemented to use
that model instead.

Another knob was /proc/tile/grid, which reported the "grid" dimensions
of a tile chip (e.g. 8x8 processors = 64-core chip). Arnd suggested
looking at sysfs for that, so this change moves that information
to a pair of sysfs attributes (chip_width and chip_height) in the
/sys/devices/system/cpu directory. We also put the "chip_serial"
and "chip_revision" information from our old /proc/tile/board file
as attributes in /sys/devices/system/cpu.

Other information collected via hypervisor APIs is now placed in
/sys/hypervisor. We create a /sys/hypervisor/type file (holding the
constant string "tilera") to be parallel with the Xen use of
/sys/hypervisor/type holding "xen". We create three top-level files,
"version" (the hypervisor's own version), "config_version" (the
version of the configuration file), and "hvconfig" (the contents of
the configuration file). The remaining information from our old
/proc/tile/board and /proc/tile/switch files becomes an attribute
group appearing under /sys/hypervisor/board/.

Finally, after some feedback from Arnd Bergmann for the previous
version of this patch, the /proc/tile/hardwall file is split up into
two conceptual parts. First, a directory /proc/tile/hardwall/ which
contains one file per active hardwall, each file named after the
hardwall's ID and holding a cpulist that says which cpus are enclosed by
the hardwall. Second, a /proc/PID file "hardwall" that is either
empty (for non-hardwall-using processes) or contains the hardwall ID.

Finally, this change pushes the /proc/sys/tile/unaligned_fixup/
directory, with knobs controlling the kernel code for handling the
fixup of unaligned exceptions.

Chris Metcalf 571d76acda arch/tile: support signal "exception-trace" hook
This change adds support for /proc/sys/debug/exception-trace to tile.
Like x86 and sparc, by default it is set to "1", generating a one-line
printk whenever a user process crashes. By setting it to "2", we get
a much more complete userspace diagnostic at crash time, including
a user-space backtrace, register dump, and memory dump around the
address of the crash.

Some vestiges of the Tilera-internal version of this support are
removed with this patch (the show_crashinfo variable and the
arch_coredump_signal function). We retain a "crashinfo" boot parameter
which allows you to set the boot-time value of exception-trace.

Chris Metcalf 18aecc2b64 arch/tile: finish enabling support for TILE-Gx 64-bit chip
This support was partially present in the existing code (look for
"__tilegx__" ifdefs) but with this change you can build a working
kernel using the TILE-Gx toolchain and ARCH=tilegx.

Most of these files are new, generally adding a foo_64.c file
where previously there was just a foo_32.c file.

The ARCH=tilegx directive redirects to arch/tile, not arch/tilegx,
using the existing SRCARCH mechanism in the top-level Makefile.

Changes to existing files:

- <asm/bitops.h> and <asm/bitops_32.h> changed to factor the
include of <asm-generic/bitops/non-atomic.h> in the common header.

- <asm/compat.h> and arch/tile/kernel/compat.c changed to remove
the "const" markers I had put on compat_sys_execve() when trying
to match some recent similar changes to the non-compat execve.
It turns out the compat version wasn't "upgraded" to use const.

- <asm/opcode-tile_64.h> and <asm/opcode_constants_64.h> were
previously included accidentally, with the 32-bit contents. Now
they have the proper 64-bit contents.

Finally, I had to hack the existing hacky drivers/input/input-compat.h
to add yet another "#ifdef" for INPUT_COMPAT_TEST (same as x86_64).

Chris Metcalf be84cb4383 compat: fixes to allow working with tile arch
The existing <asm-generic/unistd.h> mechanism doesn't really provide
enough to create the 64-bit "compat" ABI properly in a generic way,
since the compat ABI is a mix of things were you can re-use the 64-bit
versions of syscalls and things where you need a compat wrapper.

To provide this in the most direct way possible, I added two new macros
to go along with the existing __SYSCALL and __SC_3264 macros: __SC_COMP
and SC_COMP_3264. These macros take an additional argument, typically a
"compat_sys_xxx" function, which is passed to __SYSCALL if you define
__SYSCALL_COMPAT when including the header, resulting in a pointer to
the compat function being placed in the generated syscall table.

