Manuel Lauss b2b13cdfd0 SERIAL 8250: Fixes for Alchemy UARTs.
Limit the amount of address space claimed for Alchemy serial ports to
0x1000. On the Au1300, ports are only 0x1000 apart, and the registers
only extend to 0x110 at most on all supported alchemy models.

On the Au1300 the autodetect logic no longer works and this makes it
necessary to specify the port type through platform data. Because of
this the MSR quirk needs to be moved outside the autoconfig() function
which will no longer be called when UPF_FIXED_TYPE is specified.

Dick Hollenbeck bca476139d serial: 8250: add serial transmitter fully empty test
When controlling an industrial radio modem it can be necessary to
manipulate the handshake lines in order to control the radio modem's
transmitter, from userspace.

The transmitter should not be turned off before all characters have been
transmitted. serial8250_tx_empty() was reporting that all characters were
transmitted before they actually were.

===

Discovered in parallel with more testing and analysis by Kees Schoenmakers
as follows:

I ran into an NetMos 9835 serial pci board which behaves a little
different than the standard. This type of expansion board is very common.

"Standard" 8250 compatible devices clear the 'UART_LST_TEMT" bit together
with the "UART_LSR_THRE" bit when writing data to the device.

The NetMos device does it slightly different

I believe that the TEMT bit is coupled to the shift register. The problem
is that after writing data to the device and very quickly after that one
does call serial8250_tx_empty, it returns the wrong information.

My patch makes the test more robust (and solves the problem) and it does
not affect the already correct devices.

Alan:

We may yet need to quirk this but now we know which chips we have a
way to do that should we find this breaks some other 8250 clone with
  dodgy THRE.

Andy Green 94d32f99c6 imx-serial-excessive-status-clearing-on-break.patch
cc: Sasha Hauer <kernel@pengutronix.de>

We noticed that we were only able to communicate once with a GSM module
per session, if we powered down the module then the serial driver was
broken until reset, no traffic or /proc/interrupts activity could be
seen any more.

Volker noticed it was provoked by a long "break" seen on the wire when
the RX was not driven during powerdown, we discovered we could kill the
serial driver just by forcing RX low extenally for a little while.

I saw that the processing for BREAK in the driver gets too excited and
clears down all set bits in USR2, including that a character is pending.
This stops all further characters getting processed.

The attached one-liner makes the serial driver immortal against BREAK.

Stanislav Brabec 4547be7809 serial-core: resume serial hardware with no_console_suspend
Perform a tricky suspend/resume even with no_console_suspend.

With no_console_suspend, kernel skips serial port suspend/resume and the
serial hardware may remain in undefined state after resume. It actually
happens on devices that don't have BIOS that handle serial
initialization. It makes impossible to use serial console after resume.

Devices affected by this problem include:
Sharp Zaurus devices
Several PXA based ARM embedded boards

The patch does:
- Save the hardware state
- Perform buffer flush in time of its suspend call
- Tell the driver that port is suspended
- But still accept new data
- And keep console hardware in state that allows to send them

It allows to capture late console messages without breaking console
after resume.

This is just a resend of a patch discussed in these threads, as the
patch was not yet applied.

Benjamin Herrenschmidt 02ab851324 serial/pmac_zilog: Workaround problem due to interrupt on closed port
It seems that in qemu, we can see an interrupt in R3 despite the
fact that it's masked in W1. The chip doesn't actually issue an
interrupt, but we can "see" it when taking an interrupt for the
other channel. This may be a qemu bug ... or not, so let's be
safe and avoid calling into the UART layer when that happens which
woulc cause a crash.

Uwe Kleine-König c934878cc0 Serial: pxa: work around Errata #75
Intel(R) PXA27x Processor Family Specification Update (Nov 2005)
says:

E75. UART: Baud rate may not be programmed correctly on
       back-to-back writes.

  Problem:
When programming the Divisor Latch registers, Low and High (DLL and
DLH), with back-to-back writes, the second register write may not
take effect. The result is an incorrect baud rate.

  Workaround:
After programming the first Divisor Latch register, read and verify
it before programming the second Divisor Latch register.

This was hit when changing the baud rate from 115200 to 9600 while
receiving characters at 9600 Bd.

Unfortunately, one cannot hold on to the struct firmware
that request_firmware_nowait() hands off, which is needed
in some cases. Allow this by requiring the callback to
free it (via release_firmware).

Additionally, give it a gfp_t parameter -- all the current
users call it from a GFP_KERNEL context so the GFP_ATOMIC
isn't necessary. This also marks an API break which is
useful in a sense, although that is obviously not the
primary purpose of this change.

