Corey Minyard 89986496de ipmi: Turn off all activity on an idle ipmi interface
The IPMI driver would wake up periodically looking for events and
watchdog pretimeouts.  If there is nothing waiting for these events,
it's really kind of pointless to be checking for them.  So modify the
driver so the message handler can pass down if it needs the lower layer
to be waiting for these.  Modify the system interface lower layer to
turn off all timer and thread activity if the upper layer doesn't need
anything and it is not currently handling messages.  And modify the
message handler to not restart the timer if its timer is not needed.

The timers and kthread will still be enabled if:
 - the SI interface is handling a message.
 - a user has enabled watching for events.
 - the IPMI watchdog timer is in use (since it uses pretimeouts).
 - the message handler is waiting on a remote response.
 - a user has registered to receive commands.

This mostly affects interfaces without interrupts.  Interfaces with
interrupts already don't use CPU in the system interface when the
interface is idle.

Bodo Stroesser 48e8ac2979 ipmi: Fix a race restarting the timer
With recent changes it is possible for the timer handler to detect an
idle interface and not start the timer, but the thread to start an
operation at the same time.  The thread will not start the timer in that
instance, resulting in the timer not running.

Instead, move all timer operations under the lock and start the timer in
the thread if it detect non-idle and the timer is not already running.
Moving under locks allows the last timeout to be set in both the thread
and the timer.  'Timer is not running' means that the timer is not
pending and smi_timeout() is not running.  So we need a flag to detect
this correctly.

Also fix a few other timeout bugs: setting the last timeout when the
interrupt has to be disabled and the timer started, and setting the last
timeout in check_start_timer_thread possibly racing with the timer

Paul Gortmaker 4c020b032b drivers/char: delete non-required instances of include <linux/init.h>
None of these files are actually using any __init type directives
and hence don't need to include <linux/init.h>.  Most are just a
left over from __devinit and __cpuinit removal, or simply due to
code getting copied from one driver to the next.

Xie XiuQi e21404dc0a ipmi: fix timeout calculation when bmc is disconnected
Loading ipmi_si module while bmc is disconnected, we found the timeout
is longer than 5 secs.  Actually it takes about 3 mins and 20
secs.(HZ=250)

Function wait_for_msg_done() use schedule_timeout_uninterruptible(1) to

Thomas Bogendoerfer fdbeb7de70 BMC support for PARISC machines
The last line of PARISC machines (C8000, RP34x0, etc.) have a BMC for
controlling temperature, fan speed and other stuff.  The BMC is
connected via a special bus and listed in the firmware device tree.
This change adds support for these BMCs to the IPMI driver.

Jordan_Hargrave@Dell.com a798e2d2d7 Add MODULE_ALIAS for autoloading ipmi driver on ACPI systems
I'd submitted this about a year ago but it never made it upstream.

The latest versions of the kernel drivers for ipmi can use ACPI to
determine the type of BMC device used in the system.  The following
patch adds a module alias so that udev will autoload the ipmi_si driver.

Al Viro d9dda78bad procfs: new helper - PDE_DATA(inode)
The only part of proc_dir_entry the code outside of fs/proc
really cares about is PDE(inode)->data.  Provide a helper
for that; static inline for now, eventually will be moved
to fs/proc, along with the knowledge of struct proc_dir_entry
layout.

Corey Minyard d941aeae42 ipmi: add new kernel options to prevent automatic ipmi init
The configuration change building ipmi_si into the kernel precludes the
use of a custom driver that can utilize more than one KCS interface,
multiple IPMBs, and more than one BMC.  This capability is important for
fault-tolerant systems.

Even if the kernel option ipmi_si.trydefaults=0 is specified, ipmi_si
discovers and claims one of the KCS interfaces on a Stratus server.  The
inability to now prevent the kernel from managing this device is a
regression from previous kernels.  The regression breaks a capability
fault-tolerant vendors have relied upon.

To support both ACPI opregion access and the need to avoid activation of
ipmi_si on some platforms, we've added two new kernel options,
ipmi_si.tryacpi and ipmi_si.trydmi be added to prevent ipmi_si from
initializing when these options are set to 0 on the kernel command line.
With these options at the default value of 1, ipmi_si init proceeds
according to the kernel default.

Greg Kroah-Hartman bcd2982a0e Drivers: char: remove __dev* attributes.
CONFIG_HOTPLUG is going away as an option.  As a result, the __dev*
markings need to be removed.

