Jens Axboe e34cbd3074 blk-wbt: add general throttling mechanism
We can hook this up to the block layer, to help throttle buffered
writes.

wbt registers a few trace points that can be used to track what is
happening in the system:

wbt_lat: 259:0: latency 2446318
wbt_stat: 259:0: rmean=2446318, rmin=2446318, rmax=2446318, rsamples=1,
               wmean=518866, wmin=15522, wmax=5330353, wsamples=57
wbt_step: 259:0: step down: step=1, window=72727272, background=8, normal=16, max=32

This shows a sync issue event (wbt_lat) that exceeded it's time. wbt_stat
dumps the current read/write stats for that window, and wbt_step shows a
step down event where we now scale back writes. Each trace includes the
device, 259:0 in this case.

Jens Axboe cf43e6be86 block: add scalable completion tracking of requests
For legacy block, we simply track them in the request queue. For
blk-mq, we track them on a per-sw queue basis, which we can then
sum up through the hardware queues and finally to a per device
state.

The stats are tracked in, roughly, 0.1s interval windows.

Add sysfs files to display the stats.

The feature is off by default, to avoid any extra overhead. In-kernel
users of it can turn it on by setting QUEUE_FLAG_STATS in the queue
flags. We currently don't turn it on if someone just reads any of
the stats files, that is something we could add as well.

Hannes Reinecke 6a0cb1bc10 block: Implement support for zoned block devices
Implement zoned block device zone information reporting and reset.
Zone information are reported as struct blk_zone. This implementation
does not differentiate between host-aware and host-managed device
models and is valid for both. Two functions are provided:
blkdev_report_zones for discovering the zone configuration of a
zoned block device, and blkdev_reset_zones for resetting the write
pointer of sequential zones. The helper function blk_queue_zone_size
and bdev_zone_size are also provided for, as the name suggest,
obtaining the zone size (in 512B sectors) of the zones of the device.

Jens Axboe 320ae51fee blk-mq: new multi-queue block IO queueing mechanism
Linux currently has two models for block devices:

- The classic request_fn based approach, where drivers use struct
request units for IO. The block layer provides various helper
functionalities to let drivers share code, things like tag
  management, timeout handling, queueing, etc.

- The "stacked" approach, where a driver squeezes in between the
block layer and IO submitter. Since this bypasses the IO stack,
driver generally have to manage everything themselves.

With drivers being written for new high IOPS devices, the classic
request_fn based driver doesn't work well enough. The design dates
back to when both SMP and high IOPS was rare. It has problems with
scaling to bigger machines, and runs into scaling issues even on
smaller machines when you have IOPS in the hundreds of thousands
per device.

The stacked approach is then most often selected as the model
for the driver. But this means that everybody has to re-invent
everything, and along with that we get all the problems again
that the shared approach solved.

This commit introduces blk-mq, block multi queue support. The
design is centered around per-cpu queues for queueing IO, which
then funnel down into x number of hardware submission queues.
We might have a 1:1 mapping between the two, or it might be
an N:M mapping. That all depends on what the hardware supports.

blk-mq provides various helper functions, which include:

- Scalable support for request tagging. Most devices need to
be able to uniquely identify a request both in the driver and
to the hardware. The tagging uses per-cpu caches for freed
tags, to enable cache hot reuse.

- Timeout handling without tracking request on a per-device
basis. Basically the driver should be able to get a notification,
if a request happens to fail.

- Optional support for non 1:1 mappings between issue and
submission queues. blk-mq can redirect IO completions to the
  desired location.

- Support for per-request payloads. Drivers almost always need
to associate a request structure with some driver private
command structure. Drivers can tell blk-mq this at init time,
and then any request handed to the driver will have the
required size of memory associated with it.

- Support for merging of IO, and plugging. The stacked model
gets neither of these. Even for high IOPS devices, merging
sequential IO reduces per-command overhead and thus
  increases bandwidth.

For now, this is provided as a potential 3rd queueing model, with
the hope being that, as it matures, it can replace both the classic
and stacked model. That would get us back to having just 1 real
model for block devices, leaving the stacked approach to dm/md
devices (as it was originally intended).

Paul Gortmaker 080506ad0a block: change config option name for cmdline partition parsing
Recently commit bab55417b1 ("block: support embedded device command
line partition") introduced CONFIG_CMDLINE_PARSER. However, that name
is too generic and sounds like it enables/disables generic kernel boot
arg processing, when it really is block specific.