Guennadi Liakhovetski b1516803d5 serial: sh-sci: Fix too early port disabling.
Currently serial ports on SH CPUs get disabled too early, because the
sci_tx_empty() routine claims to not be able to detect whether the
transmission has been completed and just always returns TIOCSER_TEMT. This
results in corrupt output of last characters if the port is not open for
reading at the same time. It is however possible to detect whether
transmission has been completed. Use the TEND bit of the status register

Michal Simek 16173c7c2d tty/of_serial: add missing ns16550a id
Many boards have a bug-free ns16550 compatible serial port, which we should
register as PORT_16550A. This introduces a new value "ns16550a" for the
compatible property of of_serial to let a firmware choose that model instead
of using the crippled PORT_16550 mode.

Dominik Brodowski 5fa9167a1b pcmcia: rework the irq_req_t typedef
Most of the irq_req_t typedef'd struct can be re-worked quite
easily:

(1) IRQInfo2 was unused in any case, so drop it.

(2) IRQInfo1 was used write-only, so drop it.

(3) Instance (private data to be passed to the IRQ handler):
Most PCMCIA drivers using pcmcia_request_irq() to actually
register an IRQ handler set the "dev_id" to the same pointer
as the "priv" pointer in struct pcmcia_device. Modify the two
exceptions (ipwireless, ibmtr_cs) to also work this waym and
set the IRQ handler's "dev_id" to p_dev->priv unconditionally.

(4) Handler is to be of type irq_handler_t.

(5) Handler != NULL already tells whether an IRQ handler is present.
Therefore, we do not need the IRQ_HANDLER_PRESENT flag in
	irq_req_t.Attributes.

Paul Mundt edad1f208e serial: sh-sci: Depend on HAVE_CLK unconditionally.
The sh-sci code conditionalized the clock framework support in order to
give the other platforms a chance to catch up. sh64 supported this some
time ago and the forthcoming ARM changes handle this as well, this leaves

support upstream, and has yet to do so. At this point I will no longer be
holding back the driver to support an unreponsive architecture, 7 years
is quite enough of a grace period. Support is easily implemented on the
architecture if and when it ever decides to merge its changes upstream.

David S. Miller 457931de3b serial: suncore: Fix RSC/LOM handling in sunserial_console_termios().
RSC and LOM devices have fixed speed settings.

We already had some code to match and handle "rsc" named devices on
E250 systems, but we also have to handle 'rsc-console', 'rsc-control',
and 'lom-console'.

Also, in order to get this right regardless of what 'output-device'
happens to be, explicitly pass the UART device node pointer to this
routine.

This tells the logic to ignore the line match when deciding whether the
device is the OpenFirmware specified console device or not.

This is going to be used in the SU driver for rsc-console detection.

There is probably a better way to handle this, but this is the least
intrusive solution for now which we can validate won't break any other
cases.

Dominik Brodowski 6ae3b84d97 serial_cs: use pcmcia_loop_config() and pre-determined values
As the PCMCIA core already determines the multifunction count, the
ConfigBase address and the Present value, we can use them directly
instead of parsing the CIS again. By making use of pcmcia_loop_config(),
we can further remove the remaining call to pcmcia_get_first_tuple()
and friends.

Chuck Ebbert d41a4b515e serial: add parameter to force skipping the test for the TXEN bug
Allow users to force skipping the TXEN test at init time. Applies
to all serial ports. Intended for debugging only.

There is a blacklist for devices where we need to skip the test but the
list is not complete. This lets users force skipping the test so we can
determine if they need to be added to the list.

Some HP machines with weird serial consoles have this problem and there

Deepak Saxena ba15ab0e8d Set proper console speed on resume if console suspend is disabled
Commit b5b82df6, from May 2007, breaks no_console_suspend on the OLPC
XO laptop. Basically what happens is that upon returning from resume,
serial8250_resume_port() will reconfigure the port for high speed
mode and all console output will be garbled, making debug of the
resume path painful. This patch modifies uart_resume_port() to
reset the port to the state it was in before we suspended.

Original patch by Marcelo Tosatti

Second patch by Deepak then reworked by Alan to fit with the tty changes
before it got submitted. Also fixed the console path to set c_i/ospeed as
some drivers require the termios fields are valid

Anton Vorontsov 24d481ecae 8250: Now honours baud rate lower bounds
A platform clock drives 8250 ports in most SOC systems, the clock
might run at high frequencies, and so it's not always possible to
downscale uart clock to a desired value.

Currently the 8250 uart driver accepts not supported baud rates, and
what is worse, it is doing this silently, and then passes not accepted
values to a new termios, so userspace has no chance to catch this kind
of errors (userspace verifies that settings were accepted by reading
back and comparing the settings).