The change also adds some missing definitions to <linux/compat.h> so that
it actually has declarations for all the compat syscalls, since the
"[nr] = ##call" approach requires proper C declarations for all the
functions included in the syscall table.

Finally, compat.c defines compat_sys_sigpending() and
compat_sys_sigprocmask() even if the underlying architecture doesn't
request it, which tries to pull in undefined compat_old_sigset_t defines.
We need to guard those compat syscall definitions with appropriate
__ARCH_WANT_SYS_xxx ifdefs.

Oleg Nesterov ceca3c193e tile: do_hardwall_trap: do not play with task->sighand
1. do_hardwall_trap() checks ->sighand != NULL and then takes ->siglock.

This is unsafe even if the task can't run (I assume it is pinned to
the same CPU), its parent can reap the task and set ->sighand = NULL
right after this check. Even if the compiler dosn't read ->sighand
twice and this memory can't to away __group_send_sig_info() is wrong
   after that. Use do_send_sig_info().

2. Send SIGILL to the thread, not to the whole process. Unless it has
the handler or blocked this kills the whole thread-group as before.
IIUC, different threads can be bound to different rect's.

3. Check PF_EXITING instead of ->sighand. A zombie thread can go away
but its ->sighand can be !NULL.

Chris Metcalf 28d717411b arch/tile: various header improvements for building drivers
This change adds a number of missing headers in asm (fb.h, parport.h,
serial.h, and vga.h) using the minimal generic versions.

It also adds a number of missing interfaces that showed up as build
failures when trying to build various drivers not normally included in the
"tile" distribution: ioremap_wc(), memset_io(), io{read,write}{16,32}be(),
virt_to_bus(), bus_to_virt(), irq_canonicalize(), __pte(), __pgd(),
and __pmd(). I also added a cast in virt_to_page() since not all callers
pass a pointer.

I fixed <asm/stat.h> to properly include a __KERNEL__ guard for the
__ARCH_WANT_STAT64 symbol, and <asm/swab.h> to use __builtin_bswap32()
even for our 64-bit architecture, since the same code is produced.

I added an export for get_cycles(), since it's used in some modules.

And I made <arch/spr_def.h> properly include the __KERNEL__ guard,
even though it's not yet exported, since it likely will be soon.

Chris Metcalf df29ccb6c0 arch/tile: allow nonatomic stores to interoperate with fast atomic syscalls
This semantic was already true for atomic operations within the kernel,
and this change makes it true for the fast atomic syscalls (__NR_cmpxchg
and __NR_atomic_update) as well. Previously, user-space had to use
the fast atomic syscalls exclusively to update memory, since raw stores
could lose a race with the atomic update code even when the atomic update
hadn't actually modified the value.

With this change, we no longer write back the value to memory if it
hasn't changed. This allows certain types of idioms in user space to
work as expected, e.g. "atomic exchange" to acquire a spinlock, followed
by a raw store of zero to release the lock.

Tejun Heo 0415b00d17 percpu: Always align percpu output section to PAGE_SIZE
Percpu allocator honors alignment request upto PAGE_SIZE and both the
percpu addresses in the percpu address space and the translated kernel
addresses should be aligned accordingly. The calculation of the
former depends on the alignment of percpu output section in the kernel
image.

The linker script macros PERCPU_VADDR() and PERCPU() are used to
define this output section and the latter takes @align parameter.
Several architectures are using @align smaller than PAGE_SIZE breaking
percpu memory alignment.

This patch removes @align parameter from PERCPU(), renames it to
PERCPU_SECTION() and makes it always align to PAGE_SIZE. While at it,
add PCPU_SETUP_BUG_ON() checks such that alignment problems are
reliably detected and remove percpu alignment comment recently added
in workqueue.c as the condition would trigger BUG way before reaching
there.

For um, this patch raises the alignment of percpu area. As the area
is in .init, there shouldn't be any noticeable difference.

Chris Metcalf 76c567fbba arch/tile: support 4KB page size as well as 64KB
The Tilera architecture traditionally supports 64KB page sizes
to improve TLB utilization and improve performance when the
hardware is being used primarily to run a single application.

