It's always been a hassle that if an external journal's
device number changes, the filesystem won't mount.
And since boot-time enumeration can change, device number
changes aren't unusual.
The current mechanism to update the journal location is by
passing in a mount option w/ a new devnum, but that's a hassle;
it's a manual approach, fixing things after the fact.
Adding a mount option, "-o journal_path=/dev/$DEVICE" would
help, since then we can do i.e.
# mount -o journal_path=/dev/disk/by-label/$JOURNAL_LABEL ...
and it'll mount even if the devnum has changed, as shown here:
# losetup /dev/loop0 journalfile
# mke2fs -L mylabel-journal -O journal_dev /dev/loop0
# mkfs.ext3 -L mylabel -J device=/dev/loop0 /dev/sdb1
Change the journal device number:

Page reclaim keeps track of dirty and under writeback pages and uses it
to determine if wait_iff_congested() should stall or if kswapd should
begin writing back pages. This fails to account for buffer pages that
can be under writeback but not PageWriteback which is the case for
filesystems like ext3 ordered mode. Furthermore, PageDirty buffer pages
can have all the buffers clean and writepage does no IO so it should not
be accounted as congested.
This patch adds an address_space operation that filesystems may
optionally use to check if a page is really dirty or really under
writeback. An implementation is provided for for buffer_heads is added
and used for block operations and ext3 in ordered mode. By default the
page flags are obeyed.
Credit goes to Jan Kara for identifying that the page flags alone are
not sufficient for ext3 and sanity checking a number of ideas on how the
problem could be addressed.

Both ext3 and ext4 htree_dirblock_to_tree() is just filling the
in-core rbtree for use by call_filldir(). All updates of ->f_pos are
done by the latter; bumping it here (on error) is obviously wrong - we
might very well have it nowhere near the block we'd found an error in.

Currently there is no way to truncate partial page where the end
truncate point is not at the end of the page. This is because it was not
needed and the functionality was enough for file system truncate
operation to work properly. However more file systems now support punch
hole feature and it can benefit from mm supporting truncating page just
up to the certain point.
Specifically, with this functionality truncate_inode_pages_range() can
be changed so it supports truncating partial page at the end of the
range (currently it will BUG_ON() if 'end' is not at the end of the
page).
This commit changes the invalidatepage() address space operation
prototype to accept range to be invalidated and update all the instances
for it.
We also change the block_invalidatepage() in the same way and actually
make a use of the new length argument implementing range invalidation.
Actual file system implementations will follow except the file systems
where the changes are really simple and should not change the behaviour
in any way .Implementation for truncate_page_range() which will be able
to accept page unaligned ranges will follow as well.

Walking a bio's page mappings has proved problematic, so create a new
bio flag to indicate that a bio's data needs to be snapshotted in order
to guarantee stable pages during writeback. Next, for the one user
(ext3/jbd) of snapshotting, hook all the places where writes can be
initiated without PG_writeback set, and set BIO_SNAP_STABLE there.
We must also flag journal "metadata" bios for stable writeout, since
file data can be written through the journal. Finally, the
MS_SNAP_STABLE mount flag (only used by ext3) is now superfluous, so get
rid of it.

In data=journal mode, if we unmount the file system before a
transaction has a chance to complete, when the journal inode is being
evicted, we can end up calling into log_wait_commit() for the
last transaction, after the journalling machinery has been shut down.
That triggers the WARN_ONCE in __log_start_commit().
Arguably we should adjust ext3_should_journal_data() to return FALSE
for the journal inode, but the only place it matters is
ext3_evict_inode(), and so it's to save a bit of CPU time, and to make
the patch much more obviously correct by inspection(tm), we'll fix it
by explicitly not trying to waiting for a journal commit when we are
evicting the journal inode, since it's guaranteed to never succeed in
this case.
This can be easily replicated via:
mount -t ext3 -o data=journal /dev/vdb /vdb ; umount /vdb
This is a port of ext4 fix from Ted Ts'o.

ext3_msg() takes the printk prefix as the second parameter and the
format string as the third parameter. Two callers of ext3_msg omit the
prefix and pass the format string as the second parameter and the first
parameter to the format string as the third parameter. In both cases
this string comes from an arbitrary source. Which means the string may
contain format string characters, which will
lead to undefined and potentially harmful behavior.
The issue was introduced in commit 4cf46b67eb("ext3: Unify log messages
in ext3") and is fixed by this patch.