This change removes the use of __devinit, __devexit_p, __devinitdata,
__devinitconst, and __devexit from these drivers.

Based on patches originally written by Bill Pemberton, but redone by me
in order to handle some of the coding style issues better, by hand.

Corey Minyard 7adf579c8b ipmi: use a tasklet for handling received messages
The IPMI driver would release a lock, deliver a message, then relock.
This is obviously ugly, and this patch converts the message handler
interface to use a tasklet to schedule work.  This lets the receive
handler be called from an interrupt handler with interrupts enabled.

Srinivas_Gowda b88e769368 ipmi: decrease the IPMI message transaction time in interrupt mode
Call the event handler immediately after starting the next message.

This change considerably decreases the IPMI transaction time (cuts off
~9ms for a single ipmitool transaction).

Rusty Russell 90ab5ee941 module_param: make bool parameters really bool (drivers & misc)
module_param(bool) used to counter-intuitively take an int.  In
fddd5201 (mid-2009) we allowed bool or int/unsigned int using a messy
trick.

It's time to remove the int/unsigned int option.  For this version
it'll simply give a warning, but it'll break next kernel version.

Grant Likely b1608d69cb drivercore: revert addition of of_match to struct device
Commit b826291c, "drivercore/dt: add a match table pointer to struct
device" added an of_match pointer to struct device to cache the
of_match_table entry discovered at driver match time.  This was unsafe
because matching is not an atomic operation with probing a driver.  If
two or more drivers are attempted to be matched to a driver at the
same time, then the cached matching entry pointer could get
overwritten.

This patch reverts the of_match cache pointer and reworks all users to
call of_match_device() directly instead.

This patch fixes an issue in OpenIPMI module where sometimes an ABORT command

Rob Herring a1e9c9dd33 ipmi: convert OF driver to platform driver
of_bus is deprecated in favor of the plain platform bus. This patch
merges the ipmi OF driver with the existing platform driver.

CONFIG_PPC_OF occurrances are removed or replaced with CONFIG_OF.

Compile tested with and without CONFIG_OF. Tested OF probe and
default probe cases.

Corey Minyard d2478521af char/ipmi: fix OOPS caused by pnp_unregister_driver on unregistered driver
This patch fixes an OOPS triggered when calling modprobe ipmi_si a
second time after the first modprobe returned without finding any ipmi
devices.  This can happen if you reload the module after having the
first module load fail.  The driver was not deregistering from PNP in
that case.

Peter Huewe originally reported this patch and supplied a fix, I have a
different patch based on Linus' suggestion that cleans things up a bit
more.

Zhao Yakui 16f4232ce4 IPMI: Add one interface to get more info of low-level IPMI device
The IPMI smi_watcher will be used to catch the IPMI interface as they
come or go.  In order to communicate with the correct IPMI device, it
should be confirmed whether it is what we wanted especially on the
system with multiple IPMI devices. But the new_smi callback function
of smi_watcher provides very limited info(only the interface number
and dev pointer) and there is no detailed info about the low level
interface. For example: which mechansim registers the IPMI
interface(ACPI, PCI, DMI and so on).

This is to add one interface that can get more info of low-level IPMI
device. For example: the ACPI device handle will be returned for the
pnp_acpi IPMI device.

Martin Wilck 8d1f66dc9b ipmi: set schedule_timeout_wait() value back to one
Fix a regression introduced by ae74e823cb ("ipmi: add parameter to limit
CPU usage in kipmid").

Some systems were seeing CPU usage go up dramatically with the recent
changes to try to reduce timer usage in the IPMI driver.  This was traced
down to schedule_timeout_interruptible(1) being changed to
schedule_timeout_interruptbile(0).  Revert that part of the change.

Matthew Garrett 56480287f9 ipmi: make sure drivers were registered before unregistering them
The ipmi code will never register a PCI or Open Firmware driver if a
hardcoded device is provided by the user by providing device addresses via
the module parameters.  This can cause us to attempt to unregister a
driver that was never registered, resulting in an oops.  Keep track of
registration in order to avoid this.

Fixes a post-2.6.34 regression.

Jiri Kosina a747c5abc3 ipmi: handle run_to_completion properly in deliver_recv_msg()
If run_to_completion flag is set, it means that we are running in a
single-threaded mode, and thus no locks are held.

This fixes a deadlock when IPMI notifier is being called during panic.