For more generic server scenarios, it can be beneficial to run
with 4KB page sizes, so this commit allows that to be specified
(by modifying the arch/tile/include/hv/pagesize.h header).

As part of this change, we also re-worked the PTE management
slightly so that PTE writes all go through a __set_pte() function
where we can do some additional validation. The set_pte_order()
function was eliminated since the "order" argument wasn't being used.

One bug uncovered was in the PCI DMA code, which wasn't properly
flushing the specified range. This was benign with 64KB pages,
but with 4KB pages we were getting some larger flushes wrong.

The per-cpu memory reservation code also needed updating to
conform with the newer percpu stuff; before it always chose 64KB,
and that was always correct, but with 4KB granularity we now have
to pay closer attention and reserve the amount of memory that will
be requested when the percpu code starts allocating.

Previously we used iret to atomically return to kernel PL with

now do that instead, since it's cleaner.

Chris Metcalf b2ce2bdaf9 arch/tile: stop disabling INTCTRL_1 interrupts during hypervisor downcalls
The problem was that this could lead to IPIs being disabled during
the softirq processing after a hypervisor downcall (e.g. for I/O),
since both IPI and device interrupts use the INCTRL_1 downcall mechanism.
When this happened at the wrong time, it could lead to deadlock.

Luckily, we were already maintaining the per-interrupt state we need,
and using it in the proper way in the hypervisor, so all we had to do
was to change Linux to stop blocking downcall interrupts for the entire
length of the downcall. (Now they're blocked while we're executing the
downcall routine itself, but not while we're executing any subsequent
softirq routines.) The hypervisor is doing a very small amount of
work it no longer needs to do (masking INTCTRL_1 on entry to the client
interrupt routine), but doing so means that older versions of Tile Linux
will continue to work with a current hypervisor, so that seems reasonable.

Chris Metcalf 1337173148 arch/tile: fix __ndelay etc to work better
The current implementations of __ndelay and __udelay call a hypervisor
service to delay, but the hypervisor service isn't actually implemented
very well, and the consensus is that Linux should handle figuring this
out natively and not use a hypervisor service.

By converting nanoseconds to cycles, and then spinning until the
cycle counter reaches the desired cycle, we get several benefits:
first, we are sensitive to the actual clock speed; second, we use
less power by issuing a slow SPR read once every six cycles while
we delay; and third, we properly handle the case of an interrupt by
exiting at the target time rather than after some number of cycles.

Chris Metcalf 04f7a3f12e arch/tile: bug fix: exec'ed task thought it was still single-stepping
To handle single-step, tile mmap's a page of memory in the process
space for each thread and uses it to construct a version of the
instruction that we want to single step. If the process exec's,
though, we lose that mapping, and the kernel needs to be aware that
it will need to recreate it if the exec'ed process than tries to
single-step as well.

Also correct some int32_t to s32 for better kernel style.

Chris Metcalf 81711cee93 arch/tile: handle rt_sigreturn() more cleanly
The current tile rt_sigreturn() syscall pattern uses the common idiom
of loading up pt_regs with all the saved registers from the time of
the signal, then anticipating the fact that we will clobber the ABI
"return value" register (r0) as we return from the syscall by setting
the rt_sigreturn return value to whatever random value was in the pt_regs
for r0.

However, this breaks in our 64-bit kernel when running "compat" tasks,
since we always sign-extend the "return value" register to properly
handle returned pointers that are in the upper 2GB of the 32-bit compat
address space. Doing this to the sigreturn path then causes occasional
random corruption of the 64-bit r0 register.

Instead, we stop doing the crazy "load the return-value register"
hack in sigreturn. We already have some sigreturn-specific assembly
code that we use to pass the pt_regs pointer to C code. We extend that
code to also set the link register to point to a spot a few instructions
after the usual syscall return address so we don't clobber the saved r0.
Now it no longer matters what the rt_sigreturn syscall returns, and the
pt_regs structure can be cleanly and completely reloaded.