This patch fixes the issue by passing minimum baud rate to the
uart_get_baud_rate() call, the call should take care of all bounds,
so userspace should now report:

  # stty -F /dev/ttyS0 speed 300
  115200
stty: /dev/ttyS0: unable to perform all requested operations

p.s. uart_get_baud_rate() falls back to 9600, which still might be too
low for some 10 GHz platforms, but that's a separate issue, and
we can wait with fixing this till we find such a platform.

This cleans up the irqflags tracing code quite a bit and ties it
in to various missing callsites that caused an imbalance when

Magnus Damm 44e18e9eda sh-sci: update receive error handling for muxed irqs
This patch updates the receive error code for muxed
interrupts in the sh-sci driver.

Receive error interrupts may be generated by the hardware
if RE or REIE bits in SCSCR are set. Update the muxed
interrupt handling code to acknowledge error interrupts
if RE or REIE is set, instead of only acknowledging if
REIE is set.

Without this patch error interrupts may be generated but
never acked resulting in a "nobody cared" crash.

to stick sanity checks.

Roel Kluin 52e3632ea6 serial: fix off by one errors
In zs_console_putchar() occurs:

	if (zs_transmit_drain(zport, irq))
		write_zsdata(zport, ch);

However if in zs_transmit_drain() no empty Tx Buffer occurs, limit reaches
-1 => true, and the write still occurs.

This patch changes postfix to prefix decrements in this and similar
functions to prevent similar mistakes in the future. This decreases the
iterations with one but the chosen loop count was arbitrary anyway.

In sunhv limit reaches -1, not 0, so the test is off by one.

Haavard Skinnemoen 0ccad87012 atmel_serial: fix hang in set_termios when crtscts is enabled
After enabling hardware flow control, any subsequent termios call may hang
waiting for the transmitter to drain. This appears to be caused by a
busy-loop in set_termios() waiting for the transmitter to become empty,
which may take a very long time (or hang indefinitely) if the device at
the other end is blocking us.

A quick look through the tty and serial_core code indicates that any
necessary flushing (which is optional) has already been done at this
point, so there's no need for the driver to flush the transmitter on its
own.

Fix it by removing the busy-loop altogether.

all older kernel versions.

Sonic Zhang 35ff693579 Blackfin Serial Driver: handle irregular DMA register status in auto start mode
This bug is caused by irregular behavior of DMA register CURR_X_COUNT
and CURR_Y_COUNT when an auto restart uart rx DMA run to last byte in
DMA buffer, trigger the interrupt and stay at this possiton. The status
of current x and y is 0:7 instead of 512:8 or 0:8. The driver doesn't
take care of this case when calculating the position.

Michael Hennerich a19e8b2059 Blackfin SPORT UART: fix data misses while using transmit frame sync
SPORT transmit frame sync (TFS) isn't used as an electrical signal during

Linus Walleij dc890c2dcd [ARM] 5544/1: Trust PrimeCell resource sizes
I found the PrimeCell/AMBA Bus drivers distrusting the resource
passed in as part of the struct amba_device abstraction. This
patch removes all hard coded resource sizes found in the PrimeCell
drivers and move the responsibility of this definition back to
the platform/board device definition, which already exist and
appear to be correct for all in-tree users of these drivers.
We do this using the resource_size() inline function which was
also replicated in the only driver using the resource size, so
that has been changed too. The KMI_SIZE was left in kmi.h in case
someone likes it. Test-compiled against Versatile and Integrator
defconfigs, seems to work but I don't posess these boards and
cannot test them.

If you setserial a port which has never been initialised we change the type
but don't update the I/O method pointers. The same problem is true if you
change the io type of a port - but nobody ever does that so nobody noticed!

Remember the old type and when attaching if the type has changed reload the
port accessor pointers. We can't do it blindly as some 8250 drivers load custom
accessors and we must not stomp those.

Paul Mundt 0fb849b9d7 sh: Integrate the SH-5 onchip_remap() more coherently.
Presently this is special-cased for early initialization. While there are
situations where these static early initializations are still necessary,
with minor changes it is possible to use this for the regular ioremap
implementation as well. This allows us to kill off the special-casing for
the remap completely and to start tidying up all of the SH-5
special-casing in drivers.

Mark Brown 41609ff430 [ARM] 5449/1: S3C: Use disable_irq_nosync() to fix boot lockups
With 2.6.30-rc1 on SMDK6410 I experience a soft lockup on bootup when
the Samsung serial driver attempts to disable the transmit interrupt
from within the transmit interrupt handler: it calls disable_irq()
which locks up due to attempting to synchronise with the running handler.
Fix this by using disable_irq_nosync().