Matthew Garrett 06ee459402 ipmi: attempt to register multiple SIs of the same type
Some odd systems may have multiple BMCs, and we want to be able to support
them.  Let's make the assumption that if a system legitimately has
multiple BMCs then each BMC's SI will be of the same type, and also that
we won't see multiple SIs of the same type unless we have multiple BMCs.
If these hold true then we should register all SIs of the same type.

Matthew Garrett ea4078ca1a ipmi: reduce polling when interrupts are available
If we're not currently in the middle of a transaction, and if we have
interrupts, there's no real reason to poll the controller more frequently
than the core IPMI code does.  Set the interrupt_disabled flag
appropriately as the interrupt state changes, and make the timeout code
reset itself only if the transaction is incomplete or we have no
interrupts.

Grant Likely 4018294b53 of: Remove duplicate fields from of_platform_driver
.name, .match_table and .owner are duplicated in both of_platform_driver
and device_driver.  This patch is a removes the extra copies from struct
of_platform_driver and converts all users to the device_driver members.

This patch is a pretty mechanical change.  The usage model doesn't change
and if any drivers have been missed, or if anything has been fixed up
incorrectly, then it will fail with a compile time error, and the fixup
will be trivial.  This patch looks big and scary because it touches so
many files, but it should be pretty safe.

Martin Wilck ae74e823cb ipmi: add parameter to limit CPU usage in kipmid
In some cases kipmid can use a lot of CPU.  This adds a way to tune the
CPU used by kipmid to help in those cases.  By setting kipmid_max_busy_us
to a value between 100 and 500, it is possible to bring down kipmid CPU
load to practically 0 without loosing too much ipmi throughput
performance.  Not setting the value, or setting the value to zero,
operation is unaffected.

The solution is to only register this driver under ACPI. (Also, the CONFIG_PNP

Bjorn Helgaas 9e368fa011 ipmi: add PNP discovery (ACPI namespace via PNPACPI)
This allows ipmi_si_intf.c to claim IPMI devices described in the ACPI
namespace.  Using PNP makes it simpler to parse the IRQ/IO/memory resources
of the device.

We look at any SPMI tables before looking for devices in the namespace.

This is based on ipmi_pci_probe().

In the near future, the driver core is going to not allow direct access
to the driver_data pointer in struct device.  Instead, the functions
dev_get_drvdata() and dev_set_drvdata() should be used.  These functions
have been around since the beginning, so are backwards compatible with
all older kernel versions.

Alexey Dobriyan 99b7623380 proc 2/2: remove struct proc_dir_entry::owner
Setting ->owner as done currently (pde->owner = THIS_MODULE) is racy
as correctly noted at bug #12454. Someone can lookup entry with NULL
->owner, thus not pinning enything, and release it later resulting
in module refcount underflow.

We can keep ->owner and supply it at registration time like ->proc_fops
and ->data.

But this leaves ->owner as easy-manipulative field (just one C assignment)
and somebody will forget to unpin previous/pin current module when
switching ->owner. ->proc_fops is declared as "const" which should give
some thoughts.

->read_proc/->write_proc were just fixed to not require ->owner for
protection.

rmmod'ed directories will be empty and return "." and ".." -- no harm.
And directories with tricky enough readdir and lookup shouldn't be modular.
We definitely don't want such modular code.

Removing ->owner will also make PDE smaller.

So, let's nuke it.

Kudos to Jeff Layton for reminding about this, let's say, oversight.

Darrick J. Wong fe2d5ffc74 Fix platform drivers that crash on suspend/resume
It turns out that if one registers a struct platform_device, the
platform device code expects that platform_device.device->driver points
to a struct driver inside a struct platform_driver.

This is not the case with the ipmi-si, ipmi-msghandler and ibmaem
drivers, which causes the suspend/resume hook functions to jump off into
nowhere, causing a crash.  Make this assumption hold true for these
three drivers.

Corey Minyard bda4c30aa6 ipmi: run to completion fixes
The "run_to_completion" mode was somewhat broken.  Locks need to be avoided in
run_to_completion mode, and it shouldn't be used by normal users, just
internally for panic situations.

This patch removes locks in run_to_completion mode and removes the user call
for setting the mode.  The only user was the poweroff code, but it was easily
converted to use the polling interface.

doesn't actually poll the interface to make sure the message goes out.