Chris Metcalf bc4cf2bb27 arch/tile: handle CLONE_SETTLS in copy_thread(), not user space
Previously we were just setting up the "tp" register in the
new task as started by clone() in libc. However, this is not
quite right, since in principle a signal might be delivered to
the new task before it had its TLS set up. (Of course, this race
window still exists for resetting the libc getpid() cached value
in the new task, in principle. But in any case, we are now doing
this exactly the way all other architectures do it.)

This change is important for 2.6.37 since the tile glibc we will
be submitting upstream will not set TLS in user space any more,
so it will only work on a kernel that has this fix. It should
also be taken for 2.6.36.x in the stable tree if possible.

Chris Metcalf f02cbbe657 pci root complex: support for tile architecture
This change enables PCI root complex support for TILEPro. Unlike
TILE-Gx, TILEPro has no support for memory-mapped I/O, so the PCI
support consists of hypervisor upcalls for PIO, DMA, etc. However,
the performance is fine for the devices we have tested with so far
(1Gb Ethernet, SATA, etc.).

The <asm/io.h> header was tweaked to be a little bit more aggressive
about disabling attempts to map/unmap IO port space. The hacky
<asm/pci-bridge.h> header was rolled into the <asm/pci.h> header
and the result was simplified. Both of the latter two headers were
preliminary versions not meant for release before now - oh well.

There is one quirk for our TILEmpower platform, which accidentally
negotiates up to 5GT and needs to be kicked down to 2.5GT.

Chris Metcalf 2c7387ef99 asm-generic/stat.h: support 64-bit file time_t for stat()
The existing asm-generic/stat.h specifies st_mtime, etc., as a 32-value,
and works well for 32-bit architectures (currently microblaze, score,
and 32-bit tile). However, for 64-bit architectures it isn't sufficient
to return 32 bits of time_t; this isn't good insurance against the 2037
rollover. (It also makes glibc support less convenient, since we can't
use glibc's handy STAT_IS_KERNEL_STAT mode.)

This change extends the two "timespec" fields for each of the three atime,
mtime, and ctime fields from "int" to "long". As a result, on 32-bit
platforms nothing changes, and 64-bit platforms will now work as expected.

The only wrinkle is 32-bit userspace under 64-bit kernels taking advantage
of COMPAT mode. For these, we leave the "struct stat64" definitions with
the "int" versions of the time_t and nsec fields, so that architectures
can implement compat_sys_stat64() and friends with sys_stat64(), etc.,
and get the expected 32-bit structure layout. This requires a
field-by-field copy in the kernel, implemented by the code guarded
under __ARCH_WANT_STAT64.

This does mean that the shape of the "struct stat" and "struct stat64"
structures is different on a 64-bit kernel, but only one of the two
structures should ever be used by any given process: "struct stat"
is meant for 64-bit userspace only, and "struct stat64" for 32-bit
userspace only. (On a 32-bit kernel the two structures continue to have
the same shape, since "long" is 32 bits.)

The alternative is keeping the two structures the same shape on 64-bit
kernels, which means a 64-bit time_t in "struct stat64" for 32-bit
processes. This is a little unnatural since 32-bit userspace can't
do anything with 64 bits of time_t information, since time_t is just
"long", not "int64_t"; and in any case 32-bit userspace might expect
to be running under a 32-bit kernel, which can't provide the high 32
bits anyway. In the case of a 32-bit kernel we'd then be extending the
kernel's 32-bit time_t to 64 bits, then truncating it back to 32 bits
again in userspace, for no particular reason. And, as mentioned above,
if we have 64-bit time_t for 32-bit processes we can't easily use glibc's
STAT_IS_KERNEL_STAT, since glibc's stat structure requires an embedded
"struct timespec", which is a pair of "long" (32-bit) values in a 32-bit
userspace. "Inventive" solutions are possible, but are pretty hacky.

Chris Metcalf 34a89d26bd arch/tile: correct double syscall restart for nested signals
This change is modelled on similar fixes for other architectures.
The pt_regs "faultnum" member is set to the trap (fault) number that
caused us to enter the kernel, and is INT_SWINT_1 for the syscall software
interrupt. We already supported a pseudo value, INT_SWINT_1_SIGRETURN,
that we used for the rt_sigreturn syscall; it avoided the case where
one signal was handled, then we "tail-called" to another handler.