Benjamin Herrenschmidt f08b7e9f55 powerpc/pmac: Fix internal modem IRQ on Wallstreet PowerBook
The (relatively) new pmac_zilog driver doesn't use the pre-munged
IRQ numbers from the macio_dev unlike other macio things, it
directly maps it off the OF device-tree.

It does that because it can be initialized much earlier than the
registration of the macio devices, in order to get a serial
console early.

Unfortunately, that means that it "misses" some fixups done
by the macio layer to work around missing interrupt descriptions
in the device-tree of the Wallstreet machines.

This patch brings the necessary workaround into the pmac_zilog
driver itself to bring it back to working condition.

This patch fixes this issue.

Mauro Carvalho Chehab b6adea334c 8250: fix boot hang with serial console when using with Serial Over Lan port
Intel 8257x Ethernet boards have a feature called Serial Over Lan.

This feature works by emulating a serial port, and it is detected by
kernel as a normal 8250 port. However, this emulation is not perfect, as
also noticed on changeset 7500b1f602.

Before this patch, the kernel were trying to check if the serial TX is
capable of work using IRQ's.

This were done with a code similar this:

        serial_outp(up, UART_IER, UART_IER_THRI);
        lsr = serial_in(up, UART_LSR);
        iir = serial_in(up, UART_IIR);
        serial_outp(up, UART_IER, 0);

        if (lsr & UART_LSR_TEMT && iir & UART_IIR_NO_INT)
		up->bugs |= UART_BUG_TXEN;

This works fine for other 8250 ports, but, on 8250-emulated SoL port, the
chip is a little lazy to down UART_IIR_NO_INT at UART_IIR register.

Due to that, UART_BUG_TXEN is sometimes enabled. However, as TX IRQ keeps
working, and the TX polling is now enabled, the driver miss-interprets the
IRQ received later, hanging up the machine until a key is pressed at the
serial console.

This is the 6 version of this patch. Previous versions were trying to
introduce a large enough delay between serial_outp and serial_in(up,
UART_IIR), but not taking forever. However, the needed delay couldn't be
safely determined.

At the experimental tests, a delay of 1us solves most of the cases, but
still hangs sometimes. Increasing the delay to 5us was better, but still
doesn't solve. A very high delay of 50 ms seemed to work every time.

However, poking around with delays and pray for it to be enough doesn't
seem to be a good approach, even for a quirk.

So, instead of playing with random large arbitrary delays, let's just
disable UART_BUG_TXEN for all SoL ports.

Atsushi Nemoto 27c0c8e511 atmel_serial might lose modem status change
I found a problem of handling of modem status of atmel_serial driver.

With the commit 1ecc26 ("atmel_serial: split the interrupt handler"),
handling of modem status signal was splitted into two parts. The
atmel_tasklet_func() compares new status with irq_status_prev, but
irq_status_prev is not correct if signal status was changed while the port
is closed.

Here is a sequence to cause problem:

1. Remote side sets CTS (and DSR).
2. Local side close the port.
3. Local side clears RTS and DTR.
4. Remote side clears CTS and DSR.
5. Local side reopen the port. hw_stopped becomes 1.
6. Local side sets RTS and DTR.
7. Remote side sets CTS and DSR.

Then CTS change interrupt can be received, but since CTS bit in
irq_status_prev and new status is same, uart_handle_cts_change() will not
be called (so hw_stopped will not be cleared, i.e. cannot send any data).

I suppose irq_status_prev should be initialized at somewhere in open
sequence.

Itai Levi pointed out that we need to initialize atmel_port->irq_status
as well here. His analysis is as follows:

> Regarding the second part of the patch (which resets irq_status_prev),
> it turns out that both versions of the patch (mine and Atsushi's)
> still leave enough room for faulty behavior when opening the port.
>
> This is because we are not resetting both irq_status_prev and
> irq_status in atmel_startup() to CSR, which leads faulty behavior in
> the following sequences:
>
> First case:

>
> Second case:
> 1. closing the port while CTS line = 0 (TX allowed)

>

Grant Likely 3b5ebf8e1a powerpc/5200: Stop using device_type and port-number properties
There is no reason for the PSC UART driver or the Ethernet driver
to require a device_type property. The compatible value is sufficient
to uniquely identify the device. Remove it from the driver.

The whole 'port-number' scheme for assigning numbers to PSC uarts was
always rather half baked and just adds complexity. Remove it from the
driver. After this patch is applied, PSC UART numbers are simply
assigned from the order they are found in the device tree (just like
all the other devices). Userspace can query sysfs to determine what
ttyPSC number is assigned to each PSC instance.