Corey Minyard c45adc3915 IPMI: don't init irq until ready
Patrick found a race at startup.  Interrupts were being enabled for the IPMI
interface before the driver was really ready to handle them.  This could
result in an oops if something was pending on the interface at startup and
interrupt were already enabled (technically shouldn't happen, but need to
cover for this in real life).  So move the IRQ setup to the code that starts
the actual IPMI processing.

Jeff Garzik 1855256c49 drivers/firmware: const-ify DMI API and internals
Three main sets of changes:

1) dmi_get_system_info() return value should have been marked const,
   since callers should not be changing that data.

2) const-ify DMI internals, since DMI firmware tables should,
   whenever possible, be marked const to ensure we never ever write to
   that data area.

3) const-ify DMI API, to enable marking tables const where possible
   in low-level drivers.

And if we're really lucky, this might enable some additional
optimizations on the part of the compiler.

The bulk of the changes are #2 and #3, which are interrelated.  #1 could
have been a separate patch, but it was so small compared to the others,
it was easier to roll it into this changeset.

Kees Cook 248bdd5efc pci: fix unterminated pci_device_id lists
Fix a couple drivers that do not correctly terminate their pci_device_id
lists.  This results in garbage being spewed into modules.pcimap when the
module happens to not have 28 NULL bytes following the table, and/or the
last PCI ID is actually truncated from the table when calculating the
modules.alias PCI aliases, cause those unfortunate device IDs to not
auto-load.

Jesper Juhl 80cd69203c ipmi: Fix mem leak in try_init_dmi()
This is only called at init time and only happens if the BIOS screws
something up, so the leak is slight and it is probably not worth sending to
2.6.22.x.  The driver would not initialize the interface in the case, and I
have no reports of this happening.  I have booted and run tests on a system
with this patch.  Note that the original patch was munged by the mailer,
here's a new one.

If we ever hit the "default:" case in the switch in try_init_dmi(),
then we'll leak the storage allocated with kzalloc() and assigned
to 'info'.

Christian Krafft 10fb62e5b7 IPMI: Add PPC openfirmware unregister
When trying to load the ipmi_si module on a powerpc with no BMC (baseboard
management controller) the driver failes to load correctly, but doesn't
unregister itself from of_platform.  So, on a second modprobe the kernel
crashes.  This patch adds the missing unregister call.

Corey Minyard ee6cd5f8f5 ipmi: allow shared interrupts
The IPMI driver used enable_irq and disable_irq when it got into situations
where it couldn't allocate memory; it did this to avoid having the interrupt
just lock the machine when it couldn't get memory to perform the transaction
to disable the interrupt.

This patch modifies the driver to not use disable_irq and enable_irq.  It
instead sends the messages to the BMC to perform this operation.  It also
makes sure interrupts are cleanly disabled when the interface is shut down and
cleans up some shutdown things that are no longer necessary.

probed for all devices with the type ipmi.  It's supporting devices with

tested.

Christian Krafft 4ff31d7757 [PATCH] ipmi: check, if default ports are accessible on PPC
ipmi_si_intf tries to access default ports, if no device could be found
elsewhere.  On PPC we have a function to check, if these legacy IO ports
are accessible.  This patch adds a check for these ports on PPC.  This
patch fixes a breakage of IPMI module on PPC machines without a BMC.

Corey Minyard 4d7cbac7c8 [PATCH] IPMI: Fix BT long busy
The IPMI BT subdriver has been patched to survive "long busy" timeouts seen
during firmware upgrades and resets.  The patch never returns the HOSED state,
synthesizes response messages with meaningful completion codes, and recovers
gracefully when the hardware finishes the long busy.  The subdriver now issues
a "Get BT Capabilities" command and properly uses those results.  More
informative completion codes are returned on error from transaction starts;
this logic was propogated to the KCS and SMIC subdrivers.  Finally, indent and
other style quirks were normalized.

the ipmi_si driver would request flags, see if the event buffer full flag was
set, then request events.  It's better to just send the request for events, as
it cuts one message out of the transaction if there happens to be events, and

Corey Minyard b9675136e2 [PATCH] IPMI: Add maintenance mode
Some commands and operations on a BMC can cause the BMC to "go away" for a
while.  This can cause the automatic flag processing and other things of that
nature to timeout and generate annoying logs, or possibly cause other bad
things to happen when in firmware update mode.

Add detection of those commands (cold reset, warm reset, and any firmware
command) and turns off automatic processing for 30 seconds.  It also add a
manual override either way.

The root cause is the device struct is initialized twice.

If the device is allocated dynamically by platform_device_alloc,
platform_device_alloc will initialize struct device, then,
platform_device_add should be used to register the device.