Modify the request_module to prefix the file system type with "fs-"
and add aliases to all of the filesystems that can be built as modules
to match.
A common practice is to build all of the kernel code and leave code
that is not commonly needed as modules, with the result that many
users are exposed to any bug anywhere in the kernel.
Looking for filesystems with a fs- prefix limits the pool of possible
modules that can be loaded by mount to just filesystems trivially
making things safer with no real cost.
Using aliases means user space can control the policy of which
filesystem modules are auto-loaded by editing /etc/modprobe.d/*.conf
with blacklist and alias directives. Allowing simple, safe,
well understood work-arounds to known problematic software.
This also addresses a rare but unfortunate problem where the filesystem
name is not the same as it's module name and module auto-loading
would not work. While writing this patch I saw a handful of such
cases. The most significant being autofs that lives in the module
autofs4.
This is relevant to user namespaces because we can reach the request
module in get_fs_type() without having any special permissions, and
people get uncomfortable when a user specified string (in this case
the filesystem type) goes all of the way to request_module.
After having looked at this issue I don't think there is any
particular reason to perform any filtering or permission checks beyond
making it clear in the module request that we want a filesystem
module. The common pattern in the kernel is to call request_module()
without regards to the users permissions. In general all a filesystem
module does once loaded is call register_filesystem() and go to sleep.
Which means there is not much attack surface exposed by loading a
filesytem module unless the filesystem is mounted. In a user
namespace filesystems are not mounted unless .fs_flags = FS_USERNS_MOUNT,
which most filesystems do not set today.

This provides a band-aid to provide stable page writes on jbd without
needing to backport the fixed locking and page writeback bit handling
schemes of jbd2. The band-aid works by using bounce buffers to snapshot
page contents instead of waiting.
For those wondering about the ext3 bandage -- fixing the jbd locking
(which was done as part of ext4dev years ago) is a lot of surgery, and
setting PG_writeback on data pages when we actually hold the page lock
dropped ext3 performance by nearly an order of magnitude. If we're
going to migrate iscsi and raid to use stable page writes, the
complaints about high latency will likely return. We might as well
centralize their page snapshotting thing to one place.

It will be better to use ENOMEM rather than EIO, because the only

Currently if len argument in ext3_trim_fs() is smaller than one block,
the 'end' variable underflow. Avoid that by returning EINVAL if len is
smaller than file system block.

This is the ext3 version of the same patch applied to Ext4, where such goal is
to audit the usage of ext3_bread() due a possible misinterpretion of its return
value.
Focused on directory blocks, a NULL value returned from ext3_bread() means a
hole, which cannot exist into a directory inode. It can pass undetected after a
fix in an uninitialized error variable.
The (now) initialized variable into ext3_getblk() may lead to a zero'ed return
value of ext3_bread() to its callers, which can make the caller do not detect
the hole in the directory inode.
This patch creates a new wrapper function ext3_dir_bread() which checks for
holes properly, reports error, and returns EIO in that case.

This is a backport of ext4 commit 90b0a9732 which fixes a possible
non-initialized variable on htree_dirblock_to_tree().
Ext3 has the same non initialized variable, but, in any case it will be
initialized by ext3_get_blocks_handle(), which will avoid the bug to be
triggered, but, the non-initialized variable by htree_dirblock_to_tree() is
still a bug.

There's no reason to call rcu_barrier() on every
deactivate_locked_super(). We only need to make sure that all delayed rcu
free inodes are flushed before we destroy related cache.
Removing rcu_barrier() from deactivate_locked_super() affects some fast
paths. E.g. on my machine exit_group() of a last process in IPC
namespace takes 0.07538s. rcu_barrier() takes 0.05188s of that time.