This change avoids the similar case where we start to call one handler,
then are preempted into another handler when we start trying to run
the first handler. We clear ->faultnum after calling handle_signal(),
and to be paranoid also in the case where there was no signal to deliver.

Arnd Bergmann 6038f373a3 llseek: automatically add .llseek fop
All file_operations should get a .llseek operation so we can make
nonseekable_open the default for future file operations without a
.llseek pointer.

The three cases that we can automatically detect are no_llseek, seq_lseek
and default_llseek. For cases where we can we can automatically prove that
the file offset is always ignored, we use noop_llseek, which maintains
the current behavior of not returning an error from a seek.

New drivers should normally not use noop_llseek but instead use no_llseek
and call nonseekable_open at open time. Existing drivers can be converted
to do the same when the maintainer knows for certain that no user code
relies on calling seek on the device file.

The generated code is often incorrectly indented and right now contains
comments that clarify for each added line why a specific variant was
chosen. In the version that gets submitted upstream, the comments will
be gone and I will manually fix the indentation, because there does not
seem to be a way to do that using coccinelle.

Some amount of new code is currently sitting in linux-next that should get
the same modifications, which I will do at the end of the merge window.

Chris Metcalf dabe98c972 arch/tile: prevent corrupt top frame from causing backtracer runaway
The backtracer will normally cut itself off after 100 frames anyway,
but it's messy. With this change we notice that the frame being
reported is the same as the last one, and cut off the dump with a
message similar to what gdb displays in the same circumstance.

Previously we were using -1023, which is fine for normal syscall
error returns, but the common value in use for other platforms
is -4095, and one Tilera-specific driver does use values in the
-1100 range, so tickled this bug.

Chris Metcalf d929b6aeaa arch/tile: Use <asm-generic/syscalls.h>
With this change we now include <asm-generic/syscalls.h> into the "tile"
version of the header. To take full advantage of the prototypes there,
we also change our naming convention for "struct pt_regs *" syscalls so
that, e.g., _sys_execve() is the "true" syscall entry, which sets the
appropriate register to point to the pt_regs before calling sys_execve().

While doing this I realized I no longer needed the fork and vfork
entry point stubs, since those functions aren't in the generic
syscall ABI, so I removed them as well.

Chris Metcalf ea44e06e79 arch/tile: remove dead code from intvec_32.S
This "bpt_code" instruction was killed off in our development line a while
ago (the actual definition of bpt_code that is used is in kernel/traps.c)
but I didn't push it for 2.6.36 because it seemed harmless and I didn't
want to try to push more than absolutely necessary.

However, we recently fixed a bug in our gcc that had been causing
"-gdwarf2" not to be passed to the assembler, and passing this flag causes
an erroneous assembler failure in the presence of code in a data section,
sometimes. While we'd like to track down the bug in the assembler,
we'd also like to make sure 2.6.36 builds with the current toolchain,
so I'm removing this dead code as well.

Chris Metcalf 74fca9da09 arch/tile: Change struct sigcontext to be more useful
Rather than just using pt_regs, it now contains the actual saved
state explicitly, similar to pt_regs. By doing it this way, we
provide a cleaner API for userspace (or equivalently, we avoid the
need for libc to provide its own definition of sigcontext).

While we're at it, move PT_FLAGS_xxx to where they are not visible
from userspace. And always pass siginfo and mcontext to signal
handlers, even if they claim they don't need it, since sometimes
they actually try to use it anyway in practice.

David Howells d7627467b7 Make do_execve() take a const filename pointer
Make do_execve() take a const filename pointer so that kernel_execve() compiles
correctly on ARM:

arch/arm/kernel/sys_arm.c:88: warning: passing argument 1 of 'do_execve' discards qualifiers from pointer target type

This also requires the argv and envp arguments to be consted twice, once for
the pointer array and once for the strings the array points to. This is
because do_execve() passes a pointer to the filename (now const) to
copy_strings_kernel(). A simpler alternative would be to cast the filename
pointer in do_execve() when it's passed to copy_strings_kernel().

do_execve() may not change any of the strings it is passed as part of the argv
or envp lists as they are some of them in .rodata, so marking these strings as
const should be fine.