The difference between platform_device_register and platform_device_add is
platform_device_register will initiate the device while platform_device_add
won't.

David Howells 7d12e780e0 IRQ: Maintain regs pointer globally rather than passing to IRQ handlers
Maintain a per-CPU global "struct pt_regs *" variable which can be used instead
of passing regs around manually through all ~1800 interrupt handlers in the
Linux kernel.

The regs pointer is used in few places, but it potentially costs both stack
space and code to pass it around.  On the FRV arch, removing the regs parameter
from all the genirq function results in a 20% speed up of the IRQ exit path
(ie: from leaving timer_interrupt() to leaving do_IRQ()).

Where appropriate, an arch may override the generic storage facility and do
something different with the variable.  On FRV, for instance, the address is
maintained in GR28 at all times inside the kernel as part of general exception
handling.

Having looked over the code, it appears that the parameter may be handed down
through up to twenty or so layers of functions.  Consider a USB character
device attached to a USB hub, attached to a USB controller that posts its
interrupts through a cascaded auxiliary interrupt controller.  A character
device driver may want to pass regs to the sysrq handler through the input
layer which adds another few layers of parameter passing.

I've build this code with allyesconfig for x86_64 and i386.  I've runtested the
main part of the code on FRV and i386, though I can't test most of the drivers.
I've also done partial conversion for powerpc and MIPS - these at least compile
with minimal configurations.

This will affect all archs.  Mostly the changes should be relatively easy.
Take do_IRQ(), store the regs pointer at the beginning, saving the old one:

	struct pt_regs *old_regs = set_irq_regs(regs);

And put the old one back at the end:

	set_irq_regs(old_regs);

Don't pass regs through to generic_handle_irq() or __do_IRQ().

In timer_interrupt(), this sort of change will be necessary:

	-	update_process_times(user_mode(regs));
	-	profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING, regs);
	+	update_process_times(user_mode(get_irq_regs()));
	+	profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING);

I'd like to move update_process_times()'s use of get_irq_regs() into itself,
except that i386, alone of the archs, uses something other than user_mode().

Some notes on the interrupt handling in the drivers:

 (*) input_dev() is now gone entirely.  The regs pointer is no longer stored in
     the input_dev struct.

 (*) finish_unlinks() in drivers/usb/host/ohci-q.c needs checking.  It does
     something different depending on whether it's been supplied with a regs
     pointer or not.

 (*) Various IRQ handler function pointers have been moved to type
     irq_handler_t.

Corey Minyard a51f4a81e7 [PATCH] IPMI: allow user to override the kernel IPMI daemon enable
After the previous patch to disable the kernel IPMI daemon if interrupts
were available, the issue of broken hardware was raised, and a reasonable
request to add an override was mode.  So here it is.

Allow the user to force the kernel ipmi daemon on or off.  This way,
hardware with broken interrupts or users that are not concerned with
performance can turn it on or off to their liking.

Corey Minyard df3fe8defe [PATCH] ipmi: don't start kipmid if the IPMI driver can use interrupts
If the driver has interrupts available to it, there is really no reason to
have a kernel daemon push the IPMI state machine.

Note that I have experienced machines where the interrupts do not work
correctly.  This was a long time ago and hopefully things are better now.
If some machines still have broken interrupts, a blacklist will need to be
added.

fails with nodev.  It would be fine if all resources were freed.  A call to

This patch is pretty important to get in for IPMI, new systems have been
changing the way ACPI and IPMI interact, and this works around the problems
for now.  This is a temporary fix until we get proper ACPI handling in
IPMI.

Fixed releasing already-allocated regions when a later request fails, and
forward-ported it to HEAD.

Some BIOSes reserve disjoint I/O regions in their ACPI tables for the IPMI
controller.  This causes problems when trying to register the entire I/O
region.  Therefore we must register each I/O port separately.

interface.

Alan Stern e041c68341 [PATCH] Notifier chain update: API changes
The kernel's implementation of notifier chains is unsafe.  There is no
protection against entries being added to or removed from a chain while the
chain is in use.  The issues were discussed in this thread:

We noticed that notifier chains in the kernel fall into two basic usage
classes:

	"Blocking" chains are always called from a process context
	and the callout routines are allowed to sleep;

	"Atomic" chains can be called from an atomic context and
	the callout routines are not allowed to sleep.