Pull user namespace changes from Eric Biederman:
"This is a mostly modest set of changes to enable basic user namespace
support. This allows the code to code to compile with user namespaces
enabled and removes the assumption there is only the initial user
namespace. Everything is converted except for the most complex of the
filesystems: autofs4, 9p, afs, ceph, cifs, coda, fuse, gfs2, ncpfs,
nfs, ocfs2 and xfs as those patches need a bit more review.
The strategy is to push kuid_t and kgid_t values are far down into
subsystems and filesystems as reasonable. Leaving the make_kuid and
from_kuid operations to happen at the edge of userspace, as the values
come off the disk, and as the values come in from the network.
Letting compile type incompatible compile errors (present when user
namespaces are enabled) guide me to find the issues.
The most tricky areas have been the places where we had an implicit
union of uid and gid values and were storing them in an unsigned int.
Those places were converted into explicit unions. I made certain to
handle those places with simple trivial patches.
Out of that work I discovered we have generic interfaces for storing
quota by projid. I had never heard of the project identifiers before.
Adding full user namespace support for project identifiers accounts
for most of the code size growth in my git tree.
Ultimately there will be work to relax privlige checks from
"capable(FOO)" to "ns_capable(user_ns, FOO)" where it is safe allowing
root in a user names to do those things that today we only forbid to
non-root users because it will confuse suid root applications.
While I was pushing kuid_t and kgid_t changes deep into the audit code
I made a few other cleanups. I capitalized on the fact we process
netlink messages in the context of the message sender. I removed
usage of NETLINK_CRED, and started directly using current->tty.
Some of these patches have also made it into maintainer trees, with no
problems from identical code from different trees showing up in
linux-next.
After reading through all of this code I feel like I might be able to
win a game of kernel trivial pursuit."

Change struct dquot dq_id to a struct kqid and remove the now
unecessary dq_type.
Make minimal changes to dquot, quota_tree, quota_v1, quota_v2, ext3,
ext4, and ocfs2 to deal with the change in quota structures and
signatures. The ocfs2 changes are larger than most because of the
extensive tracing throughout the ocfs2 quota code that prints out
dq_id.
quota_tree.c:get_index is modified to take a struct kqid instead of a
qid_t because all of it's callers pass in dquot->dq_id and it allows
me to introduce only a single conversion.
The rest of the changes are either just replacing dq_type with dq_id.type,
adding conversions to deal with the change in type and occassionally
adding qid_eq to allow quota id comparisons in a user namespace safe way.

- Pass the user namespace the uid and gid values in the xattr are stored
in into posix_acl_from_xattr.
- Pass the user namespace kuid and kgid values should be converted into
when storing uid and gid values in an xattr in posix_acl_to_xattr.
- Modify all callers of posix_acl_from_xattr and posix_acl_to_xattr to
pass in &init_user_ns.
In the short term this change is not strictly needed but it makes the
code clearer. In the longer term this change is necessary to be able to
mount filesystems outside of the initial user namespace that natively
store posix acls in the linux xattr format.

When we have a filesystem with an orphan inode list *and* in error
state, things behave differently if:
1) e2fsck -p is done prior to mount: e2fsck fixes things and exits
happily (barring other significant problems)
vs.
2) mount is done first, then e2fsck -p: due to the orphan inode
list removal, more errors are found and e2fsck exits with
UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY.
The 2nd case above, on the root filesystem, has the tendency to halt
the boot process, which is unfortunate.
The situation can be improved by not clearing the orphan
inode list when the fs is mounted readonly.

Code tracking when transaction needs to be committed on fdatasync(2) forgets
to handle a situation when only inode's i_size is changed. Thus in such
situations fdatasync(2) doesn't force transaction with new i_size to disk
and that can result in wrong i_size after a crash.
Fix the issue by updating inode's i_datasync_tid whenever its size is
updated.

Convert ext3_count_free() to use memweight() instead of table lookup
based counting clear bits implementation. This change only affects the
code segments enabled by EXT3FS_DEBUG.
Note that this memweight() call can't be replaced with a single
bitmap_weight() call, although the pointer to the memory area is aligned
to long-word boundary. Because the size of the memory area may not be a
multiple of BITS_PER_LONG, then it returns wrong value on big-endian
architecture.
This also includes the following changes.
- Remove unnecessary map == NULL check in ext3_count_free() which
always takes non-null pointer as the memory area.
- Fix printk format warning that only reveals with EXT3FS_DEBUG.