Before this option becomes a part of a full/final release, add the BLK_
prefix to it so that it is clear in absence of any other context that it
is block specific.

In addition, fix up the following less critical items:
 - help text was not really at all helpful.
 - index file for Documentation was not updated
 - add the new arg to Documentation/kernel-parameters.txt
 - clarify wording in source comments

Jens Axboe 5e605b64a1 block: add blk-iopoll, a NAPI like approach for block devices
This borrows some code from NAPI and implements a polled completion
mode for block devices. The idea is the same as NAPI - instead of
doing the command completion when the irq occurs, schedule a dedicated
softirq in the hopes that we will complete more IO when the iopoll
handler is invoked. Devices have a budget of commands assigned, and will
stay in polled mode as long as they continue to consume their budget
from the iopoll softirq handler. If they do not, the device is set back
to interrupt completion mode.

This patch holds the core bits for blk-iopoll, device driver support
sold separately.

All users of the old cmd filter have been converted to use the new one.

Martin K. Petersen 7ba1ba12ee block: Block layer data integrity support
Some block devices support verifying the integrity of requests by way
of checksums or other protection information that is submitted along
with the I/O.

This patch implements support for generating and verifying integrity
metadata, as well as correctly merging, splitting and cloning bios and
requests that have this extra information attached.

See Documentation/block/data-integrity.txt for more information.

Arnd Bergmann f58c4c0a17 compat_ioctl: move common block ioctls to compat_blkdev_ioctl
Make compat_blkdev_ioctl and blkdev_ioctl reflect the respective
native versions. This is somewhat more efficient and makes it easier
to keep the two in sync.

Also get rid of the bogus handling for broken_blkgetsize and the
duplicate entry for BLKRASET.

David Howells 9361401eb7 [PATCH] BLOCK: Make it possible to disable the block layer [try #6]
Make it possible to disable the block layer. Not all embedded devices require
it, some can make do with just JFFS2, NFS, ramfs, etc - none of which require
the block layer to be present.

This patch does the following:

(*) Introduces CONFIG_BLOCK to disable the block layer, buffering and blockdev
     support.

(*) Adds dependencies on CONFIG_BLOCK to any configuration item that controls
an item that uses the block layer. This includes:

     (*) Block I/O tracing.

     (*) Disk partition code.

(*) All filesystems that are block based, eg: Ext3, ReiserFS, ISOFS.

(*) The SCSI layer. As far as I can tell, even SCSI chardevs use the
block layer to do scheduling. Some drivers that use SCSI facilities -
such as USB storage - end up disabled indirectly from this.

(*) Various block-based device drivers, such as IDE and the old CDROM
     	 drivers.

(*) MTD blockdev handling and FTL.

(*) JFFS - which uses set_bdev_super(), something it could avoid doing by
taking a leaf out of JFFS2's book.

(*) Makes most of the contents of linux/blkdev.h, linux/buffer_head.h and
linux/elevator.h contingent on CONFIG_BLOCK being set. sector_div() is,
however, still used in places, and so is still available.

(*) Also made contingent are the contents of linux/mpage.h, linux/genhd.h and
     parts of linux/fs.h.

(*) Makes a number of files in fs/ contingent on CONFIG_BLOCK.

(*) Makes mm/bounce.c (bounce buffering) contingent on CONFIG_BLOCK.

 (*) set_page_dirty() doesn't call __set_page_dirty_buffers() if CONFIG_BLOCK
     is not enabled.

(*) fs/no-block.c is created to hold out-of-line stubs and things that are
required when CONFIG_BLOCK is not set:

(*) Default blockdev file operations (to give error ENODEV on opening).

 (*) Makes some /proc changes:

(*) /proc/devices does not list any blockdevs.

     (*) /proc/diskstats and /proc/partitions are contingent on CONFIG_BLOCK.

(*) Makes some compat ioctl handling contingent on CONFIG_BLOCK.

(*) If CONFIG_BLOCK is not defined, makes sys_quotactl() return -ENODEV if
given command other than Q_SYNC or if a special device is specified.

(*) In init/do_mounts.c, no reference is made to the blockdev routines if
CONFIG_BLOCK is not defined. This does not prohibit NFS roots or JFFS2.

(*) The bdflush, ioprio_set and ioprio_get syscalls can now be absent (return
error ENOSYS by way of cond_syscall if so).

(*) The seclvl_bd_claim() and seclvl_bd_release() security calls do nothing if
CONFIG_BLOCK is not set, since they can't then happen.