We decided to codify this distinction and make it part of the API.  Therefore
this set of patches introduces three new, parallel APIs: one for blocking
notifiers, one for atomic notifiers, and one for "raw" notifiers (which is
really just the old API under a new name).  New kinds of data structures are
used for the heads of the chains, and new routines are defined for
registration, unregistration, and calling a chain.  The three APIs are
explained in include/linux/notifier.h and their implementation is in
kernel/sys.c.

With atomic and blocking chains, the implementation guarantees that the chain
links will not be corrupted and that chain callers will not get messed up by
entries being added or removed.  For raw chains the implementation provides no
guarantees at all; users of this API must provide their own protections.  (The
idea was that situations may come up where the assumptions of the atomic and
blocking APIs are not appropriate, so it should be possible for users to
handle these things in their own way.)

There are some limitations, which should not be too hard to live with.  For
atomic/blocking chains, registration and unregistration must always be done in
a process context since the chain is protected by a mutex/rwsem.  Also, a
callout routine for a non-raw chain must not try to register or unregister
entries on its own chain.  (This did happen in a couple of places and the code
had to be changed to avoid it.)

Since atomic chains may be called from within an NMI handler, they cannot use
spinlocks for synchronization.  Instead we use RCU.  The overhead falls almost
entirely in the unregister routine, which is okay since unregistration is much
less frequent that calling a chain.

of them use the raw API, so for the moment it is only a placeholder.

Corey Minyard 50c812b2b9 [PATCH] ipmi: add full sysfs support
Add full driver model support for the IPMI driver.  It links in the proper
bus and device support.

It adds an "ipmi" driver interface that has each BMC discovered by the
driver (as a device).  These BMCs appear in the devices/platform directory.
 If there are multiple interfaces to the same BMC, the driver should
discover this and will only have one BMC entry.  The BMC entry will have
pointers to each interface device that connects to it.

The device information (statistics and config information) has not yet been
ported over to the driver model from proc, that will come later.

This work was based on work by Yani Ioannou.  I basically rewrote it using
that code as a guide, but he still deserves credit :).

Rocky Craig 94f91def99 [PATCH] IPMI: remove invalid acpi register spacing check
At the 2.6.12 timeframe ipmi_si_intf.c was patched to provide default
register spacings in try_init_acpi() if the register spacing was set to
zero, similar to code in other routines.

Unfortunately, another patch was simultaneously added that exits early from
try_init_acpi() if the register spacings are set to zero, circumventing the
new defaults.  This patch removes the early exit code and some incorrect
comments that aren't present in other common code snippets.

Matt Domsch a9fad4cc39 [PATCH] ipmi: use CONFIG_DMI instead of CONFIG_X86
With Andi Kleen's x86_64 patch to use DMI, and my ia64 to use DMI, there is
now a new CONFIG_DMI option which takes the place of CONFIG_X86 to denote
the availability of the DMI functions.  Make the IPMI driver use CONFIG_DMI
instead.

Tested on ia64 2.6.15 kernel plus the previous patch, on a Dell PowerEdge
7250 Itanium2 server, and it now autodetects the IPMI KCS driver as
expected.

Paolo Galtieri 7767e126ca [PATCH] IPMI oops fix
While doing some testing I discovered that if the BIOS on a board does not
properly setup the DMI information it leads to a panic in the IPMI code.

The panic is due to dereferencing a pointer which is not initialized.  The
pointer is initialized in port_setup() and/or mem_setup() and used in
init_one_smi() and cleanup_one_si(), however if either port_setup() or
mem_setup() return ENODEV the pointer does not get initialized.

Corey Minyard a9a2c44ff0 [PATCH] ipmi: add timer thread
We must poll for responses to commands when interrupts aren't in use.  The
default poll interval is based on using a kernel timer, which varies with HZ.
For character-based interfaces like KCS and SMIC though, that can be way too
slow (>15 minutes to flash a new firmware with KCS, >20 seconds to retrieve
the sensor list).

This creates a low-priority kernel thread to poll more often.  If the state
machine is idle, so is the kernel thread.  But if there's an active command,
it polls quite rapidly.  This decrease a firmware flash time from 15 minutes
to 1.5 minutes, and the sensor list time to 4.5 seconds, on a Dell PowerEdge
x8x system.

The timer-based polling remains, to ensure some amount of responsiveness even
under high user process CPU load.

Checking for a stopped timer at rmmod now uses atomics and del_timer_sync() to
ensure safe stoppage.