Further kernel_execve() and sys_execve() need to be changed to match.

This has been test built on x86_64, frv, arm and mips.

Chris Metcalf ba00376b0b arch/tile: extend syscall ABI to set r1 on return as well.
Until now, the tile architecture ABI for syscall return has just been
that r0 holds the return value, and an error is only signalled like it is
for kernel code, with a negative small number.

However, this means that in multiple places in userspace we end up writing
the same three-cycle idiom that tests for a small negative number for
error. It seems cleaner to instead move that code into the kernel, and
set r1 to hold zero on success or errno on failure; previously, r1 was
just zeroed on return from the kernel (to avoid leaking kernel state).
This way a single conditional branch after the syscall is sufficient
to test for the failure case. The number of cycles taken is the same,
but the error-checking code is in just one place, so total code size is
smaller, and random userspace syscall code is easier to understand.

Chris Metcalf 32020effaf arch/tile: Fix a couple of issues with the COMPAT code for TILE-Gx.
First, the siginfo preamble wasn't quite right; we need to indicate
that we are padding up to 4 ints of preamble for 64-bit code, and
then for compat mode we need to pad differently, using only 3 ints.

Second, the C ABI requires a save area of two registers, not two
pointers, since in compat mode we have 64-bit registers all of which
we need to save, even though we only have 32-bit VAs.

We were using the same 5-sec minsec for the clocksource and sched_clock
that we were using for the clock_event_device. For the clock_event_device
that's exactly right since it has a short maximum countdown time.
But for sched_clock we want to avoid wraparound when converting from
ticks to nsec over a much longer window, so we force a shift of 10.
And for clocksource it seems dodgy to use a 5-sec minsec as well, so we
copy some other platforms and force a shift of 22.

Chris Metcalf 0707ad30d1 arch/tile: Miscellaneous cleanup changes.
This commit is primarily changes caused by reviewing "sparse"
and "checkpatch" output on our sources, so is somewhat noisy, since
things like "printk() -> pr_err()" (or whatever) throughout the
codebase tend to get tedious to read. Rather than trying to tease
apart precisely which things changed due to which type of code
review, this commit includes various cleanups in the code:

- sparse: Add declarations in headers for globals.
- sparse: Fix __user annotations.
- sparse: Using gfp_t consistently instead of int.
- sparse: removing functions not actually used.
- checkpatch: Clean up printk() warnings by using pr_info(), etc.;
also avoid partial-line printks except in bootup code.
  - checkpatch: Use exposed structs rather than typedefs.
  - checkpatch: Change some C99 comments to C89 comments.

In addition, a couple of minor other changes are rolled in
to this commit:

- Add support for a "raise" instruction to cause SIGFPE, etc., to be raised.
- Remove some compat code that is unnecessary when we fully eliminate
some of the deprecated syscalls from the generic syscall ABI.
- Update the tile_defconfig to reflect current config contents.

Chris Metcalf 9f9c0382cd arch/tile: Add driver to enable access to the user dynamic network.
This network (the "UDN") connects all the cpus on the chip in a
wormhole-routed dynamic network. Subrectangles of the chip can
be allocated by a "create" ioctl on /dev/hardwall, and then to access the
UDN in that rectangle, tasks must perform an "activate" ioctl on that
same file object after affinitizing themselves to a single cpu in
the region. Sending a wormhole-routed message that tries to leave
that subrectangle causes all activated tasks to receive a SIGILL
(just as they would if they tried to access the UDN without first
activating themselves to a hardwall rectangle).

The original submission of this code to LKML had the driver
instantiated under /proc/tile/hardwall. Now we just use a character
device for this, conventionally /dev/hardwall. Some futures planning
for the TILE-Gx chip suggests that we may want to have other types of
devices that share the general model of "bind a task to a cpu, then
'activate' a file descriptor on a pseudo-device that gives access to
some hardware resource". As such, we are using a device rather
than, for example, a syscall, to set up and activate this code.

As part of this change, the compat_ptr() declaration was fixed and used
to pass the compat_ioctl argument to the normal ioctl. So far we limit
compat code to 2GB, so the difference between zero-extend and sign-extend
(the latter being correct, eventually) had been overlooked.