For ext3/4 htree directories, using the vfs llseek function with
SEEK_END goes to i_size like for any other file, but in reality
we want the maximum possible hash value. Recent changes
in ext4 have cut & pasted generic_file_llseek() back into fs/ext4/dir.c,
but replicating this core code seems like a bad idea, especially
since the copy has already diverged from the vfs.
This patch updates generic_file_llseek_size to accept
both a custom maximum offset, and a custom EOF position. With this
in place, ext4_dir_llseek can pass in the appropriate maximum hash
position for both maxsize and eof, and get what it wants.
As far as I know, this does not fix any bugs - nfs in the kernel
doesn't use SEEK_END, and I don't know of any user who does. But
some ext4 folks seem keen on doing the right thing here, and I can't
really argue.

Since the moment writes to quota files are using block device page cache and
space for quota structures is reserved at the moment they are first accessed we
have no reason to sync quota before inode writeback. In fact this order is now
only harmful since quota information can easily change during inode writeback
(either because conversion of delayed-allocated extents or simply because of
allocation of new blocks for simple filesystems not using page_mkwrite).
So move syncing of quota information after writeback of inodes into ->sync_fs
method. This way we do not have to use ->quota_sync callback which is primarily
intended for use by quotactl syscall anyway and we get rid of calling
->sync_fs() twice unnecessarily. We skip quota syncing for OCFS2 since it does
proper quota journalling in all cases (unlike ext3, ext4, and reiserfs which
also support legacy non-journalled quotas) and thus there are no dirty quota
structures.

Pull user namespace enhancements from Eric Biederman:
"This is a course correction for the user namespace, so that we can
reach an inexpensive, maintainable, and reasonably complete
implementation.
Highlights:
- Config guards make it impossible to enable the user namespace and
code that has not been converted to be user namespace safe.
- Use of the new kuid_t type ensures the if you somehow get past the
config guards the kernel will encounter type errors if you enable
user namespaces and attempt to compile in code whose permission
checks have not been updated to be user namespace safe.
- All uids from child user namespaces are mapped into the initial
user namespace before they are processed. Removing the need to add
an additional check to see if the user namespace of the compared
uids remains the same.
- With the user namespaces compiled out the performance is as good or
better than it is today.
- For most operations absolutely nothing changes performance or
operationally with the user namespace enabled.
- The worst case performance I could come up with was timing 1
billion cache cold stat operations with the user namespace code
enabled. This went from 156s to 164s on my laptop (or 156ns to
164ns per stat operation).
- (uid_t)-1 and (gid_t)-1 are reserved as an internal error value.
Most uid/gid setting system calls treat these value specially
anyway so attempting to use -1 as a uid would likely cause
entertaining failures in userspace.
- If setuid is called with a uid that can not be mapped setuid fails.
I have looked at sendmail, login, ssh and every other program I
could think of that would call setuid and they all check for and
handle the case where setuid fails.
- If stat or a similar system call is called from a context in which
we can not map a uid we lie and return overflowuid. The LFS
experience suggests not lying and returning an error code might be
better, but the historical precedent with uids is different and I
can not think of anything that would break by lying about a uid we
can't map.
- Capabilities are localized to the current user namespace making it
safe to give the initial user in a user namespace all capabilities.
My git tree covers all of the modifications needed to convert the core
kernel and enough changes to make a system bootable to runlevel 1."

ext4: return 32/64-bit dir name hash according to usage type

Traditionally ext2/3/4 has returned a 32-bit hash value from llseek()
to appease NFSv2, which can only handle a 32-bit cookie for seekdir()
and telldir(). However, this causes problems if there are 32-bit hash
collisions, since the NFSv2 server can get stuck resending the same
entries from the directory repeatedly.
Allow ext3 to return a full 64-bit hash (both major and minor) for
telldir to decrease the chance of hash collisions.
This patch does implement a new ext3_dir_llseek op, because with 64-bit
hashes, nfs will attempt to seek to a hash "offset" which is much
larger than ext3's s_maxbytes. So for dx dirs, we call
generic_file_llseek_size() with the appropriate max hash value as the
maximum seekable size. Otherwise we just pass through to
generic_file_llseek().

We don't need i_mutex in ext3_quota_write() because writes to quota file
are serialized by dqio_mutex anyway. Changes to quota files outside of quota
code are forbidded and enforced by NOATIME and IMMUTABLE bits.

This allows comparing hash and len in one operation on 64-bit
architectures. Right now only __d_lookup_rcu() takes advantage of this,
since that is the case we care most about.
The use of anonymous struct/unions hides the alternate 64-bit approach
from most users, the exception being a few cases where we initialize a
'struct qstr' with a static initializer. This makes the problematic
cases use a new QSTR_INIT() helper function for that (but initializing
just the name pointer with a "{ .name = xyzzy }" initializer remains
valid, as does just copying another qstr structure).

After we moved inode_sync_wait() from end_writeback() it doesn't make sense
to call the function end_writeback() anymore. Rename it to clear_inode()
which well says what the function really does - set I_CLEAR flag.

The overflow might happen when passing blocknr into
ext3_get_group_no_and_offset(), because it expects type ext3_fsblk_t
which might be smaller than uint64_t. This will most likely happen when
calling FITRIM with the default argument len = ULLONG_MAX.
Fix this by using "end" variable instead of "start+len" as it is easier
to get right and specifically check that the end is not beyond the end
of the file system, so we are sure that the result of
get_group_no_and_offset() will not overflow. Otherwise truncate it to
the size of the file system.

Currently ext3 updates ctime in ext3_splice_branch() which is called whenever
we allocate one block. But it is wasteful because ext3 doesn't support
nanosecond timestamp. This leads to a performance loss.

dquot_free_block() is called in the end of ext3_new_blocks() and updates
information of the inode structure. However, this update is not necessary
if the number of blocks we requested is equal to the number of
allocated blocks.

Delete any instances of include module.h that were not strictly
required. In the case of ext2, the declaration of MODULE_LICENSE
etc. were in inode.c but the module_init/exit were in super.c, so
relocate the MODULE_LICENCE/AUTHOR block to super.c which makes it
consistent with ext3 and ext4 at the same time.

The EXT{3,4}_IOC_SETVERSION ioctl() updates i_ctime and i_generation
without i_mutex. This can lead to a race with the other operations that
update i_ctime. This is not a big issue but let's make the ioctl consistent
with how we handle e.g. other timestamp updates and use i_mutex to protect
inode changes.

WARN_ON_ONCE(IS_RDONLY(inode)) tends to trip when filesystem hits error and is
remounted read-only. This unnecessarily scares users (well, they should be
scared because of filesystem error, but the stack trace distracts them from the
right source of their fear ;-). We could as well just remove the WARN_ON but
it's not hard to fix it to not trip on filesystem with errors and not use more
cycles in the common case so that's what we do.

When insert_inode_locked() fails in ext3_new_inode() it most likely
means inode bitmap got corrupted and we allocated again inode which
is already in use. Also doing unlock_new_inode() during error recovery
is wrong since inode does not have I_NEW set. Fix the problem by jumping
to fail: (instead of fail_drop:) which declares filesystem error and
does not call unlock_new_inode().

Both ext3 and ext4 put the half-created symlink inode into the orphan list
for a while (see the comment in ext[34]_symlink() for gory details). Then,
if everything went fine, they pull it out of the orphan list and bump the
link count back to 1. The thing is, inc_nlink() is going to complain about
seeing somebody changing i_nlink from 0 to 1. With a good reason, since
normally something like that is a bug. Explicit set_nlink(inode, 1) does
the same thing as inc_nlink() here, but it does *not* complain - exactly
because it should be usable in strange situations like this one.

Seeing that just about every destructor got that INIT_LIST_HEAD() copied into
it, there is no point whatsoever keeping this INIT_LIST_HEAD in inode_init_once();
the cost of taking it into inode_init_always() will be negligible for pipes
and sockets and negative for everything else. Not to mention the removal of
boilerplate code from ->destroy_inode() instances...
